Welcome...
...to your December issue. It seems only a few weeks ago it was impossible to find a table out on the terrace at my favourite restaurant. Today, the tables are all stacked up, the fire inside is burning, and everyone is wishing they were the first in and sat by that fire. Winter is here for sure! Our cover photo is of the Christmas tree in Tavira, and it's hard to believe that once again, Christmas is just around the corner. This month we bring you unique gifts, made by local people, all from recycled materials in our 'Focus on'. We have the latest news about the Pousada in São Brás de Alportel, and also introduce you to Ana and Edgar from Tavira's new International school. Once the festive season is over (and we're all a few pounds heavier), instead of re-joning that gym, why not try a Zumba class? Meet Jillian who takes classes in and around Tavira. Until next month, have a great Christmas, and a happy new year. Editor

amara President Jorge Botelho led local officials in laying flowers at the War Memorial in the Praça da República, Tavira on Remembrance Sunday. A trumpeter from the Tavira School of Music played the last post. The memorial was originally erected to commemorate the dead of the First World War in which some 7,000 Portuguese gave their lives. Portugal entered the First World War in 1916 and sent an Expeditionary Force of over 50,000 men to the Western Front in 1917 where many saw action in Flanders. The memorial also commemorates those who died in the service of their country in the fifty years of war in Africa between 1918 and 1968.

Well known for her tireless work with abandoned and injured street cats and dogs, Sarah now operates out of premises in the Porta Nova area of the town at 13a, Rua Antonio Pinheiro near the Porta Nova Hotel and driving school. Sarah came to the Algarve three years ago, when, as a volunteer with the Worldwide Veterinary Service sterilisation project, she worked at the Goldra Animal Refuge in Loulé. It has taken several months to meet all the statutory requirements of the licensing authorities in Faro and Tavira but NOVAVET is now up and running. The ‘walk-in’ clinic is open from 10.30am to 12noon Monday to Saturday. Sarah is also happy to display photos and details of cats and dogs that are looking for homes. The heal everything technique
G
entle healing The Bowen Technique is a hands-on complementary therapy with apparently miraculous results for a huge range of conditions, from sciatica to stress. Said to 'reset the body so it heals itself' and to 'balance and stimulate energy flows, resulting in a deep sense of overall relaxation,' the uninitiated might dismiss it as just another massage or a version of shiatsu, acupressure or osteopathy. Having experienced all of the above however, I found the Bowen Technique to be subtly but profoundly different - and, dare I suggest, rather more effective. The technique is named after Australian Tom Bowen (1916-1982), a highly intuitive healer without any formal qualifications, who treated some 13,000 patients a year at his peak. Performed while lying clothed, through a series of gently rolling connective tissue moves using thumbs and fingers, the Bowen Technique feels like a friendly hand squidging your fat while you doze. The basic Bowen 'move' distorts a relaxed muscle or tendon and then rolls over it without sliding on the skin. Although every treatment will be different, depending on the patient's problems, most practitioners start on the lower back with four of these 'rolls' up either side. The therapist then, rather surprisingly, leaves the room. According to Julian Baker, one of Europe's foremost practitioners: "A key feature of the Bowen Technique is that of the therapist leaving between certain moves in order to allow the work to take effect. With the move being as subtle as it is, the body and the brain need time to establish a) what has happened and b) what action if any needs to be taken as a result. Far from being a passive action, it's actually allowing the work to start to take effect." The lack of distracting skin stimulation and the limited number of moves is thought to focus the body's attention on exactly what needs healing. It is also what makes
8
The Bowen Technique has helped thousands of patients with a huge variety of problems from carpol tunnel to clapped out knees! Here, one of our health editors and advanced practitioner Gareth Bullock reminds us about his chosen technique. it so different to massage. The therapist returns quietly after a couple of minutes and performs the next series of moves for example, with stiff shoulders, around the upper back, neck and jaw. After a few more rolls, the therapist disappears again. Scientific evidence Not even Tom Bowen could explain exactly how his technique worked. What is know is that it operates through the fascia: the uninterrupted, three-dimensional web of tissue that extends from head to toe, front to back, interior to exterior, which effectively holds our body together. The hormones released during pregnancy can relax the fascia, while the fight-or-flight response is an example of rapid fascial contraction. Acupuncture works by manipulating the fascia, as do forms of osteopathy. Indeed much of the latest research into meridian systems, acu-points amd myofascial trigger points correlate noticeably with the location of the Bowen moves. The difference is that Bowen is both non-invasive and extremely gentle. However, no Western doctor can explain how or why it works. Surprising success Despite the lack of scientific understanding, research proves that it works, and very well. A study of 39 patients for the Migraine Action Association showed a decreasing number of attacks and/or reduced intensity of migraine for 79.5% of patients. Tom Bowen's wife suffered from asthma, which he effectively treated. Research currently being undertaken by Alastair Rattray of the European College of Bowen Studies is showing, "The attacks lessen more and more until they no longer seem to be a problem. There are many successes recorded at all ages." The Bowen Association UK undertook a study into frozen shoulder under the auspices of Dr Bernie Carter of the Metropolitan University of Manchester. They found "a significant improvement in shoulder mobility and associated function for all participants, with
www.eastalgarvemag.com
70% of participants regaining full mobility (equal to the non-affected side) by the end of the treatment." They also reported "a high level of satisfaction with the therapy, a commitment to using Bowen in the future should they require it...and the intention to recommend the therapy and therapist to friends and family." It also appears to be extremely effective as a remedial therapy for those overcoming sports injuries. The Bowen Technique improves rehabilitation time, regardless of how old or recent the injury may be. Chronically ill patients benefit as well as the disabled. Some of the diseases that have demonstrated improvement are multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy and muscular dystrophy. The extremely gentle nature of Bowen makes it suitable for everyone from the newborn to the very elderly Tom Bowen had many apprentices during his working life, accounting for the many official schools of Bowen Technique around the world. The therapy was first brought to the UK in 1993. The huge number of practitioners who have trained there in the last 15 years, many of whom became therapists as a result of benefitting from the technique themselves, attests to the huge and growing popularity of this therapy. Gareth runs clinics in Olhão, São Brás, Almancil and can also do a home visit if required. Treatments costs between €30 & €40 depending on location. Please call me on tm.912540071 for a treatment & like me on facebook, The Bowen Technique Algarve. Happy Christmas everyone and have a very Happy & Healthy New Year!!

