... to our birthday issue. That’s right, we have been publishing the East Algarve magazine for one year this month. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all our advertisers for their support throughout the past year, without them this magazine simply wouldn’t exist! We are often asked ‘Where can I pick up your latest issue’. Well, along with our regular outlets, all of our advertisers are supplied with copies for their customers. This month, we meet Kelly and Pedro, owners of the new hearing centre in Tavira, chat to Carolyn Brown and the Estrelas team, and bring you a delicious duck recipe from Restaurante Museu do Vinho. We also have a detailed guide to plant propagation from Gardening expert Mark O’Shaughnessy. We hope you enjoy our December issue, have great Christmas and a prosperous new year.

I hear that the weekly paper ‘Get Real’ is now only available online. As I do not have access to the internet, I feel slightly overlooked and very disappointed. I sincerely hope that publishers don’t see this as the future of magazines as I don’t think it substitutes an actual magazine you can sit down and read over a coffee. Advertisers will be losing out on my custom and more importantly for me, I have lost a good source of information. My wife and I enjoy reading your magazine, keep up the good work. George, Manta Rota Dear George, Thank you for your letter, we agree that you can’t beat a real magazine or newspaper, and will continue to publish in print for as long as we have advertisers, and readers who enjoy our magazine. Having said that, the internet does offer many benefits and we are in the process of re-launching our website. This will give readers the opportunity to read back issues and also give more exposure for our Foradvertisers.thoseof you who are able to, check out www.eastalgarvemag. com. However, if you are not online, we hope you continue to enjoy reading the East Algarve magazine.

Located only a couple of kilometres from Faro airport and at a cost of 35 million Euros, the flagship hospital offers an eight bed intensive care unit, an operating block with nine surgery halls and the latest, unrivalled technology. On call will be a total of 125 doctors, with staff from the Algarve, Lisbon, Britain, Germany and Holland. The hospital has even employed a chef who has previously worked for the Sheraton hotel in Albufeira. T his month we were delighted to hear that money raised at the charity quiz run by Terry and Andy Sharpe, held at the Quinta Fonte do Bispo, went towards buying four booster seats for the Loulé childrens home. Terry and Andy also raised enough money to buy the children tickets to go and see the pantomime Pinocchio in Faro. It is a fantastic cause and Terry would like to thank all the quizzers for their help and continued support. For more information about the quiz, or the childrens home please call 281 971 484.

They are the Regional Tourist Authority, the regional environmentalist organisation Almargem, and the Portuguese Society for the Study of Birds.

R ainfall in the region is 50% down according to data from the National Meteorological Institute. As usual there is concern over water supply and water levels in the local dams.

Elizabeth Beaupied took some time out this month to visit family. Although not all went to plan, things could have been worse... T his morning I’m sitting in a Ramada Inn in Medford, Oregon, USA, (elevation 421 meters) waiting for the transmission in our 1991 Ford to be replaced. It gave out last evening, minutes after crossing the 1314 meter Siskiyou Summit into California. An hour earlier we’d stopped for gas and coffee in Grant’s Pass (elevation 293 meters), and there were signs then that something was not right. We got towed back to Medford around 6:00 and Earl was on the phone at 8:00 this morning, calling garages for estimates on cost and time to repair. There’s nothing to do but wait for the tow truck to arrive and cart the old girl to the repair shop, and hope they’ll be able to get her done by Friday afternoon. This will give us enough time to reach San Francisco, where Earl’s sister has organized a small party, reuniting that part of our family with whom we spent many wonderful summers sharing a cabin in Soda Springs, California (elevation 2042 meters). Soda Springs is about 15 kilometers west of Donner Pass (elevation 2160 meters). We drove down this pass nearly every day of our vacations, heading to Donner Lake (elevation 1809 meters), where we adults would spend the days lazing in the hot mountain sun while our kids (five young cousins) would swim and play for hours in some of the coldest water I have ever dipped my toes in. From my beach chair at the water’s edge, I would contemplate the lake’s eastern shore and the story of the Donner Party, another stranded group of travellers. In May,1846 a collection of emigrants set off from Independence, Missouri and basically everything that could go wrong on their westward migration did. From a late start to missed rendezvous with guides, to losing most of their livestock and pack animals before reaching the Sierra Nevadas, these unfortunate people found themselves snowed in, and stranded at the east end of the lake by fall, and winter snowstorms that held them there until rescuers found them in the spring of 1847.

