We wish all our readers and advertisers a very Merry Christmas. It's hard to believe it's that time of year already, except at 6pm when the firewood comes out. To put you in the mood, we have focused on the beautiful Christmas lights in the East Algarve region and some interesting facts about seasonal herbs and spices, their origins and uses. We bring you a delicious grilled Octopus dish from Casa Do Polvo Tasquinha, introduce the recently formed Hairy Lemon Golf Society and speak to the owners of Jag's Bar & Bistro in Spain, where we received a very friendly welcome. We also feature our makeover winner, financial advice, property, the latest sports news from Chris Wright and our regular book review. I hope you enjoy this Christmas wherever you may be; we'll see you in the New Year. Thank you for all your lovely comments and good wishes. Bassett Bassett

Sixteen members of Rotary Club Estoi Palace International were honoured to receive their Paul Harris Fellow awards from District Governor José Coelho and Assistant District Governor Silvério Guerreiro at the club meeting on 15 November 2011. Following the presentation José Coelho addressed the members, complimenting them and praising the Club for its activities and high achievements, thereby setting an example to others. Paul Harris Fellows are individuals recognised by Rotary for their outstanding contribution to the organisation and its objectives locally and internationally. Each new Paul Harris Fellow receives a commemorative certificate and a Paul Harris Fellow badge. Paul Harris was one of the Founders of Rotary, that grew from a single club in Chicago in 1905 into the global organisation of more than 34,000 clubs and 1.2 million members worldwide that we know today. The Paul Harris Award was set up in 1957 in memory of the founders’ work to recognise outstanding contributions to the ideals of Rotary and is the most important honour awarded by the organisation. Club President Bill Mahoney said he was very proud to be involved with a club which continues to make such an important contribution for the benefit of society, from help in the local community to its donations to the Rotary campaign for the eradication of Polio worldwide. Our members have joined a select group who have been given this award. After months of 'will they - won't they' the tolls on the A22 will commence on the 8th December. President Aníbal Cavaco Silva, announced his approval of the legislation that will enable tolls to operate on the Via do Infante. The Commission for road users in the Algarve was very disappointed and promised to come up with an injunction to stop the tolls on the A22. The leader of the ‘antis’, João Vasconcelos said the approval of the law "only shows that the President of the Republic did not listen to the concerns of the population.” For a limited period of time, legally registered residents will be exempt from charges for the first 10 transactions per month, after which there will be a 15% reduction in fees for each transaction. Motorists are urged to keep their residency status updated in order to apply for these discounts, which will not apply to tourists or part-time foreign residents. These exemptions and discounts will come to an end on 1 July 2012.

So it was only right that Iris & Mike Langley were on hand to present twenty sets of heavy duty fire protection clothing to the Tavira firefighters at their headquarters in Rua de Bombeiros. Jamie Palma said, “We are extremely grateful to Adrian for organising the donation of these suits which of top quality and will replace some of our old suits”.

4 QUIT SMOKING

Over 66 percent of adults are considered overweight or obese, so it is not surprising to find that weight loss is one of the most popular New Year's resolutions. Setting reasonable goals and staying focused are the two most important factors in sticking with a weight loss program, and the key to success for those millions who made a New Year's commitment to shed extra pounds.

Start enjoying the rest of your smoke-free life!

5 ENJOY LIFE MORE Given the hectic, stressful lifestyles of many working and even retired Algarvians, it is no wonder that "enjoying life more" has become a popular resolution in recent years. It's an important step to a happier and healthier you! Consider one many holistic healing treatments designed to bring balance to your body, mind and soul. Or just get out and try something new! Take up a new hobby. Go to a theatre performance, or head to the local spa. The Algarve offers a wealth of artistic and recreational activities to meet just about anyone's wishes.

