When the engine in our car suffered a major problem, we at a loss as to where to take it for repair, but Tavira’s car spares specialist Daniel Souza located near the Bombeiros sent us to “the man who serviced his car”. The garage auto Marreiros is located adjacent to the Pingo Doce supermarket in Tavira and we had always thought that it was a “boat place” as there are always boats outside and engines being repaired. We can now report that not only do they sell and service boat engines and boats but are true wizards when it comes to fixing sick and ailing car engines too. it took a little time as the problem proved to be very serious and some of the parts needed were in short supply but succeed they did and our car is now running sweetly and better than before. Our thanks go to Daniel Sousa for his recommendation and to the garage owners idalécio Catarino Marreiros and his son Paulo (who speaks english) and their team of mechanics who fixed the problem.Weareglad to say that will now be using them for all future servicing needs for our car, van and our little boats outboard engine too.

You may be wondering what alzheimer’s has to do with hearing loss. hearing loss and alzheimer’s, as well as dementia from other causes, can be intricately connected. When you think about alzheimer’s disease one of the more common problems associated with this disease is the inability (or compromised ability) to communicate. many times alzheimer’s patients in the later stages of the disease seem to be in their own world, often not responding to others or stimuli within their environment that we would expect them to notice. conversations go on without them, questions are asked but remain unanswered, in fact much of the time the alzheimer’s patient seems completely unaware that questions or discussion are even occurring in their midst. now consider for a moment what the same situation would look like with a person with moderate to severe hearing loss. Once again questions would go unanswered, conversations would remain very much one sided, and the caregiver, unless they were aware of the hearing loss, would find it difficult if not impossible to communicate with this person. now consider for a moment the person you know with alzheimer’s. do they struggle with similar communication issues as discussed here? could it be that in addition to alzheimer’s they have a problem with hearing loss? are they missing out on stimuli in their environment to keep their brain active?

When someone suffers with alzheimer’s their cognitive function is often decreased making it very difficult for them to on their own realize they have a hearing loss problem let alone communicate to rothers.esearch shows that hearing loss can significantly and negatively impact an older person’s declining cognitive dysfunction. When hearing loss and alzheimer’s are found together this person has usually been experiencing serious and varied problems from the combination of the problems that have been previously blamed solely on the alzheimer’s. the use of hearing aids along with other services decreases the alzheimer patients suffering with the following:

sTROngesT anTiOxidanT FOund in gReen Tea. in september 1997, a study concluded that green tea contains high concentrations of epigallocatechin gallate (eGcG), the strongest antioxidant. eGcG is over 100 times more effective in neutralizing free radicals than vitamin c and 25 times more powerful than vitamin e, both well-known antioxidants. antioxidants are thought to prevent cellular damage that leads to certain diseases, especially cancer. When compared to black and oolong tea it was found that green tea contained, by far, the highest active eGcG concentrations. this is because green tea is steamed immediately after it is picked, which prevents the leaves from oxidizing, thus preserving eGcG. enhanced weighT lOss
two studies have proposed drinking green tea may help you lose weight. the first study compared green tea's metabolic effect, in extract, to that of a placebo. researchers found green tea drinkers burned an additional 70 calories per day. the difference is believed to be caused by the catechins (i.e., antioxidants which enhance metabolism) in green tea. the second study, done by the university of Geneva, revealed combining caffeine and eGcG enhanced metabolic rate by 4 percent. sTROngeR bOnes a study by researchers from national cheng Kung university hospital in tainan, taiwan, suggested drinking tea may strengthen bones. tea contains fluoride and flavonoids, both of which may enhance bone strength. the study was based on 1,037 men and women, ages 30 and older, who were questioned about their tea consumption habits and given bonemineral density tests. researchers found the benefits were most noticeable in people who drank at least two cups of tea per day, for at least six years. People who habitually consumed tea for over 10 years had the highest overall bone mineral densities 6.2 percent higher than non-habitual tea drinkers. habitual tea drinkers for six to 10 years had bone mineral densities that were 2.3 percent higher than non-habitual tea drinkers. no significant differences between tea drinkers of one to five years and non-habitual tea drinkers were established.

As the weather cools and flu and cold season kicks into high gear, many people will turn to green tea as a natural method of relief. due to recent findings regarding its health benefits, this beverage's popularity has reached an all-time high. now, more than 15 million people in america alone are drinking green tea, with sales up 650 percent from 2002. it was recently reported by newcastle university that a cup a day can help prevent alzheimer’s and some cancers. Green tea is readily available in the algarve and should be thought about seriously. many people reduce their water intake over the winter months, so maybe this is the way to keep our body running smoothly.

