Madelyn Seley: State Trumpet Soloist

MSHAA’s annual solo and ensemble contest was held recently, and many North students were successful enough to qualify for state. As a freshman, Madelyn Seley received a “Superior” rating on her trumpet solo. “I had to practice a lot. I was expecting to get a ‘2.’ I practiced every other day, played it straight through, and then I worked on the hard rhythms and parts over and over again until I got it accurate,” Seley said. For other students preparing for contest in the future, Mattie suggests practicing as much as possible. She claims practice is key. “Practice a lot. Choose a piece that suits you well that’s not too challenging or too easy. It challenged me to work hard,” Seley said.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Tyler Richards: Academic Scholar

Senior Tyler Richards has recently been nominated for an award not very many students get. Because of his ACT score and GPA, Richards has been awarded with Missouri’s Academic Scholar award. “Good grades come naturally to me, however, I do make sure my work is done correctly and on time. If you want good grades, do the homework and study if you need to,” Richards said. Besides getting good grades, another factor that can help improve test scores in general does not just involve preparation. “If I were to give advice it would be to relax. They simply want to know if you have a basic understanding of the general concepts. If you don’t stress too much over it, you should be fine,” Richards said.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Hillary Albert: Scholar Bowl Member

Thanks to hard work and determination, the Liberty North Scholar Bowl team successfully dominated at the 2014 districts. One student in particular, Hillary Albert, helped make that happen. “We have one person study history, one person study literature, and someone study math,”sophomore Hillary Albert said Along with studying hard,, Albert contributed much of the needed concentration needed while competing. “The competition was pretty tough. We just have a wide variety of knowledge. There were a couple of little pieces that we had people that are really good at do so if we got any questions, we would for sure get them,” Albert said. {Photos by Hailey Wasser and Mary Coogan} e

Warped Tour Review By: Hailey Wasser The Vans Warped Tour is a music tour involving a number of bands. Ever since 1995, Vans, the shoe manufacturer, has sponsored this event along with multiple other sponsors. This event starts at about 11:00 AM. It lasts the entire day and most of the night due to the large number of bands that perform. The locations are always older buildings or parking lots, sometimes even just an open field. This year, the closest stop

is Bonner Springs, KS. The bands will be playing live at Cricket Wireless Amphitheatre. The theatre is big open stage on 130th Street. Because the event is long and lasts all day and most of the night, there are multiple food vendors through every show. Each band has a different type of music. Throughout the night there is a mix of rock n’ roll, hip hop, and many more.

Book Review

9

Review By: Becca Saffier Popular. It is a word commonly associated with jocks, Mean Girls, and high school in general. Could it, however, be commonly associated with anyone? After stumbling across a 1950s how-to guide on getting popular, 15-yearold Maya Van Wegener was determined to find out. This is not just the main character, however; this is the author herself, writing a memoir of her experiences as she applies this “vintage wisdom” to her life. When I originally heard about Maya and her book, it was because my mom heard about it from another mom, who is friends with Maya’s aunt. How cool is that? I was floored by Maya’s success. At the age of 15, she has already published a book, and Dreamworks has already

zeroed in on the movie rights. It has climbed so fast, in fact, that I have been unable to obtain a copy in time for this review. Fail? I think not. Just from the Amazon preview, I am already hooked and have more than enough to write about. Maya writes with wit and poise, telling it like it is, and with a voice all her own. She is relatable, quirky, and flawed: just like every other teenage girl. The difference is that she actually does something about it, devoting each month of her eighth grade year to a chapter of Betty Cornell’s Teen-Age Popularity Guide. Is she successful? I certainly intend to find out.

The Other Woman Review By: Taylor Thompson

Going into the movie The Other Woman, I expected it to just be a more grown-up version of the 2006 high school comedy, John Tucker Must Die. I was wrong. While there were some similarities- i.e, a group of three women getting revenge on a man who had played all of themthere were also many differences that made it one of the best movies I have seen in a really long time. One of the many reasons I enjoyed this movie so much was because of how funny it was. The film was filled with many laugh out loud moments and also some cringe-worthy scenes that would make anyone just about die with embarrassment. The actresses chosen for the lead roles (Cameron Diaz, Kate Upton, and Leslie Mann) were absolutely perfect and made the movie even

more relatable than it already was. It also helped that the man who was “The Cheater” was a total slimeball. But I think the main reason I enjoyed the film so much was because it was one of the best girl power movies in a long time. It was about finding and standing up for yourself even when it is hard to do and against someone you loved. Rediscovering who you are in the midst of a traumatic and devastating time and finding unlikely friends who support you and are there to kick some butt with you is the main theme of the movie. I would definitely recommend this movie to anyone who is looking for a laugh but also some inspiration to not let people walk all over you and be strong. May 2014

