Welcome...
EastAlgarve m
...to your May issue. This month it seems to all be happening in Tavira! We introduce the new owners of the Pink Flamingo Bar in Tavira, meet ice-cream maker and seller George Muxagata in Tavira, and also the people running the creative art studio in... yes, you guessed it, Tavira. Unidade Criativa offer workshops in various creative techniques, one of them I've always wanted to try; the pottery wheel. Not only as a reminder of Demi Moore in the film Ghost, but because I think I'd be good at it! In our gardening section we have part two of our guide to starting your own vegetable patch and also a great solution to growing vegetables and herbs in smaller spaces from garden center Geojardim. Other regular features include a great golf tip from James Beesley, professional at Monte Rei Golf, excellent financial advice from experts Ricardo Chaves and Gavin Scott from Blevens Franks. I hope you enjoy this issue, have a great month. Editor

thlete Filipe Conceição from São Brás de Alportel and the sole representative of Portugal, in the 'Iron Man' competition in South Africa, reached the target in 11 hours, 28 minutes and 48 seconds. He came in 50th place in his category (45 to 49 year olds) and 362nd place out of the 1624 athletes competing. Held on April 14th, the ‘Iron Man’ contest is one of the most demanding competitions in the world, consisting of a 3.8 km swim in the sea, followed by riding 180.2 km by bike and, finally, running 42.2 km. Passionate about sport and the challenge of overcoming physical and psychological limits, Filipe Conceição spent the last year in regular and intensive training to be able to overcome the obstacles of this ordeal. The result exceeded his expectations.

Sunburn
Skin cancer prevention advice
I
With summer upon us, we thought we'd answer some of the most common questions asked about sunburn.
f your skin has gone red in the sun, it’s sunburnt. Sunburn doesn't have to be red-raw, peeling or blistering. What is sunburn? A sunburn is a clear sign that ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun or sunbeds has damaged the genetic material in your skin cells their DNA. Damaged DNA can cause cells to start growing out of control. This can lead to skin cancer. Getting a painful sunburn just once every two years can triple the risk of melanoma, the most serious type of skin cancer. Your body's attempt to repair this damage is what causes the painful symptoms of a sunburn. Why do sunburns peel? Sometimes, the sun damages skin cells so severely that they must be destroyed. Peeling after sunburn is your body's way of getting rid of these damaged cells. This is necessary because cells damaged by the sun are at risk of becoming cancerous. Although skin peels and new skin layers form, some damage may remain. This can increase your risk of skin cancer. So it is important to try to avoid burning in the first place.
8
Are sunburns like burns you get from touching something hot? No, sunburns are caused by ultraviolet radiation (UV) from the sun, which does not feel warm. The heat in the sun comes from infra-red rays, which do not burn your skin. This is why people can still burn on cool days. When you touch a hot object, your skin may also become red, swollen and painful. But the DNA inside your skin cells is not damaged. Both heat burns and sunburns will fade, but only sunburns can cause lasting damage to the DNA in your skin cells. Why are sunburns red, hot or painful? When UV radiation damages DNA, your body tries to repair the damage. The blood vessels in the local area swell, allowing blood to rush into it. This is why sunburn looks red. Blood inside your body is also hot, which is why it feels like sunburns give off heat - actually, they are usually no hotter than your core body temperature. The wider blood vessels allow the cells of your immune system to travel to the site of the damage. They also release chemicals which
trigger inflammation - this is why bad sunburns are swollen and painful. How does the sun damage DNA? There are two major types of UV rays that damage our skin UVB is responsible for the majority of sunburns and it can cause skin cancer. UVA penetrates deeper into the skin. It ages the skin, but contributes much less towards sunburn. Recent evidence tells us that both UVA and UVB can damage DNA in the skin, which can lead to skin cancer. A third type of UV ray, UVC, is the most dangerous of all, but it is completely blocked out by the ozone layer and doesn’t reach the earth's surface. Is the DNA damage from the sun permanent? Your body has ways of repairing most of the damage. But it is not perfect - some damaged DNA can be left behind. This is why it is important to avoid getting caught out by sunburn. How can I protect myself? Don't let sunburn catch you out. When your risk of burning is high you can use shade, clothing and SPF15+ sunscreen to protect your skin. Also remember to re-apply sun cream after bathing.

