PreparingYourChildandYouforCamp:

Goingawaytocampforthefirst(orsecondorthird)timecanbeboth thrillingandterrifyingforbothchildrenandparents.Campgiveschildren theopportunitytolearnandpracticevitallifeskillsofindependence, resiliency,relationshipbuilding,courage,andself-efficiency.

Campwillprovidemanyopportunitiesforfunandmagic,andalsomay bechallengingattimes.Wewillsupportyourchildrenastheyface challenges,andwewillhelpthemdevelopthetoolsandconfidencethat theyneedtosuccessfullycareforandsupportthemselvesontheirpathto adulthood.

Talktoyourchildaboutwhatitwillbeliketobeatcampandaboutany fearsthattheymayhave.Letthemknowthat,althoughyouwillnotbe theretohelpthemwhentheyareaway,theircounselorwillprovide wonderfulsupportandcareforthem.

Astheworldbecomesmorecomplexanddemanding,forminghonest,face-to-facerelationshipsbecomesmoredifficult. Atcamp,weunplugfromtechnologygivingourcampersachancetohearournaturalworldandconnectwiththe outdoorsandeachother.Detachmentfromconstantentertainmentorstimulationfromelectronicdeviceswithscreens createsspaceforcreativeplay,problem-solving,andlearning.AtEagle'sNest,wecreateaspaceforchildrentosimply be,awayfrommanyofthedistractionstheyface.

Wefindthatitisenrichingtointeracttogether. Inthecampenvironmentcampersarehappyandtheyareabletochange andgrow.Campistheperfectplacetolivetogetherintentionallyincabinswithpeers,atfamilytablegroupswherewe shareourdailyjoys,doingchoreswherewelearnaboutgivingservicetoacommunity,intheoutdoorswherewelearn aboutlocalfloraandfauna,andonsportsteamswherewelearntoplaytogetheraspartofateam.Camplifeishighly active,structuredandintentional,andfun!

Nextyouwillbeginthecheck-inprocesswhichincludesastop attheHealthHutforquickscreeningsforliceandtomakesure yourcamperiswellandreadyforcamp.Afteryou’vecompleted thisprocess,youandyourchildwillwalktothecabintomeet theircounselorsandbeginthetransition.

Parentsandguardiansareinvitedtospendabriefperiodoftime atyourcamper'scabin,meetingthecounselorsandseeingthe cabin.Pleaseusethistimetoestablishthetransitionofcareto thecounselorsandhugyourchildgoodbye.Ifyoufeelthatthis transitionwillbedifficult,pleasemakea“goodbye”planwith yourchildbeforecomingtocampandstickwiththatplan!We canhelp.

CabinAssignments:

Weaskthatyousupportuson ourcabinassignments.Weread eachapplicationwhenplacing campersintheircabins.Grades incabinsmaychangeeachyear. Somecabinshavemixed grades.

Whenmakingcabin assignmentswereadrequests thatfamilieshavemade,butwe cannotguaranteethatall buddieswillbetogether.

Wewillsupportcampersin buildingfriendshipsintheir assignedcabins.Weencourage newfriendshipsandexpanded horizons.Thanksforunderstandingandsupportingus.

AgeandCabinGrouping:

Campersareacceptedfrom Kindergartengraduates through11thgradegraduates. Participantsaregrouped accordingtogradelevelto ensurehomogeneousmaturity.

Thosewhohavecompleted 10thand11thgrademayserve asJuniorCounselors(JCs). GradesK-6comprisetheranks ofJuniorProgramAssistants (JPAs)andProgramAssistants (PAs).Grades7-9comprisethe CounselorsinTraining(CITs).

Thesecamperranksare designedtoestablishcategories forparticipationincommunity life.

Food:

Weservenatural,healthyfoods.Ourdietatcampconsistsofsimple,made-fromscratchcooking.Weuselotsofhealthyfreshingredientslikewholegrains,local produce,andwhitemeats.Protein-balancedvegetarianoptionsareservedatevery mealforthosewhodesireit.Weusesugarmoderatelyandservedesserts occasionally.Wealsohaveagardenwhichproducessomeoftheproducethatwe useinourmeals.Pleasedonotsendyourchildtocampwithfood.Wecanhonor mostspecialdietaryneedsuponarrangement.Althoughwearenotanut-free campus,wewillnotservenutsintheDiningHalloratsnackduringanysessionthat includesaparticipantwhoisatriskforananaphylaxistonuts.Thankyoufor helpingusgethealthy,naturalfoodsonourtablesandpromotinghealthyeating habits.

SwimmingatEagle'sNest:

AtEagle'sNestwetestcamperstoassesstheirswimmingabilities.Knowingeach camper'sswimmingabilitieshelpsusplanforthemanywater-orientedactivitiesin whichtheywillparticipateatcamp.Theswimmingtestincludesswimmingonthe frontandback,jumpingintodeepwaterandtreadingwaterfor2minutes.