A wide and eclectic range of new and used books in the English language, as well as a generous helping of used and collectable books in Portuguese and French. Also a wonderful selection of children’s books. Special orders and book finding service available. Gift certificates.

George Stewart’s “Ordeal By Hunger” and “Desperate Passage” by Ethan Rarick are two superb tellings of this forlorn group’s struggle for survival under such horrific conditions. Ideal for anyone at all interested in the history and romance of the American west and the people who settled it. I guess there are worse things than spending a few idle days in a Ramada Inn in Medford. Elizabeth Beaupied, A Lura dos Livros, Tavira

Kelly and Pedro, proud owners of the brand new hearing center bring a new and much needed facility to Tavira.

Apartnershipsound K elly Roberts moved to Portu gal with her parents 24 years ago where she has lived ever since. In 2004 she left for England to be trained as a fully qualified hearing aid dispenser and later returned to work with a major hearing aid company in the Algarve & Lisbon. It was while working for that company that she met her part ner Pedro Martins, also a qualified hearing aid dispenser.

After the birth of their daughter Noa Lily, both Kelly and Pedro decided it was time to start up their own busi ness and, having visited Tavira be fore, decided it was a perfect loca tion for this new chapter in their life together. Many of their previous pa tients, Tavira residents, and hearing aid users, had complained they felt they didn’t have the right support due to not having a hearing center close by, and Kelly and Pedro soon realised there was a large gap in the market for this type of business. So the decision was made, and the family, together with their daughters Jaya and Noa Lily, made the move to Tavira. Wanting to involve the com munity in the set up, local contrac tors were hired to undergo the huge renovation project. After months of hard work, they are now both proud to announce the opening of C.A.T. – Centro Auditivo de Tavira. Situated in the heart of town, the centre has beautiful views over the town hall, square and the river. Talking to Kelly about what will set this hearing centre apart from the others, she told us that being a lo cal, family run practice, they are able to offer a very personalised service not available from faceless National companies, and that all products on offer come provided with a lifetime of backup and service. Hearing assessments and the fitting of digital hearing instruments are the core business but CAT-Centro Auditivo de Tavira also offers other services including acoustic imped ance tests, custom-made earplugs, repairs, batteries, accessories and tinnitus management. Actually any thing that comes under the umbrella of Sohearing!ifyou, or somebody close to you has started suffering from hear ing loss, or already wear hearing aids, visit Kelly and Pedro at CAT – Centro Auditivo de Tavira, Praça da Republica n.o12 2.oDto, Ta vira (in front of the town hall) or call 289 090 663/913 796 640.

This month we met up with Carolyn Brown, originally from Loch Lomond in Scotland, a successful massage therapist, to find out more about her background and her company Estrelas’ philosphy.

Carolyn’s training began by completing various massage courses, including aromatherapy, Swedish, sports and Indian head massage. She is also a qualified personal trainer. On completion of her studies, she went on to spend several years on five star cruise ships, managing the spas, performing massage treatments, teaching classes such as yoga, pilates, body combat, aerobics and also personal training sessions. Back on dry land, Carolyn spent the next 2 years running her own massage business in Sweden.

Meet Carolyn Brown, owner of Estrelas, a mobile health, massage and beauty service, with news of the soon to be launched ‘Party Estrelas’.

W ho doesn’t need a little pampering in life, time to relax and feel energised?

Startreatment

Having enjoyed many summers here in the Algarve, Carolyn decided to move here 3 years ago, choosing Tavira as her ideal location. During this time she built up such a good client base, that 18 months ago she decided to launch her own company Estrelas. Estrelas meaning ‘stars’ in Portuguese, reflects the star quality service provided. She currently has several therapists, masseurs, a beauty therapist and a personal trainer all on call. They offer various massage treatments, including facials and physiotherapy. The team are mobile and visit private homes, hotels, pousadas and also work with villa holiday companies. They cover a wide area, from Quinta do Lago to Spain, although other areas would also be considered. Fitness classes such as Salsa, Legs/Bums/ Tums, and Body Combat are also available, subject to demand, at the Colina Verde Golf Hotel, close to Moncarapacho. Beach Estrelas was successfully launched this summer on the island of Tavira, giving relaxing massages to locals and holidaymakers alike. The philosophy of Estrelas is to provide a first class service in the comfort of your own surroundings, with friendly, efficient and capable people available to you to enhance your leisure time and to introduce fun, relaxation and quality treatments. Estrelas have vast range of clients, which has included royalty, and they work hard to ensure the best possible service.

