Castro Marim public lighting vandalism
F
orty street lights were vandalised recently in Castro Marim’s pretty garden of ‘Colina de Revelim de Santo António’. The damage, which amounts to thousands of euros, is all the more tragic as the local authority had just upgraded the garden and says the lights - “illuminating one of the most beautiful pieces of historic heritage in the town”, a military structure dating back to the time of D. João IV - may have been vandalised by copper thieves.

3 steps to... better Steps! Are you walking correctly? Here's what you should be doing.
W
alking is fundamental. Everyone does it day in and day out, but very few people ever think there's a right or wrong way to walk. We tend to stand up somewhere between 12 and 18 months of age, take our first steps to the cheers of our parents, and are thereafter left to our own devices. The way we learn is through imitation, most often of our parents, grandparents and siblings, who were never taught and quite possibly had injuries and accidents that also impacted their movement patterns. Add to this the fact that we're the first bipedal species to walk upright, and we've been doing it for only a few hundred thousand years — nothing more than a pimple on the face of time. We've had a very short period and little guidance when it comes to getting ambulation right. Here are three easy ways to improve your walk, starting today. Take shorter steps. Contrary to most people’s beliefs, short strides will make you go faster than long strides. You just need to take more of them. Too long strides lead to a host of troubles including hyperextension of the knees, which is also a major issue for both walking and standing. Hyperextension is when a joint has been taken past its normal range of motion. In the case of walking, we hyperextend the knees when our stride is too long and
1
the area behind the knee locks backward with each step we take. If you tend to hyperextend when standing the odds are you will hyperextend when walking. Long strides also tend to take the legs too far out in front of the pelvis so that we land too forcefully on the heels and fail to keep the pelvis on top of the legs which is essential to successful forward motion. If a stride is too long, the calf has to push backward in order to propel the body forwards. This is the exact opposite action of correct walking. You don’t have to take tiny steps; you only need to shorten your stride enough so that the calf doesn’t push backward to propel you forwards. Lean slightly forward. Ask people if they tend to lean backward or slump forwards when standing and almost everyone will say they are round shouldered and slumped over. People think they walk that way as well. Frankly, shoulders might slump forward but they are most often still behind the hips and therefore leaning back. So while walking, the legs move too far in front of the pelvis and the torso leans behind it. This happens due to excessive tucking of the pelvis, and generally being tight in the muscles at the back of the body, specifically the hamstrings at the back of the thigh and the muscles of the lower back. When we lean backward to walk forward, we fail to engage essential core muscles that should be involved

