...to the July issue. We hope you are all finally enjoying the sunshine, as I am sure you all have friends and relatives visiting you, wishing to soak up the sun. This month we met up with Jilly and George Shearwood to find out more about their interesting lives here in the Algarve, with George’s trips which include a ‘safari’ trip, and Jillys involvement with the ladies’ lunch club and child mentoring. We also have a fantastic recipe from CIG restaurant, and feature the dedicated team from the East Algarve Property management. We hope you find time to relax and enjoy this issue and, if you have any comments or questions, they will be gratefully received. Dear East Algarve Magazine I wanted to share some information about what you could do with the abundance of figs available at the moment. The obvious answer is just to eat them naturally for breakfast, lunch and dinner as they are a delight. When you are tired of this, the next option is jam, which involves boiling the figs in water with lemon juice, sugar etc. A favourite of mine is a lovely summer salad made using fresh figs, parma ham, mozzarella cheese with honey and cherry tomatoes. Alternatively make stuffed figs, using whole figs with stems, goat’s cheese and parma ham, or go for the sweet option of fig pudding. After all this experimenting, you may be a little fed up of eating figs, so the next option is to dry them. This can be done by picking the ripened figs and washing and drying them. They must then be cut in half and left skin side down in the sun for a few days, but brought in at night, and covered with a cheesecloth, to prevent bugs eating them. Figs can also be dried in the oven, but on a very low heat, to avoid them cooking. Once dried, the figs should be placed in the freezer for four days to kill bacteria and can remain there for five years. They can also be kept in the fridge for up to two years! So get picking everybody and let nature nurture you for the next five years!

Dear Jan Further to your letter in the May issue about schools, I can tell you that our children have attended school here in Portugal with no problems at all. They did not speak the language but picked it up with ease and have made so many friends. The teachers have all been very supportive and understanding. I would definitely recommend sending the children to state schools instead of International schools, depending on your circumstances, if you plan to live in Portugal permanently etc. The paperwork is a bit of a headache as always, you need health cards, a letter from their previous school to state that they passed the year and in some cases a fiscal number. The best thing to do is visit the school as soon as you can. Best wishes Keely Harvey, Moncarapacho Dear frustrated Peter, Yes, it is true that we have another year to sort out the bore hole declarations etc, that is until they move the goal posts again! Good luck! Jenny, Olhao Dear East Algarve team, I want to tell you that I found June’s edition the best yet and I particularly loved the focus on Tavira. I have discovered new places to visit and gained a lot of new information about the Algarve and its history, I look forward to July and wish you continued success.

The Castro Marim International school will open in September. The school is situated in São Bartolomeu do Sol, equidistant from Faro and Huelva. The International school is a private and public venture, offering a bilingual, international curriculum for pupils aged between three and eleven. The principal subjects will be taught in English and other subjects in Portuguese. Spanish is taught as a foreign language. They provide a good pupil to teacher ratio (small classes up to fifteen pupils), and a school uniform to give pupils a sense of belonging and an identity with the school. For more information go online to:- http://en.eicastromarim.com
Royal Visit to Algarve Prince Edward was in the region last weekend. He attended the Duke of Edinburgh Cup charity golf event in Vilamoura. He also visited the International school in Almancil to see a demonstration of the activities which the school are involved in, under the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme.

Take a while to tile!
They are cool underfoot in the summer and easy to keep clean, but also hygienic. Rugs can be used to soften the effect in the cooler months. There are many types of tiles to choose from, including natural stone tiles like slate, terracotta or marble, and ceramic tiles which are more practical and usually cheaper. When choosing which tile to buy, think about its function. For example, is it suitable for a bathroom or will it become slippery when wet, and is it strong enough to withstand the hot climate? Wall tiles should be thinner than floor tiles. Natural stone like marble will provide more grip for a wet room, and does not show water marks, unlike polished tiles. Don’t be tempted to go for a trendy tile as it could soon become dated. A neutral, light coloured tile, provides a practical base to decorate around and will create a light, airy feel to a room. Don’t be scared to ask for samples to take home, and make sure you test them for ease of cleaning. Bear in mind the size of the tile, the bigger the tile, the quicker the job. Larger tiles also make a space feel bigger, but beware of using a large tile in a small space, as it may result in many cuts and not look very professional. Finally, when choosing your tile, think about the grout you will use, light colours can often become dirty quickly, whereas using dark grout on a light tile will define the grid pattern immensely. If laying the tiles yourself, make sure you get plenty of advice on choosing the right adhesive for your requirements, and do your research to achieve a flat professional finish, which will last you for many years.
Due to the hot climate we live in, tiles are the obvious choice when thinking about floor coverings.

