efore a workout it is important to eat foods with complex sugar and carbohydrates. A possible example is to eat a piece of toast with butter and cinnamon. “A banana is a good thing to incorporate into a pre-workout snack. The body does not store potassium very long, so a medium banana can get you going. I like whole wheat toast with some peanut butter and bananas to get some carbs for fuel,” Coach Stephen Kirwan said. While doing a workout, it is recommended to drink plenty of water. This will help combat exhaustion during and after workouts. “Hydrate often. Water is best. Take

frequent sips of water throughout a workout,” Kirwan said. After a workout it is important to replenish energy, usually something like a granola bar can fill that role. Protein rich foods like chicken, beef, nuts, and milk can be very useful. Protein is fuel for muscles, so make sure to eat plenty of it in order to make the most out of workouts. “Use fluids for re-hydrating, carbs for replacing energy and protein to repair and build muscle in the recovery process. Chocolate milk is the new craze. It has it all and is better than sports and energy drinks. It’s more practical and affordable also. Runners love it!” Kirwan said.

A

n important thing to remember before any workout is to make sure to stretch. Not stretching can actually hurt the body and increase a chance of a strain if not done or not done right. To work out abs for 5 minutes, cycle through elbow planks, crunches, and leg lifts. Make sure when exercising abs, do not do crunches with your neck or planks with your arms as it works out the wrong muscles. “I do 15 squats, and usually 45 sit ups. For cardio I will either take a walk with friends around my neighborhood, or ride my bike when its warm out,” sophomore Briana Byrd said. For core cardio filled exercise, do jumping jacks, up downs, or a simple run. Even indoor exercising is great for the body. Jogging in place or running on a treadmill is a good substitute for anyone not willing to go out in the cold, or who just don’t like running outside. “400 and 800 workouts had to run a 400 at a specific time and then a quick break, then 200 until we create a mile, it’s really fun but difficult,” junior AnnaLynn Blackwell said. Arm-focused workouts are great, too. There are a couple of simple exercises you can do. One exercise is just simple pushups, which can be effective for exercising your pectorals. Planks with your arms can help build triceps and shoulder muscles. “I go to the community center to workout with my dad and sometimes brother. Usually work on my chest and back,” senior Eric White said.

hile athletes push their bodies to the limit, sweat dripping from the brow, their confidence and performance excel with flattering and flexible exercise outfits. “I love wearing leggings during a workout because of the free range of motion they allow. I also love anything made by Nike because they are stylish and their products go with so many things,” senior Libby Westhues said. A constant dilemma of trying to look cool and stay cool while working out is solved with loose-fitting tank tops. “Usually I’d wear a bro-tank or a cut-off to workout. Sometimes you have to look at yourself in the mirror. Then I’d add shorts, athletic shoes, and maybe some cool high socks. You’ve got to be stylin’,” junior Jon Redmond said. For an on-the-go exercise routine find cute comfortable clothes as well as shoes to provide support every step of the way. “My typical workout outfit would include some patterned long athletic leggings and a Dri-Fit tee shirt. I also really like Nike tennis shoes,” sophomore Hailey Gibboney said. One key to exercise success lies in finding a brand to encourage physical activity and look fashionable with every move. “Typically I just wear a t-shirt and shorts when I work out. I like to wear Nike athletic clothes because they are comfortable and stylish. Usually when I go running I wear Nike shoes,” freshman Connor Kline said.

In the spirit of love check out eagle’s Break up stories Story by Emily Fuller | Photos by Dillon Erwin | Design by Catherine Hemenway

B

reakups have been and always will be a part of relationships. However breaking up is such a broad topic, here are three techniques people have either used or have been the victim of. The first breakup technique is to find the nearest way out. Finding the nearest way out of a relationship is waiting for something to happen, some sort of problem to make an even bigger deal and finally give reason to break up. “My ex girlfriend and I met in high school. We dated for three years in college and once she was done she moved back to Texas where she was originally from. Because I was so head over heels I followed her out there. Things were good, or so I thought until my cousin told me he wanted to move down to Texas so I told him yeah, that it would be a blast. I told my girlfriend and she got mad, told me that wasn’t okay, and then dumped me,” algebra teacher Wesley McCully said. Timing influences how an entire breakup goes over. Timing can range from whether the break up has been planned out and goes smoothly, or is a quick decision and ends abrupt. The second breakup technique is to do it out of the blue. “My ex boyfriend and I met through friends and it was the perfect scenario because my best friend was dating his best friend. It was both

of our first long term relationships and it was pretty solid. We had been dating for a little over eight months and then one day he hit me with the, “We need to talk” and broke up with me over snapchat… the day before Thanksgiving. I didn’t see this coming because we had just hung out the night before and things were totally fine. It was completely out of the blue,” junior Julia Muchow said. Ending a relationship is usually destined to happen and most of the time the goal is to avoid hurting the other person. Although, not hurting the person you are ending things with is usually not a possibility. The third breakup tactic is to end things slowly but surely. “Me and my ex stop talking because I stopped having feelings for her and didn’t want the needed commitment. I distanced myself away slowly, then stopped texting her. She noticed things were different and confronted me about it. We talked it out and now we’re friends,” sophomore Brinkley Wilson said. Breakups, whether they go over terribly or nicely sometimes have to be done, using these three tips are a good place to start. “It’s always interesting hearing about how people have gotten broken up with. People can be totally graceful or total jerks when cutting the tie,” senior Allie Dorband said.

