ANNUAL REPORT Experiential education for young people, promoting the natural world and the betterment of human character.

LETTER FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Dear Eagle’s Nest families, As we embark upon setting new goals and initiatives for the year ahead, it is also an important time to pause and reflect on the year just passed: our 90th celebration of connecting young people to the natural world and the betterment of human character. So much of what we were able to accomplish was made possible by your contributions of time, dollars, and deep commitment to our mission. 2017 brought 534 young people to Eagle’s Nest Camp and Hante Adventures, and 56 students to The Outdoor Academy. 128 of these bright children and teens joined our programs thanks to gifts you made to the 2017 Annual Fund. Your generosity provided 33% of the total $522,625 we granted in aid for 2017, and for that, both our families and I are very thankful. This past year, we were able to complete many facility upgrades, including installing a new dishwasher and stoves in the Whole Kitchen, two new dryers in the laundry, purchasing new canoes and a minivan, and resurfacing the tennis courts. Our faculty and staff were awarded an all-time high in funding for professional development, and we were able to reinstate an employer match for those participating in our retirement program. Each of these investments significantly improved our infrastructure, our ability to provide exceptional programming and our commitment to the dedicated educators who are at the core of everything we do. As we continue to look toward our Centennial in 2027, we remain focused on building a comprehensive sustainability plan for the entire organization. In 2018, we will undertake a foundation-wide review of diversity, equity, and inclusion at our school and camp to uncover and understand areas where we excel and areas where we can improve. Now more than ever it is vital that we institute best practices in being an open and welcoming community to all while living on this earth with as little environmental impact as possible. To each of you who have lent a hand in this timely and important work, thank you. Truly we would not have the outreach we do without your support. I hope you will join us at an alumni gathering near you in this year ahead to hear more updates, share stories, and relive the special days you spent in our community on 43 Hart Road. With sincere thanks and gratitude,

Letter from the

Camp Director

Many people often wonder what I do during the year when camp isn’t in season. I think it’s hard for them to imagine a camp leader doing something other than exploring the woods, dancing at Lodge, or singing at lunch. While it’s true those are all some of my favorite activities, and summer is definitely my favorite season, there’s actually a lot that I do throughout the year in order to welcome nearly 600 campers at the start of every June. Of all of the things I do during the “off-season,” my favorite has to be connecting with my Eagle’s Nest family—alumni, donors, former and future staff members, and dear friends like you. Each year Eagle’s Nest hits the road to travel from city to city to promote Camp and Hante Adventures in the homes of current enthusiastic campers. These events also give us a chance to catch up with our alums. It has been wonderful to see more and more of you at camp parties, at reunion gatherings, at cookouts during the summer, and even on opening day of

CONFIDENCE

EAGLE’S NEST CAMP & HANTE camp when you drop off your children for their first session at Eagle’s Nest. We love hearing your stories about what Eagle’s Nest has meant to you in your life and development. Over the past month, I’ve been busy interviewing potential staff members for the summer, many of whom are former campers. It’s heart-warming to hear why they want to return to camp. They speak of giving back to a place they feel shaped their life in some positive way and they express a hope to be able to nurture and inspire children the way their counselors inspired them. Last summer Eagle’s Nest celebrated 90 years and we have all of you to thank for helping us reach this milestone and for making 43 Hart Road a home to so many. Because of you, Eagle’s Nest continues to be a place where children are loved and honored as the unique individuals that they are, and where they learn to be kind, responsible members of a community. Former Nesters always ask, “Has camp changed much since I was there?” My answer usually goes a little like this: “There are some new buildings and a few

traditions have evolved, but at the heart, the spirit of Eagle’s Nest is the same and the sense of community you felt is strong as ever.” We would love for you to come visit us, whether it’s for lunchtime singing or a Saturday cookout, you will forever have a home here at the Nest.

