Welcome...

...to your March issue. Now that we've all given up on our new year resolutions, Easter is here and once again a time to over indulge! I remember as a 15 year old working on the checkout at Sainsbury's, the endless queus of people with their shopping trollies full to the brim with Easter goodies including chocolate... and lots of it! With that in mind, this month we introduce "Docespecados®" (sweet Sins); a small shop in Almancil selling beautiful hand made chocolates. We take a walk around Quinta da Calma, a beautiful retreat, also in Almancil. Back in the East Algarve, we Focus on Monte Rei Golf & Country club's restaurant Vistas, and introduce their chef Jaime Pérez. Regular contributer James Beesley gives the golfers amongst us some great tips on 'bunker play', and this month our Portuguese recipe of the month is Tarte de Natas. Give it a try and let us know how you get on. Have a great month. Editor

The Final and Placement Matches Wednesday 13th March 2013

ohn Norwoods article in Novembers East Algarve Magazine "Car Hire Fuel Con......... Warning" didn't come to our attention until after a 'Golden' moment when we went to pick up our little 'Nugget' at £38 or so we thought. We too arrived to discover our little 'Ingot of Gold' was to cost another 94 euros for a tank full of fuel (which incidentally you could never have got into its tank at pump prices) also there was 900 euros deposit required, because we chose not to have their insurance. After scaring us with ultra inflated prices for repairs to various bits of the car should we happen to damage it, they then tried to put through our credit card for the 900 euros deposit. Oddly the card refused to go through after several attempts, despite having a good unallocated balance on it. (Was this another ploy for money!) Obviously we then had no choice but to take their Insurance at 100 euros which we paid cash for in order to get our car. With damage to the rear quarter of the bodywork and numerous scratches all around it, it is apparent that when customers pay for damage to the vehicle, the vehicle is not repaired with that money. Our final experience with these people was when we arrived minus our paperwork (our fault) and they wanted to charge us 100 euros for that. We shall obviously stick to Silver, Platinum or even Tin in the future but never, never Gold!!!!!!!!!!! Jon Whitfield-Jones

Breast cancer care fundraising evening raises over €1,100!

n Saturday 23rd Feburary there was a fundraising evening to raise money for local resident Esther Martin and ex resident Teresa Redmond who both have places in this years London marathon with UK breast cancer care. Esther was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2011, she was 36 years old and 8 months pregnant at the time with her second son. It was a terrifying ordeal for Esther and her family but after 6 gruelling months of chemotherapy and a bilateral mastectomy she is now in remission with a good prognosis and luckily gave birth to her son who is now a happy, healthy, energetic two year old! Esther has been training now for the past 8 months with personal trainer Nuno and Bruno from Sculptors gym in Almancil as well as running 4 times per week! The evening was organized by Patricia Bova from Mind, Body and Soul who is a good friend and collegue of Esther.

The evening was great fun and a complete success raising a whopping €1110! The evening commenced with a two course meal followed by an auction and raffle with prizes donated from local residents and business owners. Amy Whinescouse provided a wonderful evenings entertainment – a fun night had by all! Esther would like to thank everyone who came to the dinner and in her words – thankyou everyone as your support really does mean everything! Also thankyou to Gay, Ronnie, Peter and all of the staff from Xenias for their hard work and hospitality; the evenings auctioneer Peter Grafham and to Patricia Bova for working so hard to make the evening the success that it was! Health Part one of two articles from Duart Arrais, Fisioclube Fuseta, explaining the painful condition Fibromyalgia.

Fibromyalgia

F

ibromyalgia (FM or FMS) is a medical disorder characterized by chronic widespread pain and allodynia (a heightened and painful response to pressure). Fibromyalgia symptoms are not restricted to pain, leading to the use of the alternative term fibromyalgia syndrome for the condition. Other symptoms include debilitating fatigue, sleep disturbance, and joint stiffness. Some patients also report difficulty with swallowing, bowel and bladder abnormalities, numbness, tingling, and cognitive dysfunction. Fibromyalgia is frequently comorbid with psychiatric conditions such as depression and anxiety and stressrelated disorders such as posttraumatic stress disorder. Not all fibromyalgia patients experience all associated symptoms. Fibromyalgia is estimated to affect 2–4% of the population, with a female to male incidence ratio of approximately 9:1. The term "fibromyalgia" derives from new Latin, fibro-, meaning "fibrous tissues", Greek myo-, "muscle", and Greek algos-, "pain"; thus the term literally means "muscle and connective tissue pain". The brains of fibromyalgia patients show functional and structural differences from those of healthy individuals, but it is unclear whether the brain anomalies cause fibromyalgia symptoms or are the product of an unknown underlying common cause. Some research suggests that these brain anomalies may be the result of childhood stress, or prolonged or severe stress. Historically, fibromyalgia has been considered either a musculoskeletal

