WELCOME

Welcome...

Hello and welcome to our first issue of 2017! May we wish you all a wonderful New Year, filled with new horizons and opportunities. We hope that our year together will bring you many new and exciting editorials to read and keep you inspired. To sweep you into the year ahead we have all our usual features that keep you informed of what is going on in and around the Central Algarve. We would like to introduce two of our new features: our Energy Column brought to you by Kenneth Grondijs at SHS Almancil, together with his colleagues at the Sustainable Superstore, offering us energy solutions to our everyday living conditions here in the Algarve. Secondly is currency advice from Chantelle Frater from Currencies Direct, who will keep us in the loop regarding the current market conditions. This month we were invited by Chris & Lin O’Keefe, who head the team at Arcadia Luxury Villa Management and Rental Property Company to see their impressive portfolio of properties for Rental and hear the story of how it all began for them over 15 years ago. We visited S. Lourenço Church in Almancil, amazed by its beauty – It just had to be on our cover. The International Rotary Club based in Almancil gave us a wonderful insight into their organisation and the impressive work they do here in the Algarve. Our editorial on ‘Khadi’, explains a special choice in ethical clothing from India, Pakistan and Bangladesh that you can buy here in the Algarve. Last but not least, Josh our new edition to the Simply Algarve team: our adopted cutie from Goldra Dog Sanctuary! Please don’t forget to keep us up-to-date and let us know what you are up to. T

he Council of Ministers has approved a law to encourage the film industry in Portugal. The incentive is by way of a tax credit that can be deducted from corporation tax, "of an amount corresponding to 20 percent of the amount of eligible expenses." The government wants to transform Portugal into an attractive country for foreign film companies, according to the Ministry of Culture which points out the country is artistic and economically attractive destination for film companies. "In view of the reduction of foreign productions registered in recent years, this measure

intends to be an important step towards reversing this situation and repositioning Portugal in the global film production market," states the Ministry. It should also be noted that the percentage of the incentive can increase up to 25 percent in the case of films in the Portuguese language or "works with special cultural relevance or whose production has a very significant impact on national cinematography." If the shooting is carried out in the interior of the country, the deduction can be further increased by 25 percent, with more credits allowed if the filming included actors or technicians with disabilities.

SONAE GROUP BUYS ORGANIC FOOD CO.

S

onae Group, owner of the Continente supermarket chain and other retail brands, has bought 51 percent of the organic food business Go Natural, leaving founders Joana and Diogo Martorell with 49 percent. The plan is to open six Go Natural organic food supermarkets by the end of 2017 with Sonae MC, part of the Sonae group, opening the first Go Natural supermarket in Lisbon with a 350 m2 outlet creating 18 jobs. The expansion of the partnership for organic food retailing will involve opening five more stores in Portugal during this year. The priorities are Lisbon and Oporto. Sonae already has announced to the Stock Market regulator that it had agreed to buy 51 percent of the organic food business. Sonae MC has not revealed how much it has paid Joana and Diogo Martorell for control of their company but the business will continue its expansion of its Go Natural fast food areas with a target of 23 outlets by the end of the year.

ALGARVE HOTEL STAFF TO BE TRAINED IN EMERGENCY FIRST AID

T

he Algarve’s regional tourist board and the Algarve Regional Health Administration have signed a collaboration that will train hotel workers in life-saving techniques and the use of defibrillation equipment. The goal is to save the lives of any guest, or staff member, in any of the Algarve’s hotels who has a heart attack or is suffering from a life-threatening event. The two organisations intend to provide hotel staff at all levels with the practical skills needed to enable them to respond with confidence, there and then, should a guest have a medical emergency. According to the protocol, hotel staff also are invited to attend courses, seminars and conferences that address these same themes. "As the main tourist destination in the country, the Algarve attracts thousands of visitors every year. The excellence of our tourist offer carried through to the health care, guest safety and the emergency services that we offer. “With this pioneering protocol, we intend to prepare professionals in the tourism sector for emergency situations, taking care of the health and well-being of tourists who choose the Algarve for their holidays," said Desidério Silva, the ubiquitous president of the tourist board.

nyone who enters the church of São Lourenço is amazed by its beauty and its immensity. It is truly a labour of love, a shrine to both faith and its creators. Little is known of its architect, however, it is said that the decision to build the church in the early 18th century was based upon the local bishops view that an increase in faith was needed for the people of Almancil. There already existed a pilgrimage chapel to the saint, but when water was discovered close by, this was seen as a miracle and a sign to rebuild the church to the grand dimensions that it is today and once again dedicated to São Lourenço of Rome. The church of São Lourenço has been described as one of the finest art treasures in Southern Portugal, which offers the best example of Portuguese Baroque tile work known as azulejos. In particular, this large group of azulejos is one of the most significant pieces in the country. The elaborate cobalt-blue and white tiles designed by Policarpo de Oliveira Bernardes cover the interior walls and vaulted ceiling of the church and depict the story of São Lourenço. Ultimately portraying his martyrdom and assent to heaven in the vaulted nave. The wood carved and gilded High Altar is the work of Manuel Martins, whom it is said was the most skilled woodcarver and sculptor of the era. The church has undergone many restorations to protect and maintain its integrity. After the earthquake in 1969 the church suffered considerable damage. However, it was The DGEMN (Direcção-Geral de Edifícios e Monumentos Nacionais / General-Directorate for Buildings and National Monuments) that intervened to help restore the church to enable its doors to welcome all who enter. If you have the time to visit please do, the church is breathtaking. Times of opening and services are given on the notice board at the church. You can also gain full guides to the church and its history for you to fully appreciate one of Portugal’s many treasures.

