Two new air links announced for Faro Airport

hree new air links have been announced for Faro Airport – one of which will connect Faro to Cardiff, and the other two to Madrid and Barcelona. The Faro-Cardiff link will be launched in June by British low-cost airline Flybe. It will run three weekly flights on Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays. Tickets are already for sale, with prices ranging from £40-£60 (www.flybe.com) Flybe has said that it has also launched another 10 routes from Cardiff - to Belfast, Cork, Dublin, Düsseldorf, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Jersey, Munich, Milan (Malpensa), and Paris. Meantime, Spanish airline Air Nostrum will be resuming the Faro-Madrid air link, dropped in 2006, while Vueling will be flying to Barcelona. Flights will begin on June 1 to Madrid and on June 12 to Barcelona, and only

run during peak season. The last FaroMadrid and Faro-Barcelona flights will be on Sept 30 and 12, respectively. Air Nostrum will be offering three flights a week on Mondays, Fridays and Saturdays in June, part of July and Sept, while between July 22 and Sept 1 the flights will be on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. Tickets for the link, serviced by a 90seat Bombadier CRJ, are being sold for a range of prices starting at €55 (www.airnostrum.es). Vueling, on the other hand, will be flying twice a week on Tuesday and Saturday. Tickets are also available starting from €50 (www.vueling.com) Regional tourism boss Desidério Silva says the opening of these two routes to Spain “is great news” that the Algarve had been waiting for for the last 10 years.

HOMEOPATHY H Now available in Fisioclube.

omeopathic remedies are derived from substances that come from plants, minerals, or animals, such as red onion, arnica (mountain herb), crushed whole bees, white arsenic, poison ivy, belladonna (deadly nightshade), and stinging nettle. Homeopathic remedies are often formulated as sugar pellets to be placed under the tongue; they may also be in other forms, such as ointments, gels, drops, creams, and tablets. Treatments are “individualized” or tailored to each person—it is not uncommon for different people with the same condition to receive different treatments. What happens during the Homeopathy appointment? In the first appointment, the

Homeopath evaluates, through questions, all of the patient's symptoms and their state of mind, wellbeing, fears, beliefs and reactions. The homoeopath can then capture the true essence of the patient and relate it to the essence of the medicine that is similar to it, (the designated Simillimum), which corresponds to the correct remedy for the patient. The prescribed medicine creates an overall balance and the patient begins to regain their health and wellness. The following points are used to review the progress and the general condition of the patient. A new prescription before complete recovery may be necessary. Pathologies: • Allergies

• Headaches • Neck • Sciatica • Pre and post- operative care • Depression and anxiety states • Crohn's Disease • Fibromyalgia / Chronic Fatigue Syndrome • Hemorrhoids • Cold sores and herpes zoster • Menopause • Facial trigeminal neuralgia • Infectious pathology • Digestive Disorders • Circulatory problems • Osteoarticular system • Tendinitis and epicondylitis • Hives • Dizziness Visit Fisioclube - Holistic Therapies Center, we can help you to improve your quality of life!

My life with

new eyes! H

Part two of reader Kathleen Heapey's experience of eye surgery here in the East Algarve.

ello everyone, as promised a follow up to last month and my experience of the life changing decision from which I haven’t looked back. It has transformed everything day to day and very importantly been seen through from start to finish, by the same doctor (eye test, examination, operation and checkups). Well aware that my eyes had deteriorated quite quickly I decided to take a thorough eye test with a fully qualified optometrist. Taking my glasses with me the doctor conducted the eye test and advised me that my prescription had changed a lot and I would need glasses for both distance and reading. The alternative would be a pair of varifocal glasses. The thought of two pairs of glasses didn’t fill me with joy, as I lose and forget things on a regular basis, and varifocal lenses take some getting used to. After looking into laser treatment in the UK and having heard so much great feedback from people who had had the treatment, I asked the doctor if this was an option. I was advised that in my case laser surgery wasn’t possible so for a moment there was a big sigh thinking that I'd have to continue wearing glasses and decide to either have two pairs or get used to one. My face must have been a picture of disappointment... then a moment of pure elation... he said I could consider lens surgery and he was able to do this, WOW! He went on to explain that the procedure was in fact easier and less involved than laser treatment.

