Happy new year to all readers and advertisers! We hope it's a prosperous 2011 for you all. We had a great Chrstmas Day at Quinta Fonte do Bispo. There was a wonderful atmosphere and the Abba karaoke crew got into full swing. For once we didn't over indulge, so no, the diet doesn't have to start tomorrrow. The children are back at school and normal life can resume, plus I get to play with their presents whist they're not around, including the tramploine. This month we have all our usual features for you, plus Rosie Peddle gives us gardening advice about invasive plants, we met with Joe Domingues, Kyle and Ziggy from Arco Bar and also bring you a great sweet chilli prawn dish from Restaurant Mont Belo. We hope you carry on enjoying and supporting us throughout 2011, as always, we love to receive your comments and suggestions. Bassett Bassett

A project to build an aerodrome in loulé is in its final stages, although financial backing from private partnerships is still needed to make its construction viable. loulé mayor seruca emídio said: “We are negotiating with potential partners. We need to finalise the project itself and as soon as we have the necessary financial support, we will start the works on the site.” the aerodrome will be located next to the cimPOr cement factory and will cater for light aircraft and small private jets, which can carry a maximum of 30 passengers, thus serving as an alternative to Faro aairport.erodrome features include a landing and takeoff strip planned to be 1.7km long, a 310 metre safety perimeter, 18 aircraft slots and a terminal. seruca emídio believes that the infrastructure, estimated to cost €50 million to build, and will be an important boost for the council and tourism. the works are hoped start in 2014 or 2015, and ana (aeroportos de Portugal) is a key partner and has already backed the project.

Z iggy, originally from Germany, came to Portugal with her partner in the year 2000. they travelled around the country looking for the perfect location to fulfill their dreams and open a bar. eventually, they discovered tavira and fell in love with the town. they realised it was the perfect place to set up their new home and open their bar. Ziggy by chance, became friends with Peter, the then owner of arco bar. she began to help out behind the bar and they became great friends. sadly, Peter passed away leaving arco bar closed for a few months. Ziggy and her partner re-opened the bar and ran it successfully, creating a unique bar with a reputation of being friendly, and truly international. it was also the place for locals to meet up after a long day or nights work. unfortunately Ziggy's relationship with her partner came to an end in 2009, so she returned to work in Germany as a teacher. last year a good friend and customer of the bar mia, was speaking with Ziggy about reopening the bar and mentioned that her grandson would like to run it. it was that October that Kyle came to tavira and visited arco bar. he saw what a great opportuntiy it could be. Originally from Yorkshire in the uK, at the age of seventeen he left home, moved to birmingham and began gaining experience working in

The stunning art gallery in Paderne continues to raise much needed funds for charities in the Algarve. Concluding the year with a christmas Fayre in aid of ‘madraguda’, Galeria cortereal raised 560 euros for the charity. currently running care in the home services for people with life-limiting illnesses, ‘madraguda’s’ long-term ambition is to open the algarve’s first hospice. throughout 2010 the gallery has used special events held at weekends as an opportunity to raise funds for charitable causes. representing an impressive list of international artists, new painting exhibitions are opened every month. Wine and canapés are served and visitors pay a small entry fee, which is donated to a charity. last year individual and group shows were held, a Women’s collective exhibition, an art Fair with paintings sold at affordable prices and a magnificent West coast beach display curated by interior designer & decorator, tom compton. a similar and varied programme of exhibitions is planned for 2011. as well as specialising in paintings the gallery contains a wealth of other artwork produced by sculptors, ceramic artists and skilled artisans. Gorgeous handmade mirrors, lamps and chandeliers, needlepoint cushions, carefully crafted jewellery, organic products for the kitchen and the bathroom and a handpicked collection of beautiful books. located in a delightful ‘quinta’ in the heart of the countryside near Paderne, exhibits are presented in a series of themed rooms, each set arranged to resemble a colourful painting. On fine days exhibits are arranged around the garden and in an outdoor gallery. refreshments are also available on an outside terrace and nearby a newly opened restaurant, ‘alagar’ is recommended for lunch. the gallery re-opens on January 6th.

