Faro toasts “success” of 32nd Bike Rally
here may have only been half as many participants as in 2011, when upwards of 31,000 bikers flocked to the Algarve to celebrate the landmark 30th edition of the Rally but the organisers were still pleased with this year’s event, which passed with only minor incidents. In 2011 the Faro Bike Rally smashed all attendance records when more than 31,000 bike aficionados signed in, many to watch headlining band Iron Maiden, a scoop to celebrate that year’s milestone anniversary. This year an estimated 15,000 people visited the event, fewer than last year but still fulfilling the expectations of the organisers, Moto Clube de Faro.
28-year-old man plunged 45 metres from the balcony of a 14th floor holiday apartment in Quarteira and miraculously survived, only because he crashed onto the top of a parked car, Torre Mira Praia, near the bus terminal. The man was still conscious and talking and was taken to Faro hospital for treatment to a broken foot where he was said to be comfortable and still under observation. The roof of the saloon car and the rear window were extensively damaged by the impact and one witness said the noise resembled two cars colliding at high speed. The GNR police are investigating the incident but do not suspect any criminal cause.

A
four star hotel complex equipped with 160 accommodation units, a nine-hole golf course, pools, garden ponds and tennis courts will be built in the Palhagueira (Gorjões) area of Santa Bárbara de Nexe parish, following approval by the municipal authority of Faro. At one point, the future of the project was uncertain due to the Algarve’s Land Management Plan, which forbids constructions on rural land with the exception of isolated hotel
units. Establishing a limit of 160 new beds for the municipality of Faro, a contract was thus signed between the local authority and developers RGM, which specialise in sports and tourist projects. Faro Câmara stressed the importance of this project in the improvement of the local tourist offer, particularly in the hinterland, and described it as a “quality product aimed at a quality market”. With the approval of the plan, the
authority believes the local economy will receive a welcome boost as the project will contribute to a rise in permanent residence as well as in the number of job vacancies. “Approval of this project is of special importance in the current socioeconomic context and shows the municipality’s efforts to promote and facilitate private investment in the council,” the authority said in a press release.

www.eastalgarvemag.com
While there is hope for Brecon, I will do everything I can, because I don’t want to see a young boy suffer. The family will use the money to pay for Brecon to have surgery in the U.S. The treatment should allow him to take his first unaided steps and to run around with his friends Brecon was born with two dislocated hips. He was put in a pelvic harness at five days old, and had had three operations by the time he was 13 months. THE OPERATION THAT ALLOWS DISABLED CHILDREN TO WALK Selective dorsal rhizotomy is a neurosurgical technique used to treat spasticity (increased muscle tone) in the lower limbs. The lower vertebrae are opened to reveal the spinal cord which contain the neurones of the central nervous system. These neurones (bundles of nerve fibres) channel messages between the brain and different areas of the body. Electrical stimulation is used to identify and sub-divide sensory and motor nerves. This process continues until the specific nerves and nerve roots affecting the spastic muscles and which may not be 'transmitting' properly are identified and cut. Due to the size of the nerves and rootlets, this is a very precise procedure and therefore the surgery can last several hours and requires a general anaesthetic. Many months of physiotherapy are needed after the surgery to retrain
the legs. To donate to Brecon's charity fund, please visit http://www.justgiving. com/Brecons-SDR-Journey

S
ometimes you read a story in the press that just hits you where it hurts. In amongst all our busy, self absorbed lives are some truly amazing people who quite clearly put others before themselves. Four years ago, Dan Black was paralysed in a cycling accident. Ever since, he has been raising money for pioneering stem cell treatment which could one day help him walk again. But now, after collecting £20,000, the 25-year-old has given it all away – so a little boy can learn to walk instead. Mr Black abandoned his own dream after hearing about five-year-old Brecon Vaughan, who lives near him just outside Chepstow, in South Wales. Brecon was born with rare spastic diplegia cerebral palsy which causes stiffness in his legs, poor balance and coordination. He has to use a walking frame to get around, and his family are desperately trying to raise money for an operation in America to help him walk unaided for the first time. Mr Black, who is wheelchair-bound, said he made the extraordinary gesture because Brecon had a better chance of walking than he does. ‘I know for me that things aren’t going to get better any time soon,’ he said. ‘I just wanted to do something that could help someone whose life could get better. ‘Brecon can definitely walk if he has the surgery. I wouldn’t wish being paralysed on anyone, so if I can help someone walk, I will.