10

I had heard of lens surgery some years ago but thought I'd have to go back to the UK and it would be very specialist and expensive. I asked the doctor to put back on the magnified glasses that he uses to make his final assessment for the prescription (those big clumpy metal things he drops various lenses into) and asked him “If I had the lens operation would I be able to see JUST LIKE THIS?” He said “yes!”. So what’s going to be involved, would I need to be in hospital for a few days???!!! Each eye operation would take 15 minutes (a week apart) and at worst be a little uncomfortable, but pain free. I would need to wear a patch for one night afterwards... the next day there will be no or very little pain. Is that really possible? He would take measurements for the new lenses, order them and they will be here in a week. This sounded fantastic and I didn’t hesitate to book myself in for the next week. In just a few minutes the doctor had measured my eyes and I looked forward to the operation a bit nervous, but very excited. The day arrived and after putting drops into my eyes for a couple of days at home I was very enthusiastic. Under general anesthetic I was welcomed by the doctor, gowned and taken into theatre. Twenty minutes later the operation was done, literally a bit uncomfortable but no pain! Everything changed! To be able to see properly when you’ve “got by” for a long time is unreal. No blurry faces, details in everything you had to try and guess before and every

single thing you do is so much EASIER... Hallelujah. The following week I was back for the left eye and now I have two new lenses. Every stage was done by my Doctor there was NO REDNESS, NO SORENESS, I CAN SEE PERFECTLY, you wouldn’t even know it had been done. AMAZING!!! I feel I have been lucky enough to find such a fabulous doctor right here in the East Algarve. His calming and professional approach was very reassuring. As with most operations we believe that this might not be possible unless it’s a large hospital and never in a foreign country. After all, people are always quick to criticise bad practise but I can say this was first class care and thorough professionalism at a fraction of the cost of anywhere else and more importantly no need to leave home, which is where you want to be. I’m still going into the wrong toilets aka “Mrs Doubtfire” and making mistakes, but now with perfect vision I can only blame being a bit of a walking blunder. With a big smile on my face I’m able to see things close up and far away, it is fantastic, every single thing is easier to do. One of my good friends has recently “bitten the bullet” after hearing my experience and now she’s the proud owner of “new eyes” and is thoroughly delighted too. Many thanks to Dr. Eduardo, a great man who’s changing people’s lives with his expertise. If you would like to know any more about my experience, or just have a chat about the procedure drop me a line at info@eastalgarvemag.com

inniehill bed and breakfast is a delightful Villa with its own private pool in a charming rural setting in the Eastern Algarve. If it is total relaxation you are looking for Winniehill is the perfect place to unwind. Achieving the “Alastair Sawday” recommendation, all the owners of establishments offer a winning combination of fun, quirkiness and kindness and “more than a bed for the night”. A beautifully renovated farmhouse with stunning panoramic views of Faro, Olhao, and the stunning Islands of Armona, Farol and Culatra, it is a mere 15 minute drive from Faro airport and lies half way between the pretty towns of Estoi and Moncarapho. Robin and Fiona Wilson have welcomed very many guests since moving to Portugal from Scotland in 2007, turning their family home into a Bed and Breakfast in March 2011. Fiona’s background is in catering and she was the head chef at a well known Country House Hotel

in Scotland. Robin has been a Golf PGA Professional for over 25 years, so if you would like to sharpen your game or need help or advice of where to play he can advise you. Winniehill, can provide full dinners or even a snack menu for late arrivals and all their food is home cooked and locally sourced. Breakfast by the inviting pool is the jewel in the crown. The Villa is set in the fragrant gardens of olive, plum, almond, pomegranate, orange and fig trees, which when in season guests are free to sample some of nature’s finest fruits, fresh from their fabulous garden. Your hosts are always on hand to help with advice on how to reach the many restaurants, beautiful beaches and places to visit in the area. Fiona explained they “have very many guests who are visiting family or friends who live nearby... guests enjoy their own space and relaxation whilst still being near to their loved ones”. Winniehill offers 2 large twin rooms with private bathrooms, both with stunning views of the pool area and the sea. These two rooms can also

