THREE-DAY SHOW CELEBRATING F IVE YEARS OF EARTH DAY TEXAS!

IN THE SPIRIT OF TEXAS, EARTH DAY IS BIGGER AND BETTER THAN EVER BEFORE!
A
s we celebrate our fifth anniversary, Earth Day Texas continues to develop into the world’s largest — and most inclusive — forum for environmental stewardship. We expanded to three days to engage business and civic leaders across the country, we created a new meeting program to jump-start conversations, and we invited large numbers of high-caliber speakers, crafting EDTx into a major Eco-Conference.
This year our theme is New Urbanism, a constantly evolving story of density, walkability, inclusion, and an elevated quality of life. and urban design are There is so much to Architecture reshaping Dallas, as evidenced by see, do, and learn the latest construction projects dotting newly invigorated at our Texas-sized downtown. At EDTx 2015, learn Earth Day, and we how New Urbanism is reshaping the way North Texans interact with cannot wait to their built environments.
share it with you.
Bigger and better doesn’t stop there. The Common Ground Stage in Centennial Hall marks the first EDTx area entirely dedicated to food and agriculture. Over 100 green cars, trucks, and vehicles will be on display across Fair Park. The U.S. National Park System is kicking off its centennial year celebration with EDTx. We’ve even stepped confidently into the world of film and environmental advocacy by hosting the Texas Premiere of the new documentary Racing Extinction. Created by Louie Psihoyos, Academy Award®-winning director of The Cove, this movie follows activist filmmakers as they go undercover to expose illegal wildlife trade operations and start a dialogue about mass extinction and endangered species. That is just the tip of the iceberg. So y’all hurry! There is so much to see, do, and learn at our Texas-sized Earth Day, and we cannot wait to share it with you.

EDTX SPEAKER SERIES BUSINESS AND THE ENVIRONMENT FORUM Bill White (former mayor of Houston) and Bill Hammond (CEO of Texas Business Association) Bill White and Bill Hammond will discuss environmental protection and traditional business economics. It will be a dynamic conversation between two prominent Texans on how to sustain the state’s economy while developing a more conscious approach to environmental issues.
THE NATURE OF BUSINESS Joseph P. Quinlan Today, more than 7 billion people are laying claim on a water supply that hasn’t fluctuated in more than 2 billion years. Are urbanization, the emerging global middle class, and industrialization threatening to make water a greater potential famine than food? Will the next global war be fought over “blue gold”? U.S. Trust strategist Joe Quinlan, arguably one of the world’s leading thinkers on the human and business implications of energy and water resources, will explore these questions and more as he confronts the friction between balancing responsibility and profit. 8
INTEGRITY AND EARTH: Honoring Our Roots While Enhancing Progress Karenna Gore (director of the Center for Earth Ethics at Union Theological Seminary) Karenna Gore received an M.A. in social ethics from Union, a J.D. from Columbia Law School, and an A.B. from Harvard University. She previously worked as a lawyer and as director of community affairs for the Association to Benefit Children. She is author of Lighting the Way: Nine Women Who Changed Modern America. She lives in New York City with her three children.

CONSERVATION THROUGH ART AND TECHNOLOGY Solar Car Challenge At EDTx, high school solar car teams from across North Texas will show off the cars they have built as part of the challenge. The cars will be showcased outside Centennial Hall, and attendees will have the opportunity to vote on their favorite car based on visual appeal, use of solar panels and other sustainable materials, uniqueness of body style and functionality, and the student presentation of their work.
Mark Messersmith Art Exhibit
A Florida-based and highly celebrated artist, Mark Messersmith will display his recent body of work that explores themes of spirit and struggle within modern Florida’s natural environment. Messersmith’s works build on stories — either real or conjectured — along with his observations and concerns for all the creatures that move within the shrinking environs that they inhabit. These paintings are of a time and place midway between hope and despair. The artist himself will be onsite at EDTx and signing the Fifth Anniversary Posters featuring his work over the course of the weekend.
Citizen Science and Makerspace Workshop
Join Walter Johnson, Ph.D., Charlie Lindahl, and Ron Blake for the first-ever EDTx Citizen Science with Makerspaces Workshop. The presenters will bring unique insights to the interconnected worlds of citizen science, statistics, and the Maker Movement through their profound abilities to empower individuals to affect positive environmental change. This inaugural event will conclude with a roundtable discussion designed to develop year-round engagement opportunities, create take-home projects, and establish the format for an annual EDTx Citizen Science competition. 40