Body Equilibrium & Balance
Page 11www.eastalgarvemag.com
Imagine the feeling of a rollercoaster ride or the last time you had an inner-ear infection. both affect your body's equilibrium (a state of balance). many factors can affect your sense of balance. the body tries to stay upright when walking, and keep the head level when sitting. this has to do with maintaining a centre of gravity. Feeling dizzy or wobbly is unsettling. Yet you might not ever think about how the body stays balanced most of the time. it takes a lot of physiological processes to do so. understanding equilibrium if someone is running toward you and you cannot get out of the way, you might brace yourself to withstand the impact and stay on your feet. to maintain equilibrium, the body must balance forces applied to the body in a similar way. in fact, the definition of equilibrium is that all forces are equal. and certain physiological systems are involved to maintain this state. Your eyes, hands, skin, feet and ears provide information to the brain. Physiological Factors Your eyes make up the visual system, one important aspect of equilibrium. they see obstacles and send information to the brain about distances and speed. but sometimes your vision might be blocked or compromised. this can affect balance. so your somatosensory system helps. this is your sense of touch through skin and muscles and proprioception (position in space, posture and more). a hand on top of a table can prevent a fall. but your sense of touch doesn't do it all either. Your inner ears have fluid that regulates head position and movement. this is part of the vestibular system. all three systems control equilibrium and balance. Other Factors temporary and chronic conditions can also affect equilibrium. it is hard to walk if your pelvis is misaligned. a sinus infection might affect inner-ear fluid and cause dizziness. You might not be able to stand upright if your posture is poor. stress and anxiety can throw off equilibrium. if you have vision problems, balance can be

New
Well, here we are again. another year has come and gone. a lot’s happened in the past 12 months since we opened, some good, some not so much. but you can be sure of one thing: a lot of people experienced hearing loss in the past year. that’s a stone cold hfact.earing loss occurs naturally –organically – as part of the aging process. the ears just don’t process sound as well as they did back in the day. nature’s little way of saying, “heY, YOu’re a Year Older” –only each year, nature has to say it a little louder (or is it softer?). now’s the time we all make our new Year’s resolutions. to shed that extra poundage. to finally kick the tobacco habit or stop eating fast food. all positive, beneficial promises to ourselves. and sometimes, we actually stick to those promises we make to ourselves. (sometimes we sdon’t.)o,to get you on your way to a healthier, happier, better-sounding 2011, here are this year’s new ear’s resolutions from your friends at cat centro auditivo de tavira: i will stop smoking We all know the negative effects smoking has on the body, which includes your hearing. it works like this. smoking tobacco restricts blood flow and each time you light up, you deny the cochlea and millions of hair cells we use to hear, the oxygen-rich blood they require. With each cigarette, you damage your hearing and over time the damage is cumulative. i won’t listen to my mP3 player at excessively loud levels. One of the most common causes of hearing loss is exposure to loud noise. You probably already knew that. but you probably don’t know how much exposure is too much Well, exposure.the pros tell us that damage caused by exposure to loud noise depends on both the level of the sound and the exposure time to the sound. according to noise experts if you were to listen to music for 24 hours anything for up to 75 dba would be safe. i will wear hearing protection. damage to the ear can be caused by exposure to loud noise (as just discussed). loud noise can include

musculoskeletal alignment balance within muscle groups and alignment of the skeletal system affect body equilibrium and balance. small shifts of bones can affect the whole skeletal system. When the bite of the jaw is off or one leg is longer than the other, the entire spine compensates for the misalignment. Opposing muscle groups stabilize the joints of the body through the balance of strength and tension. if one muscle is tight and its opposite is weak, the joint is pulled in the direction of tightness. improving balance You need to practice balance to maintain it. as you age, balance might be less natural. there are exercises, such as standing on one leg and standing on tiptoes that can improve balance. exercise classes in yoga, Pilates and core stability will promote strong balance and posture. be aware of what factors might compromise your balance, and know when to seek help for issues such as vertigo. ‘The bowen Technique’ improves your balance. this very gentle and effective technique aims to return the body to its natural balance, relieving pain and stresses in the body. it works on pressure points all around the body encouraging the skeletal system back into the correct position. Once you become off balance your health starts to deteriorate. if you can relate to any of the problems discussed in this article, especially pelvic misalignment, jaw misalignment, sinus issues and stress, then you really should try ‘the bowen technique’ to get your body back into equilibrium. start the year with both feet heading forward and maintain your body’s balance, allowing your good health and wellbeing to follow. Gareth bullock practices ‘the bowen technique’ near Olhão, santa barbara and vilamoura. anything from a chainsaw, snow blower to rocking out at a concert. if you know you’re going to be exposed to potential hearing damage the choice is very simple, wear protective iear-gear.willprotect the hearing of others. if your ‘tween or teen is standing next to you and you can hear the music pumping through those ear buds, it’s way too loud. limit the amount of sound your child or grandchild or best friend is exposed to. it might seem like nagging, but you really are doing a good deed by warning loved ones to turn down the sound. so be a nag. someone will thank you for your concern someday. i will stop using cotton swabs to clean my ears. ear hygiene and cotton swabs go hand-in-hand. all our lives, we’ve been told to clean out our ears. bad advice. the use of a cotton swab actually pushes the earwax and debris deeper into the ear canal and puts you at risk for damaging your eardrum. accidents happen and rupturing your eardrum with a cotton swab is one accident you do not want to happen. if you choose to still use a cotton swab, limit it to the outer edge of the ear canal where the wax eventually ends up. i will have my hearing tested. Yes, it’s a hard resolution to keep but a hearing test is an important part of keeping what hearing you have intact. make an appointment and undergo a hearing test – no matter what your age. a hearing test is painless, it doesn’t take a lot of time out of your day and it provides invaluable information to you and the hearing professional on the extent of the hearing loss you’ve already experienced. think this is something for seniors only? Wrong. We have been testing patients in their 20s and 30s who have damaged their hearing through long-term exposure to noise and drumroll please for our final iresolution….willnotaccept hearing loss. if you can’t read the newspaper, you get glasses. if you can’t hear the person across the table, you get hearing aids. hearing loss is one of the most treatable conditions in the medical and health spheres. You don’t have to accept it simply because it’s happening to you. take a pro-active stance! happy new Year to all eastern algarve magazine readers from Kelly & Pedro at caT-centro auditivo de Tavira.

