Welcome...

EastAlgarve M

... to our first issue of 2017. It looks like this year will be great for Portugal. 'Travel + Leisure' recently named Portugal its Destination of the Year, calling attention to the fact that U.S. travel to Portugal increased 22 percent in the last 12 months. The travel experts at Fodor’s put the country’s Minho region on their “Go List” for next year, and 'Lonely Planet' calls the Azores one of the world’s best regions to visit in 2017. 'Skift' reports Portugal’s tourism “boom” shows “no signs of slowing,” as European visitors head there in droves! We thought we should shout a little about our little corner of Portugal, so we've teamed up with 'Alquimia' who are helping to promote the region, and also meet the wonderful Vilma Edmonds who is also singing the praises of the Eastern Algarve and setting up a haven for people to visit during the long U.K. winter. All this plus our regular features including; gardening, finance, sport, health, golf and much more! Have a great new year. Editor

aro town hall has unveiled a multi-million euro makeover during the course of 2017. The Algarve capital has set aside 3.4 million euros that will be used to renovate public spaces, improve city streets and squares while also refurbishing children’s play parks. Overall, Faro Town Hall has set aside close to 40 million euros for the coming year’s budget and is predicting that 2017 will see it emerge from its current state of debt.

C

ortugal’s ‘National Entity for the Fuel Market’, or ENMC formally has proposed to the Government that the deposit lodged by the Partex-Repsol oil exploration consortium should be forfeit due to the failure of the companies to comply with their work plan as detailed in the contract. The oil exploration contracts, which the last government signed with the RepsolPartex consortium, stated that the first offshore well in the Algarve exploration area would be drilled in 2016. The government has decided to terminate these contracts as no drilling has taken place, much to the joy of antioil protestors and Algarve residents. The ENMC has already proposed the execution of the deposit bond, this

has been confirmed by a source close to the Secretary of State for Energy, and the ENMC now has to listen to interested parties within a set deadline before being able to bank the €4.5 million deposit. The agreement entered into with Repsol and Partex provided for exploration, research, development and the production of oil in the Algarve basin. The consortium planned to drill a hole 40 to 50 kilometres off the coast of the Algarve, to the south of Faro. This the consortium has failed to do, due to the publicity triggered by an effective anti-oil movement and the continuing low price of oil on the international market.

Human remains found under Faro parking lot

ivil engineering contractors working in the Largo das Mouras Velhas in the centre of Faro have unearthed an ancient burial site. Work in the carpark near the Lethes Theatre had to be suspended while the grim discovery was analyzed and catalogued by specialists. The council says that this sort of thing is par for the course and that work already has restarted: "it is a normal situation,"

stated the town hall spokesman. The discovery was reported by the contractors and experts from the municipal museum soon were on site to have a look, photograph and catalogue the bones which had been disturbed by the digging. "It is not the first time that remains have been discovered in thais place as it’s an area where burials are known to have taken place," say the council. The bones are said to be around 400

years old. The engineering work in the area began earlier in December with the council aiming to tidy up a square which acts as one of the city’s few remaining free parking areas. As part of Faro council’s planned expenditure on renewing tatty areas, the square is to be landscaped and repaved - hopefully it will remain free to park there.

pH balance A

After the Festive season celebrations, it's time to give your body a health check and re-balance your pH levels.

fter the Christmas and the holiday season, with all the food excesses and also with all the related stress, we need to give special attention to our health. During this season, our body pH tends to get a little bit more acid than usual, therefore, it´s very important to have a slightly alkaline pH, since acidity is detrimental to health. An acid body is conducive to the development of bacteria, yeast and many diseases. To avoid this situation, the body itself is responsible for removing minerals from vital organs and bones to neutralize the pH, trying to decrease acidity. Therefore, under these conditions, we may be deprived of calcium, sodium, potassium and magnesium - a problem that may go undetected for a long time. Fortunately, we can contribute to the proper functioning of the body. Just avoid eating some acidic foods, such as: meat (mainly in excess, dairy Products, sugar, and