Sunstroke
Know the Symptoms, Treatments and Dangers!
S
unstroke occurs, when the sun shines on a persons head and parts of the neck for a long period of time. Unlike sunburns, which are caused by overexposure to the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) radiation, a sunstroke is the product of the sun’s long waves which produce heat (heat radiation). When experiencing a sunstroke, the body fails to regulate heat and this will most times end up in a high body temperature and fever. A sunstroke is a type of heatstroke or hyperthermia, where the source of the heat acting on ones body is the sun. Sunstroke is the most common type of heatstroke and occurs due to a combination of dehydration and overheating of the body. What are the usual symptoms? The following symptoms are typical when experiencing a sunstroke: Hot and dry skin, rapid heartbeat and pulse, sweating stops, rapid breathing, increase in body temperature, muscle cramps, headaches, nausea, confusion and dizziness. The symptoms tend to get worse the longer a person is exposed to sunlight and heat. If a person is not treated fast enough and stays in the dangerous environment, his life can be at risk. The loss of consciousness, fever and the damage of organs are the result if not treated. Usually your body cools itself with the secretion of sweat. Depending on the humidity of the air, the sweat on your skin will evaporate faster or slower. The faster the sweat
10
evaporates the faster it will cool your body and help preventing heat related issues such as sunstroke. But if the air is very humid as in tropical regions, the sweat will take much longer to evaporate thus not being able to cool your body fast. In these regions it is very important to always be careful. How to act when experiencing a sunstroke. If you experience any of the following symptoms when outside in the sun and heat, or if you see anybody with these symptoms, get them out of the sun as soon as possible. The best option would be an air conditioned room or anywhere it’s cool. Drink a lot of water, because a sunstroke makes you lose a lot of water in your body. How dangerous is a sunstroke? As mentioned above there are very dangerous things that can happen. A person can lose consciousness, get a high fever and even the damage of organs can occur. If the signs are spotted fast enough and a sunstroke is treated it is usually not a big problem and a day in bed will most times be enough. But if not spotted fast enough and untreated it is a life threatening condition. So always be aware of the signals when in the sun. Children are at risk! Children are even more at risk than grown ups. Kids will suffer much faster from sunstroke and it is important not to leave them in the sun for too long. Also keep in mind to always use sunblock or suncream on your children. Drinking water can
help and will keep you and your kids from dehydrating. Even though the sun is good for us, it has some very nasty side effects that you have to be aware of.

Knowing nature is the best way to respect it
ello East Algarve Magazine readers. August is back, and with it the hot sun. We all want to chill, so nice the sea water and a cool drink with lots of ice! Bugs also need refreshing in this time of year, if you live in the countryside you will be more exposed to an unexpected visit. The Algarve is home to some bugs that do not exist in any other place in Portugal. The Centipedes love dark and moist places, here we have a multicolor that can reach over 25cm in length, greater than some snakes. This bug is poisonous, it
can cause allergies. Scorpions also abound; they are most active at night always looking for cool places; they have large pincers in proportion to the body which are synonymous with weaker poison; and smaller pincers mean a more painful sting. The Violin Spider also exists here, it is very rare but extremely dangerous, very small, very shy, with a body that looks like a violin with legs; always seeking refuge in dark places as such as a shoe. Its bite kills a human if not treated in time, a necrosis begins around the bite, at the end the lungs stop working because of

the poison. Especially in the countryside we should always shake the clothes and shoes before dressing. In case of bite, take a picture of the bug and show it to the doctor in the hospital. These are tropical bugs, many doctors, especially those who are not from here will not be waiting for a situation like this, especially a Violin Spider bite, you will need arachnid serum immediately. Ok, enough… not to forget neither regret! See you in September… Ivo Machado Nobre

