A catalyst for good Earlham is a liberal arts college with a little quirk and a lot of heart. Here, students, faculty and staff come together from around the globe to learn, to inspire, to grow—and ultimately, to change the world.
“If every college and university sharpened young minds and consciences as effectively as Earlham does, this country would approach utopia.” COLLEGES THAT CHANGE LIVES
Earlham is the best kept secret in the Midwest. WELL, SORT OF.
U.S. NEWS & WORLD REPORT

Your partners in good In the 1970s, the band Ten Years After famously sang, “I’d love to change the world, but I don’t know what to do.” Clearly, they weren’t Earlhamites. At Earlham, your professors will walk alongside you every step of the way to ensure that you can—and will—know what to do on your way to changing the world. Our faculty are fascinating, brilliant world-changers in their own right, and you’ll be on a first-name basis with each of them. You read that right: we don’t use titles here, an intentional choice that hearkens back to our Quaker roots. Our faculty and students approach learning as a collaborative process. Don’t expect to sit in a lecture hall passively absorbing information— you’ll be asked to fully engage as a partner in the classroom. As both a teacher and a learner, you’ll contribute your own knowledge and perspective to every subject you encounter.
CHALLENGE FOR YOUR HEAD. P U R P O S E F O R Y O U R H E A R T. An Earlham education has never been so relevant, important and needed as it is in the world today. The problems of our time don’t come in neat packages. Earlham produces graduates ready to find the creative and practical solutions that the world so badly needs. Earlham’s academics are rigorous but not for the sake of “separating the weak from the strong,” like many other colleges. At Earlham, you’ll be challenged and supported in equal measure, because we want to help you find your purpose and equip you to pursue it.

Meet Wendy Tori, the professor who will give you wings. You could say Wendy Tori loves birds. Over the course of her Earlham career, she’s taken students to Tanzania, the Amazon Rainforest, the Galapagos Islands, Papua New Guinea, Ecuador and Borneo, among other locations, to do avian conservation research.
Over the summer, Wendy, who is an associate professor of biology and an endowed chair in biology and ornithology, and Jaime Coon, a visiting assistant professor of biology, selected a team of Earlham students to travel to some of the last remaining grasslands in Lamoni, Iowa, to investigate ways to restore ecosystems that once sustained grassland birds.
“These are the types of experiences that make Earlham’s education a transformative one. Our students are very motivated to fully immerse themselves and use the knowledge they have learned to solve real world questions and make a difference.” –Wendy Tori

Meet Ahmed Khanani, on the court and in the classroom “I’m deeply invested in active learning and in making learning personal. I study and teach politics and, to me, politics is almost everything—from how you understand and experience gender or desire to why one or another party is particularly popular at a given moment. Politics, too, is above all personal. So, rather than asking students to read a text and then lecture about it, we read together and then wrestle with the ideas and arguments in our own personal lives as well as the lives of others.”
Favorite class to teach: Oof, this is a tough one. I’ll go with two: Gender and Sexuality in the Muslim Middle East and North Africa (MENA) and Genealogies of Nationalism in the Muslim MENA. Most likely place to be on campus: (a) my office in the CoLab; (b) missing jumpshots in the Athletics and Wellness Center; (c) my politics office! Favorite Richmond spot: Also a tough one! I’m going to pick Gulzar’s Indian Cuisine, but I have a lot of love for Thai Thara, too. In my streaming/book queue: Currently rewatching 30 Rock, the comfort food of TV for me. Planning to watch The Underground Railroad next. Also, for fun, I’m rereading a lot of Kurt Vonnegut—right now I’m about halfway through Cat’s Cradle. Hobbies: I’ve got two beautiful kiddos, so I don’t have a ton of time for hobbies, but I love playing (and watching—especially Denver Nuggets) basketball! Something you’d like to learn: Oh, wow, don’t know where to start. How about more languages? How to have 27 hours in my day? How to roll back climate change?
“Our students are curious, unafraid, and regularly work to really grapple (emotionally and intellectually) with complex ideas and the complexity of the world around us. They’re also a really welcoming crew.”

Out-of-office hours In this learning community, the emphasis is on community. You’ll see your professors grading papers at the student-run coffee co-op, hiking the trails on back campus and cheering on the Quakers at athletic events. Together, you’ll travel to Iceland for research, northern India for off-campus study or downtown Richmond for advocacy and community service. This is what Earlham is about: a community of people dedicated to learning and leading together, regardless of title or position. Because we’re better together.
Teaching and learning at Earlham is shaped by our belief that education should be a process of awakening the “teacher within.” We believe that every person brings unique knowledge and perspective to the table and that we should all strive to be lifelong learners. In other words, we’re all teachers as well as students. We also believe that it’s imperative for us to seek truth, wherever the evidence may lead. Nothing is taboo—we welcome the opportunity to explore all subjects, because through discovery, we find truth. FIRST NAMES ONLY No titles here. You’ll call your professors, staff—even the president—by their first name.

Leading lives for good Since 1847, Earlhamites have worked to change the world for good. They’re trailblazers, artists, advocates—in a word, they’re changemakers. Our alumni trailblazers include Margaret Hamilton, the NASA scientist whose code landed the first astronauts on the moon, and Zitkála-Šá, a writer and activist who advocated for Native American rights and cultural preservation in the early 20th century.
ZITKÁL A-ŠÁ
Alumnus Wendell Stanley won the Nobel Prize in chemistry for his groundbreaking research of viruses, while alumnus Manning Marable went on to write the Pulitzer Prize-winning book “Malcolm X: A Life of Reinvention.” Many Japanese-Americans escaped confinement in U.S. internment camps by way of invitations to enroll at Earlham College during World War II. There’s Golden Globe winner Michael C. Hall and Emmy winning writer Dan McCoy. There’s artist Simone Leigh, who will soon be the first Black American woman to represent the U.S.

