Committee Address On behalf of the Teachers’ Musical Society, it gives us great pleasure to extend a warm welcome to every one of you tonight. Following many months of planning and rehearsal, from a host of dedicated and hard-working people, we are delighted to present to you our performance of 42nd Street. Following the successes of our productions of the dramatic Michael Collins – A Musical Drama in 2013, Ragtime in 2014 and All Shook Up in 2015, we decided that the time was right to tackle a Broadway classic. The quintessential backstage musical comedy classic, famous for its tap numbers, 42nd Street has presented a very different challenge than those of our most recent productions. The committee would like to pay tribute to the entire cast for their commitment and enthusiasm over the past few months. This show required a very special production team. We welcome back Director Pat McElwain, Choreographer Orla Savage and Musical Director Dermot O’Callaghan. The society is very grateful to all three for the tireless work that they have put into this production and for the great vision and drive that they have provided. We are also grateful for all of the great assistance they have received from all of those who work behind the scenes on the set, stage management, props, lighting,

sound, costumes and make-up. With the significant costs involved in staging any show, no production would be possible without the financial support and goodwill of our sponsors, patrons and advertisers. We would like to express our appreciation to all who have made tonight possible, especially our main sponsors the INTO, both Head Office and branches, and Comhar Linn INTO Credit Union. Finally, we are delighted to welcome you, our audience to the O’Reilly Theatre. Thank you for your support this year and every year. Without you there would be no show. We hope that you enjoy watching the show as much as we have enjoyed working on it.

The History of Teachers’ Musical Society Teachers’ Musical Society was established in 2000, when a small group of primary school teachers decided to establish a society to produce musicals just for the love of performing. The first show -Fiddler on the Roof - was performed in St Patrick’s College, Drumcondra in December 2000. We are particularly happy that, in the years since our first production in St. Pat’s, we have embraced members from all sectors of the teaching profession, primary, postprimary and third level. In our first year affiliated to AIMS (2002) we staged Oklahoma! in the Rupert Guinness Theatre. We started to pick up the reputation of putting on very good shows and having fun at the same time, both on and off stage. The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas sidled up to full houses in 2003 and we ran riot at the New Ross Choral Festival in May. 2004 brought about our hugely successful Dublin premiere of Honk! The Ugly Duckling. We were placed 2nd overall at the International Festival of Light Opera in Waterford with this show. This was followed by Oliver in 2005 and the Irish Amateur Premiere of Seussical in 2006, both hugely successful. We

also continued to enter the New Ross Choral Festival, winning in 2005 and again in 2013. Our production in 2007 was The Hot Mikado and in 2008, we flirted with the world of horticultural horror with our staging of The Little Shop of Horrors. 2009 saw us produce Crazy for You, the New Gershwin Musical, for which we won three awards at AIMS. 2010 led us into the magical world of Disney’s Beauty and the Beast. In 2011, we changed direction, choosing the classic My Fair Lady, in which we received nominations, with Helen Killeen winning the award for Best Supporting Actress. In 2012, we returned to an all-singing, all-dancing type of The Wiz and in the following year, we changed direction again for our production of Michael Collins – a Musical Drama, which gained six AIMS nominations and three winner awards. Ragtime, our 2014 production, continued our exploration of dramatic shows. Last year’s All Shook Up saw us getting 5 nominations. We won in the Best Choreography category and were runners-up in the other four, including Best Overall Show. We wish you a most enjoyable evening on 42nd Street!

ALI MURPHY Hair & Make Up I always said that if it got to the stage that I didn’t enjoy doing what I do, I’d give it up. 30 years later I’m still happiest when back combing like a loon and slapping muck on mushes. I’m delighted to back working with this bunch of loons. Over the years I’ve turned them into whores, ducks, jungle animals, foliage, even ladies and gentlemen and cartoon characters to name but a few. Will they never learn??? Here’s to a happy 42nd Street.

MÁIRE MONAGHAN Props Mistress Marie has worked on the props tablef or more years than she cares to remember. She commenced her prop career with her home society, the Pioneer Musical and Dramatic Society and has worked with nearly every Dublin society. Marie lent props for the first two TMS productions and came on board as full time props co-ordinator for The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas in 2003. She has worked on almost every show since. The oddest prop she was ever asked to source was a donkey! She wishes the cast and crew all the best for 42nd Street and is indebted to her two assistants Annette nd Moira.

Synopsis It is 1933. Auditions for Pretty Lady, Broadway’s newest show have nearly ended when Peggy Sawyer, fresh off the bus from Allentown, arrives to take part. Billy Lawlor, already cast, hopes he can get a date with her and tells her that, although she is late, he can help her get an audition. However, his plan fails when Andy Lee, the choreographer is unimpressed and doesn’t co-operate. Embarrassed by her failure, Peggy rushes away and runs straight into the director, Julian Marsh.

Act One

Dorothy Brocket, a fading star, is outraged at having to audition for a part, but co-author of the show, Bert tries to pacify her by saying he only wants to make sure the songs are in her range. She is cast, mainly because the show needs the backing of her wealthy boyfriend, Abner Dillon.. It is confirmed that Dorothy’s ankle is broken and the show is in danger of closing. The chorus m e m b e r s remind Julian of Peggy’s great talent and are certain she could take the lead. Julian rushes to catch up eith Peggy before she leaves town.

Act Two

At the railway station, Julian apologises to Peggy and asks her to star in the show. She says she has had her fill of show business and is returning to Allentown. Julian tries to persuade her by asking her to “Come on along and listen

Outside, members of the cast take pity on Peggy and bring her to lunch with them. She does a dance routine for them which Julian sees, and he decides that she is so good, she can be cast after all. Julian learns that Dorothy is still seeing her former boyfriend, Pat Denning behind Abner’s back and, fearing for the show’s finances, puts in a call which results in two thugs visiting Pat and ‘persuading’ him to break off the affair. The company now leaves for Philadelphia for the out of town tryout of the show. On opening night, Peggy has an accident which results in her crashing into Dorothy, whom she knocks to the stage. Julian fires Peggy immediately. to the lullaby of Broadway”. The chorus join in and she decides to stay. Peggy almost suffers a breakdown as she tries to master the part in only two days. Even Dorothy is forced to admit that Peggy is good. She offers her advice on playing the role. On opening night, by which Julian is madly in love with Peggy, the show is a hit. Peggy decides to go to the chorus party instead of the official first night one. Julian, is left alone on stage in the final scene and sings the iconic number ‘42nd Street’.
