Old Wives’ Talestrue or false?

Does counting sheep work? Does swallowed chewing gum take seven years to digest? Are eggs constipating? Here are some answers....

S

leeping on your back encourages snoring True. Gravity pulls your tongue to the back of your throat and blocks the airways. As the air struggles to get down into the lungs your tongue vibrates up and down, which can result in a cacophony of grunts. It is far better to sleep on your side. Of course there is no guarantee you will stay in this position but it can help to start off the night lying on your side with your arms wrapped round a pillow. Copper bracelets help soothe arthritis False. Although many people with arthritis wear copper bracelets, there is no scientific evidence to support this one. Research shows people with arthritis do have enough copper in their bodies, so it is difficult to understand what effects these bangles can have, says a spokesperson for the Arthritis Research Campaign. It could be the placebo affect at work in people who report that their pain has lessened when wearing a copper bracelet. Eating boiled eggs can make you constipated False. Any high-fat, low-fibre

www.eastalgarvemag.com

food such as boiled eggs could contribute to constipation, but you would have to eat an awful lot to make you constipated. A lack of fibre and fluid in your diet, too much stress and not answering nature’s call are more common causes of constipation. Pull a grey hair out and you can expect two in its place False. You can expect to get one back but not two. It takes about three months for a new hair to grow and another three before you notice it, so if you are going grey, by the time the one you pulled out grows back a few more will have appeared nearby, making it look as if two have grown in its place. Eating spicy foods can give you an ulcer False. They may give you indigestion or acid reflux but spicy foods won’t give you an ulcer, although they may irritate one you already have. Most stomach ulcers are caused by an infection from the bacterium helicobacter pylori or by an overuse of antiinflammatory painkillers such as ibuprofen or aspirin. Sitting too close to the TV

7

Health can damage your eyesight False. Getting up close and personal with the TV screen may give you a headache or make your eyes tired, but it won't cause permanent damage to your sight. It is recommended to watch the TV with the lights on, rather than off, as watching in the dark is more likely to cause headaches and tired eye symptoms. Cloves help relieve toothache True. Cloves and clove oil contain sedative properties that can help numb the tooth temporarily. But, they warn, cloves should only be used in an emergency. ‘ If clove oil runs on to the gums it can burn them and can even lead to ulceration, which can turn out to be more painful than the toothache itself. The only answer to toothache is to book yourself into the dentist as soon as you can.’ Toothpaste can send spots packing True. Toothpaste is a great emergency measure for dabbing on a spot overnight if you've nothing else. Many toothpastes contain menthol, which cools and soothes inflammation; antibacterial agents, which can fight infection; and detergents, which can dry out spots. These ingredients are bad for skin in the long term, however. So if your skin starts to feel irritated, leave the toothpaste - and the spot – alone.

Chewing parsley gets rid of garlic breath True. Parsley has been used for thousands of years to counteract garlic breath. Parsley contains compounds that counteract the high sulphur content of garlic which causes the unpleasant odour. It may be no coincidence that many garlic recipes also contain parsley but it is not enough just to sprinkle in a teaspoon of parsley when cooking. To get the full effect you need to chew at least a sprig of fresh parsley, preferably more. Sitting on a hot radiator or cold wall gives you piles False. Neither will be very comfortable, but they won’t cause piles. Piles are normally triggered by pregnancy, or by straining as a result of constipation or childbirth and are never the consequence of temperature changes on the nether regions. Counting sheep makes you go to sleep True. Anything that is calming can help you get to sleep, and that could include counting sheep, but stick to counting the same two or three rather than going up into the hundreds as it is the regular rhythm of repetition that lulls the brain to sleep. Cleaning your ears with cotton buds can make you go deaf True. You may not realise just how easy it is to damage your ear canal

