Tour operators visit East Algarve
t was a special "away day" designed to bring yet more holidaymakers to the rural Sotavento (eastern) Algarve region. Five international tourism operators visited a number of municipalities to enjoy, first-hand, the best the area has to offer. They were introduced to the natural beauty of the Guadiana River, the mountain landscape and the wonders of local gastronomy. According to a press release by Odiana, the association for the development of the Lower Guadiana area, the trip was a joint collaboration involving the

Algarve Tourism Association (ATA), Megasport, the municipal authority of Alcoutim and Odiana itself. Representing the French, Danish, Swedish and German markets, the visitors began their trip in Alcoutim and made their way down numerous walking trails, visiting local landmarks and ending with a typical rural meal. In the afternoon, they were taken on a bike ride around the picturesque town
of Cacela Velha, arriving at Tavira's Praia do Barril just before sundown. Odiana reports that at the end of the trip the operators all promised to return, bringing holidaymakers with them. “This was yet another strong initiative to promote the municipality’s local resources on an international level,” the association added.
Christmas came early for Bombeiros!
hen the volunteer firemen (Bombeiros) of São Brás de Alportel held their annual Christmas party on December 14, there was much to celebrate. Members of the Bombeiros and the Rotary Club Estoi Palace International (RCEPI) had recently driven to Porto to receive delivery of a much-needed new ambulance donated by the club. The Christmas party was also an ideal opportunity for RCEPI president Shirley Dunne to present two further pieces of equipment purchased by the club - an automated external defibrillator training unit and a portable
vital signs monitor, which can be taken from the ambulance into a patient’s home to assess their medical status before moving them. Following the presentation, David Gonçalves, president of the local Junta de Freguesia, gave a speech thanking the Bombeiros for their work in the community and then presented Flávio Martins, president of the Bombeiros board, with a cheque for €5,000 towards the purchase of a large generator which is required to run equipment in conditions where electricity is unavailable. São Brás mayor Vitor Guerreiro then trebled
the amount by donating a cheque for €10,000. Another surprise came from resident Margaret Matterson who donated a further €2,100. She explained that her husband Kenneth Matterson had passed away in May and that his family and friends wished to make a donation to the Bombeiros in his memory. Salvador Gonçalves, second commander of the Bombeiros, gave a warm speech thanking everyone for their donations and support of the Bombeiros.

I
am very lucky in my job to get to meet such interesting people here in the Algarve. Some of my clients return with recurring injuries or new problems and it is always a challenge to find the best solution for them. I always like to hear how people get on following treatments and here is an article written by one of my clients who has found every type of treatment possible, all within the Moncarapacho area. Who would have thought such a tiny village had such a huge range of Complimentary / Alternative Therapies available on its doorstep? IN AT THE DEEP END! My Personal Journey from Despair into an almost unending range of wonderful complimentary therapies available in the Moncarapacho Area. My Story begins about this time last year. As is usual with us, once the hot weather begins we go swimming at Faro Beach. It is never crowded as there is masses of space even with the tide in. We usually swim at least 2 days a week, take our sandwiches, chairs and water and settle down but have a swim first, then collect beer in our Picnic mugs and begin our lunch. But last August I decided to anoint myself with Bronzing Oil so as to get tanned quickly. What I had not taken into account was that I had been stung by 4 Wasps while getting into the Car. I did take an anti histamine, but disregarded my Husbands advice to take some more thru the rest of the day. He is sometimes right, as I learnt to my cost. PROBLEMS The next day my Skin allergy began, caused by Sunburn, resulting in a severe rash over most of my body. Wherever I had applied the oil my skin erupted causing terrible irritation. What could I do about it and who could I turn to for help?