Happy New Year to all of the readers of the Health Page and I wish you a very happy and healthy 2012. Whether you are competing in the Olympics or just watching it on TV, I hope it inspires you to get up, get moving and stay fit & healthy, just like my articles! AND if any of you therapists, doctors, dentists etc. would like to be featured on this page, it is free, and I would love to do an article on you and your practices. We have to look after the small local businesses in our areas, otherwise one day, when you need them, they will all have gone... Here are your top ten New years resolutions to keep you fit and healthy in 2012: 1SPEND MORE TIME WITH FAMILY & FRIENDS

If you have resolved to make this the year that you stamp out your smoking habit, over-the-counter availability of nicotine replacement therapy now provides easier access to proven quit-smoking aids. Even if you've tried to quit before and failed, don't let it get you down. On average, smokers try about four times before they quit for good.

www.eastalgarvemag.com

Gareth Bullock explains why our eyes, ears and posture all help our balance.

While many people use the New Year as an incentive to finally stop drinking, most are not equipped to make such a drastic lifestyle change all at once. Many heavy drinkers fail to quit cold turkey but do much better when they taper gradually, or even learn to moderate their drinking. If you have decided that you want to stop drinking, there is a world of help and support available. There are also a number of treatment-based programs, as well as support groups for families.

Recent polls conducted show that more than 50% of us vow to appreciate loved ones and spend more time with family and friends this year. Make plans to meet up with friends for an evening of comradery at a favourite Algarve restaurant or take the family out for a lovely long walk on one of our many glorious beaches. Work shouldn't always come first! Make time. 2FIT IN FITNESS The evidence is in for fitness. Regular exercise has been associated with more health benefits than anything else known to man. Studies show that it reduces the risk of some cancers, increases longevity, helps achieve and maintain weight loss, enhances mood, lowers blood pressure, and even improves arthritis. In short, exercise keeps you healthy and makes you look and feel better. Why not make this the time to start getting in shape.

Keep a level head!

Join the millions of people who have resolved to spend this year getting a handle on their finances. It's a promise that will repay itself many times over in the year ahead. It may be difficult but try and find a way and don’t be affraid to ask for help. Money causes more stress than we can believe. 8 LEARN SOMETHING NEW Have you vowed to make this year the year to learn something new? Perhaps you are considering a career change, want to learn a new language, sport or craft, or just how to fix your computer? Whether you take a course or read a book, you'll find education to be one of the easiest, most motivating New Year's resolutions to keep. There are plenty of opportunities to learn something new just by reading through this magazine.

9 HELP OTHERS A popular, non-selfish New Year's resolution, volunteerism can take many forms. Whether you choose to spend time helping out at your charity shop, there are many nonprofit volunteer organizations that could really use your help. If your time is really in short supply, maybe you can donate the furniture, clothing and other household items that you no longer need, to local charities rather than leaving them out by the bins to fill up our landfills.

10 GET ORGANIZED On just about every New Year resolution top ten list, organization can be a very reasonable goal. Whether you want your home organized enough that you can invite someone over on a whim, or your office organized enough that you can find the stapler when you need it, these tips and resources should get you started on the way to a more organized life. De-clutter and organise, my two favourite words!! Happy New Year from Gareth Bullock & The Bowen Technique, keeping you fit and healthy.

It is one of the most common causes of back pain and affects an incredible 80 per cent of the population, limiting their daily routine and life style. A herniated disc occurs when the inter vertebral disc nucleus migrates from the centre to the periphery, towards the spinal canal leaving spaces were nerve roots are compressed, and inflamed, which can cause sciatica. There are very many causes including, obesity and physical inactivity and excess, changes in the degenerate spine (arthritis, hernias and protrusions) as well as trauma, pregnancy, repetitive work and incorrect posture, to name but a few. Bad posture while simply sitting or bending can cause compression to increase and the subsequent displacement of the disc. There are several different methods and techniques that can be used to treat patients including Global Posture Re Education, (see article in Dec 2011), Osteopathy, Homeopatic injection, Homeopathy, Neural therapy, as well as Acupuncture. Experts suggest that we take gentle exercise such swimming, water aerobics, pilates and yoga which can help. Surgery is normally the very last option as there a the risk of reoccurance either of the same hernia, or another above or below, also because in many cases the post surgical fibrosis can compress the nerve itself. One of the most effective treatment is RPG which decompresses the disc, relaxes muscles, aligns postural deviations in the spine and stretches shortened muscles, repositioning the vertebrae and disc.