or eardrum by poking things such as a cotton bud into your ear. Earwax is part of the ear's natural protection and self-cleaning process. Wiping the outside of your ear with a facecloth should be all that's required. If you get a build-up of wax that blocks your ear you should see your GP, who can remove it safely. Chewing on bread can stop you crying when peeling onions True. The tearjerker in onions is a compound known as propanthial S-oxide, which is released as a gas during chopping. This irritates the eye and stimulates the tear ducts. Putting a slice of bread in your mouth with half of it sticking out is thought to ‘catch’ the fumes before they reach the eye. Other popular remedies include putting a silver spoon in your mouth, wearing a pair of swimming goggles and dripping some vinegar on to the chopping board before cutting the onion. Swallowed chewing gum takes seven years to digest False. It is never a good idea to swallow gum but there is no truth in this saying or in another popular belief that it sticks to your ribs. It may be indigestible but once in your stomach it loses its stickiness and is eliminated in the same way and at the same rate as other food. Sciatica A Symptom, not a disorder. Sciatica refers to pain that radiates along the path of the sciatic nerve and its branches — from your back down your buttock and leg. The sciatic nerve is the longest nerve in your body. It runs from your spinal cord to your buttock and hip area and down the back of each leg.

S

ciatica is a symptom, not a disorder. The radiating pain of sciatica signals another problem involving the nerve, such as a herniated disk. Symptoms The pain can vary widely, from a mild ache to a sharp, burning sensation or excruciating discomfort. Sometimes it may feel like a jolt or electric shock. It may be worse when you cough or sneeze, and prolonged sitting can aggravate symptoms. Usually only one lower extremity is affected. Sciatica symptoms include: Pain. It's especially likely to occur along a path from your low back to your buttock and the back of your thigh and calf. Numbness or muscle weakness along the nerve pathway in your leg or foot. In some cases, you may have pain in one part of your leg and numbness in another. Tingling or a pins-and-needles feeling, often in your toes or part of your foot.

10

Causes Your sciatic nerve branches from your spinal cord through your hips and buttocks and down the back of each leg. This nerve controls many of the muscles in your lower legs and provides feeling to your thighs, legs and feet. Sciatica may develop when a nerve root is compressed in your lower (lumbar) spine — often as a result of a herniated disk in your lower back. Disks are pads of cartilage that separate the bones (vertebrae) in your spine. Filled with a gel-like substance, they keep your spine flexible and act as shock absorbers to cushion the vertebrae when you move. If the outer covering of a disk tears (herniates), gel may seep out and press on a nerve root, causing pain in your back, leg or both. If the damaged disk is in the lower part of your back, you may also experience numbness, tingling or weakness in your buttock, leg or foot. Although a herniated disk is a

common cause of sciatic nerve pain, other conditions also can put pressure on your sciatic nerve, including: Lumbar spinal stenosis. Spinal stenosis is a narrowing of one or more areas in your spine — most often in your upper or lower back. When the narrowing occurs in the lower spine, the lumbar and sacral nerve roots may be affected. Spondylolisthesis. This condition, often the result of degenerative disk disease, occurs when one vertebra slips slightly forward over another vertebra. The displaced bone may pinch the sciatic nerve where it leaves your spine. Piriformis syndrome. The piriformis muscle starts at your lower spine and connects to each thighbone (femur). Piriformis syndrome occurs when the muscle becomes tight or goes into spasms, putting pressure on the sciatic nerve. Prolonged sitting, car accidents and falls can contribute to piriformis syndrome. These are common causes and are

easier to resolve. Spinal tumors. In the spine, tumors can occur inside the spinal cord, within the membranes (meninges) that cover the spinal cord, or in the space between the spinal cord and the vertebrae. As it grows, a tumor compresses the cord itself or the nerve roots. Trauma. A car accident, fall or blow to your spine can injure the lumbar or sacral nerve roots. Other causes. A number of problems can affect your bones, joints and muscles, all of which could potentially result in sciatic pain. Risk factors Risk factors for sciatica include health problems, lifestyle choices and inherent qualities, such as age

