Halloween Costumes straight from your closet
halloween costumes are easier than ever with these suggestions that come straight from the racks... of your closet Story by Grace Moore | Photos by Kenzie McNeill and Grace Moore | Design by Kendall Steinmetz
T
here is no need to go to the costume store for a costume that would only be worn for one night. The truth is there are many easy to make costumes in your very own closet that would fit a cheap budget! A cowgirl or cowboy costume would be a perfect costume for both boys and girls. “Most materials for this costume are uni-sex because both genders can wear denim, overalls, plaid, and boots to create a perfect Halloween costume. Also, most people have these items of clothing,” junior, Julia Muchow, said. There are different ways that either a boy or girl can add to their costume to make it fit their style a little bit more. “If you’re a girl then you can do stuff with your hair such as braids and cute cowgirl boots. If you are a boy then you can add things like a boyish hat or even a big belt. Even if you don’t have boots or a hat to complete the cowboy/cowgirl look, it will still fit the theme, and it is all reasonably priced for both genders,” Muchow said. For some, dressing up is the best part of any holiday, especially Halloween. It’s a time of the year where they can express themselves through costumes and have fun while doing so. A popular affordable costume idea for girls of all ages is an Indian. “I think I could easily use a knit tan shirt or a draped brown cardigan and add some cute sandals or boots,” senior, Nina Zepeda, said. The costume is just the beginning of it as well. “I would go buy feathers and a headband.

Also I would put my hair in two little braids and add some color too,” Zepeda said. Lastly, in order to complete the look that one is going for, make-up can be essential. “Probably my normal mascara and eyeliner, but I’d add on some red face paint and do little tribal looking designs on my face and arms,” Zepeda said. High school boys might have many thoughts when considering whether or not to dress up for Halloween. They might find themselves struggling to come up with costume ideas. “I think it is fun because you can dress up as funny things and then laugh at your friends which leads to a good time,” freshman, Skyler Bachman, said. Cheap ideas may seem hard to come by for boys, but in reality there are many good choices out there that one can be. For instance, an original costume one could dress up as is the book character, “Where’s Waldo”. “I would wear a red and white longsleeve shirt, a stocking cap, blue Levi jeans and glasses,” Bachman said. The costume store is not the only place to find these costumes, or even others. Many of these items could be waiting right on the hangers of a closet. There are many affordable alternatives that could potentially give one the same outcome. And even better, if someone has to go purchase certain things for these simple costumes, they could possibly even wear them after the 31st too!

TUTORIAL
Make sure your face is completely makeup-free before applying cold cream to your entire face and under chin to keep from staining skin. Add a lighter version of your skin tone to your entire face. Take a medium brush and blush baby powder across all the skin that is going to be used. Map out the sunken areas with black eyeliner, then color it in using black grease body paint (you can buy at Spirit or any Halloween store for five dollars). Set the dark areas in place with black eye shadow. Draw lines for teeth with black eyeliner around your chin. Use grey eye shadow to create a 3D effect around the black sections of the face. Create shadow around the top and bottom of the teeth to give definition. Trace your waterline with black eyeliner. Don’t forget to color around your eyes with black paint. Now define the jawline and around the outside of the face. Finally, use setting spray or setting powder! | makeup tutorial by Emily Caywood |

all. For some it can be one of the most anticipated times of the year, but what comes along with the cool weather and leafless trees? Halloween. Halloween is a great time to go trick-or-treating or just hang out with your family and friends. “What I like about Halloween is just the time of year and all the festivity in the air and the opportunity to go trick or treating. I’ve kind of grown out of that, so now it’s also just the parties,” freshman, Elijah Campbell, said. There are many opportunities that come around Halloween time, such as trick-or-treating, carving pumpkins, maybe even hanging out with your friends and having a scary movie marathon. “I’ll either go out with my sister and trick or treat and take her around or I’ll go to a friends house and we will all hang out,” junior, Nick Schoen, said. Going to see some of the haunted houses downtown may be a fun activity to do with friends leading up to Halloween night, but making a homemade haunted house is always another option for the big night. “I’ve made a few haunted

houses with friends at their houses which are always really scary and fun” Campbell said. There are also the people that would rather stay in and do something a little less scary, like handing out candy to the kids who come to their doorstep. “I hand out candy to the children and walk my sister around. I try to avoid haunted houses because I’m a wimp and a scaredy cat,” senior, Kammi Porter, said. There are two routes, the scary route or the safe route, but either way there are many alternatives for what to do on Halloween night.
“Every year around Halloween my friends and I go on walks in the forest and adventure” sophomore Claire Gibson said.