Game Night Having a game night can be a good way to talk face to face with friends and forget about daily worries. Invite a few friends over and have them all bring some board games like Apples to Apples, Monopoly, or Pictionary.

Pool Party Having a day to tan with friends is a usual summer deal for girls who need the sun power and the need for color. “Not a lot of my friends have ‘pool parties,’ but we do get together at the pool and just tan all day long. We definitely bring lots of water and some snacks,” junior Alayna Powell said.

Summer

Outdoor Movie Party Everything is better outside, especially during summer time. An outdoor movie party would be a fun way to make this summer unforgettable! Project the movie outside and onto a blank wall. Have friends bring a variety of movies, blankets, and of course, food!

Bonfire Bonfires are a cheap and fun way to make this summer great. To top it all off, have a s’mores bar so all guests can have easy access to one of the most enjoyed bonfire treat. Have your friends bring chairs and blankets so they can crowd around the fire and enjoy the night.

Pool Party Having a pool in your backyard makes things a lot easier to throw pool parties in the summer. “If I was invited to a pool party, I would bring those floaties, lemonade and chips. I really enjoy just my friends’ company and since I have a pool in my backyard, that really helps to throw parties and have just friends over to swim,” sophomore Raley Anzelone said. May 2014

16 Lifestyle Adding accessories like a necklace and hair wrap help to dress the outfit up without adding too much. To match a printed skirt, try a plain shirt or tank. Try to make sure it is plain because two prints can be too much.

Maxi skirts are a good, comfortable choice for summer. They are perfect for any occassion. Try a colorful, printed one for an extra pop. Strappy sandals are a nice go to shoe for summer. Pair a brown sandal to match some bright summer colors.

People with an hourglass figure have the classic developed hips as well as chest. Vintage style swimsuits help compliment this figure. A popular choice would be high waisted bottoms with a bandeau to complete the hourglass shape.

Hair Styles

These simple hair styles will make the summer more enjoyable “I love natural curls during the summer because they are an easy hairstyle for after the pool, I usually will just use a sea salt spray to add more texture.” sophomore Anna Hink said.

Sometimes the best solution, when frustrated, is just to cut it all off. “My long hair annoyed me because it was a hassle to do and I thought it would look cute short, So I cut it” freshmen Amber Ray said.

Sunburn Treatments 1. Use a cold compress to the affected areas such as cold wash cloth or paper towel to get the sunburn to cool down so it will heal.

2. Take aspirin or ibuprofen immediately after exposure to the sun to relieve sunburn discomfort and and inflammation. 3. Stay out of sun exposure until discomfort is resolved so that the sunburn doesn’t get worse

Many girls have long hair and it gets annoying, so one way to get rid of the frustration is to put it up in a braid. “To keep my hair out of my face, its easy and time efficient,” sophomore Savanna Schoen said.

SENIORS: ADIOS OR BABY COME BACK? Like It.

Love It.

Hate It.

Written By: Danielle Camerlink

Written By: Cailey Hagen

Written By: Dylan Morgan

I am indifferent when it comes to the seniors leaving. I like that there is less traffic, but one thing I dislike about the seniors leaving is that some of them are just going to work or lay around all day, while we have to go to school doing homework, exams and then finals. My opinion in this matter is jealousy rather than likeness; no hate or love in this relationship, but to no avail we see that seniors leave on the 12th and it has to be half a month later for the underclassmen to be free. I like that the seniors are gone just for space. The school is crowded all the time; having one less grade relieves the tight fit that is in the hallways and the space during Eagle Hour. I am glad the seniors are gone but I wish they were still here to suffer school like the rest of us.

