Welcome...
...to your July issue. Funny, the amount of people who came up to me in the last weeks of June, shrugged their shoulders and said "this time last year it was much warmer". Well summer is here! Please... no complaints of it being too hot! It only lasts a short time, remember to enjoy it! Of course the beach is a great place to stay cool, whether it be the sea breeze or the cool water. This month we visit beautiful Barril Beach. We went there late afternoon and enjoyed the wonderful sunset on the walk back, I hope you like the photographs. We also take a peek inside the recently renovated Convento das Bernardas, a beautifuly restored convent located in Tavira on the Ria Formosa and saltpans, which now contains modern apartments for sale or holidays lets. We introduce a special friend who will be writing a regular column: a Portuguese view on local history and culture, welcome to the team Ivo. Have a great month. Editor

Tavira celebrates in style
he streets, alleys and squares of Tavira were festooned with decorations and garlands as locals and tourists celebrated the Popular Saints Days and in particular Tavira Day last month. Jorge Botelho, Mayor of Tavira, inspected the Guard of Honour ‘Tavira Bombeiros’ before he and other dignitaries raised the flags of Tavira, Portugal and the EU. The Banda Musical de Tavira provided the musical accompaniment.

aro Mayor Macário Correia announced last week that he is temporarily suspending his mandate whilst awaiting the results of the appeal he presented to the Supreme Administrative Court earlier in June. The social democratic politician decided to present another appeal, following his conviction last year for violating regional and municipal land planning and management guidelines during his mandate as Mayor of Tavira, between 2005 and 2009. Despite the court judgement ordering the loss of his mandate in June 2012, Correia has stayed in charge of Faro Câmara until now.
Brits fined for playing Bingo for biscuits in Albufeira
A
ridiculous incident is causing controversy in the social networks among the British community resident in Portugal, it even made the headlines in 'The Sun', BBC and 'The Telegraph'. About 30 people - among holiday makers and expats, between the ages of 23 to 76 years old - got a surprise last Friday at “The Yorkshire Tavern” when they
were getting ready to give out the Bingo prizes: A tin of biscuits and a bar of chocolate. “They surrounded us like we were gangsters” bar manager Marianne Pittway, of 34, told 'The Sun'. According to their testimony, firstly undercover members of Albufeira’s GNR arrived and called for back up. All citizens were taken to the GNR
station by minibus. Even those who didn’t play bingo were charged for “witnessing illegal gambling”. No games can be organised in Portugal without the permission of the state authorities. The Bingo game was just for fun, but those involved were fined from 150 € to 700€.

Health expert Gareth Bullock gives us his advice on releaving chronic pain.

chronic pain
O
ne thing I have noticed from practicing the Bowen Technique is how after a treatment the first response a clients reports is a reduced level of pain. Pain is a vicious cycle, be it physical or emotional, when your sleep is interrupted by pain, the pain gets worse and more unmanageable. You get tired and unable to manage the pain levels on a daily basis and within a short amount of time things get out of control. The tips below on how to manage your pain are excellent to try, but I can highly recommend The Bowen Technique too. Learn deep breathing or meditation to help with chronic pain. Deep breathing and meditation are techniques that help your body relax, which eases pain. Tension and tightness seep from muscles as they receive a quiet message to relax. Although there are many ways to meditate, the soothing power of repetition is at the heart of some forms of meditation. Focusing on breathing, ignoring thoughts, and repeating a word or phrase -- a mantra -- causes the body to relax. Reduce stress in your life. Stress intensifies chronic pain.

Negative feelings like depression, anxiety, stress, and anger can increase the body's sensitivity to pain. By learning to take control of stress, you may find some relief from chronic pain. Several techniques can help reduce stress and promote relaxation. Listening to soothing, calming music can lift your mood. There are even specially designed relaxation tapes or CDs for this. Mental imagery relaxation (also called guided imagery) is a form of mental escape that can help you feel peaceful. It involves creating calming, peaceful images in your mind. Progressive muscle relaxation is another technique that promotes relaxation. Boost chronic pain relief with the natural endorphins from exercise. Endorphins are brain chemicals that help improve your mood while also blocking pain signals. Exercise has another pain-reducing effect, it strengthens muscles, helping prevent re-injury and further pain. Plus, exercise can help keep your weight down, reduce heart disease risk, and control blood sugar levels, especially important if you have diabetes. Ask your doctor for an exercise routine that is right for you. If you have certain health conditions,