Green tea and eGcG are natural and readily available inhibitors of tnF[alpha], a gene expression which promotes growth in cancer cells and surrounding tissue. since eGcG has also been proven to kill cultured cancer cells without causing harm to surrounding healthy cells, green tea could be beneficial not only for cancer prevention but also in the therapy and prevention of other diseases.
PReVenTiOn in april 1999, medical researchers at case Western reserve university in cleveland, Ohio, published a study reporting that drinking four or more cups of green tea per day may prevent rheumatoid arthritis, an inflammatory disease, and reduce its severity in those currently battling the rdisease.esearchers concluded the antioxidants in green tea possess not only cancer-preventing properties, but also anti-inflammatory properties. they may prevent or reduce the severity of rheumatoid arthritis symptoms, including pain, swelling, stiffness and loss of function in the joints. although further research is needed in this area, the study provides encouraging evidence of green tea's preventive effects. incReased heaRT aTTacK suRViVal RaTes researchers at beth israel deaconess medical center in boston, massachusetts, demonstrated that consumption of both black and green tea can increase longevity after a heart attack. in the study, 1,900 heart attack survivors, men and women in their 60s, were asked about their tea consumption. compared to nontea drinkers, heavy tea drinkers (i.e., those who drank 19 or more cups per week) reduced their risk of dying over the next three to four years by 44 percent. moderate drinkers (i.e., those who drank less than 14 cups per week) reduced their risk by 28 percent. heaRT disease ReducTiOn in a study presented at the 1991 international symposium on Physiological and Pharmacological effects of tea, researchers from the national defense medical college in saitama, Japan, revealed that Japanese men who were heavy green tea drinkers reduced their total serum cholesterol levels. the study involved 1,306 men ages 49 and 56 years old. a similar study of 1,371 men over age 40, released in march 1995 by the saitama cancer center, came to the same conclusions. lowering blood cholesterol is associated with preventing heart disease gareth Bullock

T his is a new venture for a gallery that is best known for exhibiting Fine art. international decorator and designer, tom compton has made each of the mirrors by hand. emulating philosophies rooted in england’s art and craft movement, tom sees no distinction between the artist who designs the frame and the craftsman who executes the work. advocated by the likes of William morris, every decorative mirror represents a high degree of ‘pleasurable labour.’ French and english damask wallpapers have been the inspiration for several of the frames. Produced in the 19th century for country homes, tom has selected patterns that show fluid forms from nature and interlacing motifs. new wood blocks have been carefully cut to print copies of the originals then incorporated into the mirror frames alongside accents of gilded paintwork and rich fabrics. historically mirrors in the middle ages were convex, small and slightly green in colour, their frames sometimes attractively finished with glass fragments. this is another decorative approach that tom chooses, employing a mosaic technique to secure ceramic pieces, splintered mirrors, polished beads, cabochons and gleaming hstones.ealso works with shells and driftwood collected from algarve beaches, producing not only mirrors but astonishing lamps, eccentric chandeliers and whole room sets. Perhaps the most extraordinary is his beach bar at Galé. collaborating with the owner of vila Joyaan exclusive boutique hotel containing the algarve’s only two star michelin restaurant – the bar is a decorative emporium adorned with items from nature, all of them combed from the beach. in the past liberty of london, conran, hermes, ballet and lacoste have employed tom’s considerable talents. the new collection of mirrors is an opportunity to own one of his handmade gems.

chat about his life and his work. after visiting his studio, home and gallery, we decided that this superb artist was worthy of the largest article we have ever run in the east algarve magazine. his home was like something straight out of homes and Gardens magazine, his studio had a hidden treasure around every corner and his gallery in tavira has the perfect variety of different types of artwork, one of which you're sure to fall in love with.

