here is something to be said about a community all fired up over the same thing. When any group of people is likeminded toward a common goal or interest, whether it is a sport, a project, or a publication, it unleashes a whole new level of success and passion, often affecting those around them. A prime example, as every self-respecting Kansas Citizan is aware, is the Royals post season success. I am not a big baseball fan, yet I am pumped up about the Royals simply because my city is. There is something to be said about a sport team’s success being linked to the support of their fans. When everybody is excited together, that energy is contagious. It is an exciting phenomenon. This month, I think the whole community mentality inadvertently influenced the newspaper. In this issue, you will find a tribute to the Royals postseason, a spotlight on the success of the girls’ softball team, a first-hand look at our marching band, and behind-the-scenes coverage of what it takes to put on a play. In order for any of these to be awesome (which they are), the people involved must have the same goal in mind. It is not nerdy or taboo; it is what makes any endeavor a successful one. It does not always start out that way, but in order for it to get there, everyone has to have the right mindset. Everyone has to believe it will work, no matter the obstacles.

- In what way would you describe the clothes you’re designing?

league soccer players trying to get into entrepreneurship?

A

A- I’m showing that it takes a lot of time, and America is not as closed minded as Europe, and as long as you give everything you can into soccer, you can put a lot into work outside of soccer. So yeah, maybe I can be that kind of model for anyone that wants to do anything outside of soccer and I’m sure a lot of people have been doing other things than soccer so I’m just showing that its possible.

- I would say, simple, an adapting of the Kansas City style. A touch of Paris, and a little touch of KC. Q- What really inspired you to put your hand into creating clothing? A- I’ve loved clothes since I was very young. I grew up in Paris and even if I was wearing regular clothes, not expensive clothes, I would work all the details to look the best I can, and then step-by-step, as I became a soccer player, I got into fashion. And here I am right now having a lot to learn and a lot to do. Q- What is your preferred target audience for your clothing?

Q- And do ideas of clothing designs just “ I would hit you at random, or do you really say, simple, an have to sit down and think about them? adapting of the Kansas City style. A A- Sometimes it comes like to a touch of Paris, and painter, sometimes you get one, sometimes you don’t, sometimes I a little touch of think about it, I go to a lot of fashion shows, I follow fashion and everything, KC.” you know. And I can get inspiration from

A- Well, we make custom suits, so we make our suits for those who wear suits, so most the people in America, so the target would be for people between 20 and 45, and would like to wear slim cut, and look good in a suit and not be about being comfortable, more being ok with wearing a suit and looking good. Because when people buy suits they look for big pants, big jackets, and don’t care that much towards looking good. Q- Do you think your brand will help other major

anything.

Q- What moment did you think that this whole brand was going to work, at what step of the process did you really have faith, like, you felt that this will succeed? A- This isn’t any walk yet, you know? We’re growing every day, but still soccer is my life, because it’s something that I like. So I’m growing every day and I wont know where I’ll be, I’m very focused on soccer. We’ve been working the store, and doing good right now and just see for tomorrow.

halloween party house

Some tricks to throwing the best Halloween party Story by Brandon Ditsch and Gabby Smith | Photos by Hailey Wasser | Design by Baileigh Arant all is finally here and it is about time to figure out what kinds of easy Halloween decorations need to be pulled out for a great party. “I would recommend buying the spider web pull-apart cotton. It makes an awesome Halloween decoration for whatever theme, and it is super cheap and easy to set up. Pinterest would be a great place to find clever ideas for costumes. If one were wanting to do some cool makeup for Halloween, YouTube has a ton of Halloween makeup tutorials,” junior McKenzie Frisch said. Halloween parties are centered around the great costumes everybody wears. Everybody gets to show another side of themselves for one special night every year. “Instead of having a themed party, I would want my guests to come in whatever they want to show their personality and creativity,” junior Rodney Hinton said. People make a big deal of what to wear to a party. Sometimes it is easier just to go in whatever feels comfortable.