Terrifying Tales Three Students tell their real life horror stories Story by Emma Libby Design by Catherine Hemenway
W
hen gathered around in the dark this October 31st, some students will have more than just spooky fables to tell, but rather their own supernatural horror stories. Whether they are mysterious figments, noises with no explanation, etc.; no one truly knows what causes these phenomena, all we know as that they can get a little freaky. “Every night at the same exact time for about a month, I would hear a mysterious scratching noise at the roof. It just suddenly stopped after a while,” junior Emma Carter said. Hauntings in one’s house are terrifying, yet no too rare of occurrences. “One day while in the house I lived in in Wisconsin, I look up from practicing my viola and I see a little girl standing in my sister’s doorway. She stood there looking straight at me,” senior Hannah Haines said. Sometimes these supernatural occurrences can be vivid and highly realistic, making the hauntings even scarier. “The girl I saw was the color gray and looked around the ages of 6 to 8. She had an innocent look, pure white face, gray body, and black hair. She was wearing a long white dress, and looked like she was from an older time period, such as the 1800s or 1900s,” Haines said. Just like in horror movies, many different scary occurrences may happen a few times in the same location. “Another scary event was when my mom once prayed over the house when she was home alone. She prayed, ‘In the name of Jesus Christ, do you have this house?’ My mom then told me that after that, she heard a voice coming from my room that responded ‘no’,” Haines said. One can’t help but breathe a sigh of relief when leaving these haunted houses that can give anyone the chills. “It’s a really good thing that we’re out of that house now,” Haines said. It isn’t only just humans that are doing the haunting. Pets and animals are often a part of supernatural stories as well. “About three years ago, my orange cat unexpectedly passed away and we had him cremated. A few days later, I saw an orange flash of light go under my bed. We thought it looked like the cat. We kept finding it every single day for about a week,” freshman Christian Mullins said.

and finding easy cooking recipes on pinterest can cut the cost in half. Another option is having the party later at night, so all that is provided are snacks. “I have my close friends help pay for food and help me make cookies and desserts. It helps me a lot and I don’t spend all my money on food that will be gone after the night is over,” junior Jenna Fallari said. Entertainment for the Halloween can get quite expensive. This is where most people blow all their money on. An easy and cheap way to entertain the guests is by watching scary movies. Going on Netflix and looking through the horror section is fast and simple. “Netflix is life. I love the horror section and it’s super simple to turn on a scary movie for the guests,” Fallari said. To finish up the best Halloween party, have a bonfire outback. It’s a way to wrap up the party and get to talk to all the guests. “Bonfires are my favorite part of Halloween parties. You get to tell scary stories and have fun outside. This way you don’t have to pay for anything else and get to have a great time,” sophomore Mikaela Brown said.

othing screams Halloween quite like having a Halloween party. However throwing the perfect party can get expensive. “Halloween parties are a blast. The only downfall is paying for everything,” junior Emily Williamson said. Buying supplies for the party can get expensive. Pinterest is a way to make homemade decorations. Pinterest helps cut down the prices and makes party more unique and crafty. “Pinterest is my go to place. It has the best ideas for parties and super easy ways to decorate your house for Halloween,” Williamson said. Another place to get decorations is at Party City. They have cheap decorations and always have coupons available to use. Go straight for the clearance and get crafty with it. It’s a fun and easy way to decorate. “Go in, look at the clearance and you will walk away with tons of decorations for a low price,” Williamson said. Food and candy are a must for a Halloween party. “My favorite Halloween memory would have to be when my friends and I all counted out candy and whoever had the most candy got to take everyone else’s candy… I won that by the way.” “My worst Halloween experience was when I was six years old, I was walking down a driveway on a hill and then I tripped and got a huge knot on my head.” “My favorite costume was my fat suit. News Of the issue Royal Fever
A
s October goes on, the Kansas City Royals have once again found themselves in an impressive playoff run, going up against some of the toughest teams in Major League Baseball and drawing the monumental support of their local fans. However, this isn’t the first time the Royals have found themselves in this situation, as they made it into the World Series last year only to be beaten in a battle of the ages versus the San Francisco Giants in game seven. Nonetheless, the Royals are back in postseason play, showing that last year was no fluke, and the fans do not think it was either. “I think that because the Royals have gone into the postseason for two years in a row that they are becoming a better team overall,” sophomore Connor Thompson said.