This month we found ourselves in the delightful family owned Crispim Restaurant in Fuseta, were we met with Ana and her son Sondra who were kind enough to share with us their story of how the impressive restaurant and their first business “Bar Cubanito”, also in Fuseta, began. Ana, originally from Angola met her Portuguese husband Fernado whilst he was studying there before the war.

They returned to Portugal 35 years ago with a view to settle, initially in Porto, as Fernando’s family are from the North, but on visits to Ana’s family in the Algarve they decided they would like to live and make their home in Fuseta. They opened Bar Cubanito, (overlooking the water opposite the ferry terminal) in 2000, a great place with live music, from rock and roll, to jazz and reggae. After tremendous success there with their delicious salad and seafood dishes they began to think of opening a larger restaurant in the same area. Daughters Daniela Vanessa now take care of cooking there. Ana and the family have created a truly beautiful fusion of Indian, Moroccean and traditional features at Restaurant Crispim, which they opened three years ago. They were helped by family including Fernando’s sister and her husband, Alexandra and Filipe Mateus who run an architecture and interior design company, have carried out works on many local specialist

It is a very relaxing way to see the eastern end of the Algarve (and the western end of Spain) along the Guadiana which passes through some beautiful countryside, changing from very flat scenery around Vila Real de San Antonio, to a backdrop of rounded hills with lush vegetation, a few houses here and there, and castles on hilltops on both of the river banks.

The River separates Portugal from Spain, and extends from the eastern portion of Spain to the southern provinces of the Algarve. Its tributaries flow from east to west, then south to the border towns of Vila Real de San Antonio, in Portugal and Ayamonte, in Spain. From here it flows into the Gulf of Cadiz, with a course that covers a distance of 829km, and is the 4th longest in the Iberian Peninsula. We were delighted to be invited to join the scenic Riosul Boat Cruise, sailing from Vila Real, travelling along the length of the beautiful, tranquil river which is as flat and still as a pond. Watch fish jump and the birds of prey, whilst you soak up the stunning, peaceful scenery. The river is steeped in history. The Romans referred to it as the Anas, meaning of/or pertaining to ducks (quack quack). During the Moorish occupation and settlement the name was extended and referred to as Ana (being the Arab term for river) later passed on to the Portuguese and Spanish settlers as the Ouadiana and later just Odiana. I f you are the owner of a property and have rented it out in 2011, it is time to start preparing your tax return in Portugal. On all income earned in Portugal, tax must be paid. Rental income is no different. If you are a resident, the rental income is added to your worldwide income and charged at a progressive rate. As a non-resident you pay a flat rate of 15% of rental income after deductible items. Some of the more important deductible items are IMI (council tax), building insurance (excluding content) and condominium fees. Portugal has established double taxation treaties with most countries in Europe and the tax you pay here translates into a tax credit when you file your annual income return in your home Regardlesscountry. of paying your taxes, you also need to have a rental license (Licença de Alojamento Local). The original law dates back to 1997, but was never really enforced and nobody bothered. This has changed with the more recent amendments made in 2008 which at the same time simplified the requirements. There are many companies who offer assistance to obtain this license and the costs they charge for such services vary greatly. The price of the license itself varies too from council to council. The going rate varies between approx. Euro 1000 to 1200 which ESTATE LIVE, INVEST AND ESCAPE PLOTS LHV-927

Austerity measures introduced in 2011 will be followed by additional austerity measures in 2012, but this will not be enough to bring down the deficit. Expect the government to clampdown on tax evasion more than ever before.