The seniors are preparing their swan songs as the year winds to an end, and some students seem to be upset by the thought of their absence. However, I do not mind because this congested school will clear up a bit for the remainder of the year. From the seniors exit, the classrooms will get quieter so studying for finals will be easier, and tables around eagle avenue will have spare seating too. Though I will miss the seniors I’ve become friends with, these last few weeks will be a good transition time to prepare for the upcoming year without our upperclassmen. I am excited to watch the changeover from all class levels with the seniors leaving, and for next year as the incoming freshman prepare for the next four years of their lives. The shift will be bittersweet, but it will be a good closer to the 2013-14 school year.

Seniors leaving two weeks early is just plain terrible. Not only does it cause a problem for teachers in their planning, but it creates more work for underclassmen. Underclassmen are essentially taking two finals at the end of the year in each class. What is this? When the seniors leave, the school feels empty, this leaves students even more eager for the end of the year. I know several kids who have only three people left in some of their classes and from what I hear, it is not always pleasant. The last two weeks will also be a morose time for many periods. Many long friendships will be drawn to an end as seniors go on to the next phase in their lives. Some of my friends’ best friends were seniors and they will have to find time outside of school to hangout. Overall, the seniors’ early departure just seems pointless and counterproductive. I would not mind if they kept it for one more year though.

Opinion

{The X Gene } Written by: Becca Saffier

23

I

have a nerdy confession to make. Consider it my end-of-the-year gift to you: I used to love the X-Men. No lie. I do not know where it came from, but around the age of 12 or 13, I decided they were the coolest superhero group ever. The iffy movie trilogy and the so-so 90s TV series became my basis for entertainment, and though I never went as far as devoting myself to the comic books (thank God), I did manage to get my best friend in on the outdated obsession, and together we drew our own comics, featuring our very own fan-fic characters. I dressed up as Rogue for Halloween— twice—and had an innocent character crush on Nightcrawler from X-Men: Evolution. (Nightcrawler, of all people! Google him. He is not a looker.) Why do I fess up to all of this? Because in retrospect, I can look back and laugh. Sure, it was geeky. But heck, we were all geeky at some point, so why not look back at ourselves and laugh about it? I challenge you to find anyone among you who did not, at some point, have a quirk they now consider nerdy. Our quirks define us. We are kind of like mutants in that respect, trying to fit in, to be normal. The secret is that there is no normal. Normal varies depending on who you are. So why be ashamed? We are all nerds anyway. And to tell you the truth, I still like the X-Men.

T

here is no escaping the need to be thin. It is all over social media and everywhere I look. Getting the best “summer body” is the topic of discussion no matter whom I’m talking to. A combination of genetics and lifestyle choices determine your body type and I have always struggled with wanting to be one of those naturally skinny girls. It has taken me till recently to finally accept the cards I was dealt and start acting upon my desire for a different body. I started playing soccer for a fun activity to keep me busy and force me into working out everyday, since I struggled with motivation too, and I really think it helped. Though after a week or so, I unexpectedly was no longer going to practices for the exercise, I was going because I loved the sport and the many friends I made. Initially, the only goals I planned on accomplishing were weight related and I did not care about winning or even being good at soccer at all. In the end, I was actually making real goals and trying every position on the field that I could. I enjoyed myself so much more than I could have ever imagined, I stopped paying attention to my weight and it just came off easily. Along with exercise though comes eating healthy; I have not bought a school lunch since February and there is a noticeable difference in my mood and energy level every afternoon when I have not just indulged in two slices of pepperoni pizza and a bag of Doritos. I have also swapped out my annual trip to the pantry everyday after school for a two-mile jog. Not only has this kept me out of the Chips Ahoy cookie box (my weakness), it has also improved my energy level after an exhausting day at school. I feel refreshed, confident and productive, which is vital during the EOC and finals weeks. After countless shin splints, so many soccer practices, a lot of sweat and 10 pounds later, I am feeling more confident than I ever anticipated. Although I’m not at my ideal weight yet, I have all the motivation in the world to keep going and I advise everyone else to start acting upon their goals as well, because although they can be difficult, they are well worth it.