ith the weather getting colder and colder each day, it is important for everyone in the community to stay warm, even if they are unable to afford the nicest clothes. In an effort to help the less fortunate, Liberty North’s Key Club hosted the first annual sock drive from October 19th through the 23rd. This sock drive helps aide those in need by supplying them with cold weather necessities. “The sock drive is a community service event, so we do it as the purpose of our club to help Liberty”, junior Katie Pohl said. By collecting socks from Liberty North’s first hour classes, Key Club hopes to make solid contributions to their cause. “Our goal was to bring in about a hundred pairs of socks for our first drive”, Pohl said.

ith the leaves changing, and the temperature slowly dropping, Halloween is creeping upon us. Scary movies, pumpkin carving, and planning Halloween costumes are typical activities, but those working at Haunt at Worlds of Fun are participating in slightly different festivities. “My favorite part about working at Haunt is probably getting to go into work every weekend and getting full hair, costume & makeup done by our staff. There’s a lot that goes on behind closed doors to get ready for each night” junior Rainen Ratto said. With many jobs, you wear your uniform and work a shift ranging from 4 hours to 8 hours, but at Worlds of Fun, this is not the norm. “I get there at 5 in the afternoon and don’t get home until 2 in the morning, it really saps the energy out of you, and you get tired and hungry as the nights goes on,” sophomore Garrett Williams said. With hundreds of people coming through the haunted houses at Worlds of Fun, breaks are rare and the work can be tiring. “The worst thing about working at Haunt is probably the fact that I don’t really get a break because there are constantly people walking through the house. We can’t leave our room empty or we will get in trouble, and sometimes we don’t even have time to get a drink or eat a snack” Ratto said. Working at Haunt may seem like an unusual job, but it does have its perks. “Not a lot of people can say they get paid to make people scream, but I do. Your house is a whole family and at Worlds of Fun, the houses are very competitive. We give an award for the best overall screamsters and the best overall house each night. It’s such a cool experience” Williams said. Scaring people as a job can be rewarding, and every scream can surprisingly boost your confidence. “Nothing tops the feeling of scaring the life out of a group of people coming through the house. When I first started, it was so hard not to laugh when these people got so scared, but now it just brings a wave of confidence and makes me feel good at what I do, even if it is a little bit different than your typical job” Ratto Said.

Movie Review

Review by Daphne Zirjacks | Design by Taylor Thompson
L
ooking for a movie to put you in the Halloween spirit? I recommend watching, Sometimes They Come Back. It is one of the movies on my Halloween movie list. I like the fact that it was filmed in Liberty, Missouri. That makes it feel as if I am a little more connected to the movie, since it was filmed right next to Heritage Middle School. It goes in the same direction as most Steven King movies do with the plot twists, murders, and mysteries. The mystery of wondering whom the killer is and why they are murdering adds to making the movie intense and worth watching. The twist of the gang being ghosts and tormenting Jim is a great way to make the movie suspenseful. When Jim tries to get his dead brothers help to stop the gang, it really makes this film a true Halloween thrill. The fact that the gang tries to kill Scott the same way they killed Wayne to protect themselves from going to hell is ironic. Finally in the end when the gang dies the same way they originally did is also something I find ironic. I don’t usually watch creepy movies, but this one has a thrill to it, and I think it is something everyone should see at least once. That is why I give it a three out of five on the scare o’meter. After you see Sometimes They Come Back, you can decide if it is on your Halloween movie list.

ex Trafficking is no joke. So many people are oblivious to the idea of sex trafficking occurring in the United States, or even as close as Kansas City. But it is a real issue that many women are victims of against their will. The Eagle’s View staff agrees that Liberty North students need to become more informed on the effects of sex trafficking, especially considering it is happening so close to home. Although we can do little to stop sex trafficking itself, we can at least take a stand against the issue. Even doing as little as looking into the effects and amount of victims sex trafficking holds is a solid start. Try taking some time to look up some true stories of those who have been a victim of sex trafficking; although extremely sad, these stories will open your eyes to the world of sex trafficking and how it effects our lives.