“It was completely out of the blue” junior Julia Muchow said.

Eagles’ ways of getting over their ex’s

Ex Proof Phone “I know a lot of people will delete their ex’s number after breaking up. It gets rid of the temptation of bickering with them.” junior Brynne Davis said.

Netflix “After my first breakup I stayed home and watched Friends all the time with my cat. I did not want to go out because I felt so bad, so I had my friends come over as well,” senior Alydia Claypool said.

Stay Busy “I hung out with other people and just tried to keep my mind off it, and food also helped,” junior Dakota Treece said

Meet New People “I found that it was easier to move on if I surrounded myself with new postive faces,” senior Allie Norman said.

What is the key difference How many Americans between a Primary Election and participate in the General a General Election? Election? The Primary Election serves as a party nomination for the general election. When the primary election takes place it is between all presidential candidates in the specific party either Republican or Democrat. It is usually known as the preliminary step to deciding the president. The General Election is the actual process of electing the president between the nominees of the Democratic Party, Republican Party and sometimes an Independent Party.

Who is the leading Democratic Candidate in the polls for the General Election?

The leading Democratic nominee in the polls against another Republican nominee is Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. having the highest poll count against the majority of Republican nominees, exceptions made for Marco Rubio and Donald Trump.

What’s the most important thing a candidate can have? The most important thing a candidate can have according to numerous people including myself is solid media support. The more the candidate’s name shows up on social media, magazines and television the more successful they get in the campaign.

Who is the leading Republican Candidate in the polls for the General Election?

The leading Republican nominee in the polls against another Democratic nominee is Florida Senator Marco Rubio who has the highest poll count against both Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders.

America’s voter turnout seems to be doing nothing but decreasing more and more every term. As quoted by the Bipartisan Policy Center, “Voter turnout dipped from 62.3 percent of eligible citizens voting in 2008 to an estimated 57.5 percent in 2012.”

Why do so many people support Donald Trump?

There are a couple reasons why Donald Trump holds so much support from Americans. First Donald Trump has never stepped foot in a political position in his life, meaning he’s a fresh face that has no “corruption” inside of him. Secondly he has all the money he needs to hold a strong campaign. He requires no funding and that sends a message to the American people that he can’t be bought. Finally, Donald Trump seems to get the most attention out of all other candidates, he has a ton of media support-as unfortunate as that is.

Why are states like Iowa and New Hampshire so important?

States including Iowa and New Hampshire are extremely important to presidential candidates for a couple reasons. Iowa is the first state to decide who they believe the presidential candidate should be and a lot of times they match up with the nation’s belief. Many believe the state of New Hampshire should be considered more important because it has a state law saying it must hold the first primary in the nation for the president. But Iowa found a way to curve over this law, instituting a caucus rather than a primary.

osing a loved one can be incredibly difficult, especially for high school students. Junior Nick Jones has experienced a lost loved one just recently. His sister was five years old and passed away only a few weeks ago on January 4. Being his little sister, he had a very close relationship with her. “My sister’s name was Arynn Urban. We had a very close relationship because she was my little sister. She was only five. ” Jones said. Jones played games with his little sister and spent quite a bit of time with her before she died. Jones has many favorite memories and moments of being with Arynn and remembers them to commemorate her loss. He tries to keep her with him to celebrate her life and remember the times he had with her before she passed away. “I just spent a lot of time doing different things with her like doing magic tricks and playing Barbie doll house with her before she died. Those were some of my favorite memories and moments that we had with each other before she passed away,” Jones said. There were challenges and difficulties that Jones had to go through and face with his family after the loss of his loved one, but he tries to remember the good times that he had with his little sister. He does certain things to help incorporate and keep Arynn into his life when things get hard or he just wants to keep her close with him and remember he life before she passed away. “I try to incorporate her into my life by doing things like listening to a lot of different music and looking at pictures that I have of her before she passed away to help me keep her in my life and celebrate the times that we had,” Jones said.