“I always felt like making the costume is easier because I never had enough money to just go out and buy a new costume every year. So the few times that I did buy one, I would end up tweaking it every year to make it different,” senior Jacey Bruns said. A priority for a Halloween party, or any party for that matter, is food. Halloween is a very festive holiday that allows someone to get creative and make things to show off their spirit. “I’ve always loved Halloween themed candy and sugar cookies, I would love to see those at a Halloween party,” sophomore Whitney Wilson said. From Frankenstein cupcakes to fruit punch disguised as a gory drink, there are plenty of awesome and unique themed food ideas out there to make your party a little more festive. “All the themed foods and drinks are cool cause you can’t do that at every party. It’s nice to have a change of pace and experience something different,” sophomore Anthony Triano said.

Behind the

scenes: Setting the Stage

Story by: MacKenzie McNeil | Design by: Alex Kampman | Photos by: Hailey Wasser ights, camera… stagecraft? Yes, stagecraft. Stagecraft is a class that sets the stage for school productions such as the musicals and plays. The students in this class build sets, work with lights, and much more. The kids in stagecraft have put everything the audience sees- and things they don’t- together. Every student gets put into a group, and the group then works on whatever project they were assigned to. The time it takes to build each project can vary. Smaller projects can take a day or two, while larger projects can take up to a whole week. These projects include building sets, doing lights and audio, and checking to make sure everything is sound before the performance. The class’ most recent project was the school play And Then They Came for Me: Remembering the World of Anne Frank. The play had a very intricate set, and students had to put their full effort into it. “We did a lot of set building and painting. We built the pillars, the steps, and the platforms,” Sophomore Losha Johnson said. Stagecraft is one of the reason the performances go so smoothly. Along with building, they work with lights, audio, and set organization. “We clean and organize behind the scenes so the play goes smoothly,” Johnson said.

L

The students in stagecraft began working on everything around the second week of school. Every day up until the play, they worked diligently to make sure the set and lights are in proper condition and safe for the actors. This set was different than most sets they’ve built. This play had a darker tone, and the students had to accurately reenact the streets of Germany. The students made sure to pay close attention to the placements of buildings and other props to make the performance the best it can be.

“Stagecraft is important because if the set looks good the play will be better and more realistic. We all work really hard to make the set look good,” senior Gabby Barbour said.

There are probably like that many people in the pit so there are probably like 25 people,” sophomore Jonathan Anderson said. There are many different people that make up the drum line, but each one of them has there own part, which makes them so grand. “I play the tenner’s which is just six drums. Then there are four snare drums, which is a single drum with two snares attached to it. There are the five base drums. Then there are two c. The pit consists of people that play marimba, chimes, or just auxiliary percussion,” Anderson said. The drum line helps add exictment to the crowd and the student section.

Its pretty simple as long as you keep to the beat,” senior Lindsey Anderson said. The trombone section put in hours of hard work to get the rountine perfect. “We just practice early and there were minimal accidents. rum line, Trombones, clarinets, trumpets, Sousaphones, saxophones, flutes, drum majors, French Horns, Baritones, and color guard all make up the Liberty North Screaming Eagle Marching Band!. “I love the band because all the kids that are in it. We all get along and are pretty chill group,” Senior Stephanie Boan said The band appears to be one big happy family that work, practice, and perform together. “I loved performing for parade marching as much as field show. But either way, it is fun to perform,’ Boan said Another huge part of the band is the color guard. “I love it. Color Guard is basically twirling flags with dancing,” Junior Lillian Albert said. As well as being with the band, Color Guard have their own competitions.

D

“I love Winter Guard; it’s my favorite. It is a competition with more dancing and it’s way more competitive,” Lillian said To some, the best part about the band is something that their teacher Shane Fuller always tells them. “With the Band there is no varsity, Jv, everyone is out there, and everyone is performing. There is no bench; everyone is up there, so were only as good as our worst player,” senior Lindsey Anderson said

“The band is really good at getting the student section pumped up for the second half of the football game,” senior Alberta Engelman said.