s Halloween sneaks up on us, spooky costumes for our house pets are popping up in stores all around the world. There are three kinds of people in our society - there are the people who absolutely love dressing up their pets, the people who could honestly care less, and then there are the people who despise the owners who put their animals in costumes. I most definitely fall under the category of the people who absolutely love dressing up their pets. I mean, is there anything cuter than a furry kitten in a witch hat? No, there most definitely is not. Putting animals in Halloween costumes just gets people more in the holiday spirit. Some could argue that we are “torturing” our beloved pets by forcing them into costumes, but it cannot be considered torture if the animals love the attention, or “paparazzi” all up in their grill; it makes them feel important. So if you’re one of the people who can’t stand when owners dress up their pets, step back, take a chill pill and embrace the spirit of Halloween with your beloved pets by your side.
Pets in Halloween Costumes
I
am not saying that it’s not adorable, that is a battle I will never win. However, it doesn’t really make sense to buy a costume for dog. Honestly your dog doesn’t care, in fact odds are that your dog hates being shoved into the tight costume. All costumes cost money, sure it’s not a massive cost but what’s the point in wasting even a dollar on something that you’ll put your dog in twice at most. It’s honestly pointless, you can say that you’re doing to make your dog look cute because you love it but really you’re doing it so you can get some attention. I especially have a bone to pick with anyone who feels the need to dress up their cat - a cat is not even an animal you would take trick or treating. All you end up doing is taking half a dozen pictures then putting them on social media, and you know that your cat hates whatever costume its in. I’m not going to say that the costumes don’t make me laugh sometimes or that they’re not cute but in the long run it doesn’t really matter, save your money and your time and skip the pet costumes.

I
am definitely not what you would call a morning person. You could say that I’ve been known to get a little angry when my alarm goes off at such an ungodly hour. I truly believe that mornings are from hell and I refuse to get along with them. It’s bad enough that I have to leave my warm, comfy bed, but I actually have to pull myself together and somehow function in society for a whole day. I feel like that’s asking a lot considering I would much rather stay in bed for an extensive amount of time with nothing but Netflix and my cat to keep me company. I will never be able to understand how people can wake up with a smile on their face knowing that they have been robbed of numerous precious hours of sleep, because being apart of team sleep deprived is TOTALLY A FUN TIME! So congratulations to all you go getters who wake up early with a positive attitude and somehow have your lives together. I’m definitely impressed. So tomorrow morning, if I’m woken up earlier than I should be, I will not be responsible for my actions.

very month I have an opinion column, and you would think (being the opinion editor and all) that I would easily be able to come up with a topic to write my column on. But let me tell ya, it’s a lot harder than it seems. Or maybe just for me – because let’s be honest, making decisions has never been my strong suit. I struggle with the simplest of decisions. For example, deciding which route to take going to the grocery store; why can’t there just be one route so I don’t look like a complete idiot sitting at the stop sign for decades trying to figure out if it would be better for me to turn left or right, even though I will eventually get to the exact same place? And honestly, in the time it takes me to process each option, I could have gone to the store, got what I needed, and came back, probably with time to spare. And the fact that I have to grow up and manage adulthood with a severe case of indecisiveness is a scary thought. Luckily, my indecisiveness issue has one perk – I finally came up with a solid column topic I can rant about!

onfrontation tends to be some people’s biggest fear. Situation: last spring I confronted someone of what I believed to be an unjust move and this person’s ego melted right in front of me, it was quite an interesting sight. They had made such bold moves behind my back yet when it came down to being face to face, they couldn’t stand up for themself. It is extremely easy to go through life without real confrontation. Behind a screen one has time to compose their thoughts and next move to attack another, however when presented face to face, the response is expected immediately. In such a world of “right now” humans have socially become reliant on having time. I question whether or not this is a problem. Is passive aggressiveness a dysfunction of society or rather is it a latent function of our technology-aged world? Is this anti-confrontation attitude a digression of social skills or just a character trait? I feel that if we are heading down a path to where confrontation is frowned upon, then we are headed to a discontent and socially inactive body of people.