ENERGY

Power & control: Automated, compact and simple to install, the Tesla Powerwall

I

t not only looks fantastic, it is the latest Battery technology: TESLA POWERWALL! Everybody associates Tesla with their electric sports car, but not many people are aware the company was not formed to create a car itself, it was made for the battery technology. Tesla is the world leader when it comes to Lithium technology, Tesla built a plant specifically for their Lithium Batteries, which have considerably longer performance than conventional batteries. Average DOD (Depth of Discharge) of Lead Acid or Lead Crystal batteries are around 55 percent, where the Lithium batteries have a DOD of 80 percent! In other words you get much more constant power from your Lithium batteries. TESLA HOME BATTERY Tesla Powerwall is a home battery that charges using electricity generated from solar panels. It will also power your home in the evening or when utility rates are low. Automated, compact and simple to install, TESLA Powerwall enables you to maximize self-consumption of solar power generation. The Tesla Powerwall offers 6,4Kw net storage and a 14kw version is to be announced soon! SHS is the exclusive official authorized Retailer for the Algarve. SHS Solar Solutions offers Ongrid, Semi-Offgrid and Offgrid solutions for many years to cut your electricity bill. Therefore SHS is very proud to have achieved the exclusive rights for Tesla Powerwall in the Algarve! TESLA POWERWALL ADVANTAGES Tesla Home Batteries maximize the usefulness of your solar panels and offer a variety of backup electricity supply solutions. You can even go completely off the grid! BACKUP POWER The first generation Powerwall has a 6.4Â kWh capacity for daily cycle applications. For families with larger energy needs, multiple powerwalls can be connected to expand the capacity. The Powerwall is optimized for daily cycling, such as load shifting. Tesla uses proprietary technology for packaging and cooling the cells in packs with liquid coolant.

14

www.simplyalgarvemag.com

The Tesla powerwall! enables you to maximize use of your solar power generation. HOW IT WORKS Your solar PV system will produce energy during daylight hours which you can use to help power your home and appliances. Surplus electricity generated from the solar panels during the day is stored in the Tesla Powerwall giving you the option to use your solar energy at a later time. HISTORY As solar energy is more widely adopted, a dedicated battery to store the energy makes a lot of sense. Without one, the excess power generated during peak sun hours is wasted. Latest contracts to sell back to the utility company is a waste of investment when receiving only €0,047 while buying for €0,24 per kilowatt. So Tesla made the Powerwall, which works like most other renewable energy storage systems. This battery stores electricity from solar panels and helps balance loads from the grid. It charges during non-peak energy usage hours, when the rates are lower — like the middle of the day or middle of the night — then provides you energy during morning and evening demand, when rates are higher. Tesla is the first large company to plan to manufacture energy storage and it's offering a 10-year unlimited cycle performance warranty and a 4-year warrantee on workmanship. A CLEAN WORLD The last several years have seen solar panel prices drop, solar installations increase, electric vehicle sales rise, and governments and businesses move toward integrating renewable energy into their operations. This has brought clean energy solutions closer to mainstream. So when Tesla founder Elon Musk hinted about an announcement for a new product line for renewable energy storage, suddenly, that dream became a step closer to becoming reality. To meet demand, Tesla is building its Powerwall at its upcoming Gigafactory in Nevada. This Giga-factory is the critical piece in producing lithium-ion batteries required for both future Tesla cars and battery packs. Ravi Manghani, analyst for GTM Research said. "We expect the energy storage market to grow over x10 in the next five years, and in that sense, having a company like Tesla

www.simplyalgarvemag.com

launch products signals that the expected growth is real," ALTERNATIVES Of course there are other Battery storage solutions, like Lead Acid or Lead Crystal. Advantages from alternatives: Much cheaper Easier to exchange individual batteries from a bank Disadvantages from alternatives: Only 1 or 2 years warrantee Lesser Lifetime Not as good looking as TESLA Powerwall LATEST NEWS Elon Musk will launch Solar roof tiles next year and he wants to produce Tesla electric cars and batteries in Europe - Portugal is being studied as one of the locations.Tesla management is said to have been talking ‘at the highest level’ within Portugal’s government to install its European giga-factory in the sun-blessed country. The US Company wants to manufacture cars and lithiumion batteries, "Tesla has already approached the Portuguese Government and there have been talks in this direction," revealed a source at the Ministry of Economy. For more on the Tesla powerwall call 932 650 496, email: info@shs-pt.com or visit www.shs-tesla.com

M oura Beer Meet the couple who have launched a beer made from Carobs.

T

he innovative and charming couple Sebastião Afonso and Ivânia Lourenço both from the Tavira area are the entrepreneurs behind “Moura”. Sebastiao and Ivania explained that the idea for a beer made solely from locally produced carobs came about back in 2003. They were interested in home brewing and craft beer and at the time it was a friend who had told them about such a course in Porto. After getting more information they completed professional courses. Producing a stout, pilsner and a Belgian style ruby beer, it has been such a great success that they are now trying to keep up with demand. They explained that the name was, of course a big decision and as well as using locally farmed products they also wanted to introduce a bit

www.simplyalgarvemag.com

of history and culture from the area and they selected Moura (a Moorish name) that comes from the legend from the beautiful castle in Tavira. The then governor of Tavira, Aben-Fabila cast a spell on his daughter to stay in the castle whilst he went to battle. He

kept her there so that she would be safe and he was to break the spell when he returned. Unfortunately, the brave Aben was never to return and it is said that the princess appears crying, at mid night, on St John’s day every year on the 24th June. Sebastiao and Ivania are in the process of establishing their very own micro brewery to enable them to increase production, broaden their range, and keep up with demand. A very exciting and impressive product, all grown and produced in the East Algarve. We wish them much continued success, it was a pleasure to meet them both. Soon their website will be updated and running, but for now you can contact them on: Sebastião Afonso 964 606 755 Ivânia Lourenço 962 653 969 cervejeirosmouros@hotmail.com Facebook cervejaartesanalmoura

CHARITY

Almancil International

A

ssociated Almancil International Rotary Club (AIRC), chartered in June 2006 was the first International Rotary Club in Portugal to use English as a common language. The first members comprised seven different nationalities of which some had been Rotarians in their home countries before moving to Portugal and some who had never before been members of Rotary. Each though had a common aim. Having only recently deciding to make Portugal their home, with the exception of a few Portuguese members, many were not at that time fluent Portuguese speakers. However, they each wanted to do something for their adopted country. Rotary International's stated purpose is "to bring together business and professional leaders in order to provide humanitarian services, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations, and to advance goodwill and peace around the world" It seemed, therefore, that an