Fonseca was born in tavira and moved to santa luzia at the age of seven. his father was a barber and had shops in tavira and santa luzia. his Grandfather was a wood sculpter. Fonseca was born loving art and started drawing and painting at the tender age of two. by the age of four, it was noticed that he had a real talent for drawing and painting, and by the age of eleven, he won his first prize for his artistic work. next Fonseca started studying electro mechanics, however it soon became apparent that he had no flair for either electronics or mechanics. it was his art that shone through and he continued to win awards for it and by the age of sixteen, he had won awards both in the algarve and nationwide. these were for work using a variety of techniques and materials, such as oil, acrylics, sculptures, ceramics and tile painting. he worked for ten years alongside christian ivaldi, a famous French italian all hand

If you're planning a ride out to the lovely alcoutim, why not stop off at Odeleite as we did. it's a charming little Odeleite, village. situated amidst the beautiful algarve hills, with a stunning river marking its boundary on two sides, is a delightful patch of green in a landscape dominated by the browns of the Portugal interior. the streets are full of traditionally decorated houses and the little village church is charming. Within its white walls are some fine statues dating from the 16th and 17th centuries. a visit to the local museum is also a must. the real attraction, however, is the magnificent Odeleite dam, which not only supplies the region with water, but is a fantastic place to walk and soak up the scenery. the village of Odeleite is developed on a hillside that is
cut out of sharp slopes which determine the development of the urban center. at the foot of the hillside, hugging the village, the ribeira de Odeleite can be found, which 6 km's downstream flows into the Guadiana river. as the village's point of reference, nearby the stream is the main church of Our lady of visitation (16th century). the main traditional activities carried out in the village and a little all over the parish are basketwork, apiculture, the production of goats cheese, lacework and traditional confectionary.
the Odeleite dam, constructed between may 1992 and september 1998 is a man made lake together with it's neighbour the beliche dam, form the biggest water reservoir in the algarve. the effects of the hydraulic resources of these two dams. which are joined by a 2,950 metre tunnel, have as their objective the

municiple water supply for all the sotavento (east) area of the algarve (including loule) and the terras da Ordem. the terras da Ordem national brushwood. the name of this wooded area, with approximately 1.366ha, indicates a religious past associated with the Order of christ, a time when it belonged to the castro marim alcaiaria mor commendation. after it's extinction, the land ended up by being acquired by the state in the 60s and underwent the first forestation project with a view to recovering the fertility of it's soils and respective water reserves. With the april 1974 revolution management of this space was interupted, a new intervention commencing from 1982 onwards, which seeks not only the management of game resources but also the arboreal coverage.

A lthough this winter the algarve did not have as much rain as last year, many people will have experienced the last two weeks of January as miserable. low temperatures in combination with humidity and the occasional drizzle made it difficult for some owners to heat up their property. it re-emphasizes to pay attention to the importance of good insulation when buying a house. With more than 3000 hours of sunshine in the algarve it is easy to forget, but we do have a winter season. not all buyers realize this when they are house hunting. Who can blame them with temperatures of 20 – 30º when they are visiting Portugal. even when on a short stay in winter, the weather in the algarve compares favourably with back home. but when you are living here permanently and have acclimatized, reality sets in quickly. Good insulation is more than just having double glazing and the thermal properties of double glazing vary as well as prices. ideally when starting from scratch building your own home, you should insist on a proper damp proof course. a damp proof course is a physical barrier and prevents walls (and floors) to act like a sponge drawing water up from the ground. unfortunately many older buildings never had a damp course and worse, some newly built properties don’t have them either. Once you have rising damp in your home, it is difficult to resolve although there are various products/methods on the market. Whether you have solid or cavity walls, good wall (thermal) insulation can reduce your energy bill significantly. heat loss is measured in ‘Watts per meter squared-kelvin’ (W/m2K) and is called the u-value. Walls with a u-value of 0.35 or lower are considered to be well insulated. in January 2009 Portugal

