SUDOKU PUZZLE
question.
There are many great things about the human body. Having a complex skeletal structure allows the human body to move in all different ways and allows people to do amazing things that require a large amount of flexibility such as gymnastics, dancing, ballet. Yet is it humanly possible for a person, no matter how flexible they are, to kiss the tip of their elbow? Guess the right one and be the first to report it to Trinidad and win a HEALTHY SNACK FOR THE DAY! The answer to last issue’s question was C. There are 900 calories & 37 grams of fat in a Big Mac, Fries combo. Provided by dailysudoku.com
CAN YOU SOLVE THE LOGIC PUZZLE? The So Kool Record company recently held auditions across the country to find four singers to form a new band. The four guys chosen are now super-stars Can you work out each guy’s previous day job, his age (19,20,21,22) and hometown? 1. Greg is exactly two years younger or older than the guy from Cleveland who used to be a truck driver. 2. Either Darren or the guy from Seattle (who may or may not be Patrick) used to deliver pizzas. 3. The guy from New York is younger than Daniel but older than the one who used to be a carpenter. 4. The 22 year old from San Francisco isn’t the one who used to be a waiter.

PICKIN’THE CHICKEN The search for the best chicken sandwich in Liberty.
STORY BY MADI SAUNDERS
CHICK-FIL-A The top of the totem-pole in regards to chicken is said to be Chick-fil-A, so I had to try it for myself. They did not disappoint. The chicken was fried and crispy, yet succulent at the same time. The toasted bread completed the amazing chicken. Not only did the chicken taste good, it was a large portion and gave me that stuffed feeling I did not get from the others. Unfortunately, there were two things I did not like about the sandwich: the smell and the pickles. The pickles are not a necessity and give the chicken a sour taste. One could always take the pickles off, but the smell is atrocious. Aside from that, however, it was the best chicken sandwich overall.
SONIC Sonic’s unique atmosphere is delightful. They have some of the cheapest fast food, and equally as tasty. As I was presented with my food, the aroma filled my car. It smelled delicious, so I unwrapped the package. When the chicken sandwich was revealed, I was surprised that it was not the traditional chicken patty, but instead two chicken strips as the sandwich. I took a big bite of the sandwich and all I tasted was chunks of onion, bread, mayo, and lettuce; there was no evidence of chicken. As I continued to eat the Jr. Chicken Strip Sandwich the chicken tasted so dry. If you have the Jr. Chicken Strip Sandwich, make sure you get a refreshing iced tea to wash it down; you’ll need it!
WENDY’S Wendy’s motto; “Quality is our recipe” is supported by their Crispy Chicken Sandwich. The chicken was a large slab of meat carefully covered by the toasted bun. The smell made my mouth water and the anticipation of the sandwich was killing me. When I finally took a bite of the chicken, it was a piece of crunchy perfection, unfortunately, the lettuce was so slimy that it ruined the whole sandwich. On top of that, the mayo was a huge blob in the middle. The least they could do was spread the mayo out to give it an even consistency. It would have been a great sandwich if it were just the chicken alone. Wendy’s needs some help with condiments on their chicken sandwich to compliment it.
McDONALDS The famous food chain McDonalds should change their name to McDisgusting based on all of their food. As I unwrapped the package of my McChicken sandwich, the grease practically poured out. The sandwich’s appearance should have warned me what it would taste like. Grease covered the soggy bread, and the chicken was a pale color, but I took a bite of the sandwich against my better judgment. The McChicken is supposedly made with 100% white meat, but after that bite of “chicken”; it seems like the chicken had just jumped out of the ocean. I wondered what that fishy smell was; now I know. The only thing that the sandwich had that was good was the great texture of the chicken patty. McDonalds specialty is their Big Macs, and they should just stick with that. Leave the chicken out of it.

