New 4-star hotel to open by 2020 in Castro Marim

Outrage mounts over “unacceptable” and “chaotic state” of EN125

T

he Portuguese government is under fire again due to mounting criticism over the “unacceptable” and “chaotic state” of the Algarve’s EN125 road between Olhão and Vila Real de Santo António. After Castro Marim mayor Francisco Amaral said he was thinking of asking President Marcelo for help to pressure the government, now PSD MPs in the Algarve are urging state officials to deal with the “unacceptable situation”. MP Cristóvão Norte says some parts of the road are in such bad condition that they are barely usable, adding that it is “incomprehensible” how the government has allowed the EN125 to reach this state. The government, on the other hand, has always defended itself by saying the case is being held up by the Court of Auditors. But while drivers wait for the bureaucratic

thumbs up, they are faced on a daily basis with a road that is “a complete chaos”. A civic movement (Movimento de Cidadania dos Utentes da EN125 – Sotavento) has already been created to pressure the government into doing something. “It is impossible to dodge the potholes as there are so many of them,” Lucinda Martelo, one of the members of the movement, told Correio da Manhã. António Fernandes, another driver who has joined the movement, says that he and many others have to change their vehicle’s tyres every year-and-a-half as the situation has become “so bad”. “We want to say ‘enough’ once and for all. We want all authorities involved to shed their party colours and come together to move forward with the works because the situation is critical,” added Hugo Pena.

four-star hotel boasting 44 rooms with “impressive views” of the Guadiana River is planned for the eastern Algarve town of Castro Marim and should open by 2020. The €2.5 million project was unveiled during a ‘fam trip’ for reporters and tour operators last month. The hotel will be the first to open in the heart of the small town and will be brought to life by the same people who own Hotel Apolo in the neighbouring town of Vila Real de Santo António (VRSA). Nuno Vasques, general manager of Hotel Apolo, told reporters the hotel will feature 44 rooms and will be inspired by the “authenticity” of Castro Marim. The hotel will be tailor-built to suit the characteristics of a small rural town like Castro Marim, as the family that is promoting the project is from the town. “We feel like Castro Marim is in a golden triangle,” said Vasques, adding that the town is perfect for holidaymakers seeking culture, nature and even a beach, which is “just five minutes away” from the town. The hotel will be built on a plot of land near a local playground. All rooms will face the Guadiana River and Sapal nature reserve. The project follows a public tender launched by Castro Marim council in 2017 for the construction of a hotel in the town. At the time, local mayor Francisco Amaral said that it “made total sense” for Castro Marim to have a hotel as the borough had several projects underway to build cycle routes linking the area to VRSA and the Sapal nature reserve. Although the concept for the hotel is already established, Vasques said that the architectural project is still to be created. Locals will also be invited to pitch ideas for the name of the hotel. “For now, we’re simply calling it the Castro Marim hotel.”

efore you get into what antioxidants are, you need to know what an oxidizer is. Free radicals are unstable and very reactive molecules that steal electrons from other molecules (oxidation). This process results in the formation of more free radicals. Without an antioxidant to stop this chain reaction, it could continue to such an extent that all molecules were oxidized. Oxidation can cause cell death, which can lead to many diseases and physical imbalances. Antioxidants are substances that prevent the formation of free radicals in the body that favor cell aging and the onset of diseases such as cancer. Thus, antioxidants combat premature aging, help in cell regeneration and help prevent disease. Antioxidants can be found in natural foods and in vitamin and mineral supplements. However, antioxidant supplements, as well as any other supplementation, should be advised by a qualified health professional. The adequate consumption of antioxidants protects the body from the

The main antioxidants in foods are vitamin A, C, E, flavonoids, carotenoids, lycopene, omega-3 and selenium. The Eastern Algarve resort of Monte Gordo has seen extensive work being completed on a new beach walkway access, costing an incredible â‚Ź1 million.

T

he project, backed by Algarve environment agency APA and Vila Real do Santo AntĂłnio council, will see the impressive wooden structure stretch from Monte Gordo to Vila Real and be complete by May 2018, in time for the summer season. It is designed to link up all beach infrastructures and with brand new buildings set to open with large sun terraces as well as new play and recreational areas, the council is also keeping some of the traditional fishing boats and huts still used by the local fisherman. Situated on one of the finest beaches of the Eastern Algarve, Monte Gordo has been transformed from the once small fishing village into a modern and