8

disease or neuropsychiatric condition. Although there is as yet no cure for fibromyalgia, some treatments have been shown by controlled clinical trials to effectively reduce symptoms, including medications, behavioral interventions, patient education, exercise, therapies. The defining symptoms of fibromyalgia are chronic widespread pain, fatigue, and heightened pain in response to tactile pressure (allodynia). Other symptoms may include tingling of the skin, prolonged muscle spasms, weakness in the limbs, nerve pain, muscle twitching, palpitations, functional bowel disturbances, and chronic sleep disturbances. Many patients experience cognitive dysfunction (known as "fibrofog"), which may be characterized by impaired concentration, problems with short and long-term memory, short-term memory consolidation, impaired speed of performance, inability to multi-task, cognitive overload, and diminished attention span. Fibromyalgia is often associated with anxiety and depressive symptoms. Other symptoms often attributed to fibromyalgia that may possibly be due to a comorbid disorder include myofascial pain syndrome, also referred to as chronic myofascial pain, diffuse nondermatomal paresthesias, functional bowel disturbances and irritable bowel syndrome, genitourinary symptoms and interstitial cystitis, dermatological disorders, headaches, myoclonic twitches, and symptomatic hypoglycemia.

email duarte@fisioclube.net www.fisioclube.net Although fibromyalgia is classified based on the presence of chronic widespread pain, pain may also be localized in areas such as the shoulders, neck, low back, hips, or other areas. Many sufferers also experience varying degrees of myofascial pain and have high rates of comorbid temporomandibular joint disorder. 20–30% of patients with rheumatoid arthritis and systemic lupus erythematosus may also have fibromyalgia. Cause The cause of fibromyalgia is unknown. However, several hypotheses have been developed including "central sensitization". This theory proposes that fibromyalgia patients have a lower threshold for pain because of increased reactivity of pain-sensitive nerve cells in the spinal cord or brain. Stress may be an important precipitating factor in the development of fibromyalgia. Fibromyalgia is frequently comorbid with stress-related disorders such as chronic fatigue syndrome, posttraumatic stress disorder, irritable bowel syndrome and depression. A systematic review found significant association between fibromyalgia and physical and sexual abuse in both childhood and adulthood. Duarte Arrais, Fisioclube

Stop Horsing Around!!

I

f you’re filling up on processed food, then you might be feeling a little empty--and that’s no reference to your belly. It’s not breaking news to anyone that how you fuel up your body has a direct impact on your mental and physical output. But what you may not realize is that what you eat has a real effect on your mental state too. In fact, fueling up too frequently with processed food might set you up for a better chance at struggling with depression later in life. The Survey Says.... This revelation comes as a result of a 2009 British study which revealed that not only can a diet high in processed food make it more likely that an individual will be diagnosed with depression, but it also uncovered that a healthy diet can actually be protective against depression. Chalk up another point for sticking to a healthy diet. The study results were impressive and are enough to motivate even the staunchest chip-dipper to think twice. Partaking in a high volume of processed foods such as meats, chocolate, sweet desserts, fried foods, refined cereals and high-fat dairy made research participants 58 percent more likely to experience depressive symptoms in the future, as opposed to those who filled up mostly on whole foods like fruits, veggies and fish. In fact, those whole-

www.eastalgarvemag.com

foods folks who ate few processed foods had a 26 percent lower risk of experiencing depression as they aged. What to Blame and What to Change! Even while the phrase “processed food” just sounds bad, and health experts give it a nearly unanimous no, it’s not entirely unusual to wonder what, exactly, is so bad about spray cheese and chicken nuggets. The obvious reasons— many processed foods contain much more salt, fat and sugar than we need—are no-brainers. But add to that the fact that they are often filled with refined grains, trans fat and high fructose corn syrup, too— all of which can have a hand in upping your chronic disease risk. Plus, top those downsides with the long list of questionable additives and preservatives, many of which have unknown long-term effects, and you’ll more clearly see why health experts are urging us to put the kibosh on processed food. To illustrate the impact of additives in processed food, let’s take, for example, aspartame, a popular sweetener often found in diet drinks, sugar-free yogurt and low-calorie snacks. The news isn’t good: as reported by the Center for Science in the Public Interest, countless studies point to an increased risk for cancer with lifelong consumption of

Health

Buy your meat from a butcher and make your meals from scratch, then you know exactly what you are eating....

aspartame. Plus, foods sweetened with aspartame—which is 200 times sweeter than sugar—can set you up for a skewed sense of taste. Think of it this way: with the best of intentions, many calorie-conscious folks swill diet drinks to cut calories. Problem is, super-sweetened diet drinks can change your tastes, leading your taste buds to believe that something has to be seriously sweet to taste really good. And that leaves you less than satisfied with a lightly sweet alternative, like a cool glass of iced tea sweetened with, say, a touch of honey. Cutting back on processed food doesn’t just seem like a good idea— it is a good idea; you can cut your risk for chronic disease, obesity and depression. But we’ve become such a fast-living society, that sometimes it’s hard to consider how you’ll pare down the processed foods to which you (and your taste buds) have become accustomed. To get you started, here are a few hints on how to make some healthy changes. Start Small! Don’t blaze into the grocery store on a mission to buy everything you see that looks healthy; you’ll most likely end up with a big bill and a lot of food that goes to waste. Instead, take stock of where you are in your diet journey and make a plan to go from there. If you’re already eating a few servings of fruits and veggies a day,