Body cleanse and detox diet tips for beginners Feeling sluggish or out of sync? Having skin problems, aches and pains, or digestive problems? Having trouble kicking off your weight loss? It might be time for a body detox.
P
racticed for centuries by many cultures around the world — including ayurvedicand Chinese medicine systems — detoxification is about resting, cleaning and nourishing the body from the inside out. By removing and eliminating toxins, then feeding your body with healthy nutrients, detoxifying can help protect you from disease and renew your ability to maintain optimum health. How does detoxification work? Basically, detoxification means cleaning the blood. It does this mainly by removing impurities from the blood in the liver, where toxins are processed for elimination. The body also eliminates toxins through the kidneys, intestines, lungs, lymph and skin. However, when this system is compromised, impurities aren't properly filtered and every cell in the body is adversely affected. A detox program can help the body's natural cleaning process by: • Resting the organs through fasting; • Stimulating the liver to drive toxins from the body; • Promoting elimination through the intestines, kidneys and skin; • Improving circulation of the blood; and
www.eastalgarvemag.com
• Refueling the body with healthy nutrients. How do you know if you need to detoxify? Everyone should detox at least once a year. A shortdetoxifying program or whole body cleanse is generally safe; in fact, scientific studies show that a detox is beneficial for health. It is not advised for nursing mothers, children, and patients with chronic degenerative diseases, cancer or tuberculosis. Consult your health care practitioner if you have questions about whether detoxing is right for you. Where do you begin? First, lighten up your toxin load. Eliminate alcohol, coffee, cigarettes, refined sugars and saturated fats, all of which act as toxins in the body and are obstacles to your healing process. Also, minimize use of chemical-based household cleanersand personal health care products (cleansers, shampoos, deodorants and toothpastes), and substitute natural alternatives. Another deterrent to good health is stress, which triggers your body to release stress hormones into your system. While these hormones can provide the "adrenaline rush" to win a race or meet a deadline, in large

Health amounts they create toxins and slow down detoxification enzymes in the liver. So it's a good idea to detox stressful life situations along with detoxifying your body. Yoga and meditation are simple and effective ways to relieve stress by resetting your physical and mental reactions to the inevitable stress life will bring. Which detox program is best for you? There are many detoxification programs and detox recipes, depending on your individual needs. Many programs follow a 7-day schedule because, it takes the body some time to clean the blood. Other popular detoxing programs and natural body cleanses include:
Cleansing supplement packages, which generally contain fiber, vitamins, herbs and minerals. There are several safe products on the market, with easy-to-follow instructions. A routine of drinking o n l y water one day each w e e k — an ancient practice of many cultures.
10 ways to help your body detoxify! After a detoxification program, you can cleanse your body daily through diet, supplements and lifestyle practices.
1
Eat plenty of fiber, including brown rice and organically-grown fresh fruits and vegetables. Beets, radishes, artichokes, cabbage, broccoli, spirulina, chlorella, and seaweed are excellent detoxifying foods. Cleanse and protect the liver by taking herbs such as dandelion root, burdock and milk thistle, and drinking green tea. Take vitamin C, which helps the body produce glutathione, a liver

compound that drives away toxins. Drink at least 2 litres of water every day. Breathe deeply to allow oxygen to circulate more completely through your system. Transform stress by emphasizing positive emotions. Practice hydrotherapy by taking a very hot shower for five minutes, allowing the water to run on your back. Follow with cold water for 30 seconds. Do this three times, and

then get into bed for 30 minutes. Sweat in a sauna so your body can eliminate wastes through perspiration. Dry-brush your skin or try detox foot spas/foot baths to remove toxins through your pores. Special brushes are available at natural products stores. What is the most important way to detoxify? Exercise, one hour every day, or if that is not possible a good 20 min walk everyday.

