Algarve Bike Challenge 2014.

fter the success and charm that the prologue provided both participants and spectators, it was impossible not to repeat it in 2014! Nothing better than the mystique and charm of the historical centre of Tavira to welcome participants to the Algarve Bike Challenge. On the 28th to 30th of March, right in the city centre overlooking the River Gilao a flagship site of Tavira, participants may proceed to the “check-in” to start on the evening at 8:00pm a memorable bike weekend! The prologue about 3km unfold-to, once again, all over the inner city almost entirely on asphalt and in parallel with the narrow tunnels and steps from the historical centre. In order to increase the spectacle and adrenaline, the route has slightly changed and the direction reversed.

2013: record-breaking year for Algarve tourism

t was all good news for the tourism sector in the Algarve last year, as the region registered more sleepovers, more guests, more revenue and profit and even more golf rounds than it had the previous year. Starting off the list of positives, the region reached a record-high profit sum – €609 million – representing a 4.1% increase compared to the year before, the regional tourism board Turismo do Algarve has announced. No other area or region in the country did better. It is no surprise then that the tourism board considered 2013 a “very positive year” and that the Algarve was the main touristic destination in Portugal, accounting for 35.5% of sleepovers in Portugal (14.8 million), ahead of Lisbon and Madeira, according to a document named “Destaque Actividade Turística” released by the National Statistics Institute (INE). The total number of registered guests in tourism accommodation was over 3.1 million – a 3.6% increase compared to 2012, mostly due to

the region’s ability to overcome the smaller fraction of Portuguese guests (-2.9%) by attracting more foreign guests (5.5%). But the region also saw growth in other tourism-related sectors. Faro Airport registered positive results as well, with nearly six million passengers in 2013, representing a 5.6% rise compared to the previous year, according to data from the ANA airport authority. And golf showed extremely positive results as well as data from Algarve Golf shows. Golf rounds in the Algarve once again reached the one million mark last year, which has not occurred since 2009, the tourism board stressed. All in all, the region registered a tendency for growth and development in virtually all relevant areas of the tourism sector. President of the regional tourism board, Desidério Silva, said in January that he is confident the upward trend will continue and that 2014 will be even better.

avira is to become one of only three councils where most licensing operations can be conducted entirely online, Mayor Jorge Botelho said last night. Alongside Abrantes and Águeda, the eastern Algarve city will see its residents being able to request paperwork such as for public advertising or the leasing of public spaces and esplanades via the internet, without ever needing to enter the City Hall.

Coastal facelift in Tavira

T

he area between Santa Lúzia and Pedras d’El Rei in Tavira is scheduled for a €637,000 coastal makeover, with works scheduled to start during the second half of 2014. Incorporated into the Polis Litoral Ria Formosa programme, the idea, says Tavira council, is to make the area easier to travel through and a lot more 'leisure-friendly'. The project should be completed within seven months.

Amazing Aloe Vera Gareth Bullock tells us why this is such an amazing plant.

A

loe Vera is really quite an incredible plant. It is a succulent plant and part of the lily family (Liliaceae), the same family that garlic and onions belong to. Different parts of the plant are used for different effects on the body and Aloe Vera has both internal and external applications. Aloe Vera contains over 200 active components including vitamins, minerals, amino acids, enzymes, polysaccharide, and fatty acids- no wonder it’s used for such a wide range of remedies. The bulk of the Aloe Vera leaf is filled with a clear gel-like substance, which is approximately 99% water. Here is a list of the Top 6 Benefits and Medicinal Uses for Aloe Vera: Aloe Vera Is High in Vitamins & Minerals: Aloe Vera contains many vitamins including A, C, E, folic acid, choline, B1, B2, B3 (niacin), B6. Aloe Vera is also one of the few plants that contains vitamin B12. Some of the 20 minerals found in Aloe Vera include: calcium, magnesium, zinc, chromium, selenium, sodium, iron, potassium, copper, manganese. Aloe Vera is High in Amino Acids & Fatty Acids Amino acids are the building blocks of protein. There

1 2

are about 22 amino acids that are necessary for the human body and it is said that 8 of these are essential. Estimates of the amino acids found in aloe range from 18-20 amino acids, with all 8 essential amino acids. Aloe Vera also includes quite an impressive range of fatty acids. Aloe contains three plant sterols, which are important fatty acids- HCL cholesterol (which lowers fats in the blood), campesterol, and B-sitosterol. All are helpful in reducing symptoms of allergies and acid indigestion. Other fatty acids include linoleic, linolenic, myristic, caprylic, oleic, palmitic, and stearic. Aloe Vera is an Adaptogen Aloe Vera is a well-known adaptogen. An adaptogen is something that boosts the body’s natural ability to adapt to external changes and resist illness. It is thought that aloe’s power as an adaptogen balances the body’s system, stimulating the defence and adaptive mechanisms of the body. This allows you an increased ability to cope with stress (physical, emotional and environmental stress like pollution) Aloe Helps with Digestion Poor digestion is related to many diseases. A properly functioning digestive tract is one of the keys and foundations of health. Aloe is known to soothe and

cleanse the digestive tract and help improve digestion. The interesting thing about taking aloe internally is that, because it is an adaptogen, it helps with either constipation or diarrhoea, helping to regulate your elimination cycles in whatever way you need. It’s been a great remedy for people with problems such as irritable bowel syndrome as well as acid reflux. Aloe also helps to decrease the amount of unfriendly bacteria and in our gut keeping your healthy intestinal flora in balance. Aloe is also a vermifuge, which means it helps to rid the body of intestinal worms. Aloe Helps in Detoxification Aloe Vera is a gelatinous plant food, just like seaweeds and chia. The main benefit to consuming gelatinous plant foods in your diet is that these gels move through the intestinal tract absorbing toxins along the way and get eliminated through the colon. This will help the proper elimination of waste from your body and help the detoxification of your body. Aloe Alkalizes the Body Disease cannot manifest in an alkaline environment. Most people are living and subsisting on mostly acidic foods. For great health, remember the 80/20 rule – 80% alkaline forming foods and 20% acidic. Aloe vera is an alkaline forming food. It alkalises the body, helping to balance overly acidic dietary habits Gareth Bullock the bowen technique 912 540 071

Why healthy teeth are so important

Oral health is an important factor in our overall wellbeing. Here are some tips from We smile Dental Clinic.