9

Health think of where you can substitute another serving of produce for something that’s processed. For example, try a couple plums instead of a bag of chips in the afternoon. To swap out diet drinks, try hot tea (or iced tea) in place of a midmorning diet soda. And if you buy treats like ice cream or cookies, try eliminating one of them at a time and fill the space with something that you’ll look forward to—like a glass of fatfree milk with a tablespoon of pure, high-quality dark chocolate syrup made from natural ingredients. Soup It Up! Try to bring back meals that start from whole foods you buy yourself. For instance, are you eating soup from a can that contains carrot bits and pieces of green that might be zucchini? Make your own soup for a change—it will be more filling and less salty than the canned version. Plus, it really doesn’t take long and, in the end, is a better bargain since you’ll have a big batch to eat now and freeze for later when you don’t feel like cooking. A quick internet search can turn up lots of recipes for easy-to-make and mouthwatering soups. Run Fast and Away! Processed food lives in abundance in fast food restaurants, so make it your practice to avoid them at all costs. Most fast foods are swimming with trans fat, high-fructose corn

syrup, salt and refined grains—those bad-for-your-body offenders often found in processed foods. To avoid the lure of an instant-gratification meal when you’re starving, have a supply of anti-spoil foods like muisli bars, nuts and dry fruit that can take the edge off your hunger until you can find better choices. Think of Grandma! If you’re confused about what to buy, think about the foods the folks before you ate. Did your great grandparents eat butter-flavored microwave popcorn and triplethreat cheese crackers for snack? Probably not; it’s more likely that they ate stove-top popcorn popped with a little oil and crackers with slices of real cheese—both excellent choices that contain simple ingredients that you can likely pronounce. Modern times may have brought a new crop of foods that would baffle your great grandparents, but sometimes old standards make the best standbys. Limiting the processed foods you eat won’t happen overnight—but you can make a difference in your taste for those foods as well as improve the odds for a better longterm health outcome with every chip, sweet roll and dehydrated noodle brick you dump from your diet. And that’s a prospect that can definitely make you feel whole Gareth Bullock The Bowen Technique

uring the 1914 war, a few days before Christmas near Armentières, France, some Germans suggested a brief, local cease-fire, and sweetened the deal with a chocolate cake! Although this obsession with chocolate could be cultural, there are other factors to consider: chocolate contains many things which are beneficial to our health. Although women seem to crave it more than men I think it is safe to say that most

14

people love it, whether they feel it is beneficial or not! Chocolate contains antioxidants which help clear the body of impurities, lower blood pressure and improve blood flow to the brain and heart. Theobromine and caffeine are compounds that provide a mental boost, and phenylethylamine, or PEA, which stimulates the nervous system, increases blood pressure and heart rate, and is suspected to produce similar feelings experienced when a person is "in love."

"DocespecadosÂŽ" is the tasty result of an idea conceived a long time ago by Nuno Machuqueiro and his wife, Veronica Pisco. Their intention was to create something unique and somewhat more appealing than just a regular confectioners shop. By combining chocolate with traditional regional produce like figs, almonds, oranges, carobs, honey and traditional liqueurs; they were able to offer their clients a mix of tradition and originality. Such as fig stars, caramelised orange peel, Madronha

soaked figs and fig and carob paste enveloped in tasty chocolate, as well as the more traditional style chocolates, truffles, pralines, chocolate bars, and macaroons. But their creativity and innovation did not stop there and they went on to confection a vast range of products including chocolate liquors, chocolate preserve and even chocolate flavour teas! Initially I thought this a little over the top but Nuno explained that these teas have a slight subtle chocolate aroma, unlike chocolate milk, and the taste is gentle and suave. Personalizing products is one of their specialities whether it is logotypes for businesses or something special for that special somebody. These come in the form of edible postcards! Photographs, images, texts or poems printed in edible chocolate ink on an edible chocolate surface. Because all the products are confectioned on the premises Nuno can do things that no other ‘conventional’ shops can, such as, place an object like an engagement ring or a necklace inside a hollow chocolate heart or box and seal it up again to make an original idea for popping the question or just an unusual way of giving a simple gift. At "Docespecados®" chocolate comes in all shapes and forms and the shelves are a mix of fantasy and fun, from the tasty chocolate liqueurs to the colourful swirly lollypops. Even a chess set made entirely out of chocolate! An ideal gift for any Chess geek, you can actually eat your opponent’s pieces as you take them! And for the keen golfers out there chocolate golf balls are a must, but be sure not to get them mixed up! With the use of moulds most things can be made, even tools! Yes screw drivers and monkey wrenches! Easter is the most celebrated chocolate eating feast of the year, and a very busy month for Nuno. Chocolate eggs can also be personalised and filled with an assortment of chocolates, truffles and pralines or anything else you desire! "Docespecados®" have been open since 2009 and you can find them on the Av 5 de Outubro nº137, Almancil. Tel: 289 398 233