18

English-speaking Rotary club was the perfect vehicle with which to help the local community. It wasn't long before the Club attracted more members so that very quickly there were twelve different nationalities. The first meetings were held at Restaurant Couleur France in Almancil. After moving to a few different venues, for the last 4 years the club has had a permanent home at The Conrad Hotel in Quinta do Lago where it meets for lunch every Wednesday with the exception of the first Wednesday in each month when it meets for dinner. The first fundraising event was a golf tournament and dinner with the specific aim of helping children in need in the Algarve. Since then the club has raised many thousands of euros for good causes. "We generally do not give money," said current President Hermes Alberto. "We receive specific requests from organisations which our Community Services Committee will consider and,

once approved, will purchase and donate the items requested. Organisations for which we have provided help in the way of equipment have included UNIR in Loulè, which supports and delivers day care facilities for adults with mental disabilities. We have recently made funds available for eight of the adults to receive dental treatment, which has been provided by AIRC member Patsy Delgatto at her surgery in Almancil. Patsy has been kind enough to augment our funds with her own so that treatment could be completed. Of course, dental treatment is an ongoing requirement so we need to continue to raise funds for this purpose. For many years the club has been associated with ASCA in Almancil, which provides valuable services to the local community. Amongst many other things, they provide day care and domiciliary services for the elderly, including meals, a library and laundry facilities and assistance to anyone in the community

Neighbours, community leaders, and global citizens uniting for the common good. With you, we can accomplish even more.

Rotary club

needing help and support. ASCA is one of the few exceptions where money is occasionally given, but it is always ringfenced for the purchase of specific items such as beds for the new residential wing for the elderly and currently, equipment for the proposed new crèche. The recent Christmas Market, held in conjunction with the Almancil Freguesia, raised more than 3,000 euros for the crèche. We think it important to support young people in a way that we hope will benefit the community in years to come. Each year we sponsor up to eight young students to attend summer camps throughout Europe where they experience different cultures and meet other young people. For these students it is a life-changing experience and, in many cases, they continue to maintain contact with the people they have met. The Club also participates in the Rotary Long-Term Youth Exchange Scheme. We are hosting Adrian Chang a 19-year-old student from Taiwan. Adrian is spending

www.simplyalgarvemag.com

a school year in the Algarve, living with two families during his stay. He attends Escola Secundaria de Loulé where he is studying Portuguese, maths, physics and science. In return, two students from Portugal are currently on longterm exchanges: 18-year-old Loredana Privilean from Quarteira who is staying with families in Ibbenbüren, Germany and 17-year-old Ionela Chiperi, also from Quarteira who is staying with families in Cagliari, Sardinia. Both students having been sponsored by Rotary Clubs in those countries. For the last 3 years AIRC, together with the Rotary Club of Silves has organised a cookery competition between students from schools across the Algarve with the generous help of Honorary Member and General Manager of the Conrad Hotel, Joachim Hartl and his kitchen team. The finals of the competition have been held at the Conrad under the supervision of the professional staff with the winning team being offered work experience at

the hotel. We are currently sponsoring a group of children with learning difficulties related to autism from Escola Dr António de Sousa Agostinho in Almancil for surfing lessons. The scheme, which started in September, is already proving beneficial to these youngsters by improving their coordination and their confidence. To help finance this project, a gala dinner was held to celebrate the club's 10th Anniversary which raised more than 8,000 euros. Our club now has 35 members including lady members. In 2014 we had our first lady President and next year we will have another. Our ambition is to grow the club year on year. We welcome visitors from Rotary clubs around the world and, of course, new members, especially if they are willing to share their expertise and experience and help with fund-raising. More details of AIRC can be found on www.rotartalmancil.org

CLOTHING

KHADI@

“If we have the Khadi Spirit in us, we would surround ourselves with

K

hadi is a term for hand-spun and handwoven cloth from India, Bangladesh and Pakistan. It is primarily woven from cotton but may also be woven in silk or wool. It is an organic, comfortable fabric, very versatile in that it is cool in summer and warm in winter, becoming a second skin after a few washes. The fabric got its importance from Mahatma Ghandi when he revived the 5000 year old process of hand weaving as part of his freedom fighting movement in the twenties. The Khadi movement, as it may be called, promoted an ideology, the idea that Indians could be selfreliant on cotton and be free from the high priced goods and clothes the British were then selling. This movement, aimed at boycotting foreign goods and promoting Indian ones, envisioned the improvement

20

of the country’s overall economy by following the principles of swadeshi - meaning self-sufficiency. Still today, the Government of India has been appealing to citizens to promote the usage of Khadi. In every city, you can find Khadi Government Shops where any Khadi producer has their sale guaranteed at just prices and where anyone can buy Khadi fabrics and garments with the assurance of following fair trade policies. All Khadi found in Kozii shops is bought directly from these government shops, contributing, in this way, to a social system that empowers the poor and therefore respecting its very own fair-trade and environmental brand consciousness. Luxury service for A

rcadia (from the Greek meaning a Pastoral Paradise) is a well established Villa Management Company and Luxury Villa Rental Company that has offered its clients and guests a premier bespoke service for over fifteen years. The team at Arcadia is headed by owners Chris and Lin O’Keefe whose dedicated staff offer the perfect solution to the combination of home management and luxury rentals either for holiday or long term rental for those who wish to experience Portugal for a season or to ‘try before they buy’ property here in the Algarve. They manage 40 high quality villas and offer a large and varied choice of luxury villas and apartments in Quinta do Lago, Vale do Lobo and surrounding areas for rental. Upon entering the offices of Arcadia there is more than a hint of Art Deco which could give the clue to Chris' background which was forged by working at sea with the Cunard and

22

Royal Mail passenger liners. This wealth of experience and knowledge of over 20 years helps the team provide a service which prides itself on giving the quality that working on such great liners such as the Aragon, Arlanza, Amazon, the Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth has engendered. In contrast, another aspect of the great liners which sailed to Brazil, Argentina and other countries in South America was third class travel, which carried many immigrants from the UK, France, Spain and Portugal all with hopes of a new life. Many of these original immigrants came from the Algarve and Alentejo regions, enabling Chris to begin building his rudimentary Spanish and Portuguese language skills. This for Chris also sparked what was to be a life-changing interest in the Iberian Peninsula and its peoples. It was, however, memories of family holidays spent in Portugal with its wonderful people, beaches and lifestyle, together with the fact that Seamus O’Keefe, Chris’ bother, was living

your property! here and raising his family that they decided to settle in Algarve. Arcadia, originally began with the help of Seamus’ company Iberian Construction, which has been involved in many projects in the luxury resorts of Quinta do Lago and Vale do Lobo, building high quality Villas. From these early days Chris and Lin started the Villa Management Company and later expanded into the Luxury Rental Company therefore offering the best of both worlds. Arcadia Villa Management is headed by Angelina who provides the services of weekly inspections and reports, financial statements, the control of garden, pool teams, and maid service while also keeping a close watch on all matters of security. Arcadia Luxury Villa Rental is headed by Carla who provides a quality bespoke service from the moment clients enquire and book their villa to the moment they arrive to their final