Happy New Year to all the readers of the East Algarve Magazine. I hope 2014 will be very happy and Healthy for you all.
Obviously my first port of call was my Doctor, who recommend that I see a Dermatologist. I saw two different ones but to no avail. It was then I decided to turn to Complimentary treatments. I was assured by a Reflexologist that there was no underlying cause for my condition, but it could be treated by Homeopathy, avoiding all dairy products, pork & coffee, while taking recommended tablets. I persevered with this treatment with mixed results, but since then I have tried:- ELECTRO INTERSTITIAL SCAN SYSTEM This is a method of looking at possible internal causes of physical problems. Involving hands and feet being applied to cold metal plates and an attachment to ones Head. The resulting information is fed into a Computer for the Doctor to analyse. He would then advise you on a course of treatment. BIOMAGNETISMO. With this Treatment Magnets are applied to strategic parts of the body, while the Operator manipulates the legs and ankles. This therapy involves studying the plusses and minuses of the body, and levelling them. BOWEN TECHNIQUE. I came across Bowen Technique by chance. I was walking back to the House with my shopping when suddenly my left leg disappeared down a hole, I had never seen this hole before, but the metal cover was rotten, had given way and my leg was down amongst the slimy, black, smelly grey water. I managed to get my leg out and had about three showers, but in the process had hurt my Back. So I decided to see if the Bowen Technique would help and luckily it did after two sessions. One year on I have learnt to accept that alternative treatments take time, but what is the hurry? In the process I
have met and been helped by some dedicated & professional people who are still involved in my care. And is still ongoing.... Thank you for this article and we wish you well. READERS, if you have any articles you think we would find of interest, contact me and I will research and print them and share everyone’s experiences. Happy New Year! Exercise & osteoarthiritis of the knee Is physical Exercise the villain or hero?
O
steoarthritis is a chronic and progressive disease that is caused by degenerative changes in the articular cartilage, (this is the smooth white tissue that covers the ends of the bones where they come together to form joints) Whilst it primarily only affects cartilage, it can also affect the structures in the underlying bone and may also lead to decay of the meniscus (the cartilage tissue which act like shock absorbers in the knee joint.) and even the complete waste of the muscle itself. A question often asked by patients suffering from knee osteoarthritis is, whether or not they should take part in any physical exercise. Exercise works as a stimulating factor for the natural movements that will allow the nutrition and lubrication of the joint, keeping it flexible. The best form of exercise
for those who suffer from arthritis is low impact aerobics, resistance exercises and stretches. Aerobic exercise can include walking and swimming, and can play an important role in protecting the joint and cartilage. Stretching plays a fundamental role and promotes elongation of the structures surrounding the knee, reducing the contact between bone surfaces and consequently the intraarticular and reduces pain. The exercises to be avoided are those involving large impact, knee rotations and shear movements. The professional who is guiding the patient should also be aware to correct the patient’s posture where necessary, to avoid unnecessary damage to the joints. Exercise is very beneficial for these patients if well guided by a health or physical training professional. Duarte Arrais, Fisioclube, Fuzeta

Food Trends for 2014
Will You Be in Vogue? Sian Breslin, Home economist and founder of www.siansplan.com
W
hat was your favourite food trend from 2013? Did you even think there were such things as food trends? Family style dinners in restaurants, Korean flavouring in everything, mini desserts... They were all there in 2013. What Will We Be Eating in 2014? I've scoured the internet and read all manner of trend predictors. Based on this, I think 2014 is going to be different. Rather than foods from different countries taking centre stage or extreme cooking methods, we are scaling back, stripping the nonsense from cooking. It's the beginning of a new era of eating habits for us all, directly linked to recent food scandals, the state of our children's health and emerging technology services helping us to make better food choices 1. Real Food, Locally Sourced Consumers want real food i.e. food that has had little done to it except to make it edible (fresh, whole grains etc.) Consumers will want to know where ingredients are sourced especially meat and meat products. Traceability and locally and regionally sourced foods will become more important over the year for most households. Ready made meals will be less popular because consumers need to feel that they contributed
10
some skill into preparing the daily dinner. 2. Children's Nutrition Worrying information on the health issues associated with the food we eat and provide for our children is changing the way we think about food. Consumers are reading labels before they shop; some information is misleading and so clarification and further information on food labels will make food product choices quicker. Look out for health claims on labels, take time to trust products and take a holistic approach to nutrition. 3. Gluten Free / Alternative Grains Wheat has received bad publicity in recent years, with the result that larger numbers of celiac and non celiac consumers are seeking wheat free products. Products in their raw state or within baked products will be more easily available on the high street including buckwheat, corn, flaxseed and chia seeds for example 4. Technology With consumers spending hours online, many are now becoming aware of the diversity of technological solutions created to help home cooks. From recipe sites like BBC Good Food, to grocery sites like mysupermarket.co.uk, to (shameless plug alert) Sian's Plan, a new site, making meal planning through to grocery shopping online easy and fun is a good option for busy parents. In 2014 technology
will be used to create healthy eating as well as for social interaction, grocery shopping and game playing. 5. Brands That Care Brands that support causes such as food poverty, third world children's health and workers' rights, to environmental campaigns will win consumer support in 2014. Brands that have research backed claims (i.e. Flora Pro Active) will also win consumer support. 6. Other Food Trends Other food trends include the continuation of the reduce and reuse food trend, growth in artisan brands due to increased trust, support for new recipes using vegetables, for example chocolate mousse made with avocados, increased steaming as a healthy method of cooking but using flavoured liquids such as wine or stock (flavouring vegetables while maintaining the nutritional value) and new support for healthy eating programmes such as the Mediterranean diet which very importantly contains all five food groups. 7. Top Ingredients Simplicity, health properties and availability seem to be the order of the year with lemons, porridge, seaweed, tea infused desserts and cocktails and egg yolks expected to lead in 2014. So there it is. I believe healthier eating will continue to trend in 2014. Anybody want to put any money on it?