ome varieties flower from mid-June to september. the silver foliage deserves a space on its own merit they keep themselves neat and tidy with a single annual pruning and they are relatively free from pests and disease. the final bonus is that they withstand drought extremely swell.pecies and varieties there are in excess of 50 species of lavender plants which come in a wide variety of sizes, hardiness, flowers and foliage. the main varieties widely available are discussed below. english lavender (lavandula angustifolia) size of height and spread is normally within the range 45cm to 75cm (1½ft to 2½ft). Given time these lavenders form mounds and this looks impressive when lots of them are planted together. the flowers appear from late spring right through to late summer. lavandula angustifolia is often incorrectly referred to as lavandula officinalis or vera. english lavender makes an excellent low level hedge. maintenance is simple, the massed flowers are truly glorious and the scent is spectacular. Often overlooked is the fact that lavender attracts a wide variety of insects. lavandin or dutch lavender (lavandula.x intermedia) the stems of lavandins are longer than english lavender and when mature these plants have a height and spread of about 90cm (3ft). this makes them ideal as low hedging plants. lavandula stoechas lavandula dentata these lavenders are half hardy. they are identified by the leaves which have deep "teeth" up their entire length. the flowers (bracts in truth) are unusually shaped and appear on the ends of very long lstems.avender is of southern european origin so it has a liking for warm, sunny conditions and a soil that drains well. they also prefer slightly alkaline soil. Your aim should be to mimic these conditions as much as ipossible.fyoursoil is heavy, dig in as much well-rotted compost as possible. used mushroom compost is ideal if you can get your hands on some. this will improve the drainage of the soil.
these lavenders are not so easy to grow in temperate climates such as the uK because they do not survive our wet winters very well. they produce dark purple flowers up to 4cm (1½in) long. impressive but only suitable for very free draining soils. best suited to being a specimen plant in a pot or tub where soil conditions can be closely controlled. the best time to plant lavender is in early autumn or mid-spring. simply turn the pot upside down and tap the plant out of the pot into your hand. Plant it so that it is at the same level with the soil as it was in the pot. if your soil is lacking in nutrient then feed at planting time with a general purpose liquid fertilizer. if you have normal soil there is no need to feed lavender. if the soil is dry at planting time, give the lavender some water but in normal conditions this is not trequired.ohelpthem lay down a good root system and develop foliage cut off all the flower stems after planting. another good tip is to pinch out the tops of leaf and stalks which are taller than the rest of the plant. this will encourage lavender to become bushier. allow enough room for the lavender when it is fully mature. For spreading at maturity and if planting for a hedge then subtract about 15cm (6in) from the spread at maturity, this will ensure that the hedge is evenly packed. these small bushes are very easy to care for. there are two main considerations, water and pruning. to some degree feeding will also Every garden should have a few lavender bushes.

Only water when the compost has dried out for a couple of days. do not feed lavender when planting it. each spring after that apply a general purpose liquid feed, no further feeding is required. how to prune this is simplicity itself. Firstly, do nothing for a complete year's growth. then each year after flowering has finished in autumn, cut off the top six inches of growth. it's that simple, no special techniques required at all. after about six years or so your lavender bush will start to get woody at the base and foliage will progressively only appear at the top of the plant. because lavender are so easy to propagate the best solution is to take some cuttings and grow them on for the next year. dig up the old plant and replace it with a new one. if you are one of those who simply cannot destroy a long serving plant then try to encourage new growth at the base by pruning in three stages. sTage 1 cut the foliage back by about one third in spring. this will cause the lavender to put on new bushy growth. sTage 2 When the new growth appears leave if for a month or so and then cut back that growth by half. this may well cause foliage to appear at the base. if it doesn't work, and often this the case, then all hope is lost! sTage 3 if stage 2 did work then the final step is to prune out the old growth so that it is about 5cm (2in) above the new growth. never prune into old wood which has no new growth from it. if you do this the old wood will never be productive again. how to propagate there are three methods of propagation. by cuttings, seed and clayering.uttings are the easiest method and the chances of success are high. in addition, you are guaranteed that the new plant will be exactly the same as the parent plant. the best method is to take a heel cutting in spring. this can also be done in autumn but the cutting will take longer to root. First fill the pot(s) by filling with a sandy compost. Water it so the soil is damp but not tdripping.otake a heel cutting, identify a healthy looking shoot which is about 10cm (4in) long and pull it down and