This can include private transport, home food packs, a full Concierge Service, spa services, chefs for those special occasions, private car hire or private transport for taking in all the local sightseeing and attractions. In fact, anything that you could wish for can be arranged for you! Chris and his team made us feel very welcome and it is clear that their reputation for high standards and quality service ensures that all their guests have an enjoyable and stress free holiday, many whom return year after year. Please call in at the office in Almancil for a coffee and an informal chat to discuss any of your requirements regarding property management or advice on the current Rental market. ADVERTISING

7 Benefits of local magazine advertising

T

Print is not dead, but rather a channel that offers true engagement with a targeted audience,

he only other topic that gets discussed as much as whether or not print is dead is whether or not Elvis is dead. We cannot vouch for the King’s status but we can vouch for the fact that print is very much alive and thriving. In some ways, print advertising is like a cockroach, only not as filthy or grosslooking. But, you know, when television came onto the scene, everyone cried aloud it would be the death of print. But it wasn’t. And then the Internet arrived and the children and grandchildren of Henny-Penny also said the sky was falling and print would be crushed and killed under its weight. But it wasn’t. And it doesn’t look like anything will ever really kill print (hence our disgusting comparison to the indestructible cockroach). Here’s a perfect example of print’s ability to always bounce back: Back in 2012, Newsweek pulled its print version, which certainly didn’t help stop the rumors that print was dead. But, low and behold, Newsweek’s new owners brought the print version of the iconic magazine back from the dead. The “catch,” if there was one, was that Newsweek would only be available to subscribers. Which is genius, really. In essence, Newsweek is now a niche magazine, targeted to a very specific market segment. In the same way, local magazines, which can be found all over the world, are also niche magazines, targeting a very specific population, namely, locals. Target a Dedicated Market Enthusiasts are always the most dedicated consumers and the best to market to. Besides people who are passionate about certain hobbies, most people are incredibly proud and passionate about where they live. Since

1

24

most humans have an incredible need to be part of a community, local magazines serve as an important hub where locals learn about their surroundings and events they might like to get involved in. In other words, as a local business, you will get your ad in front of a passionate crowd that is already interested in who you are and what you have to offer. Nothing Beats that Tactile Experience Sure, many consumers spend a ton of time online chronicling the latest minutiae of their daily lives on their Twitter accounts or uploading their newest selfie onto their Instagram accounts, but when it comes to engaging with websites, most readers only scan a website for 15 seconds before moving on. People interact much differently with printed magazines. There’s just something about that tactile experience. Magazine readers really take their time and linger when reading print. They also tend to fully interact with the content, including the ads inside. Your Ad Will Stand Out Who stands to sell more tacos and make more money: the taco truck parked downtown amidst a sea of food trucks, or the taco truck that is parked five miles outside of town on the side of the highway surrounded by nothing but hungry travelers? So many advertisers have fallen for the myth that print is dead. Many have migrated their marketing budgets online where they vie for consumer attention is a sea of other digital ads. This is great news because it means your local magazine ad has far less competition and will stand out from the crowd. People Don’t Fear Print Ads The Internet is full of cybercriminals who use viruses as an attempt to gain

2

3

4

access to consumer’s private information. Because of the proliferation of these malware viruses, web surfers have become very wary of clicking on banner ads, even if those ads are enticing. But consumers have nothing to fear by reading your print ad, and this makes them more open to receiving your message. A Longer Shelf Life While digital ads come and go, print ads have staying power. A magazine left in a doctor’s office will be read by countless patients for many months, and your ad can be seen by a majority of them. Brand Recognition When you advertise in a reputable local magazine, people instantly become familiar with your company. This recognition is then reinforced when they meet you in person, either at your place of business or at a local trade show or charity event. This not only builds brand recognition but, in time, brand loyalty. Credibility Local magazines are highly valued and respected publications that build a sense of community among local consumers. In fact, many people turn to local publications as a source of advice. Advertisers can greatly benefit from this credibility when their ads are viewed not as ads but as recommendations from a trusted source. We recommend you take a cue from the new owners of Newsweek who realised print is not dead, but rather a channel that offers true engagement with a targeted audience, and invest some of your marketing Euros into local magazine advertising. Ed: But then again we would say that, wouldn't we!

PROPERTY

Preparing your property for Sale Property advice from expert Paul Greenhalgh, Yellow Homes

H

istorically the period for selling property in the Algarve is underway. It is that time of year when many home owners make the decision to sell their properties and the time when we encourage our existing vendors to take a moment to look for ways to improve the presentation of their property. This is something we have written about before but it is such an important subject it is worth reiterating. First

impressions are crucial to anybody who is looking to buy a new home, that is why it is your job to ensure that your property is looking fresh and clean as opposed to dirty or untidy. You do not need to be a DIY expert or a top interior designer to make a real difference to your home. By simply taking the time to put a little effort into the presentation, you can vastly improve the perception of your property and beat the current competition in the market.