popular resort town. During the summer It has a buzzing atmosphere, attracting a wide selection of international visitors. Now a modern beach resort, the beach is simply stunning, with miles of golden sands, which are lapped by clean and safe sea waters. In the town, there is a diverse selection of restaurants catering for every cuisine and taste, while the nightlife is relaxed and social, focused around late-night bars and restaurants. Monte Gordo’s calm ambience makes it ideal for families and, as the town had been primarily aimed for Portuguese tourists, it offers exceptional value for money. A short train ride away is the beautiful historic town of Tavira, and close by are the castles of Castro Marim, and at the Spanish border, just a few kilometers

away is Vila Real de Santo Antรณnio which opens out onto the Guadiana river. To the east of Monte Gordo is the largest forest of the Algarve, the Mata Nacional da Dunas Litorais de Vila Real de Santo Antonio. This natural park has a unique ecosystem of pine forests that cover the sand dunes of the region and is the perfect place to escape the summer crowds as there are shaded footpaths across the 440 hectares of forest. Take a walk through the forest or cycle along the miles off quiet paths and roads. The main attraction is the wonderful

12

sandy beach that extends 14km from the town of Altura to the mouth of the Guadiana river and unlike the western Algarve, with its steep cliffs, Monte Gordo is on the same level as the town which makes access very easy for visitors. As the beach is long and wide there is always plenty of space for everyone. A lively holiday atmosphere, with the Casino and plenty of restaurants and bars, as well as the many golf courses located nearby Monte Gordo is well worth a visit. Take in the amazing East Algarve coastline with a long walk off the beachfront, a definite must see.

Copos & Petiscos

Introducing a traditionl Portuguese restaurant, now run by experienced restauranteurs Doris and Pierre.

L

ast month we had the pleasure of meeting Pierre and Doris, owners of the recently opened restaurant Copos and Petiscos in Tavira, a two minute walk from the Military bridge, opposite the Talibriga Bar. Doris, originally from Tour in France and Pierre from Perpignan lived in Guadeloupe in the French West Indies for 10 years, then for 13 years in New Caledonia, a French island near Australia. During this time they ran restaurants, and obviously their passion for producing and serving great food continues. They have now both worked in the restaurant trade for forty years. Their latest venture began when they moved to Portugal on the 5th March last year. After a brief stint in Santa Lucia, the couple then found the restaurant Copos and Petiscos, a very intimate, established restaurant (for over 30 years) with 30 places inside and 6 on the terrace, offering great summer alfresco dining. The concept for Copos & Petiscos was to keep it 'Portuguese', but introduce their own style; modern Portuguese food with a very special French touch. Chef Pierre has a very basic theory; create a simple menu with the best products. Good ingredients make good food! We are very lucky here in the Algarve to have the best ingredients readily available, the freshest fish, an excellent selection of meat, and of course an abundance of vegetables. Copos & Petiscos opened its doors on the 1st December 2017. All food is made in the restaurant by Pierre, including the stunning sweets. In the first 4 months of working they have welcomed a complete mix of clients. They have a large selection of Portuguese wines and a full bar, with great ambient 'blues' playing in the background. Doris and Pierre have a real love for what they do, but in order to do this you have to 'love people and want to make clients happy'. Pierre always makes time to speak to his clients to firstly make sure they are happy and also to listen and take note of any comments and suggestions.

We were lucky enough to try some of the excellent food, but don't take our word for it. Trip advisor have over 100 comments, here are just a few: Brilliant restaurant and great food "We came across this restaurant walking around Tavira and had a brilliant meal. The menu is a mixture of Portuguese and French cooking, with brilliant flavours! The Tavira Oyster which we had as an hor d'oeuvre was amazing. A lovely place, very attentive and friendly service. We will definitely be visiting again..." Delicious and Delightful! Amazing Food! We visited this wonderful little restaurant during our five day stay in Tavira in early February. From the moment we were seated at our table and treated to a wild oyster appetizer, our hosts gave us a first class restaurant treatment. We had wanted to try all the unusual dining treats of the Algarve and asked if

16

we could try octopus. Ours was baked to a tender perfection with garlic and butter, accompanied by tender potatoes and a baked tomato. Each bite melted in our mouths. To complete our meal, we had a dark chocolate cake with chocolate sauce and whipped cream. It was delectable. This is a new restaurant to Tavira and definitely worth checking out. This entire meal cost us 20 euros.. there were cheaper items and more expensive ones. It was a delightful alternative to a restaurant which was closed. Highly recommend.. not expensive and wonderful food! Visit Copos and Petiscos at Rua Poeta Emiliano da Costa 6, Tavira 8800-357, Portugal Telephone +351 916 562 645

Daniel Kemish

Local singer Daniel hopes to officially launch in his new Album this May in Tavira