MAIN CHURCH Built in the 16th century on the site of a medieval chapel, the church was rebuilt in the 18th/19th centuries. With an interesting bell-tower, the interior consists of three naves and the altars have 19th century retables. There are statues from the 17th/18th centuries. The pulpit is made of local marble and you can also see the tomb stone of the couple who founded the chapel.

Santa Bárbara De Nexe

Estói is a small peaceful village situated between São Brás de Alportel and Faro. Estói does not have any beach to offer its visitors. However, it does have astonishing architecture and cultural heritage. The streets and houses of this ancient village, with their whitewashed walls, squat chimneys and small gardens full of trees and flowers, retain much of the tra ditional character of the Algarve. One of Estói’s most notable sights is its Palace, in a Ro coco style, with beautiful gardens, it really is worth a vis it. Also not to be missed are the Roman Ruins of Milréu. The renovation and the re-building of the palace in Es toi are close to completion. The objective of the project was to establish a historical Pousada within a modern hotel complex. The Pousada is set in the old 19th cen tury Estoi Palace, which used to belong to a wealthy pharmacist, the Viscount of Estoi. The palace is a huge building, its exterior partially covered with tiles bearing floral decoration and depicting a variety of scenes. In side, the decoration on the plaster ceilings - the finest in the Algarve -is stunning, as is the furniture, chapel, dining rooms, and the two tea pavilions. The gardens are in the late romantic style, set out on different levels, with flights of steps, lakes and statues of marble and pottery. After the Viscount’s death, the palace remained in the family until 1987, at which time it was acquired by Faro Municipal Council. Besides the main building, the tea pavilions and Versailles-style gardens are still being renovated, a project signed by Gonçalo Byrne, a famous Portuguese architect. The Palace is open to the public and beverages or light lunches are available.

MAIN CHURCH Built in the 15th century, the church underwent a num ber of alterations in the 18th century. It has an interior consisting of three naves, with ogival arches. The walls are decorated with polychrome tiles and above the tri umphal arch there is a panel depicting the coronation of Santa Bárbara by two angels (1702). For centuries, it has been known for the warmth of its people living in the hamlets spread throughout the territory and also known at international level for its musical accordion traditions and artistic stonework. Human presence in Santa Bárbara can be traced back to approximately 30,000 years ago. In the 14th century, the construction of the Mother church began on the site of an ancient chapel that became a centre of regional

A Bronze Age fort, subsequently used by both the Phoe nicians and the Romans, is an example of how ancient this village is. Surrounded by fields and hills covered in fruit trees, Santa Bárbara de Nexe has proved very pop ular with expats from all over Europe, due to it’s large exposure to stunning sea views, ideal positioning be tween Faro, Loule and S. B de Alportel. Being only 10 kms from Faro international airport, beautiful beaches and golf courses, the district is predominantly rural but is also well-served by good local roads.

processions and where, it was said, that ‘miracles took place’. Santa Bárbara de Nexe became a parish in the 16th century. The chapel of Sta. Catarina dos Gorjoes is a beautiful church dating from the 15th century, and has a single nave and main chapel. It is more of a popular chapel rather than a high, formal church, but its unusual lines make it somewhat special. The Land of Nexe celebrates the New Year with its own special tradition. In the first days of January the “Charolas” or groups of men and women accompanied by instruments (accordion, casta nets, tambourines, and triangles) take part in Festivals in Bordeira, Santa Bárbara de Nexe and surrounding vil lages, and play at the house of friends or local cafes in dramatic improvisations that celebrate the new year and the presence of old friends in an atmosphere of happi ness and solidarity, the odd social or political quip being thrown in for good measure.