mother is someone a girl needs in her life to be there for support and to pick up the pieces when things go wrong. Unfortunately, some people’s time with their loved ones get cut short. Junior Emily Williamson lost her mother two years ago when she was a freshman. “It happened on November 6, 2013. She died in her sleep. We are pretty sure a blood clot ran through her heart. My mom had a ton of medical issues,” Williamson said. Going from seeing someone everyday to only having memories of them can be challenging for students. All of a sudden that person is not there to talk to and help through hard times. “It’s hard not having a mom that I can call every single day or to hang out with. There’s a lot of things I told her that I really don’t like talking to my dad about. Overall, it’s just hard not being able to see her and talk to her when she was the one who was supposed to help get me through life,” Williamson said. Coping with losing someone you can be easier with family and great friends there to help through it. Williamson turned to her friends and family to help handle her loss.. “I usually talk or hang out with my friends to get it off my chest or to get my mind off of my mom. I just try not to think about it every single day. I also have gotten a lot stronger when dealing with problems now. I recently lost my aunt and I handled that situation a lot better because I know things will get better in the end,” Williamson said.

t is difficult to deal with unexpected passings.. Sophomore Lucas Mulac lost a loved one suddenly when he was young. His dad, Neil Mulac, passed away when he was deployed for the military. He had special memories with him even though he was only four when it happened. He still remembers the times he and his father shared before his father passed. “I just remember one moment where my whole family was sitting on the porch with him before he deployed, and they let me open the champagne bottle. That was a very special moment for me because that was the last time that I saw my him,” Mulac said. Despite the special memories Mulac cherishes, he still faces challenges without having a father in his life. His family has to go through difficulties and learn to accept them everyday. Throughout the hard times, Lucas can always remember the bond he shared with his dad. “It was hard when I first found out that he passed, but I didn’t really understand it because I was so young. I don’t remember a lot, but I know him and I were really close. I was his first son so I know he loved me a lot,” Mulac said. Mulac tries to do different things to incorporate his dad in his daily life still after his death, and continues to remember his favorite moments with him. “I have a picture of that last moment on the porch before he left again that lays right beside my bed when I sleep at night to help keep him in my life and remember him before he passed away,” Mulac said.

alentine’s Day - the holiday where people’s true colors shine through and you can watch as their honest feelings about this thing we call love flood out of their enormouse mouths. As most know, there are typically two types of Valentineys in this world: those who cannot wait to celebrate their love for a significant other and those who cannot wait to spend the day belittling the people who do. The Eagle’s View staff tends to lean more towards the latter side. Although we believe it’s great to express love for a boyfriend/girlfriend, we also believe people can go a little overboard when it comes to Valentine’s Day. Why just spend one day of the year celebrating love? Although this thought is extremely logical, there will still be many over achieving boyfriends going out and spending boatloads of money on their baes for this one “special” day. He may be broke by the end of it, but supposably will have proven his love for his woman and that seems to be all that matters in many cases. Just a hint of advice - try showing your special someone how you feel every day, not just on this one day. Be classy, not cliche.

hen I think of the three letters “PDA,” all I have in my mind is a couple making out in a public place, causing everyone around them excessive discomfort. The couples that take public displays of affection too far are oftentimes kids my own age. Although, this negative connotation is not always completely accurate. Public displays of affection can include holding hands, hugging, or even just a peck on the lips. For some reason everyone has it in their mind that PDA always consists of two people all over each other. While this definitely happens, I think the idea of PDA in itself is okay. Liking someone so much that you want to show your affection in public is sweet, especially if it only entails hugging, holding hands, and maybe the occasional kiss. There is definitely a time and a place to be overly affectionate. At school specifically, any public displays of affection should be kept at a PG-13 level. Although taken too far in some cases, public displays of affection can sometimes make even the most unromantic people say ‘aw.’

o all those who feel the need to show their “love” for each other in the hallways with never-ending hugs and tongue-down-the-throat kisses, please stop. As a young Catholic girl, I am a big believer in loving your neighbor; however, showing affection to your beloved is not the equivalent of sucking face with them in public. Be respectful of yourselves and others by keeping the obnoxious physical PDA to a minimum and learn to express your feelings for one another with more appropriate actions. Instead of PDA in your relationship, try PDL. Public Displays of Love. For example: opening a door, walking hand in hand, or going out of your way to do something kind for your boyfriend or girlfriend. These little acts of love charm hearts more than a public make-out session ever could. Remember the greatest illustration of love in our world is painted in sacrifice, in denying yourself pleasure for the good of another. Please spare yourselves and others those awkward moments by choosing to be chaste at school, and keep in mind the reason we are here: to learn.