Story by: Kelsey Runge | Designed by: Kala Hughes Photo by: Keara O’Brien chool can often involve challenges that take up most of students’ free time. For junior Romero Higareda, life is full of school, theater, and chamber choir. These activities can keep him busy from 7:30 am to 7 pm. Balancing school and extracurricular activities can be challenging, but Higareda manages to balance acting, singing, and studying. As a sophomore, Higareda was in many plays and musicals. He played a lost boy in Peter Pan, Mac in Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends, and Officer O’Harra in Arsenic and Old Lace. He is also very involved in the technical aspect of theater, working with the sound and lights. “It’s oneof those things where I’m able to have fun by working my hardest. You need to put your all into it. Nothing gets done if you don’t. I love being able to put my all into theater,” Higareda said. Along with theater, Higareda is also a member of the chamber choir. Rehearsals keep him busy for most of the time before and after school. He has been a role model for sophomore James Sisson, who is also a member of the choir. “He’s helped me through numerous personal problems and issues. Between his school work and productions, he works non stop. If you ask him to get something done, you can bet he will do it that night. He’s extremely easy to collaborate with and is willing to teach someone a skill if they don’t know it,” Sisson said. School can be challenging enough without other activities on top of it, but Higareda still finds a way to accomplish his tasks while maintaing a positive attitude the whole time. “Romero is a very friendly and highly energetic young man. He is extremely active in both theater and choir and still does very well at his school work,” senior Seth Stein said. Higareda’s work ethic and personality have impacted his fellow students. During long rehearsals, staying positive can be a challenge. His outlook on life is positive and that really shows when you talk to him. I work with him in theatre and his optimism is really refreshing during long rehearsals,” Senior Hannah Milks said.

hen pursing a lifelong job, some lucky souls know what is right for them from the start and fall in love with their career. However, for others, it often takes trial and error and some searching to find a career they are passionate and excited about. For Communication Arts teacher Kimberly Brownlee, her journey to teaching was discovered on a windy road that started in a different direction. “I actually went to the 6-year Medical program at UMKC first. I was going to be a pediatrician. Then I realized that the problems so many of those children had were at home, and there was no changing that. So I wanted to go into a profession where I could truly help kids, and adolescents are the perfect age. They are on the cusp of adulthood- so much is changing and they are at the perfect place in their lives to truly begin to establish the kinds of persons they will be as adults,” Brownlee said. Besides following her passions regarding her career, one major component of Brownlee’s life is her faith; it is a driving force and has great importance in her everyday life. “My faith is paramount. I strive to live by my own version idea of Namaste - that we are all spiritually equal, one person as valuable as the next - and, but for the grace of God, anyone else’s misfortune could be my own, therefore it is my responsibility to help my fellow man as much as I can,” Brownlee said. Being a spiritual person, Brownlee brings energy and zeal into her classroom, and her desire to help students with their work has made a positive difference by leading her students in the right direction. “I like how she makes a connection with her students and genuinely cares about them. She is strict with grading, but it only strengthens your skills in the long run. I’m very grateful I have her as a teacher again this year,” junior Mckenzie Harlan said.

The Science Behind

insomnia

A deeper view on the scientific facts over how sleep can affect you and how you can get improve your sleep Story by Madelyn Seley and Frank Anthony | Design by Keara O’Brien

oday teens often find themselves having a hard time getting a good night sleep. “There are many reasons teens lose sleep they may not have a good sleep schedule or maybe to much stress,” psychology teacher Doug Davis said. One-reason teens do not get good sleep is because they do not have a regular sleep schedule. Having a sleep schedule means you go to bed and wake up at the same time everyday. Stress and caffeine are also reasons people cannot sleep. “I always try to get to sleep around the same time so I can be ready for school,” sophomore JD Hunter said. Little sleep can affect students grades in a negative way. When students do not get a good night sleep they lose the ability

T

to focus in class and this can cause their grades to drop. “Kids need to practice good sleep hygiene and then they will be able to get good sleep,” social studies teacher Lindsey Plaster. It is a good idea to practice good sleep hygiene, which means you only use your bed for sleep not sitting on the computer playing games or anything else. Going to sleep is at the same time is also good hygiene. You should also stay away from caffeine. “I understand that in this generation its can be hard to get good sleep because of every ones busy schedule and all the afterschool activities kids have,” phycology teacher Davis said.