The “Charolas” are the oldest and most authentic of the cultural traditions found in the Land of Nexe, as they are the only groups in the region to have their own tra ditional poetry, improvisation and a marked absence of religious symbolism. In the sweeping landscape that characterizes this rural part of the Algarve, the Land of Nexe is an authentic and peaceful Mediterranean amphitheatre tucked into the foothills of the Sierra of Monte Figo. There are spec tacular views from here to the Ria Formosa and the At lantic Ocean, appreciated by all who visit. Paths crisscross the land with ancestral windmills as points of reference along these ancient rural byways. Relax and wander alongside the beautiful Mediterranean flora and fauna, wonderful landscapes blending with the heritage of windmills and ancient wells. Estói’s Main church Estói’s square

Page 18 Be prepared for your sale with documents signed and sealed! O nce you have decided to sell your property, there are a lot of issues to consider. Market timing, choosing the right agency to market your property, determining the asking price and preparing your home for viewings. There are less obvious steps to be taken care of, ideally before putting your house on the market. Prepare the sale of your property from day one, including the documentation. Make sure you have all the documents of your property readily available and updated in your name. The description of your property should be realistic, and must be consistent throughout the various documents. The last thing you want to happen to you when you have accepted an offer from a prospective buyer is for a deal to cool off and the offer to be withdrawn, just because a promissory contract could not be completed and signed, due to incorrect or missing documentation. This is especially true in a slow market when buyers tend to be more cautious or worried than during normal market conditions. Which documents do you need and where to get them? You need a non-certified copy of the Land Registry (Certidão do Registo Predial), the document of the local tax department (Caderneta Predial) and the utilisation license of your property (Licença de utilização), REAL ESTATE LIVE, INVEST AND ESCAPE GOLF PROPERTIES VILLAS APA R T M E N T S TO W N H O U SE S LPLOTSHV927

which can be obtained at the local town hall. If you have a swimming pool, it should be mentioned on the utilisation licence. Many properties in the countryside use water from a private borehole. You need a license from the Ministry of Environment (Ministério do Ambiente) to use the water from the borehole. If your property was built after the 31st of March 2004 your property has a ‘passport’ called Ficha Técnica de Habitacão. Without this document you can’t sell your property. In addition, since January 2009 all properties need an energy efficiency qualification (Certificado Energético) at the time of the deed. As this law is fairly new, most vendors will not have this certificate yet. There are various companies that offer such certification-services, but be careful about their fees. For the same property the price can differ from €250 up to €400. If you are in a hurry be aware, small local companies often take between 3-5 working days whereas large companies may require up to a month to issue the certificate. At the time of the deed you need the original documentsnot copies- some of which must be recently updated and not older than 6 months. If you have questions and/or are not sure you have all necessary documentation and/or if the information in the documents of your property are accurate and consistent, contact us.

A local agents view...

For example, instead of spending let’s say €350,000 on a two bedroom apartment on a development where you can listen to your neighbours bar- b-que, children screaming in the communal pool, expensive community charges, and a change of neighbour every other week, you can have your own “portion of paradise”, with perhaps three bedrooms, private pool, beautiful views and total privacy. Naturally, if you wish to achieve a rental income, typically, 3 or 4 bedroom villas can command between €1000 to €2000 per week rental yield in peak season and, with a larger budget, the true return on investment really kicks in. Even though we have been experiencing tough economic times, due to demand in these beautiful and character rich areas, property prices have held their own and offer excellent value for money and capital growth. There are sadly, casualties of the economic situation and, we are fortunate to be amongst the favoured agents for selling these properties. If investors are looking for “distressed sales” we have a number of clients that have instructed us to secure buyers for their homes at discounted values for those clients that can proceed quickly with their purchase.”

As one of the oldest real estate agents in Portugal, established for over 20 years, Algarve Homes is located in the pretty country town of Santa Barbara de Nexe. The business is a small family run real estate agency that prides itself on simple old fashioned values of honesty, hard work and sound professional advice for both vendor and seller. In a recent interview with the Managing Director, Julian Lewis, when asked for his opinion on why clients should consider these areas, he commented... “Both Santa Barbara de Nexe and Estói enjoy many similarities and really offer the discerning buyer a true taste of Portugal away from the bustle and glitz of the coastal resorts which are so similar to so many other areas. The towns both offer close access to the airports, local beaches and golf courses together with a wide array of quality and reasonably priced Portuguese Asrestaurants.faras value for money is concerned, I have experienced a number of buyers who perhaps have historically considered the areas of the coastal resorts and, whilst comparing what their Euros can purchase just 15 minutes inland, the choice is simple.