8

also through some natural detoxing supplements. If the acidic organism is not treated in time, we will certainly suffer some damage caused by acidosis (pH imbalance), such as: sensitive and inflamed gums, immune deficiency, sciatica, low back pain and stiff neck, respiratory problems, shortness of breath and cough, excess fungi (like candida), lack of disposition and chronic fatigue, cardiovascular damage, poor blood circulation and oxygen reduction, heart problems, arrhythmia, increased heart rate, weight gain, obesity and diabetes, infection of the bladder and kidneys, premature aging, nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea, osteoporosis, brittle bones and hip fractures, headaches, confusion and drowsiness, joint pain, muscle pain and lactic acid buildup, allergies, skin problems. The normal pH for all body fluids is alkaline except that of the stomach. Although, the body is able to neutralize the acidity of the blood, this is not a healthy alternative, as it

damages other systems of the body, leading to serious problems. To find out how your blood pH is, it is important to understand that it can range from 6.75 to 7.25 while remaining in a healthy state. The best way to balance blood pH is through your diet, but sometimes the body needs extra help from the detoxing supplements that contain calcium, iron, magnesium, potassium and sodium, which are the main alkalizing minerals, and some specialised counselling about your diet. However, it is good to know that most foods are composed of acid and alkaline minerals at the same time - all we need to know is what predominates most. Our body is designed to have limits, with balance in mind. So, any imbalance is harmful. Natural medicine believes that the food we eat has a direct impact on our health. he Cultural Association of Tavira, the Bartolomeu dos Santos Workshop is developing a project under the 365 Algarve program. Working with the support of the Municipal Councils of Loulé, São Brás de Alportel and Tavira, they have also combined partnerships with various companies, traditional restaurants, professional artists and scientists to promote rural tourism. Its goal is to explore the less known cultural Algarve and give the visitor a different experience to the obvious wealth of sunshine and fabulous beach life and to experience the Algarve out of the summer season. Through four distinct programs and under the motto of the four elements –

10

Fire, Air, Earth and Water – they propose experiences of proximity, enjoyment and learning. Through gastronomy, artistic production and with education and knowledge they strive to bring recognition of the natural and cultural heritage and therefore create a different “sense of place”. Professional and informative workshops, meetings, and guided tours have been arranged around the Eastern Algarve: Ria Formosa, Serra do Caldeirão, and Barracol and with carefully selected partners, specialists, scientists and artists, as well as trails to inaccessible places. You will be given the opportunity to taste, touch and experience a more authentic Algarve.

FLOR DE Flor De Sal - The Best Salt Of The Algarve

S

alt. What could be simpler than that. We have been using salt for thousands of years to spice up our food and to preserve food as well. But there actually are quite a lot of differences. The salt harvested from sea water in the Algarve is a very high quality sea salt, but the top of the line is definitely the Flor de Sal - the flower of salt. What is Flor de Sal? Through evaporation by sun and wind, a thin

16

glistening layer of flaky salt crystals will start to float on the surface of the salt pans. This layer is manually removed on a daily basis during the summer months. The result of this intense work is Flor de Sal, a delicate, 100% natural gourmet salt that retains all the benefits of the sea. No brighteners or any chemical agents are involved. The Algarve Flor do Sal is internationally respected, as demonstrated by the high quality certification attributed to this salt by

www.eastalgarvemag.com

Culture

SAL

the French Association Nature & Progres. The climatic conditions of the Algarve are ideal for producing salt. The hot, dry summers guarantee natural evaporation by sun and wind. The harvest ends with the beginning of the first autumnal rain. Most of the sea salt in the Algarve comes from the Ria Formosa Natural Park in the eastern Algarve. There are various quality levels of marine salt to be distinguished: Flor de Sal, Sal tradicional and Sal do Mar.

www.eastalgarvemag.com

Flor de Sal: Flor de Sal is the finest flower of sea salt. It appears as a thin layer floating on the surface of the brine. Artisan salt gatherers use handcrafted, butterfly-shaped sieves - ‘borboletas’ - to skim the flower of sea salt crystals from the water’s surface. The skilled artisans instinctively know when they have skimmed the very best flakes, by the sound the sieve makes. These first fragile crystals are only sun dried before packing.