INTELLECT

Letter from the

OA Director

We stand today as a people at a crossroads. Will we continue talking “at” each other rather than cooperating to solve the vexing problems that demand immediate solutions? Does character count, or are words like “integrity” and “honor” nothing but quaint artifacts of a simpler time? Will we continue treating the natural world as a mere commodity or will we learn to embrace it as our beautiful home? As long as there is breath in our lungs, we adults must continue struggling with these choices. Unfortunately, it is becoming increasingly likely that we will be passing on to our children more problems than solutions. And given the existential threats inherent in these problems, our children may not have the option of passing them on to their kids. How do we prepare our children for this world they will soon inherit? It won’t be enough just to be smart. Our children will need to be able to make connections between big ideas, perceive

ENVIRONMENT

THE OUTDOOR ACADEMY patterns that have thus far escaped recognition, and break free of the unproductive paradigms that have held us back. Our children will need to love the natural world sufficiently that they will be moved to take aggressive measures to save it. They will need to take pride in the creative works that they craft with their hands and the sweat off their brows. Most importantly, they will need to be able to flourish in community with other problem solvers because the issues they will confront will be too big for the “great woman” or the “great man” working alone. If you read the above paragraph carefully, you will discern the four “Cornerstones” of The Outdoor Academy: intellect, environment, craft, and community. These are the big ideas that inform everything we do at our school, every choice we make. When they established The Outdoor Academy in the 1990s, I don’t know if Helen or Ted or the rest of the founding generation of our school foresaw this point of crisis in our history, this crossroads. But what they created was a school seemingly engineered for this moment. And the fact that our

school is strong and healthy, filled—and sometimes overfilled—with students eager to think big, explore the natural world, create objects of beauty, and join in a community of character, should give us all cause for great optimism. To our many friends and alumni who continue to contribute to this vital work, thank you.

MEMORIAL

In loving memory This past year saw the passing of three beloved members of our Eagle’s Nest family: Moseley Waite, Jay Ellis, and Rachael Panning. These are the donors who generously contributed to honor the legacies of our dear friends.

Mo Waite “He was a great man who will be sorely missed, but the good he brought to this world will live on in us all. To carry on all that he did will be an honor and a high task—in his memory we will do it.” – Noni Waite-Kucera, Mo’s daughter Dr. Benjamin Moseley (Mo) Waite, PhD, died on February 3, 2017. He was a scientist, educator and conservationist. In 1950 Mo’s parents Dr. Alex and Hannah Waite chartered Eagle’s Nest Camp, originally founded in 1927, as a non-profit educational organization. Mo continued the legacy by serving on the ENF Board of Trustees for over 35 years. He also helped found Carolina Camps for Children with Diabetes, providing life changing opportunities for children to learn to manage their illness in a camp setting. Scientist, ceramicist, furniture maker, gardener, pickler, blueberry farmer, white water paddler, world traveler, bibliophile; Mo’s interests and talents ranged as wide as the circle of people who respected and loved him. Jay Ellis

George John “Jay” Ellis, III, 80, died June 18 at Mammoth Cave National Park in Kentucky. He had spent the weekend enjoying a large family reunion, complete with childhood playmates, shared meals, a train ride, and funny stories. After the reunion, Jay visited Mammoth Cave with his three adult children, who grew up at Eagle’s Nest Camp. He died quietly in their presence, in a familiar natural setting within an hour’s drive of his childhood home. Jay spent many summers as medical director of Eagle’s Nest Camp for Children with Diabetes, and after diabetes camp ended, many more years as a board member and strong supporter of Eagle’s Nest. He also actively supported efforts to protect human rights, public health, and the environment. Jay’s legacy at Eagle’s Nest will live on through his service to the community and passion for enriching the lives of young people. Rachael Panning attended The Outdoor Academy as part of Semester 17 in 2003. She died at age 29 on July 17, 2017, after a two-year struggle with brain cancer. While at The Outdoor Academy, Rachael made friends whom she was close with for the rest of her life. Already an outdoor enthusiast, her time at The Outdoor Academy made her even more of a conservationist and wildlife lover, which shaped her later career. Rachael went on to attend Colby College in Waterville, Maine, and graduated with a Biology/ Environmental Science degree. Rachael then worked in a number of conservation-oriented jobs around the country including as a researcher of wolves in Montana, burn ecology in Yellowstone National Park, and sage grouse in California, and as a land trust steward in Wyoming. Throughout her life, Rachael was passionate about spending time in the outdoors. She loved camping, mountain biking, road biking, hiking, skiing, and bird watching. Rachael liked to travel and successfully completed her goal of visiting all 50 states with a trip to Hawaii in November 2016. Most of all, Rachael loved people. Rachael was kind, caring, and considerate, and was a wonderful friend to many. Rachael’s time at The Outdoor Academy had a profound impact on her life. There are many staff members—from OA faculty to summer counselors, to administrators, to camp nurses— who give back not only their time but their financial support to the Annual Fund. These individuals are recognized throughout the Honor Roll with two stars alongside each name. We honor the commitment they have each made to Eagle’s Nest and the young people we serve.
