Eagle’s Nest Foundation

ANNUAL REPORT

Experiential education for young people, promoting the natural world and the betterment of human character.

2023

Dear Eagle’s Nest Families and Friends,

Looking back over the nearly 25 years I have been serving in the Executive Director role at Eagle’s Nest, I am filled with gratitude for the incredible support you, our families and friends, have garnered towards fully realizing our mission. Experiential education for young people, promoting the natural world, and the betterment of human character – what a lofty and increasingly critical mission we have set out for our organization.

When I became Executive Director in 2000, we were just beginning our first capital campaign, The Roots and Wings campaign, and we barely had an Annual Fund. From that successful effort we built the Traditional Arts Center (Wayah and Cheoah) and were able to come up with the down payment to purchase the adjacent 125 acres that are now the conserved lands that constitute a majority of the watershed feeding Eagle’s Nest and also serve as our outdoor classrooms for our participants. Today, our Annual Fund is generating over $320,000 annually for expendable scholarships and program support, and our total endowed scholarship funds have reached $635,000 and are spinning off $15, 630 in scholarships for 2024 students and campers. Additionally, the Brugh Seed Fund, a general endowment with a corpus of $53,000, generated $2,090 for program enhancements in 2024. Eagle’s Nest has also recently been the recipient of a very generous legacy endowed scholarship gift that is currently at $178,000 and expected to grow considerably over the course of this year. The forethought and generosity of this donor will soon be making a significant impact in our financial aid reach.

As I think about the 96 campers and 22 students who were able to be a member of a semester at OA or a session at camp in 2023 through the assistance of $546,566 in financial aid ($159,170 funded via the Annual Fund), I also think of each of you, our donors who made this possible. I hope you know the importance of your gift that opens the door for a young person, yearning to learn to be a part of a community, to be able to feel that joy firsthand, for them to be able to explore the streams and mountains of the Southern Appalachians, or to immerse themselves in school where their passion to learn is sparked to new levels. To see those same students spread out across the newly built “Ted’s Deck” at the Sun Lodge continuing the morning’s class discussion with their teachers over lunch, or a camper singing their heart out at lunch time singing (again thanks to you) makes one really believe in the power of the work at hand. You are integral in this process, and I can say without a doubt, every single gift truly does make a difference.

The impact of Eagle’s Nest’s programs is at the heart of this generosity. Generations of participants dating back to 1927 have come to this Little River Valley to learn and grow into their best selves, thrive in community, and immerse themselves in the natural world. As I step into retirement in September of 2024, I will continue to support this incredible mission and community in any way I can. I hope you will be there by my side – our young people and the gifted educators who are at the core of this work deserve our helping hands and our world needs these young people who will grow into strong, compassionate, and creative leaders.

With deep gratitude for each of you,

Letter from the Camp Director

Like many, many others, I have a strong love of and attachment to the Eagle’s Nest Foundation mission statement. I feel confident that if you were to ask a staff member, trustee, alum or maybe a few campers what it is, they would quickly recite: Experiential Education for young people, promoting the natural world and the betterment of human character. I bet you can recite it as well! Our mission is bold, inspiring, and courageous. It’s heartwarming to see the positive impact of the work that we do to meet our mission for the children we serve. Everything that we do at Eagle’s Nest is carefully thought out with the intention of achieving these lofty goals, knowing that our impact on the Eagle’s Nest community will make the world a little better.

Over the years we have asked ourselves “what is the betterment of human character? How do we define that? What character strengths do we value and how can we help ‘better’ them in children?” These aren’t easy questions to answer, but we’ve put time and effort into defining the character strengths that we want to imbue in

our campers and Hante participants: Confidence, Curiosity, Integrity, Self Reliance, Kindness, Resilience and Hope, and we’ve worked to create curriculum around teaching, supporting and ‘naming’ these strength for children so they can see their value. There seem to be countless studies that extoll the value of these character strengths in the lives of children as they grow to be happy, successful, content adults. I have written about a few of them in recent camp blogs and Eagle articles.

Kindness is the character strength that I feel most connected to. Creating a kind community of belonging for all children is a goal I strive to achieve. Everyday I try to “think kind thoughts and speak kind words.” We all know that isn’t always easy, but we can practice kindness at camp - by greeting each other with smiles in the morning, asking someone how they are doing and actively listening to their response, offering to cover dish washing duty for a cabin mate who has had an exhausting day, cheering loudly for a timid performer when they take the stage at Coffee House, and genuinely being interested in someone who is different from us. Practicing kindness at camp helps us create a community of belonging for everyone at the Nest.