So many have become personal friends, thank you very much to those people you know who you are :-) The new Manager, Wallison will ensure you have a thoroughly great time. raphic art, sculpture and ceramic workshops focus on giving us the knowledge to create fine art work, interact with the community or friends and perhaps make new ones too. We were delighted to meet Miguel Martinho and Isabel Viegas as well as Isabel’s daughter, Maria who now run the fabulous workshops from Tavira. Unidade Criativa are located on the road leading out to 4 Aguas, and the workshops are available to local residents as well as anyone interested in developing cultural activities whilst on holiday here in the beautiful East Algarve.

Miguel is originally from Lisbon and after completing a post graduate degree in bronze casting in Vancouver he went on to work in the movie industry and now helps with the theatre in Tavira, Isabel studied graphic arts and makes all the ceramics in the worshop. They both started the association in 2011 and Miguel explained with their combined wealth of knowledge, the studio now offers a vast range of topics for the workshops, whether it be: sculpture, clay modelling, etching, medal making, silk screen, t-shirt printing, plaster part moulding or the potter’s wheel there are so many different workshops

workshops available. Each Saturday there is a class for children to play with clay. They begin at the table and once they have progressed they can move on to the potter’s wheel, a great way to maybe celebrate a birthday and have a potter party? All groups are kept small so if you are a group of friends who have the same interest or wish to learn a new skill you can come together, or the workshops can bring individuals together, both of which help people to inspire and motivate each other and “create happiness”. Miguel explained that they invite people to teach if they

ith the lovely warm days truly here, we were pleased to be able to share the local story of one of the oldest ice cream makers here in the East Algarve 'Muxagata'. Jorge and his family from Santa Luzia make their own ice cream which is available in an amazing range of over 20 flavours. They are situated at the green cabin in the pretty gardens near the beautiful band stand in the centre of Tavira, right on the bank of the river. Jorge was kind enough to invite us to see how he makes the base ice cream and how the special Italian flavours

hen entering a real estate agency, it is usually the sales person you come across first. Both as the vendor or the buyer of a property. Usually conversations start off with a small talk about the weather, a longer conversation about the market, but surely at some point you will be seeking advice about tax and legal matters concerning property. Let's make it short; in an ideal world, you will be hoping to sit in front of a person who knows what they are talking about. A person who is dedicated to his job with some continuous formation in their work field. Someone who doesn’t do his job part time in combination with other jobs. After all it is about selling or buying your property, often the biggest asset you will be ever buying or selling in your life. Something you have been working hard for. Once upon a time the Portuguese government thought exactly that way. There was a law (called 211/2004), which was considered to be a milestone concerning the development of Portugal in creating a highly transparent and wellcontrolled Real Estate practice. With regards to sales people rendering their services independently, the law foresaw that every sales person

These apartments were built in 2006, are modern, and finished to a high standard. had to obtain a sales license from the so-called INCI institute, the core governmental body regulating the construction and real estate activities in Portugal. To obtain this sales license every sales person had to fulfill several requirements. Amongst these requirements was a certain level of education, having no outstanding debts at the Finance Department or social security debts, having continuous formation credit points, having no entry in the criminal register. Every 3 years this license had to be renewed and proof of the above mentioned requirements provided. It was also not allowed to have any other financial activity – as an independent Real Estate sales person you had to exclusively work in Real Estate. On the 8th of February 2013 the Portuguese government introduced a new law concerning Real Estate practice in Portugal. The new law has number 15/2013 and one major focus was given to the revision of rules and regulations for sales people rendering their service as freelancers for Real Estates Agencies in Portugal. With the new law, all requirements have been abolished and INCI is for the time