A ngela and Valter Mendes are a very driven couple. Valter is an Optometrist and has his own shop and clinic in Almancil, while Angela has an English Master’s Degree and is the driving force behind East Algarve Property Management. She previously worked for TUI / Thomson UK for 8 years, then started Golden Services in Almancil. When they heard through a friend that a small property management and rentals company was up for sale, after some investigating they realised that the East Algarve was a great investment and bought the company.
How did East Algarve Property management come about? The company was originally set up in 2003 and bought by us at the end of 2007.

What makes you stand out from the rest? Being based for so many years in Almancil, and working with clients that own five star properties in Vale do Lobo and Quinta do lago, we are used to presenting a profes sional and high quality service, so with East Algarve we have brought our way of working to this end of the Algarve, where clients are not used to receiving such personal Goldencare. Services are not only a Man agement/Rental company, but a company that provides other ser vices such as, organising events, birthdays, weddings and wedding anniversary parties, theme nights, security at private functions, flight bookings, airport service, golf, su pervising and control of building works, Portuguese, Spanish, Italian, French lessons, document transla tions, red tape, health assistance, insurance, baby-sitting, children’s parties and activities etc. All of this enables us to provide a more complete and different type of service that which clients usual ly receive from other management companies. What are your future goals? To continue working the same way we have worked until today, not only for our clients, but together with them as a big family of differ ent Alwaysnationalities.respecting them and look ing after their Portuguese homes with care and consideration. Making sure that wherever they are, they can be confident that their homes and affairs are being well cared for.

Even if one is found today it will have to pass several years of trials before it becomes generally available, so for the timebeing, changing eating habits is the only way forward. Strange though it may seem, some times people become overweight from eating too little. Remember, your engine needs feeding to keep it turning over at maximum capac ity – if you eat too little, or only eat once a day, your body goes into protective starvation mode and reduces your metabolism and con sequently the speed at which you burn calories.

irst and foremost do NOT go on a diet. A diet suggests a start and a finish when what you really need to do is look at making small long term chang es. Of course you can try every diet that is advertised and promis es fantastic results... but how long can you keep to this diet? There are many ‘’wonder’’ drugs advertised, but many are little more than fillers or placebos. The effective ones, such as amphetamine derivatives, can be very dangerous.
• Don’t be too liberal with the but ter. Margarines, including low cho
Continuing from last month, in this issue we will look at long term solutions for people who fall in the obese range.
SECOND STEP Keep a diary of what you eat for at least 4 days, don’t change your pattern, and don’t lie to yourself by missing things off. You will never make any progress unless you are honest with yourself and usually it’s not as bad as you think.
THIRD STEP Now to the type of food you eat. There are simple changes you can make which have a big impact on calorie intake over time:
F
• Then look at when you eat – is it spread fairly evenly through the day? Do you skip breakfast or lunch? Are you a snacker? Breakfast gets the metabolism going, so burning off the calories. Many people say they feel hungry much sooner if they eat breakfast, but that is good, because it shows the body is working at capacity. Having got things moving don’t make the mistake of skipping lunch because then the metabolism will slow again.
• Use semi skimmed milk instead of full cream. You can use fully skimmed milk but remember, if you cut out too much fat you will feel hungry sooner, as fat is digested slowly and consequently you feel satisfied for longer.
To slim or not to slim
FIRST STEP Make the decision - if you are not prepared to make even small changes then you may as well stop here... But do remember, losing weight doesn’t have to be torture and you may even enjoy it!
• If you eat late in the evening then try to be moderate in what you eat and, other than special occasions, keep the sweets to earlier in the day. Try to move around a little af ter you have eaten as this aids di gestion, but don’t go in for heavy exertion after a big meal. Metabo lism is always slower at night.
• Try to use fresh food rather than tinned and pre packaged as many of these are high in sugar and salt.
•absorbed.Sweetsmade from refined sugar will give a surge in blood sugar, but the blood sugar drops just as quickly, making you feel hungry. Chocolate is less damaging because it contains some fat which slows the absorption. However, it is higher in calories so don’t overdo it. If you are a chocoholic then buy the mini bars and don’t have more than 3 a day.
• Some people find that chewing gum when cooking helps... It’s all too easy to keep tasting what you’re preparing and it’s surprising how those extra calories mount up. However, don’t chew gum to reduce appetite, it can make you want food more.
FOURTH STEP Everyone’s eating pattern is different, which is why standard diets don’t work. Habits are difficult to change and, to be successful, make only small changes. Eat at least three times a day and ensure you eat enough that you don’t feel hungry, and you could manage a tiny bit more. If you struggle with only eating 3 meals a day then have 2 or 3 small snacks in-between. Plan to have your snacks and plan to eat some chocolate if you really like it. You will find you eat less this way. Don’t rush your meals. The body needs time to register that it has been fed, otherwise you’ll eat more than you need. Start trying to listen to your body, not sight, smell or emotion. It is very good at telling you when you need to eat and when you are full.
• Whatever you do, don’t feel guilty about eating something you enjoy. Eating is for health but it is also for pleasure.•Aseveryone’s eating pattern is different there will be no diet plan on this page. However if anyone would like to email their food diary to me I will advise on possible changes and print some examples in the next issue (anonymously of course). I can only help if you are totally honest and you may be pleasantly surprised at the result... you may even find yourself eating more. Margaret Hooley email: margarethooley@live.co.uk