uinta da Calma is the base for the School of Life, a Center for Integral Yoga and holistic healing, for teaching and learning and for spiritual growth, open to and embracing the essence of all traditions and teachings, but attached to none: “The Truth is One, the Paths are Many.” It was in 1980 that Al and Sylta Kalmbach discovered the site that was to become the first centre of its kind in the Algarve. Spread over a hilltop outside the then village of Almancil, and covered in native Umbrella Pine trees, it was obvious even then that it had that special something. Initially with the idea of a jojoba plantation, it was here that Al and Sylta made their home, and from the humble beginnings of healthy holidays and the Friday lunches that spilled out from Sylta’s kitchen to the terrace and beyond, the seeds for Quinta da Calma were sown. Alongside Sylta in those early days was Marion Rieber, a dedicated therapist and teacher of Tai Chi, and her husband Rick, who created the organic garden and made it into his own personal kingdom. As it expanded and word spread, more and more people came to the centre. Many inspirational teachers from around the world have shared their knowledge, wisdom, faith and insights with groups at Quinta da Calma, and continue to do so to this day. Marion and Rick Rieber have both passed over now, as has Al Kalmbach, but original founder Sylta still steers a steady course into the

future, with a new generation who have been guided and inspired by her leadership and who are preparing for whatever the future may hold. And not forgetting her ever faithful dog Sammy who is also a major parte of the centre. Sylta told us that the Quinta is a Centre for integrative healing, learning and spiritual growth. It was founded on a love for Nature, natural foods and natural healing, and on the firm belief that it is the birthright of every individual to enjoy health and well-being at every level, for body, mind and spirit. The original philosophy has not changed, but matured and grown, and still remains at the forefront of new developments and discoveries

in healing, therapies and even in the wider realms where spirituality meets science. It is within that loving compassionate structure that Quinta da Calma continues today. Offering an extensive range of treatments and therapies aimed at bringing body, mind and spirit back to a place of balance, harmony and peace. There are courses and workshops for those keen to learn more, expand their understanding and to achieve professional, recognised qualifications. Ongoing regular classes and activities include yoga, Tai chi, Pilates, Meditation and various types of spiritual and selfdevelopment work. There are also a wide range of treatments and

therapies, all with fully-qualified, experienced therapists, many of whom speak two languages if not more. Treatments range from Reiki to Active Oxygen Capsule sessions! There are also regular AA meetings. Quinta da Calma is set in 11 acres of beautiful natural surroundings. The residential accommodation and working spaces are spread out beneath the pine trees, to enhance the sense of peace, space and relaxation. If you are looking to find peace and quiet, recharge your batteries and just enjoy living, then this is the place for you. pened in June 2008, The Vistas restaurant offers a complete gourmet experience, providing the ultimate in gastronomic delights with a unique ambiance and uncompromising level of service. The celebrated and award-winning chef Jaime Pérez brings his sublime culinary talents to the resort's signature restaurant. Jaime will remain true to his creed that "only the best is good enough" while emphasizing the freshest local ingredients focused on Mediterranean cuisine. Experience Chef Pérez's grand tasting menu paired with fine wines while dining in the opulent, high vaulted ceiling showpiece restaurant with stunning views out across the fairways and lake to the Atlantic Ocean. Jaime Perez, a protégé of the often acclaimed "most influential chef in the world", Ferrán Adrià, Perez became a leading chef in Adrià´s renowned 3-Michelin star "El Bulli" restaurant. Also, during his career Jaime has worked in collaboration with other giants in the business, such as Carlos Abellan, Sergi Arola, Pedro Subjiana and

Oriol Balaguer, all of whom have influenced his style of cooking and left their mark in different ways. These chefs have acquired global recognition as ground-breaking pioneers of the culinary world. Before arriving at Monte Rei, Perez was Executive Head Chef at the one of Spain's most recognized and luxurious hotels, The Ritz Carlton Arts Hotel in Barcelona. There he developed his distinctive brand and introduced new Mediterranean dishes achieving a successful combination of Catalonian, Andalusian and Basque cuisine based on fresh ingredients combined to respect the original flavours, where spices are used to enhance the taste and not to hide it. Chef Perez manages the overall operation of the restaurants, including staff and service, year-round. He incorporates elements of Spain's exciting culinary movement; blending innovative techniques with regional products and history will produce dishes that are as much a work of art as they are designed to suit the most discerning palates.

here are many people who dream of building their own perfect home. Last week a client who is interested in purchasing a plot of land asked us about the average cost of construction per square meter, a question that was asked frequently before the crisis started. Few people are brave enough to construct their own home. In Portugal this can officially only be done in cooperation with a licensed builder. At the moment there are various resale properties on the market ready to move into without delay, which are being sold below replacement value. From a pure investment point of view, purchasing an existing home in the current economic climate can make more sense than starting from scratch. Of course there are other considerations too, such as your preference for a location and the design and lay out of a property. Being the owner of a brand new property has the advantage of having a 5 year warranty on the construction and 2 years warranty on the equipment. However, building a property is not for everyone and it can cause a lot of stress. To build or not to build, that is the question. First, there is no such thing as an average price per square meter to build a house. It depends on many variables, such as the quality of construction materials and specifications, the location and the soil. Imagine you want to build a house on a location with rocks or inclination of the land. The rocks need to be removed and maybe you need to make an excavation first before the foundation is put in

place. This has an effect on costs. A quotation from a builder includes various budgets, e.g. a budget for a kitchen, floor and wall tiles. If you decide for more expensive items, you will need to settle the balance with the builder. Also, bathroom fittings and fixtures are not included. You should plan/budget for an additional 5 to 8% of the construction costs for extras. As a guideline, be prepared to pay Euro 700 – 750 per square meter excluding VAT for good quality construction. This price indication easily moves up to 2500 – 4000 in the Quinta do Lago and Vale de Lobo area in the central Algarve. With the construction sector in the doldrums, it is likely you can negotiate a better price with builders. Having said this, if you drive a hard bargain you may end up with a property of lower quality. For instance, not all double glazing is of the same quality. The same is true for electric under floor heating where a cheaper option has a shorter life. When comparing quotes from builders, you should never base your judgement on price alone. In our experience builders with a quote below average are less well organised versus others. Depending on your requirements, this may not necessarily be a problem. There are other expenses such as the architect, building license and the connection of the utilities. In case there is no mains water connection