17

People

Sal Tradicional: This unprocessed sea salt comes from small traditional crystallizer ponds. Salt crystals originate from the concentrating brine and precipitate to the clay bottom of the ponds. The salt is harvested every 10 to 14 days, by hand with wooden rakes, and shaped into piles beneath the pans. Sun drying maintains the natural moisture and the sea water's minerals. Sal do Mar: At the end of the season this quality salt is harvested by small machinery, in most cases

18

by a carefully guided mini loader. The salt cristals are of a more solid structure. Thus, Sal do Mar is often sold ground and is a little less soluble in water. The superior taste of Flor de Sal: The young, fragile crystals grow for a few hours only before they are gathered. The way Flor de Sal is produced makes it rich in minerals such as calcium, potassium, and magnesium. It is this specific composition, which gives Flor de Sal its distinctive flavour. A flavour, which is a world away from common table salt and other, processed sea salts.

www.eastalgarvemag.com

How to use it: Flor de Sal is the perfect finishing salt for everyday use and brings a special taste to all prepared dishes. Its smooth flakes crumble between the fingers and melt on the tongue. Sprinkled over any prepared dish, the salt adds a delicate, subtle taste and enhances the intrinsic flavours of the ingredients. How to store it: Flor de Sal should be stored in a way that keeps its natural moisture, the so-called ‘mother liquor’. This preserves minerals and essential elements contained in the natural

www.eastalgarvemag.com

sea salt such as magnesium, potassium, and calcium. Chemical composition: Tested on a regular basis, Flor de Sal is free of toxic substances such as heavy metals, nitrates and pesticides. Typical analytical values: Sodium Chloride (NaCl) 97% (in dry matter) Moisture 6.5%, Calcium (Ca) 0.1% Magnesium (Mg) 0.4%, Potassium (K) 0.2%, Iron (Fe) 5 mg/kg, Insolubles < 0.02%, pH 8.5. Buying

A beginners guide to

Auctions

Brought to you by Auction House Algarve.

D

on’t worry – one sneeze and you’ve bought a priceless Monet – those days are over! You certainly don’t need to be a millionaire to buy at Auctions these days. They are a great place to find that unique item of furniture you have been dreaming of owning, a piece of artwork that comes with a history attached or a special gift for someone. Auctions are fun and easy to do. How to get started Pretty much all Auction Houses will advertise their catalogues in advance so that you can browse items on line

from the comfort of your own home and will also have Open Days, just ahead of the Auction itself, where the items can be viewed (and sometimes handled – with care!). Be sure to register interest with the Auction House by adding yourself to their subscribers list. Take advantage of the viewing days if you can – often there are little gems that no photo in a catalogue can do justice to – and nothing beats seeing items for yourself. There may be just the thing you were after buried in amongst a collection – always worth a look. You will be able to ask questions about whatever you are interested in and

decide how much you are prepared to pay for it. Any decent Auctioneer will be able to guide you as to anticipated sale price – although of course, that’s the fun of an Auction – things are only worth what someone is prepared to pay for it on the day! Items may have a reserve price and again you can clarify this in advance of the day. Do your research and then you will feel more prepared for the Auction day itself. We have heard so many times “I would have bid on that had I realised just how nice it was!” Bidding at Auction. There are several ways you can bid at Auction. The most obvious, and undoubtedly the most fun, is to be there in person. You will need to register on arrival to be sure to have your unique bidding number and then take a seat and enjoy the theatre! Alternative ways to bid are by telephone or on line, where you can follow the Auction live. Again you will have to register your intent with the Auction House so that they are ready and prepared for your bid. Of course, there are additional fees (such as buyer’s premium and tax) to pay over and above the hammer price and these will be clearly explained to you on registration. Try very hard to set yourself a maximum price – and stick to it – or you may be a little shocked at the end of the day! Here at Auction House Algarve we are always happy to help you if you are new to the world of Auctions. Why not pop along to the next General Auction (held on the 1st Saturday of the month) at 10am and watch us in action, or check out our web site at ahalgarve.com? Just a word of warning though – Auctions can be addictive – but that’s fine by us – we’d look forward to seeing you every month! For details see our advertisement on page 5, or Tel. 914 774 438.

