INDIAN FARMER

Welcome... ...to your January issue and indeed to 2021. This month we give you an alternative view of Vila Real de Santo Antรณnio along with a brief look into its history. We visit Tchin-Cheese, a cheese and wine shop recently opened in the center of Tavira offering a huge selection of cheeses and organic wines. Maureen Lobeu has been busy this month; firstly meeting Nino, the 'go to guy' in the East Algarve, and secondly visiting the Pastelaria with a difference, Pastelaria Jardim. We also introduce a brand new column for a bit of fun: Bad advice, Ask the Expat. I'd love to hear your thoughts about it (remember it's for fun). All this plus our regular features including local news, property, gardening, health and finance. As always, your comments or suggestions are welcome, please email info@eastalgarvemag.com

2021... The Algarve, one of Europe’s finest golf holiday destinations, will put an extra spring in the step of the European Tour schedule as the Portugal Masters makes a seasonal switch for the 2021 Race to Dubai. Traditionally hosted in the autumn in recent years, the annual 72-hole battle over the challenging Dom Pedro Victoria Golf Course will now take place from April 28-May 2, 2021 as part of a revamped schedule of tournaments. Alongside the recent positive news on vaccines, the announcement represents some extra encouragement for golfers to plan their own spring return to the Algarve’s cherished fairways. The spring

A22 tolls to be cut by 50%

T

he PSD’s proposal to reduce tolls by 50 percent, in ex-SCUT roads, including the Via do Infante (A22), has been approved by parliament, with votes in favour of all parties, except the Socialist Party and Liberal Initiative. According to Sul Informação newspaper, the reduction of tolls ‘by 50 percent for combustion vehicles and 75 percent for electric vehicles’ will come into ‘effect from 1 July 2021’. “In regions where there are no alternatives, where accessibility costs are very high and where public transport isn’t a good option, it is vital to take essential steps to minimise context costs. That is what the Parliament has done with this decision”, said Cristóvão Norte, PSD deputy.

season is traditionally hugely popular with visiting golfers, thanks to the destination’s warm temperatures and manicured courses. The Portugal Masters is one of the big-hitting events on the Tour and was praised for its superb organisation in 2020, where a successful Covid testing programme allowed the event to run smoothly and also saw the European Tour host its pilot pro-am event, supported by the Algarve Biomedical Centre. The Algarve has implemented extensive Covid measures in recent times for guests to feel safe as possible on the stunning southern Portugal coastline and to maintain their confidence in the destination. A spokesperson for Algarve Tourism

said: “It is always an honour to host one of the European Tour’s most popular events and everyone took great pride in the way the tournament was staged in September with so many new safety measures in place. “This is extra recognition of the trust placed in us to deliver another safe and successful tournament for many of the world’s top golfers and we look forward to welcoming them all once again to the Algarve in April.” Additional incentive to visit the Algarve this spring is being provided by the tourist board’s “Golf Clubs are on Us” promotion, which covers the costs of golfers taking their clubs on flights for travel up to the end of May. Bookings, however, must be confirmed by 31 January to avail of the offer.

Positive results in climate change

P

ortugal has climbed eight positions, compared to 2019, in the Climate Change Performance Index and was the third country with the highest increase in climate measures, after Sweden and New Zealand. The Climate Change Performance Index 2021 (CCPI) is a comparative analysis of climate protection in 57 countries (plus the EU), which represent 90 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions, and is the responsibility of two international organisations; Germanwatch and NewClimate Institute. The list released doesn’t yet reflect the year of 2020 and the consequences of the pandemic, however, the two organisations said that no country on the list is on a path compatible with the objectives of the Paris Agreement, signed by almost every country in the World in December 2015. However, they point out that greenhouse gas emissions are decreasing in more than half of the countries analysed. The EU receives a high rating of climate protection and within this there are seven countries that also stand out positively, one of them is Portugal. In the analysis of the Portuguese classification, the environmental association Zero, which is part of the International Climate Action Network (which cooperates in the publication of the Index), highlights the important rise of Portugal, but warns that the emission of greenhouse gases per capita are still increasing, without a large increase in the use of renewable energy. The Index, published annually since 2005, measures greenhouse gas emissions, renewable energy, energy use and climate policy, and intends to create political and social pressure on countries that don’t reach the objectives.

T

chin-Cheese, has the ultimate selection of cheese and organic wines, located in the heart of Tavira. Owners Guillaume and Gaëlle, from Brittany, opened their new venture on the 18th of September, 2020. The couple has a background in video and filmmaking, specialising in music videos, specifically Electro music. They ran a programme called 'Plug-in' which aired on local TV in western France. Having had a holiday home on Armona Island since 2000, Portugal had always been a place for a restful retreat, within easy reach of home.

www.eastalgarvemag.com

In search of new challenges, in 2014 Gaëlle went back to school to learn about organic plants, teas, and medicinal herbs. Guillaume went to agricultural school, and earned a master's degree in how to sell wine; a very involved process that included learning everything about growing wine. Part of this included biological and organic wine, very much in-line with the path Gaëlle had taken. Their new-found knowledge inspired a change of life that was much more organic and involved a different circle of friends and acquaintances, along with a new direction of life. Their intention was to sell the house on the island and buy a Quinta in the countryside

to grow organic products. In the interim period Guillaume began to buy and sell Portuguese organic wine to bars and restaurants which he continues to do; (see Theorganicwinecollection on Facebook and Instagram). The outbreak of COVID-19 hugely affected business which gave Guillaume and Gaëlle three months to consider what to do with their future here in Portugal. During this time the ideal space and location became available in the center of Tavira, the perfect place to sell organic wine. Guillaume became familiar with Tavira selling wine at the annual Mediterranean diet fair

which was very successful. He also noticed that there were no cheese shops in Tavira. The perfect pairing was made... Tchin-Cheese! The shop sells mainly fine French cheeses, including some of their favourites such as Comté, Camembert and Roquefort, all handcrafted, organic, and made with raw milk, along with a meticulous selection of local products, including carefully selected Portuguese honeys and olive oils, spices, organic teas, chocolate, coffee, and more. During our interview, a very important delivery arrived... fresh black truffles!

www.eastalgarvemag.com

Also available are Spanish manchegos, mozzarellas, burattas, and many other seasonal products. As for the shop’s wine selection, Guillaume and Gaëlle choose to work with 15 small and independent Portuguese winemakers. The store’s organic ethos is taken very seriously as the couple is “committed to the protection of the environment and the welfare of domestic and wild animals”. “We have always tried to eat and drink safe and organic products when possible,” they say. Visitors can also choose to enjoy a glass of

wine, cheese tapas, or even a cheeseboard while sitting at the shady terrace. In the future, Tchin-Cheese will be holding wine tasting and presentation evenings, and art exhibitions. Currently, at the store you can see some of Guillaume's sister's stunning fine artwork; incredibly detailed using black ink and gold leaf. Look out for a feature in a future issue. You can find Tchin-Cheese at number 24 on Tavira’s Rua da Liberdade. Tel; (+351) 915 474 033 email; tchincheese@gmail.com Facebook; 'Tchin-Cheese'

Vila Real de

From the first stone laid to the inauguration in just over 18 months, here's a little about the incredible town of Vila Real de Santo António

V

ila Real de Santo António extends for 62,45 Km² and is divided into three parishes: Vila Real de Santo António, Monte Gordo, and Vila Nova de Cacela, with circa 20,000 inhabitants. The history of Vila Real de Santo António has a relatively recent origin. The now town (elevated to this status in 1988), was ordered to be built by a Royal Charter signed on 30 December, 1773. Its construction was completed in a little more than two years,

12

the first stone laid on 17 March, 1774 and inaugurated on 13 May, 1776. The city plan was marked in the place then called Barranco on March 2, 1774. The buildings were pre-fabricated and standardised to replicate downtown Lisbon. The orientation was longitudinal to the Guadiana River, facing Ayamonte in Spain, also located at the mouth of the Guadiana river, on its left bank. From the 19th century Vila Real de Santo António attracted workers from neighbouring towns and villages due to the fishing industry

www.eastalgarvemag.com

and the increasing number of canning factories (the first one appeared in 1879), which were followed by the industries of bobbin lace and palm made objects. This increase in economy was also helped by the S. Domingos Copper Mines, which exported their copper pyrites shipped along the Guadiana to the port of Vila Real de Santo Antรณnio. This port quickly became the most important one in the Algarve province, with foreign ships collecting copper and tuna. Tuna was mainly responsible for the

www.eastalgarvemag.com

economic prosperity of the municipality in the 20th century. Vila Real de Santo Antรณnio was then called "Bolsa do Atum", and this fish was responsible for changing the way of life of the local population, especially in gastronomy. Tuna was also the cause of the biggest demographic increase in the town. People came to look for jobs not only in fishing and canning, but also in the various factories and shops that complemented these activities.

