Event Overview

4

Since our first event in 2011, broad-spectrum participation has been the primary focus of Earth Day Texas. The reason is simple: We may be able to interest everyone in conservation and sustainability if organizations that are meaningful to everyone are present to personalize the importance of conservation and sustainability.

ECO-FILM SERIES SCHEDULE PRESENTED WITH THE ENVIRONMENTAL MEDIA ASSOCIATION

SATURDAY GARDENERS OF EDEN 11:00 AM – 1:00 PM WOMEN’S MUSEUM

In Gardeners of Eden, actor, philanthropist, and producer Kristin Davis takes you on a gripping, first-person journey inside the operations of Kenya’s David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust. From the front lines of the crisis, we witness their heroic efforts to stop the poachers in the bush, rescue the orphans of slain elephants, and raise them by hand until, one day, returning them to their home in the wild.

EXTINCTION SOUP Stick around after for a Q&A with producer Jorja Fox, known for her role on CSI: Crime Scene Investigation. 1:30 PM – 3:30 PM WOMEN’S MUSEUM

Extinction Soup follows documentary filmmaker Philip Waller on his quest for adventure as he sets out to tell the story of his larger-thanlife friend and extreme sports legend Jimmy Hall. The film quickly takes a surprise turn when Waller finds himself consumed with exposing to the world an environmental catastrophe in the making — the extinction of the oceans’ shark population through the mass slaughter of these magnificent animals for their fins.

CONSUMED Followed by a Q&A with filmmakers Daryl Wein and Zoe Lister-Jones. 4:00 PM – 5:30 PM WOMEN’S MUSEUM

Consumed is a dramatic thriller that explores the complex world of genetically modified food. The story is anchored by a working-class, single mother on a hunt to uncover the cause of her son’s mysterious illness. Interwoven are the stories of an organic farmer, the CEO of a biotechnology corporation, two scientists on the verge of a major discovery, and an ex-cop caught in the middle of it all.

22

PRESENTING THE BEST NEW ENVIRONMENTAL DOCUMENTARIES AND FILMS 11:00 AM – 5:30 PM WOMEN’S MUSEUM Earth Day Texas believes strongly in the power of film to influence hearts and change minds. We proved this in 2015 when EDTx hosted the Texas premiere of the celebrated film Racing Extinction. In 2016, EDTx is curating a film series of new environmental documentaries to show all weekend.

ABOUT THE ENVIRONMENTAL MEDIA ASSOCIATION The Environmental Media Association (EMA) is a nonprofit organization founded in 1989 by Cindy and Alan Horn and Lyn and Norman Lear. ECO-FILM SERIES SCHEDULE

SUNDAY HOW TO LET GO OF THE WORLD AND LOVE ALL THE THINGS CLIMATE CAN’T CHANGE 10:30 AM – 1:00 PM WOMEN’S MUSEUM

In How to Let Go of the World and Love All the Things Climate Can’t Change, Academy Award– nominated director Josh Fox (GasLand) continues in his deeply personal style, investigating climate change — the greatest threat our world has ever known. Traveling to 12 countries on six continents, the film acknowledges that it may be too late to stop some of the worst consequences and asks, what is it that climate change can’t destroy? What is so deep within us that no calamity can take away?

ROOTED IN PEACE Followed by a Q&A with director Greg Reitman. 1:30 PM – 3:30 PM WOMEN’S MUSEUM

Director and award-winning filmmaker Greg Reitman invites viewers on a film journey to take notice of the world we live in, proactively seek ways to find personal and ecological peace, and stop the cycle of violence. The film incorporates aspects of Reitman’s own memoir along with interviews with renowned experts including Archbishop Desmond Tutu, green architect William McDonough, and neuroscientist Dan Siegel.

KOMBIT: THE COOPERATIVE Presented by Film Sprout and Timberland. 4:00 PM – 5:30 PM WOMEN’S MUSEUM

Decades of decline in Haiti have taken their toll and today the country is 98 percent deforested with little of its once prosperous agricultural industry enduring. To address these problems, the outdoor lifestyle company, Timberland, committed to creating a sustainable intervention in Haiti. This film follows Timberland’s fiveyear mission to support a nascent partnership between a Haitian agronomist and a former NGO leader to empower communities of farmers to plant millions of trees while improving their crop yields.