A s I write this, July is still a week away, but it’s already so hot it feels more like August than June. I’m grateful to have an indoor job and an air-conditioner I can turn on periodically to take the heat off. This type of climate affords plenty of down time and a good opportunity to get in some reading. No review this month, if that’s okay; just a simple list (with a note here and there), some suggestions on books you might like: 1“Outlander”, by Diana Gabaldon (book 1, of six, in the Outlander series) 2 “Nothing to Lose”, Lee Child’s latest Jack Reacher novel to be published in paperback 3 “Fear of the Devil”, by Peter Robinson, a C.I. Banks novel 4 “Twenty Wishes”, by Debbie Macomber (something light and easy and nice) 5 “The World According to Bertie” (44 Scotland Street), Alexander McCall Smith 6 “The Miracle at Speedy Motors” (No. 9, The No. 1 Ladies...), also Alex. McCall Smith 7 “A World to Rebuild”, austerity Britain 1945-1948, by David Kynaston (very good) NF 8 “Brasso, Blanco & Bull”, army life in the 1950’s, by Tony Thorne NF 9 Great Journeys series by Penguin, by Herodotus, Wm. Dampier, Isabella Bird, et al... ...and to finish off with something a little bit different, something you can dip in and out of when you need a short break from the chores, or the company, or the heat, and you don’t want to keep starting and stopping the same story, forgetting where you were and spending half of your allotted break time recapping, here are some suggestions of short story collections...they allow you to read an entire story in as little as half an hour and then you’re ready for the next thing... 10 “Welcome to the Monkey House”, Kurt Vonnegut (funny and weird, a lot of them), “A Progress of Love”, by the wonderful Canadian writer Alice Munro, and “Tales of Mystery and Imagination” by Edgar Allan Poe, who, by the way, is 200 this year. Don’t forget the annual Tavira Book Fair is this month, 17 July through to 2 August. Have a good month. Liz Beaupied, A Lura dos Livros, Tavira

For four days and four nights filled with mystery, Castro Marim is like a page clipped from a history book. In an environment totally adapted to the Medieval Age, visitors travel in a time machine to a place where kings and queens, nobles and monks, fearless knights and monsters, taverns, theatre and music spectacles are some of the attractions of this unforgettable cultural and gastronomic programme. If that doesn’t capture your imagination, nothing will. It is an extract from the website www.cm-castromarim.pt which is the Municipal Summer Guide, and we recommend that you read their superb Castroagenda.Marim is a pretty little town located in the extreme eastern Algarve on the Spanish border, (the Guadiana river, is just 2 kilometers to the east) which accounts for its rich history. It is locally known as Castelo de Castro Marim and is situated between two hilltops, each topped by a robust fortification; Castro Marim Castle and Fort São TheSebastião.remains of the first settlements in the area appear to date from the Neolithic period (approximately 5000 years BC) continuing through the bronze and iron ages, and can be found predominantly on the hill where the castle now stands. According to geological research, Castro Marim was closer to the sea than it is now, and consisted of an island surrounded by shallow waters For thousands of years it was a port that offered shelter to the ships that sailed up the Guadiana River to collect the metals mined to the north in Alcoutim and Mértola. In addition to the river routes on which Castro Marim’s prosperity was founded, the town was also connected to Lisbon by a Roman road that ran parallel to the Guadiana River and passed through Alcoutim, Mértola and ThereBeja.isdocumentary evidence of the Phoenician and Roman presence in the area of the town which, during the time of the Moorish oc-