Fuseta - €289,000 This stunningly unique resort on the waterfront in Fuzeta, comprises of 30 apartments, and twenty villas, all properties are modern, and finished to a very high quality. The waterfront is called the Ria Formosa which is a natural park. This stretches along the Eastern Algarve coastling for 60Km. The warm water in the Estuary is protected from the open sea by a narrow strip of sandy islands, with miles of golden sandy beaches. The town of Fuzeta is just a few minutes walk. Here you will find many cafes, restaurants, and shops.
being no longer regulating the activity of independent sales people. As consequence every person and his dog having a simple working agreement with an estate agency can become a sales person in Portugal. No license, no continuous formation nor proof of any knowledge about real estate laws are any longer needed – officially. Surely obtaining the license in the past did not come with a promise for a high-quality sales person, but clearly it out ruled the possibility of each and everybody trying to make some money quickly. There were many “black sheep” and rogue traders around in the past in Portugal and, as probably many of you heard, they created a lot of damage. Buying and selling property is a matter of trust; make sure you get it right from the start. his is so easy even I can make it; once again my mother-in-law gets the credit for this recipe. Frozen baby squid is best for this, fresh squid can be messy to prepare. Packs in Lidl are very good, and have about 16 in each pack.
By Amanda Gleaves
You will need • 1 pack baby squid • ½ chourico • 2 small onions • Olive oil • 2 cloves of garlic • 1 mug of cooked white rice • Cup of white wine • Tomato purée • Salt/pepper • 2 teaspoons chilly powder • Parsley Inside the squid you should find the tentacles, rinse the squid and tentacles and leave them to strain. Finally cut the onion and chourico, and fry them in a little olive oil. Take off the heat and add the rice and the tentacles (finely cut). Mix all the ingredients together add some salt pepper and chopped parsley. Using a spoon, fill each squid with the mixture and close with a toothpick. In a heavy based pan fry the onions, add the stuffed squid, 4 table tablespoons of tomato puree and the gar-

lic. Fry a little more then add the wine, parsley, salt and pepper and the chilly. Cook for about half an hour until the squid comes apart easily. Take out some of the sauce and use
it as a base to cook up some rice to accompany it. Serve with rice and a green salad. Not only does this smell divine, it tastes fantastic too.

ontinuing from last month; Plant Care Thinning Despite the recommendations to sow thinly you will usually find that the emerging seedlings are to close together. Thinning is necessary and this task should be tackled as soon as the plants are large enough to handle. The soil should be moist, so if necessary gently water. Hold down the soil around the unwanted seedling with one hand and pull it up with the other. If the seedlings are to close together to allow this method, nip off the top growth of the unwanted plants. After thinning, firm the soil around the remaining seedlings and water gently. This thinning is often done in stages until the final spacing is reached. Transplanting Transplanting involves moving seedlings to their permanent home where they will grow to maturity. These transplants may have been raised in a seed bed in the garden, brought from a garden centre or grown indoors in pots or trays. It is a temptation to use thinning and plant them elsewhere, but transplanting is not suitable for all vegetables. It

is firmly recommended for most members of the cabbage family, acceptable for some popular crops such as peas and beans but definitely not recommended for many others such as lettuce and root crops. Water both the seedlings and the site where they are to be grown on the day before transplanting. Set the plants at the depth they were in the seed bed or pot. Firm the soil around the plants and water in to settle the roots. Water again if there is a dry spell after planting. Transplanting is a vital time in a plants life and choosing the right time is important. Cold, wet soil can be fatal and so can cold spells for half hardy vegetables. Mulching Mulching is an in season method of manuring. A 3-5cm layer of well rotted manure or leaf mould is spread between the young plants once they are established in the spring. The mulch reduces water loss, increases nutrient content, improves soil structure and helps to suppress weeds. Before application cultivate and water the surface so that it will be moist, weed free and friable. Watering Dryness of the soil around the roots
is one of the most serious problems the vegetable grower may have to face. The lack of water during a prolonged dry spell can result in a small crop or even no crop at all. In addition heavy rain following this period of drought results in the splitting of tomatoes and roots. The answer is to ensure the soil around the roots is not allowed to become dry. The first step is to incorporate adequate organic matter into the soil which increases water retention. Next, make sure that the top 20cm of the soil is thoroughly moist but not waterlogged at sowing or planting time. Finally, put down a mulch in late spring. You now have done all you can to ensure a good moisture reserve in your soil, the rest is up to the weather. If there is a prolonged dry spell then watering will be necessary, especially for tomatoes, marrows, beans, peas and onions. The rule is to water the soil gently and thoroughly every 3-7 days when the weather is dry during the critical period. This is the time between flowering and full pod development for peas and beans, and from seedling to maturity for leaf crops. Apply 10 litres per sq m when overall overall watering. Water slowly and

