Algarve named “best place in the world to retire” for second year

Source: portugalresident.com

F

or the second year running, the Algarve has been named the “best place in the world to retire to” by the Live and Invest Overseas website. “It boasts a low cost of living, great weather, an established expat community and a new retiree residency program,” writes Kathleen Peddicord, the website’s publisher, cited by Forbes magazine. The travel expert stresses how a onebedroom apartment near the beach can cost $100,000 (around €90,000) and that “you can get by speaking English only”. “Thanks to a strong US dollar and recessed and depressed property markets, this is the best time perhaps in our lifetimes to be thinking about owning digs of your own in locations of particular interest to the retiree. Europe, especially, is a bargain of our age,” stresses Peddicord. The ranking is based on numbers for 12 categories “that represent the most important criteria retirees must consider when shopping the globe for the best places to live out their retirement,” including cost of living, climate, health care, safety, taxes and the existence of an expat community. The data is then “supplemented with on-the-ground reporting” from the website’s correspondents.

Cacela Velha beach among best in the world

acela Velha beach – also known as Praia da Fábrica – has been featured on a list of the “15 best beaches in the world” published online by the Spanish edition of Condé Nast Traveler magazine. Travel writer Sara Morillo describes the beach as “the metaphor of my happiness”, which she has been visiting every summer since 2006. “It is where I have found what I can call as ‘my beach’,” Morrilo writes. The writer praises the small village for boasting “fantastic sunsets”, and for offering visitors a chance to board a small ship and explore a nearby desert island with “white sand and

endless shores”. Eating fresh shellfish caught in the Ria Formosa estuary is another experience to be found here, Morillo adds. Other beaches on the Condé Nast list include Riviera Maya (Mexico), Capri (Italy), Pelican Point (Bahamas) and Easter Island (Chile). The magazine’s praise is being celebrated by Vila Real de Santo António council, which says the beach, that was recently awarded a Quercus ‘gold’ flag for the quality of its water, was also considered one of the ‘top 10 European beaches by foot’ by British newspaper The Guardian in 2009.

T

he psoas major muscle (pronounced “so-as”) is often referred to as the deepest core, or as yoga therapist and film-maker Danielle Olson states, the “muscle of the soul.” This core-stabilizing muscle located near the hip bone affects mobility, structural balance, joint function, flexibility, and much more. In addition to its function to help keep the body upright and moving, the psoas is believed to allow you to connect with the present moment especially when it is stretched out and tension is released from the body. Research indicates that the psoas is vital to our psychological wellbeing in addition to structural health. Liz Koch, author of The Psoas Book, states that our psoas “literally embodies our deepest urge for survival, and more profoundly, our elemental desire to flourish.” This means that there is a lot more to the psoas than one might initially think. It is entirely possible to harness healing pranic energy and improve mental health by keeping the psoas healthy. Where is the Psoas? The psoas is the principal muscle

associated with physical stability. It stretches from the legs to the spine and is the only muscle connecting the legs to the spinal column. The muscle flares out from the T12 vertebrae, follows down the five lumbar vertebrae, before attaching to the top of the thigh bone. The Reptilian Connection In addition to connecting the legs and spine, the psoas is connected to the diaphragm. Breathing is modulated at the diaphragm, and it is also the location where many physical symptoms associated with fear and anxiety manifest. Koch believes that this is due to the direct link between the psoas and the most ancient part of our brain stem and spinal cord, called the reptilian brain. According to Koch, “Long before the spoken word or the organizing capacity of the cortex developed, the reptilian brain, known for its survival instincts, maintained our essential core functioning.” The way we live today, constantly rushing, competing and achieving, has the psoas in a constant “fight or flight” state. Issues Associated with Chronic Psoas Stress Trapped in a constant “flight or fight”

state, psoas muscles are stressed and constricted, almost from the time of birth. As Koch notes, “this situation is exacerbated by many things in our modern lifestyle, from car seats to constrictive clothing, from chairs to shoes that distort our posture, curtail our natural movements and further constrict our psoas.” This lifelong chronic stress put on the psoas can lead to many problems like back, hip, or knee pain, and even digestive issues and dysfunctional breathing. It could also be a major cause why people suffer from chronic physical pain. The physical body is not the only part of you that suffers from a chronicallystressed psoas. The psoas is much more than a muscle used for structural stability. It influences every element of life, from how you feel, to how you look at the world, and even how you treat others. A variety of problems have been associated with a chronically-stressed psoas muscle: it can negatively affect your emotional state; it can impact your interpersonal relationships; and it can influence your general contentment with life. Awareness that a healthy psoas is important to emotional wellness, as well as