or race, that make it more likely you'll develop a particular condition. Major risk factors for sciatica include: Age. Age-related changes in the spine are a common cause of sciatica. You're likely to have some deterioration in the disks in your back by the time you're 40. Occupation. A job that requires you to twist your back, carry heavy loads or drive a motor vehicle for long periods makes you more prone to develop sciatica. Prolonged sitting. People who sit for prolonged periods or have a sedentary lifestyle are more likely to develop sciatica than active people are. Treatment The main objective is to discover the cause of sciatica. We often have to resort to complementary diagnostic tests such as CT or magnetic resonance to verify the cause. Most cases are called "false sciatica" - the piriform syndrome. The cause is due to small deviations from the bones of the pelvis, sacrum and lumbar vertebrae, or by a simple muscle spasm, the resolution is simpler and faster. When the cause is a small disc protrusion or herniated disc, the main

goal of treatment is decompression of the disc and realignment of the entire spine, pelvis, sacrum and lower limbs. Furthermore we must relax and stretch all the muscles responsible for these changes. In these cases the Homeopathic Mesotherapy can also help reduce nerve inflammation, relax muscles and regenerate the disc. There are an endless number of techniques and methods that can treat as the Global Postural Reeducation, Osteopathy, Physical Therapy, Vacuum Therapy, Acupuncture... Once past the acute phase and pain, it is advisable to exercise and stretch under the guidance of a qualified professional. Only in cases of severe hernias and when simple therapies fail to alleviate symptoms, surgery may be necessary. This should be considered only as a last option, since the fibrosis created by the surgery itself will again be able to compress the nerve and continue to give the same symptoms. If this is your problem, contact us. Treat yourself with qualified professionals. Do not risk it. Fisioclub, Fuzeta can help you improve your quality of life.

JESSICA fund to help renew Vila Real de Santo António

ila Real de Santo António has been granted funding to to renew the city centre in a bid to boost trade and tourism. Turismo de Portugal has signed a financing agreement for €976,300 to promote the economic revitalisation of the historic ‘Pombaline’ centre of Vila Real de Santo António, Algarve and to create an open-air shopping center.

L

The project contractors will refurbish the pedestrian streets, the installation and standardisation of signage and the refurbishment of a visitor information centre will take the project cost to €1.4 million. This is the second JESSICA fund agreement signed with Turismo de Portugal which is one of the three registered urban development fund managers.

Three people arrested for summer thefts

ast month GNR police identified six people and arrested a further three in relation to a spate of thefts and robberies that took place throughout the region this past summer. On Wednesday (19 September) GNR officers arrested a 52-year-old woman who was caught red-handed while robbing a house by the owners of the property. Police found that she had stuffed a watch and jewellery into a backpack with the intention of stealing it, worth in the region of €50,000. On Thursday last week Faro GNR arrested two young men, aged 18 and 26, who are suspected of having carried out robberies in various places throughout the region. They were picked up after a police patrol car recognised the vehicle that

they were driving in, which had been depicted in various robbery reports. The duo tried to make a getaway but the GNR unit caught up with them on the A2 motorway after they crashed into two cars driving in front of them. Fleeing the vehicle on foot the suspects tried to run away but they were eventually caught by officers, who also found that the getaway vehicle had false licence plates and had been reported stolen at the beginning of this month in Albufeira. Authorities have since linked the same vehicle with six other violent robberies carried out between 17 and 20 of this month, in Lagoa, Tavira, Carvoeiro, Ferreiras, Loulé and Vila Nova de Cacela. GNR further established that one of the men they arrested had been ref-

erenced in other incidents of theft and robbery in Faro, in June and July, and had also been in trouble for filling up at petrol stations and speeding off without paying as well as disobeying authorities, among other issues. Also Loulé GNR officers identified six youths, aged between 13 and 21, on the suspicion of them being responsible for a string of house thefts carried out in and around that county between June and August. They are also believed to be behind a number of violent robberies carried out in the Santa Bárbara de Nexe area. The GNR managed to recover property that they six had stolen, including watches, computers, musical instruments and gold, but their investigation is ongoing.

Viva Rio Introducing Viva Rio, Tavira's guesthouse offering good value, chic accommodation in the perfect location!