Page 34 www.eastalgarvemag.com away from the main stem. You will end up with a shoot which has a "heel" of the main stem at its base. if the heel is a bit too long then trim it up a bit with a sharp knife. dip the "heel" in hormone rooting powder or solution, make a small hole in the compost with a pencil and place the cutting in the soil with the "heel" lowermost. about 3cm (1in) of the cutting should be below the soil. Gently firm the soil down around the cutting. Keep the cuttings in a light airy position out of direct sunlight keeping the soil just moist. the lavender should show some signs of growth around 4 to 6 weeks later. if it outgrows the pot, pot into a larger one. the rooted cutting can be planted in its final position in early autumn. lavender will not grow true to the parent type when grown from seed. For this reason i do not recommend this method of ipropagation.nautumnwhen the seeds are ripe (they should be dry and black), collect them and place them in a compost filled pot and a very thin layer of compost scattered over them. Place them in a well-ventilated, warm and dark position. the seeds will take about six weeks to emerge. then treat them as cuttings and plant in their final positions the next autumn. in early autumn select a long stem and gently bend it down to ground level. Peg it onto ground with a hoop shaped piece of wire and cover with 3cm (1in) of soil. the layer will produce growth the next spring. When this has happened, sever the stem from the parent plant and pot into soil as described for heel tcuttings.ransplant them into their final position in early autumn. the plant will be an exact replica of the parent and the chances of success are high. lavender has very few pests and diseases. there is a widely held but unproven theory that lavender prevents diseases in other plants. the most evidence we have is that it does reduce the amount of greenfly and white fly. Tlev hybrid wind turbine system will increase your annual yield by more than 40% over a conven tional system. the turbine is also backed up by a solar panel, making it the world’s first hybrid electricity gen erator. how it works? developed from maglev technology used in the famous Japanese bullet trains, the bearings have a frictionless device that gives the vertical turbine significant advantages. as the weight of the blades is forced on to the bearings, the bottom permanent mag nets are repelled by the fixed top permanent magnet. this magnetic repulsion is applied to counter the weight of blades, and is 300 times more effective than mag netic attraction. this means that there are no bearings required, therefore no parts to wear out. One problem with earlier vertical wind turbines was the weight from its upper structure, increasing the friction and wear on bearings and led to a shorter lifespan. the maglev ver tical turbines do not need maintaining, they just keep spinning, friction free. domestic & industrial use. a 3Kw maglev generator, which would be less than two meters across, is sufficient to power a typical family home all year round. the uses in industry are endless. solarPanels4u are the first energy company to bring this to europe. at info@solarpanels4u.com Tel 00351 916 596359 visit www.solarpanels4u.com example rising damp

T his month i am paraphras ing a recent missive from richard russell a world renowned expert on dOW theory: “now understand this. When extreme currency de valuation occurs, stocks (the bluest of dividend-paying blue chips) can become inflation hedges. and that’s exactly what i think we’ve been seeing as the stock market pushes bhigher.ecause of the micro-dividend yield and because of divergence and be cause of non-confirmations, i’ve stayed out of the stock market. Ob viously, in retrospect, that was a mis take. but i’m changing my position on the stock market. i’m now rec ommending buying the dow in the form of the diamonds (dia). i believe the dow (but not all stocks) is being seen as a hedge against the dollar and as a safe-haven for those who perceive that the dollar as steadily losing purchasing power. in the very big picture, i believe Markets Even our Grandparents didn’t see this level of currency expansion, visible as debt, on a worldwide basis, so how can we judge what is likely to happen and how do we best protect our personal finances?
SpeCialiStS in
americans are facing one huge and daunting problem — the steady loss of their purchasing power via a de clining dollar. What we’ve been see ing is the dow rising as it adjusts to the diminishing purchasing power of the dollar. to put it simply, the dow alone (but not most stocks) has been acting like a currency hedge. conse quently, i now advise my subscribers to take a very limited position in the dow (dia) but not in broad market etFs or mutual funds. it is obvious at this point that the ma jority of americans don’t understand gold, and that they are not ready to buy gold as a hedge against the de clining dollar. but some americans do seem to understand that the best stocks may serve as a safe-haven and a bet against the fading dollar. up to now (actually ever since 1999) gold has outpaced the dow. this could be about to change. For that reason, i believe my subscribers should diversify into limited posi tions in dias rather than depend solely on gold (and silver) as hedges against the fading dollar. i might add that in other countries where their currency was severe ly devalued, their stock markets surged dramatically, and i’m talking about south Korea, argentina, ma laysia and indonesia. so there it is — my change in think ing and advice. i might add that the advice to buy the dow (dia) is backed up by my steadily bullish Pti and by the persistently bullish statistics coming out of the lowry’s studies.” end Quote. a change of thinking that i am per sonally taking note of! What he is saying is essentially that blue chip companies operate on a worldwide basis and hold their value in univer sal terms, so if the local currency fails, they are likely to rise to main tain their relative value in other cur rencies. but he is stressing blue chiP companies, the best of the ebest.ven if you do not own individual stocks, you probably have some kind of investment in your pension fund, endowment plan or some kind of unit trust Fund, so you must look at your holdings at least twice a year to rebalance your portfolio. it is not as daunting as it sounds. Ja pan, asia, emerging economies, Far east, uK, europe, blue chip, small er companies and plenty of other options. Your Financial advisor can help you, but you need to know the thinking behind their selection, just in case you have a different outlook. Just take a little time to look over the percentage of funds based in each region and the level of risk they hold. think about which areas of the world will gain or suffer from events that you see on the horizon. is there really going to be a food shortage?