Arraial Ferreira Neto (Hotel Vila GalĂŠ, Albacora)

Once a self contained village and now a Hotel, Vila GalĂŠ Albacora houses a small, yet fascinating museum dedicated to the history of the Tuna Fishing industry in the Algarve

ack in 1941 the owner of a Tuna fishing company, Jose Silva Ferreira Neto, built what is now the Hotel Vila GalĂŠ, Albacora. Originally the complex was designed to be what is known in Portugal as an 'Arraial'. A small village accomodating 4-500 people, consisting of the fishermen and their families. The Arraial included small houses, a church, school, a co-operative where people would trade their goods within the community, and working areas. The space was divided into two zones, work; now the area around the pool, and living; now largely hotel accomodation. Areas were separated by a wall (now removed) and also defined by colour; the

16

'housing' area being yellow/ochre, and 'work' areas white. These colours are still used today, although the complex has no division. The accomodation was made up of eleven 'streets' each named after a predominant figure within the community. The 'commander' of the Arraial lived in the main house, along with the accountant, teacher, and village hairdresser. The house is located centrally and has a viewing tower (big brother was watching back then too). A pretty little church was added later in 1949. The fishing season started in May, when the nets and boats would be blessed with salt water, and an offering of a crown made of flowers would be left on the beach.

Part of the Co-operative area now houses a museum. The most impressive exhibit being a huge model of how the Tuna fishing nets would have been set out at sea offering a fascinating insight as to how the process worked. The huge network of nets would slowly be reduced until the fish were confined to a square surrounded by the fishermen in their boats. This square was referred to as the 'Almadrava'; the killing place. The fish would thrash around violently, and as they were hooked out of the sea it would turn red with blood. At its height in 1881, the fishery caught 43,000 Tuna fish, however, due to a change in the route the fish took to breed, in 1971 this figure plummeted down to one single fish.

Linked-in

Maureen LoBue meets the most 'Linked-in' person in the East Algarve... from organising Fado evenings, to property rentals, Nino will be able to assist, or will know someone who can

I

have a 3 month stay in the East Algarve and want to see the area and find events where I can meet other people. I need a place to stay, but I am not sure which area suits me or fits my budget. So many questions and uncertainties that make me feel overwhelmed. Who do I talk to? Who can I trust? Who knows about local activities and events?” I am stressed about all of this. Then, I find the person who I now consider to be 'Ultra Linked-in'. The one person who can answer all these questions and help my stay go smoothly, a central support person. No longer overwhelmed, I can look forward to my Algarve experience. And if I return to the Algarve after being away, I will have some favorite things to count on and familiarity which is essential. Ultra linked-in, better known as Nino, has created a one of a kind organisation for the East Algarve, a central resource and support for activities, events, apartment rentals, and more recently, sports training camps. All of these can be found in a central place as well, on the website www.montegordo-online.com. Each section has a clear link to details and contact information, whether it be hiking or scooter exploration, local entertainment, or accommodations. Everything can begin here. “How can I be different from the others” Like so many, Nino came to the Algarve knowing no one. Quickly he started making contacts with local businesses and people. Looking at a number of projects he discovered what was most needed, a consistent connection between agencies and their clients. So, in 2007 he became that person, a connector. He created and established his own unique organisation. His strength in doing this comes from a background in The Netherlands where he learned about processes and logistics in the business world. Listening to people here, led to seeing the gap between agencies and clients and he decided to fill it. The question behind it all was “How can I be different from the others?”

www.eastalgarvemag.com

People

the Algarve

“What's missing for people who will stay here on either short holidays or for longer stays?” The answer was the connection between clients and businesses, the transparency and the consistency, a central way to not only get information but feel supported. “When you do it well, they always come back” How does Nino connect with the community and maintain that connection? Initial contact through www.montegordo-online.com, word of mouth, or other businesses. A continued connection is done by keeping in touch with clients even after they leave through email, WhatsApp, or phone. A key to building the trust of clients is transparency and consistency. “We have been creating packages for over 10 years so we know what to offer and we can explain it with ease. The structure and pricing are consistent throughout the year.” Returning clients know they can count on a wonderful time each and every time. One couple's response after an evening event was “It was a very beautiful evening with fantastic musicians and a wonderfully well-groomed dinner.” The keys to keeping that trust are consistency and support. “People never ask for the details, it is a given all events will be organised to the highest of standards and without any "surprises.” Clients return for events and packages because along with the transparency there is the trust that the quality will remain and that communication will be clear. “Clients continue to return during all

these years of operation.” A returning couple who has attended dinner dances described them as “Fantastique!” An important factor in his success is the close support of clients. When an event is planned, such as a dinner dance or Fado night, Nino arranges individual transportation to the event and personally meets everyone at the venue. That kind of support is rare. According to an event attendee I spoke to, “It is fantastically organised. He picked me up in front of my door!” “I always start with the logistics” In 2015 Nino observed another gap and filled it by creating 'Sports Algarve'. With the same focus on supporting clients, Sports Algarve is designed to connect football and athletics groups throughout Europe with training camps and facilities in Portugal. Nino works as the organiser, setting up the logistics. “I always start with the logistics.” When a trainer contacts him to arrange a time frame between October and April, Nino arranges a package with the same transparency as with events and activities. Venues, accommodation, etc are all included the entire experience is catered for. The connection is made during all the arrangements. It is continued by meeting the groups at the airport and being available at any time during the camp intensive. This message from a trainer, “First day training camp of Sports Algarve almost behind. Training on a great field, beach walk, football and a lot of fun”, sums it up well. Two special events lined up for 2021 include the Jeu de Boules Tournament and the International Football Tournament for veteran teams over the age of 35. Sports Algarve details can be accessed from a link on www.montegordoonline.com or from a separate website www.sportsalgarve.com. New people coming to the area can count on Nino to get them connected to the community and get to know it. Long stay and returning people feel they are part of the community through familiar events and activities. Whether you are new to East Algarve or a returning resident, Nino the connector is there to support you.