Health like diabetic neuropathy, you will need to be careful about the types of activities you engage in; your doctor can advise you on the best physical activities for you. Cut back on alcohol, which can worsen sleep problems. Pain makes sleep difficult and alcohol can make sleep problems worse. If you're living with chronic pain, drinking less or no alcohol can improve your quality of life. Join a support group. Meet others living with chronic pain. When you're with people who have chronic pain and understand what you're going through, you feel less alone. You also benefit from their wisdom in coping with the pain. Also, consider meeting with a mental health professional. Anyone can develop depression if they're living with chronic pain. Getting counselling can help you learn to cope better and help you avoid negative thoughts that make pain worse, so you have a healthier attitude. Asking for help is a sign of strength, not weakness. Don't smoke. It can worsen chronic pain. Smoking can worsen painful circulation problems and increase risk of heart disease and cancer. Track your pain level and activities every day. To effectively treat your pain, your doctor needs to know how you've been feeling between visits. Keeping a log or journal of your daily "pain

score" will help you track your pain. At the end of each day, note your pain level on the 1 to 10 pain scale. Also, note what activities you did that day. Take this log book to every doctor visit -- to give your doctor a good understanding of how you're living with chronic pain and your physical functioning level. Get a massage for chronic pain relief. Massage can help reduce stress and relieve tension -- and is being used by people living with all sorts of chronic pain, including back and neck pain. Massage by an Osteopath or Bowen Practitioner will significantly help. Eat a healthy diet if you're living with chronic pain. A well-balanced diet is important in many ways -- aiding your digestive process, reducing heart disease risk, keeping weight under control and improving blood sugar levels. To eat a low-fat, low-sodium diet, choose from these: fresh fruits and vegetables; cooked dried beans and peas; whole-grain breads and cereals; low-fat cheese, milk, and yogurt; and lean meats. Find ways to distract yourself from pain so you enjoy life more. When you focus on pain, it makes it worse rather than better. Instead, find something you like doing, an activity that keeps you busy and thinking about things besides your pain. You might not be able to avoid

Details always make the difference!
I
n this new article, I will try to show you details that can make you look in a different way, with a different brain to things, places and people from Algarve. Today we will focus in Tavira, the place where I met my good friend Richard Bassett, “EastAlgarve Magazine” Publisher and Designer and also Editor. The XIV, XV and XVI centuries were Tavira´s greatest under the Portuguese Crown. In 1359 A.D., King Pedro I realizes that Tavira´s harbor is growing fast, competing with seaports as Lisbon. Commercial exchange was done with other
European cities, Bruges being the most important. Salt, fish, wine and fruits were exported whereas cereals, tissues, butter, horses and tin-plate were imported. In 1415, Tavira is the starting point of the Portuguese fleet to the north of Africa. From here more than 200 warships and 45.000 men depart for the conquest of Ceuta. In 1527, Tavira is the biggest city in all Algarve leaving behind Lagos, Faro, Loulé or Silves. Only Lisbon, Oporto, Santarém and Elvas were most important in the whole Kingdom of Portugal and the Algarves. The main industry was the armory, about 10

factories manufactured and repaired armor, spears and rifles from the troops stationed in Africa. In 1580, Tavira´s seaport is closed, foreigners are not allowed to enter the city, city´s population drastically decreases, the black plague was in town to give a silent end in a golden age ! Even today the city offers clues to all this. A walk with eyes open in the old town can make you feel as an Agatha Christie or a Sherlock Holmes instead of feeling like a lobster on the beach…Wish you all a good month. Ivo Machado Nobre

convento das
bernardas
Once derelict and in a state of ruin, 500 years after it was built, the Bernardas Convent is once again one of Tavira's prized posessions.
T
he Bernardas Convent oozes 500 years of history from every pore. It was the largest convent building in the Algarve and the only one in the entire region belonging to the Cistercian Order. It was built on the orders of D.manuel I as a way of expressing his gratitude for the victory obtained in Arzila, North Africa, when the Moors abandoned the seige of the city. For three centuries, the Barnardas Convent sheltered nuns from the Alentejo region and the