T

he Viva Rio is located right on the banks of the River Gilão in the historic centre of Tavira and offers a warm and friendly welcome from the delightful owners Miguel and Liliana. Their philosophy for relaxation and the general well being for all of their guests has led to tremendous success since opening in June 2011. Miguel born in Tavira, and Liliana from Faro, met whilst working in Tavira over 10 years ago. They became freelance architects and worked for the owners of the impressive building who became their friends. It had been a guesthouse years before but had fallen into disrepair. They set

14

about transforming the 8 bedrooms to the simple, clean boutique style it is today. Viva Rio rooms all have ensuite bathrooms and feature modern furnishings and simple decoration. Some have private balconies and other rooms have amazing river views. Miguel explained their desire is to make their guests feel at home and part of the “Viva Rio family”. The glorious terrace, at the top of the building is a great place where guests come together to chat, take a drink from the honesty bar and enjoy the views of the Roman Bridge and River on both sides. Their guests come from all over the world and are of all ages, many of whom have thoroughly enjoyed their stay and

returned many times, some have gone on to buy their own properties in Tavira. Miguel and Liliana plan to run workshops and activities in the future such as Yoga, Photography and Meditation in the large space adjacent to the check in area in keeping with the concept of the “human well-being” and restfulness offered to their guests. They are open year round and now offer luggage storage facility for those late departures. We wish Miguel and Liliana continued success, it was a pleasure to meet them both their passion for people and good energy is abundant. Many thanks.

The Monte Rei golf experience

T

hey say in life "You get what you pay for"! A 'round' of golf at Monte Rei is more of an experiance than a regular round of golf. Firstly, it is the only Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course in Portugal, and when the second course is completed, it will be one of the few resorts in the world to have two Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Courses. The first of the two courses "Monte Rei North", opened for play in June 2007 and already has been ranked as the number one golf course in Portugal by Golf Monthly and both number one golf course in Portugal and number 10 in Europe by Top100golfcourses.co.uk. Your green fee does not simply buy you a round of golf as on a regular golf course. You will be greeted at your car with valet parking. You then receive your course guide head to the comprehensive and extensive practice facilities designed for all aspects of the game, with the use of top quality balls. You then take to your buggy (complete with water) and enjoy a truly uniquely

16

designed course where each hole is memorable in its own right, featuring a number of water hazards as well as superb bunkering. Once your game is complete, your clubs will be cleaned and taken to your car. Once again, all this is included in your 'green fee', making playing at Monte Rei a truly unique and special experience. You are then free to enjoy the golf clubhouse set in beautifully landscaped gardens and courtyards. Designed by some of the best architects and interior designers in the world, the Clubhouse offers a welcoming haven after a day’s golf. Food and beverage on offer are of the highest quality, under the direction of Jaime Perez, formerly of El-Bulli, with four restaurants available: Vistas, Monte Rei Grill, The Veranda & The Academy CafÊ. Love shack

Introducing a family run Tea Shop, offering a huge variety of choice!

S

ão Brás de Alportel is home to Casa de Chá, Amor Perfeito, an attractive, cosy, modern, tea room and snack bar, fondly known as “The Love Shack”. We met owners Luis, his wife Tania and their two young children Rodrigo and Marisa. Their delightful Tea room has over 100 varieties of teas, from traditional loose tea leaves, as well as herbal and fruit teas. They also offer sports channel and full wi-fi connection. Both from Barreiro, near Lisbon, Luis and Tania met in 2002 and married

in 2004. The Tea room was originally Luis’s mother’s holiday home. As it had so much unused space, they decided to use the lower level to create the cafe in 2006. Now in their sixth year, as well as tea, they have an amazing choice of 23 delicious hot chocolates, such as white hot chocolate, traditional dark chocolate, or chocolate with strawberry or banana. They also offer pizzas, snacks, ice cream, and 26 types of savoury crepes, a huge choice. All this can be enjoyed on the decked outside patio or inside

with stunning views of the hills. A friendly, comfortable spot to meet with friends for something different, at very reasonable prices. Teas start from only 60c & crepes from €1.50. We hope you get a chance to visit Luis, Tania and their friendly staff Silvia and Tiberio soon.