with every step and we don’t take advantage of the propulsive nature of gravity. Walking is meant to be controlled falling, where the body leans forward enough to almost tumble and then catch itself with every step. If you take the lower body back and hinge the upper body slightly forward it is fairly easy to correct the tendency to lean backward. Alternate your arms and legs. The body is a self-healing machine and every step is meant to be a spinal twist that tones the organs and engages the abdominal muscles in addition to the muscles of the arms and legs. Each step should include the arms and legs working in opposition with the right arm moving forward the exact distance of the left leg and then that pattern switching for the left arm and right leg. If the body does this with every step throughout the day every muscle is involved with our gait patterns and the body gets worked out fully and completely. Unfortunately because many people take too long strides, lean backward to move forward and fail to alternate the arms and legs, we miss out on so many of the healing qualities that are inherent in walking correctly. It isn’t hard to change the way you walk. Try to employ these three simple tips today and see how your body feels at the end of the day. 'Every body is better with The Bowen Technique'. Fisioclube center of holistic therapies How the Fisioclube started, by owner Duarte Arrais
W
hen I was young and people asked me what I wanted to be, I replied that I would like to be a potter. Shaping and working clay with hands. However during college I started to like sciences and biology. I liked the area of sport and also the area of health. Someone told me about physiotherapy. I enrolled in the physiotherapy course and it was love at first sight. I got it all together. Shaping and treating people with hands. From there a huge desire of knowledge in these areas was born. Once I finished the course in physiotherapy I felt I was still missing something, to be able to treat people with physical problems more efficiently. It was then that I started a long journey of courses in the area of manual therapies, such as osteopathy, global postural re-education, myofascial release, the tenofibrolise with hooks neuromuscular technique, among many others. I started my professional activity in 1999 as a physiotherapist in social security clinics. Unhappy with the protocols that I had to follow and knowing I could treat people better and faster, I started treating soccer players for free in the Sport Lisboa e Fuzeta. I was applying and improving my techniques. I started having good results and customers were emerging slowly. I started to charge 5 euros for treatments. More and more people came, until I abandoned the social security clinic and began working full time on my space (FisioClube). I called it this name because it’s a space within a football club, where players from the first team and amateur sports get treatment and also private people. I still give assistance to several football clubs in the Algarve as Farense, Almancil, among others, the Algarve Football Team and still
10
gave assistance to referees in FIFA Women Mundialito. Despite good results treating the physical part of the people, I started to realize that some people had physical pain or symptoms in which the cause was not just physical. Some of the causes were from chemical or nutritional disorders and I was limited in those fields. So I decided to start training in the areas of nutrition, food, supplements, homeopathic mesotherapy in iridology (diagnosis of diseases through the iris) etc. The results were increasingly surprising, however there was still a gap of customers I could not treat. People with psychological, emotional, energetic and spiritual problems. So then we started to incorporate professionals of those areas in our team. We have psychology, hypnotherapy, psychotherapy, microfisioterapia to treat patients in which the causes are psychological and emotional. We also have professionals working on the energy and spiritual part, acupuncture, reiki, aura readings, meditation, meditation groups and group therapy. Once I realized that an approach was necessary in various fields so we could treat a wide range of customers, a new name came to my mind, this way was born the FisioClube Centre of Holistic Therapies. A larger, quiet space with more rooms for the various individual and group therapies, with parking, where we also integrated a heated pool (for Watsu, water aerobics, hydrotherapy, infant swimming, etc) and a room for aesthetics. However my ambition does not end here. I want to be always updated and abreast of new technologies and therapies. We will integrate them in our space, and so we’ll expand as necessary. Our motto is: Quality, speed and efficiency to improve the quality of life and functionality of all of our clients.

Osteopathy and Pilates for the golfer Conditions like Low Back, Shoulder, Neck, Elbow and Wrist strain, usually occur because of overuse and because the Joint(s) in question are damaged or injured. If Muscle or other soft tissue pains do not respond to rest or other therapies, then it would be wise to visit your Osteopath who will assess the joints and indeed your whole body. The Golf swing puts enormous force through the whole body, and if some joints are restricted this can cause injury. Osteopathic treatment should not be confused with Chiropractic. Osteopathy is gentle and works with the bodies ability to heal itself. This makes Osteopathy ideal as a maintenance or preventative therapy.

