Hello, having set off hot foot to the Tavira Lounge of course after reading your article in the last magazine !!) I fell across a super shop called Karisma which is two or three doors before the Tavira Lounge on the same street, which was filled with just about everything from paintings, cards with views of Tavira, jewellery and bright clothes. The interesting thing is that most of the goods have been painted & made by local artists with a lot of imagination !!! The Portuguese lady who owns & runs the shop is called Paula, & is herself a potter so there are tiles etc on sale, which have been made by her & the shop itself which is like a big cavern, has been kitted out by her in a wonderful way. I dont know if this is the sort of thing that would interest your readers? but it is certainly worth a visit!! Regards, Biba Ure PS. definitely while you are there ask to see the tiny terrace at the back of the shop, which is right on the River Gilau. We really enjoy reading your magazine & I send a copy back to our daughter in London, who devours it, as she is batty about Tavira & the area ! done ! Clear your

Summer is the perfect time to go outside and have fun. it's one of my favourite times of year because there are so many outdoor activities to choose from. everything is more fun outside, whether you're swimming, running, football and tennis, walking or cycling. but the summer heat can be a problem if you're not careful, particularly in areas with extreme heat and humidity. For me, the biggest problems are staying hydrated and maintaining my body's electrolytes and salt. When you sweat, your body loses not only water, but electrolytes and salt, too. this delicate balance of water and electrolytes is crucial to keep your body functioning properly. if you don't drink enough water, you can get dehydrated and suffer from light-headedness and nausea. if not recognized, dehydration can even result in kidney failure. however, if you drink too much water without replenishing your electrolytes, you can experience hyponatremia. this can lead to confusion, nausea, muscle cramps, seizures or even death in extreme cases. here are some things to keep in mind when it comes to exercising in the heat: 1the time of day is important. unless you are training for an event that takes place in the daytime heat, avoid exercising from

James Polley, originally from newbury, berkshire, has lived in the algarve since 1979. he first visited here with his parents viewing properties as they intended to move here. James returned to england briefly to complete his studies, then quickly moved back to live in the sun here with his parents. he began work as an electrician, then later installing satelite t v. amongst many other jobs. by chance 15 years ago, he got involved in a charity auction, and hasn't looked back since. he has been involved in auctions ever since, but recently noticed that the auction process is not as popular has it used to be. buyers like to know prices, but still like to be able to nogotiate, and sellers want a fair price for their goods. in march this year James opened Jem's second hand showroom. a large warehouse full of all sorts of interesting and useful items, all in good condition and at fair prices. he has in place a system whereby items not sold after one month are reduced by 25%. if a month later they are still not sold, a further reduction of 25% is made. after a third month, should the item still not be sold it is either collected by the owner, or donated to charity (pre-agreed). this, James explains, ensures the item finds it's right price, and also that stock is constantly turning over. he has clients from all over the algarve and spain, and couldn't be happier how popular the showoom has turned out. James would like to thank his wife marta for her help & support, malcom who has also been a great help, and would like to say a special thanks to margo & david, again for their full support. of an Idea! in São Brás, a new place out a charity Auction October this fantastic Fire Poppy Appeal!

soothing images of the alentejo countryside, sally stafford captures floral and pastoral landscapes incorporating colours that are in harmony with nature. like sally, the alentejo enchants beth richardson. using intense colours and a naïve painting technique her powerful images resonate perfectly on white walls and in minimalist modern settings. expressionist in style, laura Wright is a modern portrait painter. Following a year-long residency in andalucia she extended her repertoire to include a sequence of townscapes. surrounded by the traditional white houses of the spanish ‘pueblos,’ the series has grown to include many other places. a resident of Olhão, meinke Flesseman produces paintings and collages that are subtle, muted and diffused. she applies pure silk tissue, finely woven linen and layers of paint that are overlaid with realistic figures, entertaining animals and beautifully composed scenery. to make the opening weekend a special occasion there will be wine tasting provided by barranco longo and sumptuous summer savouries baked by Jonnie at bistro des Z’artes. a small charge of 2 euros will be made and donated to the algarve cancer association (aca – aOa). at other times entry to the gallery is free.