T

he mouth often functions as an “early warning” system for some diseases. Increased research points to the connection between chronic oral infection and other chronic diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis and obesity That’s why is very important to have a good oral health habits. There are five basic steps to caring for teeth and gums: Brushing. Brush your teeth at least twice a day, for three minutes each time. It´s best to do one of these times before going to bed, because your mouth does not have the same salivary protection, when you are sleeping, as it does during the day. If you can, brush after lunch as well. Flossing. Floss your teeth daily and after any food that will stick in your teeth. This cleans the other

1

2

sides of your teeth that you couldn’t reach with your toothbrush. Use a tongue scraper to remove the plaque on your tongue, which will refresh your breath and slow down the accumulation of plaque on your teeth. Rinsing. Use a fluoride mouth wash that will help to strengthen tooth enamel. Eating Right. Choose your foods wisely, avoiding snacking constantly and sugar and/or sticky foods. Eat lots of vegetables and drink water instead of soda and juice. Visiting the dentist. Visit your dentist at least every six months and every time that you have a problem with your teeth and/ or gums. With clean and healthy teeth, we will have a healthy body coupled with nice smiles! “Say Cheese! Smile!”

6 ways to strengthen your nervous system Health advice from Duarte Arrais, Fisioclube Fuzeta.

T

he nervous system, one of the most complex and important in our body, is responsible for reacting to external and internal stimuli (through the senses) and respond to them with different body actions. The nervous system is responsible for controlling most of our bodily functions (breathing, heartbeat, hunger, thirst, posture, etc), as well as our emotions (happiness, sadness, etc) so it is important to strengthen the nervous system to ensure a good quality of life. There are some specific foods that act positively, regulating our nervous system: Brewer's yeast: Thanks to the B vitamins is also a great strengthener of the nervous central system, so it can improve cases of depression, anxiety, stress, apathy or lack of appetite. If we do not like its slightly bitter taste we can consume the powder mixed with juice or yogurt, or tablets. Some brands sell debittered yeast to soften the taste. If we take it with meals it will improve the assimilation of nutrients. Oatmeal: This delicious cereal acts to balance the nervous system, soothes the state of mild anxiety and irritability, relieves insomnia even in young children, and promotes mental performance. Interestingly it is a food that relaxes yet energizes. We can consume it cooked in sweet or savory, boiled with milk and cinnamon or creamed vegetables. We can also drink oat milk. Pollen: Pollen is a super food. It balances the pH of the blood and the nervous system, thanks to the B vitamins. Take a teaspoon of pollen every morning, mixed with water, juice or yoghurt. Magnesium: The nervous system disorders such as insomnia, anxiety, hyperactivity, anxiety or panic attacks may be a symptom of a lack of magnesium in our body.

10

In these cases the daily Consumption of foods rich in magnesium is recommended, such as: Cacao: The pure black chocolate has almost 500 milligrams of magnesium in a hundred grams Dark green leafy vegetables: kale, lettuce, spinach Fruits: banana, apricot, avocado, peach, plum Nuts: Almonds, cashews, hazelnuts, walnuts. Vegetables: Peas, lentils, Potato Pumpkin. Cereal: Brown rice, corn, oats. We can also opt for a magnesium supplement. In that case take about three grams per day orally divided in three doses so the body can absorb it properly. That is, one gram each meal. Medicinal plants These herbs act as a nervous system relaxant and invigorator. We can take them in herbal infusion, perfume our home and use oils made out of these herbs on our skin: Balm, Ginkgo Biloba, Hypericum, Basil, Lavender, Passionflower. Sunlight Sunlight is an excellent regulator of the nervous system and also provides us with vitamin D. To enjoy the benefits we can sunbath about 10 or 15 minutes a day, preferably at dawn or dusk. Walking barefoot in a natural setting Walking barefoot on humid soil, on wet grass, sandy beach, in a river, in the sea, etc., for at least half an hour a day, is the most economical and healthy way to balance our nervous system. It also helps us to eliminate electromagnetic radiation by continual exposure to electrical appliances. We recommend the test, since the results are noticeable from the first day. Therapy with water Water at different temperatures helps us balance our nervous system. We

can make various therapies: Cold and wet rubs with a humid towel, making the following steps: hand-shoulder, groin-foot, body. Doing it quickly, covering up after each time with a warm towel. Alternate arms Bath: start putting arms briefly in hot water and alternate. Last one has to be cold. In total it will last 30 seconds. In general, always finish a bath with cold water for a few seconds, it is very beneficial. Avoid the head area. Finally, magnesium sulfate baths (amount of about 100 grams) are very relaxing and revitalizing Duarte Arrais, Fisioclube, Fuseta.