close to the base of the plants and try to water in the morning rather than midday or evening. For smaller lots a watering can is often ok, but when the plot is larger then perhaps the use of a lay flat perforated tubing is best suited for the job. Feeding A number of chemical elements are essential for plant growth. Three are required in relatively large amounts, nitrogen for leaf growth, phosphorus for root development and potash for strengthening resistance to disease and poor growing conditions. A compound fertilizer contains all three of these major elements and a general purpose fertilizer has these elements in roughly equal amounts. There are a number of other elements which are required in very small amounts, the trace elements. Shortage of molybdenum, boron etc can cause problems in specific vegetables, but trace element deficiency disorders are rare. High yield vegetables however are a drain on the soils reserves of nitrogen, phosphorus and potash which means that feeding is generally necessary, but manure or fertilizer is the age old question asked. Actually there is nothing to argue about as both are required in equal amounts.

One of the most important reasons for fertilizers is to provide a base dressing just before planting or sowing. Use a general purpose product such as Growmore, but for crops that have a long growing season a second or third top dressing maybe required. Remember when applying a fertilizer make sure you do not get any on the plants leaves. As a time saving alternative you can now use a slow release fertilizer which steadily releases the nutrients in the soil over around 6 months. Weeding Weeds give the plot an untidy appearance, but the real problem is that they compete for space, food, light and water and in addition they may also harbor pests and disease. There is now miracle cure and there is a number of tasks you will need to do. The first one begins before the crop is sown at digging time when you need to remove all roots of perennial weeds you can find and bury small annual weeds completely by inverting each spadeful of soil. Additional weeds will appear among the plants however well you cleared the weeds previously so regular weeding will be required throughout the crops growing season. Harvesting
Many gardeners aim to produce giant vegetables to match the ones they see on show benches, and you may therefore be surprised at some of the harvesting sixes recommended. Turnips the size of golf balls or carrots no longer than your finger although not economical for the farmer are the sizes for the best flavour. Not all vegetables are best picked early and the flavor of Swedes and celery does not decline with age. With some crops such as marrows, cucumbers, peas and beans it is essential to pick regularly as just a few ripe fruits or pods left on a plant can bring cropping to an end. Before you begin to harvest your crops always learn the best methods to collect your bounty as carelessly tearing off pods or pulling out roots by their foliage can damage the plant or even leave part of the plant behind. Storing Nearly all vegetables can be kept for a few days or even a week or two in the refrigerator, but there will be times when long term storage will be necessary. With beans there is always a sudden glut, and it is far better to pick them at the tender stage for storage rather than trying
35
Gardens to extend the harvest period to the time when they will become tough and stringy. Before the deep freeze storage methods had to be devised so that a winter supply of vegetables could be provided. Peas and beans were dried and shelled. Onions and cabbages were hung up in bags or laid out on open trays. Runner beans were salted, onions and beetroots were pickled in vinegar. Today the freezer has transformed the storage method, meaning nowadays even the leafy vegetables which previously could not be stored can now be kept satisfactorily. The routine is to blanch, cool, drain and then freeze. Blanching involves immersion in boiling water approximately 100gm to a litre if water. Bring quickly back to the boil and continue for the recommended time of 2-5 minutes. After blanching immerse into ice cold water and
drain thoroughly before freezing. Always use freezer grade plastic bags or other containers and remember to exclude as much air as possible before sealing. Finally main crop root crops are generally lifted for indoors storage and kept in a frost free dry area in boxes or bags. For some though the vegetable plot can act as the vegetable store such as swedes and turnips and be lifted as required. Well those are the basics that you'll need to become a vegetable grower at home, but remember to plan your plot before hand and choose your vegetables that suit your growing environment. In the next few issues I will be concentrating on individual vegetables and how to grow and the options of varieties.

