New festival to highlight beauty of Algarve’s almond blossom

A

new hiking festival that aims to highlight the beauty of the Algarve’s blossoming almond trees will be held for the first time in the rural community of Alta Mora in Castro Marim. Taking place on the first two days of February, the ‘Festival das Amendoeiras em Flor’ is being organised due to the massive success of a series of hikes held in the area focusing on exploring almond blossom routes. The festival is part of the “365 Algarve” cultural programme, which highlights events in the low season. Another goal is to showcase the potential of the Algarve’s inland and hilltop areas as a tourist attraction. As organisers explain: “Midway through January, we see the Algarve’s landscape changing. While

With a huge selection of gifts, mementos and traditional Portuguese ware, Aroma Loja is your one stop shop to ensure a visit to Tavira is remembered. Visit our three shops in Tavira or our website www.aromaceramica.pt

6

usually covered in shades of green and brown, fields start to be covered in shades of pink and white from the almond trees in bloom, providing one of the season’s most beautiful landscapes.” Organisers also hope that the event will encourage the plantation of more almond trees in a bid to bolster the potential of the almond as one of the region’s iconic products. Apart from the many hikes that are planned, the festival will also feature street entertainment, workshops, delicious food and live music. There will be a €14 fee to take part in the hikes which will include breakfast, lunch, beverages and insurance. Price for children aged six to 12 is €8. For more information, contact Associação Recreativa, Cultural e Desportiva dos Amigos da Alta Mora (ARCDAA). 965 284 657 | arcdaa@gmail.com

‘give box’ has been set up at Tavira’s municipal market, encouraging people to donate items that they no longer use. The idea is that anyone can leave an item inside the box in the hope that it will be taken by someone who wants or needs it. “We all have things that we no longer want and are in good condition, but we do not know what to do with them” says the main promoter of the initiative, Associação Fazedores de Mudança. “In this era of mass production which goes way beyond our basic needs, there are tons of objects that are quickly discarded which could still serve their purpose” it explains. However, only items that “are useful and in good condition” should be left inside the box, such as books, CDs, vinyl records, toys, schoolbooks and school supplies, games, clothes, kitchenware, household items, tools and even bicycles. Food, medicine and broken objects should not be left inside the ‘give box’. The initiative is promoted by Associação Fazedores de Mudança with the support of Tavira Council, Tavira Parish Union and CNEAgrupamento 100 de Tavira. michael.bruxo@ algarveresident.com

Caring for an older pet Pet care during the festive season

O

ur oldest dog (Harvey) turned 15 just a few weeks ago, which is equivalent to about 80 HOOMAN years. We’ve had Harvey since he was a puppy of just 8 weeks so the way we look after him has obviously changed in that time, increasingly so in the last few years. We wanted to share our experiences in the hope it will be of help to others with older pets. One of the biggest changes has been to how we exercise Harvey. Gone are the long country walks and instead we now give him shorter, but more frequent walks, as these are better suited to his energy levels. What’s been of particular interest has been how bored Harvey gets with walking the same streets every day, even though he’s only lived in Portugal for little over a year! It has been lovely however to see how his energy returns when he visits somewhere new and of course, with a trip to the beach. So instead of a long walk, we’ve taken to driving Harvey somewhere new, for a shorter walk with new smells and experiences, something he really enjoys. Our grooming of Harvey has changed considerably. He no longer has the patience for a two hour groom every couple of months, so instead we provide him with more frequent and shorter grooms. We encourage the same with the older dogs we groom - many older dogs appreciate and need a regular brush and pamper, but become restless with a longer groom. Harvey has been deaf for several years and his eyesight is failing. He also has issues with his back legs which are weakening. Our Tavira based vet has been excellent and regular visits to the vet and supplements have helped with his legs, enabling him to live a relatively normal and enjoyable life. We have also kept a