Need Those

ZZZ’s

Students express their dissatisfaction with the amount of sleep they get each night. Story by Madelyn Seley and Frank Anthony | Design by Keara O’Brien leep: the only time teens get to fully relax after a day filled with school, extracurricular activities and a lot of homework. What is interesting is that those three things that make students most tired, are the main reasons Liberty North students are deprived of sleep. “I think school is definitely every reason why I don’t get enough sleep just because I over commit myself to activities and have to stay up late to get my homework done,”senior Katherine Herrick said. The struggle to balance sports, school, and a social life is often times an issue some students do not have to deal with. “Sometimes I stay up just because I can’t fall asleep but like I always finish my homework during Eagle Hour. When I can’t sleep, it’s usually because I’m not tired or if there’s a storm that keeps me up,” freshman Hannah Simon said. Time management can make or break a busy student and can often be the decider if the student gets five hours of sleep or eight. In a survey of 510 Liberty North students, 50% said they only get 4-6 hours of sleep a night, while 38% said they get 7-8 hours a night. That is half of Liberty North students who are getting less than 8 hours of sleep. “The amount of sleep I get depends on the night. I am always at school for a really long time because I participate in a lot of activities so

S

18

October 2014 | eaglesviewonline.com

I feel like I’m always here or always coming early and then I have to stay up late to do my homework so most of the time I think I get a pretty good amount of sleep. But definitely not like the 8 hours you’re supposed to get,” Herrick said. Extracurricular activities and the amount of hours dedicated to those activities definitely impact how many hours of sleep a student gets. Another reason many students are sleep-deprived, is just because they can not fall asleep. “I go to sleep at like 9:30-10ish every night and I wake up energized. Whenever I can’t sleep, I usually just close my eyes and don’t move for like ten minutes,” Simon said. Having a set time to go to sleep every night could make many students’ lives easier. Liberty North students use a variety of methods when they cannot fall asleep. Some students get on their phones for a few hours. The amount of sleep students get really all boils down to the amount of homework, sports and other stressfilled activities a student juggles, and how they manage their time. “I think if I was more committed to getting my homework done during school, just when I have random extra free time, then I wouldn’t have to stay up as late at night to try and finish it,” Herrick said.

movie review: dracula untold

Review by Isaac Keller | Design by Taylor Thompson or the small price of $8.50, you can have the action packed thrill of a lifetime and go see the “real” story of “Dracula Untold”, the human transformed into a monster. This movie will keep you on the edge of your seat and your heart racing until the very end. The movie “Dracula Untold” begins by introducing the audience to Vlad the Impaler, soon to be the legendary “Dracula”. The movie takes place in the Romanian time period, specifically during the Turkish invasions. Because of these invasions, Vlad is forced to go to extreme measures because “Men don’t fear swords, they fear monsters”. As Vlad discovers the insane potential of this new dark power he must experience the weaknesses as well. As the movie progresses the audience gets to see how Dracula was not only created, but what he was forced to go through. Actor, Luke Evans (Dracula), did an excellent job of portraying the monster that the audience is meant to see. Toward the end of the movie, he kills hundreds of thousands, showing the “Son of the Devil” side of himself. As his son stated, “The heart is much greater than the soul,” as Dracula is later reborn after the death of all the vampires he had created. This movie was a great portrayal of today’s traditional vampire everyone is so scared of. It us unrealistic to think that you cannot enjoy this movie based off the constant action and excitement that will leave you biting your fingernails. Every scene included a new situation to leave you in utter suspense. This movie is exactly what I would recommend for a group of friends looking for a good thrill and a great night.