Growing in small spaces Geojardim offer a solution to those wishing to grow your own vegetables and herbs in smaller gardens or on a terrace!
N
ot all of us have the space to have a vegetable patch. The verticle mini garden (left) gives you the opportunity to have your own fresh, home grown vegetables and herbs, in a fraction of the space required for a vegetable patch. Anything from Rocket, Basil, Strawberries, Parsley, Corriander, Mint, Thyme or Spinach. A vegetable trough (right) will enable you to grow a variety of vegetables such as Onions, Garlic, Watercress, Carrots, Cherry Tomatoes, Peppers, Aubergene and even Watermelon! These two great solutions offer huge advantages over a regular vegetable patch. You will use less water, have no weeds to tackle, no digging and there's also the huge benefit of not having to bend or kneel to tend your garden. It's also the perfect way to encourage children to learn about how things grow, and to eat more healthy food. With the current trend being 'organic', Geojardim can offer Bio soil and fertilizer for only 20% more than the price of synthetic! Protecting Your Savings
By Gavin Scott, Senior Partner, Blevins Franks
S
ince the Cyprus banking hit the headlines in March, we have been getting even more enquiries from people concerned about the safety of their bank deposits. Under an EU Directive, all European countries have a guarantee scheme to refund bank depositors up to €100,000 should a bank fail. In Portugal we have the Fundo de Garantia de Depósitos. If you have savings above €100,000 the excess may be lost, though you may receive additional funds following any distribution of assets as part of the insolvency process. In Cyprus the situation is a little different. The initial plan to tax even accounts under €100,000 was thankfully rejected, and European leaders have since emphasised that savings under €100,000 should always be protected. However, deposits over €100,000 in the country’s two largest banks will suffer heavy losses, quite possibly 50% or even more! Those who lost money in the Icelandic
38
banking collapse in 2008 learned this lesson the hard way, but for many other people the threat had receded. You know it can happen, but do not really expect it to. The Cyprus disaster is a stark reminder that it can. So what can you do to protect your savings? Remember that cash is not a ‘risk free’ asset. Besides the possibility of institutional failure (what has effectively happened in Cyprus), interest rates have been at historic lows for years and inflation has been eroding the value of bank deposits. The UK action group, Save our Savers, calculated that since the Sterling base rate was cut to 0.5%, UK savers have lost £220 billion through reduced interest and the effects of inflation. This, they say, is an extraordinary haircut of 20% of the entire value of cash savings. I would advise against keeping more than €100,000 in one banking group. Note that the compensation limit in the Channel Islands and Isle of Man is lower at £50,000, and they have a cap on the amount they will pay out.

It has always been very important to diversify your investable capital over different assets. This reduces risk. You need to think of the cash as an investment asset in the same way as shares, bonds and property, and have suitable diversification to spread the risk. Finally, when you deposit money in the bank it forms part of the bank’s balance sheet. Seek advice on alternative arrangements where you can “ring-fence” your assets from the institution holding them, so that if it fails, your money is protected. As always, your investment decisions, whether to invest in shares, cash, or anything else, should be based on your personal objectives, circumstances, time horizon and risk tolerance. T
he submission of the IRS tax return for 2012 has started in March 2013 for all taxpayers with incomes of category A (working for others) and / or category H (Pensions). The remaining taxpayers with incomes from other categories even if they accumulate income in categories A and / or class H must deliver the statement of income during the month of May. This means that sole traders or residents with a foreign income need to deliver their Tax Return in May for any earnings from January to December 2012. Although traditionally the Portuguese leave everything for the last minute we strongly advise our customers to prepare everything and offer some tips, to complete this process smoothly: Make sure you and your partner have a password to access the Tax Portal. If you do not have one, you can request a new one, which in average takes 5 days to be received; Gather a copy of your passport or id and Fiscal Number (NIF) for you, your partner and any dependents you may have;
IRS Tax Return 2012
Gather all documents that can be used to reduce your tax bill, such as medical or chemist receipts, invoices, statements for your insurances, investments and mortgage, rental receipts, etc; Gather the statements of income and withholding taxes; And remember Keep all documents for at least 10 years. If you have sold a property in 2012, please make sure you have copies of the deeds (for the purchase and for the sale) and also any invoices for the real estate commission for the sale and any improvements that you made to your property. These can be deducted against any capital gain tax. If you have a resident status but your income was earned abroad, you have to deliver along with the tax return the ‘J’ Annex which discriminates the values received abroad. There are taxation agreements in place between Portugal and several countries to avoid double taxation, so the impact this will have on your IRS depends primarily on two things: If there is a double taxation agreement between countries, and if there is, if the average rates of IRS
are similar; If it was made withholding any tax in your country. Normally the payment of any extra tax in Portugal for these incomes can be avoided by completing a form that needs to be stamped in the tax department of your country, and delivered here in Portugal, to prove that the tax was already paid at source. The Tax Department services check back later for withholdings, and type of income for which is based on the country or countries where this was earned, and if all is well, there is no tax on this income. If withholding at a rate lower than the national level, an adjustment is made and the income taxed at a rate that reflects these differences. Also as the tax period in your country might be different than Portugal (here is from January to December) make sure you have a statement to show the income and the tax withheld on these. We can assist you with all this bureaucracy, please feel free to contact us for a chat and avoid any late submission fines. Ricardo Chaves

