Welcome...

...to my favourite month of the year and to your bumper September issue. Like a switch, the first day of September turns off the traffic, the queues at the supermarket and even the sun turns down a degree or two. It's when home turns back to normal, and I love it! In this issue we visit Tavira's Camera Obscura in the Tower of Tavira. Most of us have seen it, but do you really know what's in there? If you haven't tried it, I can recomend it for sure! We introduce the family who have created a place for locals and tourist to meet, the 'Hub' of Santa Rita, take a look around the brand new Casa Das Portas, a beautiful gift shop in Tavira, and also bring news of Swedish interior designer Kristina Dolven working closely with James & Valentina. All this along with our regular Finance, Gardening, Sport and Health articles. Have a great month, I hope you enjoy this issue. Editor

Dragon 'in to' the Algarve

D

uncan Bannatyne OBE is arguably best known for his role as a business angel on the hit BBC series Dragon’s Den. The Scottish entrepreneur recently shifted some of his focus to the Algarve, and after investing in real estate, is already making the region a home away from home. Having spent many years living in Cannes on the French Riviera, Bannatyne says he sat down one day “and Googled the Algarve.” While he liked what he saw, he says it took him a while to make up his mind, eventually deciding that his place in the sun would be a sea-front villa at the Vale do Lobo resort in Almancil.

R

Eastern Algarve to get more touristic promotion

egional tourism boss Desidério Silva went on an official visit to the municipality of Castro Marim. Accompanied by the mayor and deputy mayor of Castro Marim Francisco Amaral and Filomena Sintra, the president of the regional tourism board (RTA) toured some of the best-known developments, including Eurotel Altura Golf & Beach Resort, Castro Marim Golfe & Country Club, Praia Verde Boutique HOTEL AND Verdelago - still under construction. Silva said he was impressed by what he saw and that the RTA will now start focusing on the Eastern Algarve as it “deserves more promotion”.

UK producers seek struggling Algarve guesthouses

T

wofour, a television production company from the UK, is currently looking for struggling hotels in the Algarve to feature in one of Channel 5’s longest-running series ‘The Hotel Inspector’. The company says it is “keen to hear from any British expats running hotels, bed and breakfasts or guest houses in the Algarve”.

For those unfamiliar with the series, ‘The Hotel Inspector’ sees a celebrated hotelier visit struggling hotels – be it from low occupancy, low income, dated décor or bad reviews – to turn them around and get them back on track. The show, which is currently hosted by renowned British hotelier Alex Polizzi, has been airing since 2005 on Channel 5 in the UK as well as other

networks around the world. “It’s a real chance for hoteliers to gain invaluable advice and promote their hotel to a UK audience of millions, as well as other audiences abroad,” says Joe Norris from Twofour. Twofour will be accepting applications for the remainder of the year. 0044 01752 727 677, joe.norris@twofour.co.uk

Health Duarte Arrais from Fisioclube Fuzeta.tells us all about Biopuncture

Biopuncture

B

iopuncture is a therapy whereby specific body locations are injected with biologically active substances which are physiologically regulating. These substances are used to treat pain, swelling, inflammation and toxin accumulation, among other problems. Most injections cause only minor discomfort because they are very shallow, given just under the skin or into the muscle. What kinds of products are injected? Products commonly used in Biopuncture are, for example arnica, Echinacea, and chamomile. Arnica is used for muscle pain and Echinacea is used to boost your body’s immune system. Biopuncturists usually inject a mixture of natural products. Traumeel for example is used for inflammation in the setting of sports injuries and inflammation. Zeel is used for chronic joint pain. Spascupreel is used for muscle spasms/cramps. Lymphomyosot is utilized for lymphatic drainage in chronically swollen or congested tissues. These products are combined with a local anesthetic medicine like lidocaine. Are products safe for me? The solutions are not in high concentration. They contain diluted products. Therefore, toxic side effects are very unlikely. The medications used in Biopuncture are manufactured by companies that guarantee the production quality of their products. Most of the solutions are made in Germany, under strict quality control regulations. Clinical studies on thousands of patients have confirmed the safety of solutions like Traumeel and Zeel. What is a “detox” treatment? In addition to treating painful areas,