book review: every day I

by David Levithan

Review by Michaela Jordan | Design by Taylor Thompson magine never knowing what living a true life is; having to live a different life everyday, getting to know people then never seeing them again, getting close with someone, then leaving them forever? The main character of Every Day is a person of indeterminate gender, looks and even name, who wakes up in a different body every single day. ‘A’, as s/he calls him/herself, has been like this since birth. Every morning, ‘A’ has to check whether the body currently inhabited is male or female, check the location and then try to make it through the day without drawing notice and without getting the current host into trouble. David Levithan is an amazing author, making the fictional story line itself very

unique, yet thought-provoking. It makes me think; the things we take for granted, like family and friends, people that know us. ‘A’ has none of that. There are glimpses of it with every body he inhabits, but the next day, those families and friends are gone again, replaced with a whole new set. I had a hate/love relationship with this book. Along with every sentence I read, I had thousands of questions and thoughts roam my head. Every chapter overwhelmed my mind with sadness, then happiness, and a cluster of other feelings. This book is an amazing book to spark thoughts and discussion, or a book for an everyday read.

I have 7 people in my family, with 5 kids. I had coupons, which is why we could afford to go because it gets kind of pricey for a family,” Social Studies teacher David Mayne said. The Liberty Corn Maze is off 291 highway heading towards Independence and it is open from 10 am to 7 pm everyday from September 20 until October 31. Outdoor activities are more enjoyable when prepared for the weather. “I really didn’t like that it was muddy and cold because of the rain,” junior Addie Paulson said. They had mini mazes, they had the big maze, and they also had fossils and animals.” Mayne said. Some Liberty North students recently visited the corn maze. “I liked the design for the Corn maze this year. I went with a small group and it was a lot of fun,” Paulson said. Walking into a new environment can be a good change in atmosphere for people. “It was a pretty friendly environment. There weren’t a lot of staff members around, but if you needed to find someone you could look around if you had a question. There were lots of families, lots of groups and everyone was having fun! I thought it was pretty good” Mayne said.

The corn crib is similar to a corn kernel sand pit. Children like trying to walk through it but being unable to, some also try to make corn kernel castles. “The Maze seems really fun, but I really want to go any jump on the jumbo jumper, that has always been my favorite,” senior Valencia Holle said.

“It’s just kind of gross; it’s more of a horror movie. I don’t really like horror movies to begin with, but this one is just dumb. It isn’t even scary. Some parts are freaky, but not enough to classify it as a true horror movie,” junior Aoife Choice said.

The Cave

“I don’t like the movie The Cave because it’s too dramatic and makes events seem fake and not realistic enough to believe. It doesn’t really have a plot either,” sophomore Holly Haines said.

or all of you Grinches out there, it may be to your advantage to stop reading this right now, for I will be spending every last word talking about a holiday that is very true to my heart- Christmas. I know Christmas has yet to arrive, but I must state my eternal love for this holiday. For some, Christmas is about presents, and for others, it is simply just another “dumb” holiday. But for me, it is my life. My preparations for Christmas never do stop. I have my room decked out all year long with colorful Christmas lights galore. Why do this? To remind me of a holiday worth talking about- or in my case, worth writing a 300 word column about. My heart is especially happy this time of the year. Simply just being around family and friends, laughing and chatting about life, is enough to calm my spirits. Then, Charlie Brown Christmas comes on TV, and I find myself nearly in tears because of the joy Charlie’s perfectly round face brings to me. In these moments, I find it fairly difficult to understand how anyone could have anything against this beautiful holiday. I mean, it is, but of course, “the most wonderful time of the year”. My cookie making hands are warmed up, and my falala’s are tuned up. So let us not simply think of October as a time to carve pumpkins and pick out scandalous halloween costumes. We have less than three months to go, people, and I guarantee most of you do not have your halls decked with boughs of holly. Shame on you.