What is Tension Headache?
Sinusitis, headache, and tension headache affect the body in different ways. A tension headache is not associated with structural changes in the brain. Most headache is caused by contraction or muscle blood flow problems. About 90% of the world population suffers from Tension Headache.
A
tension headache is pain or discomfort in the head, scalp or neck, usually associated with muscle tension or contraction in these areas in response to stress, depression, head trauma or anxiety. It can occur at any age but is most common in adults and adolescents. A tension headache can occur when the patient also suffers from migraines. Causes Any activity requiring the head to be kept in the same position for a long time without moving can cause a headache. This includes activities such as the computer, delicate crafts requiring precision and attention and use of a microscope. Sleeping in a cold room or sleeping with the neck in an unusual position can also trigger a tension headache. Other triggers of tension headaches include: • Alcohol • Caffeine (too much or withdrawal) • Flu and colds • Dental Problems • Visual Fatigue • Smoke excess • Fatigue • Nasal congestion • Over exertion • Sinusitis • Exam nerves A mild to moderate headache that does not occur with other symptoms and responds to home treatment
10
within a few hours may not need more detailed examinations or tests, especially if it has already subsided. A tension headache reveals no abnormal findings on a neurological examination. However, it is frequently possible to perceive sore spots (tension nodules) in the muscles of the neck and shoulders. If the headache is acute, persistent (does not disappear) or if other symptoms are present, see your doctor to rule out other disorders that can cause headaches. Symptoms of Tension Headache The pain felt by tension headache can be described as: • A light, but steady pressure (not throbbing) • A tight band in head • Spread (not just in one place or on one side) • It's worse in the scalp, temples or neck and possibly the shoulders The pain of tension headaches can occur as an isolated event, be constant or regular. It can last from 30 minutes to seven days and can be triggered or made worse by stress, fatigue, noise or excessive brightness. May cause insomnia but usually does not cause nausea or vomiting. In general, people with tension-type headache trying to ease the pain by massaging the scalp, temples or the base of the neck
Tension Headache Treatment In FisioClube, Holystic Therapies Center, each case is unique, so Dr. Duarte Arrais will do an individual diagnostic and adopt his best techniques. As an osteopath, his approach focuses on osteopathic manipulation treatment, acting in the region of the neural system of lower cervical, high thoracic, ribs and related myofascial tissues. Nutritional counseling, prescription of therapeutic exercises, postural assessment and education and mainly involves the patient in a process of self-healing, helping him to understand the causes and physiology of headaches, identify and eliminate potential sources that trigger symptoms, teeth, jaw, sinuses, cervical and cranial bones, joints and associated myofascial tissus. However the rest of the body is examined in search of anatomical relationships that may be the cause. Vertebral disorders, myofascial, cranial-sacral, local and regional, are commonly found. In FisioClube Fuzeta Dr. Duarte Arrais always complements your treatment using other techniques such as: Global Postural Re-education, Nutrional Therapy, Iris Diagnosis, Microkenesisitherapy, Neuromuscular Balance, Auricular Therapy, Neural Therapy and Cupping Therapy to provide a truly holistic treatment.