Cranial Osteopathy and Respiratory Physiotherapy with Babies The birthing process is a natural journey, which can be difficult for both mother and baby. Interventions like epidural, inducements, forceps caesarean sections etc are becoming more common. While they may be necessary and indeed life saving, they are associated with strains and stresses on both mother and baby. Research has shown that these can benefit from Osteopathic treatment. While the baby’s head is designed to be flexible to facilitate the birthing process, strain can occur as the baby is in the birth canal or during the birth process. If the baby has an awkward lie, contractions are mistimed, or if mums pelvis cannot facilitate the birth these can cause strains to the head or neck. Osteopathic experience shows that there are common problems which can be traced back to the difficulties in the birthing process. These can include: For Mum: Back pain, Fatigue, Abdominal discomfort, Urinary problems, Mastitis etc. In addition, problems may occur after Caesarean section operations and episiotomy stitching for subsequent pregnancies. Evidence has shown that unresolved injuries can contribute to Post – natal depression. For baby: Birth strains can cause or contribute to; Torticollis, Pelvic and hip problems, Sleeplessness /Restlessness, Colic, Reflux, Feeding and Digestive conditions, Lethargy. Cranial Osteopathic treatments are gentle and safe for Moms, babies and children. Very specific delicate movements and pressure are applied where necessary to encourage the natural ability of the body to heal itself by releasing the strains and tensions. PUSH ME UP

with personal trainer Ricardo Cruz

P

hysical fitness may be the ultimate investment opportunity. Think of it this way, if you are willing to make the commitment you will feel and look healthier, have a new abundance of energy, be more self-confident, more productive and discover a more joyous and fulfilling life. These are rewards that money cannot buy and the substance of high quality living. The investment of exercise becomes even more attractive when you consider that there is absolutely no down-side, you have everything to gain and nothing whatsoever to lose. How many times can you remember ever having a better offer? The honest answer is probably never, and yet many of us fail to act on this extraordinary opportunity. We simply choose to put off time for ourselves and ignore the proven benefits that exercise can give us! Regular exercise or physical activity helps many of our body’s systems function better, keeps heart disease, diabetes, and a host of other diseases at bay, and is a key ingredient for losing weight. According to the Physical Activity Guidelines being physically active on a regular basis has some of the following many, immeasurable benefits: • Improves your chances of a long and healthy life. • Helps to protect you from developing heart disease, strokes, high blood pressure and reduces cholesterol. • Can help prevent type 2 diabetes and osteoporosis • Helps maintain balance and memory.

12

• Relieves symptoms of depression, anxiety and improves mood. • Prevents weight gain and promotes weight loss (when combined with a lower-calorie diet), and will help to keep weight off after weight loss. and • Improves heart, lung and muscle fitness. Personal trainers aren't for everyone, but a trainer provides certain benefits that you can't find when working out on your own. Here are five reasons a personal trainer may be right for you. Motivation One of the main reasons people benefit from a personal trainer is that they can become de-motivated with their workout regime or exercise program. Certified personal trainers can provide structure, accountability and variety, and help you to develop a lifestyle that encourages all round well being. Individualized program If you have any chronic health conditions, injuries or training goals a trainer will work with you to plan a safe, efficient program that considers these needs and will enable you to reach your health goals. Efficiency Personal Trainers help you focus on results, stop wasting time doing inefficient workouts and will develop a plan that will help you get maximum results in minimum time. Workout Safely Always monitors your training session and can provide objective feedback about your limits and strengths. Lose Weight There is a good reason that the

1

2 3 4 5

number one reason people hire a personal trainer is to lose weight and get into shape - it works. Ideal Homes

Have a beautiful home where you want it. Introducing Kitur, makers of cutting edge homes.

I

ntroducing Kitur, a company producing beautiful homes, hand built to owners specifications, with the advantage of being transportable, and without planning permission. The business covering Portugal was launched in March 2004 by Ă“scar Rosmaninho and wife Armanda Antunes, joined later by Paulo Antunes' brother Armanda Antunes. The 10 year journey so far has been full of challenges, growth and development, creating today's Kitur Brand. Ă“scar Rosmaninho started working at a very young age, and always had an ambition to build and market his own product. During a varied career, one of Ă“scar's jobs was transporting mobile homes throughout France, Spain and Portugal. On these long trips the idea to market mobile homes in Portugal slowly went from a dream to reality. He chose a high quality European manufacturer, and showed a mobile home at an exhibition in Portugal. Portugal had no tradition of Mobile homes, but whoever saw one fell in love with the quality, details and resemblance to a conventional house. The success was huge compared to the competition. The potential of this niche market was obvious, and in 2005

14

they began developing their own product. In Portugal the traditional dream of owning your own home was becoming impossible due to high prices and bureaucracy. Kitur's concept was to create custom made, comfortable, quality homes. A 'profitable, magical business enabling them personal fulfilment and dreams'. They wanted to transform the concept of mobile homes from holiday homes to everyday homes, by marketing a product that can provide a dream home, hence their slogan 'The Home of your Dreams'. In 2007 the team was formed and they started drawing, designing, building and selling several models of mobile homes, manufacturing everything from the chassis to the personalised furniture. So what makes their product so unique and so special? Each home is custom made in the factory and is totally transportable, allowing it to be easily located without foundations on the owners land. This avoids the complicated bureaucracy, and enables a very quick build, on average only 120 days. The location of the property can be changed to anywhere on a plot.

www.eastalgarvemag.com

Because houses are designed by the owners, they can be contemporary or traditional. The efficient thermal insulation means heating (and cooling) costs are kept low. Final prices are mutually agreed and there are no hidden costs (including VAT). Budgets and delivery dates are met as promised, as variation in climate does not effect the manufacturing of the home. Other benefits include: • Simple maintenance, with very low costs. • Turnkey projects. • House foundations are a self-contained structure made of hot-dipped galvanized steel tubing which elevates the house by 50cm, creating an air-chamber preventing the home from touching the ground, allowing efficient ventilation and prevention of humidity. • The moveable / flexible foundation also adds efficient protection in case of earthquakes. • Walls, ceiling, and floor structures are made of selfextinguishing undulated galvanized steel sandwich panels with 40mm thick polyurethane fillings, with a density of 42kg per cubic meter. • 25mm thick air chambers on exterior walls, 45mm thick

www.eastalgarvemag.com

air chambers on the interior walls. • Double - glazed windows. Prices of these homes vary from as little as €19,000 to as far as the imagination of the customer goes. All you need is a sufficient level plot, preferably with water, electricity and a septic tank. So what is the current and future strategy for Kitur? With a lul in the market in 2011, they felt that their strategic plan had to be readjusted. Progress would be slower but in two sectors: Continue to develop technical partnerships enabling the product to keep evolving using new technology ensuring the use of cutting-edge efficiency and innovation. (An example of this they already have a partnership with the University of Évora in energy efficiency and renewable energy). Tourism is another interest, and they already have a presence in the Algarve. Their intention is to create an alternative way of living to people who 'love our country' and see Portugal as their second home. Thus taking advantage of the tax benefits for foreigners with residency in Portugal.