So who is Jack? Well, he is a retired Military Policeman who drifts across the American States righting wrongs when he knows he should just walk on. He travels light, buys what he needs on the road and gets by doing odd jobs. He is both hero and anti hero. At 6 feet 5 and 18stone theres no place he can hide. It would be easy to sum up all the books as man comes to town, man gets irritated by someones attitude, man rights wrong and moves on. But, they are a little more complex than that with always a sub plot running along side the main event. He even has time to fool around with the ladies but nothing permanent you understand. He has to move on. Worth Dying For sees our hero in Nebraska. Theres nothing around for miles but open flat land. What could possibly cause a problem? An innocent drink in an overnight motel sees Reacher offering to drive a drunken doctor to see a patient. The patient turns out to be Eleanor Duncan, a battered wife of a local businessman. This is not acceptable to Reacher and off he goes. One battered businessman later with a few of his friends thrown in for good measure and the book is set for a tale of revenge with Reacher playing hide and seek in the wilds of Nebraska. Reacher is no angel and there's often gory fight scenes with him inflicting permanent damage on his foes. The book unravels the secret of the Duncans who run the area with a mixture of violence and fear whilst keeping the locals suppressed as they are the only hauliers to take away crops at harvest time. But what else do they haul? The introduction of gangs This is the 15th novel about Jack Reacher and the previous 14 have all made the best selling lists in Europe and in America. The Coventry born author has created a modern day hero for the masses that no one else can touch.

Whilst all the time the mystery cargo gets closer and closer. Throw in the story of a missing girl from years ago and wait for the story to skillfully come togethor. I wont tell you about the cargo as it links the plots, but it all comes together beautifully at the end in an orgy of violence with Reacher up against the odds. Such is the popularity of the series that Hollywood want to film a book. Now who could possibly play the hulk that is Reacher? A lone vigilante, big and scary, correct. Tom Cruise wants the part! Now I know agents are good, but I'm guessing they dont read books. Sorry Tom.

When discussing soil, we generally focus in on four things: texture, structure, pH, organic matter and fertility. Soil Texture Soil texture refers to the size of the soil particles. Sand: Sand has the largest particles and they are irregularly shaped. This is why sand feels course and also why it drains so well. Sand doesn’t compact easily. Silt: Silt particles are much smaller than sand, but still irregularly shaped.

WHAT IS HEALTHY SOIL?

Clay: Clay has microscopic sized particles that are almost flat. Clay packs very easily, leaving little to no room for air or water to move about.

S oil is often viewed as the boring part of gardening. While garden soil will never be glamorous or even as interesting as choosing plants, there is a whole world under our Wellingtons that literally and figuratively is the foundation for our gardens. New gardeners are cautioned to put money and effort into improving their soil before they even consider planting, but few appreciate the wisdom in what they are hearing until they watch their new plants struggling for survival and demanding more and more food and water. In organic gardening, you learn to feed the soil and let the soil feed the plants. The soil found in a typical garden will be about 90% mineral residue and only about 10% decayed organic matter. Yet it sustains a community of insets and microorganisms.

plants

your

Gardens

The reason for adding additional organic matter to your soil is to provide food for the beneficial microorganisms that release nutrients into the soil as they decompose the organic matter. Earthworms and other soil dwelling insects aerate the soil as they move through it and contribute still more organic matter with their waste and decomposition. This makes for what is called healthy soil. Pesticides sprayed on the plants will make its way into the soil and can kill the insects and microorganisms living there. Synthetic fertilizers contain salt, which can also kill the soil's residents as well as build up in the soil and cause harm to the plants you are feeding. And synthetic fertilizers add nothing to the soil's fertility.