For the past four years they’ve owned their own house in butoque where they are valued members of the local community. “We were determined to integrate with the locals and although we still have a long way to go with the language we find that by making the effort our Portuguese friends are very tolerant!“

T his month we had the pleasure of meeting Yves and Graça, at one of their outstanding, completed projects near almancil. urbidynamic, is based in s brás de alportel, and was formed in 2004 by owner Yves, who came from belgium to the algarve in 1996. he started work here as a technical manager in a drainage company and soon decided to start his own building business here. since then his company has grown from strength to strength, having established itself for quality and high standards, as well as aftercare. their services include everything from building houses, renovations, pools installations, landscape gardening and renovation work on protected buildings, to a simple redecoration. no job is too big, or too small. he now boasts fourteen employees, who all work to Yves high standards, and as a professional team. they have recently worked both in the algarve and spain, in resort hotels owned by a dutch bank, doing ongoing repairs within the hotel, apartments, villas and the spa areas.

client asked if she would look after his estate for him whilst he was away. Graça enjoyed this experience very much and as more clients were requesting that she look after their properties too, she decided to start her own villa management company. Graça and Yves had known each other for many years, having shared the same circle of friends and got together as a couple in 2009. the owners of many of the properties Yves had built wanted someone to look after them to the same high standards they had been built. the couple decided that it would be great for Graça to run the villa management side of urbidynamics. they now offer a very personal management service that includes pool and garden maintenance, as well as supervision of properties if required, and of course a full property repair service. each package is tailor made according to their client’s needs. Yves and Graça speak english, dutch, German, Portuguese and spanish, together they provide a formidable combination of both skills and experience to suit every uneed.rbidynamics's motto is “nothing is impossible”. they pride themselves on their trustworthy and fair approach in treating their customers well. they offer the unique opportunity to have a property built or renovated to the very highest of standards, then properly managed as well as maintened. this works perfectly as Yves explains; 'i know my properties inside out, any problems can be resolved immediately! ' many of Yves and Graça’s clients have now become good friends. Peter and mieke for example (pictured above with Graça), who were kind enough show us around their stunning home, built from a ruin by Yves, and now managed by Graça.

our focus this month is on Fuseta beach, off the beautiful lagoon “ria Formosa”, the algarve's nature reserve. For those of us here in the winter of 2009/2010 you will remember the heavy rains and stormy weather. these storms destroyed approximately 60% of the beach houses on the island, as the sand foundations were washed away. major work has been carried out to repair the damage and restore Fuseta’s beach to its former glory. We were kindly shown around by sondra, a local restaurant and bar owner, who has a real passion for the area. Fuseta has two beaches to choose from. the first beach, on the lagoon, in the town itself, is very safe for children, especially when the tide is out. the other is a very short

A s a non-resident property owner in Portugal, you needed to appoint by law a fiscal representative. this could be a family member or a friend, but in most cases owners appointed a lawyer or their accountant for a fee, varying between euro 180 to 300 euro per annum (double for couples). this practice seems to be coming to an end. in may 2011 the european court of Justice ruled that Portugal can not force citizens from the eu to appoint a fiscal representative, as it is in violation with the right of free movement of people and capital. Owners from outside the eu still must appoint a fiscal representative. although Portuguese law has not changed yet, tax departments are adjusting their systems and it is possible to register with your home country (resident) address. in case you want to cancel your existing fiscal representative, you need to go to Finanças in person in order to cancel and register your home address instead. While you are there, you may also take the opportunity to ask for ‘a senha’ – a digital code to access your file at the finance department – for future reference. if for any reason your council tax notification does not arrive on the new address, you can just go online to settle the payment in a timely manner and avoid fines for late payment. You can also provide your property management company with a copy of the document which includes payment details to settle the council tax on your behalf. as this is a recurring cost saving, it pays for itself to have your property professionally managed. as the above is a cost saving for all european non-resident homeowners, the following only applies to uK residents namely capital allowances on Furnished holiday lettings (Fhl). after a lot