Environment More than €100m to be spent on protecting Portugal’s coast
By 2015, €106 million is to be invested in protecting the Portuguese coastline, €79 million of which from EU funding through protocols between the Government and the Polis & Portuguese Environment Agency societies.

ccording to the Government, this is the “biggest investment package ever to protect and improve Portugal’s shoreline using EU funds.” During a ceremony held to celebrate the signing of the protocol, António Almeida Henriques, Assistant Secretary of Economy and Regional Development, said that through the investment “there are the conditions to double the support for Portugal’s coastal protection and triple the dimension of coastline that benefits from it.” Assunção Cristas, Portuguese Minister for Agriculture, Sea, Environment and Spatial Planning, explained that ten contracts have been signed with Polis Litoral (coastal protection) societies including Costa da Caparica, which requires a more specific intervention, as well as with the Portuguese Environment Agency (APA). Of the overall investment, €75 million will be allocated to the Polis Litoral societies and €31 million will go to the APA, “the project’s owner.” “Today we have, in fact, everything ready not only from a planning and monitoring point of view, but also from a financing point of view, which is the essential part”, she commented. In Minister Assunção’s opinion, the work involved can be carried out and completed by 2015 and will provide “a massive advance in coastal protection.” A financing contract for the northern hydrographical region secured more than €8.3 million for that area, which will cover the rehabilitation of protection mechanisms adjacent to Ponta da Gafa and Mindelo-Vila do Conde as well as integrated protection systems. More than €6.2 million is to be invested in the central hydrographical region and foresees, for example, the protection and stabilisation of the beach dunes in Cortegaça and the improvement of protective barriers along Esmoriz, Cortegaça and Furadouro. In excess of €8.1 million has been allocated to the Tejo, Oeste and Alentejo hydrographical regions, where cliffs to the north and south of Azenhas do Mar beach will be made stable, and an intervention plan is to be drawn up for Adraga beach. And in the Algarve more than €5.3 has been put aside for projects including the artificial subsistence of the D. Ana, Carvoeiro, Benagil, Nova, Cova Redonda, Castelo and Coelha beaches. Regarding the Polis urban revamp and environmental improvement programmes, almost €17 million will be
40
injected into the northern stretch of coast to carry out 22 interventions including renovations, the protection of dune systems and the renaturalisation of degraded natural areas. €22.9 million is to finance 25 interventions in and around the Ria de Aveiro; €1.33 million has been set aside for projects in Costa da Caparica, and €11.4 million has been allocated to the south east Alentejo, to replenish natural areas and repair and protect its stretch of coast. In the Algarve the overall amount destined for the Ria Formosa is in excess of €22.6 million, to be spent on creating corrective measures for superficial erosion, the restructuring and improving of barrier islands and terrestrial spaces, as well as on renaturalisation, the artificial subsistence of beaches and the recuperation of dunes and lagoons.