Azores. The sisters made a name for themselves thanks to their manual skills in sweet making, especially caramels, religious icons (laminates) and sacred art (pottery and painting). The floor plan of the building was typically Cistercian in design: a square floor plan, two cloisters and a church dedicated to Our Lady of the Sorrows. As was the case with many monuments in Tavira, the Barnardas Convent was seriously damaged in the 1755 earthquake.
www.eastalgarvemag.com
However, the roughly-hewn Manueline portal, located on the church's north facade, survived not only this natural disaster but also remained untouched by the subsequent alterations and extensions carried out on the building. In 1834, following the extinction of religious orders in Portugal, the convent was sold at public auction. It then became a milling and steamed dough factory, at which time the original design underwent its greatest depersonalisation leading to a state of dilapidation.

Renowned architect Eduardo Souto Moura took up the gauntlet thrown down by the firm Entreposto, GestĂŁo ImobiliĂĄria to convert a historical monument into a dwelling, as has been happening in other European countries. The 78 villas range in size from studios to three bedrooms. High quality building materials, contemporary comfort and carefully-studied design are combined with the most innovative systems in telecommunications; this was the first complex in the Algarve to be equipped

with a fibre optic system for television, voice communications and Internet. Modern-day facilities and services offered by the Bernardas Convent include two saltwater swimming pools with Finnish overflow, video surveillance, doorman and a museum. The most visible aspect of this bold undertaking is the recuperation of the structure, maintaining the Manueline-Gothic portal and the original lines of the façade. Standing over the Ria Formosa and the mouth of the River Gilão, the Bernardas Convent affords a unique view over the centuries-old Tavira saltpans. It’s the perfect home in which to rub shoulders with five centuries of history…For information call 912 954 226, or see www. conventodasbernardas.com

Barril Beach B
arril Beach is a gorgeous beach located right in the middle of the 18km-long Ilha de Tavira (Island of Tavira) in the East Algarve. Being located on an island, you can’t go there by car so if you are driving, your best bet is to park your vehicle in the lovely village of Pedras D’El Rei. From there, you can cross a bridge by foot – over the Ria Formosa lagoon – that will take you to the island. The bridge is not very long and once you're on the other side, you will see a small, adorable train station right in front of you where you can either catch the picturesque miniature train (which will only set you back €1.50) or you can opt to take a pleasant 10-minute walk alongside the train tracks. Because of the train, Barril Beach is a favorite among children and you will find many children playing around while their parents rest

in the sand. The beach is situated right next to what was once a tuna station. The tuna station buildings are still being used, having been transformed into cafĂŠs, restaurants, and toilet facilities. A popular sight at Barril Beach is what has been named as the Anchor Graveyard: serving as further evidence of the old tuna station, you will see hundreds of anchors (which were used to secure the huge tuna nets to the sea bed) all lined up in the dunes, it really is a beautiful and unique sight. people will be gathered at entrance point and you only need to walk either left or right to find a quiet spot. Being a secluded beach, it is the perfect place to rest, at any time of the year. Late afternoon in July is a great time to visit Barril beach. Most people have gone home by then, and if you time it right, you'll be treated to a wonderful sunset on the walk or train ride back.

With property prices back at 2003/2004 levels, this is the right time to make your dream come true. From an investment point of view there is limited downside to property prices after the correction of the past 5 years, while the interest on your savings can hardly keep up with inflation. Actually, after tax and inflation you have a negative yield on savings. This is the price you pay for being risk averse. Unless you run a hedge fund, for most people there is nothing wrong with being risk averse during turbulent times. It protects you from losing money. However when markets stabilise, staying risk averse for too long can seriously erode the purchasing power of your savings. Although many new developments were built in the East Algarve prior to 2008, it still remains largely unspoilt. Also some beaches get crowded but there are also many stretches still little frequented, you just need to work a bit harder to find them. The real estate market is relatively still slow, but picking up. In this buyers market there are many attractively priced properties on the