10

detoxification of the body is one of the keys to success. Detoxification refers to “cleaning the body” of toxins that may have accumulated in your body, for example from the environment, poor nutrition, certain medications, smoking or alcohol use. These toxins can interfere with your body’s normal healing response and optimal functioning of your immune system. They can disturb the reflex responses of your nervous system. Elimination of these toxins is important, particularly in the case of chronic pain, but also in cases of optimizing peak performance. Some injections work specifically on the liver, kidney and/ or lymphatic system. Improving the function of the lymphatic system with Lymphomyosot is considered very important in Biopuncture. Can Biopuncture be combined with other treatments? Some people believe that one has to stop conventional treatments when choosing natural medicine, this is not true. For many patients it may be best to combine treatments. When you are being treated with Biopuncture, you can continue the medications you already take. Your treating MD can discuss the specifics of your situation with you. For orthopedic problems, it is often recommended that patients receive physical therapy or exercise regularly to achieve optimal results. Often patients are in a very weakened and deconditioned state and they benefit tremendously from a progressive strengthening program. Biopuncture can also be combined with chiropractic, osteopathic manipulation and other techniques. Often nutritional status is a key component to recovery. Your physician may inquire about your diet and supplements regime to optimize healing.

Conclusion Biopuncture is a safe and effective technique in complementary and integrative medicine. It uses biotherapeutic injections to stimulate the natural self-healing capacities of your body. It is worth considering if it can help with your personal health problems. Consult your medical professional for more information about Biopuncture. Improve your quality of life, come learn about this new technique at Fisioclube, Fuseta.

Always improving, Casa Das Portas re-locates its first shop to the perfect location.

Casa das Portas opens

T

he Roman Bridge in Tavira is one of the most impressive features in the town and at the end you will find Casa das Portas (The house of doors). Jane Gibbin the proprietor has lived in Tavira since 2002. She had a fascination for some of the marvellous old doors that were rapidly disappearing from the town as they fell into disrepair. Jane decided to use her talent for photography and the love of small architectural details and capture them. She wanted to use her hobby to preserve these treasures. These images were an immediate success both with the local community and tourists

and are now limited prints and mounted canvas creating extraordinary images of the town. Jane is now thrilled that they have recently opened their new shop a few yards away in the alleyway adjacent to the bridge, towards the restaurants. Both shops house a magnificent array of unique gifts from both Portugal and around the world. There are of course the wonderful pictures of the doors, prints and canvas together with soft furnishings for your home. An abundance of jewellery, necklaces made from coconut shell from the Philippines, pottery hand painted in South Africa, as well as soft toys hand knitted by a woman’s project in rural Kenya.

D

iscover the city from the unique and extraordinary attraction CAMERA OBSCURA. Experience the principal law of optics which created the basics of photography and the possibility to have a breathtaking view over the roofs of charming Tavira. The old water tower was built and opened in 1931 to supply water to the whole city. Although it had not not been used for a long time, it has always been a charismatic and extraordinary building standing tall over the city. Renovating the tower and converting its empty water

www.eastalgarvemag.com

reservoir into a Camera Obscura room was the brain child of Clive Jackson and his family who came to live in the East Algarve over 20 years ago. Clive, who always had an interest in astronomy, took the opportunity to take charge of the pioneer project and it was renovated and converted into a point of cultural interest and a unique tourist attraction over 10 years ago. It is now very proud to hold the Trip Advisor award for excellence for 2014 and is one of the top tourist attractions in the area. The tower of Tavira is the only camera obscura in the Algarve. Offering a splendid and tremendous view over the whole city, it is like a 360 degree voyage above the cultural and

17

historical heritage of Tavira. Up to 15 people can attend each session, which is accompanied by a guide who describes and explains the monuments, the culture and the history of this wonderful city. You will discover the city in a very different way, 100 meters above sea level and from the camera you will see the hustle and bustle of the city in real time. Enjoy a lively panoramic view over the whole city and its surroundings. Based on a quite simple optic principle, It is composed of a rotating mirror and two magnifying glasses (lenses) fixed to the end of a tube which is attached to the apex of the roof of the water tower. It is a kind of periscope, which catches the live images of the city and its surroundings and sends them to the inside of the tower onto a horizontal screen, which has a diameter of two meters. Through a window the light gets in, falls onto the mirror, passes the lenses and reflects the image onto the

18

screen. In real time the CAMARA OBSCURA sends you on a 360 degree voyage, showing you everything that happens outside the water tower. We would highly recommend you visit this unique and interesting attraction, open to the public from 10am until 5pm. Taking just 15 minutes your guide will answer any questions you may have, there is easy access for wheelchairs and group discounts for parties of more than 10 people as well as reductions for visitors over 65 and students. Speaking Portuguese, English, German and French and at amazing value for money at just 3.50euros per person you can look forward to a warm welcome and very interesting tour. Many thanks we thoroughly enjoyed our visit. For more details contact www.cdepa.pt or telephone +351281321754

The HUB of Santa Rita

Meet Robert, Stacey and their young family who are helping to bring locals, expats and tourists together at the 'Hub' cafe.