Community Confidence

At Eagle’s Nest we are strongly committed to providing financial aid to camp families so that more children can experience kindness and grow in other character strengths. Each year, we budget 10% or more of our revenue to financial aid for Camp and Hante participants. We also partner with agencies in Charlotte and Brevard to bring approximately 18 campers to Eagle’s Nest with 100% financial aid. Since our budgeted aid alone does not cover the requested need we rely on Annual Fund contributions and on endowed scholarships to help support our participants’ financial needs.

In addition to providing financial aid, we are also able to help outfit our participants for their camp experience. Through our Gear Lending Library, we are able to lend sleeping bags, backpacks, raincoats, hiking boots, and other outdoor gear during their time with us. We would not be able to provide this additional support without your monetary and in kind donations.

Thank you for your support in helping children become confident, curious, kind, resilient, self reliant, hopeful people of integrity. Your support helps create a better future.

Among The Outdoor Academy’s unique traditions, Giving Day is my favorite (as is Morning Watch, and Work Crew, and Solos, and . . . okay, I love it all!). But Giving Day is special. It’s a months-long commitment to knowing a person deeply, exploring and refining your skills and resources, and publicly demonstrating your understanding and support of another. It’s intention and Craft and love manifested in an enduring gift from the heart.

Near the beginning of each semester, we gather students and faculty at Community Meeting, introduce Giving Day and its importance to the OA experience, and then we each draw the name of our Giving Day recipient. The identity of your Giving Day person is a deeply held secret, and it’s widely accepted that a certain “Giving Day Magic” actually

Giving Magic LETTER FROM THE Intellect OA DIRECTOR

guides the connections forged through this process. Maybe your Giving Day person is a fellow student you connected with almost immediately on Orientation Trek. Or maybe your person is someone you wouldn’t otherwise expect to get to know as closely, but now you’re bound together through Giving Day. Maybe by selecting that person’s name, you’re compelled to spend more time with them, think of them differently, or show them a special bit of grace when things get tough during the semester. Or maybe you drew their name because you were destined to know them better all along. Giving Day Magic.

Our last full day of the semester is Giving Day. Students wake up at their Solo spot and rejoin the community circle. After a day of cleanup, ceremony, and final preparations, Giving Day culminates in a beautiful evening presentation. We gather in the Sun Lodge and one by one offer our Giving Day gifts to our person along with a thoughtful presentation that celebrates each individual. The gifts are magnificent: the hand-stitched, leather-bound journal for the new nature poet; the ceramic tea set, each cup representing you and a sibling back home; a carefully crafted song celebrating your

E nvironment

backcountry adventures together. They are beautiful and meaningful and useful and so, so personal. The thoughtful words that accompany these gifts – also given to your person in hard copy – reveal an authentic connection that is often rare for modern teens.

The real magic of Giving Day is that in committing yourself to deeply knowing someone and recognizing them with a meaningful gift, you come to appreciate being deeply known yourself. You feel immense gratitude for that authentic connection afforded to you by the OA experience. And your Giving Day gift is a legacy of that connection – a physical reminder for years to come of your time spent together at 43 Hart Road.

OA’s semester Giving Day is so well complemented by ENF’s summer Giving Day, when campers similarly make beautiful gifts for each other, and the broader Eagle’s Nest community supports our work and mission with meaningful financial support. As I read through past Annual Reports of the Foundation, and survey the names of ENF supporters in print and on plaques around campus, I’m so grateful to be deeply known for our work. Each name is a person uniquely connected to this place and the education we offer young people. Each gift is an enduring legacy to continue that work into the future.

Thank you for your support.

Thank you for Giving Magic.

Sun Lodge: A Place for Communitty

In October, 2023 we gathered on the newly constructed Sun Lodge deck to honor our dear Ted Wesemann and his outstanding contributions to The Outdoor Academy over his 27+ year tenure as environmental science teacher, trail builder, blacksmith, first OA Director, and so much more. It was a day filled with smiles, new and old friends, and the memories that this place recalls for us all.

We deeply know that no matter where we go, what makes the OA community exceptional isn’t actually the Sun Lodge, but that tiny flame of community we each carry, ready to circle around a campfire.” -Semester 1, 1995

Over the years (45 to be exact), the Sun Lodge has housed young people embarking on Hante Adventures, OA students, staff and interns, and, so they say, a mouse, raccoon, and a few attic squirrels. This lodge up the hill got quite the facelift last year, with many thanks to our donors for funding a portion of the renovation.

Total donated towards Sun Lodge renovations: $59,499