8

close eye on his paws and nails to keep them in check. As he is walking less his nails are growing much quicker, so we keep them well clipped, as nails which are too long can cause discomfort. Without proper care, dental disease can pose a problem, particularly for older pets. Indeed, veterinarians find evidence of dental disease in many pets as early as 2-3 years of age. If nothing is done to care for your dog’s mouth, by the time your dog is older he may even have lost some teeth. Dental disease can also be painful, causing difficulty when eating. Regular brushing and professional cleaning – such as that we provide at The Spotted Dog - can prevent painful dental disease and decay. If your dog doesn’t enjoy having their teeth brushed, consider dental treats and toys instead. Harvey’s diet has improved, with the help of our vet who diagnosed him with a vitamin deficiency. We now feed him the Hepatic dry food which at €60 for 12kg is not cheap, but it helps his digestion and the little man is worth it. We also work hard to keep his weight in check, so we’re far more sparing with those little treats. Finally, we take particular care with Harvey’s bedding to make sure it is nice and clean – he is prone to the occasional accident – and during these cooler nights we keep the heating on to make sure he’s comfortable. Just as modern medicine has extended the lives of us HOOMANS, with the right combination of attention and preventive care, it can also extend the lives of our pets and give them a good quality of life as they grow older. By having your pet professional groomed on a regular basis, and brushing them between groomings, you can optimise your pet’s physical and mental health.

More information on the benefits of professional dog grooming is available on our website at: https://www.thespotteddog.net/

press UP

So after all the festive indulgences here’s January’s exercise tip.

L

et’s continue with the wall squat from December and add in a press up! These can be performed anywhere as it’s another body weight exercise and they can be performed various ways! Up against a wall or as a box press up on the floor are the easiest. Then you could go for how I’m doing it in the picture or on a park bench; just make sure it’s a stable surface. Do a three quarter press up on the floor then into a full press up! You want to keep your hands out to the side in-line with your chest, elbows at a

90 degree angle, keep your core braced at all times and make sure to keep your body in-line and do not allow your hips to drop down as this will put pressure on your lower back! Breath in as you lower your body towards the floor and exhale as you use your muscles to push back up to the start position again! Try and perform these for a minute! If you would like to find out more and book a consultation, contact me on carlyrichards@yahoo.com or call on 926617732 Wishing you all a happy and healthy 2020.

A

dancer in a later

stage of life J

oining a friend one Saturday morning at a market cafe, I was introduced to Yngve Horn, a former ballet dancer who now enjoys retirement in Tavira. This month he honoured me with an interview. Beth: What inspired you to make that huge effort to become a ballet dancer? Yngve: My father encouraged me in sport, in everything, skating, swimming, and especially in gymnastics. You know, you have different disciplines, like working with rings or ropes, or the horse, and then you have freestyle on the floor. This was my weak point, and so my father sent me to a ballet school to help me stretch my tendons. I didn’t know what ballet was! He hardly did. Beth: Okay! Yngve: It was the Norwegian Opera Ballet School, the first year it opened. I was ten years old. There were nearly three hundred and fifty girls, and four boys. I fell in love with one of the girls who was half Indonesian half Norwegian. She went on to become a prima-ballerina. We still talk on the phone now, fifty years later. Beth: What an incentive! Yngve: After one year it was the world championship of winter sports in Norway, so they had an opening session in Norwegian National Theatre in Oslo with what was called a “Ski Ballet” and I was one of four kids chosen to dance in it. I had hardly ever been in a theatre in my life but suddenly I found myself on stage with a lot of famous actors, singers and dancers, and I thought “This is my life! This is what I want!” Beth: And you had a memorable moment with Rudolf Nureyev at a young age didn’t you? Yngve: Four years later in the National Ballet, I was standing there, in the third act of Swan Lake when Nureyev entered stage with a splits jump over my head! I couldn’t believe it was possible! We had been

www.eastaalgarvemag.com

rehearsing together but he hadn’t done that! He was like a god, but when we were working together he was so friendly and down to earth. A really good guy. I was was very impressed with him as a dancer; I still think he was the best dancer ever. He had the reputation of being arrogant, but to us, no…he treated us as equals. He was a very modest person. Beth: Even when you were fifteen? That’s lovely. Yngve: I was on contract to the company from then on, but I was uncomfortable with traditional ballet. I was a rebel. I didn’t want to be prancing around in white stockings. Then a choreographer arrived who gave me the opportunity to produce my own ballet. I based it on a song by Eric Clapton, “Let it Grow”, but I used other music. It was very successful. Beth: At sixteen! Yngve: Yes. And there were other successful pieces after that. Beth: I heard that you were overwhelmed by fans in Italy, like the Beatles used to be. Yngve: (Laugh) Yes, we were a Swedish Company in the late 70’s, which was very popular, and sometimes we used to have police escort to get out of the theatre. Beth: Ballet is sometimes compared to gymnastics. What do you think? Yngve: Yes, physically, but when you are a dancer it’s not a competition. When you are performing you are expressing something. You are communicating with the public. That’s a big difference. Beth: Margot Fonteyn said that the world of dance is a charmed place. Did you find that?

