what is EASA?
EASA stands for the European Architecture Students Assembly, however the EASA concept represents more than that. It represents an ambitious initiative at an international level, absolutely unique in the European university field, developed by and for architecture students. Since1981, over 400 students traveling from more than forty European countries, are meticulously selected by an open competition, to participate in the annual summer assembly which manifests as a two week workshop which is held in a different European city each year,. This is a non-profit event where participants and organizers take part in workshops, lectures and debates, with the common goal of enriching the city in which it is held, and therefore, enriching themselves.

IDENTITY EASA [European Architecture Students Assembly], is an international network of architecture students that, in collaboration with graduated architects and artists research the architecture and urban challenges of today. EASA is a platform for the exchange of ideas, experiences and thoughts, a starting point for interactions in the field of the city.
HISTORY EASA was founded in 1981 when students of architecture from Liverpool invited fellow students from all over Europe to come together to discuss and work on proposals addressing the problem of the city. The meeting comprised of 300 delegates, architecture students, and this constituted the first EASA. This inaugural assembly developed into an an annual international event where European architecture students gather in a different place every year with the purpose of exchanging ideas and points of view over architecture and working on proposals related to this context of our education and ambitions.
THE ASSEMBLY Every Assembly involves the participation of 400-450 architecture students who come together for an event composed of workshops, lectures, debates and exhibitions related to the proposed theme for the city in which the event takes place. The theme is always linked with reflections derived from the place and the interventions and consequently the actions and developments that occur are both practical and theoretical, with an intrinsic link to context.
THEME The aim of easa011 is to promote a recognition and devise proposals on the complexity of the place through actions, linked with the main theme of the Assembly. The XXXIth edition of EASA will be organized for two weeks during the summer of 2011 under the theme ‘deCOASTruction’, making reference to the de-configuration that the Spanish coast has suffered over the last years due to the housing boom.

PLACE EASA011 will be held in Cádiz, where the workshops, lectures, discussions and exhibitions will take place. The theme (deCOASTruction) deals with the process of de-configuration the Spanish coast has experienced over the last decades due to massive construction. We understand that the massive urbanization is phenomenon that has been produced at a national level so through lectures and activities we will help the participants to obtain a big picture of what urbanization has been in Spain over the last decades.
THE EASA NETWORK In addition to the summer meetings, EASA actively supports international communication and exchange through its National Contacts. These representatives [2 per country] are in regular contact throughout the year and meet every autumn for a week at the nominal INCM [Intermediate National Contacts Meeting] which is again held in a different country each year. During these meetings past events reviews are performed and decisions for the future events are discussed and confirmed amongst the representatives from each participating country.
OTHER ACTIVITIES EASA is an active network that also organises several SESAMs [Small European Students of Architecture Meetings]. These meetings can take place throughout the year in different countries with around 100 international students taking part in them. They serve as a networking event prior to the main summer assembly and consist of workshops, lectures, appropriate to the chosen theme and context. In addition to the various meetings and assemblies, EASA also organizes many other events as exhibitions, competitions, design charettes, exchanges throughout the year.
LEGAR FRAMEWORK EASA, from the outset, has always acted as an organization that takes on a new legal form every year, in the country in which the Assembly is held. For this reason, it is the responsibility of the host country to organise the Assembly, co-ordinate the EASA activities and perform the selection of the Assembly’s participants for that year... The National Contacts meetings act as an important decision instrument for the organization. These meetings take place at least twice a year: during the summer Assemblies and during the autumn INCMs.The ‘ASAMBLEA EUROPEA DE ESTUDIANTES DE ARQUITECTURA - EASA ESPAÑA 2011’ is the legal body for organizing easa011, it is legally constituted in Spain as a non-profit youth association. WHERE will it be held? IN SPAIN FOR THE FIRST TIME IN HISTORY The easa011 organization, that will take place during the summer of 2011, is being co-ordinated by a group of 15 people, students of architecture coming from different Spanish universities and young graduates in co-operation with interested tutors and professionals. Spain has been successfully elected as the organizing country in 2011, after bidding with an official proposal at the INCM [Intermediate National Contacts Meeting], the EASA international committee composed by members from more than 40 European countries, in October 2009 in Liechtenstein. EASA Spain has worked for many years with the support of the Polytechnic University of Valencia, where it headquarters are based. EASA011 will be held in Cadiz. The theme of this Assembly deals with the misconfiguration of the natural landscape along the Spanish coast. Cadiz is a great example that reflects the different ways of constructing the coast. The great contrast between new and old town, different ways to build and enjoy the city make it a perfect laboratory for studying and researching about this theme.