(bread pudding)
his is not like the British bread and butter pudding. Instead being made of layers of bread, this bread (a few days old) is mashed up and soaked in milk overnight. This is another great one from the mother in law. I had some left over bread, and couldn’t bring myself to throw it out, so today I made bread pudding. (Even though it is 90 degrees!) It always goes down well. Ordinarily is should be made with raisins, but one of my kids doesn’t like them (I can never remember which
one), so this time I threw a banana in and the result was amazing, and it is so easy to make! You will need • 4/ 5 papo secos (bread rolls) broken up into small pieces • Mug of milk, approx. (just enough to reach the surface of the bread but not cover it). • 1 Cup of sugar. • 150g Butter, softened. • Lots of cinnamon. • 1 Banana or raisins, or both!
Soak the bread in the milk, in the fridge overnight. The next day add the butter and mix well, add the sugar, and lastly the egg. Make sure it is all mixed together well. Mash the banana into the mixture with the cinnamon and mix well. Turn into a flan case or soufflé dish and place in the top shelf of a hot oven for 35 minutes… When the top is golden and it doesn’t ‘wobble’ so much, it is ready. Bom Apetite!!

ydrangeas are workhorses in the garden. They produce sumptuous petals of colour to add beauty to your garden. But they need not be forgotten once their flowers have died. Hydrangeas can be captured easily in dried flower arrangements, providing the last gasp of the summer garden. Pick the blooms on a clear dry day in late summer and hang to dry. H. macrophylla and H. paniculata 'Grandiflora' are especially good for drying. Most species of hydrangeas can be grown in either full sun or partial shade. They are resistant to most insects and diseases. They can be grown in a wide range of soil but prefer a rich, moist soil and should be planted where watering will not be a problem. Avoid dry windy sites, as their large, soft leaves lose water quickly, especially on hot, windy days, causing the foliage to wilt. Flowers are produced on the new growth; therefore, it is important that hydrangeas be given some care each season to ensure that vigorous new growth occurs. Irrigate plants weekly to replace moisture loss. Prune flower stems after they have bloomed. Fertilize hydrangeas in early spring with a complete granular fertilizer at the rate of 2 pounds per one hundred square feet. Apply fertilizer as broadcast top dressing. During long periods of drought, water thoroughly each week. Pruning: There are many different types of hydrangeas; many require different methods of pruning. First, one must know the identity of the hydrangea in the landscape, so the proper pruning procedure can be implemented.

Hydrangea arborescens 'Grandiflora' -- Hills-of-Snow Hydrangea Prune hills-of-snow hydrangea to the ground line each winter or early spring because it flowers abundantly on new growth, and is frequently killed back during winter. If a larger shrub is desired (3+ feet) and/or it is not killed back over the winter, prune less severely. Remove certain branches to the ground; cut others back at varying heights from 1 to 3 feet. Hydrangea paniculata 'Grandiflora' -- Pee Gee Hydrangea this is the most commonly planted hydrangea because of its massive displays of large white flowers in mid-to-late summer. They gradually turn to pink and remain on the plant in a semi-dried condition long after the leaves have fallen. Pruning involves the removal of dead flowers, if unattractive, and an annual corrective pruning of vigorous shoots. Thin and/or cut back the previous season's growth in late winter or early spring, since flower clusters occur on newly developing branches. Without regular pruning, this hydrangea can rapidly become

quite overgrown and out of scale in the landscape. It can, however, be developed into a single or multistemmed tree form. Hydrangea macrophylla -Hortensia or Florist Hydrangea this is a commonly grown hydrangea with large globe-shaped flowers. It is frequently forced by florists and sold as an indoor pot plant during the spring season. Once moved outdoors, however, colour is dependent upon the pH of the soil in which it is grown: blue if acid; pink if alkaline. There are also several white-flowered cultivars. Pruning can be accomplished at two different times. Late summer is more desirable, since most Hortensia types flower only from the end buds of upright or lateral shoots produced during late summer and fall of the previous season. Prune as soon as the flowers have faded and strong shoots are developing from the lower parts of the stems and crown. Remove at the base some of the weaker shoots that are both old and new. Always try to keep several stems of old productive wood, with a sufficient number of stout new stems that will flower the following season. Early spring pruning
(March), although acceptable, will result in the sacrificing of bloom for that growing season. Pruning this species too late in the fall (after September) is harmful. New growth, both vegetative and reproductive, will not develop proper maturity. Hortensia is a good seashore shrub; flowering is more profuse in an open, sunny location. This, however, increases its vulnerability to bud killing. Winter protection of the plant should be initiated in December to preserve buds for next year's flowering. Tie the shoots together and wrap with burlap. If left unprotected, delay any spring pruning until the buds swell in order to determine which wood needs to be removed, and then cut back to below the point of injury. Hydrangea quercifolia -Oak leaf Hydrangea This plant is grown primarily for its handsome oak leaf-shaped foliage, excellent fall colour, attractive flowers and interesting winter bark. It is ideally suited to a lightly shaded or protected location, and if grown in an exposed site, it is subject to some winter dieback. Prune back in early spring to remove dead wood. Cut back to below the point of injury