INTERNATIONAL
ANGELMAN DAY FEB 15
A
ngelman Syndrome is a genetic disorder of chromosome 15 characterised by severe intellectual disability, lack of speech, sleep disturbance, and yet, usually a happy demeanor. As part of our DNA, we each have 23 pairs of chromosomes, with one of each pair coming from the mother and the other from the father. Angelman Syndrome (or AS) is a disorder of Chromosome 15. There are several ways in which Chromosome 15 may be affected. Your medical professional will explain which one applies to your child. Why did it happen? The chromosome disorder was there when your child was conceived and there is nothing you or your partner could have done to have caused or prevented it from happening. How common is it? Angelman Syndrome affects about 1 in 20,000 – 25,000 individuals. That means based on our population there are roughly 500 people in Portugal with AS. It affects males & females equally and is present across all races and nationalities. In about 95% of cases the cause is a random occurrence with no family history. For subsequent pregnancies the risk of recurrence is very little different to the general population. In about 5% of cases the disorder is inherited. The genetic situation is different for each family and if planning further children then you should discuss your own individual situation with your local geneticist. What are the features? Below are a collection of symptoms seen in individuals with Angelman Syndrome. AS is a disorder, not a disease and that means affected individuals can live healthy, happy lives. This disorder does, however,
12
We present an overview of Angelman syndrome to help raise awareness for Angelman Day.
have symptoms that should be monitored and managed. Not all of the problems listed below occur in all people. It is not possible to know how many of these features your child might have or to what extent they will be affected by them. There may be many problems or there may only be a few and these problems may be very mild or may be more severe. Consistent symptoms: Developmental delay, severe speech impairment, no or minimal use of words, movement or balance disorder, apparent happy demeanor; easily excitable personality, often with hand flapping movements; short attention span. Frequent symptoms: Seizures, onset usually before 3 years of age, tongue thrusting or protruding; suck or swallowing disorder; drooling, feeding problems during infancy, wide mouth, widespaced teeth, excessive chewing/ mouthing behaviours. Light skin, hair and eye colour (compared to family) Increased sensitivity to heat, Sleep disturbance, Attraction to or fascination with water What happens now? It is likely that your child’s blood has been taken to test for Angelman Syndrome and confirm the diagnosis. You will have to wait several weeks for the results. At some point you may be offered Genetic counseling. To ensure your child has the chance to reach their full potential, you will be referred to the local health provider’s “Early Intervention Team”. This is a group of professionals who can help your child with advice on Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Epilepsy, Communication skills and other aspects important to your child’s development. There may be a waiting list before your child
can be seen. What treatments are available? In addition to developmental interventions there are medical treatments available to help your child with epilepsy, nutrition, sleep and many other aspects. Your medical professional will assess your child’s needs and make appropriate recommendations. There is an ongoing programme of research and clinical trials around the world to identify a treatment for AS to assist with cognitive skills, motor function and epileptic activity. Some promising advances have been made. What help is available? Art
Will Kellermann, the renowned artist from Holland, is going to exhibit her “Portraits of Portugal” in the Museu do Trajo of Sao Bras de Alportel. Opens March 8th 19:00.
B
ehind the signature Will Kellermann lives a very special artist. She likes to see herself described as a romantic adventurer, and there is truth in this. After studying at the academies of Tilburg and the Hague, she left Holland and lived in Switzerland where she studied at the Kunstgewerbeschule Zürich (school for applied arts) and had her first exhibitions. In the eighties she came to live in the 'artist village' of Kortenhoef in the Netherlands. Her leaning to other times and places and a longing for beauty are shown by her appearance, her untiring urge to travel and her love for the authenticity of Portugal where she has had a Studio for several years. Will Kellermann often seeks her subjects in nature, and in all her paintings there is a soul of feminism

and an eye for creation. She tells stories of life and living, of heart and soul in her own colourful way. She likes to paint 'en plein air' and apart from her work in Portugal, she undertakes painting trips throughout Europe, with an international group of fellow painters. The quick impressionistic style with short brush strokes is emerging in her oils in a way that we recognize from the great painters of the past, like Cezanne and Monet. A significant aspect of Will Kellermann's work is her use of colours. She masters many techniques and allows herself to be seduced not only by oil and acrylic paint but also by watercolour and pastel. With these techniques she draws and paints portraits and quick impressions of anything that her artist's eye is enchanted by,
from sun-drenched terraces to flamboyant nudes. It hardly needs stating that there are many collectors of Will Kellermann's work, so varied in topic and technique. Her paintings are exhibited in many countries and she won several awards, a.o. from the Cross Gate Gallery Kentucky and Art et Culture Boissezon France. Recently her work has also been introduced in China and she has an exhibition in the museum of Sao Bras in Portugal. Her work is also in the portfolio of the Art Foundation of 's Graveland the Netherlands. Her book “Romantic Adventurism of Will Kellermann” (Dutch and English), published in 2003, gives a good view on the artist and her work. So does her website www.willkellermann. com.

Benamor L
ast month I was invited to Benamor Golf to meet general manager João Paulo Sousa, who was kind enough to spend some time telling me about the history and future of Benamor Golf. Although nobody knows where the name Quinta do Benamor came from, it was originally an agricultural farm. The oldest record of the name dates back to 1518. In the 1600's it was owned by the Santa Casa da Misericórdia (Holy House of Mercy), a charitable organisation. In 1759, the then owner, Isobel de Aguiar Freira, passed away, leaving it to her two sons; António and José. Quinta do Benamor was now divided! António was to eventually pass away without having children, meaning his part of the Quinta passed on to his brother José, and Quinta do Benamor was whole again! Had António had children, it would probably still be divided today! The farm had many different owners up until the 1960's, when the current owners; the family Martins Dia bought it. It continued to operate as a farm until the idea came about in 1986 to develope the site into a golf course, the first in the East Algarve! The course was designed by Sir Henry Cotton, winner of three Open