OWNER interview

Location: Quarteira Nationality: Portuguese Is this your permanent home? Yes, I live here permanently with my wife and my children. Built: March 2011 Why did you choose this type of home? The land is agricultural, rustic land, therefore we did not have permission to build. My only option was a removable house without underground foundations. What are the benefits of living in this type of house? Cost; urban land would have been 10 times more expensive. I can put my house on another site one day if I want to! The speed from purchase to the completing of the house really impressed me. I also had a huge choice of details and finishes. No moisture problems as with a conventional house Turn the air conditioner on and the house is cool in 10 to 15 minutes. What would you change? If I bought a home today I would opt for thermal cutting frames to reduce condensation which occurs on some colder days. Extra Comments: Initially, living here felt slightly strange as the feeling is different from a conventional home, but after a while it becomes normal.

OWNER interview

Location: Faro Nationality: British Is this your permanent home? Yes Built: 2009 Why did you choose this type of home? We were downsizing, and of course the cost. What are the benefits of living in this type of house? Economical, dry, warm, no mould or damp, interior finishes are very hard wearing. What would you change? If I bought a home today I would opt for extra sound insulation in the roof. It can be noisy when it rains hard, and also have it pre-prepared for solar panels. I would also opt for more wardrobe space. Extra Comments: "We really are so pleased with our house. We've had four houses here in Portugal, I wouldn't swap our current home for a conventional home with the same specifications!"

Q

uinta dos Perfumes is located in the Eastern Algarve, near the town of Tavira and along the adjacent towns of Conceição and Cabanas, and incorporated into Pre-Park of Ria Formosa. This tourism project is set in a farm of thirty-six acres, where its main function is a citrus orchard. There are also other, smaller orchards, such as arbutus, lemon, walnut, fig and carob. In the early 50's and 60's, Quinta dos Perfumes, was a mallow farm. It contained a factory where mallows were distilled in order to extract the substance used in the production of perfumes (hence the name). In the seventies, this rural area was purchased by the current family owners, who turned the farm into a vineyard, taking advantage of the excellent climatic conditions of the area. The second generation of the family decided to convert the farm into a citrus orchard, a traditional culture of the Algarve. Today, it has developed into the 'Agro-tourism' project, sharing the beauty and tranquillity of Quinta dos Perfumes with those who visit it. We met one of the owners, Pedro Estrela, who was kind enough to show us around his stunning farm and holiday retreat. He explained how it was his father who helped plant the 20,000 orange trees. Pedro has now taken the reigns and has developed the Agro tourism project. The farm, which is fenced, is in a

great location, south of the EN 125, approximately 10 minutes walk from the towns of Conceição and Cabanas de Tavira, as well as their Paradise island beaches. Near three golf courses (Quinta da Ria , Quinta de Cima and Quinta de Benamor), adjacent to the eco-route and one of the Iberian pilgrimage routes of Caminho de Santiago. Quinta dos Perfumes has six bedrooms, five suites and a very bright double room, each with its own terrace and decorated in a minimalist style, blending period and modern elements beautifuly. Pedro explained how their rooms don't have numbers. "We like to make sure our guests feel special, therefore rooms are given colours, and visitors are treated as individuals". The suites are very spacious (30m2) and have a 'kitchenette”, fridge and mini-bar service. They also have a room and accessibility for guests with limited mobility. ue to the financial crisis there has been little or no demand for plots of land to build a house. There are various reasons for this such as the lack of bank finance, is it worth having to wait for 14 to 16 months before you can start enjoying your newly built property, can you trust the builder you selected not to go out of business during the process and more in general why put money at work when property prices are falling. Over the past two years we have seen buyers returning for already built properties, a trend that accelerated in the first months of 2014. We are now also experiencing renewed interest for building plots at a time when economic activity is picking up and business and consumer confidence continue to improve in Europe. However, it can still make financial sense to look at available resale properties at current prices, unless you can not find a suitable home that would fit your requirements and/or insist on building your own dream home. There are many attractively priced properties on the market and often at prices at or near replacement value. One advantage is “what you see is what you get”. You also do not have to wait for a year and a half before moving in. A normal period for completion is on average two months. The advantage with building a new house is that you can decide on the location, which can also be quite an adventure! The most popular plots are the ones that are not to big but also not too small, are attractively priced and preferably come with a nice sea view, close to a town/

Immaculate Three Bedroom Villa with Panoramic Views - €295,000

This pretty two bedroom villa is in a lovely peaceful location, within Santa Catarina, do Fonte do Bispo, and is in great condition. Although it is a countryside setting, it is not isolated, and all amenities are less than a five minute drive, and you can walk to a restaurant within ten minutes. This villa offers very good sized rooms throughout, but the lounge dining room is very big, with a fantastic terraces. REDUCED TO SELL, FANTASTIC OFFER

A well-presented three Bedroom detached villa in a wonderful hilltop location in Mesquita, providing nice views of the surrounding. The property has been very well maintained by its present owners and reflects when you view. The local village of Mesquita is less than five minute drive, where you will find the local mini market, cafés and two good Portuguese Restaurants. Just ten minute drive from São Brás de Alportel with its full amenities.