he past year has been difficult for many people and businesses all over the world due to the pandemic. Lockdowns, closed borders, curfews, and quarantine measures have put many lives upside down. As the Algarve´s economy is highly dependent on tourism it was badly hit. According to Rita Marques, Portugal´s Secretary of State for Tourism, tourism has been set back by 10 years due to Covid-19 and lost 7.7 bn Euro in revenues in 2020. There are always hotels that normally close during the winter months, but not to this extent. At the end of December, only 80 out of the 400 hotels in the Algarve were open and these had very few guests. With so few holidaymakers in the Algarve, it makes financial sense to temporarily close as the fixed costs of running a hotel are relatively high. The local lodging sector is also suffering, albeit to a lesser extent than hotels. Income may be down year on year, but the operational costs are also much lower compared with hotels. Only very few owners of rental properties had rental income equal to or higher than in 2019. The majority registered a fall in income of 30 to 35%. Some sadly did not have any bookings at all in 2020. Mr. Elderico Viegas of the hotel association AHETA expects it will take 4 to 5 years for business to return to levels enjoyed before the pandemic descended. However, we believe that the local lodging sector will recover faster for two reasons: A shift has been noticed in holidaymaker’s preferences for self-catering accommodation owing to the fact that during the pandemic people prefer to avoid the shared facilities that hotels offer. (Who wants/needs a stranger to go into their bedroom to make the beds every day?) Increase in demand for long stays from both retirees and people preferring to work from home. This trend started long before the pandemic, but the latter is gaining traction due to increased acceptance of working from home) Few hotels offer this type of service, but this may change. If you bought a rental property in the 2nd half of 2019 or in 2020, it is highly likely that the rental income was below your expectations. Properties that have been available to rent longer have the benefit of having established marketing channels in addition to the benefit of repeat customers. An additional benefit is being open-minded to accepting long

www.eastalgarvemag.com

Property

stays in combination with short term lettings. Many homeowners do not accept a long stay booking as they wrongly assume that they pay a higher tax rate of 28%. However, and if booked correctly, you can invoice long stay income under the AL regime and benefit from the lower rate of 8.75%. With the rollout of vaccines and ongoing safety precautions, eventually, things will normalize. How long this will take is everybody’s guess. In the meantime, we believe that holidaymakers will continue to have a preference for private accommodation such as apartments, village houses, and villas with a private pool as it offers their families a more protected environment. If you are the owner of a good quality property with or without a swimming pool and would like to have more information about the do’s and don’ts of local lodging, rules and regulation, and taxation please contact us. We are currently listing homes for the upcoming season to add to our portfolio. Best wishes for the New Year and stay safe and healthy.

The importance of voting here in Portugal Exercise your right to have your say!

O

ne of the best things about being an Expat and living in a patch of the world where the weather is much milder than northern Europe and the skies are blue for 300 days of the year, is the “Expat Bubble.” Slipping into that blissful bubble is all too easy, feeling as though the real world has little to no impact on my personal life. The happy bubble feeling is enhanced because the news here is in a language I do not speak, write, or understand. This means that politics is happily off my radar and yet, my entire existence here is dependent on my bubble remaining blissful. If my patch of heaven sees changes, it will no longer be my haven, the place I feel is my home. There might be areas that can be improved, but by and large, I just really want this place, the municipality of Tavira, to remain as I found it. I want to safeguard and protect what and where I fell in love with, and the elements that drew me here in the first place. Ergo, political changes should very much be a concern of mine and dare I suggest, to all expats and foreign residents here in the Algarve. This coming October local elections will be held for the municipality of Tavira, it is important to all of us expats which political party will come into power as change is

www.eastalgarvemag.com

inevitable. I know that as a resident my voice and vote do matter and I will be using them to create an even better bubble. This past year has shown us how important it is to vote, this right has been won with much struggle between the centuries and has never been more important than ever. Democracies and our voices remain and grow to create a better world. Local elections for Tavira will be held in 2021. As a resident you have the right to have your voice heard! Follow future proposals and candidates with this practical guide for registering as a voter, the process only takes a few minutes and is of paramount importance to your future and your time here. I am a foreign citizen and live in Portugal. May I vote in the Portuguese elections? You may vote in the elections for local autarchy bodies, as long as they are registered in the census of the national territory, all Portuguese citizens (and Brazilian citizens with citizen card or ID card) and also citizens from the following countries are eligible to vote: • Member States of the European Union (Germany, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Denmark, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Estonia, Finland, France, Greece, The Netherlands, Hungary, Italy, Leetonia, Lithuania, Luxemburg, Malta, Poland, Check Republic, Romania and Sweden); • Brazil and Cape Verde

• Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Island, Norway, New Zealand, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela (Declaration nr. 4/2013, of 24th of June) The UK has signed a bilateral agreement with Portugal on UK nationals’ right to vote in local elections. The agreement guarantees that if you were living in Portugal before 31 January 2020 you maintain the right to vote and stand in local elections. If you have moved to Portugal after 31 January 2020, you will be able to vote in local elections after 3 years of residency After 5 years of residency you will be able to stand and be elected for local office. How can I Register my Vote? Simply go to the Voting Commission (CR), at the parish council (juntas de freguesia), this corresponds to the address indicated to where you are registered or at the Foreigners and Border Services (SEF). Make sure to bring your ID and a bill (utility, internet etc) with your name and address on it, as proof of address may be required by the parish. Until When? Your registration must be done 90 days before the elections in October 2021 More information: registeryourvotetavira21@gmail.com

The Reality of Living with Covid-Part II The real life and ongoing experience of our dear friends Terje and Denise Dahl. Our thoughts and prayers remain with you both

T

hank you to everyone who took the time to read my article The Reality of Living with Covid in the December edition of East Algarve Magazine. Sadly, as predicted, Terje died on December 8th at 17:40 having never regained consciousness from the induced coma, a necessity when being treated by an invasive ventilator, on 24th November. Never in my worst nightmares did I ever imagine losing my soulmate, my best friend so early and the consequences of being widowed. We had another 10, 15, or perhaps even 20 years together. Terje had been looking forward to his birthday on 30th November which would mark his retirement from the Police Academy in Oslo. We both looked forward to the coming years in Tavira, without him having to commute back to his work in Norway every few weeks. Tavira is the city we have called home for almost 5 years. All our dreams and plans together are gone vanished. This is the real reality of Covid-19. In my opinion, the medical staff at Faro hospital gave Terje dedicated medical care and did everything in their power to save him. Unfortunately, they are so very short staffed, they have very little time to communicate with the patients as individuals. On 21st December I found the courage to unpack Terje’s personal possessions returned to me by the hospital. Inside I found some heartbreaking notes written by him on paper towels and marked ‘DO NOT THROW’ in Portuguese and English. Miraculously, they were not discarded. Terje was always making notes about situations that concerned him, funny stories, or ideas for a book he hoped to write one day. Interestingly they were written in English and not Norwegian, his native language. He obviously wrote these notes as a reminder to himself of his experiences

34

with the intention of doing something positive with them after he recovered. But did he write his notes in English, so I could better understand should he not survive and therefore I can take action on his behalf to hopefully reduce the suffering of other patients in the future? The notes are scrambled and sometimes repetitive. Yet, his frustration and fear comes through very clearly. He writes about wanting to be seen as a person, not an illness. As a psychotherapist and educator, he was observant and perhaps more aware of how patients should be treated. These are some extracts from his notes: ● Not trying to tell you how to run a hospital or ICU ● Thoughts from a Covid patient I’m not always awake and you threw away my last notes ● Awareness – are you ok? How are you feeling? Are you tired now? ● Staff too distracted/easy to forget. Then I need to nag if I need water or my sleeping pill – very tiresome and frustrating when in a vulnerable situation ● Unnecessary nagging for them AND for me/patients ● Doctors – make time for me – tell me my situation ● PATIENT, PATIENT, PATIENT first See them always – be there – make their day ● The nurse’s job is to make the patient believe, inspire them, motivate, give hope ● Say ‘hi’, a thumbs up – takes 15 seconds but means EVERYTHING ● 2 hours and more than 10 people passed not seeing me – do I need anything? ● See the individual - we are all different. BUT everyone needs to be seen When I was lucky enough to see Terje through the window the day before he was ventilated, I had a conversation in the car park with one of his nurses. They are so very frustrated by not having the time to