cupation of the Algarve, possessed a defensive structure that was originally the core of the present castle. It is believed that Castro Marim Castle was built by the Moors to protect the Portuguese coast, but the village was already an important port during Phoenician and Roman times. The Romans called it Baesuris. In 1242, during the reign of King Alfonso III, the castle Don Paio Peres Correia took the castle from the Moors and rebuilt and reinforced it, with new battlements around the hilltop, to protect its strategic position against attacks from the east. This created a castle within a castle situation. The inner castle became known as ‘Cacela Velha’ or the ‘Old Castle’. In 1319 King Dinis ordered further reinforcement of the castle’s fortifications and made Castro Marim Castle the headquarters of the Order of Christ, a league of Knights created to replace the Templar Order. Further restorations were undertaken by King Fernando and King InManuel.1641 King João IV ordered the construction of Fort São Sebastião on the Southern hilltop and Castro Marim Castle was again restored and the two bulwarks were connected with walls that also enclosed the village between them. Nowadays both bulwarks lie in ruins and the connecting walls have largely Thedisappeared.maingate of the castle still bears an interesting design in relief, in the shape of a key, and marks, typical of medieval stone masons. The ramparts enclose the former Misericórdia, which has a Renaissance porch, and inside, two 17th century tombs, and the ruins of buildings destroyed by the earthquake of 1755. These include the main church (14th century), which was dedicated to Santiago (St. James), and the Alcaide’s Palace. The castle affords an unrivalled view of the Guadiana river, the town and its salt pans, as well as the surrounding hills and, stretching away on the horizon, the sea. The area around the town is now a nature reserve; the Reseva Natural do TheSapal.town itself is little more than a village, but there are several pleasant eating houses and a number of traditional bars. From Castro Marim Castle you see the sea on one side, and on the other, the rounded shapes of hills stretching away to the horizon. These are the uplands of the interior and they issue a silent challenge to anyone who feels at home in wide, open spaces, who takes pleasure in bird watching or who likes to walk or cycle, appreciating the bounty of the natural world. The roads that lead into the hills are punctuated by tiny hamlets of low white houses, surrounded by fields of crops, the cool expanse of the lakes formed by the Beliche and Odeleite dams,

By tradition, Nossa Senhora dos Mártires, the patron saint of Castro Marim is honoured on the 15th of August and, for a couple of days, Castro Marim celebrates with a varied programme which includes a procession and musical and sportive spectacles.

and the silhouettes of ancient windmills perched on the hill tops. Then there is the Guadiana river, winding its way through the empty spaces of the hinterland, on whose banks stands the picturesque village of Almada de Ouro, which takes its name from the gold that was once mined there. Situated amidst hills, with a murmuring river for company, Odeleite is a tiny oasis of greenary in a landscape dominated by the dusty browns of the local schist. Within the white walls of its church are some fine statues dating from the 16th and 17th centuries.
Visiting the City of Castro Marim Historical Centre - Linking the church, the castle and the fort, the streets of Castro Marim are lined with houses whose simplicity is typical of the architecture of the Algarve. White predominates, broken here and there by ochre and luminous blues. The bright borders painted on the facades are evidence of a taste for geometrical patterns and floral motifs. Main Church - The building dates from the 18th and 19th centuries and was originally a hermitage. The church suffered considerable damage in a fire in 1960. The church’s most striking feature is its elegant bell tower, surmounted by a false clerestory. The main and side chapels are worth a visit for the statues of the archangel Gabrial (16th century) which retain traces of polychrome decoration, Nossa Senhora da Encarnação e dos Mártires (Our Lady of the Incarnation and of the Martyrs) and a finely proportioned Santa MisericórdiaLuzia. (Mercy) Church - and although unimpressive from the outside, houses a main altar with seven wooden panels dating from the 17th century, and a collection of 18th century statues. Salt Marsh Natural Reserve Covering an area of 2,089 hectares, with wet areas of salt marsh, salt pans and creeks and dry areas of schist soils, red clay, arenite and sand, the reserve contains a wide variety of biotopes. It therefore offers a unique opportunity to observe the different ways in which plants and animals adapt to the natural environment. For most visitors, the reserve’s biggest attraction is undoubtedly the large number of birds - especially aquatic birds - that can be seen there. There are 153 species to spot, including storks, avocets, sand pipers, mallards and the ever popular flamingos. Because the reserve is a permanent home to some species, a seasonal refuge for others and a migratory stopping off point for yet others, it offers ornithologists a constantly changing year round panoply of sights and sounds. The great richness of its flora - 439 plant species in all - makes the reserve a paradise for those interested in botany. Its abundant natural wealth also includes 34 species of mollusc, 10 species of fish, 13 reptile species, 11 amphibians, 6 species of crustacean and 13 mammals. A visit to the reserve is an opportunity to gain an appreciation, in just a few hours, of the complex world of wildlife. A visitors’ centre at Cerro da Rocha provides documentation and guides to itineraries.