f you own a property it is good to know your rights, especially if your property is located in the countryside where boundaries of land are not always well documented. The same is true for right of way. Today we discuss ‘adverse possession’, a way to acquire property by using/ occupying it for a period of time, by which the title of ownership changes without compensation to the actual owner. Not only individuals can be an adverse possessor, but also companies and the government. In order to acquire legal title of property owned by someone else, certain law requirements have to be met and the adverse possessor must have been using the property (or part thereof) exclusively as if he were the owner, out in the open for everyone to see and on a continuous basis, without permission of the actual owner for a period of 15 to 20 years with the intention to keep the property solely for oneself. This is not only the case for abandoned properties, but also applies to properties that are occupied by the actual owner or the owner’s tenant. Think of a neighbour who has begun using part of the land of the adjoining property. He may have built or extended a terrace, garage of other outbuilding on your land or has begun using it for farming. What can you do to prevent the unlawful use of your property? You can put up a fence or a gate. But if you are not going to be there for another 10 – 20 years, the fence may have been broken or worse, removed. You will need to visit your property from time to time to check if all is in order. If you find someone is making use of your

But if your have a good relation with the neighbour who has started using part of your land for farming, you can consider giving them permission to use the land. This has to be in writing and acknowledged by the trespasser. By claiming you are the rightful owner and acknowledgment from the trespasser, you can avoid that this person can make a successful claim to your property in the future. What may be legally permissible is not necessarily ethically right. In any case, it is better to be safe than sorry. Once adverse possession is completed, the claimant has full legal title to the property. If you have doubts about your own property rights, contact your estate agent or your lawyer in case you feel you must take legal action to protect your interests. Mango M

angoes have been cultivated in South Asia for thousands of years and reached East Asia between the fifth and fourth centuries BC. By the 10th century AD, cultivation had begun in East Africa. And in the 14th century a Moroccan traveler reported it at Mogadishu. Cultivation

came later to Brazil, the West Indies and Mexico, where an appropriate climate allows its growth. Known as the fruit of kings, mango trees have been cultivated and grafted for hundreds of years. Grafting was a 'secret' in many cultures and tasty mangoes were status symbols for the royalty only. Ancient kings would

steal limbs off each others' mango trees and bribe and kidnap the other kings' gardeners. Peasants were punished for possession of mango fruit or unauthorized cultivation of mango fruit trees. Royalty would try to surpass each other with lavish mango parties and huge gifts of perfect, ripe, delicious mango

fruits. Some of today's Indochinese awesome varieties existed many, many years ago exactly as we have them now. So where do mangos grow in Europe? Mango is not a strictly tropical tree. It grows better in areas with Subtropical climate because it needs a cooler winter for good fruiting. Mango trees do grow and fruit in many areas of Europe with a Mediterranean Climate. Some varieties fruit better than others in cold climates. Areas with Commercial Mango Production in Europe: Canary Islands (Spain) Andalucía (Spain) Sicilia (Italy) Areas where Mango Trees Grow and Fruit: Coastal Southern Portugal Coastal Southern Italy Coastal Southern Spain Coastal Greece The Southern islands such as Malta, Crete and Cyprus. Southern France. Mango trees are also grown in the Southern Mediterranean, in Northern African countries and Israel. Mango trees can be grown in pots in this country, they remain quite small and make good houseplants,

although they are unlikely to produce fruit. But they are still worth growing because they look so good. To get the best results they need to be grown outside where in time you will have your own fruit. How to grow a mango. In the middle of the mango fruit is a very large stone, the seed, which you will have to remove with a knife. This can be tricky because the stone is very slippery so be careful not to cut yourself. To get rid of the slipperiness, wash the seed in warm water and dry it on clean tissue paper. Seeds will only grow once water has soaked through their thick skins to the middle. If a seed has a thick coat, it takes longer for the water to get inside and for the seed to start growing. Mango stones are so hard that we must help the water get inside before they will grow. Using a very ripe fruit helps it get started. Rub the mango stone lightly with sandpaper. Fill a jar or bowl with water and drop the stone into it. Put the jar or bowl in a warm place and soak the stone for two weeks. Change the water every day so it doesn’t go smelly. If you notice your stone sprouting, take it out of the water and pot it up, otherwise pot it up at the end of the two weeks. Your pot will need to be about 10cm across. Make sure there are holes in the pot to let the water drain out. Fill your pot with multi-purpose compost and water it very well. Plant the stone about 3cm deep in the compost and water it again. Put it in a see-through plastic food bag and tie the ends up to keep all the moisture in and stop the stone from drying out. Put the pot in a warm place; an airing cupboard is ideal. The stone will take several weeks before it