FOOD
The Common Ground
F
ood has power. It brings our communities together, determines our health and nutrition, and impacts how we use large amounts of land and natural resources. Organizations, both large and small, are harnessing that power to create a more sustainable global food system. Here at Earth Day Texas, we believe that we all must work together to achieve this We believe that vision, one seed, one hydroponic system, we all must work and one vertical together to achieve garden at a time.
this vision, one seed, one hydroponic system, and one vertical garden at a time.
In our exhibit halls, some of the most respected restaurants in Dallas will be serving samples of their mouth-watering wares and talking about why they choose locally sourced, organic, and nonGMO produce. Composting professionals will prove that composting is cool (and easy!) and innovative farming techniques, from aquaponics to vertical farms, will come to life on the Common Ground Stage. Come for the food, stay for the conversation, and learn about how you can eat greener and cleaner every day.
Chef Mark Wootten’s Garden Café is said to embody the farmto-table movement. True to its name, this East Dallas establishment has a beautiful patio and garden. Everything grown outside the kitchen ends up in a Garden Café recipe, with a full 5 percent of the vegetables and herbs used by the popular restaurant sourced straight from the backyard.
Chef Patrick Stark Popular Dallas chef Patrick Stark focuses on preparing food that is clean, GMOfree, as organic as possible, seasonal, grass-fed, even gluten free. He also founded the Mohawk Militia, an organization dedicated to creating awareness about the dangers of genetically modified foods and has teamed up with the North Texas Food Bank to provide fresh food to the inner city. Stark is an advocate for eating real, healthy food with a touch of rock ’n’ roll. CONTINUED

HEALTH AND WELLNESS
American Lung Association and LUNG FORCE Walk
L
UNG FORCE, led by the American Lung Association, is an initiative to unite women to stand together against lung cancer and promote lung health. Every five minutes, a woman in the U.S. is told she has lung cancer. The lung cancer death rate in women has more than doubled over the past 35 years. Anyone can get lung cancer and LUNG FORCE wants everyone to understand their risks. The LUNG FORCE Walk raises awareness of serious health risks like the frightening rise of lung cancer in women, the deadly disease COPD, daily challenges faced by asthma sufferers, and the pollution that threatens lungs and lives. Register to walk at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 25 in the Tower Building at Fair Park. The walk will start at 5:30 p.m. directly outside the Tower Building. Wear your walking shoes and show support for healthy lungs, people, and ecosystems.
American Heart Association Learn about the many ways you can boost heart health with the American Heart Association this April!
Additional Highlights include:
HANDS ONLY CPR One of AHA’s initiatives is to increase the bystander rate for CPR. If someone goes down, we have two steps to keeping them alive…dial 9-1-1 and push hard and fast in the center of the chest to the song — Stayin’ Alive! Practice with us!
TAKE THE SODIUM PLEDGE Extra salt sneaks into our diets and hurts our health in a number of ways. We all love salt, but it’s breaking our hearts! Take the pledge to break up with sodium and reduce your risk for high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, kidney disease, and other health problems.
SIMPLE COOKING WITH HEART Cooking at home can be a daunting task, but a rewarding one for your diet and lifestyle (and wallet). If you’re ready to start cooking at home and make small changes to improve your health, we have dozens of easy ways to do so! The recipes are simple, nutritious and easy to prep. Try a sample and start making healthy choices today!
TEACHING GARDEN ACTIVITY U.S. obesity is one of the most expensive health care problems in America. One third of U.S. children are overweight or obese, putting them at higher risk of heart disease and stroke. The AHA is taking a new approach to the fight against childhood obesity with Teaching Gardens! Learn how to plant seeds, nurture growing plants, harvest produce and ultimately understand the value of good eating habits!

RACING EXTINCTION Watch the Free Screening
I
n Racing Extinction, a team of artists and activists expose the hidden world of extinction with never-before-seen images that will change the way you see the planet. The international wildlife trade creates bogus markets at the expense of creatures that have survived on this planet for millions of years. Using covert tactics and state-of-the-art technology, the Racing Extinction team exposes these two worlds in an inspiring affirmation to preserve life as we know it. The film, directed by Louie Psihoyos, the Academy Award®-winning director of The Cove, opened to critical acclaim at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2015 and has already won the DC Environmental Film Festival’s Documentary Award for Environmental Advocacy. Free screenings will be held at the Music Hall at Fair Park on Saturday, April 25, and Sunday, April 26, at 2:00 PM and 6:00 PM. Want to get closer to the crime-ring-busting action? Check out the super-rigged Tesla mobile projection vehicle from the movie, as it will be on display at Fair Park all weekend long!