sit with the patients as much as they would like, to reassure and comfort them - an important part of the healing process. She told me when she gets back to her room, exhausted after a very long shift, she feels angry that she hasn’t had the time to do the real role of a nurse, they barely have the time to make sure the technicalities of the job are completed. A doctor told me there is only one physician, this same physician is on duty to cover 12 patients on Covid ICU every 24 hours. Nurses don’t stay on the same ward or unit for the full shift. They rotate across different areas every couple of hours to where they are most needed. Where is the continuity of care? Doctors and nurses don’t get to see their families or loved ones as they live at the hospital 24/7 to reduce the risk of spreading the virus. I don’t want to repeat how difficult it is to get information or the infrequency of being contacted as a loved one of a seriously ill family member. I was promised Terje would never be put on a ventilator without them contacting me first. This never happened. If someone had called me and held a phone to his ear, I could have spent even just 60 seconds to reassure him and tell him how much I loved him – this, with the benefit of hindsight, would have been the last time I’d speak to him. A senior doctor friend at a private hospital in the Algarve told me that this is only the tip of the iceberg. Elective surgeries and outpatient clinics are being cancelled so all resources can focus on the Covid crisis. This is not just a problem in Portugal, it is a global problem. So what do I do now? The wonderful Portuguese people have a culture of never challenging or complaining directly to authorities or people who can make a difference. I am a foreigner with a fighting spirit and I intend to tell our story through the media, in the hope that someone in the

www.eastalgarvemag.com

Outdoors People Portuguese government, at the very least, hears the reality of living with Covid – be it directly or indirectly in some economically related way – and then takes action to improve the support. If hospitals recruited family liaison persons who could spend time talking to the patients and their family members, it would relieve the medical professionals to totally focus on the technical care. Why don’t hospitals in Portugal, as they do in other countries, appeal to retired medical staff to come in as volunteers to increase the number of employees? We are in a state of crisis. What about the lack of support from local councils to ensure the Portuguese people are being fed and housed in these terrible economic times, especially those who are impacted by a lack of tourists? For those of you who still believe Coronavirus is just a bad flu it isn’t! Deaths recorded worldwide today, since the start of the disease, are at 1.8 million. That is 1.8 million families who have a story to tell. When you lose a loved one, after almost six weeks of suffering, without being able to hold their hand, without being able to visit them or say goodbye, when you can do nothing and you are powerless, the realisation of how horrendous this virus truly is, will hit you. PLEASE obey the rules. Wear your masks without complaining, keep your social distance, and wake up to the reality. And although we have no quarantine or testing rules in Portugal for those coming in from overseas, I believe those travellers should take personal responsibility to selfisolate or at the very least make sure they wear their masks and social distance for two weeks (symptoms can appear between 2 - 14 days). We also have to start being accountable and telling the travellers they should do this if we see they are ignoring the advice. For those of you still playing sports such as paddle tennis, golf, walking football, etc. is it worth the risk without masks or social distancing yourselves? Some of you may be aware that Terje and I own the Pink Flamingo Croquet and Social Club at Pedras da Rainha in Cabanas. On Sunday 27th December we laid a stone at our primary lawn in Terje’s memory. Due to the rising numbers of those infected by Covid in the Tavira municipality, we are currently closed but will open again when the risk lowers with, as before, masks and social distancing. As a non-profit association we have held fundraising events for the Bombeiros, and more recently, East Algarve Families in Need (EAFIN). In March we identified there was very little support for local families who were suffering economically due to Coronavirus damaging tourism and local businesses. We started the EAFIN initiative with monetary and food donations, together with the excellent help from some marvellous volunteers, we were able to feed

www.eastalgarvemag.com

over 1000 families from Vila Real de Santo Antônio, to Tavira, to São Brás de Alportel and a lot of places in between. We may not be in lockdown now, but we can all see the restaurants, hotels and bars are suffering, many are closing down and staff are being laid off. This has a ripple effect on suppliers too. Realistically, these establishments were only vibrant from the start of July to mid-September. It’s a very rough winter, and for many, it was a non-existent Christmas. We fully anticipate the situation worsening between now and Easter and possibly beyond. Are you aware that without an employment contract for the previous eighteen months there are no government benefits and many employees work as daily hires for cash? EAFIN was started again in November by a close friend, leading it in my absence whilst Terje was sick, even though we have low funds and few supplies. In the past month, we have delivered to approximately 150 families which included 102 adults and 68 children in the week leading up to Christmas. We desperately need your help, so we, in turn, can help those in need. We need volunteers (drivers and packers), but of course, we desperately need non-perishable foods and essential items, or monetary donations. Pasta, rice, flour, sugar, olive oil, stock cubes, cornflakes, tins of beans; tuna; sardines, frankfurters, and tinned tomatoes. Also hand soap, toothpaste, baby diapers, washing powder, and cleaning detergents. Meats, eggs, cheeses, bread, and vegetables we purchase on a daily basis from our funds. Do you have too much fruit and vegetables in your garden,

would you like to donate them? You can drop off food and essential items at Pedras da Rainha reception in Cabanas anytime; on Wednesday mornings between 10:00 and 12:00 at EAFIN headquarters in Tavira (the old music school behind the Black Anchor and opposite the bike hire shop); Tavira 2nd Chance shop on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays (Rua Dr. Parriera 29A, Tavira) and as always the Black Anchor pub in Tavira during opening hours. Monetary donations can be made by PayPal via contact@ pinkflamingocroquet.com (Reference EAFIN) or by bank transfer to our dedicated EAFIN account in the name of Denise Dahl IBAN PT50 0033 0000 4549 2035 1420 5 Every euro donated goes directly to purchasing food and essential supplies. No expenses are paid to volunteers or administration. To date, donations in memory of Terje at his church service on December 17th in Tavira, bank donations, and via PayPal have raised €2600. CHRISTMAS IN A BOX Terje was inspired to help local children from struggling families to have something to open this Christmas. Thank you to everyone who donated toys and candy which were labelled from Santa and his elf Terje. This was a tribute to such the fantastic man I have been so lucky to be with for the past twenty years. Our EAFIN volunteers delivered to over 70 children aged between 6 months and 16 years a few days before Christmas. Thank you to all the EAFIN volunteers and everyone continuing to support us with food and monetary donations helping local families to struggle less. I will end this article with a lesson learnt from Terje and from this experience. Don’t sweat the small stuff (don’t let small arguments or differences bother you), don’t be so judgmental of others - none of us know what history we all have and be more forgiving and tolerant. BAD ADVICE...

Ask the

Expat

Not all advice is good and not all people are as genuine as you may think. Enjoy our 'bad advice' column from the expert we've all met, know and love... the Expat.

T

oday in Our Bad Advice, we are joined by a panel of two prominent local individuals determined to provide you, our local East Algarve Expats, with a helping hand of inconsistent but broad bottomed and heartfelt advice. Today we are joined by Sabrina and Evi of the Elite Algarve Landlord Alliance who are seeking to empower the interests of landlords in the Algarve. “I am writing to you because I need urgent advice about my tenants. I am appalled that they have given us three months' notice because they learnt we were overcharging them and they dared to criticise us for being unresponsive as landlords. They complained of winter mould and dampness. We told them, if they didn’t breathe, there would not be any, they can hold their breath! Regarding a leaky lavatory, we also told them we have no duty to repair it and that this expectation is to be met by tenants, especially overweight ones who crack the plumbing with their abhorrent waste. With five months left, we have demanded they pay the entire year and shockingly these lots refused. We are sitting in one of our other houses in Bordeaux and are disgusted at their intention to quit. They shouldn’t be allowed to as we are off to an Antiques Auction today, which this Algarvian house was due to fund as a spoke in our multinational empire. We have threatened them with international solicitors, who we haven’t actually spoken to yet, but they have thrown back the law of Portugal at us! We are horrified that as tax exiles and property owners, we are expected to fulfil any duties to gain profits. We are refusing to return any deposits, so they are refusing to pay any rent. We also gave a detailed inventory of each item in the flat, and warned that there will be a minimum of 100 Euro fines for any broken