Places Championships. Sadly he was to pass away in 1987, and never saw the course he designed. It took from 1987, until 1998 for the project to be approved. Building started in 1999, and the course opened in 2000. The final result is a delightful par 71 golf course of 5.500 metres (6.100 yards), offering a pleasant playing experience to players of all standards. The course is undulating but not hilly. The views of the mountains to the North and the Atlantic Ocean to the South are stunning. There is also a Driving Range, Putting Green and large Putting Course, all excellent practice facilities, along with several spaces for visitors including a bar and restaurant, open to the public. The future of Benamor Golf is very exciting too. Plans have been approved to build a Hotel, an Aparthotel and Villas on the site, cleverly incorporated to hardly affect the course at all; only the 17th and 18th holes will be slightly altered. There will be a total of 400 beds in the complex. Thanks to Jo達o Paulo for taking time out of a busy schedule to talk to me, say hello from us if you decide to pop in.

The Stress Factor
The second in our series following David Holland's experiences learning Portuguese as an Expat.
T
here are no warning lights but there is a sign to guide pedestrians safely across the railway line at Porta Nova. It reads ‘PARE, ESCUTE e OHLE.’ This seemed a good starting point for an interactive study of Portuguese verbs as I was never entirely clear as to the sign’s precise meaning. I learned that the words derived from ‘parar-to stop, escutar - to listen and ohlar- to look: all from the ‘ar’ family or conjugation in which the letter ‘a’ dominates. However where an order is given, the verb moves on to a different track and the letter ‘e’ is used. Verbs from the ‘er’ and ‘ir’ groups operate in the same way; thus from ‘comer’-to eat , and ‘abrir’- to open, the orders to do so are ‘coma!’ and ‘abra!’ The ‘order’ or imperative form is frequently seen on posters and adverts. Verbs highlighted to me the importance of ‘stress’ in the
Portuguese language. For example where a word ends in ’l’ or ‘r’ the emphasis will be on the last syllable. The infinitives of all verbs are governed by this; as parar, escutar and ohlar. The general rule is that the penultimate syllable is stressed and where this is not the case, an accent is placed to indicate where the stress falls.(cases in point are alfandegacustoms and enfase-emphasis.) The position of the stress can alter the sense of a word or the tense of a verb. For example the Portuguese for ‘they have spoken’ from the verb falar is falaram with the emphasis on the penultimate syllable as per the general rule. However when the last syllable is stressed we are back in the future and the meaning is ‘they will speak.’ It was reassuring to realise that both the rules of emphasis and pronunciation in Portuguese are consistent. It must be daunting for a student of English to be confronted with the

aria Libéria Matos has long enchanted her students with the delightful illustrations she uses to complement her classes. Whether teaching Portuguese to children at the Escola Poeta Emiliano de Costa middle school in Estoi, or to struggling expats, who are learning Portuguese as a second language, Libéria (as she likes to be known) has realised that the learning process is made so much more interesting and stimulating through the use of illustrations. Learning new words

letters ‘ough’ and told it has 8 differing sounds (vis. boug, rough, ought, through, cough, dough, borough and last but not least hiccough/hiccup!) Further great news for those of us wishing to increase our Portuguese vocabulary effortlessly. Many English words ending in ‘ity’ transpose neatly into Portuguese; examples include authorityautoridade,city-cidade,universityuniversidade. Hundreds of words should now be on tap for native English speakers! In conclusion a few words which I came across during this second month in Tavira and did not feature in the standard tuition tapes or textbooks; fofoca-gossip, ora bolaswhat the heck, um bocadinho-a little bit, quinquilharia-junk or hardware, and maluco-nuts. and more importantly memorising them, is made all the easier when they appear next to Libéria’s endearing pictures. To bring this to a wider audience, the talented teacher, and no less talented artist, has compiled her work into an engaging illustrated dictionary - DICIONÁRIO ILUSTRADO DE PORTUGUÊS. Featuring more than 2000 words, the book is logically broken down into all manner of themes and categories, all accompanied by the author’s lovingly drawn illustrations. An ideal companion for students of
all ages, this illustrated dictionary makes learning a new language all the less daunting, while introducing Portuguese words and concepts in a fun and captivating manner. Jokes
Mother-in-laws, blondes, lawyers or politicians are often the butt of jokes: Here is one about mother-in-laws: A sogra chega para uma visita surpresa. O genro abre a porta: "Olà! Não nos vemos há tanto tempo! Quanto vais ficar conosco desta vez?" A sogra sorri, querendo ser gentil: "Até vocês se cansarem de mim." "A sério? Não vais nem tomar um cafezinho?" The mother-in-law comes for a surprise visit. The son-in-law opens the door: "Hi! Long time no see! How long are you staying this time?" The mother-in-law smiles, trying to be polite: "Until you get tired of me." "Really? You’re not even staying for a coffee?" Joãozinho, Little John, is the most mentioned character in Portuguese jokes: Tia Lídia pergunta ao Joãozinho: "O que vais fazer quando for grande como a titia?" O Joãozinho responde:"Um regime!" Aunt Lidia asks Joãozinho: "What are you going to do when you are big like Aunty?" "Go on a diet!" he replies