{Stuck In The Middle} Written by: Hannah Richardson

In

the anatomy of a typical sandwich, I would be the lunchmeat; my life consists of me, tossed in-between two siblings. Along with the preparation of a sandwich comes a mess waiting to happen, but the end result tends to be quite delicious. I always assumed I would be left in the dust when my mom decided to pop out yet another child. This assumption led to many years of making sure I would never be unseen. The solution: temper tantrums, and plenty of them. I mastered the task with flying colors, most likely leaving my parents questioning their decision to have children at all. How they managed to keep their sanity all of those years, I still have yet to understand. Being the middle child is anything but desirable, yet there are some things that are simply out of my control. I spent too much time dreading the situation, and not enough looking at the benefits. It was not until I got out of that childish stage of my life when I realized just how easy I had it. I would never have to be the first one to try something new; I never had to go in blind. Also, I had a little brother I could forever pick on (which I may take advantage of from time to time). I have two siblings who I now realize I could never live without. My lifelong dream of being an only child has disappeared. Having to juggle both parents alone? No thank you.

B

y now even the most average of sports fans is aware of the Michael Sam controversy. The first ever openly gay player was recently drafted in the 7th round by the St. Louis Rams. The defensive end out of Missouri has received praise and criticism alike for the way he has handled the situation. Many critics have pointed to the kiss he and his boyfriend shared on draft day, and point out that ESPN is a sports network, not a place of “sexual undertones”. Quite frankly, I think this is childish. Regardless if you agree with homosexuality or not, it is simply not anyone’s business what he does on the biggest day of his life in his own home. If Michael Sam’s boyfriend were a girl, nobody would have batted an eye. If Johnny Manziel had two girls on his arms, and kissed both of them, he would have been applauded. People use the argument that if you turn on a sports network, you expect to get sports. When I turn on Sports Center, I expect to get LeBron James, Tim Tebow, basically anything but sports. This was not the first kiss ESPN has shown and it certainly will not be the last. I have heard arguments that they were watching with children, and they should not have to be subjected to such heinous activity. It is my opinion that things like this happen in the real world, and there is no point in shielding them from everyday stuff they will have to deal with. If anything, it is the perfect teaching opportunity to educate your children. However, I do not think that Michael Sam needs to be endlessly praised. There are people way more deserving of the national attention Sam has received. People need to stop judging him based off of his sexuality and start focusing on him as a football player. I quite frankly do not think he will be a successful starter in the NFL, due primarily due to his lack of size and speed. In the end, I believe what he does in his free time is his business, but the national media Written by: Dylan Morgan parade needs to stop, and be focused elsewhere.

{ Staff Editorial Q: How much is not enough?} {S}tepping outside on a warm day to see what looks like a bunch of girls from America’s Next Top Model is not how

we should be spending our summer. Crop tops and bandeaus are “in”, along with the presentation of way too much skin. These items have become the norm for a typical day of walking with the family or going out with friends. Too many teens are so focused on the how they are perceived, and not focused at all on how they are presenting themselves. No longer are girls walking out in simply a tee and Bermuda shorts. Although styles are obviously changing, there is a point where you are crossing the line with your wardrobe (or lack of, that is). Unless you are about to hit the pool with your friends, some clothes would be nice to see. Simply finding a piece of clothing that covers at least part of the torso is not too hard to find. Girls are able to express themselves without buying clothes that make their parents cringe. Although these clothes may be comfy and “what all of the cool people are wearing”, there is a time and a place. This time and this place is not at school- or at the park with innocent little children. Save it for a night out with your girls.

{

I think you should be able to dress the way you want. If your mom lets you walk out of the house dressed however you want, then it shouldn’t matter what anybody else has to say about it.

I don’t like when girls wear provocative clothing because it looks like they are trying to degrade themselves and get more attention from guys. Dress however you want but be classy about it.

Sport: Track & Field Year: Sophomore

Jennifer LeHew is a sophomore on the girls track and field team. This is her first year on the team and has been a great asset. LeHew is a competitive pole vaulter and has recieved many medals in the event. She also broke the pole vault record and holds that record today. “I keep pushing myself to beat my own record. I’m never statisfied and I know I can always do better. I’m working on getting better everyday,” LeHew said.

Sport: Tennis Year: Junior Robert Trout is a junior on the boys tennis team. He has been apart of a team that is working hard to improve from last year. “We are playing against Liberty in the district championships and other than that the rest of our season has went pretty well. Our record is 14-2 right now, and we’re hoping to keep improving that,” Trout said.