Introducing The Colegio Santiago International, the first International school in the center of Tavira.
C
First Class
hoosing the best education is a major decision for every parent, and we were delighted to be invited by Ana Alves and Edgar Matias to see The Colegio Santiago International, based in the charming square of Praça Zacarias Guerreiro, right in the heart of Tavira which opened in October this year. Ana, the Head Teacher, originally from Lisbon and Edgar the Business Manager from Santa Catarina da Fonte do Bispo, near Tavira very kindly showed us around the beautiful building, a former hospital dating back to the 15th century. Ana explained, “after completing a mathematics degree she worked in schools in both London and Portugal while finishing her Master’s Degree in Leadership and Management in Education”. Edgar studied business management in England and spent 12 years in London on various projects as well as working
14
extensively here in Portugal. The amazing building was once home to the Portuguese missionaries who were set to begin their journey to discover Africa and became the Santo Espirito Hospital, funded by the wealthy people of the area at the time, to take care of the poor. In 1921 the hospital got together with Santa Casa de Misericordia, a government charity and in 1974 all hospitals were nationalised. The hospital had a maternity wing and locals now pop in to admire the original features, which have been kept in place such as the floors and balustrade. The building had been closed for over 8 years and was in very bad repair, when in March 2012 the project began to restore it to its former glory, and create the inviting space and feel for everyone. The Colegio Santiago International believes that all students are unique individuals with different abilities and needs. They believe in a
'personalised education, offering a differentiated curriculum, effective and rigorous, to develop, enhance and maximize everyone’s potential'. They invest in creating a school culture in a stimulating environment both academically and socially, bringing music, drama, arts and sports together to create a place of excellence for their students to contribute their best into society and the local community. Their aim is to 'integrate into the community, working directly with students, parents, teachers and employees so that everyone feels included in this process of constant development'. Very importantly education in CSI is based on the English system; GCSE, and A levels, and is open to all nationalities. Lessons are taught in English and in Portuguese, this way pupils have a bilingual education. CSI believes that children deserve the best in their education and every

child is different, so they adapt the English curriculum to every child’s needs, using individual and creative lessons, both in Portuguese and English, learning Portuguese history and culture, which is very important, living here in the East Algarve. CSi's education inspires the children to become independent, resilient, critical thinkers, self-confident and leaders, preparing them for a more confident future, to be healthy, stay safe and to enjoy learning with an individulised programme, for every pupil. The British-model of education is known as one of the best in the world, the education in the Colégio Santiago Internacional is identical and runs parallel to the Portuguese Education system, recognised by all countries within the E.U. and the educational systems of other member states, enabling access to all European Universities. With an emphasis on its pupils and importantly for the community,

The school is open during school holidays and offers after school activities, and also the invaluable ‘holiday weeks’ available from the 17th December for a week long diary of great activities for all the children from 3 to 14 years of age, whether a pupil or not. For more information you can visit their web site, www.csi-tavira.com or to get the real feel of the atmosphere you can arrange to visit the school for a personal appointment to find out more information on their courses. The Colégio Santiago Internacional has as its main mission; 'an
education of excellence to children of all nationalities between 3 and 18 years of age, covering pre-school, primary and secondary education. following a modified National Curriculum of England with the emphasis in bilingual learning, where children are taught in English and Portuguese, with mathematics and science specialisation'. Responding to the current needs of an open Europe and an increasingly globalising world, this college gives its students the opportunity to have an education of excellence, to better cope with the increasingly tight labour market, offering an excellent quality and value to parents. Many thanks to Ana and Edgar and the children in the school, it was a pleasure to meet them, we hope that perhaps you will visit them soon, to investigate the new courses from dance to Art, or to perhaps take up the Portuguese lessons which they run twice a week.

