2018 Eagle’s Nest Foundation
ANNUAL REPORT Experiential education for young people, promoting the natural world and the betterment of human character.
LETTER FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Dear Eagle’s Nest families, Our mission, experiential education for young people promoting the natural world and the betterment of human character, has been strong for our 91 years, and I believe in recent years, increasingly relevant. Your support in bringing this mission alive has been tremendous. This past year, 588 campers and students had the opportunity to spend either a semester at OA or a session at camp or Hante. Of those, 132 were supported by you and your generous gifts amounting to $147,065 – 27% of the total $549,224 granted in financial aid. I know I can speak on behalf of every one of our campers and students when I say the community would not have been the same without the presence of those 132 young people. Additionally, your support allowed for us to make much needed renovations to campus, including refurbishing a faculty house, purchasing canoes, installing beautiful stone steps up to the main office, completing a campus-wide replacement of bunk beds, and removing the maintenance Noni Waite-Kucera has been Executive Director of Eagle’s shed from the center of campus. With the building of a new maintenance Nest Foundation since 2000. facility at the edge of campus, space has been cleared for a new Housing and Office Building in the old shed’s site. This year marked a kick off to raise funds for this amazing new facility. You can read more about the project later in this report and learn how you can be involved in enhancing our facilities at 43 Hart Road. Continuing our efforts in achieving the ENF Centennial Priorities, in 2018 we were graciously awarded a grant to begin the process of creating and executing a cultural vision for Eagle’s Nest that is more inclusive, equitable, and representative of traditionally under-represented communities. In 2018, our staff and trustees completed two training sessions with the Avarna Group and contracted with Niambi Jaha-Echols to propel us into 2019. Her guidance will include helping to draft a commitment statement, completing an already in process organizational assessment, and delivering a series of recommendations and processes to guide us in addressing equity issues as they arise in our community. You will be hearing much more about this initiative in the year ahead. In every aspect of these wide-ranging endeavors, your support this past year has been a driving factor. Truly, we would not have made these advancements without your support, and for that I am extremely grateful. Thank you.

the power gratitude has in increasing happiness and health. When I consider the myriad things that make Eagle’s Nest meaningful, there is no doubt that the culture of gratitude that permeates our community is certainly a main ingredient.

Letter from the
Camp Director This year, I’ve been thinking a lot about
gratitude and the practice of being grateful. I’ve found myself absorbed in articles and podcasts that extol the virtue of recognizing the “good” in others, in nature and in our lives, and in giving thanks for those things. Countless studies show
community
So, as I sit down to write to each of you, our Eagle’s Nest family, it is with deep gratitude for your generosity and commitment to this place we all share and love. Last summer, we were able to award a total of $129,268 in financial aid to 107 campers. We also partnered with organizations in Charlotte and Brevard to bring 16 low income campers to Eagle’s Nest on full scholarships. Many of those campers had previously been at Eagle’s Nest and will return to camp again this summer. One will also be participating in Hante Adventures AT Trek this summer, deepening his connection to the natural world and gaining skills and confidence that will help buoy him in the challenging high school

years. Thanks to all of you, more children were able to connect with the natural world, grow in confidence, feel compassion and experience joy in a warm and nurturing community – our Nest on Hart Road. We are very proud that our strong scholarship program allows campers of varying income levels to experience Eagle’s Nest, and to bring their unique talents and perspectives to our community. Throughout the summer and year, I often receive messages of gratitude from parents or alums about their time at camp or on Hante. It’s gratifying to know that our work is meaningful and that it can be carried on outside of the Nest. Recently, I received the following from a parent of a child who, with the help of financial aid, has attended Eagle’s Nest for many years and is now entering high school:
fostered and strengthened over time through her experiences at Eagle’s Nest. Although there have been a lot of people and places that have benefited my child, Eagle’s Nest has had the most overall positive impact. I know that she would not have this experience without your support. I’m grateful to you for the impact you have had on her life, and also for how that will in turn support the positive impact this camper will make in the world. Thank you for your support. I would love to see you or hear from you, and I welcome you for a visit on 43 Hart Road this summer.