Roman Vila of Montinho das Laranjeiras Alcoutim’s riverside Roman Vila of Montinho das Laranjeiras, some 8km away from the town, has been given the status of ‘monument of public interest’ for its architectural and historic contribution to the area.
T
he ruins were discovered after the “great flood of the Guadiana” in 1876. Following government orders, archaeologist Estácio da Veiga began excavation work at the site in 1877, but it was only in 1990 that archaeological studies were carried out. Due to its riverside location, communities were attracted to the Villa in Roman times - with sections of the site dating back to the first century - and were crucial to the development of the local economy. Official publication of the site’s new status took place on December 11 by the Secretariat of State for Culture, under Portaria nº883/2013. The site is open to the public all year round and entry is free of charge.

Why Aesthetic Physiotherapy? Aesthetic Physiotherapy is responsable for the evaluation and treatment of disorders based on changes in the functionality of the integumentary system. Physical therapy began to take an interest in this area with the aim of, through their knowledge of anatomy and physiology, providing a more effective and safe treatment for the patient. Skin diseases and cosmetic problems significantly affect self-esteem. The discomfort and psycho-emotional effects are often more serious than the physical changes caused by pathology, interfering negatively on quality of life of the individual.
14
Promoting well-being and quality of life should be a priority for the health professional, and for this reason that physical therapy has been increasingly interested in this area. For the North American Physical Therapy Association (APTA), it is the responsibility of the therapist not only to maintain and promote physical function, but also the well-being and quality of life. So, the APTA recognizes the Aesthetic Physiotherapy as responsible for maintaining the integrity of the integumentary system. Aesthetic Physiotherapy is divided into two main areas: reconstructive (ulcers, scars, wounds, burns) and aesthetic: • Skin aging (wrinkles , blemishes and devitalized skin) • Acne • Rosacea • Cellulitis • Localized fat • Laxity (skin and muscle )
• Stretch Marks • Lymphatic and / or venous edema • Preoperative and postoperative Why Clinical Pilates? Clinical Pilates is a form of physical exercise that focuses on posture, core stability, balance, control, strength, flexibility, and breathing. The Pilates Method was developed by Joseph Pilates in the early 20th century in Germany. These days, Clinical Pilates is often used in conjunction with physiotherapy as a means of treating a variety of injuries, particularly those of the neck and back. This is based on literature that demonstrates strong evidence to support the use of therapeutic exercise in the management of patients with injuries, particularly low back pain. Clinical Pilates focuses on the retraining and recruitment of these stabilizing muscles (core stability) as well as improving posture, strength and flexibility.

he holiday period is traditionally the time for fishermen to have their boats repaired while they enjoy a well earned rest and time with their families over Christmas and New Year. Dias & Sabina, Lda is a family run business in Olh達o, and has been trading for over 35 years. Still using traditional techniques, Dias was kind enough to let us have a wander around the yard and watch his team at work, repairing and restoring everything from large ferry boats, to small fishing boats. It was great to see such amazing craftsmanship in progress. I hope you enjoy the photos!

oulé is located 16km north west out of Faro and is a sizable market town and centre of public administration with a mainly local population. There are a number of attractions including historical landmarks. The Loulé Municipal market will catch your eye immediately with it's large colourful Moorish-inspired building. It houses a frequent and bustling produce market, which dominates the centre of town. Every Saturday the stalls spill out into the streets around the market building where you can buy most of your groceries as well as gourmet products and various other items such as flowers and gifts or watch everyday life from one of the many coffee shops lining

the outside walls and streets. Loulé has a number of modern and historical features including: The church of Nossa Senhora da Piedade, which is a modern church situated just outside town with an unusual large domed shape. It is an important place of pilgrimage and can be found on the road towards Boliqueime. The castle at Loulé dates back to 13th century Moorish origins. Only parts of the original structure remain which includes three towers that can be visited for free. They formed part of the city walls and there is still an old city gate, the Portas do Céu. He implemented town planning throughout Portugal and made multiple socio-economic improvements possible, including building the suspension bridge, the Ponte 25 Abril in Lisbon, but also building and improving roads and schools throughout Portugal. The Municipal museum of Archaeology - is a small museum located next to the castle and features artifacts found in the region dating back to Roman times and further to Paleolithic and Neolithic ages. The Convento do Espirito Santo is a former 17th century monastery and now a private university and art gallery Loulé hosts one of the largest carnival events every year in the Algarve with a big colourful procession along the main avenues in the centre of town in February.

e are living in difficult financial times. The tax burden in Portugal has risen over recent years as part of government imposed austerity measures. More and more companies are now obliged to make use of electronic billing software which must be certified by the Portuguese Tax Authority, the Direcção Geral de Contribuições e Impostos (DGCI). In addition to the details of the issuer (The Property Management Company) it also includes the details of the client (The Owner of the Property). When issued, these electronic invoices are automatically submitted to the Portuguese tax authorities. This makes the lives of tax inspectors all the much easier where as ‘in the old days’ they had to leave their office for an audit. With regard to rental income from your property in Portugal, there are possibilities to lower your tax burden while still being in compliance with the law. If you are the owner of a property and have rented it out in 2013, it is time to start preparing your tax return in Portugal. On all income earned in Portugal, tax must be paid. Rental income is no different. If you are a resident, the rental income is added to your worldwide income and charged at a progressive rate. As a non-resident you pay a flat rate of 28% (was previously 16,5%) of rental income after deductible items. Some of the more important deductible items are IMI (council tax), building insurance (excluding content) and condominium fees. This applies to long term rentals. Portugal has established double taxation treaties with most countries in Europe and the tax you pay here