DE-CLUTTER This is such a simple task and yet makes a huge difference to your property. Potential buyers want to view spacious and tidy homes. Simply remove any unnecessary items out of view by storing them in cupboards or drawers or by having a proper clear out. It is important to hide the family photographs and other items which personalise your property. The potential buyer needs to imagine themselves living in the property and if it is littered full of personal objects such as family portraits, etc, then they will find it more difficult to do. In order to create a better ambience it would make more sense to hang a large mirror in the hallway than to be greeted by a 6 foot carved wooden giraffe purchased on your last trip to Kenya. FINISH ODD JOBS Taking time to repair a leaking tap in the kitchen, replace a broken terrace tile or paint the entrance gates are an example of some of the ways, as owners, you can improve the chance of selling your property. Even the easiest and inexpensive tasks such as replacing light bulbs will help in the presentation of a property. ELIMINATE SMELLS Bad smells and odours are the biggest turn off to any potential buyer. Certain smells such as cigarette smoke, pet food or mould can linger on fabrics and in the air and whilst you may have grown accustomed to them, your viewers will not. We live in a country with fantastic

www.simplyalgarvemag.com

weather so take advantage of this and open all windows and doors to air the property thoroughly before any viewing. Another way to beat those bad odours is by cleaning your rugs and curtains, putting fresh bedding on or even preparing a pot of coffee before the viewing takes place. CLEAN, CLEAN CLEAN This is the most important thing you can do to help sell your home. If your property is looking well lived in and unappealing, then an intense clean can make it appear far more attractive and inviting. Most potential buyers find it difficult to be impressed when they see dirt and grime in a property, so clean every surface until it shines and scrub those floor and

GOLF PROPERTIES - VILLAS - APARTMENTS -

terrace tiles until they gleam taking the opportunity to declutter as you go. AND FINALLY.. Please let us do our job. Remember it is always better if the vendor steps out of the property when the agent arrives with the potential buyer. Purchasers are rarely honest about a property in front of the owners and as agents we need them to be open with us so we can address and solve any issues that arise. Take the opportunity to take your dog for a deserved walk as, whilst it is adorable to most, some buyers do not want your excitable Labrador jumping up onto their clean blue Polo shirt. For further advice and individual assistance on how to make the best of your property to encourage a quicker sale please contact our helpful Yellowhomes Team on 289 TOWNHOUSES - PLOTS 301 294 to make an appointment. UPDATE

Josh

Meet the latest member of the Simply Algarve magazine team!

A

fter last month's article about Goldra, meeting and hearing the stories of all the dogs there, we decided to sponsor our own dog, Josh! Josh came to Goldra roughly 18 months ago after being found by the church at Vale Judeu by one of Goldra’s dog walkers. He fitted in quite well, sharing a kennel with 4 other dogs both male and female. Josh was a little bossy at times especially over food so he was castrated to try and calm him down. However, 8 months ago it was noticed that he had a lump in his mouth. It didn’t seem to bother him too much but Jan got it checked out by the vet. Josh had tests, x-rays and a biopsy which determined that it was a benign tumour but unfortunately it was growing in his jaw bone so it could not be removed. He has since been on medication and is coping with it well. He still loves his food and is bright and alert. He is only about 2.5 years old so this is a real sad story. We fell in love with ‘Josh’ on our visit to the ‘New Goldra Dog Sanctuary. Like many dogs at Goldra, they desperately need our help in providing sponsorship to help pay for medical expenses and very day costs. Josh is such a sweet dog, and has so much to give he will require medication every day but sponsorship will help with this, but if you feel you could give him a loving happy home for the time he remains with us, or any of the other dogs at Goldra that need that special care then please talk to the team at Goldra. “Help us re-write their stories with a happy ending..” If you can donate collars, leads, toys, harnesses, kennels, puppy pens, anything, then please do! Visit www.thegoldradogsanctuary.com for more.

Look no further - Sophie Goffart and her fully trained team at Presty are here to guide you forward to begin those difficult first steps to making the changes that will bring results. Sophie and her team are offering various options according to your objectives, the time you have available, your budget and your approach to your new regime. The Presty Approach has always been a non-invasive one, focusing on only natural processes (no injections, no surgery) therefore no side effects. Once you have decided to fully commit to your new regime your personal programme will be design specifically for you, by one of the Presty Team and together you will work toward your goals. Presty will guarantee positive results if you fully commit to the conditions of the p r o g r a m m e ! This is one of the unique points that make PRESTY standout from the rest! Just to give you a taste of the variety of programmes available Sophie Goffart, the owner and founder of Presty offers 3 very different approaches to get you started.

36

FITNESS - This is perfect for those who enjoy physical exercise and feel that this would be a logical place to begin. This will be personalised coached sport sessions using the latest technology in EMS (Electric Muscle Stimulation) The Miha Body-Tec Machine. This machine is used by professionals to intensify training and maximise muscular contraction. This leads to an increase in metabolism, subsequently burning fat. A 20 minute work-out is equal to 3 hours in the gym! – No more excuses! Also a great favourite of Usain Bolt!! For this method you will need 1-2 (max) sessions a week. After 4 or 5 sessions you will really start to feel the effects, more flexibility, strength and endurance. BODY-SHAPING – This is ideal for those who do not like sport as this gives you two avenues of body shaping. The use of Lipo-Light, an effective alternative to liposuction, which uses LED Therapy consisting of 16 plates, each plate incorporating 30 diodes, each placed around the body. LipoLight penetrates through the skin directly into the fat cells triggering the release of fatty acids and the shrinkage of fat cells. These fatty acids will be metabolized by the body’s natural functions. Therefore, this therapy works in perfect conjunction with second element to this approach ‘SismoFirst’ a machine which burns fat using a powerful 3D oscillation action allowing deep penetration of muscles leading to a significant mobilization of fat reserves and therefore fat storage. The speed and direction of oscillation is gentle on joints and assists in the elimination of cellulite and supports the natural process of drainage leading to efficient removal of toxins.

Furthermore if you choose a slimming package Presty will be happy to offer: A Magnetic Resonance Test in order to identify the level of vitamins, minerals etc. to gain the most from you new regime. A scan which will measure your BMI (Body Mass Index) TGC (Body Fat Rate) RTH (Hip Patio) and BMR (Basic Metbolic Rate). Sophie and her Team at Presty are there to help and encourage you to reach your goals. They understand that the first steps are the hardest. Their speciality is to enable you to create the body you can be proud of, the state of health you wish for through safe, fast, effective results using the latest technology to get you where you need to be. So ladies and gentlemen call Sophie, Rebeca or Gratiela and book now for that first session. I am sure you will not be disappointed! Call 289 391 203 Visit www.presty.pt or Email Info@presty.pt.