T
he Pousada in São Brás de Alportel stands impressively on the hilltop, visible as you enter the town and is currently being attentively restored by Danish ‘social entrepreneur’ Stig Jorgensen. Real estate agency Russell and Decoz, Moncarapacho, recently took part in the completion of the sale of the former Pousada, and introduced us to Stig. He explained that his goal was to reinvent the impressive Pousada, and make it a “new tourist destination”. So far, Stig together with his wife Adie and daughters Joan and Signe have already completed several “social entrepreneur” projects in Denmark as well smaller similar projects here

in the East Algarve. These projects are now seeing over 100 North European families each enjoying 4 to 10 weeks holidaying in the East Algarve area year after year. This idea comes from an old Danish countryside tradition originally developed in Rochdale in England in 1844 and based on the Rochdale Principles. In Denmark from 1866 small farmers joined together to open shops. Each farmer would own a share in the unit, and they would hire staff, share the expenses and income among them to keep the prices in the shop low to benefit the whole group. The ‘new tourist-concept’ is based on the same principle. It allows families to become part of a consortium of shareholders of their very own holiday home away from home, with other like minded people, for life. Having found the ideal location and property, he will now find more than a hundred shareholders who will each make a one off payment, and buy into the scheme for life. They
receive 12 ‘vouchers’ per year, 2 vouchers equal to one weeks use of a one bedroomed apartment, one voucher equal to one weeks use of a studio apartment. There is a nominal monthly payment made for maintenance, and an amount for electricity and water etc. for the time spent at the resort. Should a shareholder not be able to use the whole 12 vouchers he can invite family or friends to do so, or rent out to others. Stig is keen to point out the difference between ‘timeshare’ and his concept. With timeshare you never actually own the property, and there is a separate company in control of ‘your’ holiday home and the expences are beyond your control. Once Stig has completed his role of restoration and found shareholders, they assume total control and ownership of the project. Stig's company takes the economic risk with the restoration and of course will gain money in putting up the whole scheme. The Pousada has been empty for

A BRIEF HISTORY of the São Brás Pousada
Introducing 'The Heart of the Algarve', a new tourist concept brought to the East Algarve by Stig Jorgensen and family.
Built in the forty's and launched by the National Secretary of Propaganda, Dr. António Ferro. Designed by the Architect Miguel Jacobetty, Pousada S. Brás is one of the first seven Pousadas to appear in Portugal. The Pousada started with 5 rooms, then had 14 rooms and, in 1997, enlarged to 33.
São Brás over 3 years and was previously owned by the government. Stig had driven past the building several times the last 2 years, and had thought that it would be a fantastic place for his idea, having amazing views, wonderful space and very peaceful, whilst having easy access to the town. He began the restoration in early October this year, using his experienced team and local East Algarve companies. The project is well on its way to opening in May 2013. "Andelsselskabet Coração do Alagarve" will be the new name of the old building which means “Heart of the Algarve”. Stig and his team have begun the restoration keeping original features as well as modernising. Upon completion it will boast its own teaching courses for all ages, art workshop, tennis camp, golfbags and bicycles on site as well as the planned restaurant, which he hope will adopt the idea of the “Cittaslow-movement”, a
www.eastalgarvemag.com
movement who’s goals include improving the quality of life in towns by slowing down its overall pace, by a city's promotion and preservation of local products, by its use of spaces and the flow of life and traffic through them. Cittaslow is part of a cultural trend developed from the Slowfoodmovement. São Brás de Alportel is one of only 4 Portuguese towns who in this early stage have already joined the Cittaslow-movement. Many thanks to Stig, it was a pleasure to meet him, his affection for the East Algarve and his commitment to ensuring that the restoration is completed caringly is very evident. We look forward to the Summer, and the arrival of many more visitors who can say this is also their home. he weak economic outlook, austerity and uncertainty surrounding the future of the eurozone have been the main culprit for a decline in demand for homes in Portugal in 2012. When the Trioka praises ailing Portugal, it refers to the progress of the external and budgetary adjustment process and reduced risk of financial instability. Balancing the books seems more important than the way in which it is achieved. Increasing taxes is not the way forward. Spending cuts, structural changes and a smaller government (fewer civil servants) is. Better late than never, Mario Draghi of the ECB confirmed higher taxes are harming the economy. Of course, when compared to Greece, Portugal is doing reasonably well. Progress has been made with the deleveraging of the banking system, the balance of payments has improved (mainly due to a decrease in imports, exports have increase slightly). In the mean time, the construction sector in the Algarve is almost extinct. Companies still operating have reduced their workforce. The ever decreasing number of new building permits together with a shortfall of income from IMT (property transfer tax) created a hole in the budget of many councils. Over the period January to September property transactions have declined by over 28% versus the same period in 2011. Concerns