and remove old wood to the base. Hydrangea anomala petiolaris -Climbing Hydrangea climbing hydrangea is a desirable mid-summer flowering woody vine that attaches itself by aerial roots to brick, masonry or wood. It requires little or no pruning. If certain shoots have grown out of bounds, reduce their length in summer. Frequently, concern is expressed about climbing vines that may be inundating a tree and causing irreparable damage. There has never been a proven case of damage occurring from climbing hydrangea, however. Colour Confusions: The colour of the pink and blue varieties is determined by the degree of soil acidity. Pink varieties develop colour best in the greenhouse at a soil pH of 6.5 to 7.0., while the best blue colour occurs at pH 5.0 to 5.5. The hydrangea flower is small and insignificant but is surrounded by showy bracts. The anthocyanin pigment will be pink or blue, depending upon the incorporation of either iron or aluminium in its molecules. Insufficient aluminium is absorbed by the plant at a pH of 6.5 to 7.0 so iron is used. As the pH drops to 5.0 to 5.5,
www.eastalgarvemag.com
Luz de Tavira
aluminium becomes more soluble, is absorbed by the plant and becomes part of the anthocyanin molecule resulting in blue coloration. White hydrangeas contain no pigment in their sepals (although some may develop as the blossom ages). They may be grown as either pink or blue, the only indication being given by the small petals. Common white varieties are Sister Therese and Regula. Rose Supreme, Merritt's Supreme and Merveille are examples of varieties which can be blue or pink depending on soil conditions. To maintain pink coloration, enough limestone should be incorporated in the soil at the time of planting to keep the pH at the above levels. The aluminium necessary for blue colour will become soluble in nearly any soil at a pH of 5.0 to 5.5. Depressing the pH with aluminium sulphate will also supply soluble aluminium. Since soluble phosphates precipitate aluminium, a fertilizer containing low phosphorous or none at all should be used (13-0-20 and 15-015 are examples). While these methods of changing the flower colour can be used, it's
To Tavira Look out for the Yellow flags
not a wise idea to do it indefinitely. You risk severely altering the soil pH thereby making it difficult for the plant to utilize nutrients. Always get the soil tested before altering it. If you really like different colours in your hydrangeas then get many different cultivars!

Braaiwood Traditional Namibian Hardwood
Sustainable Namibian hardwood, imported from the hot deserts of Namibia, for all your energy and cooking needs. Special Namibian hardwood is introductory Offer perfect for BBQ's, fireplaces,Smokers, Pizza and wood burning stoves and is the most cost efficient natural fuel.
WOOd V CharCOal This natural fully sustainable wood burns with a sweet smelling smoke which enhances the food to the flavour you expect from a BBQ. This is is caused by the uniquely scented natural oils within the wood. The coals burn hotter and longer than any other wood making it more cost efficient.

When using charcoal to BBQ, that distinctive charcoal smell can transfer to the food causing an unpleasant taste. Some charcoal contains a fuel accelerant for easy lighting, and although non toxic, it can leave a chemical taste on the food. You also do not get that distinctive smokey BBQ taste when using charcoal. While cheaper (but not by much)charcoal cannot match the incredible flavour that is achieved when barbequeing on natural wood, and Sekelbos Braaiwood in my opinion is the best natural wood for cooking.