“When I think about my time at Earlham, I think about great friends; I think about rigorous intellectual endeavors. I think about having the opportunity to try out everything I wanted to try out.” Sonat Hart graduated from Earlham in 1995 with an English major. After obtaining her Ph.D. and spending over a decade as a tenured professor in both the U.S. and Germany, she made a major career pivot. In 2008, she and her husband returned to Chicago and founded KOVAL Distillery, one of the largest independent and female-owned craft distilleries in the U.S.

Tsitsi Makufa Class of 2022 Psychology & global management major “Professors make the conscious effort to get to know your name along with your interests even after you are no longer taking a class with them. You refer to teachers and staff by their first names, which removes that awkwardness that hierarchy brings into relationships. The campus environment gives you room to form meaning and long-lasting relationships with your professors in and out of the classroom. Most professors have an open-door policy, and you are allowed to stop by at any point. Some even go as far as having an open house policy, where students are allowed to visit them and their families and share a meal. “What I love about Earlham is that the person I was in my first year is not the person I am today, because Earlham has awarded me so many opportunities to grow and go beyond my comfort zone. I am now more confident in myself, I am more aware of my strengths and what I bring to the table—I am even more ambitious than I was before. I have friendships that will last me for life, and I also learned how to be the best me, both for me and those around me.”
No rush. Just kick up your (bare) feet. What’s it really like to be an Earlham student? It’s feeling the grass on your bare feet as you walk to class. It’s never rushing a fraternity or sorority—because we have none. It’s learning to ride a horse in the only student-run equestrian co-op in the country. It’s dancing your heart out on stage at the end-of-semester recital for Dance Alloy. It’s feeling the dirt under your fingernails on our student-run organic farm. It’s visiting the Jewish Cultural Center for a Shabbat dinner, sitting in Quaker stillness at the start of a meeting and wishing someone a blessed Ramadan—all on the same day.
Caring for our corner of the world
COMPOST HAPPENS HERE.
Sustainability is close to our heart. Being good stewards of our resources, and this place, is an important part of who we are. One example of this is Miller Farm, an experiential agriculture program on campus, where students and faculty have begun planting prairies to restore native species to campus. As an institution, we’ve achieved a silver rating from the international Sustainability Tracking, Assessment and Rating System (STARS). We seek Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED) certification on all new buildings and major renovation projects, provide single-stream recycling and compost collection in all campus buildings and host a free bike share program for students. Plus, our Student Sustainability Corps, housed in our Center for Environmental Leadership, works to reduce waste on campus through the Earlham Free Store and other student-led initiatives.
The good life From vegan selections and halal meat options in the dining hall, to gender non-binary housing opportunities, to supportive groups for students from a wide variety of backgrounds and identities, Earlham is focused on creating a living and learning environment where you feel welcomed, supported and safe. Your voice, your experience, your unique perspective on the world—these things matter. In fact, they define the Earlham experience.
From the residence hall to the athletic field and everywhere in between, you’ll find yourself living and learning with classmates from all over the world—and together, you’ll build your own community of Earlhamites. Student housing options include residence halls, apartments and houses dedicated to the shared interests of students who live there. Our student organizations cover a wide range of interests and identities— from the Center for Inclusive Gender Identities and the Buddhist Student Union to Cabaret Club and esports. Class of 2023, Biology major “My favorite thing about Earlham is the students’ ability to branch out from their major and explore other interests. Don’t get me wrong—we focus on our majors and more than meet our requirements— but we are also encouraged to become well-rounded individuals who have multiple interests and can tie them all together in some way. “Not only are there friends here that have lasting impacts on you as a person, our professors give their heart and soul to their students. They push us to dive deeper, explore, and inspire a love of learning. “My most memorable experience at Earlham has to be going on a 10+ mile bike ride to the reservoir and then canoeing for hours on the water. It was a trip organized by the outdoor education office and though it was in Richmond, a place we have a lot of familiarity with, I got to explore the city differently and get back on a body of water—which I missed after being an ocean kayak leader for my high school.”

MARC GENDREAU Class of 2021 Global management major “Earlham is an extraordinary place. It gives you the ability to succeed on and off the field. “I started all four years on the varsity baseball team, being a big piece of the Quaker line-up day in and day out—and I was also able to take advantage of all of the special opportunities Earlham offered in the classroom. I traveled to Spain and Morocco the summer of my first year to do research. I competed in many business competitions—including the EPIC Grand Challenge, where my team won first place, and the Hult Prize, where my team got invited to the Santo Domingo region and placed sixth out of 300,000 teams. I even traveled to New Orleans to present my independent study research at a conference. “And these are just a few of the experiences that I have been able to get myself involved in, to make a huge impact on my life. I have taken the skills that I have learned on the baseball field and in the classroom to prepare myself to succeed at whatever I decide to do. “Being at a small liberal arts school challenges you in ways you didn’t know you could be challenged, but it will be something that you look back on after you’re done and say, I am so glad I chose a small school with so many opportunities.”
Mind, body, spirit and community WELLNESS AT EARLHAM
Athletics and wellness are an integral part of our community life. Just as we believe in educating the whole person, we strive to help you care for your whole being—mind, body and spirit. To help you in caring for your mind, Earlham offers both academic and mental health support services. In the Academic Enrichment Center, you can get help with organizing your writing, finding a peer tutor or requesting a disability accommodation.