R

elatively new to the small and charming village of Santa Rita, Vila Nova De Cacela, we were delighted to be invited to the new literal “HUB of the village, by owners Robert and Stacey. Both originally from Putney in London, the family holidayed in nearby Cabanas for the 1st time back in 1994. Loving the area they had visited every year since then and had always thought that one day they would like to settle with their family. Robert and Stacey explained that as a team they have renovated buildings as well as a 200 year old farmhouse in the Loire

20

Valley which had been home to them for many years. In search of a drier climate and a continuation for their business, they wanted to also feel part of the community and help to re-generate an area. Santa Rita was to become their home and they have very proudly begun to help the locals with renovations and ideas for the village’s future. Santa Rita is a picturesque village between Tavira and Vila Real Santo Antonio, just a few kilometers from the main E125 and close to the beautiful beach at Manta Rota, five golf courses and just a 10 minute drive to the Spanish border. The Hub, Robert and Stacey

explained, came about as part of their ongoing business Casas de Villagio, a successful rental property business which boasts 4 houses in the village as well as one in France. Casas Villagio as well as The Hub are both located in the heart of the village The new cafe bar is a very welcoming fun place for all ages and has been open from mid June to serve locals and tourists. Children can also enjoy the games area with modern gaming consoles, while adults love the large mural on the depicting scenes of the Eastern Algarve. They cater for everyone. As well as the cosy modern bar area there is also plenty of seating outside on the sunny terrace.

www.eastalgarvemag.com

The hub, is the point of connection for all local events, brochures information etc and is also a collection point for keys and acts as a friendly reception for Casas Villagio's clients. All guests booked with Casas Villagio or Homeaway sites will receive a discount card for beverages at The Hub during the evening. Their properties for holiday rentals are in the village and the homes range from two to five bedrooms. All have recently been lovingly restored to their former glory. Both Robert and Stacey have used their talents to re generate the village that they love and are now very much a part of the community.

www.eastalgarvemag.com

Why not join them for a snack and enjoy a cold beverage? They plan to continue their hard work, have soup and traditional Portuguese stews and coffee mornings in the winter months and have approached the Camera to organise a music festival and markets to continue to bring new life and fun to the village. Their resident artist Herbert can be seen creating an attractive mural for clients to enjoy. A true family concern and now with very many close friends in the village and area, Billie their daughter works most days at the bar with the help of Carlos. Their younger daughter Karryanna attends school locally and

granddaughter Leyla just 16 months old is the youngest part of the team with other daughter Catherine and grandson Noah back in England. The Hub is open every day from 7.30am till late serving international drinks and light snacks. Very many thanks to Robert and Stacey a delightful couple who are making great changes to the village to keep its fabulous charm and character whilst helping the locals old and young. It was a pleasure to meet them and we wish them much continued success for the future. www.casasvillagio.com casasvillagio@gmail.com tel 925 916 607

Property advice from expert, Robert Bijker

I

f you are a homeowner interested in optimizing your rental income you should take time to analyse if you are still on track to achieve your goal. Many of you know, as a villa manager I prefer to do this during September of each year. This gives me ample time to make adjustments if and when needed, to implement them before October and be ready for next year. If you have your property advertised

on holiday letting portals you have probably noticed a decline in conversion rates due to a lower quality of inquiries. In addition, the marketplace for these portals is crowded which dilutes the interest of a potential renter over too many platforms. The initial round of consolidation in holiday rental portals has lead to higher advertising rates and not necessarily more bookings. There are many packages and

upgrades to choose from varying from bronze, silver, gold and platinum or local versus international– all with different features and limitations to geographic reach. If your only source for leads is coming from (a) portal(s), you may find that you need to spend much more money than you would like just to maintain your occupancy levels. However, you can also consider resorting to some form of guerrilla marketing and see if this

Property works for you. This would entail marketing your property on many portals for short periods of time and taking advantage of discounted offers. When the subscription is not renewed at the end of the period, you will find that after some time they send you promotional offers to sign you back on. Depending on your desired occupancy level and the number of bookings a portal generated you can decide whether to renew or not, now or in the future. There are many holiday rental portals out there. Some are more suitable to list your property than others. It all depends on the location and type of property you are marketing and the type of renters you are looking for. For a property management agent with many listings on various platforms it is much easier to identify what works and what doesn’t work. For an individual homeowner this is more difficult to find out, but not impossible. You just need more time and resources. Be careful not to overspend. Having a good marketing mix and active management of ‘early deal’ and ‘last minute’ discount scheme can make the difference between doing fine or doing great in difficult times. Multi channel marketing is a combination of traditional means of advertising in daily news papers and holiday magazines, internet marketing such as having your own website and holiday rental portals and making use of the network of contacts of a well established villa management agency. The right mix can make it work for you, but none of them by itself is the Holy Grail. If you have been relying only on one source for your bookings, the chances are the number of weeks booked in 2014 is lower than the year before. Some homeowners are reluctant to set an annual budget for the marketing of their home even though it doesn’t have to cost a fortune. A budget of Euro 400 to 600 will be more than enough, in most cases this is less than a week of rent in high season. Not investing in the marketing of your home is a bit odd. Having spent a lot of money to buy your place in the sun, then fit it out with many desirable features and furnish the property to a high standard in keeping with its luxury surroundings, you basically have gone out of your way to make your