s my phone’s text bubble pops up, I look down and cannot help but let out a silent cry. It’s only halfway through the month and my family’s shared data plan is already 90% used. Considering that I’m most likely the one to blame, my phone then proceeds to blow up with enraged text messages from my family members yelling at me. I keep finding myself having to explain how I’m not purposely using 25 gigabytes of our 30 gigabytes data plan, it just happens! This situation seemed to happen almost every month, and yet I still couldn’t seem to overcome the issue. Finally accepting the fact that I was going to have to deal with being practically disowned from my family, I happened to come across an AT&T commercial that advertised an unlimited data bundle. Our family switched phone carriers and we all now have unlimited data. Tears of joy were shed as my brother and I hugged the AT&T man who at this point was a complete stranger. What I learned from this experience is that life gets better. Life gets better, and I LOVE UNLIMITED DATA.

lthough I could spend ages explaining why I am so against high school relationships, I will have to condense these feelings into 200 words (which may or may not be one the hardest things I’ve ever had to do). Too many young folks seem to believe they have met their “other half” amidst these dreary high school halls, but for about 99% of you, I can assure that’s not the case. I mean, let’s get real here, most relationships in high school end in utter disaster (and there’s no denying it). I know this because I am constantly witnessing people on Twitter and Insta expressing their post breakup depression - no joke, this is literally a daily occurrence. But, lucky for ice cream shops, because of this so called “young love” and the heartbreak that comes along with it, their business is booming. Now, don’t get me wrong, I have, on few occasions, seen young Opinion Editor students seemingly finding their significant other within the walls of Column by Hannah Richardson high school, but this is rare. So, although I’m not a huge fan of high school relationships, I respect the people who seem to make it work.

ost people who see the phrase “long distance relationship” cringe. They immediately think the relationship is ruined and completely over just for the little detail of living hours and hours away. Society is constantly bashing LDRs like they are literally one of the worst things ever! I mean sure, it is going to be a total struggle considering you can only see your significant other through the screen of a phone. But why end something good based solely on distance? If there is a spark, there is a spark and no one can deny it. Who cares what other people think, you might as well try out the whole long distance thing if you really like talking to this person. Don’t throw something good out the window before giving it a shot; maybe it could turn into something you never expected. If you had asked me how I felt about long distance about 2 years ago, I probably would have been on the “your relationship will fall apart” bandwagon. I have since then opened my eyes a little and come to my sense that distance should not be a big problem like society makes it out to be.

uite frankly, it is easy to get down and out about life. We are surrounded with stress and negativity, and it can become extremely overwhelming. The media fixates on the negatives, and rightfully so because they are so intriguing, however it is important to see the light in life. Here is a list of what rocks about life. Ready, set, go: Mrs. Higgins (and likewise adults), having exact change, sunny winter days, free snacks, cheap snacks, lakes, uncommon vocabulary, tan lines, concerts, getting away with missing a curfew, the sensation one gets when breaking through the surface of water, Isaac Keller (and likewise teenagers), people who don’t stress out over grades, being physically fit, sharing a laugh with a stranger, when pizza rolls don’t spill out on the pan, trees, hot showers, summer night drives with the windows down, coming home to a finished dinner, and other awesome things. Although these may not be the things that rock in your life, I am sure you could make a list of your own with some pretty cool things.

For the Love of the game Passion to play, play to win

any students at Liberty North have faced a crisis while being a part of a sport. From being injured, to losing a loved one, to having the doctors say it’s unlikely for them to continue the sport they love. But their love for the sport has helped them overcome the obstacles they have faced. “You don’t really realize how much you love playing until you can’t anymore, but injuries and life happens, and it’s just something you have to push through so you can get back to doing what you love,” freshman Josie Smith said. A couple of months ago, Smith was playing in a school volleyball tournament and ended up dislocating her kneecap. Her parents rushed her to the hospital to find out she needed surgery because she tore a ligament. The doctors said it would be a long and hard recovery, but all Smith wanted to do was play volleyball. “Injuries are kind of scary, but when you’ve been doing something that you love for so long, all you want to do is get back to it,” Smith said. The basketball court can lead to many injuries. Last year, Senior JD Braden went for a rebound and landed wrong. The doctors told him his foot was broken and placed him in a boot

for 9 weeks. Braden had to wait for his foot to heal, all the while keeping his spirits high and still supporting the team. When the doctor told Braden he could go back, he was excited to play the game he truly loves. “I love basketball because it’s fast paced and has the team concept along with it. The recovery was hard for me but If you truly love what you do, you can get through it,” Braden said. While some athletes face injuries, Senior Kailee Knudsen lost her dad/coach. The summer before her freshman year, Knudsen’s dad was diagnosed for the second time with Leukemia. He was constantly in and out of the hospital fighting the cancer and the side effects of the bone marrow transplant. It was a difficult time for Knudsen because he had been her coach for softball and basketball since she was 6. In July 2013, Knudsen’s father passed away. “I have continued to play both softball and basketball in memory of him. It is extremely difficult for me to play without him here to coach me or give me advice when I’m doing something wrong or encourage me when I am doing good. I know he would be really proud of me and what I have accomplished,” Knudsen said.