Many homeowners who rent out their property on a short term basis (short term holiday lets) mistakenly file their tax return under the above regime. This originates back to the days when it was not possible to obtain a rental license (Licença de Alojamento Local) for reasons beyond the control of the owner, even though it was obliged by law. This changed with amendments made in 2008 which at the same time simplified the registration requirements. Regardless of paying your taxes, in order to rent out your property on a short term holiday letting basis you need to have a rental license (Licença de Alojamento Local). Once you have this license you can register the letting of the property at the local finance department as an activity. This regime allows you to deduct 80% of gross income as operating expenses without having to proof (invoices) these expenses. The balance is taxable at 25%, effectively reducing your overall tax rate to 5% of gross rental income. Your tax assessment in Portugal is final, according to double taxation

treaties throughout the European Union. In other words, you do not have to report this income again in our tax filing in your home country. As with most cash strapped governments, Portugal needs to widen its tax net to reduce its ballooning budget deficit. Austerity measures implemented in 2012 and 2013 will be followed by additional austerity measures in 2014, but this will not be enough to bring down the deficit. Expect the government to clampdown on tax evasion more than ever before, they have already hired hundreds of new tax inspectors with more to follow. At Happy Homes Algarve we specialise in providing full property management services for home owners from all around the world. Paint in a day!
Paint your own oil-picture in one day – even if you never painted before.Have you ever wished you could paint but did not know where to begin?
A
ttila HAUSER, certified Instructor, paints with you within a 1-day session a ready-to-frame picture in his own studio in Moncarapacho/Olhão with the easy Bob-Ross-Technique, designed to enable anyone to paint and create some wonderful landscape or single flower picture - even if you have never painted before. You do not even have to be able to draw! The “wet-on-wet-technique” is the application of wet paint on top of wet paint without sketching, omitting the traditional technique of waiting for each layer to dry. From your own talents in just few seconds skies, clouds, trees, flowers, palms, beaches, lakes or waterfalls are painted. He teaches easy “step-bystep” painting and after a few hours your picture is finished.
It is so easy; there are no secrets behind it - You can do it too! You have nothing to buy. Have fun and realize your dreams. We work in maximum groups of 3 people and Attila paints at the same time in front of you, explaining all the details and assisting if necessary. Everybody is painting the same subject but at the end every picture looks slightly different in terms of color, shape, mixture and personal "handwriting". The 1 day class costs € 70 including all material. You have nothing to bring except a smile and a positive attitude. Classes are open to anyone over 16 years; beginners, advanced or artistically undiscovered. We finish the class in the late afternoon and you take your masterpiece with you at home. No experience necessary – nor investment!
Realize your dreams ! If you do not paint yourself, surprise a friend with a gift-certificate for a 1-day class. Attila Hauser, born 1946 in Zurich/ Switzerland, has been painting for several years with watercolors, acrylic & classic style oil techniques. Some years ago he studied the “wet-on-wet-technique” and in 2012 became a certified Bob-RossInstructor CRI. He speaks English, German and Portuguese. All motives you will see on his page www. joyfulpainting.wix.com/algarve have been painted in 4-5 hours. Learning Portuguese The first in our series following David Holland's experiences learning Portuguese as an Expat.
T
his is, by way of a general introduction, the first of a series of monthly features in which I shall share my experiences of trying to learn Portuguese from scratch and perhaps re-energize those of you who may have lost some of that initial enthusiasm! Month 1 Getting started: Having arrived in Tavira after a booze-cruise across the Bay of Biscay, followed by the drive down from Bilbao, it was time to get to grips with the basics of Portuguese. I was aware that Portuguese is a Latin based tongue sharing a common ancestry with Italian, Spanish and, to a lesser extent, French. Many Portuguese words looked familiar and together with my prior knowledge of French, everything looked set for an easy ride... a couple of CD’S and a guide to the Portuguese language
28
were to hand which, together with regular visits to local bars, should, I thought, be a sound recipe for speedy progress. After the first week I realised it was not going to be an easy ride for a number of reasons; first of all, my original aim to learn 30/40 words on a daily basis was proving unrealistic. The CD’s were fine for the grammar but the overriding difficulty was understanding the spoken word. This, I soon realised, would be the biggest hurdle however much study was done. It would take time to become attuned, whether talking with Portuguese friends, or trying to follow the impossibly fast diction of the football commentators. I would like, however, to end this introductory article on an optimistic note by pointing out that there are hundreds of English words ending in ‘tion’ whose counterpart in
Portuguese ends in ‘cão.’ Thus English speakers have at their disposal from the outset a substantial Portuguese vocabulary. In the vast number of cases the meaning of the word in each language is the same, eg information and informacão. There are of course exceptions and care should be exercised with the word ‘constipation’ whose Portuguese version ‘constipação’ is used to describe the common cold. Next month will focus on useful expressions and the writer’s progress with Portuguese verbs, regular and irregular. David Holland