Depending on how deep you need to drill this can easily add another Euro 10.000 to your expenses, including the water pump, equipment and electric cables. Note that this is not a comprehensive cost overview as the space on this page is limited. If your dream to build a new property doesn’t scare you, then go for it.

Emma Bullock from Frontera furnishings shares her top tips on furniture care.

A

re you in a constant battle to protect your furniture from friends, renters, pets, children, and the occasional misdirected glass of red wine!? Think of investing in pieces that defy abuse — solidly built furniture that can withstand the occasional overly enthusiastic renter, finishes that are easy to wipe down, cushions with covers that can be removed for washing. Fabric Products In order to maintain the appearance and condition of your fabric, remember these tips: • Regularly vacuum your furniture to remove dust, dirt and debris. • Rotate & plump loose cushions to maintain their appearance and avoid uneven wear. • Do not allow body/hair grease and oil to build up. • Never use detergents or abrasive cleaners. • Try not to place your furniture near heat sources or in direct sunlight, this could cause fading. • If you accidently spill something on your furniture, wipe excess away (do not rub) with a slightly dampened sponge immediately. When purchasing your furniture (or after), it is possible to treat your fabric furniture with a protector. At Furniture Frontera we use a antistain protector that is guaranteed for 10 years (private residences). Wood Furniture Wood continues to exchange moisture with the air as it responds to climatic changes in your home. It responds to extremely dry air by losing moisture and shrinking a bit. This will correct itself as the relative humidity rises and the wood absorbs enough moisture to expand slightly. Seasonal wood movement

30

on solid wood products is normal and not considered a warranty issue. Use a humidifier in winter and an air conditioner in summer for best results. Avoid placing fine wood furniture near heating or air-conditioning outlets, and do not expose indoor furniture to continuous direct sunlight. Dusting Dust is abrasive, so infrequent or improper dusting can create a worn, dull surface over time. Dust will also accumulate in joints, cracks and grooves and become hard to remove. Use a clean, soft, washable, lint-free cloth, such as an old white cotton T-shirt or cotton baby nappy. Moisten the cloth slightly by sprinkling with a few drops of water to help dust adhere to it. This also reduces friction and is less likely to create scratches. Do not let any moisture remain on the wood surface. If you see traces of water after you wipe, your cloth is too damp. Wipe using gentle strokes while following the direction of the grain. Turn or fold the cloth as soon as dirt is visible on any section. When dusting, always pick up and replace your accessories

gently, do not slide. Leather Maintenance Think about using a protectant, this is usually in a form of spray or oil. You can apply this to your leather to ensure protection against the moisture. Heat is one of the dangerous factors that may harm your leather sofa. Place your leather sofa at least two feet away from your fire place or the radiator. Also avoid direct sun light. If you keep your leather sofa open to extreme heat it will get faded over time. It is not only about the heat that you have to worry about but also the cold. Do not place your leather sofa right under your air conditioner, if you do it will start to crack As with fabric sofas you can apply a anti-stain protector to increase its longevity. Follow these easy rules to ensure you can enjoy your furniture for years to come.

am sure all of you must have tried this delicious Portuguese dessert at some point. Although it might look like a cheesecake it is quite different and very sweet. This recipe was passed onto me from my Portuguese mother-in-law. Ingredients: • 8 folhas de Gelatina (you buy them in sheets) • 3 packs of cream (the small ones, preferably Mimosa) • 1 can of Condensed milk (350g) • 1 Pack of Maria biscuits

The best way I find to dissolve the gelatine is in a “Banho-Maria”. Cut up the sheets and place them in a little water in a heat resistant container. Place the container in a small pan with hot water. Some prefer to dissolve the gelatine in cold water; I can never do this very successfully. It has to be very well dissolved. Next, beat the three packs of cream with an electric mixer until the mixture forms stiff peaks then mix in the condensed milk. Take the gelatine and stir it well to make sure there are no lumps

and blend it into the rest of the ingredients, as quickly as possible The Maria biscuits can be grated or crumbed in an electric blender. Use about 2/3 of the packet. Place the crumbs in the base of a 14 inch cake tin or quiche dish. Pour the liquid carefully over the biscuit crumbs. You can also put more crumbs on top. Place in the fridge for at least two hours and to serve you can turn it out onto a large plate. This dessert can be frozen and is virtually effortless to make. Enjoy!

Top tips for

Spring lawn care Part two of our top tips to have the perfect lawn.