Power companies are burning more trees because renewable fuel can be cheaper than coal, and may be ignited without needing permits to release carbon dioxide, the main greenhouse gas blamed for global warming. June 2 (Bloomberg) Let’s think about this for a minute! We don’t want an increase in Carbon Dioxide, so we ban the use of coal. Instead of coal, we allow them to burn wood. Excuse me, but don’t the trees, that we cut down to burn, absorb carbon dioxide? End result – more carbon dioxide, but it doesn’t stop there. Guess what happens to the price of paper as forests are cut down for Thefuel?foolish thing is that they claim “European Union rules don’t require carbon-dioxide permits because the trees absorbed a like amount of the gas before harvest, making them carbon-neutral”. I guess the coal didn’t trap millions of tons of carbon dioxide when the trees that formed them turned to coal. The same unintended consequences occurred when the USA decided to use corn based bio-fuel (ethanol). The cost of corn rocketed, and live-stock farmers went bust. Even the cost of human foodstuffs increased. The rise in the price of Mexican Corn Tortillas caused riots. Wood is becoming a hot commodity in a new low-carbon world. Vattenfall AB of Sweden, Germany’s RWE AG and American Electric Power Inc. of Ohio, the biggest coal-burner in the U.S., have switched a few plants over to wood and more are planned. So far that hasn’t driven up paper prices or strained forests, which absorb carbon dioxide in photosynthesis. “Wood is very quickly becoming a very important part of the energy mix and in a few years will be a global commodity much like oil,” said Heinrich Unland, chief executive officer of Novus Energy GmbH. The German company runs a wood-power plant north of Hamburg that supplies heat to a Total SA refinery. Using biomass for power and heat — mainly from poplar, willow and pine trees — grew by 25 percent during the past two decades, according to the International Energy Agency, the Paris-based adviser to 28 oil-consuming nations such as the U.S. Industrialized nations drew 4 percent of their energy from biomass in 2006, the most recent data available from the IEA. That was the equivalent of about 1.1 billion barrels of oil. you credit it?

Robert Bijker has his finger on the pulse of the property market. This month he tells of how buyers are slowly returning to the market.
Investors’ risk appetite recovered in 2009 from being extremely risk averse - as evidenced by the recovery of equity markets and sell off in the US bond market (the yield on 10 year US treasuries moved up from a recent low of 2 % to over 4% in less than 4 months) –and as a result prospective buyers of real estate are becoming more confident too and are returning to the Algarve. However, there is still an imbalance between supply and demand, with supply outstripping demand. We are in a buyer’s market and this will continue for some time to come. The last two quarters saw a pick up of demand for property, although it is coming from a low base and is nowhere near the levels of demand seen in the year 2006 and 2007. What is encouraging though, is that an increasing number of buyers are returning and are met by eager sellers. It feels like the early signs of us reaching the lowest point in the market.

W ith prospective buyers reluctant to commit themselves to purchasing a property in the midst of a declining market, and sellers not willing to lower prices fast enough, last year’s deal flow slowed to a trickle by the end of 2008. As a result, many real estate agencies have gone out of business or downsized their operation by closing branch offices across the Algarve.