f you have been living under a college football rock, I will catch you up to speed. Arguably the best college running back, maybe even player in America was suspended indefinitely. Todd Gurley of the University of Georgia allegedly accepted a sum of $400 for 50 autographs from a memorabilia dealer who we now know as Bryan Allen. This would be in direct violation of NCAA rules stating that players are not to receive improper benefits that would compromise amateur status. The NCAA amateurism rule is archaic, ridiculous, and probably on the verge of expulsion. The primary argument for the NCAA amateur model is “student athletes receive a full scholarship to attend that school, that should be compensation enough.” However, a “full scholarship”, doesn’t pay for everything. Buying gifts, going to a concert, even eating out becomes near impossible for a lot of these students (thus comes the stealing of crab legs). And unlike other students on academic scholarship, student athletes are not allowed to pick up a part time job. That does not keep these student athletes from practicing an estimated 40 hours a week on top of schoolwork. As people start to catch on to the ridiculousness of the NCAA amateurism rule, I believe the end is near. As can be seen with the O’Bannon case, it is only a matter of time before college athletes start to fight for what they deserve. Todd Gurley should not be blamed for something he is simply a victim of . eaglesviewonline.com | October 2014

liding into ones DMs is a risky, yet rewarding and necessary tactic to try to win over a girls heart. Girls love romantic gestures. You could be lazy and cliché and buy a girl flowers, or you could decide to try something new that will show a girl you are willing to go that extra mile. It is pretty well known that I know everything there is to know about women and I kind of kill it with them. Nothing excites the ladies more than when they see that blue bar flash across the bottom of their screen saying they have a new message from someone. It is like a kid seeing Santa on Christmas. So as soon as you press send on that first DM you are already half way through the door. To seal the deal it is important to show interest, so be sure to let the girl you are wooing know you are not messing around. If you will not take my word for it, look at all of the couples walking around our school. Many of those couples started by a simple direct message. Keep it classy Liberty North, and keep sliding into those DMs.

ith it being a Twitter phenomenon and the subject of countless pictures, subtweets and jokes, sliding into the DMs might be as serious as you could get. “Sliding into someone’s DMs” is: when someone thinks a guy or girl is cute on Twitter, they will direct message them, and more or less flirt over these messages. This concept is either normal or nerve wracking for either party. For both guys and girls alike, it is always exciting to get someone to notice you. However, considering the person’s feelings that actually took the time to DM you is something I especially try to do. The way I see it, if they took the chance and tried to put themselves out there, the least you should to do is respond to them, even if it is just to say you are not interested. From a girl’s perspective, my advice would be, do not be afraid to make the first move and DM someone either. Get with the program and message that girl or guy on Twitter that you have had a crush on for forever. It certainly could not hurt.

enior year has finally commenced and time feels like it could not be moving faster. Although it has not been as stressful as I imagined, it has been a bit overwhelming. I have known all along that grades and my ACT score matter, but the importance of them did not sink in till this year began. From deciding how many colleges to apply to and where and then the final decision weighing on my shoulders, I have had many things on my mind. Along with this entire decision to make, I have had to manage my schoolwork, friends and sports. There are so many technicalities to finishing a high school career, I feel like there is hardly time to breathe. I wish we could pause and slow things down and enjoy all of our lasts. Like our last football game or dance or just simply the last time being in the same place as all the kids we grew up with. I wish I could set aside all of the homework and college applications, and focus on the close friends and relationships I have made in the past four years and all the people and memories I love and will never forget.

staff editorial:sleep

verall, the Liberty North newspaper staff agrees that teenagers are not getting enough sleep. Between all of our hectic schedules with practices for sports and the arts, the multiple clubs we are in to maintain our “well-rounded” status and not to forget the hours of homework piled on us each night, sleep is extremely desired and yet pushed behind the multiple tasks to be accomplished. On average, 50% of Liberty North students are getting 4-6 hours of sleep instead of the recommended 8 hours, according to a survey done by Eagle’s View. It makes sense to think that the number of hours we spend learning in school is the minimal number of hours of sleep we should get for our brain process and sort through the information we have learned that day. However, with the amount of homework each teacher gives students nightly along with the “high school experience” one can only try to make time for, sleep is put behind (almost) everything else. Staff and students should take into consideration the different activities we are all involved in, on top of the nightly workload. It is a joint effort to improve the amount of sleep students are getting. For example, students could cut back on just a few of the activities we’re involved in. Staff could cut back on the amount of homework per night. If we take more time for sleep, we will have more energy for the countless obligations we are expected to complete. The Liberty North newspaper staff feels that we would all benefit from more sleep, considering teenagers are not getting the right amount as it is.