e're here to talk motor bikes, to help Joe find sponsorship for the Portuguese national classic motorcycle championship next year and also learn about his chequered (pun intended) past. the son of a bull fighter (manuel antonio domingues) Joe moved to london when he was nine, which explains his perfect Growingenglish. up in chelsea he soon became interested in bikes and would take trips out of the city when at 19 he found himself at brands hatch. evolving into an all consuming passion, this led to him joining the then famous dixon racing school where they soon knocked off his rough edges and from ‘84-‘87 he was racing regularly in the top level club and national races with some good wins and fastest laps of the day. his racing cv is pretty impressive he says he still has the fastest lap on a Yamaha 350 and also on a Kawasaki 900r ninja at 51.8 seconds on the latter bike he won the 1986 amc challenge trophy with 3 wins over the weekend and the fastest lap of the 300 riders competing. he raced at macau Grand Prix and the world tt Formulas from ’84-’94 and was the top runner in the Portuguese national championship, but missing rounds due to commitments back in london reduced his chances of ever winning the championship. Joe’s alter-ego resided in the world of hospitality, training as a chef at victoria catering college got him a job at actor michael caine’s restaurant langans brasserie, and his two passions conjoined when langan’s became a sponsor for Joe’s racing. it was a great time to be working in the booming 80’s london, and he got to know many of the famous names coming through the door at langans, from the Pricess diana and the Queen mother, who came often after horse racing with Pat eddery and lester Piggot, to Koo stark and david bailey. the return to his homeland came about when his boss michael caine Meet Joe Domingues a man with a passion for high speed motor bikes and a predilection for good food.

Joe says: “if i can find a couple of smallish sponsors i’ll be racing the whole of next season’s Portuguese national classic motor cycle championship on my either my Yamaha or suzuki”. it has been easy to warm to Joe, with his ready smile and a friendly face, confirmed frequently throughout our interview by interruptions from numerous passing friends who stop to say hello. i am sure that if you have the good fortune to meet him you will join me in wishing him every success in all his ventures, especially his quest for motor cycle glory. interested sponsors or if you'd just like to meet Joe, he can be contacted on 911 956 149.
Santa catarina is a small hillside eastern algarve village near loulé and close to são brás de alportel with beautiful countryside. i thought this month we would focus on a local village, they hold so much charm, the local layed back characters, the focal ponts of the village, buildings such as the church and school, the centre of a small communtity. surrounded by groves of flourishing almond and orange trees, this is a town typical of the limestone lands of the algarve's intermediate rural area. known as the barrocal. the church is in the renaissance style ( 16th century ) and has a decorated porch. the interior is made up of