istorically the period for selling property in the Algarve is underway. It is that time of year when many home owners make the decision to sell their properties and the time when we encourage our existing vendors to take a moment to look for ways to improve the presentation of their property. This is something we have written about before but it is such an important subject it is worth reiterating. First impressions are crucial to anybody who is looking to buy a new home, that is why it is your job to ensure that your property is looking fresh and clean as opposed to dirty or untidy. You do not need to be a DIY expert or a top interior designer to make a real difference to your home. By simply taking the time to put a little effort into the presentation, you can vastly improve the perception of your property and beat the current competition in the market. DE-CLUTTER This is such a simple task and yet makes a huge difference to your property. Potential buyers want to view spacious and tidy homes. Simply remove any unnecessary items out of view by storing them in cupboards or drawers or by having a proper clear out. It is important to hide the family photographs and other items which personalise your property. The potential buyer needs to imagine themselves living in the property and if it is littered full of personal objects such as family portraits, etc, then they will find it more difficult to do. In order to create a better ambience it would

www.eastalgarvemag.com

Property make more sense to hang a large mirror in the hallway than to be greeted by a 6 foot carved wooden giraffe purchased on your last trip to Kenya. FINISH ODD JOBS Taking time to repair a leaking tap in the kitchen, replace a broken terrace tile or paint the entrance gates are an example of some of the ways, as owners, you can improve the chance of selling your property. Even the easiest and inexpensive tasks such as replacing light bulbs will help in the presentation of a property. ELIMINATE SMELLS Bad smells and odours are the biggest turn off to any potential buyer. Certain smells such as cigarette smoke, pet food or mould can linger on fabrics and in the air and whilst you may have grown accustomed to them, your viewers will not. We live in a country with fantastic weather so take advantage of this and open all windows and doors to air the property thoroughly before any viewing. Another way to beat those bad odours is by cleaning

your rugs and curtains, putting fresh bedding on or even preparing a pot of coffee before the viewing takes place. CLEAN, CLEAN, CLEAN This is the most important thing you can do to help sell your home. If your property is looking well lived in and unappealing, then an intense clean can make it appear far more attractive and inviting. Most potential buyers find it difficult to be impressed when they see dirt and grime in a property, so clean every surface until it shines and scrub those floor and terrace tiles until they gleam taking the opportunity to declutter as you go. AND FINALLY…..... Please let us do our jobs and remember it is always better if the vendor steps out of the property when the agent arrives with the potential buyer. Purchasers are rarely honest about a property in front of the owners and as agents we need them to be open with us so we can address and solve any issues that arise. Take the opportunity to take

your dog for a deserved walk as, whilst it is adorable to most, some buyers do not want your excitable Labrador jumping up onto their clean blue Polo shirt. For further advice and individual assistance on how to make the best of your property to encourage a quicker sale please contact our helpful Land & Houses Algarve Team on 281 320 281 to make an appointment. We look forward to hearing from you...... New Year

RESOLOUTION We can all do our bit for the environment by Garden Recycling.

B

y recycling or repurposing waste materials you can save money while doing your bit to go green – one man’s trash really is another’s treasure! SEED SOWING AND PLANT LABELLING Old yogurt pots are the perfect size for seed sowing – just puncture holes into the base for drainage. Old fruit boxes make excellent miniature seed trays, while toilet roll tubes are ideal for starting off deeper-rooted veggies such as peas, beans and corn. You can also sow rows of peas into surplus lengths of guttering. Polystyrene cups make fun-sized containers for children to grow small salad crops such as radishes. Pinch holes out at the base of the cup to make drainage holes. Newspaper can be easily made into pots. Fold one page in half lengthways and roll it around a toilet roll tube so that the tube sticks out above the folded edge of the paper. Gather up and push in the loose ends of the paper, remove the tube then fill with potting soil. At planting time, leave the paper pot in place – it will just rot away in the ground. Make your own plant labels by cutting out strips of yogurt pot, or re-use lollipop sticks. Write on the labels with a permanent marker. Lengths of batten make excellent semi-permanent labels, ideal for marking out the ends of rows.