This week we hand over to John who has his own pet grievance to air: The Black Hole Have you encountered the “black hole” in Portugal yet? I don’t know where it is, I don’t know how deep it is, I don’t know how long it’s been there, or if it’s getting any bigger. What I do know is that it’s very important. I know this because all my questions to my solicitor, builder, accountant, bank or handyman have to go through the black hole before I get an answer. The black hole has a stupefying effect on people. Ask a question, and there’s a look of deep contemplation as they enter the black hole. You know by their smile, that, from the source of knowledge and wisdom that lies deep in the black hole, you are to be given an answer. True, it’s not necessarily the answer to your question but it encourages you to probe deeper.

Then Charles asks “If you want to fail, and do fail, is it a success and hence you have failed?”
Putting the two together, if the Central Bank prints a lot of money to save the Financial Institutions, knowing that it will cause the currency to collapse, have they failed? History teaches us that QE leads to hyperinflation - they know it and we know it!
The black hole is obviously a great place to go, because when you telephone them they’re often there. Of course, you don’t know how long they’ll stay there, or if they’ll ever come back, but its reassuring to know that there is somewhere so important, so vast, so immensely popular that all the professional people you deal with have time to go there so often, for such long periods of time.

The good news is that it is currently back down to around 85 Pence, which should bring back the smiles to the Algarve Pensioners’ faces. How and why did this happen, what happens next and what can we do to protect ourselves? In September 2008, there was a Banking crisis in the UK and the USA. The UK Banking System was just hours from crumbling with the RBS at the centre of the crisis. Sir John Gieve, chief executive of the Financial Services in charge of financial stability at the Bank of England explains here why the Bank of England failed to curb the growth of the bubble in borrowing and asset prices which lies behind our current woes: “We didn’t think it was going to be anything like as severe as it’s turned out to be... Why didn’t we see that it was so serious? I think that’s perhaps because we hadn’t kept pace with the extent of globalisation. We saw the credit, we saw the house prices, but we did see a fairly stable pattern of earnings, prices and output.” The Bankers and the Regulators did not think it was a problem that house prices were going through the roof, and that people were using their houses as cash machines, using up most of their But is it just a UK £

We cannot ignore it because New York and London are joined at the hip, focussed as they are, on making nothing but percentages. As the banks crash (40 so far this year in the USA) so the wealth of England and the USA is draining away. As the UK nationalises its banks and the USA nationalises the remnants of its auto industry and throws money into the black holes that were once banks, we wait for the next wave of mortgage resets to hit the system. And this is where we return to the Algarve and today. Mortgage resets!!!! Danger, red alert, we are approaching a danger zone. According to new data from the Council of Mortgage Lenders (CML), 69 per cent of mortgages taken out in April were fixed-rate deals – the highest share since June 2008 – at an average rate of 4.83 per cent. We sincerely hope you were one of them. Melanie Bien, director of independent mortgage broker Savills Private Finance, said: “Fixed rates are starting to rise and are certainly not going to get any cheaper, so if you need the security of knowing your monthly payment, now may be the time to consider a fix.” The message for borrowers wanting to take a fixed rate is clear; get in now or miss out on the relatively low rates.” Ms Bien said: “If you can fix for five years at around 5 per cent, that’s an excellent deal. Consider fixing for five years rather than two. The problem with a shorter fix is that when you remortgage, rates will be higher so it could turn out to be expensive. A longer fix will see you through the worst interest-rate Yorkshirevolatility.”