Unlike banks FX Companies focus solely on foreign currency transfers which allows us to keep our overheads lower and offer you better exchange rates than the banks. Some FX Companies can also offer their services free of fees or charges. The net result is that your £’s or €’s go further and you make savings. One question that Clients will want answered is how secure and safe is my money? When selecting an FX Company make sure that their Clients funds are held in secure Client Accounts, which are entirely separate from day to day trading accounts. In the event that anything were to happen to the firm the bank would return your funds to you. Administrators, liquidators, creditors, etc would have no access to these funds. The FX

Some readers will also want to know how long it takes to transfer funds. If you are reliant on a monthly income then you don’t want any delay. Premier FX undertake to forward funds within a maximum of 48 hours. In reality funds normally arrive within 24 hours if not sooner. So it is safe, quick and you save money! Why bother with the banks? We have all been affected by fluctuating exchange rates. 7 years ago we enjoyed €1.5 to the £ but we can also remember when we were heading towards 1 to 1! The foreign currency exchange market is volatile and predicting what will happen with future rates is difficult. Every week sees the release of one financial report or another that gives a clue as to the recovery in the UK or Eurozone. Whilst there have been
some encouraging results in the UK it seems the markets and investors are still nervous and as a result the exchange rate has struggled to get much beyond 1.17. The uncertainty surrounding the impending change of the Governor of the Bank of England is not helping either as it is believed he may change financial policy to stimulate growth in the UK which could see the £ fall significantly against the € in the short term. How can you protect yourself against fluctuating rates? Speak to your Account Manager. That is what they are there for! Everyone’s situation is different so you need to find a solution that satisfies your needs. Do you need to make occasional or regular transfers? Can you risk the exchange rate changing or would you prefer the certainty of a fixed rate so you can manage your budget? Your Account Manager should also be able to provide up to date information on the currency exchange market so you can make an informed decision.

purred on by the financial crisis, governments have become even more determined to attack offshore tax havens and evasion. Hundreds of bilateral Tax Information Exchange Agreements have been signed over recent years. Now there is a shift towards multilateral agreements which will see several countries all sharing information with each other. In due course, there is no reason to believe that this approach will not take place on a global basis. G5 multilateral pilot agreement The British, French, Spanish, German and Italian governments signed an automatic information exchange agreement, to operate on a multinational basis, in a bid to crack down on tax evasion. A wide range of financial information will be automatically exchanged between the five countries, and all others, most likely including Portugal, which sign up. The G5 pilot is based on the model agreements they negotiated with the US to comply with its Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act (FATCA). It provides that the information to be exchanged is: Name and address of account holder. Account number. Name of financial institution. Account balance. the sale or redemption of property, paid or credited to the account. In the case of depository accounts, total gross amount of interest paid or credited. Intention that the scheme is expanded to include more countries In a letter to the EU Commissioner for Taxation, the G5 countries outlined their wish that other EU Member States also commit to joining the pilot scheme, with a view to promoting a global system of automatic information exchange. They urged for progress on the implementation of article 8 of the Administrative Cooperation and Mutual Assistance Directive of 2011 which provides that: ‘’Each Member State shall, by automatic exchange, communicate to the competent authority of any other Member State, information regarding taxable periods as from 1st January 2014 on the following: income from employment; d i r e c t o r ’s fees; life insurance products not covered by other exchange of information or similar measures; pensions and ownership of and income from immovable property”. From 2017 the list is expected to include dividends, capital gains and royalties. The reporting requirements under both these schemes will leave little room for tax evasion or concealed offshore funds going forward. The UK’s offshore territories have