D

aniel Kemish is a British Born Americana/Folk Singer and one of those artists whose voice cuts straight to the core. His parents moved to a small village just outside of Tavira when Daniel was just 3 years old. He went to his local school in Marco where there were just 5 pupils in years 1-4. Since then he has spent all his life living between the U.K. and Tavira. Daniel's musical influences come from

18

artists such as David Ramirez, Ryan Bingham, American country singer Jason Isbell, Chris Stapleton and Jack Savoretti. He also found inspiration from well know artists such as Kris Kristofferson and Willy Nelson. His songs and stage presence command the attention of the audience, be it an intimate solo performance or full band setup. Daniel started performing in 2006 around small bars and clubs in the UK. One day in 2011 he decided he was fed up with performing other peoples songs and wanted to create something for himself. He set about writing, but struggled with inspiration until he returned to his childhood home in Portugal. In 2013 and 2014 he self released 2 EP’s (in Duo Format) with his Double Bass player Jean Christian Houde. In 2015 Daniel took a trip back to Nashville and set about recording his debut album at Ocean Way Studios.

“Fools & Money” was released in March 2016 followed by a 34 date UK Tour with his band. Since then he has toured extensively, completing 3 other tours of Europe and one in America, covering over 100,000km’s mostly solo. On the 24th January 2017 Daniel spent one month alone in a mountain hut in Austria, he desired complete solitude in composing and writing material for his 2nd studio album. Having no electricity/ running water or phones, and only a wood stove for heating/cooking and melting snow allowed Daniel to get back to real basics of song writing and create an album that was more personal to himself. The results are incredible and Daniel returned with a new sound and style that truly shows he has matured as both a songwriter and performer. 2018 is set to be a massive year for the young Singer/Songwriter; he has a new album out at the end of May, a European tour kicking off early June and a huge urge to get back on the road and perform his newly penned songs. This is one of the true great Artists that are still doing it the honest way. Daniel hopes to launch his new Album with a gig in Tavira outside radio station 'Radio Gilao'! Fingers crossed and watch this space for details next month!

T

he month of March was the wettest for almost 20 years and brought us lots of rain, stormy weather and tornados. Most of us are looking forward to better weather conditions in April. Spring time is probably one of the best seasons of the year to be in the Algarve with blossoming wild flowers everywhere. Cliff tops along the coast line and the rolling hills in the countryside are carpeted by a wide variety of wild and often rare flowers. This is also the time for the annual spring clean, which is especially important for those who want to sell their property. A well presented and maintained house sells quicker and is more likely to achieve a higher price. If you are not living here or are unable to do this yourself, there are companies who can assist you with this. In addition to the spring clean and the removal of all clutter, take a good, hard look at the outside of your property. We all know curb appeal is important. Tidy up the gardens where needed, paint/ repair the fence, remove old building materials and clutter. The outside wood work should be in good condition and if this is not the case, I’m afraid you should get it repaired and repainted. Try to spruce up the garden the day prior to the viewing. The market is buoyant, so this can be the year that you succeed in selling your property. If you own a property in the countryside you should pay particular attention to the cleaning of land in order to reduce the risk of fire. Following last years devastating wild fires the government has made changes in law and added new regulations to help to prevent and deal with fires in the future. Owners are obliged to clean the land within 50 meters from their house, meaning they need to clean up the bushes and trees. You should apply a healthy dose of common sense, especially if you have a landscaped garden with ornamental shrubs and trees surrounding your home, as a well irrigated and maintained garden has less change of becoming a fire hazard. Creating a firebreak between the landscaped garden and the rest of the land is important. In general, trees should be pruned up to 50% of the height with a maximum of 4 meters from the ground; shrubs need to be no higher than 50 centimeters. When you have ornamental trees in your garden, you may not want to prune some trees along the government guidelines. Just make sure that dead wood and debris is removed and no dry shrubs are underneath the tree. In the countryside you find many, protected by law, carob trees which if left to themselves grow long sprawling branches reaching the ground. These branches should be pruned as part of the fire prevention.