Among the world developed economies, Portugal was second after Argentina on the list of countries with the largest overall tax increases in the past three years, according to the IMF. The tax increases for 2013 were not included in this report. In addition to higher income tax and a new surcharge tax of 3.5% on income, capital gains tax will go to 28% (was 25%), council tax (IMI) will be going up with the new rate to be set by each council, properties with a rateable value (valor patrimonial) of 1 million or higher will be charged an additional Euro 75.000 which will particularly hurt areas with high end luxury properties such as Quinta de Lago and Vale do Lobo. Instead of increasing VAT from 19 to 23%, a more pragmatic approach would have been to lower the rate temporarily to 7 - 8 % for new construction and renovation work. Instead of being a burden, it would have kept people employed and revenue from taxes would have been higher. In general one could say the increase of VAT to 23% did not make sense at all. It has resulted in less revenue for the government. There is

It was already a stretch when the rate was increased to 21% at a time when neighbouring Spain was at 17%. The problem was then and still is tax collection. Although not as pervasive as in Greece, many avoid paying what is owed in Portugal. Hence, contrary to the Troika’s (IMF, EU and ECB) demands to cut wages and jobs in Portugal’s bloated civil service, they are encouraging the government’s decision to hire 1000 additional tax inspectors. Banks are still not eager to issue new mortgages. Most purchases year to date have been made without financing. Our agency covers the whole Algarve, in our experience over 95% of transactions were concluded without finance. However, banks are offering 100% finance and apply smaller spreads for properties they need to dispose of and are allowed to continue this practice after questions being raised in parliament. This creates an uneven playing field. Banks usually do not offer more than 70% LTV with a spread over Euribor almost double at 3.5 - 3.75%. According to APEMIP, the rate of foreclosures has stabilized due to banks taking a more lenient approach.
In my opinion this is only part of the story, as the decline in foreclosures is a numbers game where the big numbers came from failing developers with tens to hundreds of properties being foreclosed on at a time. The current foreclosures are from private individuals losing their main residence. However, there are signs the European debt crisis is fading. The risk is to underestimate global economic growth 12 months out. After the restructuring and lower debt levels, Europe’s economies will be in a much better position to benefit from an upturn. Furthermore there is a good chance that over the next 12 months both the Greek debt crisis and the bad debt situation at banks in Spain are resolved. In our view, we foresee another difficult year ahead for real estate but we do see light at the end of the tunnel. Beautiful Bonsai A little piece of the orient in your Home or Garden! This article gives you a quick guide to growing and caring for your Bonsai.
T
he word “Bon-sai” (often misspelled as bonzai or banzai) is a Japanese term which, literally translated, means “planted in a container”. This art form is derived from an ancient Chinese horticultural practice, part of which was then redeveloped under the influence of Japanese Zen Buddhism. It has been around for well over a thousand years. The ultimate goal of growing a Bonsai is to create a miniaturized but realistic representation of nature in the form of a tree. Bonsai are not genetically dwarfed plants, in fact, any tree species can be used to grow one. History of Bonsai Although the word ‘Bon-sai’ is Japanese, the art it describes
32
originated in the Chinese empire. By the year 700 AD the Chinese had started the art of ‘pun-sai’ using special techniques to grow dwarf trees in containers. Originally only the elite of the society practiced puntsai with native-collected specimens and the trees where spread throughout China as luxurious gifts. During the Kamakura period, the period in which Japan adopted most of China’s cultural trademarks, the art of growing trees in containers was introduced into Japan. The Japanese developed Bonsai along certain lines due to the influence of Zen Buddhism and the fact that Japan is only 4% the size of mainland China. The range of landscape forms was thus much more limited. Many well-known techniques, styles and
tools were developed in Japan from Chinese originals. Although known to a limited extent outside Asia for three centuries, only recently has Bonsai truly been spread outside its homelands. How to grow a Bonsai tree Most people started growing bonsai after having bought a tree in an (online) shop. Though this is without doubt a nice way to get started, it might be more interesting and less expensive to grow a tree yourself. Though 'bon-sai' is an Asian art, studied and refined for many centuries, don't think you won't be able to grow one yourself. In fact, everyone is perfectly capable of growing a tree as long as you pick the right tree species for your environment and properly care for it.
www.eastalgarvemag.com
Gardening In this article I'll explain how to get started with growing Bonsais and introduce you into the three main parts of growing, training and bonsai care. Growing and cultivating Bonsai trees. Bonsai trees are grown with the purpose to resemble real life trees; looking old but remaining miniaturesized. There are different methods to propagate trees suitable for Bonsai purposes, ranging from having full control on their shape and size (starting with seedlings or cuttings) to buying a ready-made tree in a shop. Bonsai cultivation and propagation basics. A Bonsai tree is not a specific kind of tree, instead, it is a combination of techniques to create and maintain a miniature tree that reflects nature. This means that any kind of tree can be selected to grow as a Bonsai tree; some species however are particularly suitable (as they naturally have small leaves for
example). Having said this, there are several methods of cultivating trees intended to be trained into a Bonsai, which will be discussed accordingly. Buying a Bonsai tree. The easiest way to acquire a Bonsai tree is simply to buy one. Most garden centers and a growing number of online Bonsai shops offer trees at affordable prices. Be careful to select a tree that fits your wishes well, i.e. in selecting an indoor or outdoor variety. Bonsai cultivation using seeds or cuttings. Although cultivating Bonsai trees from seed or from cuttings will take a considerable amount of patience, it can be very rewarding. Seeds are widely available in forests and parks during autumn, but can also be bought online. Cuttings can be collected year-round, preferably in summer. Collecting trees from nature. Another way of acquiring trees suitable for Bonsai purposes is
collecting trees growing in forests or parks. Please note that permission in most cases is required. Collecting trees has several advantages over the cultivation techniques described above, most noteworthy the reduced time it takes before you can get started to shape the tree. Similar to collecting trees is buying nursery stock in a garden center. Advanced Bonsai propagation techniques. Two advanced techniques remain; layering and grafting. The principal of layering is to force a tree or branch to form new roots at a certain point by interrupting the stream of nutrients from the existing root system. The grafting technique can be described as “melding” a stump (the root system and a small portion of the trunk) and a graft (the upper portion of the trunk, including branches) together. Training and shaping Bonsai trees A common misconception is that the plants used for Bonsai are genetically