www.eastalgarvemag.com

property attractive to renters. Except you are not telling them! If you are marketing but are not getting the results you expected, there may be other reasons. Either there is something wrong with the marketing mix or the pricing of your property. Sometimes simply changing the photos will do the trick. It is best to address this issue as soon a possible because a week of lost rental income will be lost forever, unlike the inventory in a bookstore which you can always sell or discount the very next day. With so many uses, the Carob tree has been appreciated since ancient times.

Carob Tree T

he carob tree has been grown since antiquity in most countries of the Mediterranean basin, usually in mild and dry places with poor soils. Its value was recognized by the ancient Greeks, who brought it from its native Middle East to Greece and Italy, and by the Arabs, who disseminated it along the North African coast and north into Spain and Portugal. It was spread in recent times to other Mediterraneanlike regions such as California, Arizona, Mexico, Chile and Argentina by Spaniards, to parts of Australia by Mediterranean emigrants and to South Africa and India by the English. The carob tree is an important component of the Mediterranean vegetation and its cultivation in marginal and prevailing calcareous soils of the Mediterranean region is important environmentally and

www.eastalgarvemag.com

economically. Traditionally, grafted carob trees have been inter planted with olives, grapes, almonds and barley in low intensity farming systems in most producing countries. Carob pods with their sugary pulp are a staple in the diet of farm animals and are eaten by children as snacks or by people in times of famine. However, currently the main interest is seed production for gum extraction. Kibbled pods have been shipped from producing countries to all over Europe. Because of low orchard management requirements the carob tree is suitable for parttime farming and shows potential for planting in semi-arid Mediterranean or subtropical regions. The trees are also useful as ornamentals and for landscaping, windbreaks and afforestation. Cattle can browse on leaves and the wood is suitable for fuel.

33

World production is estimated at about 310 000 t/year produced from some 200 000 ha with very variable yields depending on cultivar, region and farming practice. Spain is the leading carob producer, producing on average 135 000 t/year (MAPA 1994), followed by Italy, Portugal, Morocco, Greece, Cyprus, Turkey, Algeria and some other countries. The carob tree grows as a sclerophyllous evergreen shrub or tree up to 10 m high, with a broad semispherical crown and a thick trunk with brown rough bark and sturdy branches. Leaves are 10-20 cm long, alternate, pinnate, with or without a terminal leaflet. Leaflets are 3-7 cm long, ovate to elliptic, in 4-10 normally opposite pairs, coriaceous, dark green and shiny above, pale green beneath and finely veined with margins slightly ondulate, and tiny stipules. The leaves are sclerophyllous and have a very thick single-layered upper epidermis, the cells of which contain phenolic compounds in the large vacuoles, and stomata are present only in the lower epidermis and arranged in clusters. Carob does not shed its leaves in the autumn but only in July every second year, and it only partially renews leaves in spring

34

(April and May). The original distribution of C. siliqua is not clear as it has undergone extensive cultivation since ancient times. It is suggested that its range in the wild included Turkey, Cyprus, Syria, Lebanon, Israel, southern Jordan, Egypt, Arabia, Tunisia and Libya and that it moved westward at an early stage. Carob is believed to have been spread by the Greeks to Greece and Italy and then by the Arabs along the coast of northern Africa into the south and east of Spain, from where it migrated to the south of Portugal and the southeast of France. Its wild occurrence in the western Mediterranean is doubtful. Spontaneous carobs occur in many places around the western Mediterranean basin but they are regarded as feral derivatives of the fruit crop which probably evolved under domestication. As a food source, carob pods could be stored and transported long distances. In most of the Mediterranean region wild and naturalized carobs are distributed in more or less the same geographic and climatic belt as the cultivated. Forms of spontaneous carobs are particularly common at low altitudes along the Spanish Mediterranean