afford privacy from the rest of the house so ideal for a family travelling together. There is also 1 double en suite room with a private courtyard and exclusive use of the fully private roof terrace. Filipe who was born in Tavira and worked in Lisbon for many years after studying Architecture. He and Ricardo have been friends since college and both have their families and roots in Tavira. explained that he wanted more quality time with his young family. It was at a barbeque with family and friends in Tavira Gardens (which included a few glasses of Medronho) that Filipe and Ricardo, who had recently returned from a trip to Nepal, came up with the idea of running tours of Tavira in Tuk Tuks. They got together the following day to discuss the previous night’s “crazy (medronha induced) idea”. They decided it wasn’t so crazy after all and began organising licences and papework etc. The 1st Tuk Tuk arrived, very excitedly, on the 21st July, last year. It offers clients a fabulous way to see the city and benefit from some heritage, culture and humour from Filipe and Ricardo, whilst taking in

THE HISTORY OF THE TUK TUK In 1947 Corradino D'Ascanio, aircraft designer at Piaggio and inventor of the Vespa, came up with the idea of building a light three-wheeled commercial vehicle to power Italy's post-war economic reconstruction. The Tuk-Tuk is the Southeast Asian version of a vehicle known elsewhere as an auto rickshaw or cabin cycle. As we know It is a widely used form of urban transport in Bangkok and other Thai cities,

18

as well as other major Southeast Asian and South Asian cities and It is particularly popular where traffic congestion is a major problem, as in Bangkok. What we perhaps didn’t know is that Tuk-Tuks were introduced in Brighton, England on 10th July 2006, where a fleet of twelve (spelt TucTuc) operate using compressed natural gas, as the first motorised rickshaw service in Europe, between Brighton Marina and Hove, via Brighton railway station.

G

ordon Railton originally from Newcastleupon–Tyne England, trained as an industrial photographer from the age of 16, he worked as a press, industrial and advertising photographer, working for firms like LG electronics, M.O.D. and was also commissioned by various multinationals including the UK Central Office of Information, covering the Royal family, ministers of state and other government work. He has photographed a variety of famous people including musicians and sportsman. Now retired to Portugal and living in the Algarve, he finally has time to enjoy the creative side of Photography, working alongside the designer Dianne Watson. Gordon Railton is one of the founder members of the Algarve photographic group, which is where he met Dianne Watson, a new member of the group. Gordon and Dianne exhibit at the Museu do Trajo throughout the year alongside the other members of the group.

Born in London, Dianne trained at the London Guildhall University and Kent Institute of Art and Design. For her degree she specialised in Silversmith and jewellery design. Along with designer images from her photography, Dianne exhibited in 15 Galleries in the UK along with France, Beverly Hills and Trinidad. Her first exhibition was in Park Lane London. Dianne has been asked to produce a collection of designer images on metal. The collection is unique, designing from her own photographs and producing artworks that are visually three dimensional. Dianne´s latest work was an installation in the Casa do Povo where she collated images of traditional chimneys taken by herself and Gordon Railton, designing them into an installation for the cafÊ where it is installed with lights giving the effect of sunset. Having had two private views of her work last year at Blevins Franks and the Londot gallery Dianne has joined with Gordon and they are having their first exhibition on the 2nd May at the restaurant ``Lagar do Mesquita`` in