ack in 1941 the owner of a Tuna fishing company Jose Silva Ferreira Neto built what is now the Hotel Vila GalĂŠ, Albacora. Originally the complex was designed to be what is known in Portugal as an 'Arraial'. A small village accomodating 4-500 people, consisting of the fishermen and their families. The Arraial included small houses, a church, school, a co-operative where people would trade their goods within the community and working areas. The space was divided into two zones, work; now the area around the pool, and living; now largely hotel accomodation. Areas were separated by a wall (now removed) and also defined by colour; the living area being yellow/ochre, and work areas white. These colours are still used today, although the complex has no division. The accomodation was made up of eleven 'streets' each named after a predominant figure within the community. The 'commander' of the Arraial lived in the main house, along with the accountant, teacher and village hairdresser. The house is located centrally and has a viewing tower (big brother was watching back then too). A pretty little church was added later in 1949. The fishing season started in May, when the nets and boats would be blessed

with salt water, and an offering of a crown made of flowers left on the beach. Part of the Co-operative area now houses a museum. The most impressive exhibit being a huge model of how the Tuna fishing nets would have been set out at sea offering a fascinating insight as to how the process worked. The huge network of nets would slowly be reduced until the fish were confined to a square surrounded by the fishermen in their boats referred to as the 'Almadrava'; the killing place. The fish would thrash around violently, and as they were hooked out of the sea it would turn red with blood. At its height in 1881, the fishery caught 43,000 Tuna fish however due to a change in the route the fish took to breed, in 1971 this figure went down to an incredible one single fish. Today the Hotel Vila GalĂŠ Albacora is a four star hotel, boasting spas, treatment rooms, indoor and outdoor pools and a restaurant. It has managed to hold onto its roots, marrying luxury and history perfectly.

Housed in the old co-operative, the Museum provides a fascinating look into the fishing techniques used, and also every day life of the fishermen and their families in the Arraial.

f you are thinking of buying a property in the Algarve for the first time, most of you will probably focus on how much the property costs and at what interest rate you can get the mortgage. While this is certainly important, when buying a home other fees are often overlooked. Here is a brief breakdown of the most common fees involved when buying a home in the Algarve. In Portugal as in many other countries, most fees and charges associated with buying a property are progressive in relation to the value of the property you are buying. By far the biggest expense is the property transfer tax. This tax is called IMT in Portugal, which