grows, so you must check it every day. If the compost looks dry at any time, give it a little water. As soon as you see any signs of growth, remove the plastic bag, take the pot from its warm place and grow the seedling on a sunny windowsill. Mangos grow fairly quickly and will need a bigger pot frequently, especially during the first year. You can tell when it needs repotting because you will see roots growing out of the holes in the bottom of the pot. Caring for your mango. Mangos require a warm, sunny area, the warmer the better. To make the plant bushy, nip off the growing tips occasionally. This will also keep the plant smaller. Water regularly in the summer and feed it every two weeks with a general house-plant food. If your plant gets too large, you can cut it back a little in the autumn. As a Food. The mango is generally sweet, although the taste and texture of the flesh varies across cultivars, some having a soft, pulpy texture similar to an overripe plum, while the flesh of others is firmer, like a cantaloupe or avocado, or may have a fibrous texture. For consumption of unripe, pickled or cooked fruit, the mango skin may be consumed comfortably, but has potential to cause contact dermatitis of the lips, gums or tongue in susceptible people. Under-ripe mangoes can be ripened by placing them in brown paper bags. They will then keep in a plastic bag in the refrigerator for about four or five days. In ripe fruits which are commonly eaten fresh, the skin may be thicker and bitter tasting, so is typically not eaten. This tree is certainly a plant you could grow well in any garden and within a small period of time you too can enjoy the fruit of kings for yourself.

Taxing the wealthy- Is this

the way forward for Europe?

By Bill Blevins, Financial Correspondent, Blevins Franks

F

rom Germany to Greece, as the Euro crisis plays out and budget deficits prove harder to curb, governments increasingly need to raise tax revenue. Tax hikes have become all too familiar, and while some affect all taxpayers, most of the burden is being placed on those with higher incomes and/or substantial assets. “Can the rich save Europe?” ponders Handelsblatt, a Germany news-

paper, as it observes that across the EU “the race is on to come up with more creative ideas for the taxation of the rich and the super rich”. In the UK, Deputy Prime Minister and Liberal Democrat leader, Nick Clegg, has called for the introduction of a new “emergency” wealth tax, suggesting it would make those with “considerable wealth” feel as though they are making a contribution to the national effort.

www.taviraweb.com

Across the Channel, French President François Hollande has made no secret of his view that the wealthy should pay more tax and will impose a whopping 75% tax on revenues over €1 million. Here in Portugal the top rate of income tax jumped from 42% to 46.5% last year, and may go higher still. In Spain the top rate was increased from 45% to 52%. Portugal, Spain and France have all

increased taxation on bank interest over the last year or so. Other investment income, such as dividends and capital gains, has also been hit. Various countries have also imposed some sort of “solidarity tax” for top earners, as an emergency measure to collect more revenue. Last year Portugal announced a 3.5% “extraordinary tax” on all personal income over €6,700 received in 2011. This year it introduced a 2.5% surcharge on income exceeding €153,300, thereby taking the top rate of income tax up to 49%. And then there are wealth taxes. In France, under M. Hollande, wealth tax burdens are particularly high this year. In Spain the unpopular tax was effectively abolished in 2008 only to be reinstated just three years later. Could other troubled Eurozone countries like Portugal and Italy consider applying some sort of wealth tax to aid their fiscal efforts? Many of these tax rises are meant

to be temporary until the respective country reduces its budget deficit to 3%. This is proving harder than expected, so we need to prepare for higher taxes for longer. The simple fact is that in these tough fiscal times governments need more cash, and so may have little choice in the matter. Portuguese man-of-war Beware—even dead man-of-wars washed up on shore can still deliver a sting!