oreign exchange rates can be volatile and unpredictable. A weak Euro is a benefit to buyers from outside the Euro zone but can cause a headache for vendors who are returning to their country of origin and need to exchange the proceeds from the sale to purchase a house back home. There have always been many English buyers and sellers of residential and buy to let property in the Algarve. What impact has a strong Pound / weak Euro on Britons, is it a curse or a blessing? We believe that the weak Euro is positive for the property market, here’s why. In general a weak currency makes a purchase more affordable as long as the price of the underlying asset class (real estate) remains the same. Although there is an upwards bias to property prices, this change is small when taking in consideration that the market has fallen by approx. 40% from its peak. In 2008 Sterling was trading versus the Euro almost at parity (1.022). Today’s cross rate at 1,38 is a change of 34%. On the back of Europe’s quantitative easing program the weakening of the Euro accelerated. Less than a year ago in July 2014 Sterling traded at 1.16, e.g. a price change of 18%. At the current exchange rate not only a holiday in Portugal has become considerably cheaper versus a year ago, property is also looking more attractive. Not all vendors are British. Many vendors who are not restricted by a weak Euro are open to offers and happy to sell. Their British neighbour owning a similar property may be less willing to accept the same offer. For Britons a strong pound makes it easier to purchase a property and perhaps pay a bit more to close a deal whereas a British vendor maybe more reluctant to sell. We believe that as a result the average transaction price is going up, not down. A weak Euro is both a blessing and a curse; it depends on your circumstance. However, for the above reasons we think in general a weak Euro is a blessing for the property market and prices. A British vendor sooner or later needs to take the prevailing FX rate

www.eastalgarvemag.com

Rui Horta Law Office into consideration to accept an offer or not. If an offer is accepted you need to have a plan how and when to fix your rate. When the proceeds from the sale are needed to make a purchase back home, it is advisable to secure the rate when you receive your down payment. The balance you receive at the deed can be secured with a forward trade. The extent to which this rate differs from a spot rate depends on the interest rate differential between both currencies. You may need some guidance on this matter. It is no secret that banks do not offer competitive rates. Consider the cost saving alternative offered by various specialist FX companies who also provide a better service, often leading to thousands of Euros in savings. Some have representatives in the Algarve who can meet you in person to discuss your requirements. If the proceeds are not needed for reinvestment, there is another option if you do not like the current exchange rate. Simply keep the Euros on your bank

account either in Portugal or back home (just ask your bank to open a Euro account for you). Lastly, once you have reached agreement about the transaction price it is important to secure the exchange rate. Currency markets can be volatile. Not securing your exchange rate leaves you open to speculation, which is nice if a currency moves in your favour but when it moves in the other direction it is usually a disaster. A taste of

Meet Ray and Liz, offering a unique, cultured dining experience in Tavira.

Tavira A

Taste of Tavira is a private cooking business managed and run by Irish couple, professional chef Ray Gillespie and Liz Fletcher. Promoting the Mediterranean Diet, they offer top class private cooking in the Algarve using only the finest locally sourced seasonal ingredients. All their food is made from scratch and they pride themselves in using Tavira sea salt, locally pressed extra virgin olive oil, local cheeses and Algarve wines, specialising in Mediterranean cooking, especially fish. They take great pride in cooking and presenting slow food of the highest standard. Clients are guaranteed a top class service second to none based on respect, discretion and privacy. Ray and Liz can cook in your home, at events or in other venues of your choice. They also operate an intimate Tavira based Dining Club. Anything and everything is possible. Raymond Gillespie or Ray to friend and foe hails from Ireland. He was educated in his home town Athlone, situated in the heart of Ireland, and

30

attended the Marist College and later gained entry to Athlone Institute of Tecnology where he studied hospitality graduating in 1985 with an honours degree in Hotel Management. With a student of the year award and a degree in his back pocket Ray emigrated to the United States. He settled in Boston where he discovered his love of cooking and opted to enter the crazy world of chefing. Totally committed to his craft and food science, Ray dived into the deep end and never looked back. For as long as he can remember Raymond has loved to cook. Having spent time during his teenage years in the Middle East, he developed a keen interest in spices. He spent almost thirty years developing and perfecting his

culinary skills in the city of Boston, in high end establishments such as The Boston Harbour Hotel, Le Meridien Boston,The Bostonian Hotel, Mamma Maria Ristorante and Salumeria Italiana in Boston's historic North End neighbourhood. His passion for all things Mediterranean is apparent in his kitchen. With a pantry full of exotic spices and aromatic herbs, his creative but simple cooking aims to please every palate including the serious “Foodie”, he fearlessly strives to go where no man has gone before in dining terms. After a well deserved vacation in Portugal, Ray decided to pack his bags, wave goodbye to New England and move to the Algarve. Portugal, its climate and abundance of local ingredients, was all it took to entice this adventurous

PLANT GRAFTI NG Part two of our series on plant Grafting... Not just hard work but the term used to describe joining plants together thus creating a new variety.