three naves and has columns with ionic capitals. the main chapel is spanned by a painted vault and has to one side a manueline doorway (16th century). among the statues to be seen, there is a 16th century nossa senhora da Graça (Our lady of the Grace) which is particularly deserving of mention. the adoration of the shepherds is depicted on a panel. You can buy almost anything in this small village, so long as you are prepared to wait for the locals to finsh their daily catch up on gossip, which is quite pleasing to watch, even if you don't speak the language. there are a couple of cafes of course, the paper shop ,the co ops, one of which has a small museum relating to olive processing and a small indoor market shop selling frsh local produce. Just out of the centre of the village are several typical portuguese restaurants. Just up the hill on the en270 you have sao bras de alportel, famous for producing corks, used in some of the finest wines of the world. the surrounding scenery is as dramatic as it is beautiful. santa catarina is an ideal place for a real taste of the algarve. the locals are friendly and there is such a lovely sense of community. You can also pick up some authentic produce, and the odd bottle or two of figo if you're feeling brave. there is also a market on the 4th sunday of each month, where you can sample the local produce such as cheese, olives, chourizo and a beer!
Page 18 I f you think the return on your capital is important, think again. if the last two years have proven anything, return of capital is clearly more important. i remember an advertisement of bankers trust -a brokerage firm which later merged with deutsche bank in 1998- about risk management. the ad was about a person smiling while standing in front of his house on the beach of a tropical island in the middle of the ocean. all seemed to be perfectly fine. however, if you ‘zoomed out’ you could see he was not standing on an island but on the back of a whale ready to submerge. the message: risk is where you least expect it to be. in times when companies are struggling to survive, it is important to be careful whom to do business with as some may go bankrupt causing an unpleasant interruption of services or non delivery of (partly) paid goods. the best way to avoid this is to bring home the product you just bought or to pay on delivery. With services this is a different matter. most are settled after the service is rendered. but there are services that require a payment upfront. in this case property management companies and lawyers spring to mind. separate from their company account, they have a client account a.k.a. an escrow account. On this account clients deposit funds for future payments. in the case of a property management company this could include the payment of utilities and general expenses of the property under management. if the property is rented out and rents are received on behalf of the owner, rents are also accumulated on this account on behalf of the owner. lawyers frequently receive large sums on the client account for the purchase of a property. the inappropriate use of client’s money for the benefit of REAL ESTATE LIVE, INVEST AND ESCAPE GOLF PROPERTIES VILLAS APARTMENTS TOWNHOUSES LHV-927PLOTS Covering the whole of the Algarve as independant real estate agents, we can provide you with unbiased advice when you decide to purchase a property and can introduce you to a wide choice of reputable mortgage banks, architects, lawyers, builders, chartered surveyors and interior designers. Page 19 the company is not only immoral but also a criminal offence. both 2009 and 2010 were years that separated the boys from the men. however, some do not appear to be what they are by cutting corners. in a recession companies with a good track record can get a credit line from a bank, but everyone knows they are reluctant to lend money due to their own problems. if they do lend money it comes with a high interest rate. For some the alternative to an expensive credit line or no credit at all is the inappropriate use of money from the escrow account. a property buyer can avoid a problem like this by issuing a cheque for payment in the name of the vendor instead of transferring funds to a lawyer’s escrow account. a company in financial difficulty will not inform you about their situation and if you do business with a company that uses a client account, here are some flags that may indicate there are problems: delay(s) in the completion date of the deed (lawyer), unpaid (utility) bills, undeclared and non payment of rental income (property management). however, keep in mind that the majority of companies work hard to deliver a good service to their customers. With the others, by the time you find out it is usually too late. We wish you and your family a happy and Prosperous new Year. Robert Bijker Land & Houses algarve –yellow

Packing service • Mudanças e Armazenagem Wet rooms are the rage these days because of the certain advantages they offer. they are stylish and easy to clean and can be installed in a floor space with an area as small as 1m2. however, if space is no object, large designs with custom plans can be installed giving us the freedom to design as we please and as we see fit. if you are looking for a good or unique wet room design, you can do so via the internet. designs range from normal designs that are rectangular in shape to spiral designs that gives our home a whole new look of fresh style. What is a wet room? it's a completely water-proofed room where you can have a walk-in shower without an enclosure or shower tray. What drainage do i need? a wetroom floor slopes towards an inset drain where water will run away. to create this gradient, a plywood sub-floor or a sloping shower tray former is installed and then tiled over. it's likely your floor will need to be strengthened to take the extra weight. it must also be raised by about 5cm to allow for the waste fittings. how is the room waterproofed? a waterproof membrane is applied under the wall and floor tiles, similar to that used for swimming pools. this is known as tanking. it's critical to get a good seal between the walls and floors, as any leaks will be very expensive to put right later on. What type of tiles should i use? ceramic or porcelain tiles are perfect as they're hard wearing and water resistant. if you prefer stone, limestone and granite tiles are good options, though they'll need regular sealing. Whichever you choose, opt for textured non-slip tiles. For a luxury option, solid-surface materials such as corian are non-porous and seamless, so don't require grouting.