Gardens

PROTECTING PLANTS Many plants need protection from the cold and wind when first planted out. Cut clear plastic drinks bottles in half to make two miniature greenhouses to pop over individual plants. Keep lids screwed on during cold nights or remove during the day to prevent the seedlings from overheating. Bubble wrap from postal deliveries makes fantastic temporary insulation on frosty nights, while polystyrene fish boxes provide a cosy microclimate around seed trays, especially when combined with a heat mat underneath. Old windows can be used to make a cold frame. Attach them to a wooden frame using new or second-hand hinges, then screw in handles at the front and slant the window to face the sun. Crops can be protected from pests such as pigeons by draping old net curtains over canes topped with upturned pots – or, dangle old CDs on coloured string, or cover young plants with hanging basket frames. Make a low tunnel by pushing down lengths of old plastic water pipe onto sturdy upright pegs to create hoops, then fix protective netting, fleece or mesh over your hoops. CREATIVE CONTAINERS

36

Literally anything that holds potting soil makes a good container. Try planting in old pans, colanders, laundry baskets, chests of drawers, or use metal objects such as plastic milk bottles, coal buckets or water tanks for a lovely rustic look. Recycle

food tins as they are, or painted to give an injection of colour. Make sure your intended container has enough drainage holes, or add your own. Use old potting soil sacks for root vegetables such as carrots or potatoes. Other ideas for recycled bag containers include sturdy grocery store bags, rubble or builders’ bags, and hessian sacks. RECYCLED WOOD Old planks of wood are widely available, and are less likely to warp than new wood. By reusing them you’ll avoid the need to cut down more trees. Untreated wood is best, as some older wood treatments may contain toxic chemicals that can leach into the soil. Make a compost bin by nailing planks to corner posts, create a plant stand by securing timber onto A-frames, or screw battens together to form a crop protection frame. Make seed trays, fences, window boxes, or even the garden shed – the possibilities are endless! Timber makes goodlooking raised beds. Simply fix thick planks to each other or screw

thinner lengths of timber to corner posts hammered into the ground to anchor the bed. OTHER IDEAS… Any number of scraps and garden cast-offs could be used to create a handsome hotel for beneficial bugs. Tires lined with plastic or hessian sacks make instant raised beds and can be stacked up for vegetables such as potatoes that need lots of root space. Salvage old paving slabs to create stepping stones or paths between beds, or box in compost heaps with corrugated metal sheets. These are just a few ideas to make the most of what you might otherwise throw away. Here are some household liquids that we can use instead of harmful chemicals to protect our environment ASPIRIN Dissolve 3/4 of an uncoated aspirin tablet in 1 gallon of water. Spray plants every 2-3 weeks with the mixture to prevent fungus problems, including powdery mildew and black spot. It’s also been found to help some plants yield more fruit than using commercial fertilizers. BAKING SODA Mix 1 Tbsp of baking soda and a 1/2

www.eastalgarvemag.com

Luz de Tavira

tsp liquid soap into 1 gallon of water. Spray this weekly on plants that are prone to powdery mildew. This works as more of a preventative, as it won’t do much after the powdery mildew has taken hold. Make sure to spray the undersides of leaves. Also, apply it in the evening if you can, as it can burn some leaves. BEER Put beer (or water with yeast in it) in a shallow container. Sink the container so that the lip is at ground level in the garden. The beer attracts snails and slugs. They'll fall into it and drown. BORAX This is a common laundry additive. But it also works as a nontoxic ant killer. Ants are a huge problem for us as they “farm” aphids and mealy bugs preventing the ladybird bugs from feeding. DRYER SHEETS If you’re having a picnic or BBQ and are being plagued mosquitoes, place dryer sheets around the area to deter them. EGGSHELLS Save all of your eggshells! Rinse them and then crush them when they are dry. When preparing a planting bed for tomatoes or peppers add the eggshells (approximately the shells