SANta Catarina 2 Bedroom Villa & Self-contained Apartment - €249,000

São Bras de Alportel

Well maintain property, elevated private plot with countryside views. Idyllic setting, less than 10 minutes’ drive from the market town of São Brás de Alportel. Lovingly tendered garden with established borders, shrubs and various trees. Shaded eating area with brick built BBQ and entertainment area. Recent swimming pool, raised with views & decking. Great investment & location for a permanent home with the benefit of additional rental income or a holiday rental.

village with amenities and if possible not more than 30 to 45 minute drive from the airport. In my experience the search always ends with a compromise. When looking at plots of land with an approved project, be aware that most have been on the market for a long time and the project may no longer be valid. Moreover, when in the past you could get planning permission for a two storey house in a rural location, current planning permission is only granted for a one storey house. In both cases you could get permission for a basement. The price of a plot of land is usually more stable than other properties, but if current planning laws result in

www.eastalgarvemag.com

a smaller house then a lower price for the land is appropriate. It is understandable why some people prefer to build their own home, however building a property is not for everyone and it can cause a lot of stress. For those who prefer to buy an attractively priced newly built house with a good size plot of land and beautiful panoramic sea view across the horizon, we may have the property you have been looking for. It is a newly built three bedroom villa with our reference LHV-1047 (see photo), and on the market at an already reduced asking price of Euro 215.000. Month 3- Mês 3 Ano novo

The third in our series following David Holland's experiences learning Portuguese as an Expat.

M

onth 3 of my arrival in the Eastern Algarve heralded the start of the New Year. The Christmas period celebrations were not ideal preparation for the input of fresh data! A gentle return to the business of learning Portuguese was called for. The months of the year provided the ideal platform as they are very similar to the English. Apart from ‘Abril,’ all the months end with the letter ‘o’ which is pronounced ‘oo’ , being unstressed in each case; thus Janeiro, Fevereiro etc. through to Dezembro. I learned that the town of Rio de Janeiro was so named following the discovery of Guanabara Bay, around which the city would be built, by the Portuguese on 1st January 1502. It is worrying at any time to be

28

accused of not knowing what day of the week it is. Now was as good a time as any to address the issue. Saturday and Sunday translate easily to sábado and domingo. But then the Portuguese language springs a refreshing surprise. Segunda-feira starts the working week; the mundane sound of other languages reflects the gloom of the return to the workplace whether on a Monday, montag or even the Italian version, lunedi. The number theme continues through the week to sexta-feira, Friday. In the spoken language the days of the week tend to abbreviate; as in terça,quarta and quinta for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. The literal translation of ‘feira,’ is fair having come from the word for holiday ‘feria.’ It was felt at the time

(6th century or thereabouts) that the days of the week should not be a daily reminder of the defunct pagan gods. However it was only the Portuguese who made the change and the rest of Christendom to this day use words for the days of the week derived from the names of earlier deities! (case in point Thursday from the Norse god Thor, (’Thor’s day.’) Not knowing the time of day is similarly worrying but the principles for describing the time are similar to English. The main difference is that the hour is generally expressed in the plural; hence ‘que horas são?’ what’s the time and são onze horas

CURTAINS & SOFT FURNITURE - its 11 o’clock. Modest achievements in this third month, but a couple of curiosities I noted. On regular walks through the salt flats to the sea I had often stopped at the well-known Forte do Rato. I had assumed that Rato was Portuguese for rat but it means mouse. Rat is ‘ratazana.’ Another misunderstanding was resolved when it was pointed out that the sign above a shop reading Força Portuguesa referred to Portuguese power or force and not Portuguese gallows (Forca ), long since banned. A reminder to English speakers to take note of accents. Next month will include a look at the wonderful variety of marisco (seafood/shellfish) here in the Eastern Algarve and its related vocabulary. Xicken Piri-Piri

Brand new restaurant between Conceição and Cacela.

W

e are delighted this month to introduce a brand new restaurant situated right on the EN125, opposite Quinta da Ria golf course. With a wealth of both inside and outside seating, after total refurbishment, Xicken Piri-Piri recently opened on the 12th February. We were very warmly welcomed by Filipe Morais and his father Alberto, who are originally from Coimbra and now live in Tavira. Filipe spent two years in London working in the restaurant industry, and more recently managed the Beach Bar Praia Verde. He has now embarked on the families’ brand new venture providing their international clients

30

with sumptuous speciality dishes. Their concept is based on the famous Piri-Piri with all dishes prepared on the rotating charcoal grill which ensures a fabulous uniformed flavour and unique taste. The experienced head chef is also originally from Coimbra and together with the obvious chicken, he also prepares and cooks their speciality dishes of Pork Ribs, barbequed Piglet Ribs, superb grilled Cod Fish and grilled skewered Prawns. Their unique sauces, which are Fillipe’s very own recipes, ensure that you can add as much spice to suit your palate. All the Xicken PiriPiri staff offer a very warm welcome, and the standard of service is excellent, whilst the surroundings are relaxed

and comfortable. Coming soon is the adjacent International Sports Bar and also a Boutique shop selling regional products, Philipe explained. They also provide a take away service and children’s play area. It was a real pleasure to meet Filipe and Alberto and experience their fabulous cuisine and service. Why not try one of their speciality dishes together with coffee served with the Piri-Piri chocolate!!. We wish them tremendous success, you can find them on the main EN125, between Conceição and Cacela. For more details: Tel 351 281 328 635 or see www.xickenpiripiri.com.