Caldo Verde Delicious
(Portuguese Kale Soup) Delicious and healthy! Try this traditional Portuguese soup, the perfect winter warmer
C
aldo Verde is a Portuguese soup made with kale (or collard greens) and potatoes. It originated in the northern province of Minho. The broth is flavored with potatoes, garlic, and onions, then pureed before very thin ribbons of greens and sliced Chouriço are added. Caldo Verde is often served with Broa (Portuguese Cornbread). Be sure to slice the kale as thinly as possible. You can remove the middle stems, stack the leaves on top of one another, wrap up, and thinly slice. Prep Time: 45 minutes Cook Time: 30 minutes 6-8 servings Ingredients • 1/4 cup olive oil • 10 ounces Chouriço or Spanish Chorizo • 1 large Spanish onion, diced • salt and white pepper to taste • 2-4 garlic cloves, sliced • 6 medium potatoes, peeled and diced • 8 cups cold water (half can be chicken stock) • 1 pound kale or collard greens, middle stems removed
Preparation method: In a large pot, drizzle olive oil over medium heat. Slice the Chouriço into 1/4 inch thick circles and add to hot oil. Fry until lightly browned, 3-5 minutes. Use a slotted spoon to remove sausage, keeping all the drippings in the pot.
30
Add the diced onions and sprinkle with salt. Cook, stirring occasionally, until softened and translucent. Stir in garlic slices and cook until fragrant, about 1 minute. Add the diced potatoes and cover with the water. Bring to a boil, then decrease heat to medium low. Simmer until the potatoes are fork tender, 15-20 minutes. Remove from heat.
Use an immersion blender (or carefully transfer to a blender) to puree the soup. Slice the kale into strips as thinly as possible. Bring the soup back to a boil, stir in the kale, reduce heat, and simmer until wilted, about 2 minutes. Season with salt and pepper. Serve immediately with Chouriço.

5 Things You Didn't Know About Kale 1
We don't typically think of our greens as sources of even healthful fats. But kale is actually a great source of alpha-linoleic acid (ALA), the omega-3 fatty acid that's essential for brain health, reduces Type 2 diabetes risk and boosts heart health as well. Each cup has 121 mg of ALA, according to Dr. Drew Ramsey's book 50 Shades of Kale. Queen of Vitamin A? Kale has 133 percent of a person's daily vitamin A requirement -- more than any other leafy green,
It Has More Vitamin C Than An Orange! One cup of chopped kale has 134 percent of your recommended daily intake of vitamin C, while a medium orange fruit has 113 percent of the daily C requirement. That's particularly noteworthy because a cup of kale weighs just 67 grams, while a medium orange weighs 131 grams. In other words? Gram for gram, kale has more than twice the vitamin C as an orange. It's ... Kind Of Fatty (In A Good Way!).

It Is More Likely To Be 'Dirty'! According to the Environmental Working Group, kale is one of the most likely crops to have residual pesticides. The organization recommends choosing organic kale (or growing it yourself!).