To Tavira Look out for the Yellow flags

from 1 dozen eggs per plant) to the planting hole to avoid blossom end rot. They are also a good slug preventive, the slugs do not like to walk on them. EPSOM SALTS Epsom salts contain sulphur and magnesium and are good for using as a foliar fertilizer. Dissolve 2 Tbsp Epsom salts in 1 gallon of water. Mist plants as a foliar feeding. MILK Dilute milk in a 1:1 ratio with water. Spray your tomato and pepper plants weekly to avoid blossom end rot. RUBBING ALCOHOL Apply 70 percent isopropyl alcohol to a cotton ball and apply to scale insects. The alcohol desiccates them. Rub them off when they’re dead. SHAMPOO Mix 2-1/2 Tbsp Shampoo and 2-1/2 Tbsp cooking oil with 4 1/2 litres of water. Spray insect pests with the mixture to control them. Do not use in full sun, and a few hours after application, rinse the plant off to reduce injury. If some of us use some of these ideas it helps to reduce the landfill and creates a lovely garden..

Expert financial advice By Gavin Scott, Senior Partner, Blevins Franks

I

Is Your Tax And Wealth Management In Shape For 2017?

t is that time of the year when many people make New Year resolutions to improve their life in one way or another. Whether or not you do this, it is a good time to consider whether you need to review your financial planning. To protect your financial security through retirement, and achieve your wishes for your heirs, you should have a strategic tax and wealth management plan to cover your investments, tax planning, pension funds and estate planning. You need to consider global and local developments that may affect your finances in the coming year, as well as have a long-term strategy. Any changes in your personal circumstances also warrant a review. Savings and investments 2016 was certainly an interesting year, with Brexit and US elections. More recently the Italian referendum could add uncertainty for the Eurozone. Diversification is more important than ever. Do you have a long-term strategic asset allocation plan specifically designed around your circumstances, needs and risk profile? There are various levels of diversification you should have in your investment portfolio – 1) Asset allocation – spreading your capital across different asset classes 2) Diversification across geographical areas, sectors, company size etc. 3) Owning equities and bonds issued by a range of companies 4) Utilising a multi-manager approach to diversify across

www.eastalgarvemag.com

managers and styles. 5) Currencies. The starting point is to obtain a clear and objective assessment of your appetite for risk to ensure your portfolio is suitable for you. You should then review your investments around once a year to rebalance them if necessary. Tax planning Take specialist advice so your investments and wealth are arranged in the most effective, up-to-date way to limit your tax liabilities. The right tax-efficient arrangement can keep most of your investments in one place and help you legitimately avoid paying too much tax. If you are not yet tax resident here, ask about Portugal’s Non-Habitual Resident regime, which provides beneficial tax treatment for the first 10 years of residence. The global automatic exchange of information regime under the Common Reporting Standard is now in force. The first data will be exchanged in 2017, with more countries following next year. Cross-border tax planning is complex, so ensure you are declaring income and paying tax in the right country. Estate planning Establish your goals: Who would you like to benefit from your estate? Are you happy for them to have control over the money? When should they receive the funds? How much tax will they have to pay on their inheritance? Then obtain specialist advice to ensure that your estate plan is specifically set up to achieve your wishes for your heirs.

his year, before you submit your IRS for the year 2016, you need to perform some tasks as per the new habits acquired in the previous year: validating invoices, registering them, and appending information are examples of procedures that have become part of the routine of any taxpayer. Your role is important in determining your IRS deductions, therefore, check the tax calendar, to make sure you don’t lose any deductions or have to pay any fines. FEBRUARY 15 Each taxpayer has until the 15th of February to query, report and verify invoices. To do this you should access the E-Factura portal and access to your personal page, where you should verify if all your invoices have been properly communicated. If you find any failure, or any invoice is not recorded, you can add these invoices to your file. It’s also important to check in which category your invoices are recorded. Please note that it’s necessary to move your invoices into the appropriate section (ie health, education, etc)

Meeting VILMA EDMONDS

Meet the wonderful Vilma, who in her 70's is embarking on her latest project which will introduce people to the East Algarve and also give people who live here the chance to visit other culturally enriching places.