FUNDING. Be prepared. The phrase most heard when renovating is: “It cost twice as much as I thought it would.” Set yourself a budget and build in some contingency funding - 15 per cent of the total cost is a good guideline. People are often side-tracked by beautiful domed ceilings and original floor tiles; if the electrics and plumbing are no good then you could find yourself running into financial problems later on.

B

MONEY PIT! In an older property you should be prepared for anything. Don’t be afraid to make several visits to the property with tradesman before making an offer so you’re aware of what your letting yourself in for! Tradesmen should not charge for estimates, and will be more beneficial to you than a surveyor in the early stages of negotiations.

MANAGING THE PROJECT. A project manager will liaise with the builder and ensure work is carried out to a specification. You may find out it works out cheaper to use an English speaking project manager who knows local tradesmen that you might have trouble communicating with.

ored, fancy yourself as a budding property developer, why not buy a property cheap, renovate it and sell it for profit or for rental? Locations such as the historical centre of Olhão are slowly being transformed by canny ex-pats who can see the benefits from renovating a property and then renting for holidays. Just remember these tips so you don’t fall foul of the property developer’s nightmares.

EMPLOYING TRADESMEN Decide exactly what work you want to undertake before asking for any quotations. Write a clear specification; it need not be technical, but it should detail the work you want to carry out. Good communication and a professional relationship are very important if you want the project to run smoothly. If this all sounds like something you would be interested in why not contact us and find out what is available. We have properties starting at just over €50,000, and now is a great time to buy and make a profit. Manorpark properties

If it’s stocking fillers you’re after, why not visit the QM garden centre for value for money pampering gifts, diaries and novelty items; you can also buy large tins of chocolates, advent calendars, Christmas cards and crackers. QM also stock a variety of keenly priced stuffing, cranberry sauce, mince pies and all the little extras to make a special lunch on Christmas day. For more unusual hand made gifts, why not visit Casa das Portas in Tavira near the Roman bridge. The supermarkets have some good discounted toys and the toyshop in the new Tavira Forum is well stocked, the staff are very helpful and course they gift-wrap everything for you. For electronics and games, which can be pricey here, log onto www.play.com who deliver many items to the Algarve for free, or try www.amazon.co.uk for gift ideas including books, gadgets, jewellery and toys, but be careful to check the postage cost and estimated dispatch date. If possible, it can be faster to send the item to a friend or relative in the UK, and cheekily ask them to post it out for you. Alternatively, if you have the time, why not make your own gifts, giving that personal touch which is always greatly appreciated. Here are some ideas for a Christmas hamper, home made chutney; cakes and biscuits are always well received. Not only does a home made hamper make a lovely gift, it also means you can have a lot of fun (and save money) by making and packaging your own produce.

Court Eastalgarve_Issue12.indd 26 1/12/09 19:21:08

Propagation, the practice of making more plants, can be accomplished in several ways. Since unusual plants are sometimes expensive or hard to find, it’s handy to know how to start your own. Once you can propagate the plants you want, there’s very little to stand in the way of your growing uncommon beauties. The following is an introduction to propagation from seed, from cuttings, and by division.

First, the feeling of satisfaction is enormous. You can look at your garden and say to yourself, “I did this, from start to finish.”

Second, it’s much cheaper to buy seed than to buy small plants. A package of seeds usually costs less than two Euros, even for exotic varieties. And quite a few unusual plants are not easy to find, whereas the seeds tend to be more readily available. Read the Seed Packet. Most seed packets provide good information, so be sure you read their planting instructions before proceeding. Moisten the Mix. Next, purchase sterile soilless seedstarting mix and pour it into a large bucket, add water, and stir. The mix should be moist enough to hold a clump when you squeeze it but not so wet that water drips out of the clump when you squeeze. Fill your flat (or large pot) with soil and firm it down. The soil level should reach to half an inch below the edge of the flat Sow the Seeds. Most seeds do not require light to germinate, so they should be covered with a thin layer of the soilless medium. A good general rule is that a seed should be buried as deep as it is large. For example, the very small seeds of the moss rose (Portulaca grandiflora) need to be covered by only a very thin layer of the mix. If you’re planting morning glory (Ipomoea alba), a seed the size of a kernel of corn, cover with about a quarter inch of mix. If seeds are large, poke holes in the seed-starting mix with the end of a pencil. Make the holes about half an inch deep and space them two inches apart. Place a seed in each hole and press the mix over the seed with your finger. If the seeds are small, take a ruler and press a long trench, about a quarter-inch deep, into the mix. Scatter the seeds into the trench, then press the mix over the seeds. The satisfaction of growing your own plants can make your gardening an even more enjoyable experience, whilst saving you tea, exclusive coffees, hot Gran Plaza, Food