Spay a Stray

S

StreetLife Animal Sterilisation Programme hits the Eastern Algarve streets with a flying start

treetLife is a relatively new initiative, launched on the 1st September 2017, by Graeme and Linda Cree and a group of animal lovers who want to reduce the number of stray and abandoned dogs in the East Algarve (Faro, Loulé, Olhão, São Bras, Tavira, Moncarapacho, Fuseta, Estoi and down to the Spanish border) through a programme of sterilisations. There are several shelters across the Algarve and they are all overflowing with abandoned dogs, many of which come from local families. Litters of puppies from unsterilised pets are a particular problem because many pet owners often prefer to dump them in waste bins or at shelters to get rid of the problem rather than sterilise. A lot of families are on low income and if it is a case of feeding their children or sterilising their dogs then it’s obvious what they are going to do. This is where StreetLife helps by subsidising the cost of sterilisations for the less well off. Fund-raising groups and volunteers do a great job supporting the shelters, but StreetLife’s aim is to try to reduce the number of litters in the first place, through a programme of sterilisation of both pets and stray dogs. There are similar organisations elsewhere in Portugal, but StreetLife decided it wanted to focus on the East Algarve and on dogs, where little is being done. StreetLife’s Goals & Aspirations are to reduce the stray and abandoned dog population in the East Algarve through an Animal Sterilisation Programme. This approach has worked in other countries

30

(Graeme and Linda previously worked on a similar programme with a shelter in Goa, India) and it is proven to reduce the number of strays and unwanted litters. StreetLife supports local pet owners who may not have the funds to pay for sterilisation, as well as local dog shelters who may need additional funding for sterilisations. StreetLife liaises with the local municipal kennels and private shelters to see if they can improve the stray dog situation by working together. StreetLife works with local vets to persuade them to support StreetLife programmes, hopefully with preferential rates! StreetLife promotes the many benefits of sterilisation of pets. Did you know? ONE unsterilised female dog and her mate, all of their litters, plus their offspring (if none are sterilised or die), adds up to 50,000 dogs in 7 years. That’s a lot of potentially unwanted puppies and strays. ONE sterilisation could stop this! What has StreetLife achieved in the last six months? StreetLife was launched in September 2017 with their “Zip for a Snip” fund raiser, with 28 enthusiastic “Zippers” and animal lovers zipping across the Guadiana River to help raise funds for StreetLife by getting sponsors. If that wasn’t enough, another 45 supporters joined them all for lunch. Since then they haven’t looked back. To begin with it was a slow, often frustrating process, talking to local pet owners, trying to convince them it was the right thing to do to sterilise their pets. Many do not understand why StreetLife would want to help fund the procedure.

StreetLife’s first sterilisation took place on the 29th September 2017 - Nina. She had already had multiple litters and the owners thought she was in the early stages of pregnancy again. So they asked StreetLife for help with her sterilisation. Nina was sterilised and 12 unborn (& unwanted) puppies removed. A good start to the StreetLife Animal Sterilisation Programme. By the end of 2017, StreetLife had sterilised 9 dogs. By mid-March 2018, six months after their launch date, they had sterilised a further 25 dogs plus approval for funding had been given for another 12 dogs. A total of 46 dogs have either been sterilised to date or are in the pipeline. StreetLife is now receiving calls for help almost daily! How does it all work? A pet owner makes contact with StreetLife and someone from StreetLife arranges a home visit to assess their situation, say “hello” to their dog(s) and see what StreetLife can do to help. A simple form is completed detailing information about the pet owner and their dog(s). The owner is always asked to make a contribution to the sterilisation based on their circumstances and then StreetLife pays the difference. For example: the sterilisation could cost €100, the pet owner contributes €20 and StreetLife pays the balance of €80. The vet is always paid directly by StreetLife; no money is given to the pet owner. Transport to / from the vet is also available if necessary. How does StreetLife find dogs to sterilise? Posters have been put up in local shops and restaurants and many local vets who support StreetLife have posters on display. A good relationship

www.eastalgarvemag.com

Charity

is now building up with vets and quite often a vet will make contact and say they have a potential candidate for the StreetLife programme. Facebook social media is also helping to spread the word. Many of the younger generation use Facebook, they find out about StreetLife and then they tell their parents or grandparents about the sterilisation programme. Also pet owners who have been helped are telling their friends, family and neighbours – the best marketing tool possible! What’s next? The StreetLife Animal Sterilisation Programme constantly wants to increase its visibility and to work with other animal welfare associations in educating pet owners to understand that sterilisation must be the way forward. StreetLife intends to set up a regular “clinic” in association with the local Juntas, where pet owners can come and discuss sterilisations. They also would like to get involved with local schools, talking to children about caring for their pets and why it is so important to sterilise. It cannot be stressed enough that all the animal shelters are over populated— they are at saturation point and many of them cannot take a single extra dog. Puppies are being dumped like rubbish in bins—which is cruel and illegal! Dogs are also being abandoned on the streets, sometimes dogs that have been with their family for months / years—all because they have “outstayed their welcome”. Hunters dump their dogs because they no longer have a useful purpose. More and more dogs are being stolen / lost and dogs which are not microchipped and registered often get abandoned