ORGANIC MATTER Organic matter does so many wonderful things for a garden, it’s just silly not to take advantage of it. There would be no organic gardening without organic matter. Decaying organic matter is how plants are fed in nature. Unfortunately we’ve become very tidy landscapers and we tend to remove any dead plant material that falls onto our lawns. It would be so much more beneficial to allow the fallen leaves to blow off into the bushes, where they will not only feed the soil, they also prevent erosion and mulch the soil. Organic matter added to garden soil improves the soil structure and feeds the microorganisms and insects. The more beneficial microorganisms your soil can support, the less bad organisms will survive. The good guys feed on harmful microbes like nematodes and certain soil born diseases. They also release their nutrients into the soil when they die. So the more beneficial microorganisms that are in the soil, the more nutrients will be in the soil. And many types of organic matter add still more soil nutrients to the Organicmix. matter also contains acids that can make plant roots more permeable, improving their uptake of water and nutrients, and can dissolve minerals within the soil, leaving them available for plant roots. Types of Organic Matter Compost is the poster child of organic matter. Compost is any kind of decayed organic matter. You can make your own or buy it by the bag or truckload. Finished compost looks like rich soil. It’s dark and crumbly with an earthy smell. By the time the compost cooking process is complete, weed seeds, fungus spores and other undesirable elements that may

Soil structure refers to the way soil clumps together. You can usually determine what your texture is by testing your structure. Squeeze a handful of damp soil into a ball in your hand. If you poke the ball lightly with your finger and it breaks apart, it is probably sand. If a bit more pressure breaks it, you’re dealing with silt. If it sits there despite your poking, you have mostly clay. Do determine a more accurate reading of the percentage of each texture in your soil, try this easy experiment. A good soil structure is crumbly. This allows plant roots to work their way through it, air can pass through and water drains, but not so quickly that the plants can’t access it. There are two basic ways to improve soil structure and they work in tandem. Soil dwelling insects. As mentioned earlier, insects moving about in the soil help to aerate the soil and they add small amounts of organic matter, the second structure improver. Organic Matter. Organic matter improves any type of soil. Compost, leaf mould, manure and green manures are all decaying organic matter. They loosen and enrich soil and provide food for the soil dwelling insects. SOIL pH Soil pH is a measure of your soil's acidity (sourness, a measure of below 7.0) or alkalinity (sweetness, a measure higher than 7.0), with 7.0 being neutral. Most garden plants prefer a pH in the neutral range. Some plants are more specific in their requirements. Lilacs and clematis thrive in sweet soils. Rhododendrons and blueberries like a lower pH. You can adjust the pH in different parts of your Generallylandscape.speaking, if your plants are growing healthy and well, your pH is probably fine. If your plants are having nutrient problems or are not growing vigorously, it’s worth it to test your pH. If the soil’s pH is not within an acceptable range for the plants you are growing, the plants will not be able to access the nutrients in the soil, no matter how much you feed them. You can buy many types of pH testers in a garden centre. You can also bring a sample into your local Cooperative Extension office, to be tested for a nominal fee. Once you know what your pH is, you can begin to adjust it slowly. You add some form of lime to raise pH and a form of sulfur to lower it. What type and how much depends upon your soil and test results. Your Extension report and most testing kits will tell you what to do once you get your Addingresults. lime or sulfur to alter soil pH is not a quick fix. It can take months to register a change in the pH and you will need to periodically retest your soil to insure it doesn’t revert to its old pH. It is sometimes easier to simply change your plants to suit your pH.

Gardens Sandy Loam: Sandy loam is considered the ideal garden soil and consists of a mix of the three basic textures. However, don’t run out to buy sand to add to your clay soil or vice versa. Mixing sand and clay will give you cement. There’s more to the equation than just balancing soil textures. SOIL STRUCTURE

SOIL FERTILITY The nutrients in your soil are the final component in building healthy soil. Just like people, plants need certain nutrients to grow and to fend off disease. Organic fertilizers can be made from plant, animal or mineral sources and are basically returning what was taken from the soil. Organic fertilizers are released slowly, which means that plants can feed as they need to. There is no sudden change in the makeup of the soil which might harm the microbial Buildingactivity. healthy soil is an ongoing process. By making healthy soil a focus at the start of making a garden, you will have a head start on creating organicsustainableagarden.