coast, southwest Spain, southern Portugal, the Balearic Islands, southeast France, the shores of southern Italy including Sicily, the Adriatic coast of Croatia, the Aegean region in Greece and Turkey, along the northern and southern ranges of the isle of Cyprus, in the islands of Malta, in the maritime belt of Lebanon and Israel, the north and south of Morocco and the coastline in Tunisia. The carob is one of the most useful native Mediterranean trees. In producing countries, carob pods have traditionally been used as animal and human food and currently the main use is the seed for gum extraction. Carob pods provide fodder for ruminants and nonruminants. In the wild, carob shelter, foliage and beans attract browsing animals. The pods contain indigestible and valuable seeds. Carob timber is hard and closegrained, and has been used to make utensils as well as fuel. Carob wood also was traditionally used to make slow-burning charcoal. Ceratonia oreothauma is extensively used for goat fodder in its native ranges. The pulp can be ground into a fine powder for use in human nutrition. Carob powder consists of 46% sugar, 7% protein and small

amounts of numerous minerals and vitamins and is thus quite nutritious. After oven-drying, the powder can be added to cakes, bread, sweets, ice creams or drinks as a flavouring. Carob powder ‘cocoa’ has advantages over chocolate in that has fewer calories and neither caffeine nor theobromine. Its flavour is not as rich as dark chocolate but resembles milk chocolate. Owing to the high sugar content of the pod and its relatively low cost, carob pulp was among the first horticultural crops used for the production of industrial alcohol by fermentation in several Mediterranean countries. In some countries, e.g. Egypt, carob syrup is a popular drink obtained by extracting carob kibbles with water. Harvesting is the major cost in carob production owing to the expensive and scarce labour in most developed countries. Manual harvesting of the pods represents 30-35%

of the total production cost for an orchard. This cost can be divided between knocking (or shaking) and collecting operations. Knocking is a traditional operation performed with thin long poles to knock down ripe pods. Manual or mechanical harvesting by trunk shakers and

manpower shakers is affected by size and growth habit of the trees, pod distribution in the branches and pod abscission. Collecting operations depend on yield, size and shape of pod, and orchard density. The main aim for new carob orchard establishment should be mechanical harvesting. Some agronomical features of the tree are important to improve mechanical harvesting of carob. In Portugal the future of the carob production is being protected by an interesting initiative to promote carob growing with the establishment of the Associaçao Interprofissional para o Desenvolvimento da Produçao e Valorizaçao da Alfarrova (AIDA) in 1985 in the Algarve, Portugal. This independent association brings together efforts of interested people and institutions involved in carob production, processing and marketing. Mark O'Shaughnessy, JF Solutions

s the peak holiday season is coming to an end, we look forward to welcoming back those who go abroad for the summer, whether to escape the hustle and bustle of the Algarve or the hot weather. With their return it would be nice to see STG/EUR return to the high 1.26’s that we saw in July and beginning of August. Over August we saw quite a bit of movement in the STG/EUR from peaking to over 1.26 to dropping back down to the 1.24’s. Incentives for Recruiting: new rules since August 2014

T

he diploma published in February 2013 that offers incentives for those companies or selfemployed individuals willing to recruit unemployed people, has been redesigned and now comes with new rules. Learn how this incentive will work from now and how it can help your company to recruit new staff. How much is the financial support? This incentive can now go up to 2,012€ and is aimed for the recruitment of people registered with the Employment Institute (IEFP) for at least six months. The incentive given to fixed-term employment contracts is 80% of the value of the IAS (the social support index, known by the acronym IAS which is currently 419.22€) this means that on a 12 month contract, the employer will receive an incentive during the first six months of the contract. In certain cases the law allows the incentive to go up to 2,515€ (100% of the IAS during 6 months) but the employee must have specific conditions, for example: • Unemployed for over 12 months

and registered at the Employment Institute; • Unemployed and less than 30 years old or older than 45 • Recipients of unemployment benefits; • Single parents, etc. If the company offers a permanent job, the amount of the incentive grows which means the employer can get a financial aid up to EUR 5,533.70€. Please note that in all these cases, the company can pre-select their own candidate or ask the IEFP to send candidates from their database. Also this incentive can increase if combined with other incentives, such as the one exempting the company on the payment of the National Insurance Contribution (TSU - Taxa Social Única), or offering a reduction, as it depends on the salary offered. This National Insurance incentive lasts for a maximum of 36 months and it also aims to fight the high unemployment rate within the young Portuguese. The reimbursement of the TSU amount can be 100% if the contract

is with no term or up to 80% if the contract is with a fixed term. In the cases where the contract is with no term (permanent contract), the total incentive cannot exceed 200€ per month, which makes a total of 3,600€ over 18 months. Requirements that the employer has to comply? Not all business employers can apply since there are requirements to meet, for example: • No tax or social security debts; • Companies cannot have wages in arrears; • Companies directors cannot have been convicted in criminal processes or in labour cases; Besides these conditions, business employers are required to provide training to workers employed under these incentives. If the training is conducted outside of normal working hours, the employee is entitled to an equivalent reduction in the respective period of work. The law also requires that contractors under this measure generate a net job creation in the employing company, in other words: companies have to increase their number of staff and

