This project was planned and designed by the architecture team of DSP Design Associates, where I worked as an architect as well as sustainable designer and worked on proposing sustainable strategies for the project. This project was internationally accepted and was shortlisted in the experimental category of the World Architecture Festival in 2017. Biomimicry was explored for this project, taking inspiration from the nature. The smallest element was considered: Leaf. Modular and Cohesive nature of leaf was taken as inspiration for the structural Design concept.

The project design was considered from different conceptual angles such as the ying and yang nature representing represents the ‘Way of Nature symbolizing balance and the diagrid structure of a leaf: Modular and Cohesive nature of leaf was taken as inspiration for the structural Design concept.

SECTION An important part of the process was utilization of sustainable passive strategies which were used to arrive at the final design for the project. This involved analysis of shading devices was done to arrive at the perfect composition of the shading devices to be used for different facades. After this, a daylight analysis was also performed to see the effect of orientation, shading devices on the floor plate. It was ensured that the workspaces next to the core would receive optimum daylight. Simulation results show thaat more than 80% of the floor-plate receives a minimum of 300 lux throughout the year. Another element is introducing green corridors as cencept of vertical gardens was explored.

This project was completed at Architectural Association. All the work in this project is a part of group work. Towards the Northeast end of a lane called Brick lane is a quaint site known as ‘Fleet Street Hill’ which is the chosen site. The site is used as nomadic community gardens. The figures represents the neighbourhood around the site (Landuse plan). It also shows onsite activities which reflects the vibrant culture of the nomadic gardens on site (Images in the rightside). The proposal for the site is in the form of upcoming mixed use project which comprises of apartments and commercial mixed use in the form of market. with sustainaing the artistic characteristic of the place.

The diagrams on the left shows the process of massing of different spaces. In order to make the project sustainable, interplay of best orientation for different spaces was considered. Due to orientation, benifits such as optimum daylight, reduced in noise levels was achieved. In order to keep the temperatures in check and have comfortable conditions for the occupants, compactness was increased. This schematic concept of the proposal shows the concept which reflects the life of the occupants activities at the project site, which were again an important part of the designing. The activities also helped in formulating the thermal and daylight performance of each space.

DAYLIGHT STUDIES
The objective of designing the project with respect to daylight was to provide optimum daylight: 300Lux in all the spaces (minimum requirement), The bedrooms are designed to receive adequate daylight in the mornings and in the summer even towards the evenings to optimize on the daylight received as these are the times when the occupants use the bedrooms. Most of the site is open to public access, with paths leading towards semi open spaces such as the amphitheatre, fleet street hill market, outdoor cafe, graffiti and art display areas, communal gardens and outdoor sports area.

The best spots were chosen for different public activities, hence providing them thermal comfort. Areas which have higher wind velocity have been provided with wind breakers such as retractable canopies, pergolas and trees to reduce wind speed.

Impact of orientation on thermal performance as orientation adversely impacted thermal and visual performance of our term one precedent. Through this we can conclude that an effective way to increase thermal performance would be to make the building air-tight through the fabric. The outdoor microclimatic generated due to the form and its subsequent impact on the outdoor comfort of the public. The seasonal adaptability of the form was key in our design of the outdoor space-site condition’s urban plaza were relatively under utilised. Thus adopting features like retractable canopies, buffering trees and microclimate informed design, spaces that are comfortable throughout the year can be generated.

The site is accessible by expressway highway, which is 5minutes away from it, making it ideal from investment point of view for offices as well as its proximity to the upcoming residential societies making it suitable for its commercial usuability. The project has 3 types of building blocks, Block A and B has office units and Block C has restaurants and retail units making it a perfect for office goers and the people living close to the project which is one of the aim of mixed use projects to reduce the time and distance between different functional spaces.
Block B has office suites in the form of floor plates which can be owned by small firms, accompanied by terraces making it appear aesthetically appealing.

DESIGN CONCEPT
Amalgamation of linear and curvilinear forms (organic forms) in order to create a sense of harmony. Curvilinear forms includes the pathways, landscaped portion as well as the water bodies and linear forms contains the buildng blocks (apart from Block- B) appears aesthetically appealing. Prevailing Wind Direction is from North West to South East. Sun Direction had been considered while orienting the building blocks as can be seen in the Climatic Analysis Figure.