edding cake, Snickers, pineapple upside down cake and coffee. It all sounds good but is loaded with calories. Liberty now has two healthy shake and smoothie bars that offer the flavors anyone would love without the calories and with the nutrition you need.
“Chillers is an Herbal Life nutrition club where people come for healthy shakes, nutritional supplements and to learn about
nutrition,” manager of Chillers Jeff Helton said. Liberty Nutrition, the original Herbal Life nutrition club in Liberty, offers the same great smoothies and shakes on the other side of town. “We help people lose weight, gain weight and build muscle. Most people who come here are either athletes who need to stay in shape for their sport or people who are trying to lose weight,” owner and founder of Liberty Nutrition Bill Meisner said. When a customer orders a shake or a smoothie at both places they are given the shake that they choose and a tea. They can choose between original, lemon, mango or raspberry, that boosts a persons metabolism; all for $6.50. “When a customers purchase a shake from us, we give them their shake and a tea, plus an aloe shot which helps with digestion,” Helton said. There are flavors for every type of person, from fruity, coffee, chocolate and everything in between. “I like to go to Chillers because it is quick and on my way to school and I know that it is good for me. Normally I get the Reece’s chocolate peanut butter shake. It is really good and I don’t have to worry about the calories,” senior Bailey Barnett said.

Many North athletes like to indulge themselves in a smoothie either for breakfast or for a quick post-workout snack. “I really like the shakes at Chillers because they make you feel good and they taste good. They keep me full and help me to not eat bad foods during the day. The owners are really cool and nice too. My favorite shake is the Pina Colada,” junior John Barry said. Not everyone who enjoys Chillers or Liberty Nutrition is a varsity athlete, there is something for everyone. The ingredients in the drinks are simple and low in calories. “To make our shakes we use the Herbal Life product which contains the nutrients our bodies need, sugar-free jello pudding, water, ice and real fruit for the fruit smoothies and shakes,” Helton said. All ages from Youth Little Leaguers, college athletes, high school students and marathoners can enjoy a healthy and filling shake from either Chillers or Liberty Nutrition. “There is a flavor for everyone. We have lots of different smoothies that are awesome, everyone just has to find their flavor,” Meisner said. Senior Kane Sheek sits at the counter of Chillers before order a protein shake. “I like Chillers because you can get a protein shake that come in a ton of flavors and is super nutritious”, sophomore Austin Casel said. Identical twin sisters share their opinions on what it is like to have someone exactly like themselves STORY BY EMILY RHEW
S
ince birth they have been together and are almost never separated. They have the same facial features, but different personalities. Identical twins that are just like every other siblings. They take the same classes and have a majority of the same friends. The Pittmans are two distinct individuals that just so happen to be twins.
Sophomores Melissa and Jessica Pittman are identical twins. Most people would think that having a twin would be
weird, but Jessica and Melissa disagree. “It’s a lot like having a sibling the same age as you. It’s like you go through everything at the same time, so you’re just always together,” Jessica said. Although they have some differences, the Pittman twins are always getting confused with who is Jessica and who is Melissa. Even their own parents get confused about who is who. “I personally get a little angry when they get confused over the phone. Like how can you not know who it is? But it is not that bad anymore. I’ve gotten used to it,” Melissa said. Twins or not, every sibling has their differences. The Pittman sisters said that a quality of one of them is the complete opposite for the other. “I’m an optimist and she’s a pessimist. We even have different hair colors. We are just total opposites,” Jessica said.
1
Despite this, they do have a lot of similarities. Both of them are in debate and are partners and they also enjoy the same classes. However, they do not always agree with each other with everything.
1
Jessica and Melissa Pittman pose for a picture and show off their twin like features. “I don’t really know what it is like to not have a twin...it is like having a regular sibling”, Melissa said
“We have different personalities, but it just happened when we grew up with each other. I started to be more harsh and she became more nice,” Melissa said. They are friends with same people, which causes them to almost always be together. “I hate it when Melissa and I say the same thing at the same time. Our friends go crazy and say it’s because we are twins. Then they start to ask if we can read each other’s minds. It’s so annoying,” Jessica said.