36

items, be it glass, unmatching crockery, or scuff marks. We have demanded more money, but they are refusing to give us any - like the thieving vermin they are. Other than writing pitiful messages on Expat Facebook pages about our plight, how can we deal with these appalling "rogue tenants”? Sabrina: Quite right, there is nothing more appalling than the interference of the state in property owners business, which is why at the Elite Algarve Landlord’s Association we offer illicit advice and tactics of manipulation, deception, and intimidation, though without any legal duress and disclaimers of legal non-accuracy. There is nothing worse than an ungrateful tenant who seeks out information about how to support themselves. As Elite people, we have regular quarterly meetings at the Opulence Golf Club and Resort to extend our networks and protection rackets. We have great associations, with roughies for hire, who are indispensable at collecting debts that are not owed or hiring individuals posing as Portuguese law enforcement. Of course, this is all off the record, but if you join our association, people will know you mean business! Evi: It also seems you were somewhat naive in your approach. Might I suggest creating false picture property adverts and demanding a full year's rent upfront, if you remain outside of the country? Portuguese and European rights are very pedantic, but let’s face it, there are always loopholes to find and ways to maximise your profits with minimal efforts on your part. Sabrina: Yes Evi, it seems inventories are a useful way of extorting more money. If you discover the tenant hasn’t taken a dated video of the house, always claim more damage. If you offer basic amenities such as Ikea plates, always claim that they were

Furstenberg. If they demand repairs, claim it was they who caused the damage. Evi: We would love to meet you as a fellow Elite. Breathe in, as we know the difficulties of letting property to inconveniences who should not have been born, let alone have rights, not to mention stain your atmosphere and furniture...

My new year's resolution:

A

more empathy

New Year's resolution is a tradition found all around the world. It is the decision to do or not do something to accomplish a personal goal or break a habit. It comes at a time when people look back at the past year and make an effort to improve themselves as the New Year begins. One of my resolutions for this New Year is to spread the word EMPATHY and its meaning, so we can be better persons, and build a community. Empathy is the ability to recognise, understand, and share the thoughts and feelings of another person, animal, or fictional character. Developing empathy is crucial for establishing relationships and behaving compassionately. It enables pro-social or helping behaviors that come from within, rather than being forced. Empathy helps us cooperate with others, build friendships, make moral decisions, and intervene when we see others being bullied. Humans begin to show signs of empathy in infancy (starting at 18 months old) and the trait develops steadily through childhood and adolescence. Most people are likely to feel greater empathy for people like themselves and feel less empathy for those outside their family, community, ethnicity, or race. Are empathy, sympathy, compassion synonyms? Empathy, sympathy, and compassion are often, incorrectly, used interchangeably. Sympathy is feeling concern for someone else, and a desire that they become happier. Empathy involves sharing a person’s emotions. Sympathy is sharing the feelings of another… understanding someone else's suffering. It's more cognitive in nature and keeps a certain distance. Empathy is understanding feelings, but not necessarily sharing them, requiring an emotional component of really feeling and experiencing what the other person feels and thinks. Compassion is empathic understanding of feelings accompanied with altruism, the desire to act on that person's behalf. Contemporary researchers often differentiate

www.eastalgarvemag.com

between two types of empathy: Affective empathy - sensations and feelings gotten in response to others emotions; including mirroring what that person is feeling. Cognitive empathy - the ability to identify and understand other people’s emotions (sometimes called “perspective taking”). The neuroscience of empathy Empathy has been associated with two different pathways in the brain, scientists have speculated that some aspects of empathy can be traced to mirror neurons, cells in the brain that fire when we observe someone else performing an action in much the same way that they would fire if we performed that action ourselves. Research has also uncovered evidence of a genetic basis to empathy, though studies suggest that people can enhance (or restrict) their natural empathic abilities. Having empathy doesn’t necessarily mean we’ll want to help someone in need, though it’s often a vital first step toward compassionate action. Empathy and Rapport, what's the difference Rapport is defined as a close and harmonious relationship, understanding each other's feelings or ideas and communicating well. A relationship characterised by agreement, mutual understanding, or empathy that makes communication possible or easier. Empathy is the ability to understand and share the feelings of another and Rapport is a close and harmonious relationship in which people or groups understand each other's feelings or ideas and communicate well. What do we understand about feelings? And is there any difference between feelings and emotions? Feelings are mental experiences and are conscious. If they were not, we could not have knowledge of their existence. Feelings are the experience of some aspects of life state in an organism. These experiences are a report about the life state in each moment in the interior of the organism. The terms feeling and emotion are used as synonyms, but they are not interchangeable. While they have similar elements, there is

a marked difference between feelings and emotions. Feelings are both emotional experiences and physical sensations. Feelings are a conscious experience. According to Psychology Today, an emotion “can only ever be felt…through the emotional experiences it gives rise to, even though it might be discovered through its associated thoughts, beliefs, desires, and actions.” A fundamental difference between feelings and emotions is that feelings are experienced consciously, while emotions manifest either consciously or subconsciously. So, to check if you, dear reader, are an empathic person, ask yourself the items below, see if there is anything you can do to improve and become a better person for your community and world: ● I always try to put myself in the other person’s shoes when they’re describing how they feel – whatever the situation. ● I don’t believe – or tell people – that I “know exactly how they feel”. ● I believe that it's important to listen to their perspective in order to get under the skin of the issue. ● I resist the temptation to mentally tick off a “Yes, yes, I know exactly why this is happening and what to do about it”. ● I genuinely care about this person’s interests, agenda and issues. ● I care about people. If you want to become more empathic and supportive in 2021, you can assist one of our children and teenagers needing rehabilitation treatments in our Association. Many of whom suffer from development delay, autism and rare diseases. Their parents bear high costs with therapies, and a little help would help to ease the monthly bills of these special families. Please contact SER Igual: Tel: 918 100 020 or email geral@seronline.pt if you would like to assist any child in their therapeutic process and come along to visit. Thanks for sharing your time reading my thoughts for these New Year's resolution. Stay safe and stay tuned for my next month's article.

How your diet affects your blood sugar levels

T

Ellen McCCallum from Naturopathic Nutrition Tavira explains how a balanced blood sugar helps a balanced mood, hormones, weight, energy and sleep

he body is an incredible thing, with an innate capacity for selfhealing. We can see this easily in our immune system: if we catch a cold or encounter a harmful pathogen, the immune system immediately starts a process of reactions to eliminate the pathogen and creates memory cells which will enable the body to recognise that pathogen more quickly the next time it is encountered. Many processes of self-healing go on all the time without us having to do anything special or to change things, but sometimes homeostasis is altered to an extent that something needs to change, and this is definitely the case with dysregulated blood sugar. Healthy blood sugar levels help to keep stress hormones low, energy constant, sleep deep and refreshing, and inflammation in check, which in turn reduces our risk of chronic health issues like diabetes, heart disease, and auto-immune conditions. Cries for help Fortunately, the body is rather good at letting us know when things are out of balance and the good news is that blood sugar imbalance is possible to reverse, it does not lead to a life sentence of medication and ill-health.

38

Some of the most common symptoms of dysregulated blood sugar include: • Belly fat and or man boobs • Fatigue • Energy crashes • Waking up feeling sluggish • Finding it hard to concentrate • Feeling irritable – or ‘hangry’ (irritation soothed by eating) • Feeling on edge or moody • Headaches • Increased sweating • Craving sugar or carbohydrate rich foods • Hormonal problems What can tip the balance? Carbohydrates and sugar cause insulin to be released from the pancreas which in turn triggers the cells to take in glucose and amino acids from the blood. This is normal and necessary for the cells to produce energy and carry out their physiological processes. If we eat more carbohydrates than is needed the excess glucose gets stored as glycogen in the liver and muscles. When the glycogen stores are full, the glucose can be converted into fatty acids and triglycerides. This excess fat is then stored in the body often around the middle and in men, it can produce the so-

called ‘man boobs.’ In short, high sugar and or high levels of refined carbohydrates switch on genes for sugar burning and fat storage. Low fibre diets, especially if they are also of poor nutrient status, result in irregular insulin balance, which in turn affects the adrenal glands and then other bodily systems. The minerals and fibre present in unrefined foods are the nutrients we need to regulate blood sugar and in refined foods, these are stripped out. Alcohol consumption affects blood sugar as the resources of the liver get diverted into clearing alcohol from the system instead of managing blood sugar. Drinking on an empty stomach can lead to rapid symptoms of low blood sugar. Exercise is incredibly positive for blood sugar regulation making the body more sensitive to insulin. Stress causes the adrenal glands to release glucose from various organs which can result in increased sugar in the bloodstream. If this is repeated too frequently, it becomes harder to gain blood sugar control. It is easy to think of stress as an emotional problem, but stress can be caused by eating something that disagrees with us, toxins, illness, and difficult situations.