The offer is validated, the unemployment of the candidate is verified and or the unemployment centre sends candidates that meet the job criteria. The company needs to apply for this incentive within 5 working days from the signature of the employment contract. Over 70 expat fans and holidaymakers watched Olhanense against Oriental (Lisbon)

The new 'mini' Messi Ryan Gauld (Sporting) and Rodrigo (Olhanense)

BIG LOCAL DERBY BECKONS

W

All the latest sports news from Chris Wright.

ith three Algarve teams in the 2nd Division the stage is set for some tasty local derbies. The first of these takes place at the José Arcanjo Stadium, Olhão on Wednesday 1st October when Olhanense entertain local rivals SC Farense. It is eleven seasons since the clubs competed in the same league and on that occasion Olhanense were crowned champions whilst Farense were relegated and slipped into the relative obscurity of regional non-league football. This season opened with two very promising performances against Leixões (2-0) at home and Feirense (2-2) away which gave the Olhanense faithfully cause for optimism. Out of the League Cup following two defeats and two draws at the group stage will not have worried manager Antónion Conceição as he used the games to experiment with different permutations. The one highlight of the League Cup games was a wonder goal by André Pires, whose rocket of a shot against Tondela, arrowed into the top corner of the net from way outside the penalty area and is considered to be the best goal seen at the Stadium for

40

many a long season. New squad members include former SC Farense centre-back Ubay Luzardo, keepers Tiago Maia (ex-FC Porto) & Tomas Svedkauskas (on-loan from Roma), Andre Pires (on-loan from SC Braga), young Panamanian striker Jorman Aguilar (ex.Istra Pula, Croatia) and centre-forward Youssou Lo (ex. Vicenza, Italy). The much anticipated clash with a young Sporting Lisbon ’B’ team including the €3m Ryan Gauld, signed from Dundee United in the summer, saw Olhanense wearing their new striking red, black and gold kit. Unfortunately the performance on the pitch did not match their attire

E

and as early as the fourth minute the warning signs were there as Ryan Gauld saw his shot rebound off the post. Sporting took the lead when the diminutive Daniel Podence - one to watch for the future - crossed for Dramé to slot home the winning goal. The last time these teams met, ten years ago, Sporting ’B’ included Beto & João Moutinho (who represented Portuguese at the last World Cup) and José Fonte who is making a name for himself in the English Premier League with Southampton. The only other game in Olhão this month is against União Madeira on Wednesday 17th September.

Dream debut for dier

ric Dier, raised and schooled in the Algarve, has signed a fiveyear deal at Tottenham Hotspur after joining from Sporting Lisbon for €5m. The 20 year-old defender has become an instant hero with Spurs fans after scoring the only goal of the game against east London rivals West Ham. He made it two in two games with the second goal in the 4-0 demolition of QPR. Not bad for a defender who only scored once in thirty-one appearances for Sporting. England manager Roy Hodgson will be keeping a watchful eye on Dier who was born in Cheltenham and is the grandson of Ted Croker (former Secretary of the English Football Association) and great nephew of Peter Croker who played for Charlton Athletic.

History in the making

unday 7th September sees Gibraltar take on the might of Poland at the Algarve Stadium in their first ever competitive game since being admitted to UEFA last year. The European Cup qualifier is causing much excitement on The Rock as the territory gears up for its biggest ever night of football. Gibraltar has recently played two games at their ‘home stadium’ in Faro, drawing 0-0 with Slovakia and beating Malta 1-0 in June. Poland have the highly rated Robert Lewandowski leading their attack who recently signed for Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich on a reported salary of €9m a year. Another player to watch is Arsenal’s goalkeeper Szczęsny. Gibraltar are in Group D alongside Germany, Poland, Georgia, Republic of Ireland and Scotland. World Cup champions

Germany will play Gibraltar at the Algarve Stadium next June whilst the Republic of Ireland (September) and Scotland (October) travel to the Algarve later in the year. The parttimers of Gibraltar are definitely the underdogs but there is no doubt that their passion and team commitment will make them difficult opponents. The game against Poland will be Gibraltar’s biggest football occasion since they drew with Real Madrid way back in 1949.