Page 19 of confusion since the 2009 budget was announced – repealed in 2010 and retained in their present form until april 2011 – the main benefit is it remains extended to qualifying property anywhere in the european economic area (eea). there are a number of valuable tax reliefs available to the owners which will now continue for the foreseeable future. this includes the ability to offset trading losses against other income and capital gains relief’s. something less known to owners is the possibility for claiming capital allowances on plant and machinery within the property, such as air conditioning, electrical installations, heating, ventilation, kitchens, bathrooms and includes also loose furniture & equipment, bed linen (aka furniture packs). costs of these items vary but are typically 10% to 30% of the cost of a building. however, in order to claim the allowances a specialist valuation need to be prepared by a qualified surveyor. anyone who bought a holiday home in the past and still owns it could potentially claim the capital allowances as there is no time limit as to how long ago the property was bought. in addition, with the annual investment allowance preserved at £100.000 until april 2012, there is a time limited opportunity to fund a significant part of a purchase through tax relief, e.g. on a purchased property of £400.000 with ‘inherent plant’ valued at £100.000, the owner would get an immediate tax relief of £50.000 (at a tax rate of 50%). the information regarding capital allowances on Fhl is based on information provided by davis langdon, the leading specialists in this area in the uK. davis langdon is part of aecOm, www.eastalgarvemag.com Tlm:(+351) 915 500 141/2 Office (+351) 961 952 148 Fax (+351)281 971 076 Ângela Dias Tel (+351) 969 459 200 Rua José Pires Padinha, No 44, Escrit.13, 8800, Tavira eapr@iol.pt • eapm@iol.pt www.east-algarve-property-rentals.com • www.east-algarve-property-management.com By the sea, in the mountains or in the city... enjoy your stay with us. T o complete the article published in Junes issue i have added below another list of herbs you might like to try to grow, all these plants can be grown in any size garden, from a window box to a more specialized herb garden. so whatever your gardening skills, there is something for you to try. hdillow to grow aniseed-flavoured dill dislikes having its roots disturbed – sow it where it is to grow, either in the ground or in large containers in a warm sunny site with well-drained soil. don’t grow dill near fennel, as the two can cross-pollinate resulting in seedlings with muddled flavours. if you can’t provide these conditions, then don’t waste your time – dill won’t thrive in cold, wet areas. sow little and often in march to april in the garden to give you a supply of fresh leaves all summer. how to care for dill Protect your plants from strong winds and support them with twiggy sticks. how to harvest Pick leaves fresh whenever you need them. if you want to use the seed too, cut off the flower heads, put them in a paper bag and leave in a warm place for a week. the seeds will then fall from the husks and can be stored in an airtight container. recommended varieties the variety ‘bouquet’ is shorter than the common form at only 60cm. it runs to seed very quickly, so is ideal if you prefer the flavour of the seed. if you’re growing dill for ornamental effects as well as culinary, go for ‘tetra’ or ‘herkules’.