iscounted property prices combined with tax incentives to attract foreign investors such as the golden Visa or the nonhabitual-resident status in addition to record tourism numbers have injected confidence back into the Portuguese property market during the last quarter of 2013. This trend has clearly continued in January 2014 and the year looks promising. Having said this, it is still very much a buyers market with no shortage of available properties. What counts is location, price and the general condition of a house. Putting it into a nutshell, the market conditions are set to improve further with an increase of property price levels some time in the future a logical step to follow. Therefore we would like to present you three properties on desirable locations in the Tavira area. All properties are in excellent condition, situated in well established areas and are priced to sell offering excellent investment opportunities for those who have been holding back their purchase decision. If you are looking to get a first foothold in the Portuguese property market and intend to keep your first investment on a lower scale, the two bed roomed / two bathroom apartment with Land & Houses Algarve reference number LHA-1122 might just be right. The apartment has a private underground parking space and a large private patio of 60 m2 and is located in a quiet well established area called Miramar, North of Tavira and is in easy walking distance to the heart of town. his month’s article has come about because of the recent spate of questions I have been asked about some very sorry looking palm trees in peoples gardens, so I felt it would be good to inform you about the cause of many of these sick palm trees and give you a brief life history of the palm weevil because it has already devastated many palms in other countries and is showing more signs of doing the same to us. The life cycle All stages (egg, larva, pupa and adult) are spent inside the palm itself and the life cycle cannot be completed elsewhere. The females deposit about 300 eggs in separate holes or injuries on the palm. Eggs hatch in 2 to 5 days into legless grubs which bore into the interior of the palms, moving by peristaltic muscular contractions of the body and feed on the soft succulent tissues, discarding all fibrous material. The larval period varies from 1 to 3 months. The grubs pupate in elongate oval, cylindrical
32
cocoons made out of fibrous strands. At the end of the pupation period which lasts 14 to 21 days, the adult weevils emerge. Thus the life cycle is about 4 months. Eggs The eggs are creamy white in colour, long and oval in shape. The average size of an egg is 2.6 mm long and 1.1 mm wide. Larvae The full grown larva is conical in shape and is a legless fleshy grub. It appears yellowish brown, while the newly hatched larva is yellowish white in colour, with a brown head. The length of the full grown larva is 50 mm and the width is 20 mm. The head is brown in colour and bent downwards. Mouth parts are well developed and strongly chitinized, which enable the grub to burrow into the trunk. However, the grub requires a moist environment. Cocoon When about to pupate the larva constructs a cocoon of fibres from palm. The cocoon is oval in shape, with an average length of 60 mm and a width of 30 mm.
Pupa The pupa is at first cream coloured but later turns brown. The head is bent ventrally, the rostrum reaching the tibiae of the first pair of legs. The antennae and eyes are quite prominent. The elytra and wings are brought down ventrally, passing underneath the femora and tibiae of the second pair of legs, overlapping the third pair of legs and meeting in the middle of the abdomen. Adult The adult weevil is a reddish brown cylinder with a long prominent curved snout. It varies considerably in size and is about 35 mm in length and 12 mm in width. The head and rostrum comprise about one third of the total length. The mouth parts are elongated in the form of a slender snout or rostrum, which bears a small pair of biting jaws at the end and a pair of antennae near the base. The rostrum is reddish brown dorsally, and ventrally it is dark brown. In the male the dorsal apical half of the snout is covered with a pad of short brownish hairs; the snout of the female is bare, more