Whip graft, bench graft. The whip graft works best when the stock and scion are of similar diameter, preferably between 6mm and 12mm. The stock can be either a plant growing in the field or a dormant bare root plant as in bench grafting. The stock should be smooth and straight grained. Do not graft near a point where side twigs or branches have developed. The scion should be one-year-old wood, preferably the same size as the stock. If the stock is larger than the scion, contact can be made on only one side. The scion should never be larger than the stock. While other types of grafts depend on the bark slipping well, the whip graft does not. Preparing the stock and scion. The cuts made in both stock and scion should match. On both parts, make a smooth sloping cut about 3.75cm to 5cm long depending on the thickness of the material (see A and C in Figure 1). Make the first cut with a single, smooth cut with no waves or whittling. The beginner should practice by cutting extra twigs. A good quality, very sharp knife is essential . Cutting the stock and scion. The stock may be (for a bench graft) a stem and root system of a young plant or a branch on a rootstock. Make a slanting cut about 5cm from the butt of the young whip or leave a branch stub at least 30cm in length. Although grafts may be made with a simple union

32

of two slanting cuts, the strongest graft results from a whip-and-tongue system. To form the tongue hold the one-sided, slanting cut facing you, and support it with your finger. About one-third down from the tip of this cut, make a downward cut about 1.25cm long as close to parallel with the grain of the wood as possible (B and D). Fitting the stock and scion. After the cuts are made on both parts, push them together tightly enough so that the cut surfaces match as closely as possible. The cambial area (area immediately under the bark) of both pieces must be aligned for a union to develop. If the scion and stock are not the same size, match the cambiums on one side only. The lower tip of the scion should not hang over the stock. If the toe of either the stock or scion extend beyond the heel of the other, cut if off evenly. Wrapping the graft. In most cases, it is safer and better to wrap the graft to keep it tight to prevent drying. Wrap the graft with a rubber budding strip, grafting tape, or a plastic tape such as electrical tape; then carefully cover the union and binding material with grafting compound. Start wrapping on the stock and work up onto the scion. Remove wrapping as soon as the scion has started to grow to prevent girdling of the tree. GRAFTS WITH SMALL SCIONS AND LARGE UNDERSTOCKS The Cleft Graft

The cleft graft is most commonly used to top work a tree; that is, to change from one variety to another. It can be used on either young or mature trees. Young trees may be cleft grafted on the trunk while older trees are grafted on branches not more than 6.75cm in diameter. The grafts should be within 60cm to 90cm of the trunk on main branches and preferably not more than 120cm to 180cm from ground, or the new top of tree will be too high. Branches fully exposed to sunlight and in the main stream of sap flow are more successful than those in shaded or inactive areas. Grafts on upright branches grow better than those on

horizontal branches . Preparing the stock. Branches of large trees or the trunk of a small tree, must be sawed off to provide a stock for the scions. Select a smooth, knotfree, straight-grained section. Saw the branch off at a right angle to the grain. Don't tear or split the bark. If the cut is not smooth, trim off the rough edges. The bark must be tight to form a successful graft. Using a grafting tool, or a heavy knife that may be tapped with a mallet, drive the blade into the stub to split the stock through the center so a split extends about 10cm into the branch. In horizontal branches, the cleft should be side