Tarragon With its delicate aniseed taste, this herb is perfect with chicken and fish. it's the main flavouring in béarnaise sauce how to grow there are two types of tarragon – French and russian. French tarragon has the superior flavour and much more tender leaves. it doesn’t produce viable seed, so buy French tarragon in spring as established plants from the garden centre. it is fairly slow growing, so you’ll need
Page 32 www.eastalgarvemag.com Gardens
several plants for a decent crop of leaves. how to care for tarragon sunshine and well-drained soil are essential. Plant it on its own in a container, as it can easily be swamped by more vigorous plants. Water sparingly and move the container to a cool, frost-free place in winter. how to harvest cut the top third of the stems for use in the kitchen. recommended varieties French tarragon (artemisia dracunculus) with its long, thin, aniseed-flavoured leaves, is definitely the one to choose. lemon VeBena how to grow lemon verbena is a small, attractive shrub but it loses its leaves in winter. because it can’t withstand frost and therefore needs protection throughout the winter, it’s best to keep it as a container plant. You can buy established plants from the garden centre or you can grow your own from cuttings. take softwood cuttings from new growth in spring or more mature shoots in late summer or early autumn. Push the cuttings into a mix of compost and grit, transferring into larger pots once they’ve rooted. how to care for lemon verbena a warm humid spot in light free draining soil – such as against a sunny wall – is ideal. Prune lightly in spring and remove any dead tips once your plant starts to reshoot – this will encourage new growth. cut plants back in autumn to keep a compact shape and move them under cover to protect from frosts. how to harvest Pick fresh leaves while the plant is in full growth – they make a refreshing tea and can be used to flavour cakes and ice cream. drying the leaves concentrates their flavour – store in an airtight container. hBaYow to grow bay tolerates both sun and shade, and will grow in any soil providing it isn’t too wet. Position in a sheltered spot as the leaves can be scorched by cold winds. bay is an ideal container plant – it’s only moderately hardy, so growing it in a pot makes for easier winter protection. buy new plants in late spring and plant into containers in may. how to care for bay clip plants into shape if necessary in June to July keeping the plant in a controllable shape. how to harvest Fresh leaves have a stronger flavour than dried ones and, although leaves are available all year round, it’s a good idea to pick and dry some leaves in august for use in winter. dry the leaves between the pages of an old paperback weighted down under a stack of books. this will stop the leaves from curling as they dry and will therefore make them easier to store. recommended varieties the normal species of bay (laurus nobilis) is the only one used for culinary purposes. hrosemarYowtogrow rosemary is widely available as established plants in garden centres for planting in spring. For more plants, take cuttings from young shoots in spring or summer. rosemary can be used as a low hedge. how to care for rosemary rosemary is slightly tender and needs a sunny, sheltered position in well-drained soil; it does well in chalky soils. if growing it in a container, add some grit to the compost to aid drainage and don’t over water. after flowering in march, trim into shape and feed. how to harvest You can pick leaves from this evergreen all year round. it’s a good idea to dry some leaves at the end of summer if you want to use lots of rosemary over the winter, or add a sprig to olive oil for salad dressings. recommended varieties the common rosemary (rosmarinus officinalis) is the hardiest form and most used in cooking. ‘miss Jessopp’s upright’ is a more vigorous and upright variety and makes a good focal point in a herb tbed.he Prostratus Group are lowgrowing forms ideal for the top of a wall or rock garden. corsican rosemary has a more pungent scent. hsageowto grow there’s a wide variety of plain green and coloured-leafed sages available in garden centres. alternatively, take cuttings in late spring or early summer. all varieties will root easily in about four weeks. how to care for sage sage needs a well-drained fertile soil in a sunny spot. if your soil is a little heavy, dig in some grit before planting. alternatively, sage will grow well in a container; again add grit to the compost to improve the cdrainage.utplants back hard in march to about 15cm above ground level to prevent them becoming leggy. if you’ve got an old straggly plant, it’s best to get rid of it and replace it with a new one. how to harvest Fresh leaves can be picked any time before flowering. in theory, you should be able to pick leaves all year round, as sage is evergreen, but the leaves can suffer in cold winters. harvest in summer and dry for winter muse.ix chopped sage and onions into sausage meat for a great tasting stuffing. recommended varieties the most commonly used for cooking is sage (salvia officinalis).

Mark O’Shaughness y colourful foliage varieties can also be used and look good in the garden. try ‘Purpurascens’ and ‘tricolor’. hminTowto grow mint grown from seed will rarely be the same as the parent plant, so the only way to get your favourite mint is to buy established plants – garden centres will have a good supply in spring. Or try scrounging a cutting from a friend – the shoots will root easily in water. all mints are invasive to some degree, spreading via underground stems. this makes them ideal for growing in containers. mints should be renewed every two to three years to keep them vigorous. lift the plant in spring, save some of the pale, young, underground stems with lots of buds and replant them. throw the rest away. how to care for mint mint prefers moist soil and light sun to shade. Keep it well-watered and remove the flowers to stop itself seeding. Feed with a weak liquid Forfertiliser.asupply of fresh mint in winter, take sections of root from the parent plant in October and lay them on the surface of fresh compost in a new pot. cover lightly with compost, water and place a warm spot or on the kitchen windowsill. Fresh shoots will sprout within a few weeks. how to harvest Pick fresh mint leaves throughout the growing season. Pick leaves before flowering and freeze them, either whole or chopped, in airtight containers. recommended varieties spearmint (mentha spicata) is the familiar mint with long, pointed leaves and a refreshing flavour. For food, teas and salads choose moroccan and tashkent mints. apple mint has a mild mint flavour and apple-scented, woolly leaves. Pineapple mint has pretty, creamstreaked leaves and can also be used in cooking; and finally black peppermint, which has a strong minty taste, is ideal for flavouring food and for mint tea. i have tried to include all the herbs we use in our kitchen in a variety of different dishes, the list is almost too large to include in these short articles, but the additions i have chosen here for the second part give you a good choice of herbs to grow and use. the idea of this guide is to give you the basics for growing your own herbs, but if you don’t find a particular herb you would like to try then you can always drop me an e-mail and i will attempt to give you the advice needed. Architectural Landscaping can transform even the smallest of homes There is a definite trend these days towards people looking to buy smaller homes, not only here in the south of Por tugal, but throughout europe. the norm is for urban structure and high density occupation. Why is that?
There are three main reasons: On the one hand the average age of european society is still rising. there are more older people around and the tendency to believe that “less is more” has a lot to do with the fact that the chosen house and garden has to be maintained. the smaller the property, the less work there is to do - or to pay for - and very often buyers choose an apart ment with just a terrace or balcony, generally completely tiled. Other reasons to favour a town house over a country house are having important facilities within easy walking distance, being close to cultural events and simply to en joy the bustle of street life. the final reasons are financial: the costs for labour and services have risen noticeably, and particularly the Pound sterling has lost a lot of its initial value towards the euro. Fewer people can afford to keep up with the costs of keeping exten