n interesting aspect of tomato history is the classic debate: Is the Tomato a Fruit or Vegetable? I guess that depends on whom you are asking. By definition, a fruit is the edible plant structure of a mature ovary of a flowering plant, usually eaten raw; some are sweet like apples, but the ones that are not sweet such as tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, etc. are commonly called vegetables. Botanists claim that a fruit is any fleshy material that covers a seed or seeds where as a horticulturists point of view would pose that the tomato is a vegetable plant. Until the late 1800's the tomato was classified as a fruit to avoid taxation, but this was changed after a Supreme Court ruling that the tomato is a vegetable and should be taxed accordingly. When it is all said and done, the history of the tomato has classified as a poisonous beautiful plant, a tax-avoiding fruit, and a taxable vegetable. Nonetheless, the tomato is the most popular vegetable in America and enjoyed by millions all over the world. Tomatoes belong to the genus Lycopersicon (Solanaceae family). Evidence supports the theory the first domesticated tomato was a little yellow fruit, ancestor of L. cerasiforme, grown by the Aztecs of Central America who called it ‘xitomatl’ (pronounced zee-toe-má-tel), meaning plump thing with a navel, and later called tomati by other Central American tribes. Aztec writings mention tomatoes were prepared with peppers and salt, likely to be the original salsa recipe. The tomato’s actual origin is thought to be Peru in South America where it grew wild (like a weed) several thousands of years before making its way north to Central America. Presently, eight species still grow wild in the Andes Mountains of Peru. Some believe Spanish explorer Cortez may have been the first to transfer the small yellow tomato to Europe after he captured the Aztec city of Tenochtítlan in 1521, now Mexico City. Yet others believe Christopher Columbus, an Italian working for the Spanish monarchy, discovered the tomato earlier in 1493. The earliest discussion of the tomato in European literature appeared in an herbal written in 1544 by Pietro
33
Gardens
Andrea Mattioli, an Italian physician and botanist, who named it pomi d’oro, golden apple. However, Mattioli’s review was a bit of bad press for the tomato as he and other distinguished authors continued to review the tomato as unhealthy or inedible because of its link to other members of the Solanaceae, notably deadly nightshade (Atropus belladonna) as it resembled the leaves of the tomato plant. Deadly nightshade, a poisonous plant, was used as a hallucinogenic drug and a beauty aid in parts of Europe. Its name “belladonna” (meaning beautiful woman) referred to ladies in medieval courts who applied drops of nightshade extract to their eyes to dilate the pupils, a look considered fashionable at the time. The hallucinogenic nightshade induced visions and a feeling of flying, forever associating it with witchcraft. Old German folklore reveals witches used nightshade to conjure up werewolves. Interestingly, the German name for tomato translates to wolf peach. And in the 18th century, Carl Linnaeus, noting German legend, named the tomato Lycopersicon esculentum meaning edible wolf peach. Although the tomato circulated widely throughout Europe (as an ornamental plant from the New World), suspicion continued and its use in European cuisine evolved slowly over a period two hundred
34
years. The yellow cerasiforme (original stock) that crossed the Atlantic into Europe with Spanish explorers continued to be hybridized into red and orange cultivars by 1623 and extensive hybridization continued in Europe during the 18th and 19th centuries. The first cookbook to mention tomatoes was published in Naples Italy in 1692. By 1752 English cooks used tomatoes in the flavoring of soups, and in 1758 a tomato recipe appeared in The Art of Cookery by Hannah Glass. Still, the tomato remained under suspicion when it returned to North America with colonists in the mid 1700s. Thomas Jefferson served tomatoes and French fries at his table in the 1780s. In 1820, Colonel Robert Gibbon Johnson announced that at noon on September 26, he would eat a bushel of tomatoes in front of the Boston courthouse. Spectators turned out to watch the poor man die, yet they were shocked when he lived. By 1858 a seed merchant named Buist wrote this about the tomato, “There is no vegetable on the catalog that has obtained such popularity in so short a period.“ In 1863, 23 cultivars were listed in the catalog – among them an heirloom tomato named ‘Trophy,’ the first modern-looking, large red, smooth-skinned variety. By 1880 nearly two hundred cultivars had been named, although a study at Michigan Agricultural College in
the late 1880s concluded of 171 cultivars only 61 were truly from different lines. Names of heirloom tomatoes have continued to reflect their own history: ‘Polish’ is said to have been smuggled into the US on the back of a postage stamp in the late 1800s; ‘First Pick’ was grown by generations of the Baptiste family in Reims, France; ‘Besser’ came from Freiburg Germany; ‘Amish Paste’ has been cultivated in Pennsylvania since 1870; ‘Jeff Davis’ a cultivar from Alabama honored the Confederacy; and ‘Ace’ was introduced by the Campbell Soup Company in 1953, to name only a few. Growing Tomatoes The basics of growing tomatoes are relatively simple. Tomatoes like warmth, sun, and plenty of water. They can be grown in the ground and take well to containers, so they can be grown just about anywhere. It may look like work, but once you pop the first ripe fruit into your mouth you'll be hooked. Cultivation Most varieties will just sit there well after the last frost if the night temperature is less than 55 degrees. The more sun they get the more robust the plant, the more they'll flower, and of course those flowers are the source of the fruit. Water well and deeply. Aim for uniformly moist, but not soggy, soil. It makes all the difference in how