Camperswhoareunabletoswimareencouragedtotakeswimclassesatcamp eithereverydayoreveryotherday.Ourswimprogramhelpsusmeetourmission byteachingavaluablelifeskillthatcampersneedinordertoparticipateinmanyof ouractivities.Swimmingcanalsobeafunoutdooractivitythathelpskidsstepout oftheircomfortzonesandfacesomeoftheirfearsaboutlakesandothernatural bodiesofwater.

ExpectationsforBehavior:

Eagle’sNestpromotesasafeandnurturingcommunityinwhichchildrenandteenagersmaymatureatanappropriate pace.Weareveryclearwithourcampersaboutourrulesandboundaries,andaboutourexpectationsfortheirbehavior. Wealsoteachthemtounderstandtheconnectionbetweentheirbehavior(goodorundesirable)andtheresulting consequences(naturalandimposed).Weteachourcounselorstotalkwithparticipantstounderstandtheirneedssothat

theydonotpracticeundesirablebehaviorsinordertohavetheirneedsmet.Forexample,ifachildhasahighneedfor freedom,counselorwillworktomeetthoseneedsbygivingthecampermultiplechoicesandalsounstructuredtimeand space.Wehelpcampersunderstandtheirneedsandaskforhelpwhentheyneedit.Whentheystruggle,wearenot punitive,insteadweoperatethroughasenseofcaringforourcampers.Thereare;however,somebehaviorsthatcreatean unsafeenvironmentatcampandwillleadtodismissal.Pleasereferto Important Policies and Practices 2024 documentin CampDoc.

EatingHabitsandDisorderedEating:

Unfortunately, we do see children with disordered eating. Eagle's Nest is not equipped to counsel those with serious eatingdisorders. Camperseatin smallfamilygroupedtablesof six toeightcampers andtwocounselors. Counselors monitorandencouragehealthyeatinghabits.

Homesickness:

There'sagoodchancethatyourchildwillmisshomeatsomepoint,justasyouwillprobablymissyourchild. Homesicknessstemsfromabreakwithfamiliar,lovingconnections—tohome,family,pets,routine,etc.Ourbestwayto handlehomesicknessistostartbuildingstrongnewconnectionswithcampersrightaway,sothattheyfeelsecureand knowthattheyarenotalone.Wedothisinmanywaysthroughthemanycommunitiesthatexistatcamp.Wearealso veryin-tunewithspottingandcaringforhomesicknessinakindandnurturingway.Ifthehomesicknessisacuteand continuesformorethanadayortwo,wewillcontactyoutoletyouknowwhatishappeningandenlistyourhelpwitha plan.Generally,wewillnotallowthecampertotalkwithyouasthatisn'thelpfultothecamperortheparent/guardian.If thecamperdoestalkwithyou,pleasesupportthembeingatcampanddonottellthemthatyou'llcomeandgetthem. Pleasetrustthatwearecaringforandnurturingyourchildthroughtheirhomesickness.Pleasealsoknowthatyourchild willfacesimilardiscomfortsinlife,andthatthisexperiencewillhelpthemlearntobesuccessfulandresilientasthey meetotherchallengingsituations.

Youcanalsohelpbypreparingyourchildtounderstandwhatthetimeperiodofonetothreeweeksreallymeans.Makea samplesessioncalendarlaidoutonbigpaperand"live"thattimeperiodbeforecamp.Letyourchildknowthatyouare proudofthemforgoingaway.Remindthemthatit'sokaytofeelhomesickattimes,andthattheircounselorwillhelp themwhentheymisshome.Donottellyourchildthattheymaycomehomeiftheydon'tlikecamp.Ifyoudo,itwillbe verydifficultforustocounselandsupportthemwhentheyarehomesick.

SexualActivity:

Werecognizethatsexualityisavitalaspectofgrowthinyoungpeople.We feelthatschoolsandorganizationssuchasours,whichareinterestedinthe totalgrowthofyoungpeople,mustaddressthisfact.Wehavefoundthatthe campsettingbecomes,forsomecampers,anenvironmentwherethecamper becomescomfortableenoughtoaskquestionsconcerningsexand/ortheir sexuality.Ourstaffhasbeentrainedduringorientationtofieldquestionsor discussionsamongcampers,inanage-appropriate,healthy,andsensitive manner.TheEagle'sNestplanforourcommunityistoprovide,firstand foremost,awell-communicatedstructurethatourcampersandJunior Counselorscanunderstandandliveupto.Campersandparticipantsmaynot participateinsexualactivitieswhileatEagle'sNest.