www.eastalgarvemag.com

miles away from home and end up as strays. Recent changes in the law could mean pet owners will get fined if they do not look after their dogs properly but the reality of this is potentially low. There is so much that needs to be done to improve the life of animals in Portugal . . . progress is slow and it will take a few more generations before acceptable results are seen. Vets who currently work with the StreetLife Animal Sterilisation Programme include Vetcubo, Inemvet, Novavet, Tátápet, BVet, Centro Veterinário da Estação and we thank them for their support. Who else supports StreetLife? StreetLife works with local animal welfare organisations and groups including ADAPO and with volunteers from local animal shelters. We also liaise with similar organisations who carry out sterilisation programmes in other areas of the Algarve such as SOS Algarve Animals (Central Algarve) and APAA (Association for Protection of Animals in the Algarve – Alvor, Portimão, Silves area). More and more local suppliers are also helping where they can by promoting StreetLife, helping with donations / sponsorships / raffle prizes at fund raising events: Antonio’s Restaurante, Monterosa Olive Oil, Vila Monte Farm House, Escola do Turismo (Catering College) Faro, Caravela Restaurante, Pontos dos Amigos Restaurante and the Marina Hotel Olhão. Musicians like Vernon Delauney and Richard Bassett have donated their time for free at fund-raising events. Also afpop (Association for Foreign Residents & Visitors to Portugal www.afpop.com) EA members are very strong supporters of the StreetLife programme, Linda Cree

being the event organiser and main fund raiser. The list is growing daily. If you would like to support StreetLife please make contact. Donations: StreetLife can only exist through donations to fund the sterilisations, they do not have a money tree, they do not have a magic wand . . . they rely on the generosity and support of others. People like YOU! Every donation will help to make a difference to the life of a local dog and to the strays in our local neighborhood. THROUGHOUT THE YEAR THERE ARE REGULAR EVENTS TO RAISE FUNDS FOR STREETLIFE. Monthly StreetLife QuizWhiz Evenings – usually the second Saturday in the month at Pontos dos Amigos Restaurante. These evenings are organized by Brian & Christine Beckwith, two very dedicated StreetLife Volunteers. These events are becoming increasingly popular with 60+ QuizWhizzers attending each month. It is all light-hearted fun and very good value at around €10.00, which includes music, quiz, supper and 2 litres of house wine per table / team (maximum 6 per team). There is a league table and at the end of the year there will be a trophy awarded to the winning team at the StreetLife QuizWhiz Awards Night in September! This event is in the early stages of being organised but going by other events it will be very popular and successful . . . and maybe become a regular Annual Event. Book your places early and support this worthy cause. StreetLife is looking for StreetEyes. StreetEyes are volunteers who help StreetLife by looking for pet owners who may be interested in getting their dogs sterilised. There could be a neighbour’s pet near where you live which regularly produces litters because its owner cannot afford to have the animal sterilised. Talk with them give them a StreetLife flyer and help them to contact StreetLife. If you would like a flyer (available in English and Portuguese), please ask StreetLife. Also Wanted: StreetNurses: StreetLife is looking for people to be a temporary “StreetNurse” to look after a dog for two or three days post-op, to give food,

32

water and medication and to keep a watchful eye on it, before it is returned to its normal life. As you may know, all dogs need at least two or three day’s rest after a sterilisation operation. During this time, they usually need anti-inflammatory and/or antibiotic tablets two or three times a day, and a watchful eye to ensure they don’t try to scratch or overly-clean the wound. Usually, this is accomplished by keeping the dog indoors, or in a secure and clean area. After recovery, they can go back to running around in the bushes, rolling in the dust and mud, chasing rabbits – whatever they like to do. StreetLife stresses that this is just for a few days post-op; there is no intention to try to extend this commitment. Some of the dogs that StreetLife has lined up for sterilisation belong to people who work during the day and so cannot provide this watchful eye, or the dogs are street dogs who don’t have any “owner” as such, just someone who feeds them etc. The dog would be delivered to you usually late afternoon on the day of the operation (unless you would like to collect it from the vet yourself), along with the necessary meds and instructions. A few days later, at a mutually convenient time / place, the dog is handed back.

If you feel that you are able to help out in this way, or would like more information, please let StreetLife know. It may only have been six months since StreetLife was launched but they are certainly making a difference to the lives of many dogs (and their owners) in the East Algarve. StreetLife thanks every single person who has supported them to date and also thanks those of you who will support the StreetLife Animal Sterilisation Programme as a result of this article. If you would like to be kept up to date with StreetLife visit their Facebook page or email StreetLife and they will add you to their circulation list to receive updates and newsletters. Let’s work together to help our local community fix this problem. Served in dishes for the last 4500 years, the lettuce is one of the oldest cultivated vegetables.