well your plants will do. The following may help you with your plants: Tomatoes also like raised beds. The warmer soil is conducive to better growth. Unless there is a reason to not use them, they are definitely the way to go. For indeterminant varieties, build a trellis structure or use a tall bamboo teepee to which you can tie the growing vines. Tomato cages may not be big enough. Bushy varieties do fine with tomato cages. Transplant about two weeks after the last frost date if at all possible. The earlier you can get your plants moved into the garden the better, however, cool or damp weather is not the tomato's friend. Keep soil moist and avoid letting it dry out. Uneven watering can cause a host of problems including blossom end rot. If you intend to fertilize, use a 5-10-5 fertilizer and be sparing. Over fertilization is worse than no fertilization at all. Pinch off suckers that form at the joint between the stem and branch. No point in wasting valuable plant energy on pointless growth. Soil Tomatoes are pretty tough and will

grow in just about any type of soil. However, the richer the soil the more likely you will be able to raise beautiful tomatoes organically. Washed dairy compost is nutrient rich and won't burn young plants. It holds water well too, which is vital for tomato growth and happiness. Mulch to retain moisture with straw. Some folks like to add moisture granules to their soil and pots to retain moisture...especially when they might miss a day or two of watering. Disease and prevention Some tomato varieties are more susceptible to fungus, bacteria, and nematodes than others. And such vulnerability is usually compounded by your growing zone and soil type. Commercial varieties usually indicate on the tag, with a designation like VFN for example, if they are resistant to such systemic diseases as verticillium wilt, fusarium wilt, or nematodes. If your tomato plants get sick and die quickly, the chances are good you have some type of systemic disease. If they lose all their leaves or leaves get curled, yellow, or just drop, it's more likely to be one of the many foliage diseases. Only a professional can diagnose the problem for sure.
To Tavira Look out for the Yellow flags
You may be able to diagnose the problem by contacting your county extension service or through a reliable nursery. As with most things, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Buy disease-resistant plants if you can. Heirlooms may not indicate any disease resistance, but that most likely means they haven't been lab tested for pathogens. Check some of the gardening message boards on the Web for tomato gardeners in your region; you may be able to determine which varieties are more resistant to prevalent diseases or problems in your area. Experience is also a good teacher, which is another reason for growing a several different types of tomatoes. You can prevent foliage disease by keeping the leaves dry, which means watering at the base of the plants, not overhead. Also, a southeastern exposure is ideal because it is both warm without being hot, and the early morning sun dries dew so leaves don't remain damp for long. Also, but no less important, don't water your tomato plants at night unless you are using a drip irrigation system. Space plants so they are well ventilated and not too crowded.

Finance
Can the banks have their cake and lend it out too?
I
have no problem with the Bank of England being in charge of monetary policy and having the responsibility to help deliver stable prices and economic growth. Separately I have no problem with the Bank of England having overall responsibility for the stability of the financial system. The problem is whether it is possible for the Bank to do both at the same time. Developments this week put it into sharp focus. For some months now we have seen the Monetary Policy Committee of the Bank come up with various devices to encourage the banks to lend more to business. The biggest and most ambitious of these is the Funding for Lending scheme, which in effect subsidises the banks if they make new loans, on top of what they have on their books already. In theory it should make it easier for them to lend more and help to get the economy moving. But on Wednesday the Financial Policy Committee, the bit of the Bank charged with financial stability, published a report on the health of British banks – prepared for it, as one of its last acts, by the Financial Services Authority. The raw conclusion was that British banks and building societies need an extra £50bn of capital to cope with possible future losses on commercial property and the eurozone, payments in compensation for past misdeeds, and being more prudent in their calculations of risk. As a result the committee thinks the banks should raise at least £25bn of new capital by the end of this year, and has told another Bank committee, the Prudential Regulation Authority, to make sure
36
Something's got to give
it happens. The PRA should then chase the banks to make sure they carry on raising capital. So on the one hand the Bank is pushing the banks hard to lend more; on the other it is demanding they raise huge amounts of capital, which in effect means that money they might have lent out will instead get diverted to reserves. The timescale must surely mean it is highly unlikely that they will be able to lend more. The Policy Exchange think-tank helpfully pointed out that bank lending to private companies in the UK has fallen by £10bn a year every
year since the start of the financial crisis. "Increasing the capital ratios even further, as the FPC is proposing, will lead to a further lack of credit," it says. "It is the Bank's drive to raise capital ratios that is holding back lending." The relationship might not be as clear cut as this comment suggests. elcome to the next installment in my guide to foreign currency exchange. Last month I explained the benefits of using a currency exchange broker and concluded that it saves you money, your funds are secure, it is quick and free (if you use Premier FX!) So why wouldn’t you use an FX Company? Some people think that FX Companies only deal in large amounts. This is not true. Premier FX certainly has no limits on the amounts that you can transfer. Indeed we have many Clients who transfer small sums each month, as well as pensions and regular incomes. At the other end of the scale we have Clients purchasing houses, cars and boats. Another comment is that it must be complicated and there are many forms to complete and documents to provide. Again, not true. Registering is easy and can even be

