Foreword ‘Over the last 10 years I have been making trips to the islands of Scotland, those off the west coast - the Inner and Outer Hebrides. Walking and drawing on the islands and the ferries which connect the islands has resulted each year in etchings, drawings, paintings and monotypes. Last year I decided to make my first visit to Orkney: 67 islands, 7 miles north of the northern tip of mainland Scotland. I made the trip in December 2014, which meant short daylight hours, so early starts and treks back in the dark. Because of my limited time, I concentrated my walks on West Mainland, South Ronaldsay, Rousay and Hoy, which still enabled views of the surrounding islands.' - Jason Hicklin, April 2015

‘The title for the show comes from words by Ian Hamilton Finlay which are carved into a fifteen tonne piece of Portland stone from Cornwall and now situated on the Isle of Rousay, Orkney. The small etching in the show titled ‘Westray Firth and Faraclett Head, Rousay’ was from a drawing made sitting on this stone.’ - Jason Hicklin

Notes on the works in the exhibition ETCHINGS The etchings are made on zinc plates, etched with nitric acid and editioned to thirty on Somerset paper. Each is signed, dated and titled in pencil.

MONOTYPES The monotypes are printed in a graphite etching ink on smooth South Bank paper. The graphite ink has been drawn onto large sheets of glass before the paper is laid onto the ink. No press is involved, they are all printed from the pressure Jason exerts with his hand onto the back of the paper. Each is signed, dated and titled in pencil.

ZINC PANELS The etched zinc panels have been etched with nitric acid and inked up in a permanent etching ink and protected with a matt lacquer finish. They are mounted onto wooden panels and titled and signed on the reverse.

PAINTINGS The diptychs on canvas are painted in Paynes Grey etching ink. They are signed, dated and titled in pencil on the reverse.