T

his section gives you an insight into you machinery needs and some basic tips for keeping your lawn mower running for the summer Besides proper spring grass care, there's more you need to do to get ready for a summer filled with lawn mowing. Don't neglect preparations concerning the lawn mower itself. No other power equipment is as intimately associated with and essential to landscaping as is the lawn mower. You need to have a lawn mower that will consistently get the job done without any hassles throughout the lawn mowing season. And you should also know how to use the lawn mower to your best advantage. Consequently, the final three of my ten tips focus on caring for, selecting and using lawn mowers. Tip #8: Tuning Up Existing Lawn Mowers Mowing the lawn all summer can be tiring enough, right? Why make it more difficult on yourself by putting up with a lawn mower that doesn't start up immediately? When a lawn mower is stubborn about starting up, that can be a sign that it needs a tune up. Although it’s often possible to get by without one, it is recommended that you have a lawn mower tuned up each year. Don't put it off till summer or pay someone else to do it. Learn how to tune up a lawn mower yourself using your manufacturer’s handbook or follow these simple steps below. How to Clean your Lawnmower: Pull and clean the Spark Plug Most of the time simply cleaning the spark plug will solve your lawnmower woes. To do this, disconnect the wire attached to the end of the spark plug. Then using a wrench or a Ratchet/Socket, remove the spark plug. If the spark plug is black or wet

34

looking, you have probably found your problem on why the lawnmower is not starting. Using fine grit sandpaper, sand the top of the spark plug down to bare metal. Make sure you sand all around the edges of the piece of metal (tab) that sits just above the electrode. Make sure that there is a gap between the metal tab and the electrode. If you still have the lawnmower manual and a feeler gauge you can adjust the gap to the specifications. However, if there is a small gap it is probably sufficient for the spark plug to operate correctly. Make sure the spark plug is free of dust and dry. Then screw it back into the cylinder and connect back the wire to the end of the spark plug. Then try starting the lawn mower. Check for Oil Ensure there is oil in the lawnmower and that it is at the proper level. Check for Fuel Make sure there is gas in the lawn mower. If you have old gas in the lawnmower and did not put in a fuel stabilizer at the end of the season, replace the gas. If you had drained the gas tank at the end of the previous season, then fill the tank at least half full with new gas. Check the Fuel Line Like many of us, at the end of the previous lawn mowing season we turn off the fuel line switch. Make sure it is in the on position. If you have done all of the above and the engine will not fire, then check to see if the fuel is getting to the carburettor. Temporarily disconnect the fuel hose from the carburettor and see if gas pours out. If so reconnect the hose. If not, then check the fuel line. It may be gummed up or the fuel filter is clogged. Check the Air Filter

Make sure the Air Filter is clean. If it is dirty and oily then replace it. If it just dirty shake it and knock out some of the dust. This may solve your problem; however I would still recommend replacing it. Clean the Carburettor First turn off the fuel line. Disassembling and cleaning the carburettor is not as bad as you may think. Usually there is a nut on the underside of the carburettor. Remove this and pull the bottom portion of the carburettor off. Clean the inside of this lower portion of the carburettor and then make sure the float valve moves up and down freely. The float valve is a plastic object about 3cm in diameter that hangs down when you remove the lower portion of the carburettor. Reconnect the lower portion of the carburettor and turn on the fuel line again. Try restarting the lawnmower. If it still does not work after performing all of these procedures, then take it to a repair shop. However, from personal experience these procedures usually solve the problem. Sharpen the Blade Finally, make sure you sharpen the blade. This will ensure you minimize the torque on the engine while cutting the grass. Not to mention, your lawn will get a more even cut. Tip #9: Buying a New Lawn Mower Or perhaps you're fed up with your old lawn mower? Time for a change? The best resources for consumers that will help you decide on which type of lawn mower is best for you can be found on the internet or visiting a good horticultural supplier. I have found that it pays to invest money in garden machinery and the lawn mower is one of your most important machinery purchases.

Tip #10: Reviewing Lawn Mowing Strategies "What's there to know about lawn mowing?" perhaps you ask. "You just push the lawn mower and it cuts the grass, right?" At the most basic level, Yes. And if lawn mowing is merely a mindless chore that you perform to satisfy other people (and you really don't care much about the health of your lawn), then you needn't know any more about it. However, if you do care about the health of your lawn, there's a bit more to lawn mowing than just keeping your grass short enough to prevent the neighborhood from thinking your house has been abandoned! Spring is a good time to learn lawn mowing strategies -- before it becomes so hot outside that it's hard to think! Here’s a few tips to get you on your way. Question: Is There a Right Time and Wrong Time to Mow the Lawn? Answer: Yes. You should not mow the lawn when the grass is wet (under which conditions disease can be introduced, plus you incur the risk of slipping and getting injured), for example. So the period just after a rainstorm would be a wrong time to mow, as would a time (early morning) when the grass is still covered with

www.eastalgarvemag.com

Luz de Tavira

dew. During the late morning (after the dew has evaporated) of a dry day, however, is an example of a right time to mow the lawn. But deciding on when to cut the grass goes beyond waiting for dry conditions. Other factors go into picking a right time to mow the lawn, including personal factors. What if you're not a morning person, for instance? That's certainly a consideration. There are also further objective factors that we have yet to take into account. For example, mowing when the sun is pounding down on your grass, as it would during the afternoon of a hot summer's day, puts a lot of stress on the lawn. Cutting grass in the evening, instead, would put less stress on it. On the other hand, you don't want to cut the grass too late in the day, after darkness starts to fall, as this is a period of reduced visibility (which increases the chances for a mowing mishap). As you can see, a lot of "juggling" will likely enter into your decision-making process. All else being equal, the early evening of a dry day may be the right time for mowing lawns if you're the type of person who really doesn't stir about very much until well after the day is half over (and yes, it takes one to