The girls have their picture taken on a bed when they were just little girls. “When we were little, confusion happened a lot. That’s why Melissa dyed her hair. Our parents still get confused over the phone sometimes but not as much anymore,” Jessica said
Jessica and Melissa laughing at something one another said. “No, we can’t read eachother’s minds. I can tell what she is thinking though by the situation or by her facial expressions,” Melissa said.
The Pittman twins do not enjoy it when they are asked if they have “twin telepathy”. They agree that they can tell what the other is thinking depending on the type of situation and by each other’s facial expressions, but they cannot directly read each other’s minds. Just like every other sibling, Melissa and Jessica have their ups and downs in their relationships. “It actually depends on what is going on. If the situation is good then we get along. But if it is a bad situation then we fight. It is a love/hate relationship,” Jessica said. Being with each other almost every hour of every day, they do tend to get annoyed with each other but even when they do fight, they will then go back to getting along before long. “We will fight but then bounce back to being friends again,” Melissa said.

Operation positive has had a very positive impact on Liberty North
W
STORY BY ALLY PAYNE hen a student walks through the halls of their school, they would not usually expect to see sayings like, “Life isn’t about waiting for the storm to pass, it’s about learning to dance in the rain,” posted throughout. Positive sayings can increase optimism throughout the student body and faculty, and help students feel safer and more comfortable in their school.
Students seemed to enjoy the idea of the posters. The posters motivate and get students in a positive mindset. “Operation Positive motivates people and gets them out of their boring, everyday moods. It gets them pumped up and positive to help others,” junior Billy Gelenski said. FCCLA, a school organization that focuses on making school a better place, is led by Mrs. Fowler. “Operation Positive is a way of reminding students that life is good, and that daily stresses and trials are affected mainly by your attitude. Most things are never as bad as they initially seem. Operation Positive is a great reminder of that,” FCCLA Adviser Jody Fowler said. With positive sayings posted all around the school, positivity is lacking. Students say seeing these posters helps them look at their day in a more optimistic way. “I just walk through the hallways and read them. They put me in a better mood. I just really like reading them and what they have to say, and how positive they are,” senior Anna Gomez said. Posters like these have even made students feel safer and more welcome in their school. “I personally like seeing the posters and knowing that people actually are putting in time to help others and make them feel better. I got to be in a flash mob and it was cool to see people positively affected by it. Seeing the encouraging messages everyday makes me happy and gives me hope. It just makes the school feel safer and more friendly,” junior Lucy Ascencio said. These posters have not only increased positivity throughout the student body; they are expected to really make a change in students’ days as well. “You can never have enough positive things during the day. It’s always great to have as much positive things going on in your school day as possible, as I hope this project can do,” principal Dr. Jacobs said. Operation Positive will continue throughout the year, including a week of positive dress-up days in April to keep the positivity going as long as possible. “I think Operation Positive should be used again every year. It makes school a little more friendly and a more positive place to be,” Gomez said. The posters throughout our school have had a positive effect on students throughout each week. “When I’m having a bad day, I see the posters on the wall and they help me get through the day,” junior Jake Hanson said. Operation Positive is a great way to improve our school.

The iPhone is a multimedia and internet based smart phone produced by Apple. It features a video camera, camera phone, portable media player, and Internet client with email and web browsing. The phone can send texts and receive visual voicemail. It also has 3G and Wi-Fi capabilities. “I love my iPhone. I wanted internet and Siri, when I’m driving. I can have it do what I want whenever I want,” hall monitor Stephanie McGill said.
iPad The iPad is a tablet computer designed and marketed by Apple. It is primarily used as a platform for audio-visual media including books, movies, music, and apps. “ I use an Ipad every once in a while. I wish I could use it a lot more because it is the most useful thing I’ve ever seen. Its way better than the Mac computers,” sophomore Matt Blackwell said.
iPod The iPod is a mp3 reading device that was produced by Apple inc. It has evolved into an mp3 device that reads mp3’s, mp4’s, and jpg’s, and most of all apps. “I love my iPod. It’s small, easy to use, and is never boring. I can get tons of apps, music, videos, anything I want. Usually I just use it to check mail, updates, and sport stats, that way I don’t have to turn on the TV or laptop,” sophomore Tyler Goebel said.