ranges, l e m o n s , limes, grapefruit, tangerines and kumquats can be grown in almost any frost-free environment. Though these trees are often grown for their ornamental value, many varieties can be grown for their delicious fruit. These trees are ideal for growing in sheltered containers in cooler climates and it is very possible in our warmer climate for these trees to present flowers and fruit any time of the year due to a four to six week growth cycles. Growing from seed Choose what kind of citrus fruit you would like to grow. This may be a simple choice if you have a favorite but you may want to consider planting a variety of citrus to see what grows best in your climate. Tangerines, mandarins and satsumas are more cold-tolerant than sweet oranges and are also more tolerant of drought. Kumquats make good container plants but any citrus can be grown virtually anywhere. Seeds can be ordered or you can use them from fruit already fallen or purchased for food. Start the seedlings by planting them in small or medium growing pots that are well drained in the bottoms. Fill the pots with rich soil that has a good amount of humus content and also add a handful of clean sand to each pot. Water the loosely packed soil before planting your seeds. Plant your seeds at least 1-inch below the surface of the soil. You can plant up to five or six seeds per 10-inch pot if you like. These will need to be transplanted into singular pots later. Make sure that the temperature is not below 40 degrees for the seedlings. Place them in a sunny part of a garden or on a sunny window sill if it is still cold outside. Citruses prefer a temperature of at least 50 degrees or higher. Keep the soil moist while seeds are germinating with a water-filled spray bottle. They should sprout within 3 to 4 weeks. Let them grow for at least 6 months before transplanting them into the ground or into bigger pots if you wish to keep them indoors. Water them but do not let the roots sit in standing water. Orange trees can grow from 8 to 25 feet in height depending on the variety and growing conditions. Once trees are established, they grow best in the ground or in large tubs. Prune mature trees as lightly as possible. Citrus do not need heavy pruning. Most of the time they are pruned for shape and looks more than anything. Buying your Citrus tree Citrus trees are the misunderstood trees of landscaping. Citrus trees aren't really trees, they're shrubs. Reaching a height of 25 feet, they may be the ideal plants for your yard.

But there are tricks to purchasing a good citrus tree. Buy field-grown citrus trees whenever possible, identifiable by its burlap-wrapped rootball. Such trees are more costly, but healthier. Consider container citrus trees that are not overgrown. This puts the health of the plant into question. Purchase small citrus trees that take to the ground faster. A big tree takes as long as a small tree to produce fruit. Look for consistently dark-colored leaves. The uniform color is an indication of a healthy, disease-free plant. Ensure that the graft union is approximately 2 inches above the ground. Many citrus trees are grafted. A graft union is a doglegged bend in the trunk. If the bend is too close to or below the soil it can rot or grow fungus. Investigate the trunk for mars. Marring leaves a citrus tree trunk damaged and might indicate a weak or injured tree. You want to buy the healthiest citrus tree possible. Assess the variety of citrus trees available before you buy. Citrus trees are available in many varieties of orange, mandarin, tangerine, tangelo, kumquat, lemon, lime, grapefruit and other exotics. You can find dwarf citrus trees to buy that are great for container gardening as well. Find out if the variety desired is available in your area. Some plants are restricted to control disease. Here's how to plant a citrus tree so you can grow your own fresh fruit. Select a sunny spot with welldrained soil. Dig a hole slightly less deep (about an inch) than the depth of the root ball and twice as wide. Make the bottom flat and the sides rough, not smooth. Remove the tree from the container by setting it on its side and gently pulling on the lower trunk. If the root ball doesn't slide out easily, cut the pot off with shears. Set the tree in the bottom of the hole, making sure the top of the root ball sits slightly above the surrounding soil level. Fill in around the root ball with the original soil, tamping gently as you

Gardens fill in. If your soil is mostly sand or clay, amend it by blending in organic matter such as compost (add about a third by volume) before filling the hole. Build a 4- to 6-inch-high soil berm around the tree. This is your watering basin, and it should be just a bit wider than the hole. Fill the basin with water and let it drain. Repeat the process at least twice. Citrus tree problems Citrus trees planted in the home landscape need observation to detect sucker growth and diseases. Sweet-flavored citrus is grafted to a hardy sour-orange rootstock, which produces stems known as suckers. Suckers originate from below the graft of the tree and grow tall, straight and may have thorns. Suckers are best pruned when they are small in diameter to lessen disease and shock to the tree when removed. Cut sucker branches close to the main trunk. Citrus trees have an attractive shape,

fragrant blossoms and delicious edible fruit. With the proper care, a citrus tree can be a sweet and/or sour addition to many lawns. Citrus trees like abundant sunlight. When too little sunlight is provided, a citrus tree will not fully develop, bloom or produce fruit. Citrus trees do not tolerate cold. Even a moderate freeze may kill a citrus tree. Citrus trees require deep soil with good drainage both on the surface and underground. If they do not have adequate drainage, the standing water can damage the trees. Also, citrus trees will not survive in salty soil. Citrus canker is a very contagious citrus bacteria that can cause leaf loss, damaged fruit, fruit drop and dieback. It is spread through the air or by insects, birds or humans. Yellow halo lesions or scabs will appear on the leaves, fruit, bark and trunk. Melanose is a fungal infection that does not affect the fruit of a citrus tree, but it does make the fruit rind

scabbed-like and unsightly. It does not affect grapefruit trees. Citrus trees can be damaged by insects, i n c l u d i n g aphids, citrus whitefly, orange dog caterpillars, citrus thrips, citrus bud mites, citrus red mites and snails. Many infestations can be avoided, however, by treating trees with the appropriate sprays and proper sanitation program. Don’t let any of these problems put you off planting and growing citrus tree in your garden, because the benefits of having fresh fruit to hand which taste so much better than fruit you often buy and you will always have that slice of lemon for your G&T.

F

Consider Your Options

ebruary saw some interesting developments in the currency markets, with Sterling starting the month in a strong position before falling away to just below the 1.20 mark. We then saw an increase to a lofty high of 1.2250 before another decline to 1.21. What caused these moves? As I mentioned last month, The Bank of England had indicated that they might consider increasing interest rates if unemployment reached 7%. In fact they chose not to as other indicators, such as manufacturing, had not increased as expected. The BOE went on to say that caution would be key and they would step in if Sterling became too strong against other currencies to protect the economic recovery. What does this mean to you? It is difficult to offer predictions in such a volatile market but in the short term you can probably expect the ÂŁ to â‚Ź exchange rate to remain between 1.20 and 1.22. If the Eurozone starts to gain momentum then you could see these rates fall.