Rhythm in Golf
•European tour player member 1968 - 82 •European seniors tour player/member 2003;2004;2005
New year expert tips from Benamor's resident professional, keith Ashdown.
Iknow i have said it before, but i cannot emphasise enough that good golf is a question of rhythm. a man cutting down a tree has perfect rhythm because he is thinking of only one thing-the moment of impact. the average golfers swing is so jerky because he is thinking of hands, body and feet, in fact everything but concentration on hitting through the ball.
One lady told me during a lesson that she had sixteen things to think of as she made her stroke, no wonder she was confused and missed the ball! but the swing itself must be as natural as walking. nobody when walking thinks about putting the heel on the ground first, followed by the ball of the foot and then the toe, nor of the opposite hip and shoulder coming forward. Once learnt in infancy, it is automatic. i am quite sure that when david slen Goliath he had no time to worry about the actions of his body - he had only one action in mind. You are hitting a stationary ball, giving one too much time to think. at cricket or tennis you are hitting a moving ball which is much easier as your mind is moving with the ball, i wish i could remember who wrote the following lines, however, i'm sure he or she would not mind me quoting them : "a centipede was happy until one day a toad in fun, said "Pray which leg moves after which?" this raised her doubts to such a pitch she fell exhausted in the ditch not knowing how to run" good golfing, Keith

All the latest local soccer news from Chris Wright. January, with five away games on the trot, saw the Olhanense team travel over 3,000kms in ten days as they visited desp.aves, rio ave & v.Guimarães in the far north and lisbon twice to take on benfica in cup games. a shock 3-2 defeat at 2nd division desp. aves in the bWin league cup was followed by a 5-0 defeat in the Portugal cup against benfica at the stadium of light. Olhanense young centre-back Jardel did not play due to his impending transfer to benfica. he was under contract to the brazilian football agency traffic, who placed him with Olhanense on condition that he could be sold in the transfer window. as such, Olhanense will receive just 75,000 euros for the player, although the club have also retained the right to a 20 per cent cut of any future transfer. it was then north again as Olhanense’s flagging spirits were raised when they battled hard for their first away league victory at rio ave. centre-back mauricio scored the all important goal midway through the first-half and despite a late onslaught by rio ave the visitors defence stood firm with baptista in fine form between the sticks. no such luck the following week as the team went down 1-0 at v.Guimarães. Four days later and a return to lisbon for the second game in the bWin league cup against benfica. this was the third game between the two teams inside six weeks at the estadio da luz. the league and Portuguese cup matches had ended in 2-0 and 5-0 victories for the home team, and the latest encounter between the two sides looked to be heading the same way as benfica went two goals up inside 22 minutes. Javi Garcia opened the scoring and Jara scored an excellent goal with a left foot shot on the turn from the edge of the box. but against all the odds Olhanense, who fielded a weakened team, came