B

orn in Buckinghamshire, Vilma Edmonds met her husband Wilfred at the age of 27 during one of her frequent yearly visits to Europe from New York, while working as a secretary fund raising for Cornell university. Husband Wilfred Meynell was the overseas director of Schweppes which was later to become part of Cadbury. It was during this time that he masterminded the advertising campaign using the colourful tiles with the logo 'Schweppes Algarve',

42

many of which can still be seen today. Together they went on to live in Sloane street, Belgravia, London. Over the next 7 years that Vilma calls a "drastic learning curve", wherein she literally lost everything, but then as she says in her usual positive way: "that's another story". Vilma found herself being Chairwoman on her local residents association, which involved helping the local community. She found this to be a roll which put her in a position to make things happen, leading her

from strength to strength, gradually building confidence and the ability to re-build her life. She eventually bought a studio apartment to refurbish and let out, and before she knew it, found herself in the property business, developing properties in the West Sussex area. Vilma had spent a lot of time in the Algarve with her husband, and her brother had a home close to Tavira. It was during these visits she had fallen in love with the Eastern Algarve. Vilma won't mind us saying that she's in her 70's and is a truly remarkable

and inspiring person, currently in the midst of starting her new company 'A better winter life' based in the stunning Fabrica, Eastern Algarve. We asked Vilma why she loves this area so much. She replied "It makes me feel so alive, so well and so happy. The simple things; peace, tranquility and friendly people". She adds "Fabrica and the surrounding area, with the climate and special air, seems to make older people look and feel younger". Of course this wasn't enough for Vilma. She went on to do some research to find out why this area was so special, and reported

44

back that 'It is where three different masses of water; the Mediterranean Sea, the North Atlantic and the south Atlantic meet, and the confluence of water and wind creates a special climate, unique to the eastern Algarve'. Her dream is to give other people the opportunity to experience this by bringing older people here, who may be alone in the U.K. Vilma is aware of how difficult and lonely it can be when your children are busy with their own lives, working and bringing up the grandchildren, explaining that she feels these people really should

be looking at this stage of their lives as a 'new beginning', rather than just existing and watching time pass by, reminiscing of days gone by. She wants to inspire people to get up and make the most of their lives during the winter in the U.K. and enjoy the outdoor life, the healthy Mediterranean diet, and experience the wonderful Eastern Algarve. While spending time here, her clients will have the opportunity to enjoy Cultural Trips which will be a great way to meet like-minded people. Currently scheduled are trips such as the Douro Valley and Minho

tour, Silves tour, Desert Island tour, Alcoutim Mountain and River tour, Evora tour. As Vilma has already researched these trips extensively, she can of course offer the same trips to people who already live here in the Algarve. It's a great opportunity to see these wonderful places, knowing that your trip is well planned, and accommodation is of an excellent standard. With her motto of 'love life' Vilma is the ideal person to do this, full of character and life, a true inspiration... and believe it or not, this is just the beginning of 'Vilma's places'... but as she says, "That's another story". Old Footballers Festive Feast

T

he eagerly awaited third annual Walking Football Christmas Dinner and Zimmer Awards ceremony attracted a record attendance at the Churrasqueira O Franguinho restaurant in Olhão. Soccer Olhanense Strollers (SOS) ‘A’ – winners of the Browns (Vilamoura) Walking Football Tournament; SOS ‘B’ and Tavira Old Footballers teams have had a successful year and duly received commemorative awards. Jonathan Syed introduced the Zimmer Awards – Walking Football’s equivalent to the Oscars – which went to ‘Player of the Year’ Andy Smith; ‘Clubman of the Year’ Paul Johnson and ‘Most Improved Player’ Andrew Mitchell. Walking Football, for those of 50 years+, continues to grow in the Algarve and future events include a challenge match against the Tottenham Hotspur Legends for the Graham Roberts Challenge Cup and the defence of the Albufeira WF Cup in March when teams from the UK will provide testing opposition. ANGUISH BUT AIR OF OPTIMISM