CabinRules:

Atthebeginningthesessioncounselorswillguideeachcabingroupastheycreateasetofrulesthateveryonecanagreeto. Theywillalsoreviewotherimportantcabinrulestokeepcampersphysicallyandemotionallysafe.Campersareneveroneon-onewitheachotherorwithacounselor.Counselorshelpfacilitatecabinboundingandhealthyrelationshipsandalso monitorforundesirablerelationships,bullyingandexclusion.

BedtimeRules/AfterLightsOutHours:

Camping:

Eachcabinwillgoonanovernightcampingtripduringthesession(duringSession4notallcabinswillhavetimeto campout)andmanyoutdoorclasseswillalsohavecampouts.Onovernightcampingexpeditions,camperssleepinsinglegenderedtarpsandtents.Counselorsmonitortentgroups.

Dress:

Weexpectparticipantstodressinamannerthatisfunctionalandappropriateforacommunityofchildrenandteens. Clothingshouldcoverandbeabletocontinuetocoverprivatepartsandundergarments(withtheexceptionof waistbandsandshoulderstraps)regardlessoftheactivity.Fabriccoveringprivatepartsmaynotbemeshorsee-through. Exceptwhenswimming,participantsandstaffshouldalwayswearashirt(shirtsanddressesmusthavesides,afrontand straps/fabricovertheshoulders,andmustcoverundergarmentswiththeexceptionofbrastrapsandwaistbands),shorts, skirts,dressesorpants(thatcoverbuttocks),andshoes.Forswimming,participantsshouldwearbathingsuitsthatcover andcontinuetocoverprivateareas,andmaynotbesee-through.Bathingsuitscanbeone-piece,twopieces,shortsanda sportsbraoranycombination.

· Campersshouldnotwearclothingthatadvertisestobacco/vapingproductsoralcohol,orweararticlesof clothingcontainingprofanity,sexualconnotations,racialslurs,hatespeech,ornegativemessages. Bodypiercingsshouldnotcreatesafetyissuesandparticipantsorstaffwillbeaskedtoremovejewelrythatdoes createasafetyissue.

CamperCleanliness:

Aspartofmaintaininggoodhealthwhileatcamp,campersshowerandchangeclothesdaily. Ifyourchildisnotusedto takingashowerpleaseteachthemthisskillbeforecamp.Counselorsarealsoinstructedtobewatchfulforskin infections,poisonivyoutbreaks,andgeneralhealthofeachoftheircampers.

LossandTheft:

Theftisextremelyrareatcampbutcanoccur.Sincecamperscanlosetrackofpreciousitemsthattheybringtocamp pleasedonotbring/sendcostlyandvaluableobjectslikejewelry,expensiveornewclothing,expensivewatches,etc.to camp.Weunderstandyourdesiretopurchasevaluableoutdoorequipmentsuchassleepingbags,boots,etc.forcamp; however,mostexpensivegearisnotnecessary.Wedoeverythingwecantohelpthecamperusegoodcarehabits.The camperwillbegivenhelpwiththisthroughguidancefromtheircounselor.Attheendofthesession,campersaregiven supervisedcabintimeforpackingandotherfinalcabinactivities.Still,manycampersstruggletokeepupwiththeir personalthingsandoftengohomemissingafewitemswithwhichtheyarrived.Priortocamp,pleasehaveadiscussion withyourchildabouthowtocarefor(andrecognize)theirpossessions.Itwillhelpiftheyareinvolvedwithpackingfor camp. ReasonsforExpulsion

1. DrugsandAlcohol:Ifacamperbringsorusesillegalsubstances,drugparaphernalia,oralcoholatcamp,oncamptrips,oratanyEagle'sNestFoundation program,oroffersillegalsubstancesoralcoholtoothers,theywillbesenthomeonthe firstoffenseandwillnotbeabletoparticipateinanotherEagle'sNestFoundation sponsoredprogramforatleastoneyear.Counselorsarecarefullyscreenedandwill receivethesameconsequencesiftheyviolatethispolicy.

2. Smoking: the use of tobacco products, including e-cigarettes or similar vaping devices, are not permitted at Eagle's Nest Camp. A violation of this rule is grounds for expulsionfromtheprogram.

3. SexualActivity:Physicallyintimateactivity,ofanysort,atcamporonHante Adventuresbyparticipants,includingJCs,isnotacceptableandisgroundsfordismissal.Camperslearntohaveinclusive,notexclusive,relationshipsandleavecamp withgoodfriendsandaloveforthemselvesandwhotheyare.

4. DisregardofENFRegulations: AnycamperorparticipantwhodisregardsENF regulationsisliableforexpulsion.Thisincludesharassmentor bullying.

IfEagle'sNestisunabletoeffectivelycounselachild,andiftheiractionsbreak Eagle'sNestpolicy,thechildwillbesenthomewithoutarefundandwillnotbe abletoparticipateinanyEagle'sNestFoundationsponsoredprogramforatleast oneyear.