Proud pigeons on parade roaring back. veteran striker djalmir pulled a goal back just before the break, and shortly before the hour mark the forward earned a penalty that rui duarte confidently dispatched to equalise. With the algarve team continuing to threaten, benfica called on the big guns, Gaitan and salvio. benfica immediately improved, with the atletico madrid loanee continuing his superb form. the attacking midfielder capped a fine cameo display by scoring the winning goal, shimmying past a couple of defenders and coolly curling a precise finish into the bottom corner of the net. a great effort from an Olhanense side that has been decimated by injuries. the heavy schedule of matches had taken its toll on the Olhanense squad with manger daúto Faquirá hard pressed to name a squad for the home game with académica who themselves were missing vital players through injury and suspension. On a cold, wet evening more akin to a british football match, both sides played open attacking football. the visitors took the lead midway through the first period when sporting lisbon loanee adrien, making his first appearance for académica, scored after the home defence failed to clear a corner. Within minutes it was 1-1 as nuno Piloto scored his second goal of the season after good work by João Gonçlaves and Jorge Gonçlaves. the decisive goal came after seventy minutes when skipper rui duarte blasted home his second penalty in three days. the 2-1 win consolidates Olhanense’s position in mid table with 22 points. Following the departure of vinicius to sp.braga and Jardel to benfica, Olhanense President isidoro sousa was quick to finalise the transfer of striker dady, from bucaspor in turkey, until the end of next season. exPaT Fans sTaR On TeleVisiOn in december, Portuguese television channel tvi spent two days filming the expat fans at the Olhanense stadium, as they prepared to travel to lisbon and during the league game against benfica. the twenty minute programme was shown nationwide on tuesday 4th January. the programme can still be seen online by putting the following into a search engine: Olhanense os gorilas and then going to tvi. big mOnTh OF FOOTball sporting lisbon visit Olhão on the weekend of the 13th/14th February whilst the following week a large turnout is expected to welcome Portimonense back to their refurbished municipal stadium in the heart of Portimão as they take on Olhanense in the algarve derby. Page 44 www.eastalgarvemag.com Sport Thousands of pigeon fanciers converged on tavira for the 38th national Pigeon exhibition. visitors from all over iberia, holland, belgium and the uK flocked to see the handsome birds as they were judged by a panel of top experts. On the saturday evening, President of the tavira câmara, Jorge botelho, hosted a Gala dinner at the hotel vila Galé albacora. in terms of participation, pigeon racing is the second most popular sporting activity in Portugal with 18,000 registered pigeon fanciers. Only football has more practising sportsmen or women. Pigeon racing in Portugal is proud to have a strong and active sense of purpose which has resulted in an increasing number of young people becoming involved. the national Federation brings together fourteen associations with 763 clubs and an estimated pigeon population of 4,000,000 birds. there are twentyfour societies in the algarve with the Faro district currently building a superb new complex of lofts and ancillary facilities. in monte Gordo purpose built lofts can be seen in the pine forest whilst in castro marim they are clearly visible as you drive along the Guadiana river. in July the pigeon fanciers of luz de tavira stage the 7th derby luzense which is open to pigeons from throughout the eu. With more than 25,000 euros in prize money the event will be keenly contested. On the 24th February a labrador dog who located improvised explosive devices while serving in helmand Province, afghanistan will be honoured by the award of the dickin medal. this is the victoria cross for animals, the highest decoration for service during wartime. the medal was instituted in 1943 and named after the Pdsa founder mrs. maria dickin mbe. For actions during the second World War, a total of fiftyfour dickin medals were awarded of which thirty-two were awarded to pigeons. the first medal was awarded to ‘White vision’ in december 1943 who was responsible for saving eleven members of the crew of a raF Flying boat that had to ditch in the sea off the hebrides. at about 8.20am one morning in October 1943 the call sign went out that the plane had ditched but bad weather hindered rescue operations and the search called off. the thick mist made location impossible and after some delay the crew released the pigeon. at about 5pm that afternoon the bird arrived at her loft with a message giving the position of the stricken plane. the search was now resumed and the entire crew was rescued. 'White vision' had flown over 60 miles of rough seas against a head wind of 25 mph and visibility of some 100metres when she was released, and only a 300metres visibility when she arrived home.

Ihave been hearing about this book and have read lots of positive reviews for the longest time but sometimes i get put off by books that have so much hype around them and end up passing them by. Oh how glad i am that i didn't do this with the help. it is worth every glowing review, every recommendation and every superlative ever written about it. the book is set in Jackson, mississippi in 1962 and is narrated by three women in turn. aibileen and minny are black maids and miss skeeter is a white college graduate who mourns the disappearance of her old maid and wants to do something more with her life than marry a local boy and have her kids raised by maids. the story takes us with these women as the embark on a dangerous journey to try and change decades of prejudice and pave the way for a better life for the next generations. through the words of each of these women we learn how rife racism and intolerance was back in the 1960s deep south. there are tales of unbelievable cruelty and humiliation but also tales of tenderness and real love. it was so good to hear a story told primarily from the point of view of the black maids too and refreshing to hear both sides in all its rawness; the distrust and even hatred on both sides. the book also successfully managed to avoid being sensational or over-egging the pudding. despite the subject matter (which is so important) the book never feels too heavy or preachy: it is as light as one of minny¡¯s famous caramel cakes and as well as riotously funny and itender.implore you to read this book, you will fall in love with aibileen, roar with laughter at minny and root for miss skeeter for 450 pages. and i guarantee that miss hilly is one of the best bitches you will come across in any book! she is truly awful but so brilliantly drawn and you will root for her to get her just desserts (pun intended). i feel like i have lost friends now i have finished this book. it is a true gem and i highly, highly recommend.