wise, that is, not perpendicular, to reduce breakage from birds and storms. Preparing the scion. The scion for the cleft graft should be made from one-year-old wood about 6mm in diameter. After making a sloping cut about 6mm above the upper bud, cut the scion with three buds, so it can be inserted with the lowest bud just above the stock. Always note which is top and bottom of a scion stick. A scion will not grow if inserted upside down. Start below the lowest bud, and make a long, smooth cut toward the base. The cut should have a surface 2.5cm to 3.75cm long. Turn

the scion to the opposite side, and make a second smooth cut of the same length so one side (the side containing the lowest bud) is slightly thicker than the other side (see A and B in Figure 2). The wedge that is formed does not need a sharp point, a blunt point is preferable. If the wedge is cut to a sharp point there is danger of the bark peeling. Also a sharp scion wedge will not fit the cleft as well (C). Inserting the scion. With a grafting chisel or a small wedge, open the crack wide enough to insert the scion easily. Insert the scion with the thicker side toward the outside (B) with the cambiums in contact. Keep in mind that the bark of the larger stock is thicker than the scion bark, so the scion should not be flush with the stock. A very slight tilt will assure a contact, at least where the cambium layers cross (D). The best contact point is about 6mm below the shoulder of the stock. After properly positioning the scion, remove the wedge or chisel from the slit. The pressure of the stock against the scion should be greatest where the cambiums touch. When the scion is placed in the crack, the cut surface of the scion wedge should be almost entirely hidden.

34

Two scions are usually inserted in each slit, one at each side. This gives a better chance for getting at least one graft to grow. There is no need to tie, unless the stock is small and does not bind well. Cover the unions with grafting compound and be sure the cleft is covered its full length (E). Caring for the graft. After the graft begins to grow, it must also be given attention. Grafts that grow vigorously may need to have the tips pinched out to stimulate branching. Very long shoots may break loose during strong winds. Cleft grafts should grow vigorously, and need only light pruning to shape their development. Never prune heavily. After the first year, some training and branch selection may be necessary. If both scions in a cleft grow, shorten one to allow the other to develop and become dominant. Do not remove the second graft until later because it will help to cover the wound faster. Bark graft (veneer graft) Bark grafting is similar to cleft grafting and may be performed on branches, ranging from 2.5cm up to 7.5cm in diameter. Stock preparation. The branch or trunk is cut off at a right angle in the same manner as described for cleft grafting.

The bark graft can be made only when the bark slips or easily separates from the wood. This usually is in early spring as growth begins. Several techniques can be used on the stock for the bark graft. •Make a slit in the bark about 1.75cm long • Make two slits in the bark separated by the width of the scion. Scion preparation. The scion should be 10cm to 12.5cm long with two to three buds. Prepare the base of the scion by cutting inward 3.75cm to 5cm from the base then downward, forming a shoulder and long, smooth cut. The long cut should extend about 1/3 through the twig. Keeping its base strong enough to insert but not too thick. On the side opposite the long cut, make a short cut to give the base of the scion a wedge shape for easier insertion. Inserting the scion. A knife may be used to lift the bark at the top of the slit. Push the scion down and center it in the slit, or between both slits if the double slit method is used. Insert the scion until the shoulder rests on the stub. If the scion is large enough, one or two small nails may be used to tighten the scion to the stock. Some use electrical tape to pull the surfaces

tight. If the bark does not split or tear, nailing or wrapping is not necessary. Side graft, stub graft The side graft is suitable for plants that are too large for a whip graft but not large enough for cleft or bark grafts. The plant or branch that will serve as the stock should be between 7.5 to 10cm in diameter. The scion should be about 6mm in diameter. The scion is inserted into the side of the stock, which is generally larger in diameter than the scion. Preparing the scion. The scion should contain two to three buds and be about 7.5cm long. Make a wedge at the end of the scion similar to that made for cleft grafting, but it should be shorter. Make one side slightly thicker than the other. It is not necessary to make the cuts more than 1 inch long. They must be made straight and smooth. Preparing the understock. Select a smooth place on the branch at least a foot from the trunk. scion should be held in place. Tying is unnecessary if the stock binds well. Cut surfaces should then be covered with grafting compound (E). The stock should then be cut off 12.5 to 15cm beyond the graft. Remove any lateral branches on the stub that might crowd the graft as it begins to grow. Caring for the graft. In a few weeks, cut off the stock above the union (D) and cover the cut surface with grafting compound (D). If the graft has been tied, cut the binding shortly after growth starts; this will prevent girdling. In the first season, you may allow some shoot growth from below the graft, but do not permit this growth to shade the scion growth. After the first season, all growth should be cut off, except that of the graft. Well, there you have the basic guides to grafting, but the only way is to try it for yourself. I would suggest that before you try on plants you actually want to graft, practise making the cuts first to get the idea.