physical health, is the first step towards ensuring that we give this muscle the attention it deserves. Koch states, “Whether you suffer from sore back or anxiety, from knee strain or exhaustion, there’s a good chance that a constricted psoas might be contributing to your woes.” Fear and the Psoas Since the psoas is closely linked to our “fight or flight” mechanism, fear can be over-represented in those with a constricted psoas. It is an emotion that manifests itself in the most unusual ways and can “lock” itself into the body resulting in both physical and emotional tension. By restoring balance to your psoas muscles, you are likely to release this pent up tension, which can have a profound effect on releasing unfounded fearfulness about life, and thus improve both your physical and mental wellbeing. You will feel a greater sense of inner peace, along with fewer muscle aches and strains. The Connection to the Energetic Body Lengthening and releasing your psoas grounds you to the Earth, which is filled with healing and revitalizing energy, thus allowing you to balance your pranic energy and

9

Health

enabling you to feel more present in the moment. Proper structural stability attributed to a healthy psoas allows prana to flow, unimpeded, throughout the body, allowing for proper distribution of vital energy. In the physical sense, when the body can properly support itself, movement is less-restricted and requires less effort, thus leaving you more energetic. Ancient Wisdom for Modern Times Our understanding of the psoas is by no means new knowledge. In fact, it is more akin to ancient wisdom that was either lost or discarded over time. Yoga shows us explicitly that ancient gurus understood the importance of releasing contracted psoas muscles. Ancient yoga asanas, or postures, that are now practiced all around the world, focus on lengthening and releasing psoas muscles and restoring comfort and balance to the entire body. With consistent practice, you can learn how to isolate this muscle, which

10

can be immensely useful and healing in the long run. Yoga is also a great way to measure the current health of the psoas. There are many postures, such as tree (Vrksasana), which cannot be properly achieved if the psoas is contracted. If you are practicing a sitting or standing yoga pose and feel strain in either your knees or lower back (or both), then there’s a good chance that your psoas is constricted and needs more of your attention. The psoas is an important, yet often unknown, muscle that plays a vital role in physical health and mental wellbeing. The cumulative effect of neglecting this muscle is physical and mental stress and tension, which manifests itself in our society as anxiety, depression, chronic back pain, knee pain, digestive distress, respiratory problems, etc. Visit Fisioclube Fuzeta we can improve your quality of life! hot, balmy evening set the tone for the latest jazz concert at Clube de Tavira. Despite some issues with the sun early on, the concert started in good time, with Manuela Lopez taking to the outdoor stage complete with straw hat and sunglasses! The capacity audience was in for a rare treat, as the internationally renowned vocalist worked through the first set with foot tapping, latino jazz melodies. Backed admirably

by the group of highly talented musicians, Miss Lopez captivated the appreciative throng with her unique and versatile tones. As the sun set to an atmospheric background view of flocks of feeding swifts against an almost full moon, the second set commenced. Duncan Kinnell on vibraphone is no stranger to this venue and was well received with his enthusiastic contribution. But for me, the highlight of the evening's performance came from multi instrumentalist Matt

Lester who almost stole the show with his fantastic range of musical talent. Moving seamlessly between tenor and alto saxophone, he followed with the most amazing flute rendition, breathtakingly in time with the vocalist. The attentive audience could have heard a pin drop. This was yet another highly entertaining evening of top class modern jazz, performed by a highly enthusiastic and talented group of musicians. A great night out ! Tony Walker

Every Sunday from 1500 hrs there is dancing to live music, which

ranges from Portuguese, Spanish to Brazilian. It is an excellent occasion to join approximately 150 people who enjoy the afternoon away for three hours. People come from all over the Eastern Algarve to this event. Refreshments and food are available. The President is a successful businessman with his own business and freely donates much time to help people in the community. Casa do Povo is a non profit organisation in its own right and is one of the major distribution points every Tuesday and Thursday for free food available

To enjoy all Casa do Povo's wonderful facilities, all you need to do is become a member, which is a nominal 12€ a year or make a contribution of 2.50€ for a daily visit. Casa do Povo is also available for private parties. We were lucky enough to be invited to meet the chef, 'Aussie', who is traditionally trained, with extensive experience in Chinese and Indian Cusine after immersing himself for 12 months in each type of discipline. He is a great advocate of Spanish cuisine, using fresh produce, delivering a Tapas with simplicity, yet with a complexity, which wants you to come back for more.