James Alexander Gordon: voice of football results dies

O

ne of the most recognisable voices in British broadcasting, has died aged 78. Gordon read the classified football results on BBC radio for 40 years before stepping down in 2013. He retired following throat surgery after he was diagnosed with cancer. Nicknamed 'Jag' because of his initials, Gordon attracted an army of followers with his distinctive Scottish accent and unique style of delivery. He would alter his tone of voice to indicate whether a result was a home win, an away win or a draw.

Remembrance

The footballers’ battalions On 6th February 1914, author Arthur Conan Doyle made a direct appeal for footballers to volunteer and many players heeded the call.

A

special Football Battalion was formed, as part of the Middlesex Regiment, and it was later estimated that over five hundred of the battalion's original six hundred men had died. There were over 5,000 men playing professional football in Great Britain in 1914, and of those, 2,000 joined the military services. The first of the footballers' battalions was raised in Edinburgh and the 16th Royal Scots included players and supporters from Hearts, Hibernian, Falkirk and Raith Rovers where 1350 officers and men were recruited in just six days. A number of footballers received medals for bravery during World War I, including Bernard Vann who was awarded the Military Cross and Victoria Cross. Lieutenant Colonel The Reverend Bernard Vann was the only ordained clergyman of the Church of England to win the VC in the Great War as a combatant. He was also a footballer of some renown who played for Northampton Town and Derby County. Donald Simpson Bell VC played as an amateur with Crystal Palace and later for Newcastle United before signing professional forms with Bradford Park Avenue before enlisting. The citation with his VC states: ‘For most conspicuous bravery. During an attack a very heavy

42

enfilade fire was opened on the attacking company by a hostile machine gun. 2nd Lt. Bell immediately, and on his own initiative, crept up a communication trench and then rushed across the open under very heavy fire and attacked the machine gun, shooting the firer with his revolver, and destroying gun and personnel with bombs. This very brave act saved many lives and ensured the success of the attack. Five days later this very gallant officer lost his life performing a very similar act of bravery.’ In November 2010 Bell’s VC was auctioned in London and was purchased for a reported £252,000 by the Professional Footballers' Association for display at the National Football Museum in Manchester. A book on his life and that of his friend and fellow VC Captain Archie White called "A Breed Apart" by Richard Leake was published in 2008. A memorial dedicated to Bell on the spot where he lost his life at Contalmaison in the Somme is now known as Bell’s Redoubt, where in 2016 there is scheduled to be a remembrance service on the hundredth anniversary of Bell's heroism. Walter Tull was a remarkable man. He played as an inside forward for Tottenham Hotspur and Northampton Town and was

the first Afro-Caribbean/mixed heritage outfield player in the top division of English football, and the first to be commissioned as an infantry officer in the British Army. Tull was brought up in a National Children's Home orphanage in Bethnal Green, London, along with his brother, following the death of their parents. He joined Tottenham in 1909, and transferred to Northampton Town in 1911, where he made over a hundred first-team appearances. Tull served in the Footballers' Battalion of the Middlesex Regiment, and fought in the Battle of the Somme in 1916. He was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant on 30 May 1917 despite the 1914 Manual of Military Law specifically excluding "Negroes"/"Mulattos" from exercising command as officers. Tull fought in Italy in 1917–18 and was mentioned in dispatches for "gallantry and coolness" while leading his company of twenty-six men on a raiding party into enemy territory. He returned to France in 1918 and was killed in action during the Spring Offensive. In 1999, Northampton Town F.C. unveiled a memorial to Walter in a dedicated Garden of Remembrance at Sixfields Stadium. The epitaph, written by Phil Vasili, the author of ‘Colouring Over the White Line: History Of Black Footballers in

www.eastalgarvemag.com

Britain and Walter Tull, 1888–1918’, reads: Through his actions, Tull ridiculed the barriers of ignorance that tried to deny people of colour equality with their contemporaries. His life stands testament to a determination to confront those people and those obstacles that sought to diminish him and the world in which he lived. It reveals a man, though rendered breathless in his prime, whose strong heart still beats loudly. Legend has it that on Christmas Day 1915, soldiers from both sides of the trenches met up in NoMan’s-Land for a game of football. Nothing official was kept of this brief meeting on Christmas Day

so our knowledge of what took place has always been somewhat patchy. However, the death in 2001 of one of the men who took part in this match resurrected memories of the occasion. Bertie Felstead, a member of the Royal Welch Fusiliers, was the last survivor and died in July 2001 aged 106 years. He remembers that on Christmas Eve they heard the Germans in a trench singing “Silent Night”. In reply, the Royal Welch Fusiliers sang “Good King Wenceslas”. On Christmas Day, after some shouting between both trenches, he and his colleagues got out of their icy trench and greeted the Germans. Bertie Felstead recalled that the Germans probably were