Part two of your complete guide to growing Roses.
Rose THE
32

When to Plant • Bare Root Roses -An easy and inexpensive option for early season planting. Late winter is the best time plant bare-root roses. • Container Roses - A container rose already has plenty of leaves and maybe some blooms. Early spring is the best time to set out plants grown in nursery containers (vs. bare-root, packaged plants). Step-by-Step instructions for Planting Roses If you have a bare root plant, soak it in a bucket of water before planting. For roses that are potted, you can water the pot thoroughly and let it sit until ready to plant. Dig a hole approximately 15 inches deep and 18 inches wide. If planting bare root roses, form a small mound of soil in the center of the planting hole. If you live in a colder area, plant a bit deeper and consult with your local garden center. Add a small handful of bonemeal to the planting hole. Spade in some compost or peatmoss to loosen the soil. Mix the soil you took out of the hole with more compost or peat moss. Remove the rose from the pot. Carefully place in the hole and shovel the extra soil around the new plant. Plant the rose with the crown slightly deeper than the original soil. The crown or bud union should be about 1 inch under the soil Gently firm the rose into its new home and water well. Stand back and watch it grow! Rose Care To provide care for your roses and ensure you get the most out of your roses, there are a few simple steps you can take to have a beautiful and easy-to-enjoy garden. Water Adequately To assist in rose care, only a select few parts of the country can rely on rainfall to be an adequate source of water for roses. The actual frequency of watering will depend on your soil and climate as well as the age of the plant. Try watering
1 2 3 4
www.eastalgarvemag.com
the soil around your rose a few mornings a week - water slowly, until the soil is thoroughly soaked 12 to 18 inches deep. Try to keep water from splashing onto foliage as this can spread diseases. Feed Regularly While cared for roses honored by our Region's Choice initiative only need fertilizing once a year, most roses appreciate an occasional feeding. The easiest way to remember when to feed your roses, is to think of fertilizer like a reward for the plant: the first feeding should be done when the bush first leafs out. For the remainder of the growing season, fertilize after each flush of blooms, and stop fertilizing about 2 months before christmas. You can use any commercial rose food or general-purpose fertilizer applied according to manufacturer instructions. Scratch dry fertilizers into the soil beneath the leaves -avoid touching the canes or bud union - and water well. Mulch Generously Mulch, as an element to rose care, helps minimize weeds, keeps the soil moist and loose, and adds essential nutrients. Organic mulch is best - try wood chips and shavings, shredded bark, pine needles, cottonseed or cocoabean hulls, chipped oak leaves or peat nuggets. Apply in the spring just as the soil warms and before weeds start to grow. (It can also be applied anytime during the growing season provided weeds are removed and soil surface is lightly cultivated.) Spread 2 to 4 inches over the rose bed, leaving some space open around the base of each rose. Replace mulch as it deteriorates during the year. Prevent Pests The best pest prevention for roses is achieved by selecting topquality plants and then properly caring for them. How to Manage Insects There is nothing more burdensome than going through so much hard work, only to discover that irritating bugs have destroyed your roses. To keep those pests at bay, here
33
are a few tips to keep in mind: The use of summer oil, a type of horticulture oil, can control many potential outbreaks such as aphids, spider mites and thrips. However, since it contains traces of nitrogen and sulfur related compounds, it is not recommended for use in high temperature (exceeding 90 degrees.) Insecticidal soaps are a type of soap that is formulated to contain high insect-killing properties while being harmless to most plants. They are a very useful combatant in eliminating many bugs which plague roses. The cheapest and easiest method to manage insect problems is to use a good, strong spray of water to knock off many of the insects dwelling on your plant. How to Manage Disease In addition to purchasing the right type of rose, or if you are unsure of the type of rose currently in your garden, these tips should help keep you safe from painstaking diseases; • Sulfur-based fungicides are the best choice to eliminate fungal diseases. However, like Summer Oil, they are not recommended for use in very hot temperature (exceeding 90°). • A mixture of baking soda, horticultural oil and water can help control powdery mildew buildup in
34
most rose gardens. • Antitranspirants form a thin film of wax, plastic or silicones over the leaves and reflect excessive radiation. Doing so ensures the leaves maintaining moisture and combats fungal growth. • Neem oil, a vegetable oil pressed from the fruits and seeds of neem tree, is perhaps one of the most versatile products to manage and eliminate diseases. Neem oil can reduce and control the spread of mildew, black spots and rust while being completely organic Other Ways to Reduce Disease There are also further steps to take to make your gardening life much easier and rid of disease. Make sure to plant your roses properly: roses should have nutritious soil that’s fertilized and mulched, receives lots of sunshine (essential to having the leaves dried by night-time), good air circulation, and plenty of water. Annual pruning removes any damaged or diseased canes and prevents the onset of infections Prune to Promote Blooms If you want to maximize rose care, don't be nervous about pruning there is no evidence that anyone ever killed a plant with pruning shears! To
prune roses you'll need the following supplies: sharp curved-edge pruning shears; long-handled lopping shears, and gardening gloves can help protect you from thorns. Pruning roses controls the size and shape of rose plants. Generous pruning creates bigger plants and eventually more flowers per plant. Selective pruning of top growth can produce bigger, but fewer, blooms. Here are some tips: • For modern varieties, pruning keeps them blooming repeatedly all summer long. • Well-established hybrid teas, floribundas and grandifloras should be pruned early each spring after the winter protection has been removed and just as the buds begin to swell. • Old-fashioned roses and climbers that bloom only once a year should be pruned immediately after flowering since they bloom on wood from the previous year's growth. The diagram shows the preferred angle to prune. These are the basic guidelines for growing roses successfully and remember that the best plants are those most suited to your environment, which means you can enjoy the beauty of your roses all year round.

appy New Year to you all. Let’s hope that 2014 sees a change in fortunes and the economy starts to show real signs of recovery, both in the UK and here in The Algarve. What can we expect in terms of exchange rates for the coming year? It is probably not possible to look too far ahead as economic recovery in the UK and Europe is still very much in the early stages. Whilst we saw positive progress towards the end of last year we are by no means out of the woods and until such time as there is real evidence of sustained progress we are unlikely to see the Pound increasing much beyond the 1.20 mark against the Euro. Indeed if Sterling is too strong it could have a negative impact so you can see the Bank of England keeping a close eye on developments before considering a rise in interest rates to tempt investors back to the UK. For the early part of 2014 it is more likely that the Euro will prove to be the stronger currency which would push exchange rates lower. If we have