alloween is right around the corner, and everyone is looking for last minute costumes. I am someone who is always last minute when it comes to getting costumes. It is so hard to decide what to be. There are costumes that I see at least one person in every year, and this makes me want to find a costume that is unique. The costumes I see most of during the Halloween season are ladybugs, bumblebees, cats, pirates, and many more. Being someone who is last minute makes it hard to actually put time into a costume, but people need to be more unique when choosing their’s. Instead of copying what everyone else wears on Halloween, people should try to pick something that expresses themselves. Pick a costume that expresses your personality. That is sure to make it a little less cliche. When I choose a costume I think of things that I think would still be cute, but not something I see every year on Halloween. It is the one night of the year you can dress up as anything you want, so everyone should be original when choosing.

Avoid The ‘roids the scary truth about performance enhancing drugs Story by Cici Sheeks | Photos by Brandon Ditsch | Design by Kelsey Runge
P
erformance-enhancing drugs are used to increase metabolism and strength to improve in a sport. A few weeks ago, Florida Gators quarterback Will Grier was suspended for a year after he tested positive for the use of performance enhancing drugs. Although he is planning on rejoining the team, the fact that he was using PEDs will stay with him throughout the rest of his career. “I was kind of upset when I found out that Will Grier was using PEDs. I don’t think that it is worth taking performance enhancing drugs because if you’re caught, your career is pretty much over,” junior Drew Geisert said. Although some of the short-term effects sound appealing, PEDs are very dangerous and can contribute to many health problems for the user. These health problems include liver damage, hormone imbalance, and cardiac problems that can lead to heart attacks. Other effects include roid rage, or uncontrollable emotions, violence, increase in ache, growth of body hair on women, and an increase of breast tissue in men.
“There is a significant amount of consequences both long term and short term as a result of steroid use. It greatly increases your risk of heart disease, heart attacks, stroke; it increases your risk of tendon injury, likelihood of cancers, tumors. There are personality changes that also come with the use of steroids,” athletic trainer Jeff Snow said. Those who take performance-enhancing drugs are at a higher risk of injury, because the drugs damage tendons and strain muscles. The most damage is done to major joints like the knees and elbows. This could result in permanent injury to the user. “I think that Grier was just trying to look for the easy way out. Sometimes people use PEDs because they are pressured by their coaches, and don’t feel like they are good enough. Obviously using performance enhancing drugs have such bad repercussions that it’s not worth it. It could cause serious health problems and get you removed from your team,” senior Alan Lozada said.

Head injuries are common throughout most sports and people playing sports have a high risk of getting hurt from a concussion. “When I got my concussion from playing softball I felt very dizzy and I had a lot of headaches. There was a lot of pain in my head and I couldn’t do very much for a while,” freshman Chloe Clarke said. There are ways to detect to see if someone has experienced a concussion and specific symptoms that take place when someone suffers from head trauma. If athletes are able to identify these symptoms it can better help someone get treatment for a concussion. “There are up to approximately 50 different symptoms of a concussion. The most common ones are: headaches dizziness, nausea, light sensitivity, sound sensitivity, decreased appetite, sleep pattern changes, poor balance, etc,” athletic trainer Jeff Snow said. Concussions mainly happen in contact sports like football or soccer. Complications occur when getting a concussion like feeling irritable, having a lack of focus, and being sensitive to things that you normally wouldn’t be sensitive to.

“I got head-butted while player soccer and got a concussion. I felt dizzy and my head was throbbing. It was hard to focus and I was sensitive to sound,” junior Ben Hicks said. Practicing proper techniques and safety, wearing a concussion band on your head, and being educated about the ramifications of concussions are simple ways to prevent getting a head injury. Concussions continue to keep being reported and are becoming more prevalent. Teenagers and adults are becoming more aware of the indications of a concussion and are getting educated on the symptoms and treatments of a head injury. “I do believe a higher percentage of concussions are now being reported. This is due to parents and athletes having more education on the symptoms of concussions and possible long-term side effects. in regards to concussions, public education is at an all time high. Snow said,” athletic trainer Jeff Snow said. Concussions are very serious and need to be taken care of with caution. “So far this year we have diagnosed 25 concussions,” Snow said.