legislation (decreto lei nº 565/99) lists about 400 exotic plant species as introduced to Portugal, and from these 30 are classified as invasive species. the list of plants considered invasive, and therefore illegal to sell or to plant, is available at invasoras/index.php?menu=62&language=eng&tabewww1.ci.uc.pt/
Rosie Peddle kindly provides some fascinating information about friendly and not so friendly east algarvian plants.
la=geral so, what is an invasive plant ? this is defined as a plant which has the appearance of being ‘naturalised’ but which is originally from another part of the world. it reproduces freely in large quantities and over a wide area away from the mother plant. these plants have the potential to cover large areas, threatening other vegetation, and thereby significantly altering the existing natural ecosystems. a native plant is defined as a spontaneous, natural plant of the region it inhabits, and which lives only within the limits of the natural reproduction of the plant. areas most at risk from invasive plants are first and foremost those of fragile natural plant communities, such as sand dunes or coastal areas. these areas are normally rich in a diversity of plants adapted to very specific conditions. unfortunately, many protected areas are being invaded by seed borne invaders such as acacias and pampas grass – tough and durable invaders which tolerate the extreme conditions of such areas. You may already have some of these invasive plants on your land or in your garden but you may not see the damage being caused by the distribution of seed from your plants as these are carried away over a large area. if you visit the west coast of the algarve you will see invasive clumps of pampas grass along the roads and on the cliff tops. do not go near this stuff as each leaf edge is like a razor blade ! it is extremely dangerous for children and pets. Flamethrowers will not kill it – i have heard that some people have been successful with large quantities of salt but this can poison the soil for a long ttime!heroadsides of the lower slopes of monchique are also plastered with acacia dealbata (mimosa) trees, these follow the waterways and damp gullies as the seed has been borne along these routes. the landscape is covered with the yellow flowers in February/march
over 550 exotic plant species have been introduced into Portugal (continental). nowadays about 80 of these species are considered as invasive or potentially invasive. however, most species are only found as ornamentals and in agricultural or forestry systems and do not show, so far, invasive behavior. many commonly used garden plants fall into this latter category and are not considered a problem. alien species have become so familiar that we often think they are native species. Often, their beauty makes us like them, and sometimes they simply pass unnoticed in the midst of so many other species. however, some of these are silent enemies that are invading ecosystems and threatening the natural species that characterize them- these are invasive plants. We must stop their Portuguesespread!
Page 31www.eastalgarvemag.com Gardens
Invadersabout watch out!! Cortaderia selloana
Page 32 www.eastalgarvemag.com but these trees now form a sort of monoculture which has totally smothered any natural vegetation, and in some places, even the tough arundo donax canes of the giant grass which usually inhabit such areas. this is also considered to be invasive. the team for the invader project from the center for Functional ecology at coimbra university has developed a collection of bookmarker cards about "Plantas invasoras em Portugal”. this collection includes the 13 plant species considered invasive. the bookmarkers include a photo, a short description about each species and general information about invasive plants. these are available at mGs events and from rosie Peddle at brosie@thebtf.netiologicalinvasion by exotic species is a process that can be seen increasingly in Portugal, and which is occurring throughout the world, in utterly alarming proportions. at issue is the global biodiversity and ecosystem services that support life on our planet. and yet, the most serious problem is that we are often the ones who cause trouble and contribute to its aggravation, often without realizing it. We must learn to identify these species, to understand what they represent, and do everything possible not to make the problem worse. in Portugal, many of the species that behave as invasive today were introduced in times past with objectives that have long since ceased to be relevant, such as erosion control of sand dunes (eg carpobrotus edulis or hottentot fig), stabilization of slopes and timber wood (eg acacia dealbata) or tannin (eg acacia mearnsii) hedges (eg hakea salicifolia & h. sericea), food colour (eg Phytolacca americana) or simply ornamental (eg cortaderia selloana or Pampas grass). in addition to these intentional introductions, there were others that occurred accidentally, but with equally serious bconsequences.iologicalinvasions, particularly by exotic species, are currently recognized as a major cause of biodiversity loss, changing structural and functional ecosystems. this problem is also considered as a major component of global change, occurring at an increasing rate tworldwide.heproblems caused by invasive species are particularly serious because these species are a threat which can be irreversible, eg. after reproduction, dispersal and subsequent adaptation, control becomes problematic and eradication very difficult or even impossible in many cases. it is an increasing problem in many regions of the world, and is particularly severe in mediterranean ecosystems such as the algarve. it is another threat to the natural and special biodiversity of the algarve, but one which we can all play a part in fighting. Please take some time to familiarise yourself with the list of banned plants, look for alternatives and plant wisely for the future wellbeing of this very special part of europe.

