The calculator is fun way for children to learn arithmetic through play. You will need small tyres, 2” 3mm mild steel pipe and some rebar. You will also need to cement the calculator into the ground. Make sure you have a 1.5 metres of space around the calculator.

How to build 1. Weld the frame adding rebar to separate the tyres. 2. Thread on the tyres. 3. Dig the foundations. 4. Before cementing in the frame sand and paint with undercoat the section of metal

that will be going in the foundation. 5. Place in the frame fill the rest of the hole with concrete. 6. On the 1st, 3rd, 5th and 6th tyres, paint the numbers 0-9. On the 2nd tyre, paint + - x ÷,

spacing them evenly. On the 4th tyre, paint an = sign. 7. Drill or cut drainage holes all around each tyre. More than one will be needed

because the tyres can end up in many positions. As you’re looking at the tyres, cut or drill a hole on the bottom as you’re looking at each number. That way no matter what number the tyres ends up on, there will be a drainage hole. 8. Paint the rest of the frame