For those buying Sterling we did see the Euro bite back but not as much as they had hoped. There were numerous factors that contributed to the strong Pound against the Euro in March, the Greek bailout agreement, Eurozone unemployment figures, and the European central bank embarking on their 60 billion QE programme, the UK budget and the US Federal reserve meeting. It is important to remember that a key driver of a weak Euro is the strength of the US dollar, so any news that comes out from the US can have an impact. What you need to know about your IRS 2014 Tax Return

T

he IRS delivery time has begun and will run until the end of May. There are several ways that you can use to deliver your personal income tax return, different dates that you need to know and various annexes that you need to fill, depending on your income streams. So it’s time to clarify some of the questions you may have concerning this important task. In which form can I submit my IRS tax return in Portugal? The submission of the IRS for 2014 can be done in paper at the local tax office, through post, or via the tax portal (which just been redesigned recently). However the most advisable way is to give this job to your accountant or tax adviser. He will make simulations before filling the forms, analyze and compare your tax return, before submitting it, making sure you are paying the legal minimum. When do I need to submit my IRS tax return in Portugal? In April for all those earning only pensions or salaries. In May for all the others cases. Who needs to fill an IRS tax return in Portugal?

If you are resident then most likely you are forced to submit an IRS. Only very few residents are exempt, for instance those that earn less than 4.104€ either through a pension or a salary. What happens if I forget to file a return or do it incorrectly? It’s important to be aware that from 2015, the fines for non-compliance with the dates, can be very high, depending on the type of miss conduct and the delay in filling the return, fines can go from 375€ to 22.500€. I’m non-resident, do I need to submit a return? First of all, are you sure that you are non-resident? Do you have a fiscal representative? If not, where do you receive your IMI council tax bills? If you receive them at your property in Portugal, then most likely you are resident for tax purposes in Portugal. If you are non-resident, then you will only submit a IRS return in Portugal, if you have income from Portuguese source. When do I need to pay my IRS? After you submit your tax return the tax authorities will validate your declaration and you will receive a tax bill in the post, giving you 30 days to pay. Please note that if you intend to be away during the

warmer months and don’t have a fiscal representative to receive your bills, you will incur monthly interest charges and penalties, if paying out of date. Some suggestions to make your IRS this year a stress-free task. We strongly advise our customers to prepare everything in time, in order to complete this process smoothly: PASSWORD: Make sure you and your partner have a password to access the Tax Portal. If you do not have one, request a new one immediately; COPY OF ID AND NIF: For you, your partner and any dependents you may have; INVOICES: Gather all documents that can be used to reduce your tax bill, such as medical or chemist receipts, invoices, statements for your insurances, investments and mortgage, rental receipts, etc; DECLARATIONS OF INCOME: Gather the statements of income and withholding taxes; BANK ACCOUNT: Know your NIB at hand, as it will be necessary to include on your IRS return and will make any tax refund much quicker. Remember if you have a resident status but your income was earned abroad, you have to deliver along with the tax return the ‘J’ Annex which discriminates the values received abroad. There are taxation agreements in place between Portugal and several countries to avoid double taxation, so the impact this will have on your IRS will depend on several factors. SIX GAMES UNDEFEATED! All the latest sports news from Chris Wright.