www.eastalgarvemag.com

How can you protect yourself against these fluctuations when transferring large sums? You will see Fx brokers offering Forward Contracts. These contracts allow you to agree a fixed exchange rate for any period up to 2 years in advance. Clients making large capital purchases, such as houses, cars, etc. have found this option useful as it provides certainty and allows budgets to be planned accurately. Forward Contracts require a deposit of 10% of the overall amount to be transferred. If you are transferring smaller amounts on a regular basis then you can benefit from similar protection by setting up a Regular Payment Plan. Again it is possible to agree a fixed rate for any period up to 2 years but no deposit is required. For those bringing over pensions or investment income on a monthly basis a regular payment plan provides the certainty of knowing exactly how much you will receive each month. You will also see Fx brokers offering Stop Loss and Limit Orders. These contracts give you the option to specify rates at wish you wish to

buy or sell currency. For example, it is possible to ask your Fx broker to contact you when the exchange rate reaches a certain point so that you can transfer your funds. This can be used when you are under no time constraints and only want to move your funds when it is beneficial for you. Likewise, you can ask your broker to contact you to transfer your funds if the exchange rate falls to a certain level preventing you from losing too much. Timing is everything. Speak to your broker when you think you might need to transfer your funds so that they can explain your options and recommend one, or a combination, of these contracts. If you have any questions or would like to discuss currency exchange generally then feel free to contact me. T

IRS Tax Return 2013

he submission of the IRS tax return for 2013 has started in March 2014 for all taxpayers with incomes of category A (working for others) and / or category H (Pensions). The remaining taxpayers with incomes from other categories, even if they accumulate income in categories A and / or class H, must deliver the statement of income during the month of May. As you may know, the tax year in Portugal is the same as the calendar year This means that sole traders or residents with a foreign income need to deliver their Tax Return in May for any earnings from January to December 2012. Although traditionally the Portuguese leave everything for the last minute we strongly advise our customers to prepare everything and offer some tips to complete this process smoothly: Make sure you and your partner have a password to access the Tax Portal. If you do not have one, you can request a new one, which in average takes 5 days to be received; Gather a copy of your passport or id and Fiscal Number (NIF) for you, your partner and any dependents you may have;

Gather all documents that can be used to reduce your tax bill, such as medical or chemist receipts, invoices, statements for your insurances, investments and mortgage, rental receipts, etc; Gather the statements of income and withholding taxes; And remember, keep all documents for at least 10 years. If you have sold a property in 2013, please make sure you have copies of the deeds (for the purchase and for the sale) and also any invoices for the real estate commission for the sale and any improvements that you made to your property. These can be deducted against any capital gains tax. If you have a resident status but your income was earned abroad, you have to deliver along with the tax return the ‘J’ Annex which discriminates the values received abroad. There are taxation agreements in place between Portugal and several countries to avoid double taxation, so the impact this will have on your IRS depends primarily on two things: a) If there is a double taxation agreement between countries, and if there is, if the average rates of IRS are similar; b) If it was made withholding any tax

in your country. Normally the payment of any extra tax in Portugal for these incomes can be avoided by completing a form that needs to be stamped in the tax department of your country, and delivered here in Portugal, to prove that the tax was already paid at source. The Tax Department services check back later for withholdings, and type of income for which is based on the country or countries where this was earned, and if all is well, there is no tax on this income. If withholding at a rate lower than the national level, an adjustment is made and the income taxed at a rate that reflects these differences. Also as the tax period in your country might be different than Portugal (here is from January to December) make sure you have a statement to show the income and the tax withheld on these. We can assist you with all this bureaucracy, please feel free to contact us for a chat and avoid any late submission fines. the possibility of using 15% of the VAT spent on restaurants, shops and beauty salons during 2013 to deduct on the IRS bill. In addition to this deduction, we have the already classic expenditure on health, education and home, albeit less generous than in the past year. But to take advantage of any of these deductions you must have collected invoices between January 1 and December 31 2013. See below some of the most common expenditures and limits for tax deduction. Expenditure on health The Inland Revenue accepts IRS deductions up to 10 % of all health costs related to the acquisition of goods and services VAT exempt or subject to a 6% rate of VAT. Contrary to what has happened until 2011 when there was no limit, this type of deduction now has a total value of EUR 838.44 per household. In families with three or more children,

www.eastalgarvemag.com

this roof can be increased by 125.77 euros per each dependent providing there are invoices for each one of them. In practice, for every â‚Ź 100 spent, your tax is reduced by 10 euros. Expenditure on education 30 % of all spending on books and school supplies, tuition or After Time School can be used to shoot down the IRS, up to 760 euros. As in health, here too the number of dependents can make a difference, as for each child (provided they are more than 3) that limit can be increased by EUR 142.5. Home expenses The IRS tax deductions with your mortgage have again suffered another cut this year and instead of an allowance of 591 euros deduction, the new allowance has dropped to 296 euros. To reach this value of deduction only the portion of interest paid is considered (not

capital redemption) of the mortgage. This means that the older mortgages (with a smaller interest rate) might not fully take advantage of this deduction. If you live in a rented house, please note that 15% of the rents you paid can be deducted to your IRS, up to a yearly value of 502 euros. Restaurants, salons & workshops When filling the IRS tax return of 2013, taxpayers will feel for the first time, the benefits of collecting all the invoices on the restaurants, hair & beauty saloons and workshop garages. The benefit allows IRS to deduct 15% of the VAT paid on those services, up to 250 euros, providing that the invoices have been issued with your NIF number. If you would like any further information please give me a call on 912 448 103 or 281 029 059. Ricardo Chaves, All Finance Matters.

n previous articles we have talked about the efforts and advances made by companies that we work with to make the products they produce more efficient and cost less to build and reflect this in reduced selling price to their customers. Providing equipment both to a higher specification and achieving more for less too is not an easy task in any economic climate so success in this task has been a major triumph for them. In next month’s issue we will look at both the latest product offerings from these companies plus a phenomenal new range of wood burners with outstanding performance, looks and operation from a producer that has been in the business for many years and have completely revisited the design concept in their efforts to produce the best of the best.