Mark O’Shaughness y have gone into your compost bin, should no longer be viable. Compost can be added to your gardens at anytime, either turned into the soil or used as a mulch or top dressing. Manure Aged animal manure is an organic material with an added bonus of soil nutrients. Animal manure must be aged for 6 months to a year, before it is applied to the garden. Fresh manure will burn your plants, may contain bacteria that can cause illness from contact and it stinks. You can add fresh manure to a compost heap and let it age Cow,there.sheep and chicken manure are the most popular varieties, but there are several more. The manures to avoid because of their disease potential for humans are: cat, dog, pig and human manures.

The Earth's interior, carbon from the Earth's mantle and crust is released to the atmosphere and hydrosphere by volcanoes and geothermal sys Thetems.annual movements of carbon, the carbon exchanges between res ervoirs, occur because of various chemical, physical, geological, and biological processes. The ocean contains the largest active pool of carbon near the surface of the Earth, but the deep ocean part of this pool does not rapidly exchange with the atmosphere in the absence of an external influence, such as a black smoker or an uncontrolled deep-wa ter oil well leak.

THE ATMOSPHERE

T he carbon cycle is the bio geochemical cycle by which carbon is exchanged among the biosphere, pedosphere, geosphere, hydrosphere, and atmo sphere of the Earth. It is one of the most important cycles of the earth and allows for carbon to be recy cled and reused throughout the bio sphere and all of its organisms. The carbon cycle was initially dis covered by Joseph Priestley and Antoine Lavoisier, and popularized by Humphry Davy. It is now usually thought of as including the following major reservoirs of carbon intercon nected by pathways of exchange:

The terrestrial biosphere, which is usually defined to include fresh wa ter systems and non-living organic material, such as soil carbon.

THE OCEANS, including dissolved inorganic carbon and living and nonliving marine biota.

The global carbon budget is the bal ance of the exchanges (incomes and losses) of carbon between the carbon reservoirs or between one specific loop (e.g., atmosphere ↔ biosphere) of the carbon cycle. An examination of the carbon budget of a pool or reservoir can provide in formation about whether the pool or reservoir is functioning as a source or sink for carbon dioxide. In the Carbonbiosphereisanessential part of life on Earth. About half the dry weight of most living organisms is carbon. It plays an important role in the struc ture, biochemistry, and nutrition of all living cells. Living biomass holds about 575 gigatons of carbon, most of which is wood. Soils hold approxi mately 1,500 gigatons, mostly in the form of organic carbon, with perhaps a third of that inorganic forms of car bon such as calcium carbonate. Autotrophs are organisms that pro duce their own organic compounds using carbon dioxide from the air or water in which they live. To do this they require an external source of energy. Almost all autotrophs use solar radiation to provide this, and their production process is called photosynthesis. A small number of autotrophs exploit chemical energy sources in a process called chemo synthesis. The most important auto trophs for the carbon cycle are trees in forests on land and phytoplankton in the Earth's oceans. Photosyn thesis follows the reaction 6CO2 + 6H2O + C6H12O6 + 6O2 Carbon is transferred within the bio sphere as heterotrophs feed on other organisms or their parts (e.g., fruits). This includes the uptake of dead or ganic material (detritus) by fungi and bacteria for fermentation or decay. Most carbon leaves the biosphere through respiration. When oxygen is present, aerobic respiration occurs, which releases carbon dioxide into the surrounding air or water, follow ing the reaction C6H12O6 + 6O2 ↔ 6CO2 + 6H2O. Otherwise, anaero bic respiration occurs and releases methane into the surrounding envi ronment, which eventually makes its way into the atmosphere or hydro sphere (e.g., as marsh gas or flatu lence). Burning of biomass (e.g. forest fires, wood used for heating, anything else organic) can also transfer substan tial amounts of carbon to the atmo Carbonsphere. may also be circulated within The carbon cycle explained, and how little effect we humans have on it in the Grand Scheme.