agreed to join the pilot scheme. It seems that tax havens the world over are voluntarily joining up to these type of schemes. T
here is a new law starting this month covering the transport of goods within Portugal, with a transitional period until the 15th of October to allow companies to adjust their systems. It is important to know what are the main changes with this law and how this may affect you or your business. First of all this law covers all transport of goods, starting and ending in Portugal. This means that if the transport starts outside Portugal, even if it arrives here, the company sending the goods won’t have to comply with this law. The same happens if the transport ends outside Portugal. However even for a foreign company, if the transport of the goods starts and finishes in Portugal, then it has to comply with the law. The law number 198/2012 was designed with three main goals: • To computerize the good transportation. • To have more effective control of the transportation of goods within Portugal. • To fight tax evasion. This law applies to all goods with the exception of personal/domestic use, or goods that are assets or tools of a
New transport law explained!
company. So if you are a sole trader or a company, ensure you have a document proving that the tools within your car are yours and are an asset, in order to prove you are transporting them for your own use and not for sale. Also if you are a domestic consumer, please make sure you bring an invoice for the goods you've just bought, especially building materials, house decoration items, amongst others. Under this law, the tax authorities will now know prior to the start of the transport, which goods the company wants to transport and which clients are receiving these and also the price of these items. Obviously if a company has a turnover under 100k in 2012, it will be exempt from this prior notice. The notice will be done electronically, either via a software system or via telephone. Please note that this is for all companies transporting goods within Portugal, prior to invoicing. If your company sends the goods with the invoice it does not need to make any prior communication. However if you normally send goods to your clients and invoice later, then you need to make sure you comply with this new law as the fines for noncommunication of the transport are
between 150€ and 7.500€. The tax authorities and the GNR are on-line and perpared for this purpose, so if a lorry is stopped on the road it will be possible to check if all the communications were made prior to the start of the transport. Having said this, it is important to remember that no fines will be applied during this initial period and until 15th of October. Last but not least, if a company is delivering goods and at the destiny the delivery is not possible, a new transport document from the destiny to himself will have to be issued. This means that hand-written notes or amendments on the original delivery document won’t be allowed and a new document has to be issued for each new transport. The same applies if a client doesn’t want all the goods or changes the delivery address. Advice I give to all my clients, to make your life easier, whenever possible, send the goods with the invoice. Clients may make changes or want more or less goods, but if all the goods carried are with an invoice everything is much easier. If you need any further clarification about this or other taxes, please contact us.

Forest Fires Be prepared!
I
t's the time of the year when those living in wooded areas dread the thought of a forest fire. Here are some tips to prepare your home in case of a fire, what to do during a fire, and what to do after one! What to do BEFORE a wildland fire: • Create defensible space to separate your home from flammable vegetation and materials (minimum 100ft). • Adhere to all local fire and building codes and weed abatement ordinances. • Keep all trees and shrub limbs trimmed so they do not come into contact with electrical wires or overhang your chimney. (Do not trim around live power lines yourself, call a professional). • Prune all lower branches 8 feet from the ground. • Keep trees adjacent to buildings free of dead or dying branches. • Stack firewood away from your home and other buildings. (Keep clearance around your piles). • Keep roof surfaces clear of pine needles, leaves and debris at all times. • Clean chimneys twice a year. • Keep rain gutters clear of debris at all times. • Use approved fire resistant materials when building, renovating or retrofitting structures. • Install electrical lines underground if
40
possible. • Be sure your house numbers show clearly from the street, both day and night. • Store combustible or flammable materials in approved containers. • Store all important papers in a fireproof container or keep copies at another location. • Make evacuation plans with family members and close neighbours. Include several options with an outside meeting place and contact person. Practice regularly. • Keep battery operated radios and flashlights with additional fresh batteries on hand. What to do DURING a wildland fire: • Turn on a battery operated radio to get latest emergency information. • If you have a ladder, prop it against the house so you and firefighters have access to roof. • If hoses and adequate water are available set them up. Fill buckets with water. • Remove combustible materials from the area surrounding your house. (Lawnchairs, tables, etc.) • Turn a light on in each room for visibility in case of smoke. • Close all doors and windows, but do not lock them. • Open or take down flammable drape and curtains.
• Close all venetian blinds and nonflammable window coverings. • Move upholstered furniture away from windows and sliding glass doors. • Be ready to evacuate all family members and pets when requested to do so. • Turn off air conditioning/air circulation systems. • Detach electrical garage doors. Back in your car and leave the keys in the ignition. • Secure your pets if possible. What to do AFTER a wildland fire: • Check with fire officials before attempting to return to your home. • Use caution when re-entering a burned area - flare-ups can occur. • Check grounds for hot spots smoldering stumps and vegetation. Use your buckets of water. • Check the roof and exterior areas for sparks and embers. • Check the attic and throughout the house for hidden burning sparks and embers. • Continue to check for problem areas for several days. • Contact 112 if any danger is perceived. • If burning outside your home was extensive, watch for soil erosion. • Consult local experts on the best way to restore and replant your land with fire safe landscaping.