5 Top Tips for Blood Sugar Support Whilst the processes underlying blood sugar management can seem complicated, stabilising blood sugar can be surprisingly simple. Start the day well with a breakfast that includes some protein and healthy fats, these will help to keep insulin levels balanced. This could be an omelette with some cooked diced sweet potato and greens which are folded into the eggs or some wholemeal toast with nut butter and fresh, lower carbohydrate fruit such as apples, pears, oranges, or berries. Swap the processed carbohydrates and sugary foods for complex carbohydrates, natures' natural blood sugar regulators. Good foods to include are beans and pulses, whole grains, and a wide variety of vegetables. Eat an organic rainbow – eating a wide range of colourful foods ensures that we get many phytonutrients, these support healthy blood sugar. Organic foods tend to have fewer toxins that must be processed by the liver thus diverting resources from blood sugar management. Exercise regularly, this positively affects muscle metabolism and helps regulate blood sugar. Reduce stress – this could mean avoiding certain situations, lowering intake of stimulants such as caffeine, or taking positive steps to include regular relaxing activities in your day. The

Almond A tree of myths and legends

40

www.eastalgarvemag.com

Gardens

A

lmonds are members of the Rosaceae (rose) family, along with many other tree fruits such as peaches, apples, pears, plums, cherries, and apricots. Within the genus Prunus, almond is most closely related to the peach, and the two crops share the subgenus Amygdalus. Almond and related species are native to the Mediterranean climate region of the Middle East (Pakistan eastward to Syria and Turkey). The almond and its close relative, the peach, probably evolved from the same ancestral species in south-central Asia. Almonds were domesticated at least by 3000 BC, and perhaps much earlier since wild almonds have been unearthed in Greek archeological sites dating to 8000 BC. The almond was spread

www.eastalgarvemag.com

along the shores of the Mediterranean in northern Africa and southern Europe by Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans. It was brought to California in the 1700s by Spanish Padres who settled the Mission at Santa Barbara. Around the turn of the century, the industry started in California, due to development of superior cultivars in the late 1800s. Tariffs on almond imports were levied to protect the industry. From then until about 1960, the industry grew at a moderate pace, but acreage and production have increased several-fold since then, making California the clear world leader in almond production. In 2002, there were over 500,000 acres of almonds in California, making it the most widely planted tree crop in the state. Almonds are commonly mistake for a variety of nut, but the

almond is actually the seed of a fruit of an almond tree, which is part of the same family of the peach tree. The fruit of the almond even looks like a peach, which eventually splits and releases the seed, the almond. Following these guidelines will help you successfully grow an almond tree of your own. There are two types, bitter and sweet. Sweet almonds are cultivated as food; bitter almonds, which contain prussic acid, are grown mostly for their rootstocks on which sweet almonds are grafted. Almonds are raised for ornamental and nutritional reasons. Like other nuts, almonds are high in vitamin B and protein. One cup of shelled almonds contains 26 grams of protein, 77 grams of fat, 28 grams of carbohydrates, 332 milligrams of calcium, and small amounts of vitamins B, and B2, iron, and niacin. The first consideration you need to make is your climate region. Almond trees need warm summers and cool winters, so we can grow almonds happily here, but if your garden sees some frost, you probably won't be able to grow an almond tree outdoors. Similarly, if your region is hot all year round, you will probably not be successful and it's best to pick a different type of tree to grow. Almond trees are native to the Middle East, so any area around the same latitudinal region should grow fine. Having said this, almond trees can be grown with success indoors in these climates with proper planning and know how. Secondly, almond trees are not self-pollinating. If you want your tree to produce almonds, you have to have at least two trees of different varieties. Almond trees aren't especially tall, usually growing from 4 to 10 meters, so this isn't a major concern for growing outdoors, but this may rule out growing trees inside because two are required to produce almonds. Flowers bloom in the Spring, and in December pollen grains appear, and by January the buds grow very rapidly. This is the reason almond trees cannot grow in regions that have snow or frost, but they still need a cool winter to activate growth of the buds and pollen. The best time to plant almond trees is January to February, because the colder temperature stops leaf buds from appearing and keeps the growth focus on the roots which is extremely important in the early

42

stages of growth. Almonds need to be grown in areas that receive full sunlight. Once you've found a suitable spot, the tree should be planted in a hole deep enough so that the roots are not bent or crowded together. Young almonds trees often struggle with heavy winds because they grow rapidly when new, so it's strongly suggested that you brace the tree. Simply place a shaft of wood or pipe in the ground next to your tree and tie it to the brace. This gives the tree support against winds so it grows straight and sturdy. Once your almond tree is grown, it's a good habit to prune your tree to maintain it. Pruning simply involves cutting off dead or dying branches at the base of the trunk. You can also thin out any parts of the tree that are beginning to look overcrowded. The best time to prune is in late winter before buds and new growth appears in the tree. Following these guidelines should keep your almond trees fertile and hearty for years to come. The almond requires a sandy, well-drained soil, neutral or tending slightly to the alkaline. Since good drainage is essential, plenty of humus should be present to hold moisture while permitting excess water to drain away. The hole where the tree is going should be just large enough to receive the roots without bending or crowding them. If a soil auger is used, it should be 24-inches in diameter and the sides of the hole should be broken down to eliminate the auger's glazing effect. Compost or manure should never be placed at the bottom of the hole. It can create problems for the tree.

The roots of the tree run deep. It is advisable to break up the topsoil thoroughly and to as great a depth as possible before planting and then fertilize with plenty of organic matter. Many commercial growers plant cover crops which are then turned under for green manure, protecting the ground and enriching the soil. This practice should not be necessary on the small homestead where only a few trees are planted. Compost should be worked in late in the autumn. Place straw mulch under the tree but not close to the trunk. Almond trees begin to bear in three or four years and should be in full production in 12 years. Nuts should be harvested when those in the centre of the tree are ripe. Nuts which fall to the ground before the regular harvest time should be cleaned up daily to prevent disease. After harvesting, shell and dry the nuts. The kernels should be spread for drying in a shady location until the meat is crisp. Kernels can be stored in airtight jars and kept in cool places. According to this delightful story, during the time when Al Garb still belonged to the Moors, there reigned a young Caliph in Silves called Ibn-Almundim, who fell in love and married Gilda, the daughter of a great lord from the North, who had been defeated in battle by the Moorish king. Their love was mutual, and the marriage was celebrated in grand style. However, the beautiful princess grew sadder day by day, with the Caliph unable to make her smile. They consulted magicians and wise men from all over the world, but none could find a cure for her sadness… Until one day when an old Nordic man told the king that Gilda was longing for the white snow-covered fields of her homeland. Ibn-Almundim then ordered thousands of almond trees to be planted outside the windows of the palace, which, when they were in blossom, covered the land with white petals. The illusion took away her longing and she became joyful once more. And this is why, since that spring so long ago, the Algarve relives each year the magic of the almond blossom.