To Tavira Look out for the Yellow flags

know one). In conclusion, deciding on when to mow the lawn entails balancing personal factors with the cold, hard facts regarding safety and what's best for the health of your grass. Question: Is there a right and a wrong way to mow lawns? Answer: Yes. For example, you should alternate the direction in which you mow the lawn each mowing session. By mowing the wrong way (in this regard), your grass will "get into a rut" (literally). That is, if your mower wheels pass over the same area in the same direction each time you mow, they'll form ruts over time. Mowing the lawn the right way and switching mowing patterns also wisely avoids having the mower blade beating at the grass in the same direction every session, which discourages your grass from standing up straight (it's always being pressured to lean in one particular direction). These, aswell as last month tips, are just a few thoughts for you to consider when dealing with your lawn and as I have already mentioned if you only choose to do a few of these tips for a greener lawn you will certainly see the benefits.

UK Inheritance Tax Bills To Rise By Bill Blevins, Financial Correspondent, Blevins Franks

K inheritance tax bills could rise, and more families dragged into the inheritance tax net. We have warned for some time that increasing longevity will lead to higher taxes, and the UK government has now taken the step to increase revenue as part of its reform of the cost of social care for the elderly. The inheritance tax nil rate band – the amount of your estate your heirs can inherit tax free – will be frozen for several more years. This is effectively a tax rise in real terms. If you are a British domicile, UK inheritance tax is charged on your worldwide estate at the time of your death, plus any assets you gave away as gifts over the last seven years. Since it is based on domicile rather than residence, British expatriates with estates above the threshold continue to be liable for this tax, unless they have successfully adopted a domicile of choice elsewhere. UK assets are always liable regardless of domicile. Changing your domicile is hard, but not impossible if you intend to live

www.eastalgarvemag.com

in Portugal permanently and cut ties with the UK. You need professional guidance because getting it wrong could be very costly for your heirs. The current nil rate band is £325,000 per individual, or £650,000 for spouses and civil partners. The tax rate is then a fixed 40%. This threshold used to increase each year with inflation, but it has been frozen since April 2009 as part of austerity measures. The 2012 budget confirmed there would be no change until at least April 2015, however December’s Autumn Statement included an announcement that the threshold would increase by 1%, rounded up to £329,000, from 2015. Just a couple of months later, however, this has been overturned. The threshold will now remain frozen until at least 2019 as part of government plans for funding care for the elderly. This will bring an extra 5,000 estates into the inheritance tax net, earning the Treasury an extra £1 billion tax revenues each year. If the threshold increased with inflation, it would reach £420,000 by 2019.

Families could therefore lose an extra £95,000 from their inherited estates. Longevity will continue to be a headache for governments, here in Portugal as well as in the UK. It will remain an issue long after the economic crisis is behind us. This means that the government may still have to increase tax revenue even when the need for austerity measures is over. For advice on tax planning for today and the future, on your estate as well as on your savings and investments, seek expert advice from Blevins Franks which has decades of experience advising British expatriates on effective tax mitigation and wealth management strategies. The tax rates, scope and relief may change. Any statements concerning taxation are based upon our understanding of current taxation laws and practices which are subject to change. Tax information has been summarised; an individual should take personalised advice. salary offered. This incentive lasts for a maximum of 18 months, and it aims to fight the high unemployment rate within the young Portuguese. The reimbursement of the TSU amount can be 100% if the contract is unlimited or up to 75% if the contract is with a fixed term. In any of these cases, the monthly amount of the reimbursement cannot exceed 175€, which takes it to a total of 3,150€ over 18 months. If you are planning in recruiting new staff and want to find out more about this, and other incentives, contact us for a friendly chat.

Procedures to obtain incentives at a glance: • Employer must register their offer at the official employment portal (www. netemprego.pt). At this point they may identify the person that they envisage recruiting. • The offer is validated, the unemployment of the candidate is verified, and or the unemployment centre sends candidates that meet the job criteria. • The company needs to apply for this incentive within 5 working days from the signature of the employment contract. • The approval should be granted within 15 working days after the delivery of the application.

Rising damp - an update

The ongoing protection from rising damp as provided by the installation of a system from Drymat continues to be enjoyed by their customers.