Beth Jackson shares a few stories with retired ballet dancer Yngve Horn

Yngve: Yes. It is really hard work physical and psychological, but at the same time when you get there it’s almost that you come to another space of life. Beth: She also said that ballet is not a profession, it is a way of life. Did that cost you in your family life? Yngve: I was married once for a very short time. I have lived with 8 women! Beth: You’re not gay then! Yngve: No, but I once made a gay pas de deux which is the only ballet piece that has ever been debated in the Norwegian parliament. That still amuses me. Beth: Do you miss the ballet? Yngve: When I first stopped I was dreaming about it. Not every night, but a lot. I am okay now. Beth: And now, how do you see yourself Yngve? Yngve: I am a rebel. I am an enthusiastic/ melancholic teenager clown in a tired old wrapping. That’s what I am.

sabel Pedras Ribeiro is a native of Valenca, a city of 15,000 inhabitants on the northern border of Portugal and Spain. At the age of only 4 years old, a family friend noted Isabel's love of the outdoors and in particular gardening, stating that she would one day become a farmer. Isabel was educated at local schools and at UTAD – Universidade de Trás-osMontes e Alto Douro – in Vila Real where she graduated in 2000 in Agricultural

16

Engineering. Between 2000 and 2015 she worked in emerging areas of animal husbandry and agricultural technology, including specializing in disease monitoring and pest control. This work had particular reference to transitions from mainstream to organic horticulture, where the ability to protect plants without conventional pesticides is critical. Other areas of involvement included implementation of Global G.A.P., the

worldwide standard for Good Agricultural Practices; supervision of tomato production; the introduction of auxiliary insects for innovative biological pest control. In 2016 she took over the operation of Maria Flaminga Organic Farm, a seven-hectare tract in a city-centre location in Tavira, the site of a former agricultural research station, where she supervises the growing, marketing, and distribution of a wide range of organic fruits, vegetables and herbs.

n average a person moves house 8 times during their life time mainly due to changes in lifestyle. Some want to be closer to amenities and/or family and friends, while young families may have outgrown their home and need a larger property as their family grows in size. When the children have grown up and left, a family home that was perfect before can become a burden due to high running cost, maintenance and condominium fees. As one is getting older the work in the garden especially can become too much. Downsizing or rightsizing is the next step and when living on a countryside location this often goes hand in hand with relocating to a town or city where all amenities are nearby. Releasing equity by buying a smaller property and/or moving to a cheaper location could sometimes be beneficial too. Whatever the reason for moving home might be, it remains a stressful event for many people. This is particularly true when you are downsizing. Often people prefer a more or less similar home with spacious living room and kitchen but fewer bedrooms/bathrooms and a smaller, low maintenance garden and ideally in a central location where one does not need a car all of the time. Moving from a tranquil countryside location with lovely garden and swimming pool to an apartment in a high density residential area in town center with busy traffic is not everyone’s cup of tea. Finding the right place is a balancing act not to be taken lightly. There are many coastal towns in the Algarve to choose from depending on your requirements. The picturesque fisherman village of Cabanas de Tavira offers slow living, only low-rise buildings, a very nice boulevard along the waterfront of the Ria Formosa Natural Reserve Park with many small cafes, great fish restaurants and a short boat trip to beautiful sandy beaches might just be what you have been looking for. New developments are mostly a 10 to 20 minutes walk from the waterfront, so when a front-line opportunity comes along to buy newly build apartments and penthouse

The recently-opened salt mines in Loulé are gathering a growing audience curious to see what is being labelled as a spectacular experience. Brian Redmond did his homework first, then donned a hard hat, and went down to see what was creating such a stir. He was impressed

B

SALT OF THE EARTH

ack In 1893 an Austrian geologist, Eduard Suess proposed the theory that an ancient and ultimately extinct inland sea had once existed between Laurasia (essentially North America, Europe and Asia) and the continents which formed Gondwana (South America, Africa, India and Australasia) some 350 million years ago. He named it the Thetys Sea. In the early 20th century, scientists regarded the sea as a large shallow trough running along and through two continents. In the 1960s the new theories of plate tectonics provided an explanation for the disappearance of the sea, stating that: “an oceanic crust can sub-duct under