We are at the time of year when storms seem to abound in the algarve and cause us to lose electricity or the electricity brightens and dims due to the rain. i am sure that there is not one of us who does not identify with this even if we do not have a computer. do any of you dread someone flush ing the loo in another bathroom when you are in the shower and the water suddenly turns very hot! it hurts and can almost scald you if you are not quick enough. When the electricity surges up and down or suddenly shuts down, then your hard drive; computer power supply, as well as other components are being scalded when this happens. Your data can also be scalded; if you have ever experienced corrupted files, power surges may have been the Powerculprit.surges are a real problem, not only for computers but other expen sive electronic equipment, lightning can ‘fry’ computer equipment and we know here that we can get some really fierce storms. however, small power surges are a more insidious menace. they can corrupt data and ruin components, but they can also slowly cause cumulative wear and tear as your hard drive slows down and speeds up due to uneven power supply. so what is the solution? an uninterruptible Power supply is a device that sits between a power supply (e.g. a wall outlet) and a de vice (e.g. a comput batteryter.intherunforrecommended(Poweruer)ninterruptedsupplyuPs):thesearecomputerstothroughalloftime, notjuststormyweathhisunithasathatis

Wood smoke in the house – a serious health hazard
It is reliably reported by scientists that “wood smoke is chemically active in the body 40 times longer than tobacco smoke” so any form of this poisoning in our homes needs immediate enquiry
Chimneys or flue systems in our homes are sup posed to be designed to remove efficiently the products of combustion from the heating ap pliances in our living spaces, but if they are poorly conceived, constructed or just too small for the task then we will experience problems either at the out set of their usage or at some time in the future when an on the limit flue system is tipped over the edge of its capacity by some additional factor. in the case of an open fire, we have observed here in algarve that fireplaces commonly have an over large fire opening but an undersized flue system in either cross section or height and in a number of cases both! the flue just cannot cope with the smoke produced and it billows into the room. this dramatic effect can also be caused by many oth er factors however, so that even a correctly sized fire opening and flue combination can give rise to smoke emission. Often these factors can be a combination of wind direction and pressure, chimney position on the roof or proximity to other parts of the building or poten tially even a newly added adjacent building or structure. as is usual with such issues all factors need to be as sessed to identify the root cause and remedy for the “problem.ahotflue works and a cold one will not”; recently a client called to say that they had a massive amount of smoke pouring out into the living room from the fire place when they lit their fire, it having worked beautifully up until that time. On inspection no blockage was found but it became clear from our discussion that they had wood burners, pellet stoves, pellets and chimney sweeping Call Gavin in Tavira Tel. 281 326 551
just returned home from a 2 month trip and that they had got into the habit of lighting their fire with firelight ers which burn slowly and do not produce much heat volume! the problems root cause was clearly evident, a large chimney 250mm (10 inches) in diameter and some 10 metres (30+ feet) high full of cold and damp air (re member it had rained a lot recently) cannot be lifted by the heat produced by a few firelighters, so the fire was re-laid with paper and dry kindling plus some smaller logs with some 20 sheets of newspaper loosely crum pled into balls and piled on top. the newspaper top ping was lit first and preceded to burn as expected with suitable ferocity and enormous and almost instant heat output, igniting the paper below and starting the com bustion of the kindling and logs. the cold air was lifted, the flue heated and the smoke went up and not into the room. an operational problem only, in this instance! Other problems are more difficult to cure and can lead to the installation of a wood burning stove! Why you might ask will a wood burner work when my open fire would not? airflow is the simple answer; no huge hole into which the air can rush without a big enough escape route! exactly as happens in rivers in flood conditions. the closed combustion chamber of a wood burning stove generally has an air inlet with some type of regula tor and a relatively small flue outlet coupled with a flame path extending baffle, such that the wood can be burned in a controlled manner and maximise the residence time of the hot gasses within the stove, giving them more time to heat the body of the stove and hence the sur rounding room and not the atmosphere!
SpeCIAlISTS In
additionally if you do not like your fireplace, then gener ally as the chimney breast is not structural then it could be removed and you have free reign for your imagination with any style of wood burner you desire! however as with all things wood burning stoves vary enormously in the quality of their design, build and ef ficiency and it is generally true that you get what you pay for, but only if it is correctly specified and installed! as it must be clear from the scale and number of prob lems that can be encountered, it has only been possible to scrape the surface within the scope of this article, so should you require help or assistance please contact us directly. europe’s and the world’s route of quality destinations and the private sector has embraced this policy suc cessfully. according to the bank of Portugal’s statistical bulletin, year-on-year increases in tourism revenue were up 12.1% in 2010. When compared with the benchmark year of 2008, revenue is still up by 44 million euros. the bank of Portugal explains that these surprisingly good figures are largely due to considerable growth in three major markets. dutch visitors spent 20.3% more in Portugal than they did last year, britons converted 12.6% more of their pounds in 2010, while Germans managed to spend 11.8% more on their visit to Portugal this year than they did in 2009. Further afield, exponential growth in tourists arriving from brazil has also been attributed to this year’s posi tive figures, with brazilians spending 56.3% more in