1st floor,

You may want to invest in an inexpensive germination/ propagation unit, which includes a clear plastic cover for keeping ambient humidity high. Once seeds have sprouted and top growth is approaching the plastic, it’s time to remove the dome and think about transplanting. Some propagation setups include an insulated base and heat mat, which is especially handy for starting seeds of plants that require extra warmth and for rooting Forcuttings.thewidest selection, it’s best to start annuals from seed. Fortunately, they are some of the easiest plants to grow. Provide Moisture. Your seed packet should tell you how much time the seeds need to germinate. During this time it’s important to keep the starting mix moist but not wet; high humidity is also helpful. Check the surface of your mix every day, and if the top feels dry to the touch, water it. Since you don’t want to disturb the seeds, be sure to water gently. Try breaking the force of the water by pouring it through your fingers or by using a rose attached to your watering can. Transplant the Seedlings. The first leaf (or pair of leaves) to emerge is called the cotyledon, which means seed leaf. This is not a true leaf but was once contained inside the seed as a source of nutrition for the young plant. The next leaves to emerge are true leaves. When seedlings have two sets of true leaves, they are ready to be transplanted, either into the garden or into larger pots, where their roots can grow without becoming entangled with those of other plants. If you’re moving plants from a flat into individual pots, be sure not to use pots that are too large. A pot two inches in diameter is large enough for most seedlings. Lift the seedling out of the flat with a spoon, being careful to disturb the roots as little as possible. Hold the seedling by a leaf, never by its stem. If you damage a leaf, the plant can grow another. If you damage the stem, you kill the plant. Plant Outdoors. Once the risk of frost in your area

If your seeds require light to germinate, like the seeds of stock (Matthiola longipetala) or flowering tobacco (Nicotiana), don’t cover the seeds with any mix. Small seeds can be sown in a trench but should not be covered. Large seeds can be pressed into the top of the mix and left uncovered. If you’re sowing seeds in individual pots, you must decide how many seeds to plant per pot. If seeds are large, try one or two per pot; if they’re small, try more. Seed-Starting Tools

Here’s what you’ll need to get started: a lightweight sterile seed-starting mix; a few flats or large, shallow pots; some small biodegradable pots (no larger than two inches in diameter); and your seeds. Seed-starting mix. Garden soil and many potting-soil mixes are too heavy for starting seeds. They retain so much moisture that the seeds can rot. A lightweight seed-starting mix is usually soilless and will keep seeds moist but not too wet. Flats. A flat is a rectangular pan with drainage holes in the bottom that can be used for starting lots of seeds at once. It’s usually about two or three inches deep. Start one kind of seed per flat, because different seeds have different cultural requirements. If you don’t have a flat, you can use a large, shallow pot. This will be the germination site only. Once your seeds have one or two sets of true leaves, you’ll move them up to larger pots or transplant them outdoors. Individual biodegradable pots. Some plants are finicky about being transplanted; they don’t like having their roots disturbed. For these, start the seeds in individual biodegradable pots. When seedlings are ready, you can plant the entire pot in the garden with no root disturbance Afterwhatsoever.planting your seeds, mist the soil surface with water to settle the seeds in place. To keep the humidity high, cover the flat or pot with a piece of plastic wrap or glass, or enclose the entire flat in a clear dry-cleaning bag.

Sowing outdoors is the best way to grow annuals that don’t like to be transplanted, and also those that grow quickly from seed. It’s also a good way to establish annuals around fragile bulbs and dormant perennials. Keep in mind, though, that annuals sown directly outdoors will take longer to flower than those set out as young plants. If you’re sowing seeds in a new flower bed, start by amending the soil with about two inches of compost and some organic fertilizer. Rake these lightly into the soil, sow the seeds, and water. If the seeds need to be covered, rake the spot lightly. For seeds that don’t need to be covered, lightly press the soil with the flat end of a metal rake or other blunt tool after sowing, then water. Self-Seeding Annuals The following plants seed themselves around the garden. To encourage this process, do not deadhead some of the flowers but rather let them go to seed, and leave some mulch-free areas around the plants.