T

he marked improvement in SC Olhanense results – three victories and three draws – came to an abrupt end as high flying Santa Clara nipped over from the Azores to snatch all three points. Two goals down at the break, the home side reduced the arrears when Aldair fired in an unstoppable shot that arrowed into far corner of the net. Salim Cissé (66 '), Gonzalez Prado (84') and Redolfi (90 '+ 4) had opportunities to level the score but lacked the vital finishing touch. The islanders took every opportunity to break-up up the play and some of their ‘play acting’ would not have been out of place in a Christmas pantomime! A few days later Segunda Liga leaders SC Portimonense made the short trip along the coast to Olhão. Top versus bottom but the neutral supporter would have been hard pressed to pick out which was which! In a live televised match, a superb advert for the beautiful game, it was the visitors who got the rub of the green as Paulinho knew little about his sixtieth minute goal that ricocheted off his shin and crept over the line. Olhanense remain bottom on thirteen points but there is a confident mood amongst fans that Bruno Baltazar’s team can climb away from danger.

TOP RIDERS INVADE THE ALGARVE

wenty-four teams from fifteen countries will compete in the 43rd Volta ao Algarve from the 15th to 19th February. Thibaut Pinot, third at the 2014 Tour de France, will be one of the main contenders for the yellow jersey, along with last year’s winner Welshman Geraint Thomas MBE of TeamSky. The 194kms penultimate stage of the event, on Saturday 18th February, from São Brás de Alportel to Tavira promises to be one of the most exciting. Burning up the tarmac through Loulé, Salir, Cachopo, Martim Longo, Alcoutim and Castro Marim; the teams will finish in front of Tavira’s sports centre in Avenida Zeca Afonso. www.voltaaoalgarve.com

A YEAR TO REMEMBER

P

ortugal finally lifted a major international football trophy as they triumphed at the EURO Championships in France. Whilst Cristiano Ronaldo was off the pitch when Edér scored the winning goal, there can be no denying that The world superstar has had yet another remarkable year. At the FIFA Club World Cup in Japan in December he scored the 40th hat-trick of his illustrious Real Madrid career as the La Liga leaders beat Japanese underdogs Kashima Antlers 4-2 in the final. In a calendar year that saw Ronaldo score 52 goals in 54 games, including six hat-tricks, he once again bear Lionel Messi to pick up his fourth Ballon d’Or. The 31 yearold Madeira born superstar shows no signs slowing up but could he be tempted by the vast sums of money being offered by clubs in China. Cristiano Ronaldo currently earns €430,000 perweek, €40,000 per-week less than Oscar will get at Shanghai SIPG and far less than the eyewatering €722,000 per-week that Carlos Tevez gets at Shanghai Shun.

Bunker play

This month's tip from Monte Rei Golf and Country Club.

I

n my time at Monte Rei I have seen many players take three or four shots in a bunker using the wrong club and poor technique with the eventual result of the ball being picked up or just thrown onto the green. Bunkers are a hazard and should be avoided where possible; however it is inevitable that from time to time your ball will come to rest in a trap. This tip will help you play bunker shots with confidence and without fear! Always use a sand iron, this club is built differently to all others in your set and has a bounce angle to help you get out of the sand. The correct way to play out of bunkers is to set up and aim your body, stance and shoulders left of the flagstick about two or three yards. The clubface should be open to your aim and pointing slightly to the right of the flagstick. Position the ball forward in your stance, in line with the inside of your left heel, this will ensure the sand is struck before the ball. Swing back to a position where your lead arm is parallel to the ground and the club shaft is pointing towards the sky; accelerate through to a full finish striking the sand aggressively 1 inch before the ball. Try to imagine the ball lying on a ten euro note and being removed without damaging the note!