Portuguese Budget 2014, how may this affect you?
M
any people are unsure about the changes that the Portuguese 2014 Budget will produce in their tax returns and how this may affect their lives, and or their companies. Although most of the alterations have not been published yet, I will try to explain briefly some of the tax changes arising from the Portuguese Budget 2014 and how these may affect you and your business. Please note that these are just some highlights and as these are yet to be published, the final versions may be slightly different. Singular Tax – IRS The IRS table is unchanged, there are no alterations to the income bands and the applicable tax rates. Also all the boundaries for tax deductions and tax benefits remain unchanged. Health insurance or sickness It is proposed that from 2014, any insurance premiums for health or disease, paid by the companies to their employees or relatives, ceases to be taxed. In fact, as long as this is generally paid to all the staff, the employee does not have to pay tax
on it (currently IRS applies). Income derived from the liquidation and distribution The IRS Code shall explicitly integrate the definition of surplus value (capital gain) and tax shall be paid on gains arising from the extinction, delivery of shares, company merge or acquired in connection with mergers, division or exchange of shares, etc. Corporate Tax - IRC Corporate tax reduced to 23%. It was the most awaited amendment of this IRC and the suspense will be maintained until the very last minute, but it seems that the corporate tax will be reduced over the next years. After the committee has recommended a gradual reduction (within five years, ie by 2018) of corporate tax rates to 19%, with the gradual elimination of municipal surcharge (up 1.5%) and state (between 3 and 5%), the government decided to lower the corporate tax rate by two percentage points, from 25 to 23% in 2014. Although not yet defined, in 2015 the income tax rate may drop back to 20% or 21%, then down further (to a value between 17 and 19%) in
2016. Regarding the municipal tax (derramas) these will only disappear in 2018. Simplified scheme for businesses with turnover of up to 200.000 euros The committee has set a limit for access to this simplified scheme for SMEs with an annual turnover up to 150.000 euros, but companies claimed an extension up to 500 000 euros. However, the Government's proposal turned out to be located at an intermediate level, rounding the 200 thousand euros. Thus the simplified regime may cover more than 300 000 companies, 74% of Portuguese businesses, including sole proprietors. Companies that adhere to the simplified scheme will not make special payments and will have simplified accounting obligations. On the reverse side, companies that adhere to the simplified regime will always pay tax, as this is based on the turnover, whether they've made a profit or not. Elimination of double taxation It is proposed that Portuguese companies that want to internationalize have an attractive

tax system similar to the most tax competitive countries like Germany, UK, France, Italy and Luxembourg. The exemption on dividends and capital gains for qualified investors will advance with the new IRC. To be exempted from double taxation, companies must have a minimum of 5% in the company (located abroad) from which the dividends or capital gains arise. Limit of one million euros on financial charges With the intention to penalize companies with high debt levels, the new law will limit companies to deduct financial costs and loans, only up to a million euros, compared with the current three million euros. Deadline for reporting losses increased to 12 years Another key point of the new IRC:
www.eastalgarvemag.com
instead of the current five-year period for tax losses, the government will accept 12 years, although changing the limits of deduction from 75% to 70% of taxable income. The new deadline should apply only to losses generated after January 1, 2014. Reinvestment of profits give entitlement to exemption of 10 % on Corporate Tax Aiming to increase the capitalization of companies and boost the investment, from 2014 all companies that retain and reinvest the profits will be entitled to a 10% reduction of corporate tax. The Government stressed that the measure serves to capitalize businesses and increase their investment flows. Simplification of reporting requirements To simplify the reporting obligations
imposed on businesses and reduce administrative costs, the new IRC will eliminate more than 20 of these obligations by reducing the bureaucratic process. There are currently 68 obligations that take an average of 23 hours to accomplish by each business. Last but not least, the government announced that from 1st of January, it will be possible for each tax payer to book an appointment at the local Tax Office. This a very important decision, which unfortunately in its experimental phase, will only be possible in the Lisbon area. Let’s hope this is available in the Algarve soon! There are many other changes to the tax and if you would like to discuss your particular circumstances, please do not hesitate to contact us, because All Finance Matters!