done online. All we need is a copy of your passport and, in some cases, a household bill to show your address. Making a transfer is also straightforward. Call your Account Manager and explain what you need to transfer. They will confirm the exchange rate and send you confirmation of what has been agreed. All you need to do is send the funds to our Client Account and we will send to your required destination. Funds can be sent to your account or another of your choice so you can pay your builder, property manager, Solicitor, etc. This process will become even easier soon, but more will follow on that shortly. So now we can add there are no limits, it is easy and flexible to the list of benefits to using a currency exchange broker. Those of you watching the financial news recently will have seen that Mark Carney has taken over as Governor of the Bank of England. Following his first Monetary Policy Committee
meeting the Sterling to Euro exchange rate fall when apparently nothing changed. Unfortunately it is not that straightforward. Whilst interest rates were maintained the Committee did not rule out introducing other measures to kickstart the UK economy. This made investors think twice about investing in the UK and the Pound suffered as a result. What happens now? The market prediction seems to suggest that this downward trend may well continue in the next few months. This is ideal if you need to send funds to the UK. On the other hand, if you need to transfer funds to Portugal then now is the time to speak to your Account Manager to discuss ways in which you can seek some protection from fluctuating and falling rates. There are options available that I will cover in future articles. Mike Skinner 910 028 541 mike.skinner@premfx.com

urther to last months article, where we briefly explained how the new transport law will influence the life of so many companies and individuals, we had several questions from our readers and clients. First of all, let me remind you that this law covers all transport of goods, starting and finishing in Portugal and also, that there will be a transitional period until the 15th of October, to allow all the companies to adjust their systems. Within this transitional period, the tax authorities will not issue any fines. With the alteration of procedures and communication related with this new law it's important to mention that in the cases where, for any reason, there is an alteration of the delivery address, after the start of the transport of goods or the delivery attempt is not successful, it's mandatory to issue a new delivery note. This means that the when the carrier reaches their destination, in case of unsuccessful delivery he needs to issue a new document. Enter th e world’s largest expat survey for your chance to WIN £1,000 cash
alling all expatriates of any nationality! Have you moved overseas for a better quality of life for your family, to pursue a career opportunity or simply for a change of scenery to the place you always adored? If you have then we really want to hear from you and this is the opportunity to make sure your voice is heard. Whatever initiated your move ‘The Expat Survey’ invites you to share your opinions on a variety of different topics. Whilst there are the usual questions requiring you to tick boxes, the research study breaks away from convention and enquires about your experience, whether or not expectations have been fulfilled, what expats miss about home and requests tips and advice for others contemplating a move to a new continent. Your input will make a valuable contribution to understanding how those residing outside their country of origin can be supported, so that organisations and companies that specialise in servicing expatriate communities and individuals can understand their needs better. In a world of rapid change and volatile economies, with the diversification and consolidation of businesses resulting in employment