Known to go off on a tangent after meeting a French Louisiana chef, producing the most amazing smoked ribs, which take 30 hours to prepare and cook. Aussie enjoys making Bouillabaise and other seafood dishes with a twist. He's not a great believer in big menus, as he says, 'you can go in some of the most respected restaurants in England and there will be two starters, three mains and puddings'. Further he added, 'keep it tight (the menu), keep it fresh and let the fun begin!' We think that a visit to Casa do Povo Moncarapacho is unmissable, give it a try, you won't be disappointed! he Algarve continues to be one of the most popular holiday destinations in the world. Every year in Summer the beaches are packed with a peak in August, but walk a few miles in both direction and you almost have the beach to yourself. It is no surprise then that holidaymakers leave wishing to return, some on a permanent basis. Property prices are still very attractive, having corrected 40% from their peak in 2008. For buyers from the United Kingdom this offers a double whammy, as Sterling versus the Euro is trading at an 8 year high. Making a permanent move to Portugal has become even more attractive with the successful introduction of programs such as the Golden Visa and the NHR (NonHabitual Resident) to attract foreign buyers of property. No wonder then that there are many buyers around looking to secure their Algarve dream property! Especially the NHR program is of interest to pensioners and the self employed with a scientific, technical or artistic nature, which basically end up paying zero tax on income, changing them from ‘not happy residents’ in their country of origin into very happy Portuguese residents indeed. Depending on the country of origin, tax on pensions can be as high as 60% of income. For example, a foreigner with a pension of Euro 3500 per month (after 50% tax) all of a sudden ends up receiving Euro 7000 per month once the NHR status in Portugal has been obtained. Once your have obtained the NHR status, the tax holiday is valid for 10 years. The success of the Golden Visa and NHR programs has also not gone unnoticed by real estate agencies and vendors. The former enjoyed an increase in transaction volume. The latter managed to sell their property, which in many cases had been on

€25,000 the market for several years. The idea of Portugal as Europe’s newest tax haven is gaining traction, judged by the growing number of buyers from Scandinavia, France and Belgium. More and more people seem to think Portugal is a fiscal paradise. In addition, recent law changes for Local Lodging include a lower tax rate of less than 4% of rental income, which makes a buy to let property all the more attractive as it offers the best of both worlds, namely your own home away from home and rental income. If you consider purchasing a property in the Algarve, timing may be of the essence. Property prices are still attractive and the Euro is relatively weak versus other currencies. Gardening

P

elargoniums are tough, water wise plants that can provide a big splash of colour for minimal effort. You’ll probably know them as geraniums, and for a long time, they’ve been taken for granted, tucked away in neglected corners of the garden. But the need to conserve water has led to a resurgence of interest in this beautiful group of plants. Early botanists lumped pelargonium’s together with a group of` similar plants already known as geraniums, and the name has stuck with gardeners ever since. There are five major types. The ivy leaf pelargonium’s, which derive form a single distinctive

32

species Pelargonium peltatum. It has a leaf that looks like English ivy and has a wonderful trailing habit, which makes the plant a useful groundcover, for spilling over embankments and the tops of big pots. They also have lovely, delicate flowers, often with intricate patterning. And like all pelargonium’s, benefit from a regular, light trimming every few months to keep them looking their best. Zonal pelargonium’s have cute flowers but for these plants it’s really all about the foliage. They derive their name from the zones or bands of colour in the leaves. Zonal pelargonium’s produce so much foliage that a collection of dead leaves builds underneath. It’s a

great idea just to remove those to stop the build up of fungal diseases such as botrytis. Regal pelargonium’s develop a shrubby habit in the garden and are more upright growing. With rounded, deeply serrated leaves and wide, trumpet shaped flowers often exotic in colour and it is the spectacular flower which makes them great in pots, courtyards and garden beds. Dwarf and miniature zonal pelargonium’s are 13-20cm tall measured from soil to the top of the plant excluding stem length and flower. Making them excellent plants for pots and window boxes. With the miniature zonal plants being floriferous with double and single blooms in a