an the local professional football team claw its way to safety? SC Olhanense are putting up a spirited fight against relegation and went through March undefeated in the 2nd Division. One victory and five draws has seen the team put in some sterling performances, the most notable of which must be the 1-0 away win at Beira-Mar and the 2-2 draw at local archrivals SC Farense. There is no love lost between the Olhão and Faro based clubs whose grounds are separated by a 4kms stretch of the EN125. The intimidating atmosphere at the Sã o Luis Stadium saw the home fans letting off numerous

smoke canisters before the game but this failed to deter the visitors who got off to a flying start. Galassi thumped in a curling free-kick after just six minutes but Farense equaliser almost immediately through former Blackburn Rovers player Edinho Junior. Olhanense took the lead again thanks to Adilson slotting home Femi Balogun’s cross. Yet again the home side levelled matters. All this before the break and Olhanense even missed a penalty! Next up were FC Porto ‘B’ with Mastriani and Celestino scoring in the 2-2 home draw. The 1-1 home draw with V.Guimarães ‘B’ will, unfortunately, be remembered for an ugly incident just before half-time

when Guimarães midfielder Nassim Zitouni scythed through Femi Balogun well after the ball had gone. Incredulously referee Tiago Antunes only brandished a yellow card much to the amazement of everyone in the ground. In the ensuing melee Olhanense manager Cristiano Bacci and Neno, the V.Guimarães technical delegate, were sent to the stands. Days later and another local derby this time in Portimã o against Portimonense resulted in both teams sharing the points. April will be an equally testing month with home games against Benfica ’B’, promotion hopefuls Fraemunde and fellow relegation candidates Braga ’B’.

Reflections of teaching golf

This months article from Keith Ashdown, golf professional at Benamor golf.

Pro stats

T

he teaching of golf is an interesting career. The satisfaction is in bringing happiness to people who are troubled by difficulties in playing the game - by helping them to play better. When beginners are taken along from their very earliest days, they are dependent on their teacher, they trust him and follow his advice as the way to strike a golf ball is unfolded to them, until they get wings and "leave the nest" they rely on his guidance. They can only learn to play on a golf course, and their first practical introduction to the rules and etiquette is most important. I have found that any time spent in introducing golfers to this part of their game brings as much satisfaction as anything else to the pupil, as his golf career advances. Anybody can play and enjoy the game, the rules must be known and followed. One of the rules of lift to be grateful for all mercies - is, I find, often overlooked, particluarly by golfers who take too much for granted and therefore often fail to enjoy golfing to the full. All this leads me to the difficulty the teacher often has with the good

player who is off his game, who not having found for himself the missing link, sought the professional's advice. If the instructor can spot the trouble and so fix up the swing, all is well, but usually the main satisfaction obtained is only the financial one, because the good player feels it is some sort of reflection on his golfing knowledge to admit he had a tip, even from the pro, but the really great champion is never too proud to seek help and acknowedge openly from whence it came. Every golfer should be grateful to his initator in the game. The task of a club professional is never easy as it only needs a few ungrateful and unsuccessful golfers ready to put the blame on his lack of ability to teach them, rather than on their own limited talent, to start a malicious campaign against him, which can cause much unhappiness. I have noticed that many capable but sensitive professionals have contunually changed around from club to club. I assume they cannot fight the clique of ungrateful pupils, who go around the corner for lessons and who will always go round the corner, because they

have not realised that they are now playing their "usual game", and it will always be poor. They think they are great golfers held back because no one discloses the missing secret to them. This maliscious criticism of teaching methods used by any given professional often drives a capable teacher to rattle out a series of accepted platitudes which, when chewed over at the bar, are found to be indisputable. It is rather like a doctor giving everyone the same tonic medicine, whereas if a different contradictory prescription is made, one often hears "he told me just the opposite, he must be nuts". Whenever I get onto the teaching subject I feel I can speak with some authority as I have spent 51 years as a professional and have had great satisfaction helping along raw beginners and champions alike. I have suffered, also, all the hurts which come from remarks of thoughtless pupils, who after all, I suppose, are only following the usual trends of life. It is a wonderful world and our golf game is a wonderful one. Enjoy your golf, Keith