Type: Invertebrate Diet: Carnivore Size: Float, 12 in (30 cm) long, 5 in (12.7 cm) wide; tentacles, up to 165 ft (50 m) long Did you know? The tiny Nomeus gronovii fish is immune to the sting of the Portuguese man-of-war. It lives among the tentacles and even snacks on the stinging tendrils. Size relative to a 6-ft (2-m) man:

A

nyone unfamiliar with the biology of the venomous Portuguese man-of-war would likely mistake it for a jellyfish. Not only is it not a jellyfish, it's not even an "it," but a "they." The Portuguese man-of-war is a siphonophore, an animal made up of a colony of organisms working together. The man-of-war comprises four separate polyps. It gets its name from the uppermost polyp, a gas-filled bladder, or pneumatophore, which sits above the water and somewhat resembles an old warship at full sail. Man-ofwars are also known as bluebottles for the purple-blue color of their pneumatophores. The tentacles are the man-of-war's second organism. These long, thin tendrils can extend 165 feet (50 meters) in length below the surface, although 30 feet (10 meters) is more the average. They are covered in venom-filled nematocysts used to paralyze and kill fish and other small creatures. For humans, a man-of-war sting is excruciatingly painful, but rarely deadly. But beware— even dead man-of-wars washed up on shore can deliver a sting. Muscles in the tentacles draw prey up to a polyp containing the gastrozooids or digestive organisms. A fourth polyp contains the reproductive organisms. Man-of-wars are found, sometimes in groups of 1,000 or more, floating in warm waters throughout the world's oceans. They have no independent means of propulsion and either drift on the currents or catch the wind with their pneumatophores. To avoid threats on the surface, they can deflate their air bags and briefly submerge.

The Rules of Cricket

Sport

by Trevor Holman

have always enjoyed sport, and even as a young child I loved watching both football and cricket. My dad was for several years the assistant grounds man at Charlton Athletic Football Club, and so I had no choice but to support the club as a child, and like most men - as you grow up you continue to follow and support your original football team, despite the constant ups and downs, and to be honest even my wife can understand my love of football. However, she does seem to draw the line at watching cricket, and yesterday whilst I was watching the enthralling first day of the latest England Test Match, my wife suddenly announced that she was going to go and water the garden as watching cricket was less exciting than watching paint dry! You can imagine my shock that this wonderful sport had just been so cruelly berated by my wife, but thinking about it later I came to the obvious conclusion that she would love cricket if only she understood what was going on. Her feelings about cricket had obviously been brought on by the fact that she simply didn’t understand the rules. Therefore for the benefit of my wife, any other wives who haven’t yet totally grasped the finer points of the rules, and even for that rare man that has been deprived in his younger days by not being brought up with this superb sporting spectacle I give you: The Rules of Cricket • You have two sides, one out in the field and one in. • Each man that’s in the side that’s in goes out - and when he’s out, he comes back in and the next man goes in until he’s out. • When they are all out, the side that’s out comes in - and then the side that’s been in goes out and tries to get those coming in, out. • Sometimes you can get men still in and not out. • When a man goes out to go in, the men who are out try to get him out, and when he is out he goes in and the next man in goes out and goes in. • There are also two men called umpires who stay out all the time and they decide when the men who are in are out. • When both sides have been in and all the men have been out, and both sides have been out twice after all the men have been in, including those who are not out, that is the end of the game! You see - cricket is a very simple game at heart - so how can anyone not love it?