30

continental crust”. These crusts and plates are still active today and are what cause up to 15 or more seismic occurances in this part of the world every year. The Thetys Sea did disappear but the salt in it remained, became compacted and turned into rock formations or ’salt domes’ as they are known, that intruded vertically into surrounding rock and earth. One of these domes is present, 230 metres below ground under the Algarve, beneath the town of Loulé. It was discovered in the 1950s, when wells were drilled into the aquifers in the area of Campina de Cima in search of a good water supply that would sustain the needs of a

plan to raise herds of cattle in the area. The water was found to be highly saline and it was concluded that the salt was coming from large rock salt deposits deep underground. In 1963, the company CLONA Mineira de Sais Alcalinos, S.A was formed to begin commercial exploration. In 1964 they hired specialist miners from the about-tobe defunct Minas de São Domingo in the Alentejo to begin digging two access shafts 800m apart which, in 1966, were joined at a depth of minus 230m that would allow efficient ventilation for the explorations of the mine. Mining began in earnest immediately using the proven-safe ‘chamber and pillar’

Places

method. This system ensures that a mine is stable and secure by leaving huge walls of rock salt to support the roof. A VAST STRETCH After more than 50 years of exploration and extraction, the corridors or avenues of the mine stretch out over 45km and the mine itself covers an area of 1,200 hectares. To visualise its reach from landmarks on the surface, it stretches from the Cilindro roundabout on the road to São Brás de Alportel down to the roundabout that leads to Almancil and to Faro; essentially, it is below MatDiver, the Centro Hípico de Loulé, Continente supermarket and the lands around, and also to the west – to the EDP

www.eastalgarvemag.com

Distribution Centre, Restaurant Oliveira and the Padaria Campina. The western limit does not extend under the old town itself but stops at the entrance to the mine behind the EDP lot. Obviously, at 230m or 755ft underground, the activities of the mine can never pose a threat to activities on the surface. In the early days of exploration, the mine employed 200 people. The extraction process was labour-intensive using the ‘cut and blast’ technique which involves cutting a line near the base of a mine face and drilling holes at strategic points, then inserting an explosive cartridge of ANFO explosive – a mixture of fertiliser (ammonium

nitrate) and diesel. An electrical detonator is inserted and the base of the wall is blown away. When the rubble is cleared the same process is used on the higher section of wall. The resulting debris was not uniform in size and so men had to break it down by hand with hammers to make it into manageable pieces. Nowadays the method is called ‘continuous mining’ and it produces smaller pieces of rock using a machine similar to those that are used in drilling tunnels. It bores into the rock salt extracting lumps that are then crushed, filtered and graded into marketable sizes from 1mm up to 8mm. These rotary cutting machines, the belt conveyors, dump trucks, transport machines

31

and all the other service machinery, by virtue of their sizes, would be dismantled at ground level before being lowered into the mine and then reassembled piece by piece. At Mina de Sal-Gema de Loulé, there is a fully-working workshop making repairs down in one of the mined galleries. Other mined galleries are used as storage points for the finished graded material. This is an ideal solution because of the space that is needed and also because the product is being stored in a low humidity environment at an ideal and constant temperature of 23ºC. BREATHING SPACE The mines environmental conditions also have therapeutic values in the treatment of

32

patients with respiratory conditions such as asthma. One such patient was the daughter of a professor from the University of Fine Arts in Porto who, as a gesture of thanks for her treatment, carved an intricate sculpture into the rock face. There have been other artistic installations at the mines including a film festival in 2007 based on the themes of claustrophobia and terror. The audiences were invited to watch movies such as Phonebooth, The Panic Room and The Night of the Living Dead. The screenings then were limited to 40 guests, unlike the 400 spectators who descended to listen to the jazz pianist Mário Laginha who performed there in 2016 as part of the Loulé Jazz Festival. He lauded

the venue as having exceptional and perfect natural acoustics. The audience who attended the jazz gig, all 400 of them, were transported down and up in the personnel access lift that carries six people per load with a journey time of two and a half minutes; it took five hours of that day. The current owners of the mine, Tech Salt S.A, supplies the mined salt to different markets and applications. The product is used principally in animal feed, and de-icing of roads servicing the markets in Portugal and Spain; in addition, it serves as a harmless weed suppressor in urban settings such as footpaths and open spaces. The company has also been engaged in opening

the mine site as a tourist attraction. A SIGHT LIKE YOU’VE NEVER SEEN Visitors to the mine are equipped with a helmet and miner’s lamp plus a highviz vest before taking the elevator down underground. The smooth journey takes you past initial layers of concrete and then brick until you reach the rock salt layer which is brown in colour. Once you arrive at minus 230 metres, a professional guide – in our case Adriana – tells an informed and fascinating story about this breathtaking undergroundscape. The place is nothing short of spectacular! Long broad avenues up to 1.2kms long between the pillars and chambers are laid out like a city grid.