Plants to add colour to your garden Small or large there is a Pelargonium to suit your garden

wide range of colours and having green to greenish-black leaves. Scented-leaved pelargonium’s have small, delicate flowers with five petals, and fragrant foliage for which they are chiefly grown. They make excellent house plants and in warmer climates can be grown outside as bedding plants. Pelargonium’s produce flower buds all year. To keep them coming, just pinch out the old flower stems as they finish, and the plant will look after itself. Pelargonium’s can be grown in all types of well drained compost providing it is fresh and has been kept out of direct sunlight. Care needs to be taken with watering, however as

www.eastalgarvemag.com

some composts can drain more freely than others and pelargonium’s need to be kept on the dry side until well established. They then may need plenty of watering during the growing season. Give pelargonium’s a weekly application of a high potash fertilizer. Start these feeds three weeks from potting up and throughout the summer. This helps the plants to continue producing a mass of goodquality blooms without becoming to leafy. Pelargonium’s are one of the easiest garden plants to propagate. And the propagation method is the same for all varieties. Taking cuttings is an inexpensive way of producing

new plants whilst maintaining older plants shape and size. SELECTING THE CUTTINGS Although it is possible to take cuttings from spring onwards it is best to take your cuttings in the summer months when the light conditions are good and the weather is warm. Select strong healthy shoots (non-flowering ones from regal or scented leaves varieties). Cutting just above the 3rd joint below the growing tip, and trim each cutting just below the lowest joint and remove the leaves. INSERTING THE CUTTINGS Choose a pot size suitable for the number of cuttings: a 13cm pot will take about 5 cuttings. Fill the pot with

33

Gardening standard seed or cutting compost, press down firmly, and place the pot in a container of water until the compost becomes moist. Remove the pot and allow it to drain. Insert the cuttings, pressing them down to eliminate any air beneath the bases of the cutting and do not water. AFTERCARE Place the pot in a light, warm position, but not in full sun. One week after water the cuttings again from below by putting the pots back in water. Water again in another week to 10 days by which time the cuttings should be rooting. Remember never water the cuttings from above or cover with plastic as this could cause grey mould/botrytis or other damping off diseases. Always allow free circulation of air around them. When the cuttings have rooted and fresh leaves start to appear, pot them up singly into 7cm pots. Other methods to make further plants are from seeds and division. From seed you first need to remove the parachutes from the small seed to sow. Germination occurs in 5-25 days. In hot weather, seeds of many succulents lie dormant, so are best sown after summer. Seedlings may damp off if chilled or in poor light. Division is done on plants that are over 2 years old. Firstly lift the parent plant and cut or break off one or more of the tubers from the roots. Half fill a small pot with cactus compost and add a shallow layer of fine grit. Lay the tuber on top and cover with more grit. Place

in a bright, airy spot at 19°C. Keep the compost slightly moist. A new shoot should be produced from each tuber after 2-3 weeks. DISEASES Flower Mould: Because pelargonium’s have many florets that make up the flower head they are very prone to grey mould (Botrytis), particularly in damp or wet weather. Eventually this can lead to further troubles with the stem, when brown soft rot also occurs. Make sure that faded blooms are removed

by snapping the entire stalk from the plant... Oedema: Oedema is a condition were the leaves appear distorted or have small growths on the underside. This is common is greenhouse plants and several factors can cause this problem, including over-watering or high humidity. Reduce watering and improved ventilation to remedy this

problem. Leaf spots: Leaf spots are very common and widespread on pelargoniums. Possible causes are bacterial or fungal infections, resulting in lesions on the leaves and blackening of stems. The problem seems to be more apparent in over crowded greenhouses. Avoid over-watering, damp conditions improve ventilation. Snails/Slugs: Snails and slugs cause slight damage to pelargoniums, mainly young plants, by feeding on the stems and young leaves. This occurs mostly during wet weather. Damage can be similar to that cause by caterpillar’s snails and slugs leave a distinctive 'slime trail'. Vulnerable or specimen plants should be protected by placing course grit or eggshells around the pot. Alternatively use slug traps or pellets, sprinkled sparingly. Pelargonium rust: This is a common and serious disease that affects pelargoniums, although it should not be confused with the rust that attacks fuchsias. The diseases spread to the UK, from its natural habitat in South Africa, in the mid 1960's. This disease only affects Zonal pelargoniums. The visible signs are similar to that of fuchsia rust; brownish yellow pustules which develop on the underside of leaves. In severe attacks there may be leaf fall which seriously affects the plants health, resulting in lower flower production and fewer