Photographs by Gordon Railton SERVES •Ingredients2 10 Tiger Shrimps • 2 Soup spoons of Palm Oil • 200 cl of Coconut Milk • 1 Medium Onion, chopped • 3 Cloves of Garlic, chopped • 1 Bay Leaf • 1 Tomato cut into cubes • Chopped Cilantro (Coentros) • Olive Oil as needed Moqueca is a traditional Brasilian dish known for many centuries and can be made in many ways, but our favourite, and our most popular dish this season, is our own special version made with shrimps. Our chef Rui has scaled this down for just two people, but restaurant-sized servings are hard to translate into small portions so you may need to experiment a bit to get the same results. For contact details please see our Ad on the opposite page. METHOD Into a large frying pan mix the onion, garlic, bay leaf and olive oil, then heat until the onions become translucent. Add the shrimps, and when they are about half done add the palm oil and the coconut milk. Simmer until the sauce thickens, then add the tomato and cilantro, stir and turn off the flame so that the tomato and cilantro can mingle without getting overdone. 3 Shake the jar vigorously and set aside for several hours or overnight. Evaluate the results:
IDENTIFYING YOUR SOIL TYPE There is a simple way to determine what type of soil – sand, loam, or clay - you have in your yard. All you need is a clean, empty jar with a lid, some clean water, a tablespoon of detergent, and a sample of the soil you want to test. To do so: 1 Fill the jar about 1/3 full with the soil to be tested.
Irrigation
• Outline your house, garage, and other structures.
• Identify trees and major
GETTING STARTED Tools and other supplies you may need: During installation, you will need several accessories and a variety of pipe fittings. The list below shows materials you may need:

There are two different styles of irrigation systems you can use: traditional sprinkler-based systems and drip irrigation systems. The good news is you don’t have to choose between them because they work better together. This is an instance where two really are better than one. Traditional sprinkler-based systems are well suited to watering large areas of grass and areas with plants having similar watering needs. They water uniformly by broadcasting water in well defined patterns, five feet or more in diameter. To water smaller areas, I recommend drip irrigation. Drip irrigation is the ideal complement to traditional irrigation. Rather than broadcasting water over large areas, a drip system is set up to water very small, specific areas. For that reason, drip systems are good for patios, near foundation walls, watering specific plants within larger garden areas and tight, slow draining clay soils. In so doing, drip systems use little water and discourage weed growth.
• Show walkways, drives, slabs, patios, and other surfaces.
• PVC pipe cutter
• Identify the size and location of the water meter (or pump) and main line.
• Screwdriver • Pipe wrenches • Hammer • Trenching shovel • Line marking paint • 1” pipe clamps (poly only)
•obstacles.Measure and record the perimeter of your property.
• Show groundcover, grass, flower beds and landscaping.
• Identify the type of soil in your yard: sand, loam, or clay.
• Identify any slopes.
2 Fill the jar with water and detergent then cap it.
DRAWING YOUR PROPERTY I suggest you use the following planning tools: pencil, scratch paper, drawing compass, 50’ tape measure, straight edge or ruler, line marking paint for marking trenches. Remember to:
Page 33 Gardens
A If the water is clear and the soil has settled to the bottom, you have predominantly SAND SOIL
The do’s and don’ts of installing your own watering system
A n automatic irrigation system will help you create the landscape you’ve always wanted by making sure your plants get the water they need, just when they need it. How many times have you forgotten to water your lawn, or worse yet, over-watered it and ended up with unsightly brown spots and muddy puddles? You could be using up to 50% more water than you need. That isn’t good for your lawn or your pocketbook. The solution is precision watering using an automatic irrigation system which can be adjusted to the individual needs of different plantings. You will get a thicker, greener lawn and more beautiful gardens, as you save time and water.
B If the water is still murky with bits of matter still suspended in it, you have LOAM SOIL.
C If the water is still murky, and there is a visible ring of sediment around the jar, then your soil is MOSTLY CLAY
• PTFE tape • Duct tape • Tape measure DETERMINE YOUR WATER PRESSURE & FLOW I will assume that the water pressure is 40psi, but if you have the option of using a water pressure gauge to determine your true water pressure it will help. To calculate the water flow you will need a 5 litre bucket and some means to time the flow. Now place the 5-gallon bucket under an outside tap and time how long it takes to fill it. Use the chart below to convert to GPM. This test tells you what your home’s water capacity is measured in GPM at 40 PSI.
Time To Fill Bucket Gallons Per Minute 15 seconds 20 GPM 20 seconds 15 GPM 25 seconds 12 GPM 30 seconds 10 GPM 40 seconds 7.5 GPM D.I.Y .
• Separate shady and sunny *Differentareas. sprinkler types apply water at different rates so don’t mix sprinkler types within zones. For example, fixed-spray sprinklers should not be grouped with rotary sprinklers. Add up the sprinkler GPM for each of the zones you have created on your plan. If the total flow exceeds the safe design capacity for your system, split that zone in two, or, if possible, put some of the sprinklers into another zone. Remember to move sprinklers to other zones based on slope, sun, shade or GPM. Now count up the number of zones required as this will determine the number of valves and solenoids required to control your watering system. Now with all this information you are ready to finish your final plan ready for installing your sprinkler system which I will explain in next months magazine. da Liberdade 289 798
• Use 570TM fan spray sprinklers to cover smaller areas. They are effective up to radii of 15’.
• Use bubblers or drip irrigation in small confined areas and to water plants individually. For proper coverage, layout your sprinkler heads so that the spray from one reaches all those adjacent to it. Head-to-head coverage ensures uniform water application, which saves water and creates the best possible results. For areas with winds regularly above 8 mph, place sprinklers closer together — 90% of the spray radius or less depending on the prevailing wind direction and speed.