www.eastalgarvemag.com

The sounds of machinery come out of the darkness and now and again a transport truck zooms past . The avenues are broad, up to 12m wide. Miners headlamps dart around in the distant darkness. The visitors area is 1.3kms in length and is illuminated by overhead lighting at intervals along the way. One spectacular gallery contains hundreds of saline stalactites and is beautifully lit as is the concert chamber in warm glows that pick out the beauty of the rocks on the floor the walls and the ceiling. All salt. At 30m or 100ft below sea level, these live mines of Mina De Sal Gema are a truly unique experience, right under our feet in the Algarve, below Loulé.

Mina de Sal-Gema de Loulé Rua dos Combatentes da Grande Guerra nº 80, Loulé T: 914 534 750 E: mina.sal.gema.loule@mail.com The two-hour walking tour covers 1.3km, with explanations in English, French and Portuguese. he Mediterranean climate is characterized by wet, mild winters and long, warm, and dry summers. Most of the yearly rainfall occurs during the winter, and there can be a couple of dry months, except for summer storms. Our expert tips will help you save time and grow a beautiful garden without a loss of plants and money.

DO

Choose the right plants Cacti and succulents are very tolerant to the heat and drought. Opuntia and houseleeks (or hens and chicks) are the most common plants in local households. Agaves are great in the direct sun and reach several meters in height, while aloe grows comfortably in the summer and needs to be moved indoors for the winter months. Traditional herbs such as rosemary, basil, oregano, thyme, and lavender grow well in the rocky Montenegrin soil and the sun. Lownutrient soil causes these plants to produce better flavor, and local people believe they are natural mosquito repellents. Plant native shrubs Look around your area: native Mediterranean plants have developed mechanisms in response to prolonged and dry summers. Most plants in these areas usually have deep roots to take up water from the deeper ground layers, while small gray-green leaves limit the plant’s transpiration and reflect the sun. Olive, pomegranate and fig trees, as well as beautiful Bougainvillea and blossoming oleander, will add full green color to your garden. Add fruit trees Citrus gardens are very characteristic of Mediterranean households. Their blossom smell is divine, and the fruits are harvested in winter. Kumquat (Citrus japonica) is my favorite among them, and you can eat its lovely fruits straight from the tree. They don't require much space and with proper care, fructifies abundantly.

for your Garden www.eastalgarvemag.com

As we are lucky enough to enjoy our gardens and outside spaces all year round, here are a few important things to remember about gardening in the Algarve

Watering and mulching Regular watering is essential in the hot climate. The best solution is to install drip irrigation that will deliver the water automatically to your plants. If watering by hand, remember to do it regularly, in the cooler hours (early morning preferably) and with enough to reach the lower ground layers. Adding mulch such as gravel or wood chips will prevent the soil from losing water and heating - and it’s also a nice touch. Collect rainwater Your southern garden needs a lot of water, so it's best to collect it while it's raining and if possible, redirect it to your flowerbeds. Also, watering with low-temperature water is not recommended in hot summer days.

Gardens

DON'T

Grass Lawns Grass lawns have higher water and maintenance needs in the hot Mediterranean sun as well as a specific approach to the choice of species. But if you need some lawn space in the backyard for your kids, seeding some kind of ground cover or creeping plants can be your solution. Terracotta Pots They look beautiful and authentic but clay is a porous material which makes the soil in it dry out twice as fast, and you’ll need to water

your plants more frequently. If you like them that much, put your pots in the shadowed area and plant drought-resistant plants in them. Planting in spring The best time to grow many plants is in the winter because of the cooler temperatures and rainy season. Begin planting in September and plan on harvesting by spring. Consider March as the latest time for planting before the dry and hot season. Common continental plants Many flowers that are known in the northern parts of the world, such as rhododendrons

and azaleas, struggle in this dry Mediterranean climate. These flowers grow slowly and require lots of shade and water. Select climate resistant climbing flowers such as the beautiful wisteria or bougainvillea, jasmine or rose vines. Metal furniture Though it looks very romantic in a typical patio scene, trust me - it is the wrong choice. Metal tends to heat very quickly and get ice-cold just as fast. For your comfort, select outdoor furniture made of durable wood such as teak or rattan accompanied by many pillows with washable covers.