shoots. Remove and destroy all infected leaves and spray with a systemic fungicide. Pelargonium rust is specific to that species and will not attack neighboring plants of any other genus, such as fuchsias. Caterpillars: During the summer months, when caterpillars are active, you will almost certainly find the distinct holes that have been eaten from the leaves - minus the slime trail! These are normally small holes, central to the leaf, although the edges are also eaten. Some growing tips of shoots may be pulled together when the caterpillar uses silk to join the leaf tips - it can then feed in relative safety. Remove and destroy any caterpillars that you may find or spray the plant with a systemic insecticide. Viruses: Various viruses attack pelargonium’s but the commonest is leaf curl virus, although the leaves do not actually curl but are in fact pale yellowish spots, not to be confused

with rust which attacks the underside. It is only later on in the attack that the leaves take on a curled appearance. Symptoms of this disease usually appear in the spring on over-wintered plants and cuttings taken from last years plants. New foliage is rarely affected. Cuttings that have been taken the previous autumn will show

To Tavira Look out for the Yellow flags

symptoms of this disease and may appear more intense in hot, dry weather. The problem is believed to be soil borne. All badly affected plants should be destroyed. Black leg: Black leg is a disease, aptly named, which affects cuttings and young plants. The blackening of the stems spreads upwards from soil level and the affected tissue shrivels and looks pinched, while leaves wilt and shrivel. The plant or cuttings may also become unstable and are prone to fall over. Eventually the plant is so weakened that it will die. Careful husbandry can help eradicate this problem, make sure the pots and trays are cleaned and disinfected before use and compost can be sterilized. Cuttings should only be taken from healthy disease free plants and dipped in a fungicide. Clean water, tepid if used from a tap, should be used. Avoid using water that has been stored in dirty rain butts. Keep plants well ventilated whilst in the greenhouse.

T

The UK Budget And Expatriates In Portugal

he UK Chancellor of the Exchequer, George Osborne delivered his budget on 8th July. It includes measures that will impact on UK nationals living in Portugal, depending on your situation. Inheritance tax A transferable main residence relief will be introduced in addition to the existing nil rate band of £325,000 (which remains frozen until 2021). It starts at £100,000 per person in 2017 and increases by £25,000 per year until reaching £175,000 in 2020/2021. At that point it creates an effective £500,000 threshold for individuals, provided the property passes to a direct descendent. Any unused residence allowance will be transferred to their surviving spouse or civil partner, making an effective £1m inheritance tax threshold for a couple. Where the net estate exceeds £2m, the main home relief is tapered away. This extra exemption applies to a property outside the UK provided it has been the main home of the deceased at some point. Changes to domicile rules from April 2017 The permanent non-UK domicile status will be abolished. Anyone who has lived in the UK for 15 of the past 20 years can no longer claim the remittance basis of taxation.

36

Currently, UK nationals leaving the UK to live abroad permanently are deemed domiciled in the UK (so liable to inheritance tax on worldwide assets) for at least three years. This will increase to five years. If they return to the UK, their domicile of origin immediately reverts, under all circumstances. Further consultation will take place before this becomes law. This will affect individuals with excluded property trusts, since they will no longer have excluded property status on their return to the UK. Anyone who may move

back to UK needs to review their tax planning in advance. UK property owned by non-UK domiciles will become subject to UK inheritance tax even if held indirectly through opaque structures like non-UK companies or partnerships, or excluded property trusts. This proposal will be subject to consultation. Personal tax The personal allowances will increase to £11,000 from April 2016/17, and the 40% tax rate will apply for incomes over £43,000. The 10% dividend tax credit will be replaced by a new £5,000 tax-free allowance on dividend income. There are some changes affecting rental income, and tax relief for pension contributions will be further limited. Anyone who may be affected by any of these changes should seek personalised expert advice. Remember you also need to consider your tax and estate planning in Portugal. Summarised tax information is based upon our understanding of current laws and practices which may change. Individuals should seek personalised advice. Premier FX's Account Manager Cathryn Evans keeps us up to date with the latest currency news.