already out of their trench before the British got out. “It was entirely spontaneous. It was not a game as such – more of a kick-around and a free-for-all. There could have been fifty on each side for all I know. I played because I really liked football. I don’t know how long it lasted, probably half-an-hour, and no-one was keeping score.” On 21st October 2010, the Footballers' Battalions Memorial was unveiled at Longueval, France, near Delville Wood, to commemorate those from the Footballers' Battalions who had fought and died in the Great War. ‘When the Whistle Blows: The Story of the Footballers' Battalion in the Great War’ by Andrew Riddoch & John Kemp

the Land Army who helped keep Britain fed during those difficult days, but my concern here is mostly about our grand parents whose war was World War I, also known as The Great War - The War To End All Wars. It is, of course, the 100th anniversary of the beginning of THAT war. I have seen recently, reproduced copies of newpapers of the days leading up to the outbreak of the fighting. There are photographs of young German, French and British soldiers smiling happily as

An afternoon to

they walk with their children or saying goodbye to their wives or girlfriends. Happy to serve their country - whichever side of the battlefield was theirs - completely unaware of the HELL which awaited them. My grandfather Percy 'Mick' Micklefield joined the fray in 1915. After basic training he found himself in the Dardenelles fighting the Turks who, contrary to expectations, had been well trained and equipped by the Germans, were well dug in and a ferocious opponent. Despite

43

heroic efforts the campaign was a disaster and in January 1916 the Allies abandoned the beaches and withdrew. Percy and his compatriots were transferred to The Somme. In 1918 Percy was gassed and invalided out of the army. I can only imagine the horror and carnage he saw but he doesn't seem to have been as traumatised as some of the poor souls who survived and found their way home. There were several additions to Percy and his wife Ada's family in the following years. My mother, who was born in 1919 was the first of those. For Percy, though, life was never going to be easy: there was another fight ahead. He was a miner now (not the best of occupations for someone whose lungs have been damaged by gas) and for many years fought for better pay and conditions for himself and his fellow miners. This led to him losing his job at one pit and he had to move to another area and start again. He was also buried underground twice in rock falls and survived. I'm told he bore the scars

from this but I'm not sure if they were physical or psychological. As he lay dying of lung cancer in 1964, aged 74, my cousin Avril, his granddaughter, sat up with him at night. Already on morphine, he would ask "Can you smell the gas?" She thought him down the mine, but he was probably back on The Somme. I am no expert on The First World War and like most people only have a general understanding of the course of events. The link between the assassination of the Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria and the beginning of The War has always escaped me. But German aggression and expansionism is plain enough. Germany attacked France from the east with no official declaration of war and would violate Belgian territory in order to move troops and equipment to the front. Britain was sworn to protect Belgian neutrality. The French fleet was in the Mediterranean and Britain declared that it would not leave the northen French coast open to attack and bombardment

by German warships and would defend it with all available means. So it was that war between Britain and Germany became inevitable. And so, here we are 100 years later and the Royal British Legion (East Algarve) is hosting a garden party at The Palacio de Estoi on the 4th Oct 2014 (see poster) to remember and honour all those of all nationalities who fought in the defence of freedom and democracy in that terrible war. Whatever your nationality may be, please come and join us. P.S. It seems to be little known, but a fact, that Portugal sent a force of almost 60,000 men to the French battlefields which is an astonishing achievement for such a small and relatively poor country as Portugal then was. Many of these brave men, of course, were never to return to their native soil. My Portuguese neighbour tells me that his grandfather was one of those who went to France and, like mine, fortunately, he too returned home. Written by Neil Beever

uring a round of golf you will no doubt be required to play a variety of shots from a variety of slopes with the ball occasionally finishing on an uphill or downhill slope making shot selection and execution difficult. By understanding how these uneven lies are likely to affect the flight of the ball will enable you to make the necessary adjustments in aim and club selection to produce the most accurate results. The most common tendencies from an uphill lie are pulling, chunking and underclubbing primarily due the forces of gravity attracting the player toward the low ground. To compensate for the effects of an uphill lie, these tips will help you play the shot consistently and with better results. 1 Take a stronger lofted club than you would from an even lie because the angle of the

If your shoulders are too level, you'll stick the clubhead steeply into the ground at impact. 5 Aim to the right an amount sufficient to compensate for the slope as the release is earlier due to reduced rotation of the body caused by the slope. 6 Don't swing too hard: Go at 70 or 80 percent to keep your balance.