L

ettuces in their various forms are the most important salad crops, easily available at anytime of the year since the development of varieties which can be grown under glass in winter. The heavy, crisp iceberg lettuces are more popular in America, and were developed to survive transport from California to the markets in the east. Looser, softer cabbage lettuces are more popular in Northern Europe. Cos lettuces, at their best in spring, are much grown in the eastern Mediterranean. In china the Celtuce, a variety with swollen crisp fleshy stalks, is widely grown for use sliced and stir-fried. ORIGIN All lettuces were developed from the wild species Lactuca serriola L. found wild in clearings in woods, rocky slopes and waste places from Asia and North Africa to northern Europe. It

34

is a winter annual, germinating in autumn, and forming rosettes of leaves which become very conspicuous on roadsides when they begin to flower in late summer, the stems reaching 2m in height. The leaves are often spiny and usually held in a vertical position. They are either obovate and entire, or deeply lobed. The small flowers are pale yellow, and the seeds grayish green. HISTORY Lettuces were grown by the Romans, but are thought to have been cultivated first by the ancient Egyptians in around 4500BC. Wall paintings in some Egyptian tombs are thought to represent a narrowly pointed form of Cos lettuce, though there are suggestions that the plant was first cultivated for the edible oil in its seeds, rather than as a salad. The wild species is horribly bitter even when young, and the selection of less bitter forms would have been one of the first actions of the

www.eastalgarvemag.com

Gardens

early cultivators of the crop as a salad. Bitterness is associated with the production of latex, the milky juice still found in the cultivated varieties when they bolt. Lettuce as a food plant was probably introduced to Britain by the Romans, who favoured the plant after it was said to have cured the Emperor Augustus. Their varieties needed blanching to make them less bitter. The earliest post-Roman mention in Britain is in Gerard’s Herball in 1597. He mentions eight varieties. Seeds were taken to America by the early settlers. Lettuces with firm hearts are only known with certainty from the sixteenth century onwards. Modern breeding has concentrated on resistance to disease and bolting in the common types, and on more fancy leaf shapes and colours such as red and curled. As readers of Beatrix Potter will know, lettuces are soporific. This property has been recognized since ancient

www.eastalgarvemag.com

times, and is mentioned by Hippocrates, who was born in Cos in 456 BC. The bitter latex was often used as a substitute for opium or laudanum. Dr A. Duncan of Edinburgh studied the effects of lettuce juice, which he called “lactucarium and in 1809 published a paper entitled An account of a method of preparing a soporific medicine from inspissated white juice of the common garden lettuce. CULTIVATION Lettuce requires a rich but well-drained soil, kept continually moist during the growing season. Premature drying out causes the lettuces to go to seed early, before they have developed their full size. The ideal soil is one in which manure or compost has been incorporated the previous autumn, but failing that the plants can be watered with a nitrogen rich fertilizer. Seed requires cool conditions to germinate, and may become

35

Gardens

dormant above 20ºC. Early spring and autumn crops are best sown in boxes indoors and then planted out a spacings suited to the variety, but late spring and summer crops are best sown in the position and then thinned. This is probably because they produce deeper root systems and are more tolerant of drought. PEST AND DISEASE Apart from the usual danger of slugs and snails, lettuces are particularly attacked by aphids and by cutworms. The lettuce root aphid (pemphigus bursarius) is the worst danger. The fat pale brown aphids crowd around the tap root and the plant grows poorly, goes yellowish and collapses in dry warm weather. The aphid is spread by ants, and often infects weeds such a sow thistles, several ornamental daisies and perennial vegetables like globe artichokes. It is thought to survive the winter on populars, where it breeds in the young leaf stalks before flying to the lettuces and other hosts in June. Making the worst months for attacks June, July, August and September. Other aphids affect the the leaves, and the main danger is that they can carry virus diseases. Modern breeding has produced varieties resistant to root aphid, and where root aphid has proved to be a problem, the varieties “Avoncrisp” and “Avondefiance”, or the aphistolerant variety “Debbie” can