s in July, Greece is still headlining the financial news. It was thought that once an agreement had been made the Euro would strengthen, this has not been the case. Even though a loan has been granted it still doesn’t mean Greece is out of the woods. Negotiations will resume which may keep the Euro weak. Another factor in this is interest rates in the UK, USA and EU. Britain and the United States could start to raise interest rates before the EU, driving investment in a currency due to a higher return. With the EU still pursuing a

Quantitative Easing programme, rates are likely to stay low for a while for them, meaning investors are likely to move away from the Euro into the GBP and USD, keeping them at good levels. Other factors still influencing exchange rates but not making headlines are the yield on German government bonds, ECB policy, US Fed policy and of course economic data releases. When ECB policy or data releases come out we can see dips in the market; a key time for those looking to return funds to the UK. If you are in this situation, talk to us. We can find out your needs, keep a close eye on the rate, look out for those

dips and help you return your funds at the right time. The 2nd half of 2015 is proving just as volatile in the exchange market as the first. Markets can be erratic and difficult to second guess. Long Term Rentals: Questions and Answers

s you may know from our previous articles, since the 31st of March 2015 there are several new obligations for Landlords that rent properties long term. These new tax requirements are raising many questions amongst landlords. Am I obliged to issue electronic rental receipts? Can I authorize a third party to issue a rental receipt on my behalf? Will he have access to my tax information? How can I register rental contracts on the tax portal? We will try in this article to let you know the answer to some of the most common questions arising from this. But first of all please be aware, to avoid confusion, that this article refers to long term rentals and it’s not applicable to owners that rent to tourists (short-term lets). The short term or holiday lettings, require a Local Lodging license and we have outlined this subject in other articles. Please email us and ask for our leaflet if you rent your property to tourists and we will send you information on this matter. And always remember that if you rent a property in Portugal, no matter if long or short term, that income needs to be declared in Portugal. It’s

not a matter of personal preference, it’s a matter of law. I have a house for rent. Is it mandatory to issue an electronic tax receipt? Yes, for most people. Those that are obliged to issue electronic receipts for rental income are all the landlords who have rental income (category F), and needs to be issued once the rent is received or made available as an advanced payment. From when do I need to start issuing rental receipts? This requirement came into effect in May, but landlords can continue to use paper receipts until November without paying the fine. Electronic receipts are required for incomes above 69.87 euros per month. What if chose to declare under category B? If you have opted for the taxation as a business activity (category B), you are required to issue invoices every month and this also needs to be reported to the tax office. Who is not required to pass electronic income receipts? Landlords who opt for category F may be exempted from

passing the electronic income receipt in two situations: if in 2014, their rental income was lower than 838.44 euros and cumulatively don’t have an official electronic mailbox. Are also not required to issue electronic receipts, the owners older than 65 years (as of 31-12-2014) and can continue to pass paper receipts. It should be stressed that, despite not being mandatory, they can chose to do it electronically. Only as of May do I have to go electronic receipts? The law started as of 31st of March 2015 and entered into force in May. However, with effect from the 1st of January 2015, which means that paper receipts for rental income for the months January to April, will have to be re-issued in May 2015. What happens if you only start issuing electronic receipts from November? Although the law produces effects from May, the government has offered a trial period for landlords to adapt to the new reality. So, until November there will be no tax fines, but don’t be fooled it’s still necessary to issue the electronic

receipts of the months between January and October, together with the receipt of November. I rented a property after March 31 2015 (after the new law). What should I do to issue electronic receipts of income? In this case it is mandatory to submit your contract electronically and pay the stamp duty online. Basically, the main difference is that before you were required to go to the tax office, pay the stamp duty and register the contract, now everything is done online and the tax office is not allowed to accept your contract. Please remember, we have special packages tailor made for landlords which allows them to have peace of mind, while we deal with all their tax affairs, assuring that you are compliant with the law. New campaign kicks off with Benfica

