Basking in sunshine for almost 12 months of the year is something neighbouring bars can only dream of. Set on the north side of the river and previously known as the Australia bar – this sun drenched terrace serving snacks and a wide range of drinks - can be found on the approach to Bishop's Square. Boasting all sports from rugby to football, even on the odd day of no sunshine, you have a great reason to join us! Dave's bar is currently co-managed by the ever reliable and absolutely AMAZING Edith and Di, as Dave and Leah returned to the UK. The bar is still going strong with not only music (sometimes dictated by Wayne!), but also a fun and friendly atmosphere to go with the mojo. From Estrella on draft, Vinho Verde by the glass (or bottle), Sangria, G&Ts or a Foxy Mojito – we have an absolutely splendid drink selection, as well as excellent English comfort food to keep you going and ready to explore our beautiful Tavira. With Christmas coming, and the clock ticking – we plan to make December 2021 a month to remember...! The main date for your diary, and one not to forget is Sunday, 19th December - Our Christmas Party. An event not to miss, with a buffet and mulled wine provided, in part to thank the loyal customers of the bar. Keep up to date on our Facebook page, with further dates to be confirmed for the Christmas quiz night and our final leaving celebrations! At the time of writing this, our thoughts go out to everyone during this horrible pandemic which has affected everyone. Safety will always be our number one priority, but second to that, let us try to celebrate the remainder of 2021 in style! And finally, a big thank you to Dave and Leah Barnes for all their efforts since September 2017. In tandem we wish the new owners, Rui and Margarida, the very best of luck for 2022 and beyond. Stay safe, have a great Christmas and See You ALL Very Soon! Keep a special eye out for the brief return of David Barnes too!

Reviving the Parc de Lazer, Mata da Conceição

Locals and Expats pull together & replace the trees destroyed in the recent fires

Lots of volunteers, expats from Italy, Spain and UK and Portuguese citizens from Quinta de Alvisquer Centro Equestre with friends from DunasvaleTerraplanages Lda had a very special day on 13 November 2021 at the Parc de Lazer. We wanted to participate in reforestation of the Mata da Conceição. The fire that started on August 16 in the municipality of Castro Marim, consumed a burned area of around 6,700 hectares. Many of the trees in the Parc de Lazer were completely destroyed or badly damaged by these devastating fires. Antonio Izquierdo Ruiz and Norberto Martins organised the event with permission granted by Tavira Verde and Tavira City Council. During the day we were able to plant over 120 trees, Cork Oaks and Medronho that really grow well together and are less likely to be affected by future fires. Fortunately, the herd of deer that graze there were unaffected by the fire as they were able move to the lakeside. Much of their natural grazing was no longer available so Antonio and Norberto were able to supply hay to help them survive. There is a great deal more to do in the Parc de Lazer even though some trees survived. Tavira City Council will obtain quotes for the complete removal of the worst affected trees. Later this year and in the early part of 2022 we shall be purchasing more saplings and working again to help this beautiful landscape to recover. Volunteers who want to assist and any donations to help with the cost of saplings will be gratefully received. The cast of ‘The Great Pretenders’

Theatre in São Brás

A new play, ‘The Great Pretenders’ takes a comic look at historical facts surrounding the marriage of Queen Victoria’s relative, Prince Carlos of Portugal

Set in the middle of the 19th century, when several noble ladies and princesses had ambitions to marry the prince. An eligible bachelor and heir to the Portuguese throne, his wish to find a suitable bride created a great deal of interest in the royal courts of Europe. The production focuses on two of the most likely candidates, Princess Victoria of Wales and the French Princess, Amelia of Orleans. The rivalry between them results in tension and when Queen Victoria intervenes the situation is potentially explosive! There is a showdown when Britain challenges Portugal over land in Africa and Cecil Rhodes becomes involved in negotiations. His ambitious plans and the love life of Prince Carlos dominate Act Two when a series of events become intriguingly surreal. The cast of twelve, mostly dressed in steampunk costumes, present a play that is both educational and entertaining. Written partly in rhyme by Algarve resident Carolyn Kain, is the seventh in a line of similar plays that examine through history the relationships between Portugal and Britain. Friday December 10th at 7.30pm Saturday 11th and Sunday 12th at 4 o’clock Tickets €10 (public) Amigos €8 Beneficiaries of the show – Bombeiros de São Brás - for the purchase of protective clothing and equipment.