The Android is a smart phone that runs off its own unique system. It is similar to the iPhone as it plays music, photos and apps, but uses a different app store. “My favorite thing about my Android is being able to get on Facebook, other than that I don’t really do much with it,” sophomore Kyle Bowers said.
Kindle The Kindle Fire is an upgraded version of the Kindle. The Fire runs a modified version of Google’s Android operating system. It has access to the Amazon Appstore, movie streaming and TV show streaming. “I use the kindle fire a lot. I like how it runs apps like the IPod but reads e-books a lot more efficiently than Apple Products. I prefer to use it for apps because it doesn’t crash the way my Ipod does,” sophomore Kenneth Hilton said.
MP3 Mp3 are devices that play music, photo and video files, similar to Ipods, but not made by apple. “ I love my mp3. Ipods are overated anyways. They don’t do any more and are 100 dollars more,” junior Hugo Mendoza said.

ARMY BRAT molly A vast majority of teens grow up watching and learning from a parentfigure. Junior Molly Hertz’s father has been in the Marine Corps for 26 years. She has had to grow up with her dad rarely present. Being in a military family has affected Molly’s life dramatically. “We’ve had to travel and move to many states and countries for my dad’s career, which is why we had to move to Liberty this year. He has been deployed overseas eight different times to other countries,” junior Molly Hertz said. There are many obstacles Hertz goes through every day while her father is away. “I think the hardest thing when my dad is away is just not knowing if he is alive or not. We only get to talk to him every two weeks, so we never know what is going on and that is the scariest part of it all,” Hertz said. Though each day presents a new challenge for Molly and her family, there are many reasons why she is proud of her father. “I am proud of my father because he is my hero. I look up to him for everything he does and all of the courage he has for my family. Even though he can’t always physically be here for us, we always know that he is here in spirit. When he can be here, he constantly works his schedule around us in order to make it to as many of our events as possible,” Hertz said.
A BRIGHT FUTURE dakota
1
Junior Dakota Blankenship has decided to join the National Guard of Missouri after graduation. He is in search of learning more about himself and seeing the direction where the National Guard takes his life. “I begin basic training this summer. It starts right after school lets out and goes for the rest of the summer,” junior Dakota Blankenship said. Blankenship will be leaving behind his dad, mom, and younger sister, McKenzie. “I’m mostly scared of getting drilled during training, and I’ll be sad to leave my family, but I know I will feel accomplished when I return,” Blankenship said. His mother, Karen, has bittersweet feelings about him joining the National Guard. “I’m scared because Dakota is the only Blankenship boy so I don’t want him to get hurt. However, I’m excited for him because I want him to see the world and learn more about himself. I told him we will support any decision he makes and we will be here waiting when he comes home,” Karen said through her tears. Despite Karen’s fears and excitement, she has many wishes for Dakota as he opens up a new chapter of his life. “My biggest wish for Dakota is that he has a lot of fun, and meets new people, I want him to go on adventures, and do new things that I can’t show him here,” Karen said.
2
Dakota also has high expectations for himself, as he gets ready to depart. “I want to explore the world, and gain self-discipline and respect for myself as well as become a better person,” Dakota said. Though there will be many challenges for Dakota along the way, the experience he will receive will carry on for a lifetime.
LOVE IS A BATTLEFIELD lindsey The military affects many people, not only the people joining, but also the people left behind. Senior Lindsey Johnson experiences this situation every day because her boyfriend, Taylor, is in the Marine Corps. Many challenges must be faced while Lindsey’s boyfriend is stationed away from home. “A lot of stress is put on our relationship while he is away. It’s hard to have a long distance relationship for a long period of time, especially since we can’t talk every day. It’s also really hard to lead a normal high school life, like dances and going out with friends because I don’t get to have my boyfriend around like my friends do,” senior Lindsey Johnson said. Though every day is not perfect, Lindsey and her boyfriend continue to face challenges for their relationship each day. “A lot of issues do arise, but we try to work through them as much as we can. Mostly we just support each other in what we do each day. We talk on the phone whenever it’s possible, and we try to Skype at night so we don’t feel so distanced from each other. It’s not perfect, but it works for us,” Johnson said. Although Johnson is now supportive of her boyfriend’s decision to become a Marine, she did not always feel this way. “At first I did not support his decision. I wasn’t happy with the idea of my boyfriend being gone for years and that I may not know where he is. Now I definitely support his decision. He is so determined to be a Marine and I want to see him succeed,” Johnson said. Johnson also takes a lot of pride in what her boyfriend has decided to do with his life. “I’m proud of him for the dedication he has and for how strong he stays after everything he’s been through with training and being isolated from his family and friends. I know it takes a lot of courage and I’m proud to see him succeeding,” Johnson said.
Though the obstacles may be tough, these three teens continue to work through the day-to-day struggles. All of them manage to get through each day the best they can. They may seem like normal teenagers on the outside, but there is more to each of them than meets the eye. It takes an abundance of bravery, understanding, and patience to deal with the battles of love and war but, these students go above and beyond that every single day.
3 1
Taylor sits on a hill overlooking his soon-to-be training camp. “Taylor is still in school for Military Occupation Specialties, which is basically for his job inside the marines, which is good because I don’t have to worry about him everyday. But I am afraid for when he does get deployed. I know it will be nerve-racking to think about what he is going through each day,” senior Lindsey Johnson said.
2
Dakota Blakenship and his family prepare for him starting his journey in the National Gaurd. “I have such high hopes for Dakota as he heads off on the next chapter of his life. I just know it will be hard because I won’t be able to hear him say ‘Mom, will you scratch my back?’ at night,” Karen Blankenship said.
3
Molly Hertz’s dad poses for a picture in the hot sun. “I’m so lucky to have a dad like mine. I know that if there weren’t people like him out there, then we wouldn’t be able to live free and safe,” junior Molly Hertz said.