Pressure Sports Column by: Shelby Prather

s the school year comes to a close, most spring sports are reaching the climax of their seasons. When it comes to the post season of any sport the nerves are bound to set in, and with nerves comes pressure. It is something we all deal with on a daily basis, pressure to do well on a test, pressure to be the best, or just pressure to succeed, and athletes know that feeling of pressure better than anyone. The pressure first starts to set in when people start trying to predict the outcome of games, or meets. When I hear other people’s expectations I know that is what I have to live up to. I have stood in the batters box with a 3-2 count and the bases loaded, I have been at the free throw line with 2 seconds left on the clock, and still one thing I’ve learned is that you will never understand true pressure until you step up to the starting line at a track meet, there is no better or worse feeling in the world. It feels like you are going to throw up and die from anticipation all at one time. The three seconds between when the starter holds up his hand, says, “get set” and when the gun goes off is a feeling of pressure like no other. When the race ends everyone will know if you have succeeded and met the expectations or suffered defeat. This is my personal opinion on types of pressure, but no matter what sport or activity you participate in there is only two ways to deal with pressure. The first, you can let the pressure define you. You can let the stress and expectations eat you alive. Or, you can thrive off of the pressure, let it motivate you to accomplish greatness. May 2014

The baseball team’s expectations for the post season

{B}

aseball season is in full swing and the Eagles Baseball team is more than halfway through a successful season. The team has a winning record, with only 4 losses on the season. “The season is going pretty well, we only have a handful of games left before the post season starts. We have to keep our heads down and go as hard as we can for the rest of the season because we want to make a statement this year,” junior Blake Moore said. The team has had high expectations this year due to their experienced team. With eight seniors on the team there is a great level of leadership. The eight seniors have grown through the organization from freshman to seniors so they have a great amount of experience. “With the big senior class we have we are expected to make a run at state, and so far we have done a pretty good job of that. We’re doing a good job of playing as a team, and we are getting good results from that,” junior Brady Kaplan said. The baseball program has been growing and improving for the past couple of years. The players and fans are more than excited to see what the team can do in the remaining games of the season.

“Our expectations are the same as all the other top teams in the state, we want to go all the way. We just have to hit, stay fundamentally sound, and play baseball and we should be able to get the job done,” Moore said. Clinching a conference title, and ranked number one in the state, the Eagles have had an incredibly successful season. The team is hoping to keep going strong through the state tournament and make a statement in the post season.

Reactions to the upcoming Liberty North - Liberty rivalry Written by and Photos by Sarah Philpot

Liberty and Liberty North will be in the same division for athletics in the coming 2014-2015 school year. LHS and LNHS have always been Crosstown rivals and occasionally played each other in certain sports, but now with them being in the same division, they will be playing each other in football and basketball, along with many others. “I think that Liberty and Liberty North being rivals is a good thing and a bad thing because it’s a good thing that we have some kind of competition between the schools and it’s a bad thing because people get too overly competitive and get into things like twitter fights and drama that’s not needed,” sophomore basketball and football player Michael Hughes said. The new competition is adding on the rivalry that has long been it place. “It’s been something the community and fans have long been waiting for. We have great respect for the caliber of program they have and are excited to compete with LHS and all the other Class 5 schools,” Liberty North Basketball Coach Chris McCabe said. The tension between schools will be high at sporting events and conflict may arise between athletes. “I will talk with the athletes and talk about how great it is to play friends and be friends after the game. There are many families that are friends from both schools and this will play a big part in these games as well.” Liberty North Athletic Director Robert Kernell said. The tension between schools brings on competition and pressure. “You feel a lot of pressure when playing Liberty. You always want to win but especially against your rival school,” sophomore soccer player Summer Blankenship said.

The Liberty United Rugby boy and girls team have always been combined, Liberty and Liberty North. Next year the team is spitting and they will be rivals like all other sports. “I think the split might spark more competitiveness which would be good to make the liberty district strong in another area of academics and sports,” Liberty Junior rugby player and football player Chase Chapman. “Every season presents new challenges and we will also challenge our team to perform at its highest level possible,” McCabe said.

“Playing Liberty is great competition, so many people come to watch when we play. It’s cool becasue baseball is the first sport to play Liberty and it creates a different atmosphere when we play,” junior Blake Moore said. May 2014