CAN'T STOP,

WON’TSTOP A recap of the softball team’s successful season Story by Catherine Hemmenway | Photos by Olivia Prather | Design by Shelby Prather olding a 28-4 record, the Liberty North girls’ softball team is reflecting on the highlights of the successful season. Giving up 3 games to Lee’s Summit West, Staley, and Pleasant Hill have been the only lowlights of the season. However, these are covered up with the many accomplishments that followed. “We have won the Battle Tournament, the September Smash, Districts, and we won Conference,” sophomore Destiny Ojigoh said. The tournaments make up a large section of the softball season. “For our first tournament, we had lost one game and were pretty down, however, we came back and fought in the next game to win,” junior Leah Thorne said. The ability to pull off wins in tournaments is rewarding for the athletes. “Every tournament win feels amazing because for each tournament we want to come back home with a trophy. We go into the tournaments focused and ready to play in hopes of pulling off a huge win,” Ojigoh. Another one of the season highlights was that North’s softball team had their first home run in history due to Ojigoh. “In the moment I had a lot of adrenaline going on because it was in our Conference Championship

H

game, which is a really big game for us and I was kind of nervous going out to bat since it was 3 and 2 and I really didn’t want to get out. But I finally came together and got a good hit,” Ojigoh said. With a team effort come individual recognition as well. “I was partially surprised yet partially not because, yes, Destiny is a really good hitter but it truly was like dang girl,” Thorne said. Recently, the girls pulled off a huge win at Districts. The game was played against Liberty to see who would advance even further in their season. “Before the district game, Liberty had Kearney beat 14-2 which made me worry,” Daughtery said, “but as the game started, my nerves settled down. It was just a fun game.” “Districts was a lot of fun, we have been wanting to beat Liberty, so it was a really big game for us,” Thorne said. The team beat Liberty 4-2 to become the District Champions. “We are always looking forward to winning more,” sophomore Shea Prather said. The team moved on to sectionals and defeated Park Hill South 6-2 before losing to Lee’s Summit North in quarterfinals..

blue october Follow the Royals through their post season run

ometimes all it takes to wake up is a punch in the mouth. On July 21, following a sweep at the hands of the woeful Boston Red Sox, the Royals got that punch in the mouth as they were 48-50 and fans were struggling to keep a belief in the team. “I felt like the Royals had no chance of bouncing back from that since they played one of the worst teams in the league and they couldn’t beat them. It looked like another disappointment team, and another firing of a manager,” senior Josh Heuertz said. Despite their start, the Royals went on to have the best record in the second half, clinching their first playoff birth in 29 years. “Man that second half was fun to watch. It seemed like every night they were finding a new and incredible way to win. I’ve never had more fun watching a baseball team.” Senior Joey Malm Said. After an improbable run to the playoffs, it seemed like nothing could stop these Royals. Perhaps not even a 7-3 deficit in the wild card game. “Words can not describe it. You

think the game is over when they’re down 7-3 and then they tie it. Then they fall behind in extra innings and you think it’s over again, yet they find a way to somehow pull that game out. It was pretty unbelievable and something this city won’t forget for quite a long time.” Senior Brady Kaplan said. As the Royals continue their pursuit of a second World Championship, some teachers at Liberty North reminisce on the last team to pull this off back in 1985. “The 1985 team had a lot of stars and well known players. This team just plays together and embodies what baseball is about. They’ve kind of become America’s team. Everyone is jumping on the bandwagon and rooting for them to win.” Broadcasting teacher Ann Bertoldie said. No matter what the Royals do from here on out, the incredible, improbable, and drama filled postseason run has given fans plenty to celebrate. Let us just hope the Royals give us more chances to party like it is 1985.