Sismo and Lipo-light used in combination give the best results. Each session lasts around 60 minutes. After 10 sessions you will see significant results, but if used in conjunction with a low calorie diet those results can be even better! BODY-SCULPTING – This is achieved through Cryotherapy, this in layman’s terms is the eliminating of fat cells through the freezing process. Enabling inches to be lost in one session! The effects are the reduction of fat cells, enhances lymphatic drainage, removal of localised cellulite, aids muscle toning and firming, last but not least giving the ability to body sculpt using this natural process. This can be used on the face, not just the body. Therefore problem areas such as double chin can be removed, wrinkles reduced, not to mention firming and toning of facial tissue. Just in case you are wondering, this is not painful at all! The effects are immediate and permanent even after the first session the effects can be seen. To make it even easier to help you get started Sophie will offer a 50 percent discount on all trial session!

FOOD

Naturally Delicious and Easy to Prepare By Marco Aleixo

Food made simple

nyone interested in getting to know gastronomic Portugal can simply travel from north to south with a spoon in his hand and try all the variations on rice pudding. It is of little interest to the Portuguese whether they invented this dish, or whether they adopted it from another culture long ago. For today, as far as the Portuguese are concerned, Portuguese rice pudding is the authentic dish and all others are fakes and copies. There are records of rice cooked in milk and sugar dating back to the sixth century BC. Once the use of molasses coloured the pudding a dark golden, but the introduction of refined sugar changed the hue to the creamy white we know today. By the 18th century recipes for rice pudding began to appear in cookbooks all across Europe. Often the recipes were titled “Portuguse Rice Pudding” or “Portuguese Style Pudding”, making rice pudding one of the oldest recipes in Europe. Throughout 26 centuries this simple recipe of rice cooked in milk with sugar has been preserved essentially intact. The popularity of this dessert in Portugal reflects its simple charms and the desire to keep alive a sweet ancestral tradition. Rice pudding was traditionally served at any event worthy of celebration and especially on festive days. Sweet rice features in many traditional Portuguese weddings, not only as a main dessert on the wedding day, but it is also typical for the family of the engaged to offer sweet rice to their guests a few days before the ceremony. There is no party or pilgrimage or marriage without sweet rice. Its history might be traced back to the Moors, who inhabited the territory before Portuguese independence in the 12th century, no one knows for certain. The simple ingredients include rice (that should always be Carolino rice), then milk, sugar, eggs, cinnamon, orange or lemon peel and finally orange blossom water (which sadly is not used often anymore). An enormous variety of recipes were created using these simple ingredients by simply varying the proportions of the ingredients.

38

Ingredients: • 8 servings • 1 litre of milk (I use whole fat milk) • 150 grams of Carolina rice (you can substitute Basmati) • Zest of one orange • 1 cinnamon stick • Pinch of seasalt • 100 grams of cooking cream • 1 egg yolk • 160 grams of refined white sugar

Preparation: • Put the rice, milk, orange zest, pinch of salt and cinnamon stick into a pot and stir moderately for 40 minutes at 90C. • After 40 minutes pour a little of the rice/ milk mixture into a small bowl, add the egg yolk and mix thoroughly. • Return the mixture to the pot. • Add 160 grams of sugar to the pudding in the pot and mix well. • Continue to stir the pudding for another 10 minutes at 90C. • After 10 minutes take the pudding off the heat and add the cooking cream. • Remove the cinnamon stick and your pudding is ready to serve.

An overview of brexit from Currencies direct

Keep up to date with our currency expert, Client Account Executive Chantelle Frater

T

his year has been a very busy and surprising one on the economic and politic scenes. Back in June, Brexit took place and Sterling has not recovered the highs of GBPEUR 1.40 since. No one knew what sudden impact Brexit would have on the exchange rates, such was the confidence that the UK would stay a part of the European Union. Since then, November has seen Donald Trump’s victory in the US, which impacted the currency markets, and affected the euro amongst other currencies. In regards to Brexit, uncertainty still lingers over markets; reliable information is thin on the ground, and with so much contradiction, it’s been nigh impossible for any establishment to forecast a market analysis that isn’t partial to remaining fairly vague. It looks like we’ll be sitting on our hands until March 2017, when Article 50 is (supposedly) finally going to be triggered in order for Britain to leave the EU in March 2019, immediately ahead of the next European Parliament elections. For now,

the key focus has been hedging any potential further threat that lies within these plans for the future. The European Central Bank has also recently reviewed its Quantitative Easing programme, choosing to pump more money into the Eurozone economy until the end of next year, and longer if needed while maintaining a steady and controlled approach by lessening the monthly amounts and extended the overall time-scale of the plan. 2017 should see its share of political and economic changes which are likely to impact the currency markets. If you require to make international money transfers, it is highly recommended that you speak to a currency specialist, to obtain expert guidance on the markets and services most adapted to your needs so you make the most of your money. IRS: Six dates you need to put in your diary for 2017 Keep up to date with our Finance expert, chartered accountant Ricardo Chaves from All Finance Matters. 'If you do not deliver your IRS on time, or if you fail to meet some of the deadlines above you may lose some or all your tax deductions'.

T

his year, before you submit your IRS for the year 2016, you need to perform some tasks as per the new habits acquired in the previous year: validating invoices, registering them, and appending information are examples of procedures that have become part of the routine of any taxpayer. Your role is important in determining your IRS deductions, therefore check the tax calendar, to make sure you don’t lose any deduction or pay any fines. FEBRUARY 15 Each taxpayer has until the 15th of February to query, report and verify invoices. To do this you should access the E-Factura portal and access to your personal page, where you should verify if all your invoices have been properly communicated. If you find any failure, or any invoice is not recorded, you can add these invoices to your file. It’s also important to check in which category your invoices are recorder. Please note that it’s necessary to move your invoices into the appropriate section (ie health, education, etc)