36

be grown. Some strains of wild species Lactuca virosa have provided breeders with a useful source of resistance to these aphids. Cutworms, which are the caterpillers of various moths, can also be a nuisance. They eat into the root of the lettuce at ground level, and before they have been detected, the plant collapses, and the caterpillar has moved on. They are best controlled by going out with a tourch at night and searching around the base of the plants. The cutworms are brownish or greenish, fat and juicylooking and about 2cm long. A fierce watering in early june will also kill the young caterpillers, before they have been able to do any damage. Leatherjackets, the larvae of the daddy-long-legs or cranefly, are also sometimes troublesome, they can eat the roots but seldom kill the plants outright. Various mildews may also infect lettuces. The worst is grey mould or botrytis which affects plants outdoors in exceptionally wet and humid weather, and in winter lettuce grown under glass. Downy mildew, which affects the leaves, can also be a problem especially in the autumn, but again using a resistant variety will help. And although you can spray with a fungicide it is not usually worthwhile.

Rising Damp Gone Forever

O

ne of the worlds famous museums is the Heremitage Museum in St. Petersburg Russia ,admired by millions of visitors each year it needs lots of attention to keep the museum, its beautiful paintings and its structure up to date. Although from the outside it looks perfect, for over more then 200 years the museum suffered from a severe rising damp problem resulting in the need of replastering and repainting most of the walls each year, which doesn’t solve the problem. Also, because of all that humidity in the museum, the old paintings needed a lot of attention and treatment throughout the year to avoid the devastating effect humidity has on them. Around 18 years ago a German electrical engineer and 3 professors finished a 10 year long study and experimental fase, resulting in the development of a unit which is built specificly to eliminate rising damp in old and even new buildings. The unit gives magnetic pulses which change the polarity of the water molecules in the walls and floors, so that together with the negative loaded earth the water molecules are pushed down slowly until they sit underneath the foundation of the houses. Between 1 and 2,5 years this is achieved and while the unit keeps on giving the magnetic pulses the water molecules stay underneath the foundation and never come up again.

38

So after a very satisfied test installment in the Heremitage (see picture) 191 units are installed now, humidity is gone, no more dehumidifiers needed, no more yearly repairs on paint and plaster and all paintings now stay in a good shape because humidity (which is gone now) does not effect them anymore. A side effect of the installed unit (the size is only 20 cm x 20 cm and for houses up to 250 m2 usualy 1 unit is suficient) is that it not only eliminates the existing rising damp but it also will prevent rising damp occurring in the future, this is why especially in the Algarve, where many old and new houses suffer from rising damp, we are being asked more and more to install the system in houses just being built to avoid humidity problems in the future. HOW THE UNIT BECOMES A MONEY SAVER ● After the floors and the walls are dry, heating your house will save you 25 percent to 65 percent on your heating costs (dry walls and floors need much less energy to heat up) ● Many people try to tackle the rising damp by using dehumidifiers. They are in fact counter productive as they extract humidity from the air as well as from the walls and the floors causing both to get a bit dryer but only for them to suck up more humidity from the wet earth underneath the house, a vicious circle. Dehumidifiers are big energie consumers and only increase the rising damp

problem. With the unit fabricated in Germany, installed dehumidifiers become totally unnecessary. ● Instead of sometimes yearly repairs on the plaster and paint, after the house is dry , it is only needed once and then the house will stay dry for at least the next 35 years , so a new layer of paint every 15 years will be sufficient. OTHER BENEFITS The unit itself does not need any maintenace and represents a €10 yearly energy cost. There is a 20 year guarantee on the unit, however, proved by tests we know it will work at least 35 years (after this test in a time accelerating machine the unit still worked 100 percent). Also we have a moneyback guarantee if 3 years after installation humidity levels on the groundfloor exceeds the 3 percent level or the basement exceeds the 6,5 percent level. Many references are available from people who installed the system years ago, free control measurements are taken on a regular basis and people who want to find out more about the system can contact us for a free humidity survey. Last but not least, living in a house without all that hunidity is much better for our health and will avoid humidity related illnesses in the future. tel: 962435572 e-mail: contact@drymatportugal.com website: www.drymatportugal.com

12 things you should know about the IMI Tax

T

he first installment of the IMI 2017, which is due in April 2018 should have arrived in your post box already. This year the good news is that 15 out of 16 Algarvian municipalities, have maintained or lowered the tax and just Vila do Bispo has decided to increase it. In this article we will try to clarify some of the questions you may have concerning this property tax. What is the IMI? IMI (Imposto Municipal sobre Imóveis - Municipal Property Tax) is a tax on the taxable value of immovable property in Portugal. This tax came into force in 2003, replacing the Council Tax, and reverts to the respective municipalities. Who pays IMI? The taxpayer is the property owner as of 31st December of the previous year. This means that if you bought your property at the end of 2016, you will pay the IMI for the full year. Likewise, if you sold your property at the beginning of 2017, you will still need to pay the IMI this year, as it’s always related to the previous year. How to calculate the IMI? IMI is calculated based on the Tax Asset Value (VPT) attributed to the property to which is applied, a rate set annually by the municipality (VPT x IMI rate). The way the VPT is calculated varies. The VPT is calculated on the