Now it’s time to determine how many zones you will need. A zone is a group of sprinklers that operate together using one common irrigation valve. Each valve, and thus each zone, is operated by your system’s timer. To determine the number of zones you need in your system, do the following: Write down the flow capacity in GPM for each type of sprinkler in your layout.

Olhanense’s last game of the season in front of 8,500 fans was a real carnival atmosphere. With promotion & the title already secure it was a time to celebrate with micro lights soaring overhead, marching bands and the players wearing face paints and wigs as they were introduced to their adoring fans. Two storks even made a brief appearance to see what all the fuss was about! The game, a 1-0 win over Gil Vicente, was an anti-climax but as the final whistle went the party started in earnest. Club President, Isidoro Sousa and captain Rui Duarte received the Championship Trophy from League President Herminio Loureiro. The crowd was allowed onto the pitch to get autographs, photographs and make merry with the players and staff who had guided the club back to the Premier League after a 34 year absence. In the afternoon the players visited the new Ria Shopping Centre, built on Olhanense’s old Padinha Ground, to sign yet more autographs and then it was an open top bus tour of the town before a reception at the Town Hall. From early evening a full programme of pop music including local groups Voodoo Pickles and Punk C’Mantega performed in the seafront gardens as the whole of Olhão and the surrounding area continued to celebrate well into the night.

Whilst many fans are still basking in the euphoria of their team’s promotion to Liga Sagres, the club is busy ensuring that the facilities are ready for the new season in mid August. Renovation works have commenced to extend the capacity to 12,000 with the possibility of temporary stands adding another 3,000 spectators for the big games against Benfica, Sporting & Porto. Olhão Mayor Francisco Leal has unveiled a €900,000 investment package which could help to generate an additional €1.5 million income for the local economy. Mayor Leal further added that it was completely out of the question to use the Algarve Stadium thus ensuring that the club remains at the heart of the local community. Isodoro Sousa was re-elected to serve a second 2 year term as President. It was always going to be a foregone conclusion but the 2759 votes he received was a resounding seal of approval for his leadership. Last season’s playing budget of €630,000 was one of the lowest in Liga Vitalis. Olhão recently celebrated its local holiday and Isidoro Sousa was honoured to receive the prestigious Gold Medal of Merit in recognition of his services to the city and municipality. The club now has over 5000 socio-members. So the future looks bright if the people of the Algarve continue to support the only Premier League football team between Setubal and Seville. Under the club’s strong financial & managerial leadership and with a dynamic young coach, SC Olhanense may well be able to celebrate their centenary in 2012 in some style. The Microsoft Xbox is a opedsystemvideogamedevel-byMicrosoft & first released in November 2001. Every genre is covered on the Xbox platform from racing to shooters to puzzle games. The console was also the first to have a hard drive enabling gamers to save games and music directly on to the system. It’s also worth remembering that it doubles as a DVD player too. When you are going to spend your hard earned cash on a new game console, it is usually a good idea to do your homework first so you know exactly what you are getting yourself into. There are three models :- Xbox, Xbox 360 and Xbox 360 Elite. Experts suggest Xbox 360 is the best value for money and gets the best user rating from the three models.

Sky and Microsoft could be joining up to offer live TV and pay-per-view content on the Xbox 360. The service could be similar to Sky Player, which currently offers live TV and a selection of pay-per-view content over the Internet. We’ve had a demo of Sky Player and have been very impressed by the picture quality of the live streaming. So its arrival on the 360 would only be a good thing. It’s worth noting that Sky Player uses Microsoft Silverlight, so it’s wouldn’t be a massive surprise for the two of them to be working together on this little enterprise.