otherwise the deduction will not be accepeted. These procedures need to be performed for each household expenditure holder, including dependants. MARCH 15 Between the 1st and 15th of March, you need to check your page and if you feel the information is not correct, you can contest the calculations made by the Tax Authorities. In other words, your tax deductions will be summarized here, under family general expenses, healthcare expenses, training and education expenses, charges with property for permanent residence, invoices VAT and costs with foster homes; if your total invoices is not consistent with the one totals shown in the portal, you have this two weeks window to contest it. Please note that it’s necessary to check this for each holder. FROM APRIL 1 TO MAY 31ST Contrary to what happened in previous years, when there were different deadlines for taxpayers to hand over the tax declaration, from 2017 there is only one deadline to submit the tax return. Between 1st of April and 31st of May, all declarations have to be submitted irrespective of your income category (employment income, pension income, self-employment income, rentals, etc. JULY 31ST If you have tax to receive, the settlement must be made by 31st of July. This is the deadline for the Tax Authorities to refund you. AUGUST, 31ST If however you have to pay tax, you should make the payment no later than the last day of August, providing you have delivered the tax return within the time limits. If the tax returns was submitted after the deadline, payment may be made until 31st of December (fines and interest will apply). Last but not least, please remember that if you do not deliver your IRS on time, or if you fail to meet some of the deadlines above you may lose some or all your tax deductions. Late delivery of your IRS may also cancel your IMI (Council Tax) exemption. There are many other alterations that may affect your IRS and it may come as a surprise that filing a correct tax return in Portugal can save you money. Submitting a tax declaration does not necessarily mean that you pay tax, but may avoid you paying fines for non-compliance and offer you peace of mind. If you have any other questions, please feel free to contact us; tax planning is critical and you and your company, cannot afford surprises. Pass by our office to discuss your personal situation and avoid any late submission fines.

GARDENS

The Almond tree All you need to know about this beautiful and surprising tree!

44

www.simplyalgarvemag.com

A

lmonds are members of the Rosaceae (rose) family, along with many other tree fruits such as peaches, apples, pears, plums, cherries, and apricots. Within the genus Prunus, almond is most closely related to the peach, and the two crops share the subgenus Amygdalus. Almond and related species are native to the Mediterranean climate region of the Middle East (Pakistan eastward to Syria and Turkey). The almond and its close relative, the peach, probably evolved from the same ancestral species in southcentral Asia. Almonds were domesticated at least by 3000 BC, and perhaps much earlier since wild almonds have been unearthed in Greek archeological sites dating to 8000 BC. The almond was spread along the shores of the Mediterranean in northern Africa and southern Europe by Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans. It was brought to California in the 1700s by Spanish Padres who settled the Mission at Santa Barbara. Around the turn of the century, the industry started in California, due to development of superior cultivars in the late 1800s. Tariffs on almond imports were levied to protect the industry. From then until about 1960, the industry grew at a moderate pace, but acreage and production have increased several-fold since then, making

www.simplyalgarvemag.com

California the clear world leader in almond production. In 2002, there were over 500,000 acres of almonds in California, making it the most widely planted tree crop in the state. Almonds are commonly mistake for a variety of nut, but the almond is actually the seed of a fruit of an almond tree, which is part of the same family of the peach tree. The fruit of the almond even looks like a peach, which eventually splits and releases the seed, the almond. Following these guidelines will help you successfully grow an almond tree of your own. There are two types, bitter and sweet. Sweet almonds are cultivated as food; bitter almonds, which contain prussic acid, are grown mostly for their rootstocks on which sweet almonds are grafted. Almonds are raised for ornamental and nutritional reasons. Like nuts, almonds are high in vitamin B and protein. One cup of shelled almonds contains 26 grams of protein, 77 grams of fat, 28 grams of carbohydrates, 332 milligrams of calcium, and small amounts of vitamins B, and B2, iron, and niacin. The first consideration you need to make is your climate region. Almond trees need warm summers and cool winters, so we can grow almonds happily here, but if your garden sees some frost, you probably won't be able to grow an almond tree outdoors. Similarly, if your region is hot all year round, you

will probably not be successful and it's best to pick a different type of tree to grow. Almond trees are native to the Middle East, so any are around the same latitudinal region should grow fine. Having said this, almond trees can be grown with success indoors in these climates with proper planning and know how. Secondly, almond trees are not self-pollinating. If you want your tree to produce almonds, you have to have at least two trees of different varieties. Almond trees aren't especially tall, usually growing from 4 to 10 meters, so this isn't a major concern for growing outdoors, but this may rule out growing trees inside because two are required to produce almonds. Flowers bloom in the Autumn, and in December pollen grains appear, and by January the buds grow very rapidly. This is the reason almond trees cannot grow in regions that have snow or frost, but they still need a cool winter to activate growth of the buds and pollen. The best time to plant almond trees is January to February, because the colder temperature stops leaf buds from appearing and keeps the growth focus on the roots which is extremely important in the early stages of growth. Almonds need to be grown in areas that receive full sunlight. Once you've found a suitable spot, the tree should be planted in a hole deep enough so that the roots are not bent or

46

crowded together. Young almonds trees often struggle with heavy winds because they grow rapidly when new, so it's strongly suggested that you brace the tree. Simply place a shaft of wood or pipe in the ground next to your tree and tie it to the brace. This gives the tree support against winds so it grows straight and sturdy. Once your almond tree is grown, it's a good habit to prune your tree to maintain it. Pruning simply involves cutting off dead or dying branches at the base of the trunk. You can also thin out any parts of the tree that are beginning to look overcrowded. The best time to prune is in late winter before buds and new growth appears in the tree. Following these guidelines should keep your almond trees fertile and hearty for years to come. The almond requires a sandy, well-drained soil, neutral or tending slightly to the alkaline. Since good drainage is essential, plenty of humus should be present to hold moisture while permitting excess water to drain away. The hole where the tree is going should be just large enough to receive the roots without bending or crowding them. If a soil auger is used, it should be 24-inches in diameter and the sides of the hole should be broken down to eliminate the auger's glazing effect. Compost or manure should never be placed at the bottom of the hole. It can create problems for

the tree. The roots of the tree run deep. It is advisable to break up the topsoil thoroughly and to as great a depth as possible before planting and then fertilize with plenty of organic matter. Many commercial growers plant cover crops which are then turned under for green manure, protecting the ground and enriching the soil. This practice should not be necessary on the small homestead where only a few trees are planted. Compost should be worked in late in the autumn. Place straw mulch under the tree but not close to the trunk. Almond trees begin to bear in three or four years and should be in full production in 12 years. Nuts should be harvested when those in the centre of the tree are ripe. Nuts which fall to the ground before the regular harvest time should be cleaned up daily to prevent disease. After harvesting, shell and dry the nuts. The kernels should be spread for drying in a shady location until the meat is crisp. Kernels can be stored in airtight jars and kept in cool places. According to this delightful story, during the time when Al

Garb still belonged to the Moors, there reigned a young Caliph in Silves called Ibn-Almundim, who fell in love and married Gilda, the daughter of a great lord from the North, who had been defeated in battle by the Moorish king. Their love was mutual, and the marriage was celebrated in grand style. However, the beautiful princess grew sadder day by day, with the Caliph unable to make her smile. They consulted magicians and wise men from all over the world, but none could find a cure for her sadness‌ Until one day when an old Nordic man told the king that Gilda was longing for the white snow-covered fields of her homeland. Ibn-Almundim then ordered thousands of almond trees to be planted outside the windows of the palace, which, when they were in blossom, covered the land with white petals. The illusion took away her longing and she became joyful once more. And this is why, since that spring so long ago, the Algarve relives each year the magic of the almond blossom. Mark O'shaughnessy

GOLF

Practice with a purpose This months tip from Monte Rei golf club.