Readers Q&A

I have been a resident here since 2019 and this is the first time I will need to submit the IRS tax declaration. Can you please let me what information is needed from me, and the deadlines to send this? The IRS (Personal Income Tax) declaration, needs to be submitted between the first of April and the end of June and can only be done online. As a resident, you need to report the worldwide income and any tax paid in the country of source. You are also obliged to declare your foreign bank accounts. Prior to the submission of your tax declaration, please be aware that there are some tasks that you need to complete, so please put the two key following dates in your diary: You have until the 15 February to confirm or submit alterations to your household composition; you have until the 25 February to query, report and verify invoices – this is an important task in case you have expenses that are deductible on your IRS. After the submission of the IRS, in case this results in a tax refund, the payment should be received by the end of July. If, however, there is a tax bill to be paid and not a tax refund, the payment is due by the end of August.

Q

I am a British citizen with a Portuguese NIF (tax number) and I currently live in the UK. I own a property in Vilamoura, which I rent out to tourists. After Brexit what are the implications and what action should I take towards the Portuguese Tax Authorities? After Brexit you will have to designate a fiscal representative within 15 days. You will also need to submit a declaration of change of activity, just with the purpose of appointing the fiscal representative for VAT and IRS.

This VAT representative also needs to be liable for VAT and tax resident in Portugal.

Q

I have two local lodging units in Tavira, and I currently pay 8.75% tax on my gross income (as a non-resident). Is this tax likely to be maintained in 2020? Will there be any changes? The State Budget for 2020 is not yet approved, but there is no indication of tax changes to most of the local lodging units, which means that you will be paying the same amount of tax as previously. However, there is a possibility of increasing the tax for Local Lodging Properties that are located in certain areas, which were denominated by the local Council as ‘containment zones’, though currently only a few neighborhoods in Lisbon were classed this way. If this is approved, it means that local lodging properties located in these zones, will pay 12.50% tax on their 2020 gross income (payable in August 2021).

Q

I am a Dutch pensioner and my wife has no income. We are both resident in Portugal and in 2020 we plan to rent out our property with AirBnB. Can you please advise the best way to structure this? The house is in both our names and is not our main residency; we bought it as in investment. If you are renting a property for short term lets, you need to know that you must have a Local Lodging (AL) License, in order to advertise it for rentals in the main portals. In order to get this license, one of the requirements is to be registered as a sole trader in the tax office. You have three options, either you register and declare this income in your own name; your wife does it on your behalf, or you both do it and share the income of the property between you.

46

If both of you do it, it will allow you to have a 20,000€ VAT threshold; as the VAT threshold is 10,000€ per person, you would double this. In the event that you think that you will not realise rent in excess of 10.000€ per year, then I would recommend that the activity is registered under your wife’s name. The main advantages would be the following: If you submit separate tax declarations, as your wife has no other income, her tax rate would be lower. Also, bearing in mind that she does not receive any salary or pension, she will get a tax break on the first two years, in her local lodging activity: 50% on the first year and 25% on the second year.

Salaries and other income arising from governmental employment shall be taxed only in the country of origin. This means that as a Non-Habitual Resident, you will have to declare this income in Portugal, but you will not be liable for any tax; the tax should only be paid in Sweden. New Year New Savings!

ew year new you! For the majority of people saving more is one of their new year resolutions. But a lot of people forget about saving for retirement and the likelihood is the little savings you put away and state pension (such as Social Security) will not provide enough income to live in the manner in which you've become accustomed for up to thirty years. But don't feel too bad, many of us have been sold an unrealistic vision of retirement. The idea, for obvious reasons, has taken hold that after forty years of work we are entitled to spend a few decades of our life in leisure. And why not; who wouldn't want to spend their golden years in a warm climate, playing golf, surrounded by peers who also have ample free time? It's like being on spring break until you die. But this is not a realistic financial goal for most people. No matter how keen a saver you may be, raising children and maintaining even a modest lifestyle often does not leave enough money to spend one third of your life on holiday. There is also the fact that many people do not even pay attention to their pension let alone save enough. According to AVIVA, nearly two-thirds of people over the age of 45 haven’t reviewed the performance of their pension meaning in the UK alone around 10 million retirements saving schemes are at risk of underperforming. If people simply aren’t saving enough, they can forget the endless vacation- they will probably face a large cut in their standard of living after they retire. From a historical perspective the entire retirement concept is relatively new. For most of civilisation the average person worked until they