Tax calendar: dates to put in your diary for 2021

W

e wish all readers a healthy year of 2021, and it is our desire that the new year is much easier to everyone than the year we just said goodbye to. Below you can find some of the dates that you need to put in your diary, concerning taxes in Portugal. Please remember that before you submit your IRS you need to perform some tasks as per the new habits acquired in the previous years: tasks like validating, or registering invoices at the tax portal are now procedures that have become part of the routine of any taxpayer. Your role is important in determining your IRS deductions, therefore check the tax calendar, to make sure you don’t lose any deduction or pay any fines. JANUARY If you have a business activity which was VAT exempt under article 53, but in 2020 you exceeded the VAT threshold, then you need to change your VAT status until the 31st of January. Likewise, if you were paying VAT but did not exceed the threshold in 2020 and wish to become exempt, the same deadline applies. If you have a rental contract and are not obliged to issue monthly rental receipts, you have until the 31st of January to declare the yearly rental income for 2020. FEBRUARY Each taxpayer has until the 25th of February to query, report and verify invoices. To do this you should access the e-Factura portal and access your personal page, where you should verify if all your invoices have been properly communicated. If you find any failure, or any invoice is not recorded, you can add these invoices to your file. It is also important to check in which category your invoices are recorded and move them into the appropriate section (ie health, education, etc), otherwise the deduction will not be accepted. These procedures need to be performed for each household expenditure holder, including dependants. It is also important to update, or register your household for tax purposes, before 15/02. Please note that this can be very important, not only for tax purposes, but also for other related matters, such as inscription at schools, kindergarten, etc and/or other tax benefits you may be entitled to.

44

MARCH If you became a resident in Portugal in 2020 and want to apply for the Non-Habitual Residency scheme, you have until the end of March to submit your application at the tax portal. During March, you also need to check your e-fatura page at the tax portal and if you feel the information is not correct, you can challenge the calculations made by the Tax Authorities. In other words, your tax deductions will be summarised here, under family general expenses, healthcare expenses, training and education expenses, charges with property for permanent residence, invoices VAT and costs with foster homes; if your total invoices is not consistent with the one totals shown in the portal, you have this two weeks window to contest it. Please note that it’s necessary to check this for each taxpayer. APRIL You can submit your IRS tax declaration for 2020, from the 1st of April, until the end of June. This means that all declarations can be submitted during these three months, irrespective of your income category (employment income, pension income, selfemployment income, rentals, etc.) Please note that all residents, include NonHabitual Residents, need to submit a tax declaration, even if they’re income is only pensions, and tax exempt, they still have to fulfil this obligation. All non-residents that have income from Portuguese source (ie property rentals, sale of a property, etc) also need to submit a yearly declaration. MAY Payment of the first instalment of the IMI council tax. If in your case, the council tax is lower than 100€, this will be the only payment date you need to remember. If it is higher, please look for other instalment dates in August and November. JUNE Do not forget to submit the IRS for 2020 by the end of June. Please remember that if you do not deliver your IRS on time, or if you fail to meet some of the deadlines above, you may lose some or all of your tax deductions. Late delivery of your IRS may also cancel your IMI (Council Tax) exemption. JULY If you have IRS tax to receive, the settlement

must be made by 31st of July. This is the deadline for the Tax Authorities to refund you. AUGUST If you have IRS tax to pay, you should make the payment no later than the last day of August, providing you have delivered the tax return within the time limits. If the tax return was submitted after the deadline, payment may be made until 31st of December (fines and interest will apply). The second instalment of the IMI council tax is due this month. This is applicable for all those where the yearly IMI payment is higher than 500€ per taxpayer. SEPTEMBER If you have AIMI (additional council tax) to pay, this needs to be paid by the end of September. Remember that you are liable for AIMI payment on all properties owned by companies. Individual owners are only exempt from AIMI, in the first 600 thousand Euros worth of property (based on the tax value and not in the commercial value). NOVEMBER Payment of the third and last instalment of the IMI council tax. This is applicable for all those where the yearly IMI payment is higher than 100€ per taxpayer. RECURRING DATES Please remember that if you have a business activity, you need to report your sales file by the 10th of each month. This also includes rental income from AL license holders. Each month you also need to issue your monthly rental receipts in case you have a rental contract registered. The car tax needs to be paid by the last day of the month when the car was registered. Please do not forget this as the fines are high in this case. If you have a business activity, please remember that each quarter you need to submit a social security declaration. To ascertain how much social security you will pay each month in the following quarter. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us; tax planning is critical and you and your company cannot afford surprises. Contact our office to discuss your personal situation and avoid any unnecessary fines.

The Pensions Conundrum

A

s another new year begins, new plans are set in place, and changes are made. And pensions, the topic of this article, have seen a few of their own changes over time also. Good and bad! A little over a decade ago, women could claim their state pension when they turned 60, and men at 65. With recent changes, the qualifying age for both sexes fell in line with one another, and almost four million women born after March 1950 felt the impact of this as the government increased the state pension age from 60 to 66. Gender equality wasn’t supposed to be financially painful for women. Yet that’s how it has been described by all those who experienced the sharp rise in the female state pensionable age since 2010. Another significant marker in 2010 was how the number of people (male and female) retiring after the age of 70 had doubled. Research conducted by the Institute for Fiscal Studies in 2017, found that the increase in the pension age had placed notable pressure on the poverty rate of women in their early sixties. The 1940 Old Age and Widow’s Pensions Act introduced the 60/65 disparity in favour of women in an era of what was known as entrenched gender discrimination. It was an era when women were expected to devote themselves to the home raising children, while men were seen as the main earner of a family. The earlier pension age for females spilled over into an environment of extreme disadvantage for women in the workplace, when they tended to earn much less in comparison to men and accumulated far fewer years of national insurance contributions. The past 70 years has however, seen a dramatic change in the workplace structure and with the working age employment rate gap closing. Recent analysis conducted by Aegon

revealed that 15% of women are likely to decrease their pension contributions over the next five months, compared to 10% of men, meaning the pandemic, apart from everything else, may set us back some years and further widen the gender pensions gap. The research also found that men were more likely to take advantage of possible future economic recovery by investing more into their pensions. That means, men seem to be investing to increase value on their assets, while women are becoming more cautious and holding on to what they have - pushed on by uncertainty. It would, however, be very unfortunate if the equality debate were to overshadow discussion of other, deeper-set problems with UK pensions. Afterall, one of the reasons the state pension gender equalisation debate even gets the attention it does is because it is relatively easy to understand. Far bigger injustices are lurking in the sphere of the private, rather than state, pension. The introduction of “auto-enrolment” of workers into “defined contribution” workplace schemes in 2012 was a good reform, using people’s natural inertia to nudge them gently toward saving effectively – and the results were quite impressive with the proportion of employees covered shooting up from around half to three-quarters in 2018. This was because there was rampant ignorance and confusion among the public about how the kind of pensions which they were being enrolled, actually functioned. A 2018 survey targeting employers on the importance of educating their staff, found that around a quarter of people, aged 55 and over, admitted that they didn’t know how their pensions worked and never even checked their own pension pots. In a 2016 speech, labeled ‘the great divide,’ the Bank of England’s own chief economist, Andy Haldane, confessed to being baffled

by pensions. The same Haldane that said in March 2017 that "Bad managers stand accused of holding back economic growth in the UK by undermining productivity, preventing pay, and living standards rising. The question has to be, has anything been done to rectify this knowledge gap since? Well… the government did finally get around to the promised “pension dashboard” so people can monitor their pension pots. To make income drawdown less confusing and help people make well-informed decisions, the FCA also set out several proposals and recommendations recently. And the new rules will be coming into force from August 2020. But aside from the general importance of saving, it’s evident that through the years very little, if anything, was done in the form of mainstream education until the last decade, that’s why there should be a much broader government-sponsored financial literacy drive to introduce people to the basics of compound interest, inflation, portfolio diversification, annuities, and the fundamental importance of keeping costs down. On further investigation, and a factor in the new proposals, was that the FCA discovered that a third of people who didn’t receive advice currently have their savings invested in cash or cash-like assets – meaning they could be losing out on significant returns. So, the knowledge gap is still there – and still sizeable even today. Clearly, it’s not just gender equality in the state pension age that’s an issue here, there’s a much broader gender equality in a paralysing sense. And that is believing our pensions are out of our control when they’re not! That’s why all of us – women and men alike – should seek the proper advice and get to work on finding out what we can do today to invest and start producing healthy returns for the future. Our future!