There is a trend for smaller and beautiful. the object of this article is to show how a boring and rather sterile ground floor courtyard in a denselybuilt townhouse complex in tavira was transformed into a scintillating lush and tropical pearl of paradise. the owners, a foreign couple, con tacted vitthal, to do “something” with the garden. the only desire they expressed was “We´d like a little pond to cool our feet in, in the sum tmer”.heoriginal courtyard size is almost a square of 7 x 8m (approx. 21 x 24’). it had predefined terraces in an l-shape, an outdoor kitchen, a bbQ and a shower. You would sit in it and stare at the bare and barren walls which rose up to 3.50m high. no one could sit there and feel comfortable. after agreeing to sit down and work out a detailed plan together, it took only 1½ hours to draw up a sketch. to the surprise of both the landscape architect and the couple, there was space for everything: a round seat ing area in the form of a tiled bench; small but extremely densely plant ed raised flowerbeds; a pool and a shower, plus all the technical equip ment necessary to clean the pool hidden under the outdoor-kitchen tshelves.hegarden is divided by a serpen tine wall of varying height edging the flowerbeds which is also used as a backsupport to the seating area. it ends in a doorway with an antique frieze and provides privacy to the person taking an outdoor shower. the original idea of “something to cool the feet in the summer” , evolved into a tiny but fully equipped pool of approximately 11m2, with a cascade built of natural regional stones care fully fitted into one corner. the intensive planting of a variety

There has been so much press with the new royalty, we thought that a glimps into the past would make a refreshing change. the autobiography of the queens best friend gives us an insight into what really happens behind closed doors. mrs rhodes, cousin and friend of the Queen, and lady-in-waiting to the Queen mother at the time of her death, is a natural anecdotalist and a sharp observer. her discretion has not always been absolute and her helpfulness can sometimes get her into trouble. For years, she has been sitting almost unnoticed in the grandstand of 20th century history, mostly keeping her counsel but occasionally popping up to correct inaccuracies or to provide courteous biographers with guidance over a glass of sherry. now she has written her own story, the Final curtsey due for release this month. this is the intimate and revealing autobiography of margaret rhodes, the first cousin of Queen elizabeth ii and the niece of Queen elizabeth, the Queen mother. margaret was born into the scottish aristocracy, into a now almost vanished world of privilege. royalty often came to stay and her house was run in the style of downton abbey. in the second World War years she 'lodged' at buckingham Palace while she worked for mi5. she was a bridesmaid at the wedding of her cousin, Princess elizabeth to Prince Philip. three years later the King and Queen attended her own wedding; Princess margaret was a bridesmaid. in 1990 she was appointed as a lady-in-Waiting to the Queen mother, acting also as her companion, which she describes in touching detail. in the early months of 2002, she spent as much time as possible with her ailing aunt, and was at her bedside when she died at easter that year. this is a fascinating account of a special life, with the author's family relationships to nobility and royalty, her long and special marriage, her children and grandchildren and a life lived to the full. Free market money emerges after a barter / exchange economy is well-established, a society progress to the concept of free market money and a currency system emerges. traditionally, these monetary systems have been based on hard assets that were highly valuable, scarce, easily commoditized, durable, and easily transportable. because of this, the primary currencies of choice, for the past 5000 have been gold and silver. Government emerges and regulates the Free market communal order is needed in a functional society and therefore, some type of government is formed. as societies become increasingly complex, industrial and populous, the government naturally seeks to expand their influence and control over business, commerce, and the market. laws, rules, and regulations are instituted to regulate and control trade through tariffs, taxes, quotas, a Free market emerges Free market money emerges