All the latest local sports news from Chris Wright.
wo successive home defeats to Benfica and V.Guimarães have left Olhanense needing a miracle if they are to avoid relegation to the 2nd Division. A capacity crowd of nearly six thousand packed into the José Arcanjo Stadium, Olhão to see champions elect Benfica record an eighth consecutive victory in their relentless surge towards the league title. Olhanense, beset by financial and injury worries, were missing six regulars and manager Manuel Cajuda fielded a defensive line-up in the hope of containing a Benfica team that had beaten Newcastle United 3-1 a few days earlier in the UEFA Europa League. The visitors included eight internationals in their starting eleven but only one player of Portuguese nationality. Olhanense fought hard and were happy to be level at the break but it was no surprise when Benfica took the lead seven minutes into the
second-half. Salvio showed his class as he fired a firm right-foot shot low into the corner of the net from twenty yards. Matic doubled the score with a thumping low shot from outside the box. Jander, the one bright spark in the home side, beat three Benfica players before blazing his shot over the bar but this was the only real effort from Olhanense as they struggled to contain their illustrious visitors. Two weeks later and Olhanense sank to their fifth successive home defeat, this time at the hands of V.Guimarães. The home side should have been at least two goals to the good inside the first twenty minutes as Leandro, Rui Duarte and Targino missed golden opportunities. Soudani scored twice for the visitors shortly before the interval to add put nails in the Olhanense coffin. The game sprung to life when veteran Olhanense striker Djalmir entertained the fray on the hour mark. Within a minute he
had reduced the arrears by heading home Babanco’s curling centre. The raucous crowd spurred the team on and how Djaniny failed to level the score on seventy minutes, only he will know, as he ballooned the ball over the bar from three yards! With the clock ticking down Evandro Brandão replaced Vasco Fernandes and in the fourth minute of stoppage time it looked as if Evandro Brandão had levelled the score. But the referee’s assistant Pedro Ribeiro raised his flag and the goal was disallowed - TV replays showed that the player was clearly onside. There was mayhem at the final whistle as players and officials surrounded the referee. Olhanense manager Manuel Cajuda was openly critical of the officials at the subsequent press conference. The last game of the season on the weekend of the 18th/19th May is at home to Maritimo from Madeira. Chris Wright

ll parties involved in the election for control of Sporting Clube Olhanense for the next two years have agreed to a postponement until mid May. This agreement was brokered by the president of Olhão Council, Francisco Leal, and chairman of the Olhanense General Assembly, Filipe Ramires. Candidates who have submitted their names are former club officer Miguel Bento Ferreira and solicitor André Santos Pereira. The current president Isidoro Sousa, who has been in office for six years, has not yet publicly stated whether or not he will stand again. Much depends on whether the current financial problems can be overcome.

A big thank you.
fter a long cold winter a two week break from chilly Greenford, Middlesex was just the tonic my mother-in-law Irene Bridges needed. As President of the Springfield Bowls Club in Ealing, West London, she was keen to get in some practice before the new season gets underway. David Reilly and the members of Pedras Lawn Bowls Club, Cabanas
came to the rescue and made her very welcome as she enjoyed two sessions under the azure blue sky of the Algarve. As Irene approached her 87th birthday at the end of April I felt it was time she attended her first ever live football game. As the night of the big game against V.Guimarães approached Irene was getting a little nervous but all her misgivings were soon dispelled as the fans gave her a warm reception and presented her with a new Olhanense ’Gorilas’ Expat scarf. Irene said, “I’ve had a wonderful time and everyone has been so kind. I would like to thank everyone at the bowls club and SC Olhanense who made me so welcome.” (From left) Barbara Hisketh, Irene Bridges & daughter Christine Wright, Mike Wreford with the new 'Gorilas' Expat scarf

eyenoord manager and former Barcelona star Ronald Koeman took time-out from a short break in the Algarve to watch the Olhanense match against Benfica. Koeman managed Benfica in 2005/6 but will be better remembered for his powerful rightfooted free-kicks and dead-ball ability. it was from a free-kick that he scored Barcelona's winning goal in the 1992 European Cup Final. His nickname while playing for Barcelona was Tintin, due to his physical similarity with Hergé's fictional character. Ronald Koeman currently holds the record for twenty-five consecutive successful penalty conversions in Spain’s La Liga. He also represented his nation in two World Cups and picked up a total of seventy-eight caps for The Netherlands scoring fourteen goals.