Future of Olhanense secured by Italian entrepeneurs & British investment

All the latest local sports news from Chris Wright.
une was a hectic month as the Algarve’s only Premiera Liga club fought to secure its future. Isidoro Sousa was re-elected as President for a further two year term. When he was first elected eight years ago, Olhanense were languishing in the lower regions of the 2nd Division but the appointment of former FC Porto star Jorge Costa as manager resulted in promotion in 2009. In 2012 the team finished eighth under Sergio Conceição but this year financial uncertainty, players not being paid for several months, and three different managers resulted in the team finishing just one place above the drop zone. On the 8th June some 230 socio-members turned up for the General Assembly meeting that started at 10.20pm and went on for some five hours showing just how passionate fans are to have their say. Members gave approval, by a large majority, for the formation of a Limited Sports Company (SAD) with the expectation of foreign investment. The management team

was given the green light to use the Estádio José Arcanjo as collateral in negotiating a bank loan to cover the immediate financial need to pay tax and social security payments in the region of €370,000. 39 year-old Igor Campedelli, who made his money in real estate and tourism, heads the consortium which has taken control of Sporting Clube Olhanense Futebol SAD, holding 80% of the capital estimated to be in the region of €1m. The former president of AC Cesena (Italy) - he held office for 5½ years until last April and took the club through two promotions to the top flight Serie A will be Vice President, but will have a decisive influence on the direction that the club takes. The SAD leadership is in the hands of Isidoro Sousa who will work full-time with the influential Miguel Pinho. Eight years as head of development at FC Porto, Pinho then undertook the same functions at AC Milan under, the then club president, Sílvio Berlusconi. The five man board also includes Aldo Pecini, a renowned Italian soccer scout, who has worked
for Inter Milan, Lazio, Parma and Zenit St Petersburg, and entrepreneur Massimo Michelis who has no known links to the world of football. CHALLENGING TIMES Sixteen players have left the club including those on loan and several players who rescinded their contracts owing to non-payment of salary arrears. The new structure means that all the necessary certificates have been issued after the payment of outstanding wages, social security and tax liabilities. With only six weeks to go before the new season starts on the 18th August the new management and coaching staff will be hard pressed to formulate a new squad. It is anticipated that there will be a strong Italian influence both on the coaching and playing side. LOCAL HERO MOVES ON Veteran keeper Bruno Verissimo is on his way to Cyprus, to represent Apoel Nicosia where he will join, former Olhanense coach, Paulo Sérgio. 37 year-old Bruno was born-and-bred in Tavira where he still lives with his

wife and three young children. Since making his debut in 1995 he has made 273 appearances for Olhanense and was an ever-present in the promotion season of 2008-9. All fans will wish the popular goalkeeper every success in his new venture. OLHÃO TO INDIA VIA ENGLAND That is the fascinating football voyage undertaken by 19 year-old former Olhanense youth player Edinho Junior who signed for Blackburn Rovers eleven months ago. He only featured in two games for the English
Championship side and in March was loaned to Shillong Lajong (India) Once more alone in a strange country, the young adventurer buckled down and, despite eating only rice and pasta for two months, got used to the culture and enjoyed the experience. The Indian adventure resulted in six appearances and two goals helping to ensure that Shillong Lajong maintained their First division status. Edinho Junior has now returned to Blackburn Rovers where he hopes to continue his development.

olfers of all abilities under read putts with between eighty to ninety percent missing below the hole. Dave Pelz (Phil Mickelson´s short game coach) defines ´True Break´ as “the distance from the edge of the hole to the point at which the extended starting line (Aimline) reaches the putt distance”. In other words, the distance from the hole the ball is to be started on for the ball to curve into the hole. Speed influences how much and when the ball will break. A ball hit too firmly will break later than a ball struck hole high. Therefore, it is critical to assess not only the amount of true break needed but also the speed the putt is required to be struck. Why not try when you arrive at the green rather going straight to your ball. Walk on the other side of the hole to your ball to assess the contours of the green. As you walk to your ball being aware of other players lines, walk on the low side of the putt to give you an idea of the how steep the slope is and to give you the opportunity to assess if it is up hill or down hill. Always repair your pitch mark and mark your ball before finally looking from behind your ball to the hole. This will increase the number of putts made, reduce the number of those dreaded three putts and effectively cancel out the time spent tapping in the two or three feet putts. When practising a good drill is ´The String Drill´. Tie a ten foot piece of string to two pencils, place one pencil in the ground and the other at the aim point adjacent to the hole, or behind if it is a straight putt. Strike the ball towards this point ensuring the ball starts down the line of the string before it starts to break towards the hole.