SWEET SENSATION Maureen LoBue visits Pastelaria Jardim, the most Portuguese Pastelaria in the Algarve!

Y

ou can find pastry shops on almost every corner. But where can you find a truly Portuguese pastry shop? Where does the irresistible sweet aroma of freshly baked traditional almond cakes and pastel de natas draw you in as you walk past the door? Where can you feel a warm, genuine Portuguese welcome when you succumb to the aroma and walk in? Where can you stand in front of a gigantic colorful display case of special recipes and handmade delicacies carried on from generations of local pastry chefs, to face the most difficult decision of your day, “Which one do I choose?” “We are real Portuguese” I found it... in Monte Gordo. Pastelaria Jardim is so special that the customers refer to it as 'my garden'. “Come meet me at my garden”

they say to friends. I chatted with a couple who comes here every Sunday after walking through the forest with their dog. When I asked why they come to this same place every week their response was, “They have the best and freshest cakes anywhere, the best coffee, and they even provide water for our dog.” Curious about what makes Jardim stand out amongst all the other pastelarias in the area, I sat down with the owner Emanuel Alexandre over a smooth coffee and of course a piece of almond cake. Before even speaking, his pride in the business was clear. “We are real Portuguese. We have kept our origin in each dish and in each cake.” The pastries are amazing. But it's more than that. Emanuel has been working hard since the age of 16. Over the years he has formed the philosophy to always do your best. “I

want to do it better, improve always, do better today than yesterday, better tomorrow than today. It's important to look back over the past and ask what have I done to improve business, life, and for the people around me?” How does he do that? By focusing on his clients, some of whom have been coming to the shop for years, and by helping to create a destination. I'm not the Owner. I just have the key. The clients own it! So, is this a cooperative? No, it is Emanuel's shop but without the clients, it is only walls and windows. “The most important is the connection with the client. The way you talk with the client, the way you ask exactly what they want and give it to them in that way every time.” That's the Portuguese welcome, the

connection that says I remember you and I value you. I came into the shop one day and chose a pastry to go. The next time I came in, the server asked if I had enjoyed it and would I like the same one again. That made me feel like part of their family. The other important person who has the key to the success of Jardim is the talented pastry chef, Hugo Reis. His pride in his vocation is as strong as that of Emanuel, shown in the way he stood tall while holding out one of his specialty cakes, made from the traditional recipe. Hugo grew up in Portugal, trained as a chef, then went to Spain to work. But he is back for the past 2 years making these wonderful creations. According to Emanuel, “He is one of the 5 best pastry chefs in Portugal, in my opinion.” Even the staff can't resist sneaking a treat

now and then. It's all about the destination! It took me a minute to understand this part of Emanuel's philosophy. But once I got it, I realised this is a major factor in Jardim's success. People are comfortable when they feel a connection to an area. It makes them want to return again and again. In Emanuel's words, “This is an institution that is much more than me. Our shop improves the destination for everyone, all our neighbours.” Businesses in the area work together to support each other. “It's all about the destination, not the business, so we all need to do our best. We support each other in the businesses to improve the destination.” Now that I've found this wonderful pastelaria, I'm going to follow Emanuel's philosophy and share it with my neighbours. If you're

looking for traditional Portuguese pastries and excellent coffee, served by people who will make you feel welcome, come meet me in my garden! A taste of home for those that are away from home! Emanuel goes above and beyond for his foreign customers by offering them a special service. He is more than willing to re-create the flavours his customers long for and miss from their home countries. Feel free to come in for a chat any time. Pastelaria Jardim R. Be More Like Bobby – the Character of a Champion

T

Ever noticed how some golfers get really angry when they have hit a poor shot, or missed a putt. By Peter Ibbs

hey swear and curse out loud, hit the ground so hard they create a big hole, damage tees and greens, throw or maybe even break their club. Yet, if you ask people why they play golf, they play for pleasure and enjoyment, the fresh air, the company of people with whom they play and the competition golf involves. No one I have ever met says they play golf to get frustrated, to get upset, to get angry or to beat themselves up. So, my question is: “why does golf bring on all these negative emotions”? So, my next question is, “What can we do about it”? Maybe, “Be like Bobby Jones” "The object of golf is to beat someone. Make sure that someone is not yourself." Bobby Jones Bobby Jones, an all time golfing great was once described as having the face of an angel and the temper of a timber wolf. At the Old Course in St. Andrews in the 1921 Open Championship, Jones hit his ball into a bunker on the 11th hole. After taking four swings and not getting out, he stormed off the course while tearing up his scorecard. His temper was well-known and there were many club-throwing incidents. Later that same year, at the U.S. Amateur in St. Louis, he threw a golf club after a bad shot and unintentionally hit a spectator. This event led to a letter from the president of the United States Golf Association, warning Jones that, “you will never play in a United States Golf Association event again unless you can learn to control your temper.” The defeats during the “Seven

52

Lean Years” taught Bobby lessons that were far more important than victories. A true champion, he used these failures to develop self-discipline and conquer his fiery temper. Once Jones learned to control his temper, he always appeared calm and focused on the golf course. Considerate of opponents and spectators, he earned a reputation for being the consummate gentleman. Of the 1921 Open incident, he reflected. "It was the most inglorious failure of my golfing life," ‘My anger was always directed at myself because I felt my efforts were not what they should be. But that is no excuse for allowing my temper to take control, and I finally began to realize that, win or lose, I had to learn to control myself. I began to understand that the breaks are bound to even up. Sometimes you think you’ve hit a shot perfectly and yet something goes wrong. At other times you hit the ball wrong and get a break that gives you an undeserved reward. I’d catch myself beginning to get mad over a rotten shot. Then I’d say to myself ‘Hey, wait a minute! Calm down. Gradually I began to get over becoming mad at myself and just concentrate on playing golf.’” At the 1925 U.S. Open at the Worcester Country Club near Boston and then at the following U.S. Open, played at the Scioto Country Club in Columbus, Ohio, Jones called penalties on himself. He lost in 1925 but won in 1926, the second of his four US Open victories He was praised nationwide for following the rules of the game when no one was watching.

Golfer Gene Sarazen commented that Jones’s decision was “the greatest display of sportsmanship I’ve ever witnessed.” Jones himself was more humble, maintaining we should all follow the rules of the game: “There is only one way to play the game. You might as well praise a man for not robbing a bank.” The USGA's sportsmanship award is named the Bob Jones Award in his honour. So, when you next want to beat yourself up for a bad shot try to release your toxic anger. Anger evaporates your focus, removes logical thinking and your ability to find constructive solutions. Golf requires that your body is relaxed and your mind is fully alert. Work on how to control how you react to the bad shots which every golfer has and accept your lucky breaks. Many players act as if their entire life depended on that last shot. Get over it, it’s not true. Breathe deeply, walk swiftly for ten paces, smile and laugh out loud. It will not change the result of the shot but it may well release the stress and also help to ensure that your next shot does not go out of bounds. We all know the saying, “Laughter is the best medicine”? Recent studies have shown that this can help relieve feelings of anxiety or stress, and improve a low mood by boosting dopamine and endorphin levels to the brain. These hormones are known to help promote positive feelings, including happiness and pleasure. The reasons many of us really play golf! Make a New Year resolution; make it a pleasurable, relaxed, anger free, golfing year. Happy golfing in 2021,