O

n Friday evening the 7th August the Eagles fly into town as SC Olhanense entertain Benfica ‘B’ in the first game of the new season. The Segunda Liga (2nd Division) opener is being shown live on SportTV. There is sure to be much interest as manager Cristiano Bacci attempts to mould his new squad into a team capable of maintaining the momentum that saw the ‘rubro-negros’ end last season with victories over the top two teams. With the budget having been slashed from €1.2m to €600,000 many players have left. Twelve new signings, nine from the lower divisions, will be keen to impress as some will undoubtedly be joining the senior professionals in the new look team. In an effort to recruit new socio-members the club are offering a special season ticket package, which includes admission to 23 league games and a twelve month membership of Sporting Clube Olhanense, for just €184 which equates to €8 per game. In addition when not being used the season ticket can be passed to a friend. Furthermore a brand new red & black stripe first

team shirt, sold separately for €60, is included free-of-charge. Three pre-season friendlies, against Chesterfield at Colina Verde Golf & Sports Resort lost 0-2, San Roque (Lepe, Spain) away won 1-0 and Atlético (Lisbon) lost 0-1; have produced plenty of commitment, endeavour and some good football but there is still a desperate need to add fire power to a lightweight forward line. Former Liverpool, Aston Villa and Wales international Dean Saunders, manager of Chesterfield, was very complementary about the facilities at Colina Verde and added, “this has been the perfect start of our campaign to challenge for the Football League Division One title.” The game in Spain was played on a poor surface but there were encouraging signs as Olhanense shifted the ball about with precision and speed. In Lisbon, fellow Segunda Liga rivals Atlético may have won the game but it was the Algarve side who turned on the style. Olhanense’s latest recruit is 25 year-old Portuguese midfielder Jose Coelho who has a wealth of experience having trained with FC Porto, Inter Milan (Italy) and Benfica before playing for Penafiel,

Freamunde, Sheriff (Moldova), Fatima, Paços de Ferreira and latterly Felgueiras 1932 in the National Senior Championships. Other newcomers who have impressed are 25 year-old midfield Ousmane Baldé (ex.Tours, France), 24 year-old winger Januário (ex. Moncarapachense) and 22 yearold Italian defender Frederico Virga (ex.Folgore Caratese, Italy).

Players paws for black cat

E

lderly Walking Footballers dashed to the rescue of a fierce feline that had been entangled in a goalnet at the José Arcanjo Stadium, Olhão. The poor animal was stuck fast and had probably been there for some hours. The first attempt to rescue the feline only drew copious quantities of blood! Towels and some discarded foam building boards isolated the animal’s limbs whilst the group’s most expendable player went to work with scissors and soon had the distraught animal free to scurry off out of harms way. The cat was too young to join the over 50 years age group and in addition a ‘claws in the contract’ bans players with four legs!

Footgolf gains more followers

icking a football around a golf course and getting it into a bigger hole is gaining more-and-more popularity. A record entry of thirty-one, including a number of children, converged on the Colina Verde Golf and Sports Complex, Maragota last month. The youngest competitor to complete the course was George Lythgoe who received a special award. The winning team of Christine Wright, Brian Caldwell, Kai Diprose and Jonathan Syed recorded an aggregate score of 182 (par 168). Jonathan Syed led the field with an impressive level par for the twelve hole course. Andy Powell, playing his first ever round of FootGolf, recorded a superb round of forty-four whilst Tanya Fox took the Ladies Individual Award with a round of fortyseven. The next FootGolf Challenge at Colina Verde will be on Wednesday 19th August. For further information: C h r i s t o p h e r. wright@hotmail. co.uk

The right hand again!

This months article from Keith Ashdown, golf professional at Benamor golf.

I

Right hand practice; Leran to use your right hand. Note: Left hand golfers practice with your left hand.

t is quite surprising how many golfers, who think they use their right hand too much, cannot in fact hit a decent shot at all with this hand alone on the club. I have tested this out with dozens of golfers. He usually thinks his right hand is responsible for doing too much work in the swing, and therefore causes all the poor shots. Over the years I have acquired a lot of knowledge of hand action and hand training. So many golfers think it is sufficient to perform an action which looks like the ideal golf swing, but when

a golfer is made to hit balls with the right hand only he is quickly made aware of the weaknesses