Portugal so far in 2010. in a study, it has emerged that 85% of britons state that affordability is their number one holiday clincher, with Portugal’s competitive prices a clear winner. the drop in occupancy rates for 2 and 3 star hotels supports the Government phase-out of the small rural tourism establishments that is currently under way. they are all obliged to re-license under existing rules for alter native business models by 31st december 2010 or will face fines. as you may be aware, the east algarve magazine is pro duced by the owners of the Quinta da Fonte do bispo which comes under the rural tourism banner and we have decided to stay registered as a small hotel for the short term, but we have been granted planning permis sion for construction of a number of extra rooms and for some improvements to the services and facilities that we offer. New year expert tips from Benamor's resident professional, Keith Ashdown.
•Represented G.B. and Ireland in the P.G.A. Cup against the U.S.A. •16 Hole in ones (4 on par 4’s) •Course record holder at Benamor, 65 (6 under par), although has scored 60 strokes on 3 occasions (Not counted as a course record as they were not scored in a professional competition)
Good timing is the synchronization and coordination of the swing and body movements and ensures that the club-head is at its maximum speed at impact. the faster your club is moving as you hit the ball, the further your ball will go, if the other movements have been correct. have you noticed that whenever you try to place your ball short of a bunker or water hazard, nine times out of ten you go into it, just because you have taken a smooth swing and timed it better? try this experiment. hit two balls, one as hard as you possibly can, and one smoothly. concentrating on hitting through the ball. the first one will go off with a rush. the second seems to leave the club much more slowly but will bore its way through the air and go several yards past the first one, the reason being that the club-head of the second shot stays in contact with the ball just a fraction of a second longer. the strange thing is that what happens is exactly the opposite of what you expect. although you thought you were not hitting the second ball as hard as the first, in actual fact you were hitting much harder, because with the first shot all your power was expended by the time your club reach the ball, while with the second all your power was concentrated at the moment of impact, generative and creating club-head speed. it is rather like a motor-car starting slowly and gradually accelerating. speaking of acceleration do you know that a golf ball leaves the club-head at about 150m.p.h? but what is the power behind this 150m.p.h? Your swing. swing as much as you possibly can. if you are out for a walk swing your walking stick with left and right hand, in the every opportunity. even at meal times hold your knife and fork in the fingers and rotate your wrists towards one another and back again several times. this helps to get the wrist flexible. the swing controls everything and must not be overpowered by the shoulders turning too soon. the club is controlled by hands and fingers, the stronger the hands and fingers, the more you will be able to speed the rhythm and get speed into the club-head at impact. remember good rhythm means good ltiming.adies can deduct 3040 metres per club. eg maximum distance for no7 iron = 110 metres. Enjoy your golf, Happy new year, Keith.

In early december Olhanense travelled to lisbon to do battle with the league champions. the algarve side made their illustrious opponents fight all the way for their 2-0 victory and but for a bad mistake by keeper moretto and, at the other end, a disallowed goal it might have been a different story. driven forward by the excellent Paulo sérgio, the visitors caused the home defence plenty of problems in the opening half, with roberto having to save well from Jorge Gonçalves to prevent the algarve outfit from taking the lead. Just before half-time cardozo’s header slipped under the body of moretto. shortly after the break Paulo sergio had the ball in the net, but his celebrations were cut short as the strike was ruled out for offside. saviola ghosted in at the far post to head home a second goal with ten minutes to go. two weeks later and Olhanense, seven league games without a win, were hoping to turn the tide when they entertained nacional at the José arcanjo stadium, Olhão. having beaten the madeira side in the Portugal cup in november, Olhanense was looking for maximum points to reestablish their place in the top half of the league. the tv cameras were present and the fans were in festive mood. nacional could have taken a surprise lead as early as the seventh minute when centre-forward Orlando sa had a free header but missed the target with ricardo batista at his mercy. this was the former sporting keeper, batista’s first league game of the season. moretto is out for at least a month with a knee injury whilst Yontcha, vinicius, delson, djalma & lulinha were also sidelined through injury. midway through the first period carlos Fernandes nearly gave the home the lead when his header hit the post after a flick on from a corner. in the second-half it the latest soccer news from Chris Wright.