became too sick or feeble, or died. According to Dora Costa's book ‘The Evolution of Retirement’, in 1880's America more than three-quarters of men over 64 and half of 85-year olds still worked. When people did retire they had little wealth and often were dependent on relatives. The growth of retirement was driven by changes in the labour force (a move away from family farms and toward production and services), new social norms (which made retirement the expectation and created a critical mass of retirees), and financial incentives (income from state pensions and private pensions from employers). The introduction of state pensions was significant because it provided retirement income for everyone (including those too poor to save). This allowed elderly people to cease work and not be dependent on their families. To this day, many people rely on state benefits as their primary source of retirement income. In late 19th-century Germany, Otto von Bismarck first introduced the concept of receipt of a state income after a pre-specified age. But keep in mind—he set the retirement age to 70, well beyond the average life expectancy then. Twenty-seven years later that age was lowered to 65. It's extraordinary that the 65 retirement age seems to have stuck, or even been lowered, while life-expectancy has steadily increased. This means each generation gets successively longer retirement. Retirement, like other post-industrial inventions like electricity or television, has become a luxury we've come to expect and rely upon. Like consumption of other goods, as technology advances and we become wealthier, we expect more and better retirement. This is not entirely unreasonable.

Western countries have more wealth than before and better technology to save, invest, and redistribute income. There is no need to go back to the work-until-you-die model. But this does not mean current retirement expectations are reasonable either, especially when so many depend on the government to provide their retirement income. Demographic pressures on state pensions further complicate retirement planning. Individuals are more responsible than ever for saving and investing for their own retirement. Most people have individual accounts instead of defined-benefit pensions. Saving enough and investing to provide for a long retirement is a complex financial decision with many uncertain variables, like life expectancy and asset returns. State pensions are supposed to provide an income floor, keep you out of poverty, and provide some certainty. But there exists a great deal of uncertainty about how state pensions will continue to be financed. At least if you invest your personal pension it can be adjusted according to your portfolio and risk tolerance. deVere Portugal specialises in financial planning services including investment strategies, long term financial saving schemes, as well as taxefficient pension plans. We formulate each financial plan according to our customers’ experience, portfolio and personal aims and goals. Olhanense drop their first home points of the season against Amora

FORMER LEEDS UNITED PLAYER TAKES CHARGE AT OLHANENSE

B

All the latest sports news from Chris Wright.

runo Ribeiro, who played for Leeds United, Sheffield United and managed Port Vale, is the new manager at Olhanense. The 44 year-old former Portugal U20 international, who has also managed SC Farense, has most recently been coach in Angola with Interclube. The change at the top was the result of Primeira Liga SC Braga sacking coach Sá Pinto and then promoting reserve team boss Rúben Amorim to replace him. The Os Arsenalistas moved quickly to fill the vacant position within the ’B’ team setup and Olhanense’s young progressive manager Vasco Faísca was the man they turned to. Rumour is that Braga will also be signing Olhanense’s wing-back 19 year-old Leonardo Lelo who made his debut for the Portugal U20 international team a few months ago. SC Olhanense, chasing the dream of a return to the Segunda Liga, continued their

50

unbeaten run dating back to mid-September in the Campeonato Portugal Division D. They enter the New Year in pole position after a December that saw two impressive away victories at high flying Alverca and Pinhalnovense. The last game before the festive break was a wonderful present for the fans who had seen the team drop points in their previous two games against mid-table Amora and Loures. Pinhalnovense, who were unbeaten at home, found themselves three goals down after just nineteen minutes as João Vasco (8'), Sapara (16') and Caleb (19') ran amok. The league’s top scorer Hassan added Olhanense’s fourth in the twenty-ninth minute before the home side pulled a goal back from the penalty spot just before the break. But there was no stopping Olhanense who went up the other end and Rafael Tavares made it 5-1 deep into first-half stoppage time. The second period was an anti-climax

although the home side did miss a penalty and the visitors had substitute Guilherme sent-off near the end. Thirty-six points from a maximum possible of forty-five is promotion form and whoever takes over will need to keep the momentum going. Rumours abound that top scorers Hassan, Sapara and João Vasco are on the radar of several senior clubs throughout Europe. The Portuguese-Guinean winger Muhamed Varela Djamanca, who has been training with Olhanense since October, has finally put pen-to-paper and is awaiting international clearance. The 21 year-old has previously had experience in Italy following spells at Belenenses, Real SC, Gil Vicente, Sporting and D.Aves. January HOME fixtures: Sunday 5th Oriental (Lisbon); Sunday 26th to Aljustrelense. Kick-off 3.00pm at the José Arcanjo Stadium, Olhão (behind McDonalds on the EN125).