LETTER FROM THE OA DIRECTOR Semesters 46 & 47
Glenn DeLaney (right) with his wife, Julia, and son, Elem.
INTELLECT
As I am settling into my second semester as Director of The Outdoor Academy and getting to know the twenty-eight exceptional young people who have chosen to be a part of Semester 48, I wanted to take a moment to share the profound sense of gratitude I have for all those who generously support OA students and faculty. Because of the connection you feel to this special place and the belief you share in its mission, we have been able to deliver a unique, challenging, and life-changing experience to nearly a thousand students since OA’s inception in 1995.
ENVIRONMENT
THE OUTDOOR ACADEMY
With the 25th Anniversary of The Outdoor Academy approaching, we are seeking to innovate, while also stewarding, the essential traditions of an OA experience. Our partnership with the University of Utah and the Semester School Network (on a multi-year academic study about semester schools) is yielding fascinating information about how effective this type of an educational setting can be in helping young people develop self-confidence, resilience, intellectual curiosity, and problem-solving skills. Simply put, the research and data are confirming that OA’s approach to education works, and the outcomes we achieve with our students are preparing them to return to their sending schools equipped to excel. Even more exciting is the study’s proposition that schools like OA actually accelerate the process by
COMMUNITY
which adolescents formulate and consolidate their identities. Our students are doing more than learning about the Southern Appalachian biosphere while chasing Ted through the campus woods, or how to carve a spoon with Brian in Crafts. They are learning who they are, what they value, and who they want to be. We have the opportunity to help our students shape their lives’ trajectories in meaningful ways and truly seek the betterment of human character. In my estimation, this is the true impact of an Outdoor Academy education...it is quite the gift to give, and I applaud you for helping give it. Again, I thank you for your continued support of Eagle’s Nest Foundation and The Outdoor Academy. I look forward to meeting many more of you in the coming years, and I hope that you will join us on campus sometime soon, whether it is for a Community Dinner or the exciting 25th Anniversary events on April 25, 2020.

CRAFT
SPECIAL CAMPAIGNS
EAGLE’S NEST IS GROWING!
NEW HOUSING & OFFICE BUILDING IN 2020
Our new Housing & Office Building will fulfill a critical need for space for Camp and OA, laying crucial groundwork for the future of these programs. It will empower our community of educators. Our programs demand that our staff and faculty bring their BEST SELVES to this community, and our young people deserve their best. Through this project, Eagle’s Nest will provide comfortable living spaces for our educators to rejuvenate and recharge, a consistent area of need on employee evaluations. This project will replace seasonal rooms in Bilbos and free up single-family homes for OA faculty members year-round.
It will increase recruitment and foster a sense of place. Walking onto campus is a nostalgic experience with the appearance that some things never change, but seasonal transitions happen frequently and can be distruptive. Our new structure will provide year-round office space for our OA Director and Admissions team so that they can "stay centered" during the shifts between the school year and camp and consistently recruit students during the summer months. Our multi-use building design incorporates open and enclosed meeting spaces and a common area for our students and faculty to share, fostering our strong traditions of COMMUNITY and SIMPLE LIVING.
It will soldify our ability to provide programming and our sustainability for the future. At Eagle’s Nest and The Outdoor Academy we understand the impact our structures have on the environment, and we are committed to utilizing sustainable materials, systems, and construction for this building and future projects. The building will be seamlessly integrated into the landscape, minimally impacting the land and blending into existing structures and NATURE.
Building Summary • Year-round office spaces for OA Director and OA Admissions staff, School-Year spaces for Deans • Housing, lounge and kitchen for OA Residents in their time off • Housing for Camp Leadership & Support Staff during summer programs • Relocation of maintenance facilities away from core-campus

TRIBAL CHALLENGE During the 2018 summer camp sessions, campers and alumni were challenged to raise the most donations for their Eagle’s Nest tribe. The tribal system is a foundational part of our camp community. Tribes function as a space for reflection, belonging, growth, support, and inspiration for every member of the Eagle’s Nest community – during their time here at camp and beyond. The 2018 Tribal Challenge raised over $900, with Winnesquam taking first place, followed by Natseeho in second place.

There are many staff members—from OA faculty to summer counselors, to administrators, to camp nurses—who give back not only their time but their financial support to the Annual Fund. These individuals are recognized throughout the Honor Roll with two stars alongside each name. We honor the commitment they have each made to Eagle’s Nest and the young people we serve.