Orlando sa was played through but with only the keeper to beat he shot wide. this 0-0 scoreline leaves Olhanense in eleventh place on sixteen points. iT’s benFica again! Olhanense will meet benfica in the 5th round of the Portugal cup in lisbon on the 5th January whilst another trip to the capital takes place two weeks later for a bWin league cup clash when the algarve club play………..yes, you’ve guessed it, benfica! OLhanense sTaRs On The mOVe? Olhanense may well see the departure of a number of their young stars this month. braga President antonio salvador recently met with Olhanense President isidoro sousa to finalise the transfer of vinicius to last season’s Premier liga runnersup. it is believed that a fee in the region of 200,000euros, plus the loan of Keita, has been agreed. vinicius, a 24 year-old brazilian midfield player, has had an outstanding season for Olhanense and is just one of a number of players being targeted by other clubs. sporting lisbon & braga are keen on another of Olhanense’s young stars 24 year-old centraldefender Jardel. Jardel is also being targeted by Werder bremen (Germany) & Genoa (italy). a source close to the club considers that a fee of 80,000euros plus a 20% sell-on clause in any future transfer is being discussed. braga are also rumoured to be interested in defender João Gonçlaves whilst centre-forward Yontcha may be on the move to asia. there have also been whispers that castro, on loan at Olhanense for the past two seasons, may return to the club from Fc Porto. daúto Faquirá has put together a team that has played some excellent football this season but he will now have to start re-building especially if Paulo sérgio also leaves. PResenTaTiOn DinneR in PechÃO the Olhanense expat supporters Group has made a 1000euros donation to sporting clube Olhanense for youth sport development. the cheque was handed over to manager daúto Faquirà and director of Football marco couto at the group’s Presentation night dinner at the restaurante Fonte nova. the money was raised from the sale of match day programmes & commemorative badges together with the proceeds of a christmas raffle. Players vinicius, Jardel, lulinha & Jorge vale joined the festivities and helped to make this a special evening for the fans. daúto Faquirà said, “We as a club are very honoured and privileged to have the support of such a dedicated group of fans. thank you for your continuing support, both on-and-off the field, which is very much appreciated”. a signed football was raffled and won by alyssa Janssens-thennis. brian caldwell proposed the toast to hrh Queen elizabeth ii and the President of Portugal while emily richardson led a tribute to the club. Following the meal, a few football songs kept the gathering in high spirits before Paul nicholson closed the evening by thanking the restaurant staff and organisers for a great evening.

Failed love affairs and a oncesatisfying real estate career that has, since the death of her beloved and larger-than-life midget boss, become stressful and tiresome. her adulthood that has fallen horribly short of the hollywood-like fantasy that maggie had conjured for herself as a girl. because of this, maggie has decided to end her life and has come up with a detailed plot involving the river, wrist and ankle weights, a raft, and quick drying glue. she is merely waiting for the right time to use it. this is point in the life of its protagonist where Fanny Flagg begins her most recent novel, the occasionally ridiculous, sometimes far-fetched, and often uproarious i still dream about You. throughout the novel, as maggie repeatedly comes across obstacles to achieving her goal, from dealing with the nefarious babs biddington, a rival real estate agent wreaking havoc on birmingham’s most beautiful historical districts, to helping her best friend, a quirky overeaters anonymous member with political ambitions, through a health scare. throughout the course of the novel, Flagg introduces us to a cast of colorful characters with distinct personalities, as well as to a city that she very clearly loves. Once the final page is finished, this book is nothing short of a fun, timely, and lifeaffirming story of one woman’s return from the edge. the main character is maggie Fortenberry, a woman with a brandnew plan to change her life but who keeps getting interrupted by phone calls from friends and responsibilities to the troubled real-estate company where she works. a former miss alabama who represented her state in the miss america pageant in atlantic city, maggie is a worthy descendant of those four fabulous women who were the main protagonists in Fried Green tomatoes. in this novel, as in all of her novels, Fannie Flagg creates memorable characters, great set pieces, and gales of unexpected laughter. there is also a mystery in the center of the story that is solved in a shocking and most satisfying fashion. i still dream about You is a love letter to the city of birmingham and the state of alabama. Flagg creates a world that you love entering and are reluctant to leave. You fall hard for characters like hazel Whisenknott, brenda Peoples— the list goes on and on, and there is great wit and wisdom on every page. i’m still smiling at the passing mention of the man who robbed the First alabama bank armed with only a live lobster. she has written a wondrous gift for all of us--five stars for Fannie Flagg. dos Poeta Emiliano da Costa 16 Tavira Tel: +351 281 323 199 38 E-Mail: lizbeaupied@yahoo.com