1 2

basis of various factors such as the construction value per square meter gross floor area, location, quality and comfort and property age, updated every three years. What is the taxable value? The taxable value of buildings is its value determined by assessment according to the rules of the IMI Code. This value is registered in the land register. Who determines the IMI rates? The municipalities decide each year, which tax to apply in their council. This needs to bebetween 0.3 and 0.45% for buildings and 0.8% for plots (rustic property). Properties with tax domicile in "offshore"; are taxed at 7.5%, regardless of the type of property. What are the deadlines for the payment of the IMI? IMI is paid annually through a single billing document in April, if the tax is up to 250 euros. If the value is between 250 and 500 euros, you pay in two installments, 1st in April and 2nd in November. If the amount exceeds 500 euros, you pay in three installments (April, July and November). Please note that if you wish, you can pay the full amount in April, ask us how. What are the consequences of not paying the IMI on time? If you do not pay within the period specified in the collection document, you will pay interest on arrears. If the

non-payment persists your property can be seized. Where can the IMI be paid? IMI can be paid at the Tax Office, Post Office, at any ATM machine or through internet banking. If you wish, you can pay it in our office, using a Portuguese debit or credit card. Who is entitled to an IMI exemption? Owners whose annual income on IRS in the previous year does not exceed 15 295 euros are exempt from property tax, provided that the book value of the property does not exceed 66,500 euros. Also, if you bought your main residence and if the tax value of the property does not exceed 125.000€ and your yearly income does not exceed 153k, you can apply for a 3 year IMI exemption. These exemptions are recognized by the head of the local tax office for a period of three years. Since last year, the fact that the tax payer may have tax debts does not imply the loss of the right to this exemption. Am I entitled to a discount in the IMI due the number of children? Since 2016 the law considers the possibility of each municipality to offer a family discount based on the number of children in the household. It’s determined by each council and the maximum discounts are: 10%, 15% and 20%, for one, two or three (or more) children.

I am paying too much IMI, can I reduce my IMI bill? It may be possible to re-evaluate your property and reduce your tax liability. We have successfully submitted requests to the local tax departments to reduce the tax values of our clients’ properties, thereby saving many on their IMI property tax bills. However please note that any reassessment only takes effect on the following year, as you will only pay IMI for 2018, in 2019. Please note that if you did not receive your IMI bill, this could be because you have not submitted the tax return in 2016. In this case, please contact us to rectify the situation, avoiding interest or fines. Please feel free to visit us, if you need assistance with the payment: you can pay this and other taxes in our office, providing you have a Portuguese debit or credit card.

Larger estates on the other hand, do not receive the full tax relief – estates over £2 million have a smaller tax relief and those £2.2 million and above receive no tax relief. Despite the tax allowance, the government’s inheritance tax funds continue to swell. The reason behind this has a lot to do with people’s increasing value of assets – in particular, property. As house prices have risen, the number of estates that have fallen outside the governments “residential nil-rate band” have increased substantially. Currently residential property makes up a third of estates liable for inheritance tax. All the latest local sports news from Chris Wright.

pril could prove to be a defining moment for SC Olhanense as they endeavour to gain promotion to the Segunda Liga. With three games to go the Olhão based club know that their destiny is in their own hands with victories seeing them through to the play-offs. Wins against Castrense (1-0) and Moncarapachense (2-0) were a prelude to the top-of-thetable clash at home to arch-rivals SC Farense. Olhanense took an early lead through Stevy Okitokandjo but secondhalf goals from André Ceitil and a Jorge Ribeiro penalty gave the visitors a 2-1 win and the championship title. Olhanense

Executing the Chip and Run This months tip from Bradley Dye, assistant professional at Monte Rei Golf

M

astering the short game in golf is a key element to getting the ball close to the hole and lowering scores, and more importantly lowering that handicap. Chipping around a green can be a decision making nightmare, because you want the most consistent and concise way of getting the ball close to the hole. The chip and run golf shot is the safest and most consistent way to get the ball close to the hole when there are no hazards between you and the flag. For a right handed golfer: Setup: Narrow the stance down to just inside shoulder width and stand slightly closer to the ball, open your stance out to aid rotation of the upper body so your alignment isn’t parallel with the ball to target line.