Environment the biosphere when dead organic matter (such as peat) becomes incorporated in the geosphere. Animal shells of calcium carbonate, in particular, may eventually be come limestone through the process of sedimentation. Much remains to be learned about the cycling of car bon in the deep ocean. For example, a recent discovery is that larvacean mucus houses (commonly known as "sinkers") are created in such large numbers that they can deliver as much carbon to the deep ocean as has been previously detected by sediment traps. Because of their size and composition, these houses are rarely col lected in such traps, so most biogeochemical analyses have erroneously ignored them. Carbon storage in the biosphere is influenced by a num ber of processes on different time-scales: while net pri mary productivity follows a diurnal and seasonal cycle, carbon can be stored up to several hundreds of years in trees and up to thousands of years in soils. Changes in those long term carbon pools (e.g. through de- or affor estation or through temperature-related changes in soil respiration) may thus affect global climate change.

T he chief executives of Shell, Unilever and Phillips called it "one minute to midnight." Even the EU's own financial affairs commissioner, Olli Rehn, says Europe only has ten days to stop the euro falling apart. By this weekend, the continent's leaders are supposed to have agreed a plan that satisfies the mar kets and gives their tottering cur rency a future. They have tried, and failed, three times this year already. A fourth failure would probably be the end. But in the Brussels corridors, with the sands fast running out, you really wouldn't know that these are perhaps the most dangerous times in Europe since the Second World MarioWar. Draghi, the new head of the European Central Bank, addressed MEPs on ways out of the crisis. His speech was easily the most im portant thing said in this particular building for years. Amazingly, how ever, he made it to an almost empty chamber. Of the 736 MEPs, about 700 – or 95 per cent – were else where. Still, never mind. They had a key meeting later on the subject of "online gambling at a policy cross roads: towards an EU regulatory ap proach or increased member states' Butco-operation?"astheworld's most expen sive ship, with its glittering passen ger load of ex-social workers from Brighton and lecturers from Lower Saxony, sailed closer to the iceberg, you could hear the distinct sound of deckchair rearrangement. "I don't know whether we will have an EU in six months' time," says Sharon Bowles, the British Lib Dem MEP who chairs the parliament's economic and monetary affairs com mittee. Asked whether she meant the EU or the euro, she said: "I don't think we'll have either it's game over." If our voice is heard by José Manuel Barroso, he will suggest that we re place the current Euro, 1 for 1, with a New Euro (the Auro – Au being Gold), 15% backed by Gold. This would still leave 15% of our reserves in Gold and the new Euro would be a powerhouse and Eurobonds would be the world’s preferred investment. Then, those countries like Portugal who have husbanded their Gold re serves well will prosper instead of being faced with this austerity pro gram. Dream on!

But both eurobonds, and any use of the European Cen tral Bank as lender of last resort, have been blocked in the place that would have to pay for most of them, and which really makes the deci sions these days: Berlin. Asked to sketch out what would happen if the euro went down, one top official said: "I am trying not to think about it." There are reports, in cluding in the Economist, that com mission staff have been scrabbling around for ways to protect their sav ings, though local banks told The Sunday Telegraph that they had seen no increase in withdrawals.

The Germans' solution, as their chancellor, Angela Merkel, an nounced on Friday, is essentially to place Euro countries' taxation and spending under much tighter con trol from Brussels to stop the kind of "misbehaviour" that has got Greece and Italy into trouble. The French support the idea too, though they want it to be done inter-governmen tally rather than through the EU. Andrew Gilligan (Daily Telegraph).

ABOVE: Braga and Olhanense fans enjoy some festive cheer before their seven goal thriller. RIGHT: Drill tops and footballs donated to the junior football teams are received by club captain Rui Duarte (2nd from left)

Local sports news from Chris Wright.