Page 28 Gardens has passed, it’s time to plant your seedlings outside. Transplant seedlings at the same level at which they were originally planted. Do not expose the roots or bury the stem. Remember, your seedlings will grow a lot, so give them room. In most cases, crowded plants don’t get the nutrition or air circulation they need and will not grow to their full potential. Water in your new seedlings and give their roots a few weeks to establish themselves before their first feeding. Sowing Seed Outdoors

Firstly(Pic1)you need to cut the water bottle in half which will be used as the propagator, but remember to put some holes in the bottom to ensure good drainage. In the top section cut four slots about 5cm in each corner which will enable you to fix the top to the Nowbottom.fillthe container with some compost before tamping down so that it firm. Depending(Pic2) on what seeds you are planting you can dib some holes for larger seeds or just sprinkle smaller seeds evenly over the surface. (pic3) Now cover your seeds with a thin layer of compost. Finally before you place the cover back on top water the seeds well, ensuring the compost is well soaked. Once the cover is in place, put the propagator in a warm place but not in direct sunlight and wait for you plants to grow. Remember to name each bottle with what seeds you’ve planted! The final result is a collection of mini propagators which will give you a good selection of plants to pot on when big enough and at a cost of the price of seed and some compost. (Pic5)

Unfortunately, however, even though those figures sound impressive, the chances of becoming a millionaire through the National Lottery are slim – if you buy a £1 ticket for the main Lotto draw on a Wednesday or Saturday, the odds of hitting the jackpot are just one in 14m.

Finance L ast week saw the 15th anniversary of the National Lottery which has created 2,300 millionaires since the first draw on November 19 1994 and surprising new evidence that some numbers are much luckier than others. Superstitious people will not be puzzled to learn that the number 13 has won less often than any other Thenumber.Daily Telegraph publishes a table on line that shows how frequently each number has appeared in the main Saturday and Wednesday Lotto draws to date. The number drawn the most times over the past 15 years is ball number 38 with a total count of 256. See http://tinyurl. com/ylkq8oo for the full article. Number 25 is the second luckiest ball to date with a total of 235. Other lucky balls are number 31, number 23 and number nine, which have been drawn 235, 234 and 228 times in total respectively. By contrast, the number 13 has been drawn only 171 times and number 41 has also proved unlucky so far, having been drawn 176 times in total. While such number-crunching is fun for those who enjoy a flutter, it must be said that past performance is not a guide to the future. According to the lottery operator Camelot, one in every 23,500 adults in Britain is now a millionaire jackpot winner, and more than 4m people win prizes each week on the lottery’s range of drawbased games and scratch cards.

I had a gentleman come in and explain to me what a lot of rogues are running the vehicle excise department here in Portugal. “This is supposed to be a level playing field for all Europeans, yet we come here and they will not obey EU rules and let me drive my car here, I had to take it back to France”. Well, we have been on the receiving end of this one, and I’m afraid that I have to divest my cynical cloak for a minute and become a realist. I was talking to a retired politician last week and I raised this with him. This paraphrases his response. Consider that there are about ten million people in this country and many of them have invested heavily in cars. The wages here are not particularly high, so they have taken out loans significantly longer and larger than the average European car loan. Going back just ten years, the Euro was much lower in comparison to the UK Pound, and the exchange rate has had a knock on effect that the car prices here have become extremely high in comparison with the UK. If the Portuguese Government were to change legislation and allow free import of cars from Europe, some of these cars would hit the market very soon and crash the value of the existing car pool by perhaps fifty percent, taking a large chunk of Portuguese citizen’s wealth with it. Imagine if you will, somebody who bought a 60,000 Euro BMW last year, only to find that due to a legislation change, he has a seven year mortgage on a car that is now only worth 30,000 Euro. Now expand this across the three million families and I think you will agree that the Customs and Excise staff have a sticky problem. Before they consider having a level playing field with Europe, they must provide a level playing field in Portugal that brings the costs of immigrant drivers up to the same as the Don’tlocals.imagine that the Portuguese Government has its eyes closed and is not up with these events. Every year they are fined by the European courts for this activity, and they do not hide the fact. The common belief is that the Government rakes in too much money from this scheme to allow it to stop; perhaps this is correct, but now I hope you understand a secondary issue that deeply affects the personal finances of the Portuguese Population. T he conspiracy behind the Anthropogenic Global Warming myth (aka AGW) has been suddenly, brutally and quite deliciously exposed after a hacker broke into the computers at the University of East Anglia’s Climate Research Unit (CRU) and released 61 megabites of The final nail in the coffin of confidential files onto the internet. When you read some of those files – including 1079 emails and 72 documents – you realise just why the boffins at Hadley CRU might have preferred to keep them confidential. As Andrew Bolt puts it, this scandal could well be “the greatest in modern science”. These alleged emails – supposedly exchanged by some of the most prominent scientists pushing AGW theory. Conspiracy: collusion in exaggerating warming data, possibly illegal destruction of embarrassing information, organised resistance to disclosure, manipulation of data, private admissions of flaws in their public claims and much more. But perhaps the most damaging revelations – the scientific equivalent of the Telegraph’s MPs’ expenses scandal – are those concerning the way Warmist scientists may variously have manipulated or suppressed evidence in order to support their cause. Here are a few tasters. (So far, we can only refer to them as alleged emails because – though Hadley CRU’s director Phil Jones has confirmed the break-in to Ian Wishart at the Briefing Room – he has yet to fess up to any specific contents.) But if genuine, they suggest dubious practices such as: Manipulation of evidence: I’ve just completed Mike’s Nature trick of adding in the real temps to each series for the last 20 years (ie from