“If you invite me, I will come to EASA in Spain”
Rychard Murphy
1st EASA organizers
CADIZ Cadiz, the oldest western city, throughout the centuries has been one of the cities that has experienced more changes, a fact that is noticeable in its urban pattern. The Andalusian coast, as with the rest of the Spanish coast, has experienced huge changes throughout the last decades due to the tourist boom in Spain. These changes are visible in all the regions with different intensity. However it is not the city of Cadiz itself where these occurrences have developed to the fullest, due to its strategical location, but in the southern part of the area as well as in many coastal parts of Cadiz where the holiday neighbourhoods express a violent relation with the environment. Inkeeping with the theme of urban character, easa011 proposes to participate and work inside the city through workshops developing alternatives to urban problems at a practical and theoretical level during the two weeks of the Assembly. Regarding the venues for the Assembly, the team have already confirmed one place to host the event. The School “Campo del Sur” has every installation to cover EASA needs. In addition to this, there is a number of spaces available in which to develop the different workshops: ‘Santa Catalina’ fortress, ‘La Candelaria’ fortress and a building that belongs to the University and City Hall of Cadiz. the THEME Every year EASA is held in a different European city and the organizers choose a theme that constitutes the connecting thread to guide the whole Assembly. This theme is the inspiration for the workshops and it is supported by lectures, excursions and events in order to provide a better understanding of the surrounding reality. For easa011, the organizing team has developed the theme deCOASTruction. The coined term represents in a simple way the theoretical and geographic principles we want to transmit: deconstruction in the coast. With this new term, we want to express to all the European participants a reality that is particular to Spain and different from their countries of origin. We want to show from an urban, architectonic and objective perspective the development experienced in Spain from the 1960’s until today and the arrival of the welfare state, along with the consequences that these phenomena have had on the Spanish coast. We understand deconstruction in the coast as an urban concern, as a landscape concern that affects the land structures, as a disaster that produces bodies dependent on infrastructure, as a legal conflict, etc. Nevertheless we should not forget that there are also some poignant examples of good design in relation with the environment. For these these reasons, the workshops will focus on this reality by producing theoretical and practical works developed by all the participants in the Assembly.

the WORKSHOPS The workshops which develop throughout the two-week event constitute the backbone of the Assembly. Through these material and theoretical explorations, solutions to problems are provided at a local and regional level, by creating productions that will be part of the city as a footprint of the event, always looking for a dialogue with the surroundings and the theme. This dialogue will be achieved through 5 workshop groups. Through making this division we intend to provide a good understanding of the theme and location by the tutors. The 5 subgroups are provided as theoretical and abstract conditions looking to increase the tutors’ and participants’ creativity. The workshops will be constructive, theoretical or compound; and they will be selected by the organizers and other professionals from all the submitted proposals. The workshop proposals are issued by graduates from all over Europe and will be studied by the easa011 organizing team, who will then decide which workshops will be held in the Assembly, based on a certain criteria that takes into consideration aspects such as the interest of the project, the relationship with the theme, the number of participants needed and the feasibility to be completed in the two week period of the Assembly. The selected workshops will be exposed to the participants on the first day of the Assembly and then the participants will be able to enrol in a certain workshop during the workshop fair. The workshops are, in tandem with other activities, the core of the Assembly, as they showcase the work of all the participants over the 15 days event.