'dwarfed' plants. Bonsai trees are normal plants, propagated like any other, but trained using sophisticated techniques to keep them small. The training includes basics like regular pruning and wiring, but also more advanced styling techniques such as creating deadwood. Bonsai styling and training basics. A wide range of techniques have been developed that help to create and maintain a Bonsai tree’s miniature size and shape. Most important are pruning and wiring, which will be discussed below. Bonsai styling by pruning. An occasional thorough styling as well as regular maintenance pruning is essential to create and maintain a miniature tree. When shaping a tree, deciding on which branches fit the design and which ones need to be removed can be very tricky. Take the tree’s basic shape as given (do not try to make overly radical changes) and decide what should be the tree’s front. From this position on start thinking about which branches need to be pruned in order to improve the tree’s overall design. After having styled the tree, regular pruning is crucial in forcing the tree to grow a dense foliage and branch structure, while remaining its shape. Bonsai training by wiring. Like pruning, wiring is an essential technique to style Bonsai trees. By wrapping copper-wire around the tree’s branches you are able to set the shape and angle of the branches. When wiring a tree, start with its main branches. Thick branches need thick
34
wiring; as a rule of thumb use wire of about 1/3 to 1/4 the thickness of the branch. Try to wire two branches of equal thickness with one piece of wire. It is important to maintain an edge of about 45° when wrapping wire around the branches, providing some room for growth. Other Bonsai styling techniques. Many other Bonsai styling methods have been developed, including defoliation, creating deadwood and planting rock formations. Bonsai care and tree maintenance. Caring for a Bonsai tree is not as hard as is commonly thought. However, as Bonsai trees are planted in small pots a few basic guidelines have to be followed when watering, fertilizing and repotting your trees. Bonsai tree care basics Though Bonsai trees are a little more delicate compared to the average indoor plant, a few basic rules should enable anyone to take care of its tree properly. Most importantly are watering, fertilization and choosing the right position to place it. Watering Bonsai. How often Bonsai need to be watered depends on a wide range of factors, including species of tree, size and climate. Do not just water your tree every day, instead, monitor it carefully and water it once the soil gets slightly (but never completely) dry; it should be damp. When watering, do it thoroughly though. Fertilization. As Bonsai trees are generally placed in small pots regular fertilization
is required in order to replenish nutrients that are essential to the tree. Using a special ‘Bonsai fertilizer’ can be convenient, but any fertilizer will do (be careful not to use too much though). Follow the instructions as stated on the fertilizer’s packaging regarding quantity and timing. Position, temperature and sunlight. Deciding on the right place to put your tree is crucial for its well-being. First make sure that indoor trees are placed in a warm environment; outdoor trees (although depending on species of trees) generally require much lower temperatures and should be placed outside. Next, most species of trees prefer a bright spot, normally with at least some direct sunlight.