the Environment. The nation’s basic environmental legislation dates from 1976. In 2001, 13 of Portugal’s mammal species and 7 of its bird species were endangered, as well as 186 plant species. Endangered species in Portugal include the Spanish Lynx, rosalia, Mediterranean monk seal, and Spanish imperial eagle. The São Miguel bullfinch and three species of turtle (green sea, hawksbill, and leatherback) were endangered in the Azores. The Mediterranean monk seal and four species of turtle (green sea, hawksbill, Kemp’s ridley, and leatherback) were endangered in Madeira. We must garner support for agencies and activist groups that are genuinely helping the environment and can back up their research data. We can all breathe a sigh of relief that the Global Warming Scam has been revealed, but we must remain diligent.

Suppression

The CERES data published in the August BAMS 09 supplement on 2008 shows there should be even more warming: but the data are surely wrong. The best line for the second shot is slightly towards the bunkers on the left, leaving a short pitch onto the green. Anything right of the fairway has a good chance of going into the large lake, which continues all the way to the green. A fair hole which rewards accurate shots, and positive thinking. November was a disappointing month for Olhanense as they were dumped out of the Carlsberg League Cup by lower league opposition. In Liga Sagres a home defeat to Rio Ave was followed by a 0-0 draw in front of over 4000 spectators, at V.Setú bal. A thousand dedicated fans made the 290kms trip north to play their nearest rivals. The towns of Olhão and Setúbal have strong links and there was a carnival atmosphere as many of the fans mingled freely enjoying the food and drink supplied by their hosts. Castro & Miguel Garcia have both recovered from swine flu, and last season’s top goal scorer, Djalmir, was hoping to make a return after seven months out through injury, the best news the supporters could hope for after playing 10 hours without scoring!

The 12th December sees the biggest match of the season as the mighty Benfica will ensure a capacity 15,000 crowd at the José Arcanjo Stadium. Kick-off 9.15pm live on TV.

Five Olhanense players - Castro, João Gonçalves, Rabiola, Ukra and goalkeeper Ventura - were in the Portugal Under 21 squad for the European Championship qualifier played at Wembley Stadium. 30,000 fans, including Brian Evans and several Olhanense fans, enjoyed a great day despite the constant rain. A 1-0 win for England with a a goal from Danny Rose, the Spurs striker who is on loan to Peterborough. On Tuesday 17th November, in the same competition, the José Arcanjo Stadium, Olhão had the honour of staging Portugal’s Under 21 game against group leaders Greece. The home side won 2-1 to inflict Greece’s first defeat in the competition. Olhanens’s Ukra continued his fine performances and is being watched by Newcastle United & Spanish 2nd Division side Huelva Recreativo.

The expat supporters group now numbers over 200 and the new international supporters enamel lapel badges at €2, are selling like hot cakes. All profits from the sale of match day programmes and the badges will be donated to the Olhanense youth section.