Gardens slender, curved and a little longer. The antennae consist of the scape and funicle. The eyes are black and separated on both sides of the base of the rostrum. The pronotum is reddish brown in colour and has a few black spots. These black spots are variable in shape, size and number. The elytra are dark red, strongly ribbed longitudinally, and do not cover the abdomen completely. The wings are brown in colour and the weevils are capable of strong flight. The male weevil has a tuft of soft reddish brown hairs along the dorsal aspect of the snout; it is absent in the female. Host All palms are probably suitable for the development of the Red Palm Weevil, which has been found on the following palms: Coconut palm Date palm Nigbong palm Oil palm Ornamental palm Palmyra palm Royal palm Sago palm Sedang palm Sugar palm Talipot palm Wild date (toddy) palm

What are the signs of detection? Early detection of infestation of the Red Palm Weevil is difficult as the larvae that damage the palm live inside the stems and base of leaves. Unfortunately, symptoms of infestation are not visible until it is serious. Signs of infestation include: leaves of the adult palm crown wilt and die; holes in the leaf bases; chewed fibre at the base of stem or edge of leaves. Apparently, by the time these external symptoms are observed the damage is usually sufficient to kill the tree and if you place your ear against the palm you can hear the larvae munching away! Control processes Field sanitation and cultural practices are one of the important components to prevent weevil infestation. 1 Clean the crown of palms periodically to prevent decaying of organic debris in leaf axils. 2 When green leaves are cut, cut them 120 cm away from the base. 3 Cutting of steps in palms for easy climbing is to be avoided, as this provides sites for egg laying by weevils. 4 As palms affected by leaf rot and bud rot diseases are more prone
34
to weevil infestation, they are to be treated with suitable fungicides; after that, application of any insecticide to prevent egg laying by weevils is essential. 6 Destroy all dead palms harbouring the pest by cutting and burning. Mechanical Control Dead palms or palms beyond recovery are to be split open, exposing the different stages of the pest present inside and the debris, including the out logs and crowns, are to be burned. Biological Control No effective biological agent, which can be employed for the biological control of the pest, has been found... Chemical Control Preventive: The wounds produced on palms due to cultural practices and anther wounds are favourite sites of oviposition by the female weevils. Treatment of such wounds and soaking of palms with insecticides can be an effective way to prevent RPW entry to palms through wounds. Curative: Once infestation is detected in a palm, curative control has to be applied. If the infestation is in the crown, remove the affected
and damaged portions and apply insecticide suspension. In case of infestation in the trunk, the infested part should be cleaned and plugged with a mixture of mud and insecticide. Trapping the Weevils Trapping the weevils and destroying them is another method by which weevil populations can be brought down. The only effective control is to cut down all infested palms and destroy them at an early stage so the nests of larvae cannot hatch and repopulate an area. The trunk of the palm needs to be split open and all stages destroyed. Burning the head does not kill the stages in the middle of the trunk. Thus, the whole trunk should be chopped and burned. All these methods of control and eradication are best left to experts and for that reason should you have any palms that look like they are showing signs of infection then I would recommend contacting someone like the Algarve Tree Services at www. algarvetreeservices.com who can advise and deal with you problem safely and quickly preventing any further cross contamination.