SCULPTING A MASTERPIECE Liberty North sculpture students share their techniques for transforming clay into art STORY BY JESSICA GRIFFITH a way for students to express themselves and create something meaningful by putting their

“Sculpture class has a very laid back surrounding, and you get to come up with your own ideas for
the most part, so it is usually something you’re inspired by,” junior Jordan Went said. When deciding what to sculpt, students are asked to think of their idea and draw it up so they have something to base their piece on. Students’ inspirations come from different places, people, and important moments in their lives. “When I begin to think of my sculpture, I think of something important to myself and incorporate it into my sculpture through symbols and colors,” senior Rebecca Filla said. Coming up with ideas for sculpting is only the beginning. The student must take a glob of clay and turn it into something worthwhile. The difficulties range from trying to smooth the clay to getting it into the exact shape that is desired. Students have to take their time and remember there are different techniques to create their piece. “Students use a variety of carving and hollowing techniques to create a final form. I am fairly tough when it comes to craftsmanship and skill development and students know they are making every mark, shape, and form, which is intentional. Meaning every part of the sculpture is important and must be treated with care,” art teacher Chablis Brendel said. There are many different projects that sculpture classes do including assembling a bust of the artist, creating bowls and assembling Chinese door guards. The students get to create what they want but have to base it off what the project is about.

Sculpting takes patience and motivation. “I am very passionate about sculpture and passionate about teaching my students to care about themselves and what they do,” art teacher Chablis Brendel said.

Sculpture is about trying new things, “We are currently making a bust of ourselves, I do not do a lot of realistic art and its nice to try something new,” senior Rebecca Filla said.
3
Not only does sculpture provide artistic expression, it can also be a relief. “I love sculpting because it is something new that I can do and use my hands, it is very creative fun to do,” senior Michael Dorcy said.
“My favorite sculpture is a character from a children’s book cartoon and I am using Clifford the big red dog,” Went said. Students must be careful while constructing their artwork so that it does not break and is up to par with the teacher’s expectations. Creating something that was originally formed in the mind of the artist into what the student sees as perfection is a fairly long process. When going into sculpture class, students can find a place to fit in whatever their skill is and learn new techniques to broaden their knowledge of the art form.

forum and when you take freedom
When someone makes a song and his or her music gets sold on the Internet, the musician gets part of the money each time someone purchases that song. Illegal downloading steals money from people who made the music. They deserve to get paid for the work that they have done. If we censored the Internet, then illegal music sharing sites would be taken down and artists would be able to profit from their hard work and talent. Another issue that the Internet causes is stealing of personal information. Every year thousands of people get their private information stolen over the Internet. If someone’s credit card information is stolen over the Internet, then that means that his or her whole bank account can be spent by someone else. If we censored the Internet, then the possibility of this happening would be so much lower.