SUB-THEMES -PARA-SITES: These workshops will deal with the concept of parasitizing and its different form and scales. It
is intended that some theoretical and constructive activities will arise, exposing realities, reflecting the assembly itself, and the city. Moreover the double meaning of the word is aimed to encourage different understandings: parasites and para-sites
-TRADITIONAL INNOVATIONS: This sub-topic intends to encourage a fresh perspective to the concept of
tradition and innovation, as a key concept for a logic and sustainable development. We aim this workshops to work on concepts as identity, tradition, culture evolution, gastronomy, traditional systems (irrigation channels, aqueducts, clay works), etc.
-OCCUPATION: Inside this sub-theme, we intend to gather everything linked to locating the Assembly in a precise place by occupying a non permanent location. At the same time, we want to work in the city to detect its defects, proposing solutions of reusing, habitation, openness to the city, temporary or spontaneous spaces, local actions and rehabilitation of abandoned buildings. -DELIRIOUS SPAIN: Through para-phrasing one of the most influential XXth century architecture novels, we
want to cement the workshops with a strong dialogue with Spanish traditions, famous outside our borders. We propose some inputs to guide the thoughts we want to promote in this group: ways of living (timetables and habits), Marina d’Or, Spain as a melting pot of cultures, city as layers of history and the de-contextualiziation of cultural elements.
-WORKING ON THE EDGE: We propose this category using the concept of ‘limit’ coming from the geographic
location of the event - the limit of the peninsula, but also the limit of Europe; a physical and a psychological limit that comes along with phenomenon that are inherent to the idea of urban and architectonic limits-expansion and contraction, horizontal and vertical limits, frontier, limit, coast, intersection, laws, etc

the EVENTS LECTURES The lectures held in EASA always serve as a significant contribution to the understanding of the theme and a perfect opportunity to meet architects from the country where the Assembly takes place. The selection of the lecturers is intended to keep a balance between internationally recognized architects and emergent local professionals. Often on many occasions, lectures are given by veteran members of the organization, taking into consideration their professional career and their contributions to the Assembly in previous years. This year we will organise the deCOASTrucion series, which will deal with the theme of the Assembly showing us the situation of the coasts of other countries like Italy, Lebanon and Bahrain, with experts in the field. As well we will count with four internationally renowned architects that will come to talk about their work. EASA is, by definition, a cultural experience at a European scale. Due to the invaluable networks it provides, it is frequent to involve companies and institutions that are relevant for its educative character or its cultural program and can represent an interesting input to the Assembly. EASA once again tries to open towards the surroundings with the intention of showing the participants the characteristics of the country.

PRECEDING COMPETITION Over the last few years, prior to the main summer assembly, an international competition aiming for workshops related to the theme is announced in order to select the workshops that will take place during the summer Assembly. The final decision will be made by a panel composed by professors and members of EASA. From all of the submissions, 20-25 successful proposals are selected to be run during the assembly. All constructive workshops will be meticulously revised by a team of architects to be constructed during the assembly. In easa011 Spain, in order to attract students from all over Spain and push forward the relation between the theme and proposals, 5 competitions will be run in accordance with each one of the proposed subtopics.
FINA EXHIBITION Every year, the last day of the Assembly is used to exhibit to all the participants, architects, artists, students and other collectives interested, the results of each one of the workshops. During this exhibition, tutors and participants from every workshop will perform a presentation using presentations, videos, pictures, etc. In addition to that, the easaDAY will be take place showcasing the results of each workshop to the public across venues in the city.
FINAL REPORT After the end of each EASA, the result of all the activities [constructive workshops, lectures, theoretical projects, exhibitions, etc] are gathered and published in a special edition. The final report is published for the participants, involved institutions and for a wide public of architects, students, professionals and artists. This final report is also useful to enrich the EASA archive, and will serve as a useful manual for future organizing teams at future summer assemblies. EASA_011

support EASA sponsor opportunities Within the architectural realm of Spain, easa011 will be an event of massive scale with almost no precedent. Interest in the event is high, through both our own industry and networks and through the natural magnetism of the event itself. The assembly will be watched over with much interest from those not directly involved, and any association with the assembly will offer potential sponsors an opportunity at positive promotion amongst the architectural, construction and artistic societies in Spain. Ultimately EASA is always a very enjoyable event, always remembered fondly by all involved, and to get behind this assembly is to associate yourselves with positive memories amongst literally hundreds of future and budding professionals in what is a highly influential professional body across Europe. As an organization we have been doing our utmost to promote awareness of the assembly across the country. Presentations have and will be given to universities located all across the country. Our final exhibition, showcasing the fruits of the assembly as well as promotional information about the sponsors will travel the country. In the months after the event we will create our final report which will be sent out to national contacts in over forty countries, offering your company exposure to students all over Europe. easa011 has already been featured in the local and national press. Furthermore, television, architectural press and newspapers will be covering the event in the future. As well as this, a documentary will be produced to be projected in European universities and television, as for past editions of EASA. We would like to inform you of the invaluable impact that sponsoring EASA has at a local, national and European level.