3rd International Spring Conference Dry Mediterranean Gardening Friday/Saturday/Sunday March 28 / 29 / 30, 2014 at the Pine Cliffs Resort Hotel, Albufeira Keynote Speaker; Roy Lancaster OBE VMH
T
his year, we focus on succulents from Mexico and South Africa and drought tolerant woody plants. The aim of this year’s Conference is to highlight those plants which can be grown with little or no irrigation and provide long term impact with low maintenance. The emphasis is firmly on talks and visits which explore a diverse range of appropriate plants for such gardens. The event is based at the excellent meeting facilities of the 5 star Pine Cliffs Resort. Mr Roy Lancaster, OBE VMH, renowned plantsman, plant hunter and author. An opportunity to hear this world famous, popular and enthusiastic speaker with his personal selection of woody plants from the interesting and often over looked Siskiyou Mountains of California and Oregon and other woody plants suitable for Mediterranean gardens. We are very pleased to welcome Roy back for
another visit to the Algarve. Roy comments: "I have been excited by trees since my childhood, when climbing them offered both a challenge and an escape from boredom. Since then they have fuelled and fulfilled my wildest dreams". Mr Derek Tribble has been growing cacti & succulents as an amateur since teenage years. His passion now is growing and studying South African leaf succulents, after fifteen visits to photograph these plants in nature. Derek will share with us his enthusiasm for the succulent plants of South Africa and for this beautiful country. Mr Paul Spracklin says that it eventually dawned on him that he should seek out plants that satisfied his desire to grow exotic and architectural plants but also make the whole thing rather more sustainable in a dry garden. This led to him making several field trips to Mexico and his main area of interest
now is all the members of the Agave plant family. Other topics include A Beginners Guide to Succulents; Geology of the Algarve; and a focus on Agaves and on Aloes. A new feature will be daily discussion sessions with the key speakers with opportunities to ask questions. Specialist plant nurseries and plant sales area open over the weekend. All are welcome to join us for this very special weekend of horticultural delights with guided wildflower walks, Algarve natural history book sales and optional garden visits. Information on gardens open over the weekend, local nurseries and garden centres, walks and good locations to view wild flowers will be distributed at the conference. Currency Exchange: Simple!
S
ometimes technical terms or jargon can be confusing so over the next couple of months I thought I would explain a few terms used in foreign currency exchange. Interbank rate This is the rate you see on the internet and TV and is the wholesale rate used by banks when they trade between themselves for amounts in excess of £3M. When banks handle transfers for private individuals or small businesses they offer retail rates that are either side of the interbank rate for buying and selling currency. A currency exchange broker will try to get closer to the interbank rate than the banks. Spot Contract This is the most common form of transfer and used when funds are needed as soon as possible. An exchange rate is agreed and the funds are deposited and transferred within 2 days. Here is an example of a spot contract transfer comparing my own online banking in UK to Premier FX, receiving €1000 in my Portuguese account.