igh temperatures and lack of rainfall have played havoc with Olhanense’s pitch at the José Arcanjo Stadium. Extensive renovation work with new drainage being installed and large swathes of the turf being replaced has resulted in the games against FC Porto and Nacional (Madeira) being played at the Algarve Stadium, Faro. The game against champions FC Porto was a good opportunity to see how well Olhanense would fare against stronger opposition. It was a highly entertaining game and the Northerners were somewhat lucky to leave with all three points. Exciting new boy Liban Abdi gave Olhanense the lead inside thirteen minutes and it took Porto another half-hour to draw level when the impressive James lobbed home from 20 metres with Ricardo stranded. Early in the second-half the visitors took the lead when Jackson Martínez was played through and slotted the ball home. Porto looked to have the game wrapped-up when Hulk’s thunderous volley made it 3-1. However, with five minutes to go a pinpoint pass from Rui Duarte put Targino clear and he made no mistake with a clinical finish. Little did the 10,000 crowd realise that this would be Hulk’s last game for Porto before his €60m recording breaking transfer to Zenit St. Petersburg (Russia) forty-eight hours later. Two weeks later, after the break for internationals, Olhanense travelled to V.Setúbal but were disappointed to return empty handed. Reduced to ten men shortly before half-time when full-back Babanco received a second yellow card the visitors were ruing

42

earlier missed opportunities by Rui Duarte, Jander, Fernando Alexandre and Babanco. A dubious penalty, early in the second-half, handed victory to V.Setúbal when Meyong smashed home the resulting spot kick. Djaniny made his debut when he replaced David Silva and the Benfica loanee should have done better with Olhanense’s only real second-half chance.

NEW SIGNINGS Olhanense added four players to their squad just hours before the transfer window closed. Left winger José Luis Fernandez and forward Djaniny came in on loan from Benfica. Goalkeeper Rafael Bacilli (on loan from Porto) is cover for Ricardo whilst former Manchester United starlet Evandro Brandão has been signed from

Hungarian club Videoton. MOSS THE MASCOT MUGGED After the Premier Liga game between Olhanense and FC Porto a group of Olhanense fans, including Moss the Stork, were set upon by a group from Porto. They escaped with the mascot’s head, wings and several flags. The GNR police later stopped a coach on the A22 Via do Infante motorway and recovered the stolen items together with a mobile phone. Moss the Stork is a popular figure at local schools, children’s homes and hospitals. His new outfit was specially commissioned by the Olhanense Expat Supporters Group and presented to the club last year. STRANGE BUT TRUE Fifteen months ago Olhanense signed centre-back Nuno Henrique from Feirense but before the player had even pulled on the red & black striped shirt he was sold to SC Braga. Braga then loaned him back to Feirense for

Sport Braga team mate Nuno Gomes and Olhanense youth player Edinho Junior. In another strange twist to the story Blackburn Rovers boss Steve Kean admitted he had not seen his new signings play before they arrived at Ewood Park. Rovers signed six Portuguese players in the summer and the Rovers boss confirmed they have mostly been brought in by global advisor Shebby Singh. Manager Steve Kean, who speaks fluent Portuguese having played for Académica between 1988-91 said. “I have not seen them play live, Shebby was very excited about them coming and was telling me how good they were”. Olhanense will receive some money from the transfer of Henrique from Académica to Blackburn Rovers as there was a sell-on clause in his contract when he went Braga. Whilst the south coast of England was receiving a battering from high winds and torrential rain, twentynine members of the the Atherley Bowls Club from Southampton were enjoying the sunshine of the east Algarve. Staying at Pedras da Rainha Sports & Beach Resort in Cabanas de Tavira the group enjoyed many of the local leisure facilities but the highlight of the visit was the final day Bowls Tournament against Pedras Bowls Club. Must the left arm be stiff? This months top tip from resident professional at Benamor Golf, Keith Ashdown.

N

o, the left arm need not be stiff! Harry Vardon, six time Open Champion had a very bent left arm, and was certainly very accurate! When first asked what he thought of the stiff left arm he said "I always like to play against players using a stiff left arm" Even to keep it straight for every golfer is asking a lot. 'stiff' is a poor word anyway; it suggests a dead arm. In general the arm should be straight - this should be aimed at but not forced. Vardon must have found that he could not play with a straight left arm for his left arm was very much bent, almost a right angle bend (see picture). I know that keeping the left arm fully extended is taught universally today, but for many golfers it does not make the beautifully controlled back swing after all. It can also produce tennis elbow, tension and can so often encourage the shoulders to unwind before the hips. Try a swing sometime without forcing the left arm straight, it might suit you to bend the arm a little - you never know till you try. Good Golfing, Keith