Hierarchy of Buildings was considered an important part of the concept. This arrangement helps in shading the smaller blocks and it also appears interesting and entire project can be seen if someone is standing close to Block-C, creating an imaginary focal point.

The Business Center (Block-A) was designed and tilted at an angle of 45° which prevents major portion of the building from solar radiation from south and south west directions at the same time allows ample opportunity for cross ventilation.

There are various water bodies that have been used in different parts of the project which helps in in cooling the environment. The shade trees also aid in lowering the temperature of the atmosphere at the same time, it helps in shading the buildingBlock-A on the south and wouth west directions and prevents the facades from the solar radiation and glare problem.

A Commercial Mixed Use Project which is an amalgamation of office spaces with retail spaces with well thought design solutions based on the concept of sustainability. By the combination of different elements such as orientation of the buildings, positioning the water bodies as well as green spaces takes the project towards sustainability.

This thesis project was a great learning experience in knowing how to experiment with different kinds of forms at the same time how to incorporate different sustainable elements to create a healthy, comfortable environment by providing cool environments with using extensive kinds of landscaping elements which also helps in reducing pollution and noise which would be a major concern in the future around the area according to site context.

This project was done during my internship in the seventh term of the Undergraduate Studies. The entire project was performed in the group of Artichitects and the interns. It was a great learning experience as it helped me during my final thesis of my Bachelors.

The project is very connected through several roads: Tributary roads connection housing, institutions and office complex 12m wide. Major office traffic up and down will be from this road as this road leads to proposed Metro line and its 40m wide. Road from old Raipur city 40 m wide. The diagrams shows the site plan with traffic in the site and individual blocks highlighted.

Conceptual Section Ground floor is public space integrating entrance lobby, shops, banks, multipurpose hall and places to eat, with café seating extending into landscaped plaza. Lobby at ground floor will make powerful statement in terms of scale and finishes.

Auditorium / multipurpose hall is placed on south west side of the plot as it will be occasionally used, has separate entry exit gates from landscaped Road on west side of plot, becomes a part of public space and enough space outside the multi-purpose halls for the visitors to spill out and it is centrally located for the offices spaces on both sides of landscaped road. The building skeleton is comprised of 8m x8m column grid. This grid pattern helps in providing optimum modules for office space yet keeping the cost of construction low. Orientation of the building for maximum light and ventilation. Ample wind flow from west to east direction. Conceptual Section shows the placement of different spaces in different towers and the blowup shows a view of the open theatre which reflects the importance of interactive spaces in the project.

The project is able to create panoramic landscaped view from all sides of building. A visitor will find convenient parking and standing space close to front door. This was the dissertation project which was completed at Architectural Association. The objective of the research was to propose design guidelines for London Office Buildings. This was done on the basis of Literature Available on the office buildings in London, identification of problems based on Literature and Fieldwork which was conducted at an office building: Chapman BDSP. The problems identified were Improper Daylight Levels, Glare and Fluctuation of temperatures at different zones of the workspaces which caused uncomfortable environment for the office goers. These problems were tackled during the analysis process which helped in arriving at the design guildlines for the office buildings.

The analysis started with the Daylight Studies, whose results helped in identify which strategies are suitable for optimum daylight levels in the workspace by reducing glare and uneven distribution of daylight levels in the workspace. Test results helped in identifying that shading devices would be best suitable for each of the orientation (Overhangs on North,East, Horizontal Shading Devices on South and Vertical Shading Devices on the West), it also showed that when the shading devices are combined with blinds, it helps in distributing the daylight and reducing glare substantially. It was also found that if the glazing area (Window to Wall ratio) is reduced, the daylight levels optimised more (30% on North and South and 20% for East and West). In order to have comfortable workspaces: thermal comfort, it was found, if the building envelope is improved: Low thermal Mass to High thermal Mass materials with better glass can improve the temperatures massively in workspaces. In order to reduce overheating during the summers, night ventilation (combined with high thermal mass) helps in keeping comfortable environments. For winters, when themal mass with blinds are used, it helps in keeping temperatures warmer in the daytime.

On the basis of the results, a different layout of the workspace can be used, keeping the core in the center, it will help in keeping better daylight levels.