Olhanense reached the last eight of the Portugal (FA) Cup for the first time in sixteen years when they beat 2nd Division Estoril, away, at the start of the month. Estoril took an early and were the better side in the firsthalf. It was only when club captain Rui Duarte replaced Mateus in the 63rd minute that the visitors started to impose their authority. With time running out and deep into stoppage time a cross from the left was handled in the penalty area by Estoril’s Steven Vitória. Up stepped club captain Rui Duarte to level the score and take the tie into extra-time. Midway through the first period of extra-time Fabiano Freitas made a world class save as Estoril pressed for the winner. Minutes later and the visitors were in front.

OlhanensecoasteraDecemberRollerfor

Substitute Yontcha swivelled sharply and volleyed the ball high into the top corner from an acute angle. More drama was to follow when Steven Vitória’s looping header dropped into the net via the bar with only seconds to play. For the second cup game in a row it would go to penalties. Rui Duarte again took responsibility for the decisive penalty to give Olhanense a 4-2 victory and a quarter-final tie away at 2nd Division Oliveirense later in the month. CHALK & CHEESE A poor performance against Academica resulted in a 2-0 home defeat but the following week a

scintillating game against SC Braga, last season’s UEFA Europa League runners-up, will give heart for the rest of the campaign. Olhanense, 2-0 up at half-time through Cauê & Yontcha, were in total command and could have had four but for fine saves by Quim from Salvador Agra and Wilson Eduardo. The second-half was a different story as Braga rattled in four goals in half-an-hour. Cauê pulled a goal back with fifteen minutes to play but then had to go in goal as Fabiano Freitas was sent-off for handling outside the area. Even so, Djalmir could have levelled the score deep into stoppage time but saw his shot fly over the bar. Despite the 4-3 defeat the Algarve side are still in mid-table.

MOSS THE STORK GETS A MAKEOVER The Olhanense Expat Supporters Group has purchased a new outfit for the Algarve’s most popular bird. The distinctive mascot, launched when Olhanense gained promotion to the Premier Liga in 2009, visits many children’s homes, orphanages, hospitals and schools where he is extremely popular. The new Moss the Stork was made by London company Diemortal Ltd who produce the costumes for many West End stage productions including ‘Lion King’. The new costume was unveiled at the ‘Os Gorilas’ & Expat Supporters Group Christmas Dinner at the Ria Formosa Restaurant, Olhão just before Christmas. Several players and members of the club’s management team joined the revellers. During the evening the group also presented twenty drill tops and sixteen footballs for use by Olhanense’s youth teams. 43www.eastalgarvemag.com REMOVALS & STORAGE LOCAL, NATIONAL & UK Packing service Mudanças e Armazenagem NEIL & EMILY “CaringRICHARDSONREMOVALSforyourpossessionsissecondnatureandwestrivetocareforyoursasiftheywereourown” TLM. +351 939 486 870 +351 939 486 807 Member of the British-Portuguese Chamber of Commerce Tel +351 281 963 191 or 0844 579 6577 (UK local) Email: www.ne-internationalremovals.comneilandem@sapo.ptApartado166,8800TAVIRA JOINERMASTERJOINER&GENERALMAINTENANCE... 20 years experience of fitting Kitchens, Floors, Doors, Decking, Locks etc. Quality reliable service, competitive prices! ne of the best tricks to check up on your timing is to get hold of your driver by the head and swing the grip end through the air – swinging as if you were striking the ball. The thick grip makes quite a swishing noise as it goes fast through the air. Where is it moving at its fastest? Where is there the most noise heard? Most golfers will notice that it comes at 3 p.m. on the clock – a whole quarter of a circle at least too late! So try to get the club to begin to make a swish at 9 o’clock. It will then, with the instinctive shoulder unwind of swinging the club normally, bring the maximum speed at around 6 o’clock - ideal! Try to bear in mind that the maximum speed comes 9 inches BEFORE the ball. Good golfing in 2012, Keith P.G.A. Resident Professional