Portugal Tax Update
By Bill Blevins, Financial Correspondent, Blevins Franks
T
he State Budget for 2013 includes a number of tax rises. At the time of writing it is still going through parliament, but in the meantime the government has passed a retroactive law that affects income and gains received in 2012. As announced at the end of October 2012, the fixed rate of tax applied to investment income (interest, dividends, capital gains etc) this year is now 26.5% (and not 25% as planned). If the investment assets are held in a jurisdiction categorised as a ‘tax haven’ (including the Isle of Man, Channel Islands and Gibraltar), the income arising from them is now taxed at a flat rate of 35%. A new tax has also been imposed on high end properties. Residential properties valued at €1 million or more will be hit by a Stamp Duty tax, charged at rates of 0.5% or 0.8% for 2012. From 2013, the rate will increase to 1%. This is in addition to the Imposto Municipal sobre Imóveis (IMI). If a property is owned by a company resident in a tax haven, the Stamp Duty rate is 7.5%. 2013 tax rises At the time of writing the 2013 Budget has not yet been approved. There may therefore be changes to the proposed tax rises outlined below. The flat rate of tax on investment income will increase again, this time to 28%. Personal income tax will be hit, in a number of ways. All tax rates are going up, and the threshold for the top rate of tax lowered. The top rate of tax in 2013 will be 48% (before surtaxes) for income over €80,000. At the same time the number of tax bands will be cut from eight to five, pushing incomes into higher tax brackets. The solidarity tax of 2.5% remains in place, to now be applied to income over €80,000. On top of this, a new 4% surtax will apply to income over €6,790. So all in all, the top rate of income tax is actually 54.5%. For non-residents renting out Portugal property, the tax rate on the income will jump from 16.5% to 28%. Tax planning has become very important if you wish to shelter your assets from unnecessary taxation and protect your after tax income. Foreign Exchange Reserves Bonds or ´Sound Money`
T
he Basel Committee on Banking Supervision is an exclusive and somewhat mysterious entity that issues banking guidelines for the world’s largest financial institutions. The Committee’s latest ‘framework’, is referred to as “Basel III”. The regulators have stubbornly held to the view that AAA-government securities constitute the bulk of those high quality assets, even as the rest of the financial world increasingly realizes they are anything but that. As banks move forward in their Basel III compliance efforts, they will be forced to buy everincreasing amounts of AAA-rated government bonds to meet liquidity and capital ratios. Add to this the additional demand for bonds from governments themselves through various Quantitative Easing programs, and we may soon have a situation where government bond yields are so low that they simply make no sense to hold at all. This is where gold comes into play. If the Basel Committee decides to grant gold a favourable liquidity profile under its proposed Basel III framework, it will open the door for gold to compete with cash and government bonds on bank balance sheets – and provide banks with an asset that actually has the chance to appreciate. The world’s non-Western central banks have already embraced this concept with their foreign exchange reserves, which are vulnerable to erosion from ‘Central Planning’ printing programs. After all – if the banks are ultimately interested in restoring stability and confidence, they could do worse than holding an asset that has gone up by an average of 17% per year for the last 12 years and represented ‘sound money’ throughout history. mixed month for the Algarve’s only Premier Liga team as they struggled against injuries to key players. A fortunate point was gained at home to Moreirense with skipper Rui Duarte converting two penalties. A goalless draw at high flying P.Ferreira resulted in Guinea-Bissau international Ivanildo sustaining a fractured left arm which is expected to keep him out of action for at least a month, whilst influential defenders Mauricio and Luis Felipe are still on the treatment table. In mid month a first-half goal was enough for Olhanense to take all three points against fellow strugglers Beira-Mar. The home side who dominated the first forty-five minutes and on the halfhour mark Babanco whipped over a pinpoint corner and the lively Iban Abdi rose majestically to power the ball past keeper Rui Rego. Referee Jorge Sousa was card happy, booking two players in the first few minutes and at regular intervals thereafter, in a game that neither trainer was called into action. It was therefore no surprise when Collet (Beira-Mar) and André Micael (Olhanense) were sent-off in the second-half. André Micael’s dismissal resulted in a free-kick just outside the penalty area and Joaozinho’s rasping