WALKING FOOTBALL ENJOYS FESTIVE CHEER

layers, officials and friends of East Algarve Walking Football celebrated their sixth annual Christmas Dinner at the Xicken Piri Piri Restaurant near Tavira. Well over a hundred guests sat down to a fine feast of festive fayre. Commemorative bottles of wine were presented to Roy McCrudden, Jeff Denman, Paul Shawe and Andy Smith for their efforts throughout the year and a special presentation was made to Gordon Linford for his services to the club on ‘hanging up his

EAWF players and their silverware at the Christmas Dinner whistle’ after years of refereeing. Voting for the prestigious Zimmer Awards - walking football‘s equivalent of the Oscars - resulted in awards being presented to Mark Wilson (EAWF 50+ Player of the Year); Charlie Cousin (EAWF 60+ Player of the Year); Stuart Meakin (Personality of the Year) whilst the Imodium Award (the player who has ‘run/talked’ the most during the year) was awarded for the second year running to George Allen. The President’s Award honoured

the Fox Family - Jake, Connor, Tanya & Mark for their special support. Crackers were pulled and paper hats donned as the entertainment got underway. Stuart Meakin’s take off of Bad Manners front man Buster Bloodvessel and his rendition of ‘Lip Up Fatty’ had the audience in stitches before George Allen gave a hilarious and irreverent monologue on the origins and development of walking football in the Algarve. During the evening 230euros was raised, making a grand total of €700, to support young people with diabetes in the area. The last year of the decade closed on an enthralling twelve months for East Algarve Walking Football which has seen the first ever walking football tournament played on the lawns of a British Embassy Residence in Lisbon. Elsewhere the magic of walking football has spread farand-wide. Jason Manford, who joined in a session of walking football in Tavira last summer, has gone on to play the lead in Curtains, a musical whodunit which toured the UK to critical acclaim before moving to the Wyndham's Theatre in London's West End mid-December. Likewise Jonjo Shelvey, Newcastle United and England international, played walking football in Olhão and has subsequently gone on to re-establish himself as a goal-scoring attacking midfielder with five goals in twelve appearances for the Magpies. The mantra of fun, fitness and friendship continues its ‘feel good’ factor as more recruits join. www.walkingfootballalgarve.com

ormer Benfica and Sporting manager Jorge Jesus was appointed manager of Brazilian club Flamengo last June and despite negative reactions by fans and sports commentators he went on to win the Copa Libertadores (the south American equivalent of the Champions League), defeating Argentina's River Plate 2–1 with a late comeback in the final in Lima, Peru. In November he became the first foreign manager to win an international trophy with a Brazilian team. Jorge Jesus, who forty-five years ago played for Olhanense and ten years later for Farense, then took Flamengo to the final of the FIFA World Club Championship where they lost 1-0 to Liverpool in extra-time.

Without a Padel

Looking for a new way to keep fir in 2020? Stuart Anderson tells us all we need to know about Padel Tennis

M

any of us who have lived in or visited southern Spain will be very familiar with Padel Tennis – in fact in the Southern Costas it would be the exception rather than the rule that new developments would be built without at least one or two Padel courts – often going hand in hand with a swimming pool. Thankfully you see more and more courts popping up across the Algarve including at least 3 or 4 around Tavira. For some visitors to the area it’s still a bit of a mystery yet Padel is probably one the most fantastic, fast-paced games available on the Algarve and claims to be the fastest growing sport in Europe over the past 10 years. In short, Padel has exactly the same scoring rules as normal tennis, played with pretty much the same ball over a standard tennis net. The court is a bit smaller and … most significantly, the perimeter is enclosed with concrete and glass walls. The racquet/bat is shorter in length and is solid rather than stringed, and its mostly played as

52

doubles at club level. By virtue of the enclosed sides and rear, rallies are much longer because players can use the border and back walls to maintain play. In the normal run of the game, the only main difference from the traditional tennis format is that the service is hit from waist height rather than being over-arm. Padel’s popularity in Spain comes largely from its routes - being invented in Mexico in the late 60’s and enjoying great popularity throughout Latin America originally – especially in Mexico and Argentina before making its move into Spain and Andorra in the 80’s. Taken from the 2019 World Padel rankings, 9 out of the top ten women’s players were from Spain – with just one solitary non-Spanish player being Ana Nogueira … from Portugal! The Tennis Club in Cabanas has Padel Courts, as does the the Ozadi Hotel, Tavira Tennis, and the Tennis and Padel club in Sao Bras. Happy Padeling!!