M

r Taug and Mrs Lindberg in Sao Bras de Alportel had a Drymat system installed during the springtime of 2012. This followed on from them seeing for themselves the dramatic results of the drying capabilities of the unit when visiting the home of a friend. During the initial free survey visit the damaging effects of the rising damp were plain to see with damage to both interior and exterior walls very evident and a seriously musty damp smell present in the home, the unit was installed, adjusted and the drying process commenced to work. Eleven months later during a routine control measurement visit to their home they commented: “We think it is working very well already because the mouldy smells we had before are nearly completely

40

gone” The measurements of the moisture content of the affected walls were again taken and the results showed that the levels of water content in the masonry had dropped from the initial values of 340 litres per m³ to 144 litres per m³ in one wall and from 430 litres per m³ to 162 litres per m³ in another, corresponding to reductions of 57.6% and 62.3% respectively. The house is now well on it’s way to being a nice dry and comfortable environment in which to live and because energy is not now being used to evaporate the water from the surface of the walls creating a damp air problem their energy bills are reducing too! Olhanense stun Porto but continue to struggle

T

All the latest local sports news from Chris Wright.

he Algarve’s only Premier Liga team had a difficult month with a 1-0 home defeat against V.Setúbal and a comprehensive 3-1 reversal when they travelled to Madeira to play Nacional. Against Académica the ‘rubro-negros’ were missing eleven squad members through injury and the Africa Cup of Nations and despite dominating the game, missed a string of golden opportunities with Targino, Rui Duarte and Djalmir being the main culprits. The one ray of sunshine on a dark horizon was the remarkable result away to league leaders FC Porto who were hoping to record their thirteenth consecutive home win when the Algarveans limped into town. Once again Olhanense had patched together a side that was still without Abdi, Ivanildo, Yontcha, Fernando Alexandre and Djaniny. Babanco and David Silva made a welcome return from the Africa Cup of Nations and new signing Lucas Souza was on the bench. After a succession of early corners for Porto, a rapid counter-attack from

42

Olhanense stunned the crowd into silence when wide man Tiago Targino raced clear and rifled the ball beyond Helton from a narrowing angle. Porto also reckoned without a top class display from Rafael Bracali, on loan at Olhanense from Porto. The Brazilian showed a near-total command of his penalty area and also produced a magnificent one-handed save to deny Jackson Martínez on forty minutes. Porto’s second-half equaliser resulted but in a very fortuitous fashion. Moutinho’s corner - replays show that as keeper Bracali went for the cross he was impeded by Jackson Martínez - bounced off Varela, then the post, and finally into Jackson Martínez’s path and Porto were level. When Jander was harshly adjudged to have deliberately blocked Danilo’s cross with his arm it looked as if the Dragons would take all three points but the normally lethal Jackson Martinez blasted the resulting spotkick over the bar. Towards the end Bracali pulled off yet another acrobatic double save to deny Porto and Olhanense had more than earned a

share of the points. This was the first time Porto had failed to win a league game at home for eleven months and it was only the second goal conceded at home all season. HISTORY REPEATS ITSELF 50 YEARS ON In 1963 Olhanense travelled to Lisbon to take on, the then, league leaders Benfica with their 100% record and star studied team. The Benfica team included Coluna, António Simões, José Augusto, José Torres and the great Eusébio. Olhanense defied the odds on that occasion and returned to the Algarve with a memorable point after a 1-1 draw. It was in that game that a young Olhanense player, Luciano, was spotted by Benfica. A year later he signed for the Eagles but was to lose his life in a tragic accident in December 1966 when he was electrocuted in the club’s hydromassage pool. The 1960s were the best period of the club's history, in which Benfica won eight Portuguese Championships, three Portuguese Cups and two European Club Champions Cup. WAGES IN ARREARS Olhanense President, Isidoro Sousa, has confirmed that players wages are up to three months in arrears. “We

CHAMPAGNE MOMENT

W

hen diehard Birmingham City supporter Mark Oliver decided to fly his new bride Katie to the Algarve to celebrate his 50th birthday little did he realise the surprise that was in store for him. Mark takes up the story, “As it was my birthday on the day of Olhanense’s game against Setubal we took a bottle of champagne with us. We happened to meet the Expat Supporters Group before the game who ‘confiscated’ the bottle! Then at half-time we were whisked up to the President’s Box where the champagne was uncorked and Isidoro Sousa toasted our health. I can never imagine this happening in England. We would like to thank everyone at Olhanense for making our day very, very special.”.

Bunker play

This month's tip from resident professional at Monte Rei Golf and Country Club, James Beesley.

I

n my time at Monte Rei I have seen many players take three or four shots in a bunker using the wrong club and poor technique with the eventual result of the ball being picked up or just thrown onto the green. Bunkers are a hazard and should be avoided where possible; however it is inevitable that from time to time your ball will come to rest in a trap. This tip will help you play bunker shots with confidence and without fear! Always use a sand iron, this club is built differently than all others in your set and has a bounce angle to help you get out of the sand. The correct way to play out of bunkers is to set up and aim your body, stance and shoulders left of the flagstick about two or three yards. The clubface should be open to your aim and pointing slightly to the right of the flagstick. Position the ball forward in your stance, in line with the inside of your left heel, this will ensure the sand is struck before the ball. Swing back to a position where your lead arm is parallel to the ground and the club shaft is pointing towards the sky; accelerate through to a full finish striking the sand aggressively 1 inch before the ball. Try to imagine the ball lying on a ten euro note and being removed without damaging the note! For individual, group or playing lessons call +351 281 950 950 or email at golf@monterei. com Lessons include all equipment hire, golf balls & water.