UPHILL STRUGGLE
O
All the latest local sports news from Chris Wright.
lhanense had a disastrous December with three consecutive defeats that have left them propping up the table. Just under a thousand fans turned up at the Algarve Stadium for the game against Rio Ave and those that stayed away made the right decision! A shocking performance by the home team that saw full-back Seric sent-off after seventy minutes and then former Olhanense favourite Ukra administered the coup-de-grâce ten minutes later when he netted from close range. A week later and the fans were under no illusions as Benfica rolled into town. The Eagles boss Jorge Jesus, who played for Olhanense in the ‘70s, was serving his final match suspension following his fight with police officers after the game with V.Guimarães in September. Olhanense silenced the large contingent of Benfica fans when they took the lead after just seven minutes.
42
Dionisi had his rasping shot parried by Artur but the little Senegalese livewire Femi was on hand to smash the ball into roof of the net. Benfica came back strongly but were more than fortunate with their equaliser. Nico Gaitan centred from the left where Lima was on hand to head past keeper Belec. TV action replays showed that Lima was clearly in an off-side position. Olhanense pressed forward - was this the same team that had been so abject the week before? - but when Regula picked up the ball thirty metres out there seemed little danger. The tall midfielder took two strides and hammered the ball past Artur who was slow to react. The first time all season that the ‘rubro-negros’ had scored more than one goal in a league game! Again Benfica levelled the score when Matic netted from outside the box. An exciting forty-five minutes that had thrilled the crowd of over 6,000 on a chilly winter’s night. Substitute Sulejmani made an
explosive impact, scoring immediately after the restart to put the Lisbon side ahead for the first time. Benfica closed the game down and ran down the clock to deny Olhanense a point they richly deserved. LITTLE PORTUGAL IN LONDON Four years after my first visit to Café Portugal in the heart of Little Portugal in Vauxhall, London close to the New Covent Garden, I returned to watch the game against Benfica. Welcomed with open arms, although I was the only Olhanense fan in a café packed with Benfica supporters! This area of London has a thriving Portuguese community with numerous Portuguese cafes and restaurants. So if you are in the capital take the tube to Vauxhall and stroll down Lambeth Walk before enjoying a good coffee and ‘pastel de nata’ in South Lambeth Road. There are estimated to be some 27,000 Portuguese in this part of London, which makes it one of the largest communities within the 500,000

strong Portuguese British population. There is also a sizable Brazilian community residing in Little Portugal as well. Other areas in London with a considerable Portuguese population are Notting Hill and Ladbroke Grove. OLHANENSE BACK IN OLHÃO? Could the Algarve’s only Premiera Liga team be returning home? Indications are that the Portuguese Professional Football League will give permission for the Olhão based club to return to the Jose Arcanjo Stadium. The team has been exiled to the Algarve Stadium since the start of the season and many fans have boycotted games there,
only 585 turned up for the game with Arouca in October. The Jose Arcanjo pitch needed major renovation work and what fans thought would be a short stay at the Euro 2004 stadium has proved anything but. It appears that an administrative error by the team’s new owners allocated the Algarve as the club’s preferred venue. Home games this month are against V.Setúbal (weekend 11th/12th January) and V.Guimarães (weekend 18th/19th January). Invisible Spray For World Cup Finals
S
epp Blatter, FIFA President, has announced that a vanishing spray will be used at free-kicks to mark a line on the ground where the defensive wall and ball must be placed. The water-based product, which disappears about a minute after use, was successfully used during the Club World Cup in Marrakesh recently. The spray, developed by Brazilian Pablo Silva, has previously been used in matches in South America and Major League Soccer in America. Fans have become increasingly incensed when players encroach at a free-kick. The spray will be used to stop players in the defensive wall creeping closer to the ball, while a circle is also drawn where the ball is to be placed for a free-kick.

Vanishing spray to be used in World Cup finals
Some supporters would welcome the introduction of a vanishing spray for officials! This will also be the first time that goal-line technology is used to judge whether a ball has crossed the line. I well remember the time forty years ago when I played a few games on Hackney Marshes in East London. Over a hundred matches took place every weekend on pitches
only a few feet apart. Of course there were no goal nets in those days and referees - if you were lucky to get one - sometimes had difficulty determining whether a goal had been scored. 1970s technology came to the rescue with revolving posts and crossbars! If the ball hit either the post or bar the referee would dash up to see which way it was turning.

any amateurs get intimidated by tough shots. When this happens you become tense and forget about the keys to escaping the situation. Relax; run through your checklist of how to adjust your stance and swing. You don't always have to hit it a foot from the hole, be realistic with your expectations and try to understand how the ball will exit the bunker. One of the toughest shots on the golf course is when your ball is buried in the sand. This is because the central premise of sand play is that the club does not dig deeply into the sand. Club bounce is designed precisely to prevent this; the larger the bounce, the shallower the club will tend to dig. Therefore, the standard technique for sand play has to be modified slightly for buried lies. For effective play from a plugged lie you need to alter the clubface aim, your body alignment, ball position and the point where impact is made with the sand. 1 Club face should be aimed ‘square’. 2 Shoulder and stance alignment should be parallel to the ball to target line. 3 Ball position should be further back in the stance compared to the ball position of a shot in the bunker from a good lie. 4 Strike the sand forcefully about 2 inches behind the ball. 5 The intention should always be to make a full follow through, however player strength and severity of the lie will have an impact. Due to the nature of this shot the ball will not take on the amount of backspin normally expected and the trajectory of the ball will be lower therefore it is likely to roll more after landing.