New IRC laws 2014: is your company prepared for the new transparency tax regime?
O
ne of the main tax changes arising from the New IRC Tax code, is the alterations to the Transparency tax regime, from the 1st of January 2014. These alterations can cause critical consequences to companies which are included in the activities list described on below (see box on the next page). All these services so far undertaken by the companies were liable to IRC (corporate tax) but under this new tax transparency regime, the profit will be taxed on their respective partner’s tax return IRS. OLHANENSE RETURN HOME
All the latest local sports news from Chris Wright.
T
he New Year was one of cautious optimism for the beleagured Premiera Liga outfit as they returned to the José Arcanjo Stadium, Olhão after five months exile at the Algarve Stadium. Just three days before the crucial home game against V.Setúbal the club was informed by the Portuguese Professional Football League that they could return home. Remedial work at the Stadium passed inspection and there was renewed excitement as new boss Giuseppe Galderisi looked to put a halt to a losing run of six consecutive league games. V.Setúbal started the brighter of the two sides and it was no surprise when they took the lead after just nine minutes through Cardozo. Olhanense, struggling at the foot of ther table, gradually began to believe in themselves and just before the break a miscued shot by Jander rebounded off the bar and Mehmeti was on hand to knock in the rebound. On sixty-seven minutes the home side edged in front with a superb goal. Femi and Luis Felipe combined well and fed the ball to Dionisi who proceeded to beat three defenders before firing past Kieszek. Olhanense maintained pole position to record
42
their first league win since the 26th October and give former Italian international Giuseppe Galderisi the perfect start to his managerial career in Portugal. The following week, in appalling conditions with large areas of standing water, a 1-0 home defeat at the hands of V.Guimarães ensured that Olhananse remained deep in the relegation zone. New players including Italian under 21 international defender Mario Sampirisi, on loan from Genoa, and Nigerian forward Chritian Obodo should give the Algarve side more stability. IT’S RAINING CATS AND DOGS In the game against V.Setúbal a dog decided to get in on the action and despite several attempted tackled it was a couple of minutes before the miscreant was apprehended. The following week against V.Guimarães the crowd was treated to one moment of light entertainment when a cat suddenly sprang from the top of the stand, bounced off a spectator’s head, dashed onto the pitch and showed a clean set-of-paws as it catapulted down the wing! Even Moss the Stork, the Olhanense mascot, was taken by surprise as he flapped his wings in mock surrender.
THE END OF AN ERA The death of Eusébio early in January was quite rightly marked by three days of national mourning for a truly great sportsman. The following weekend his beloved Benfica won a league match against arch-rivals Porto for the first time in more than four years, beating them 2-0, on an emotional afternoon marked by tributes to the 'Black Panther'. Benfica's players all wore the name of Eusébio rather than their own on the back of their shirts and synchronised placards produced a huge image in the stands. He scored an incredible 733 goals in 745 matches and found the back of the net on 41 occasions in 64 international for Portugal. I well remember England’s golden days nearly fifty years ago as they lifted the Jules Rimet Trophy at Wembley but it was the relatively unknown Eusébio who set the tournament alight. Portugal founds themselves 3-0 down midway through the first-half in the quarterfinal against North Korea and heading out of the competition. But Eusébio had other ideas as he ran the Korean defence ragged. Four goals from the maestro and Portugal ran-out 5-3 victors to book themselves a place in the semi-finals against England.
www.eastalgarvemag.com
LEFT: Eusébio (2nd from left) and Benfica took on Olhanense at the Padinha Stadium, where the Ria Shopping Centre in Olhao now stands, some fifty years ago in a Premiera Liga game.
The year before I had gained my FA Preliminary Coaching badge but the skill and power of the Mozambique born player was not in any coaching manual I had ever seen! I watched that game whenever I could and still marvel today at Eusébio natural athleticism. We moved to Portugal nine years ago and I started following SC Olhanense but it was not until 2009 that I first visited the Estádio da Luz when Olhanense, then in the 2nd Division, were drawn away to Benfica in the League Cup. Some 1800 fans made the pilgrimage from Olhão to
Lisbon not knowing that later that day they would be in the same stadium as Maradonna and Eusébio. When the great man was introduced to the crowd a buzz of excitement turned into a tumultuous roar; a memorable moment never to be forgotten. But things could have turned out so different when a tragic accident engulfed the Benfica club in late 1966. ‘The Times’ newspaper London front page of the 7th December had the headline, ‘Electricity fault kills soccer star’. Luciano Jorge Fernandes, a promising athlete signed by Benfica
from Olhanense two years previously, had been electrocuted in the club’s hydro-massage bath. One of the other players in the bath, Malta da Silva, managed to disconnect the electrical supply and the other six players, including Eusébio, were pulled from the water and revived. It is recorded that they only survived because of their superb physical fitness. Thankfully we were able to enjoy many more years of Eusébio as both a player and subsequently tremendous ambassador for Benfica, Portugal and football worldwide.

ust a week after receiving world football’s top honour - the Ballon d’Or - Cristiano Ronaldo was awarded the Order of Prince Henry the Navigator by President Anibal Cavaco Silva. Equivalent to a British Knighthood, the honour is bestowed on those considered to have given outstanding service to Portugal. President Anibal Cavaco Silva said at the ceremony that the forward deserved
recognition because he “brings prestige for Portugal around the world.” An emotional Ronaldo said it was “a moment of great pride” that gave him “the motivation to keep working, and to work even harder in the future.” He added, “There's a while to go before I retire, and I want to win more trophies at club and national level. Winning the World Cup is a dream. It would be the peak of my career.”

Improve your short putting stroke
This months tip from Keith Ashdown, Benamor professional.
Get a golf ball and put it between your left wrist and the side of the putter handle, then practise short putts making sure the ball remains locked in your back and through swing, if your break the wrist the ball will fall out. You should feel a firm, confident stroke. When you are under pressure on the course try to imagine the ball is still there.
I
t's difficult to see how anyone could miss a straight forward 3 foot putt. It only takes a minimal amount of effort, and there's very little technique reguired in moving the putter head back 6", alsoin your favour is the fact that the hole is 3 times larger than the ball. The problem with short putts is that we only look at them objectively on the practice green. We very rarely miss. WHY? Because it doesn't count, it's only PRACTISE. On the golf course you don't get a second chance and, as a result, the more "Do or die" the situation becomes, in a competition when we are under pressure, the hole starts to shrink to the size of a thimble and the ball balloons to the size of a tennis ball. Now that 3 foot putt suddenly becomes anything but simple. One thing you must do with short putts is try to ensure that you don't allow your wrists to break down through impact. Try this simple exercise on the practise putting green. Good Golfing, Keith
