1.1 POINT / LINE / PLANE Through the process of exploring the relationships between point, line & plane, I found that the most interesting about them is how they are intersecting and relating to each other, when lines meet lines there are points, when planes meet planes there are lines, when points join together, there are lines. It is like a circular relationships between them. Thus, I start to explore that if there are ways to join them together without the former circulation. Inspiring by the precendents, this idea of the various sizes and shapes of triangular structure come to me.

1.2 MASS

10 Symbiosis Designs LTD, IT Incubators, Amman, Jordan.

‘Six Architects’ posters by Andrea Gallo

The idea of mass relates to the contrast between solid and void/ darkness and light and that’s what I am trying to do with my drawing, For the background, I’ve made some city view far away in order to contrast with my underground mass structure. Also, Lights are transmitted into the structure by the pathway, and the distance of lights will change in different time of the day, that’s playing with light and darkness. Just as the Symbiosis Designs LTD on the left is doing. In addtion, Inspired by the “six architects” poster by Andrea Gallo, this idea of cells come to me that each cells owns the same views but they are very separate to each other that works with the idea of secrets later.

Soren Korsgaard, Organic Cube.

1.3 FRAME & INFILL Frame to me is like the basic sructure of the design, thus I choose the very geometric cube as the frame of my work. Infill is all about playing with the space in the frame. In the Organic Cubes above, beautiful, varied and surprisingly simple structure which shows the potential of laths, through a study of detail, form and light, that could involve the viewer. Lights could be a kind of infill as well, such as the design for new national museum in Oslp, the structure is physically static, yet changeable through the viewer and the sun’s position. Through the day opens and closes for the light to pass. depending on the light and angle (time and place) the lines from the sky.

2.0 HERRING ISLAND. A PLACE FOR KEEPING SECRETS

Herring Island is a 3.2 hectares artificial land located in Melboure’s Yarra River. It is about 3km away from the city of melboure. it is formed in 1928 and made of an old basalt quarry. It is now managed by Parks Victoria and used as a sculputure park.

TYPOGRAPHY & PROPOSED SITE

2.1 SITE ANALYSIS AND CONCEPTACLE My proposed site location is around the North-west corner of Herring island, which is close to the ‘Steerage’ sculpture at the end of the island. In terms od typography, it is a relatively flat space with not many vegetation there. The pathway on the island is mostly made of mud which cannot be clearly seen, which makes it more interesting for visitors to explore herring island so they could choose whatever way they want to. Referring back to my design, it is a perfect location as it is a place where many people would reach but also can get a view of the river and city. Alao, as my work would not insert into the ground. A relativelt flat space would be better. 17

2.2 secrets My concept for secrets is paper crane.Thousand Origami Cranes is a group of one thousand origami paper cranes held together by strings. An ancient Japanese legend promises that anyone who folds a thousand origami cranes will be granted a wish by the Gods. In some culture today, folding a thousand paper crane is still used by people to express thier feeling such as a secret hard to tell others, it is a ways of expressing thier secrets.

2.3 CONCEPT AND SKETCH DESIGN Inspiring by paper crane, its shape is most interesting to observe in terms of architectural language, Different layers of paper creating different space experiences, some are open shile some are quite closed. Also, in terms of materials, the wings of crane feelins lighter than its body, so potential can refer back to my design that the overhang structure can be built with much lighter materials and the main body structure can remain heavy materials such as concrete. Starting from this idea, I get my initial idea of my design.

2.4 DESIGN DEVELOPMENT

Baseing on previous brain storming work, the design process come to a state that needs _to think more about details in architecture.

3.0 REFLECTION The three tectonics that are introduced, which are Point, Line and Plane, Mass and Frame and Infill, really help me to prepare for the final design of Herring Island. Through the process of working on each of them, I developed more skills than the start of the semester no matter from technical perspective or knowledge perspective. According to the research for the blog, I learnt to start my design by thinking about the concept firstly and then massive research about other people’s idea on the same concept and develop my own. For point, line and plane, as this is the very first concept that includes in the studio, I found it hard to understand it and just start to do some blind research on the internet but after the research, I started to come up with some ideas and tried to organize them together. Then for mass, I thought it would be the most secrets related concept within the three and it really took me a long time to think about the drawings. Thanks to the several drawings I did during the tutorial, I found the main idea of those and combined them into the final one. So when it is hard to come up with ideas, it is always a good method to do more work. Lastly, in the frame and infill, at that time I was already familiar with the process of design, so it became easy for me to complete the work. Overall, by practicing from these three concepts, it enables me to think and create the final projects. They are like three basic structure of the final design that frame the ideas and make it clear for me. Through the process of learning in the earth studio, it really makes me think that design is all about thinking about human experience. Like the secrets, it is the architectural language that makes people feel secure and feel easy to hide or reveal their secrets. Also, all the briefs that we need to meet is another way of helping us think more rationally and in much more details. As I only have one designing environment subjects that relate to design before earth, initially it is a little hard to make my design interact with people and their experience. The most difficult part for me maybe is how to make my design relate to secrets. I really struggle on how to make my three concepts join together and at the same being able to express the secrets idea. I tried several conceptacles and it is lucky that I finally find one. When the final models and drawings finally came out, it is surprising that all the work I have done before finally come to one all the struggles and hesitates before are gone. Overall, I really enjoy to be part of earth studio and learn from it. I knew less about architecture at the beginning and now I have improved a lot than before and feel more confident in my own design. I appreciate all the help from my tutor Lizz and the interesting lectures from the lecturer.