instability and mounting stress, many have chosen to move overseas in the belief that the grass is greener on the other side. For some a permanent move, for others temporary; in many cases for a life-style change, for others there has been no choice. Whether it has proven to be the best or worst decision you ever made, your feedback is essential. ‘The Expat Survey’ is the largest independent research study ever undertaken on migration and expatriate life. Led by the ex-head of research for BBC World, it does not share any information with third parties and has no links to Governments whatsoever. It is entirely independent and promoted, but not sponsored, by almost 100 publishers and reputable companies servicing expatriates around the world, such as the international accountancy firm Chantrey Vellacott DFK and the specialist expatriate insurance company Clements Worldwide. Conducted as an annual rolling programme the study comprises three surveys – ‘Migration & Lifestyle’ start date 15th July, ‘Retail &
Finance’ start date 10th September and ‘Travel & Health’ start date 5th November 2013. Whilst the main thrust of each survey lasts 8 weeks, all surveys will remain live until 31st December so that a continual collection of responses takes place. Those that complete all three surveys are automatically entered into a prize draw to win £1,000, which you can opt to donate to charity if you wish. Please go to www.theexpatsurvey.com to find out more and complete the first survey which has now gone live. lamboyant Abel Xavier was the surprise choice as the new coach of Olhanense. The 40 year-old former Portuguese international fullback was best remembered for his crazy, fluffy bleached hairstyles. He played for Benfica, Bari (Italy) and PSV Eindhoven before being signed by Everton in 1999 where he made forty-three appearances over three seasons. He impressed Liverpool manager Gerard Houiller who paid one million euros to take him across town in 2002 - the last player to play for both Merseyside clubs and the only player ever to have played in both ‘derby’ games in the same season but for different sides! He later went on to play for Middlesbrough. Xavier first came to prominence as a member of the Portugal U20 side that won the FIFA World Youth Championship in 1991. He has played along side some of the

world’s great players - including Luis Figo, Jorge Costa, Steve Gerrard and latterly David Beckham at LA Galaxy (USA), where he ended his playing career. Xavier said, “I had a wonderful four years on Merseyside and hope to bring some of the dedication and commitment shown by those clubs to the Olhanense set-up.” Italian entrepreneur Igor Campedelli said there were encouraging times ahead but fans must be patient as the squad of youth and experience will take time to be moulded into a cohesive unit. The playing budget for the coming season has been slashed from €4.2mto €2.25m. Isidoro Sousa told the ‘Correio da Manhã’ newspaper that, “It is less than last season, but in the present financial crisis all league clubs are reducing their investment .” OLHANENSE: THE UNITED NATIONS OF THE PREMIERA LIGA With ten nationalities - Portugal, Brazil,

Two promising young players, 23 yearold Vid Belec and 18 year-old Daniel Bessa, have joined from Inter Milan on loan for the coming season. Vid Belec was a protégé of José Mourinho at Inter Milan and when interviewed by Maisfutebol, the popular online sports paper, Belec said, “I was third choice keeper but Mourinho spent a lot of time encouraging me and he is also a great symbol of Portuguese football. I chose Olhanense because I want to play top flight football; the Algarve is a great place to work and live; Xavier is an exciting person to play for and the club is ambitious”. Another great tip from Benamor professional Keith Ashdown.
You are now on a short hole tee, you take a number 4 iron. Well all you should be thinking of is doing your best No. 4 iron swing! You should not have your mind on the hazards around the green.

he most important shot in golf is the one you are about to play. This sounds very elementary to many golfers, but while the star players often try to plan the hole, thinking ahead as it were, really all that matters is to play the shot before you, as well as you can - one shot at a time! I know the top players think before, not after, because they never go over the green if the trouble is cruel, or never get short of it if a water hazard is there. Remember you average golfers, concentrate on the stroke and forget all else.
Mistakes always occur even in the best regulated families, so it is said. And few rounds have ever been played in the history of the game without some errors, don't forget this. As further consolation, Sir Henry and myself agreed on one occasion during a round at Penina many years ago that we play only half a dozen perfect shots in any good round - that is exactly the way we meant to play them. This means that average golfers can almost expect their good shots to be accidents - so regard golf as a percentage game. Good Golfing, Keith