OLHANENSE SHOW FIGHTING SPIRIT

A

All the latest local sports news from Chris Wright.

sparse crowd braved the appalling weather conditions in early February to witness Olhanense gain a valuable point against Marítimo. Manager Giuseppe Galderisi brought in keeper Ricardo, Nigerian midfielder Obodo, winger Paulo Sérgio and Argentinean attacking midfield player Mario Santana for his debut. Santana was the sixteenth nationality to pull on the Olhanense shirt this season; a record only bettered by Fulham FC, two seasons ago, who used players from eighteen different countries! The Madeira visitors scored an early penalty. The home side then left it late to draw level when substitute Diakhite equalised sixty seconds after coming on in the 87th minute. The following week at the Estádio José Alvalade in Lisbon a new young starlet Carlos Mané made all the difference as he scored the only goal of the game as second place Sporting Lisbon beat relegationstrugglers Olhanense . The Algarveans worked hard in the second-half and gave Sporting a big scare in the final minutes when it looked like Dionisi was going to tap in an equaliser but the striker's shot was blocked. The resulting rebound could have gone

42

anywhere but crept just the wrong side of the post. A vociferous crowd roared on a rejuvenated Olhanense as they took all three points with a vital 2-1 win over Gil Vicente. Pedro Proença, who refereed the 2012 Champions League Final between Chelsea and Bayern Munich, was the busiest man on the pitch dishing out two red cards and eight yellow! On fourteenth minutes Olhanense’s Nigerian midfielder Obodo saw red after an off-the-ball incident. The home side then conceded most of the possession but the defence stood firm with Kroldrup and Mladen in commanding form. Up front ‘Man-ofthe-Match’ Dionisi chased every ball and shortly after the break he got his just reward. After weaving past two defenders in the penalty area he was tripped by Halisson who became the second player to get his marching orders. The Italian centre-forward picked himself up and calmly slotted home the penalty. Shortly afterwards Gil Vicente levelled matters when Hugo Vieira found the back of the net although Belec might feel he could have done better. In the final minute, with the home fans roaring their team on, Dionisi and Vojtus combined well before the ball was played

through to Sérgio Paulo. The winger took one touch and blasted the ball under the despairing dive of Adriano. The next home games at the José Arcanjo Stadium, Olhão are against Belenenses on the weekend 8th/9th March, Nacional 22nd/23rd March and SC Braga 5th/6th April. For further information email: Christopher. wright@hotmail.co.uk or phone (00351) 916 504 903. TOUR OF THE ALGARVE DRAWS THE CROWDS Mark Cavendish sprinted to his first win of the season on the fifth and final stage of the Volta ao Algarve as he won the 155.9 kilometre (97 miles) long stage from Tavira to Vilamoura in 3h 24m 10s. Cavendish, (Omega Pharma - Quick-Step) beat France's Arnaud Demare (FDJ) to the line in Vilamoura by less than a bike length, with Bryan Coquard (Europcar) following closely behind in third. Polish rider Kwiatkowski was overall winner with Alberto Contador in second place and Portugal’s world champion Rui Costa back in third. Cavendish - known as the ‘Manx Missile’- was born on the Isle of Man, which he says will always be his real home, but he also has a home in Essex and a training base in Quarrata, Tuscany, Italy.

SIR TOM FINNEY : ONE OF THE ‘LIONS OF LISBON’

S

ir Tom Finney who died recently at the age of 91 was a member of the England team that mauled Portugal 10-0 in Lisbon in front of 65,000 bemused Portuguese in 1947. It is the heaviest defeat that Portugal has ever suffered. England's victorious team were labelled the "Lions of Lisbon" on their return home. Three years later, Tom Finney returned to Lisbon with the England team and scored four goals in a 5-3 victory. At the postmatch banquet the whole Portugal team rose-as-one and saluted the maestro with the toast, “To Mr Finney — The Master.” The great winger, one of English football’s finest players and gentlemen, scored 187 league goals in 433 games for Preston North End and notched 30 goals in 76 games for his country. Tom Finney retired in 1960 but in 1963 he made a brief comeback to play for the Irish club Distillery when they played giants Benfica in the European Cup. Finney dazzled as the part-timers managed a famous 3-3

draw in the first-leg in which a young Eusébio scored for Benfica. Sir Tom Finney, (who got £14 a week and £12 in a summer when there were no games so he could concentrate on being Preston’s most famous plumber), like all his contemporaries was slavishly underpaid. How does Wayne Rooney’s new contract of £300,000 per week compare? £14 in the mid-to-late1950s, when Finney was at his peak with Preston and England, would be worth £267 today. So by that measure Rooney would expect £13,904 a year, not the £15.6million on the table. Sir Tom’s career earnings with PNE totalled less than two-thirds of what Rooney will take home in a week. And against the £194,656 (plus win bonuses) with which Finney’s fourteen years of uncomplaining one-club loyalty was rewarded, the 27-year-old Rooney stands to bank £85.8m if he lasts the next five-and-a-half years at United. Times have certainly changed.

tudies show between 60% and 65% of all golf shots occur inside 100 yards of the hole and are more important for scoring. The following tip will improve your distance control from inside 100 yards of the hole and lower your scores. With your lob wedge, sand wedge, gap wedge and/or pitching wedge every player should be able to play three different distances of shot by using three different swing lengths. The shortest swing should be played from the narrowest stance with 65% of the player’s weight on their left foot and with the fullest shot a slightly wider stance with only 55% of the weight on the forward foot. The shortest swing would have the left arm reaching ‘8 o’clock’ on the backswing, then ‘9 o’clock’ and finally ‘10 o’clock’, ensure to finish with your weight on your lead foot and shoulders and hips facing the target. To calculate your distances with each club and swing length, hit 10 shots with each swing length and choose your most consistent shots to determine your average distance with that swing and club. Write them all down so you can refer to them on the course, this will improve your overall accuracy from inside 100 yards of the hole, leaving shorter putts and turning potential bogeys into pars.