shot was destined for the back of the net until Bracali pulled off a stunning save to tip the ball over the bar. CUP EXIT Manager Sérgio Conceição was hoping for an extended run in the Portugal Cup, equivalent to the English FA Cup, but a combination of poor refereeing and a moment of madness by Targino put paid to his aspirations on the return visit to P.Ferreira. Abdi scored his fifth goal of the season which looked to be enough for the Algarveans. But it all changed in the 77th minute when Targino was sent off for kicking the ball away after the whistle had blown to pick-up his second yellow card and expulsion from the game. Three minutes later and P.Ferreira were 2-1 up through goals from the dangerous Cicero. Referee Mota booked nine Olhanense players and drew the wrath of Sérgio Conceição who was openly critical of the officials and Targino. WASHED OUT IN BENFICA A large contingent of fans travelled to Lisbon for the encounter with the mighty Benfica who days earlier
had beaten Glasgow Celtic 2-1 in the UEFA Champions League. This would be the Eagles 50th unbeaten league game at the Estádio da Luz going back to 2009. It was not a happy occasion for the visiting supporters. As well as losing the game 2-0 to a Cardozo penalty and a second-half header from Luisão the Olhanense fans deserved more respect from one of Europe’s top clubs. Under Article 35 of the UEFA Club Licensing and Financial Fair Play Regulations all top flight clubs are required to promote a positive discourse with fans. On a very wet evening, those arriving for the game were treated with minimal regard. Not only did fans have to forfeit their umbrellas - including the small folding type, with no opportunity to retrieve them after the game the roof of the stadium leaked like a sieve whilst some unused areas were in the dry. To add insult to injury, a wiremesh security screen had been installed in front of the Olhanense fans which made it impossible to see the game clearly. Benfica would have known there was going to be a low

Sport defence of the League Cup at the José Arcanjo Stadium, Olhão. The Olhão team were exempt from the first two rounds of the competition by finishing eighth in last season’s Premier Liga. The third phase comprises of four minileagues of four teams with Olhanense having the advantage of two home games and one away. Besides the preChristmas clash with the Lisbon giants, the other home game will be against Moreirense on Wednesday 9th January whilst the team will travel to Coimbra to do battle with Académica on either the 30th December or 2nd January. Benfica have won the prestigious trophy for the past four seasons and in last season’s final beat Gil Vicente 2-1. attendance level and could and should have made much better provision for visiting supporters. On entering the stadium the men received a cursory frisking whilst women had to undergo a thorough search of every last item in their pockets and handbags. Yet during the game flares were set off by the home fans. Michel Platini, the President of UEFA, has clearly stated that, “The supporters are the lifeblood of professional football - they are the identity of the clubs. Owners, coaches and players change but supporters always remain. At UEFA we try to incorporate the views of the fans into what we do.” The words have a hollow ring so let us hope that Michel Platini and his cohorts study their own regulations and respond to the letter that is winging their way…….but I won’t hold my breath! EXCITING MONTH AHEAD Olhanense next home game is against Gil Vicente on the weekend of the 15th/16th December whilst on the 19th December Benfica will start their

former Algarve schoolboy Eric Dier made a spectacular debut in the shock 1-0 win over third placed SC Braga recently. He set up the winning goal after just four minutes when his low cross was neatly tucked into the net by Ricky van Wolfswinkel. Eric moved to the Algarve when he was seven years-old and the family lived at Meia Praia near Lagos for several years when his mother landed a top job working for the 2004 European Football Championships. Spotted by Sporting Lisbon, he moved to their world famous academy where the likes of Luis Figo, Cristiano Ronaldo and Nani learnt their trade. Everton took him on a six-month loan last year but he did not feature for the first-team and returned to Lisbon in the summer. Manchester City are now rumoured to be interested in the tall central midfielder. He has been approached by the Portuguese Football Federation about representing them but Dier, born in Cheltenham, has said he wants to play for England.

The Best things in life
I
An end of year message from resident professional at Benamor Golf, Keith Ashdown.
simply have to put these lines in this last issue of 2012. They are not exactly words of golfing advice, which I set out to give, but all the same I feel I need not apologise for them, for they just about sum up life to me, as I am sure they will to many others who read them. After all we are all three people in one: "the person we think we are, the person others think we are, and the person we really are! Youth is not a time of life - it is a state of mind. It is not a matter od ripe cheeks, red lips and supple knees, it is a temper of the will. A quality of the imagination, a vigour of the emotions, a predominance of courage over timidity, of the appetite for adventure over love of ease. This often exists in a man of fifty more than in a boy of twenty. Nobody grows old by merely
living a number of years, peope grow old only by deserting their ideals. Years wrinkle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul. Worry, doubt, self-distrust, fear and despair - these are the long, long years that bow the head and turn the growing spirit back to dust. Whether 70 or 16, there is in every being's heart the love of wonder, the sweet amazement at the stars and the star-like things and thoughts, the undaunted challenge of events, the unfailing appetite for what next, and the joy and the game of life. You are as young as your faith, as

old as your doubt, as young as your self-confidence, as old as your fear, as young as your hope, as old as your despair. So long as your heart receives messages of beauty, cheer, courage, grandeuer and power from the earth, from man and from the INFINITE, so long as you are young. When the wires are all down and all the central place of your heart is covered with the snows of pessimism, then you are grown old indeed and may god have mercy on your soul". Merry Christmas and a happy new year to all readers, Good golfing, Keith