A

re you fed up with trying to imitate the pros, buying the latest expensive equipment and seeing your handicap stay the same? Studies show between 60 percent and 65 percent of all golf shots occur inside 100 yards of the hole and are more important for scoring. The following drill will improve your feel around the greens, reduce the number of shots inside 100 yards of the hole and lower your scores. Lay two clubs on the ground one metre apart creating a landing area in direct line between you and the pin. Try to land the ball into the area created towards the hole on the green, varying the landing area for different clubs. Take note of the balls trajectory and reaction when it hits the green as to how far it rolls. Before the shot try to imagine the flight of the ball, the distance it will

48

travel when it lands on the green and with the use of practice swings try to feel the shot. This drill aids understanding of ball flight and spin with different clubs; it will improve your overall accuracy around the greens, leaving shorter putts and turning potential bogeys into pars. To play the shot consistently, put the ball slightly back of stance, weight is slightly in the front foot, club face pointing towards the target, feet and shoulders slightly open of the target, swing across your shoulder line with a short accelerating stroke brushing the grass with the club, nipping the ball off the surface not allowing the club head to pass your hands on the follow through. Sports News FOURTH BALLON D’OR FOR RONALDO

C

ristiano Ronaldo has never been shy of showing off his many trophies and his latest accolade has taken pride of place at his museum on his home island of Madeira. In July last year (2016) a new museum, quadruple the size of the original, was opened. The new museum space contains some of Ronaldo’s greatest prizes including Champions League, La Liga and Premier League medals as well as shirts, boots and personal possessions. Ronaldo has placed the golden ball in pride of place on a special pedestal in the museum, and shared a picture of the display via Instagram. Ronaldo was chosen by Ballon D'Or organisers France Football as this year's winner of the prestigious prize for the best European-based player ahead of great rival Lionel Messi in second and Antoine Griezmann in third.

The latest local sports news brought to you by Chris Wright PORTIMONENSE PRESS ON

lthough Portimonense suffered their first defeat of the season at second place CD Aves, they continue to remain on course for automatic promotion. Further good news for the Portimão based club is that Fabrício, currently on-loan at Kashima Antlers (Japan), is attracting interest from several top flight clubs. Any transfer would yield 20 percent for Portimonense who also have clubs watching Jorge Pires, the Segunda Liga top scorer with thirteen goals in eighteen games. Down the coast Olhanense continue to make strides to avoid the drop as new coach Bruno Baltazar remained undefeated as the team clocked up three wins and three draws to close in on Leixões and Freamunde.

LEAGUE CUP FINAL

T

he first-ever live trial with Video Assistant Referees (VARs) took place recently at the FIFA Club World Cup in Japan. VARs are trained to conduct checks throughout matches to see if a potential clear error has been made in a game-changing situation or if a serious offence has been missed with twenty-three camera angles to assist referees. The trial of VARs will also take place at the Algarve Stadium, Faro at the end of January at the Portugal League Cup semi-finals and final. The semi-finals will take place on the 25th and 26th January with the TAÇA CTT Final scheduled for the 29th January. With Phase 3 of the competition being played in early January there is a distinct possibility that holders Benfica as well as FC Porto, Sporting Lisbon and SC Braga could be in contention for a place in the semis.

AUCTION

Don’t worry, one sneeze and you’ve bought a priceless Monet. Those days are over!

Y

A beginners guide to auctions!

ou certainly don’t need to be a millionaire to buy at Auctions these days. They are a great place to find that unique item of furniture you have been dreaming of owning, a piece of artwork that comes with a history attached or a special gift for someone. Auctions are fun and easy to do. HOW TO GET STARTED. Pretty much all Auction Houses will advertise their catalogues in advance so that you can browse items on line from the comfort of your own home and will also have Open Days, just ahead of the Auction itself, where the items can be viewed (and sometimes handled – with care!). Be sure to register interest with the Auction House by adding yourself to their subscribers list. Take advantage of the viewing days if you can – often there are little gems that no photo in a catalogue can do justice to – and nothing beats seeing items for yourself. There may be just the thing you were after buried in amongst a collection – always worth a look. You will be able to ask questions about whatever you are interested in and decide how much you are prepared to pay for it. Any decent Auctioneer will be able to guide you as to anticipated sale price – although of course, that’s the fun of an Auction – things are only worth what someone is prepared to pay for it on the day! Items may have a reserve price and again you can clarify this in advance of the day. Do your research and

50

then you will feel more prepared for the Auction day itself. We have heard so many times “I would have bid on that had I realised just how nice it was!” BIDDING AT AUCTION. There are several ways you can bid at Auction. The most obvious, and undoubtedly the most fun, is to be there in person. You will need to register on arrival to be sure to have your unique bidding number and then take a seat and enjoy the theatre! Alternative ways to bid are by telephone or on line, where you can follow the Auction live. Again you will have to register your intent with the Auction House so that they are ready and prepared for your bid. Of course, there are additional fees (such as buyer’s premium and tax) to pay over and above the hammer price and these will be clearly explained to you on registration. Try very hard to set yourself a maximum price – and stick to it – or you may be a little shocked at the end of the day! Here at Auction House Algarve we are always happy to help you if you are new to the world of Auctions. Why not pop along to the next General Auction we are holding on Saturday January 7 at 10am and watch us in action or check out our web site at ahalgarve.com? Just a word of warning though – Auctions can be addictive – but that’s fine by us – we’d look forward to seeing you every month! Contact on 289 832 380 or email info@ahalgarve.com