away from a place created for people to express themselves, those people’s rights are being taken away as well. It is not right for the government to tell us what we can and cannot post on a website or social networking site. With freedom of speech, a person is entitled to his or her own opinion. This is a right that should not be able to be taken away by anyone, including the government. If the government were to censor the Internet, every day activities like using Facbook would be a thing of the past. Although social networking sites have made it easy for many people around the world to connect, sites such as Facebook and Google+ would be completely shut down by censorship. Say what you will about Facebook, it is still a useful tool for staying in touch with relatives and friends who might live far away from you. Many people would no longer be in touch with those closest to them if social networking were taken away.

student section, music blared from each wall, the Fan Cam showed the school spirit, and a halftime show with a contest was right around the corner. All of these extra activities are made possible by the Sports Marketing class here at Liberty North. “In Sports Marketing, we learn how to control a scoreboard and we get to learn the lingo of talking and directing the basketball games. For the Coaches vs. Cancer game, we set up the Chic - fil - A dinner and we were in charge of finding all the students who had someone close to them who have felt the effects of cancer to walk out during the quarters,” senior Jake Lewis said.
There is much more to gain from taking a class with such an interaction with the school. This class is a way to get involved, and adds many more expenditures to the field house. “We do the halftime and pregame show, and we do stuff with the jumbo-tron. We do the feed that goes on the jumbo-tron of game footage also. From taking the class, it is really beneficial and teaches us a lot. We get to learn about sponsorship deals that get to go on the scoreboard,” junior Zach Loethien said. The Field House is a terrific new addition to North’s premises, but the extra work involved for teachers and other volunteers during game day can be strenuous. “Each student in Sports Marketing 2 gets to experience things that most college students

GOT HANTIS?
Liberty North students are introduced to the new game Hantis
STORY BY COURTNEY SNYDER
A
tennis ball flies across the room and a player’s hand smacks it to the floor. It bounces against the floor where the other team of two returns it with a head butt. Out of four students, one misses the green ball and gets out. Luckily, the next person waiting in line
is eager to replace him. Imagine if, out of the dozens of games played everyday in high schools, one created out of pure boredom became the winner of 2011 New Game of the Year. The game Hantis made it that far, and it is just getting started. “I heard about Hantis from people at Liberty High School. I looked them up on Twitter and told them they should come to North; they said we’d have to get permission from the administrators. Liberty had them in the auxiliary gym. Kids came after basketball games and after school to play. It looks like a lot of fun and I want to play it,” junior Robin Rittermeyer said. The origin of anything can show the promise of the success it will have. “Hantis started at Scott County High School in 2005 in a news classroom when News Group 1
1
had finished all their work and had their internet games shut down. Nathan Gano brought out a tennis ball and the group began a game of hand ping-pong. Through teamwork and compromise, the group added rules to make the game more fun and include more players. The creativity of the group had then been transferred from news broadcasts to game design. Hantis was born,” Hantis support group leader Ben Fatheree said. The rules of Hantis are simple, making it easy for anyone to play. “In Hantis there are two teams of two players. The object is to get a player or both players on the opposite team ‘out’. When a player gets ‘out’, they go to the back of the line (running parallel to the tables). The remaining players shift into the next positions to fill in the gap as a new player comes into the game at the first table,” Fatheree said. North students are excited about this new and up coming game. “My church plays it sometimes. We just use four regular tables. We lower one side of the tables to give them an angle. Then we just play to practice teamwork but it’s not really a team effort; the team changes all the time. When you get out you just go to the end of the line and someone replaces you,” sophomore Bruce Thomson said. As popularity of Hantis grows, North students hope to become more familiar with the game.
2
“I really want the principals and administrators to get them here. There’s this move call the Kick Mic Nasty, it’s my favorite. It looks really cool and I really want to try it,” Rittermeyer said. The uniqueness of the game changes the word “game” all together. “Hantis is a mixture between hand ball, tennis, ping pong and four square. My church, Liberty

While playing Hantis, friendly competition is important. “It’s about having fun and getting individuals/teams to use their own creativity. Through playing Hantis, people can socialize and express themselves more freely, in a fun environment that promotes play,” Fatheree said.