Gabigest and penalties. taxes are imposed to support the government agenda. Government monopolizes money tsupplyhegovernment takes control of the money supply and sets up a currency system by issuing official coinage from a central mint. it controls the size, design, weight, and purity of the coinage. the government may issue paper promissory notes redeemable in coinage and decrees these notes are exchangeable for goods or services. this money is called a “fiat” currency, meaning “by Governmentdecree”. debases the money Government must increase taxes to support its continuing growth and the citizens object to increased taxation and seizure of their wealth. in order to fund itself and to soften dissent from higher taxes, the government finds itself in a position that in order to maintain social spending, it begins to debase the value of money. historically governments have shaven off pieces of coins, issued smaller coins, or made coins with less gold and silver content. eventually it removes all precious metals from the coinage. ultimately it declares that its promissory notes are no longer redeemable in precious metals. at this point, there is no hard asset backing or basis to the monetary system. issuing more money with no precious metals backing allows the government to create money at will for its own purposes. When the money in circulation increases but the availability of goods and services remain the same, the prices for the goods and services increase. the increased money supply results in dilution of the purchasing power of the currency, which is the true nature of inflation, robbing citizens of wealth and savings through decrease in purchasing power. non-confidence and collapse of imoneynflation, debt, and deficit increase and citizens realize that the fiat money representing their labor, savings and wealth is rapidly losing its value and purchasing power. by-products of poor money management such as food inflation and shortages, personal debt, and civil and political unrest begin to accelerate. this leads to a confidence crisis and currency collapse the re-emergence of Gold and silver as money citizens desire to return to a monetary system more secure and less inflationary. they realize that gold and silver offer safe haven for preservation of value and wealth and an insurance policy against current and future currency debasement. People demand more gold and silver and accumulate the metals as a key component of their overall wealth within the society. clearly we have entered stage 6 of the life cycle of money: non-confidence and collapse. olhanense manager daúto Faquirá & his coaching staff have put pen to paper and signed one year contracts. Faquirá, who is keen to develop young talent, will be casting his eye over several promising youngsters as medical checks and pre-season training gets underway at the beginning of July. captain rui duarte, who has been at the club for eight years, has signed a twelve month contract. the Olhão outfit has also secured the continued loan of centre-back mexer and keeper ricardo baptista from sporting. new signings include Fábio Freitas, brazilian u21 international goalkeeper, midfielder vitor vinha (aves) and ivanildo (Portimonense). sTorKs and seagulls To Clash Olhanense, with their stork mascot ’moss’, entertain the seagulls, brighton & hove albion, in a pre-season friendly at the Jose arcanjo stadium on saturday 23rd July. the sussex side took about 500 fans to Portugal for last year’s pre-season tour and a similar number are expected this year as enthusiasm builds for the club’s first season in their new american express community stadium. Gus Poyet, who had an illustrious playing career with real Zaragoza, chelsea and tottenham hotspur, and his team are spending a week in the algarve. Poyet was voted english league One manager of the Year for his achievements and joins a rare number of Football managers that have won such an accolade in their first full season in management. before that another sussex side, crawley town, will be resident at the colina verde Golf & sports resort, maragota near moncarapacho. crawley, the newest members of the Football league, spent several days at colina verde earlier this year before their epic Fa cup tie against manchester united at Old trafford. the reds will play Olhanense on the superb new pitch installed at colina verde on monday 11th July kick-off 5.00pm. crawley boss steve evans said, “We are fortunate to be playing such quality opponents and it will be an early test of what we are about. i could have taken the option to play a team from a much lower level and scored a barrow load of goals but in reality that tells you nothing, sc Olhanense will be a real test.”

attendances at Portuguese league games have stagnated over the past five years, averaging just over 10,000 spectators per game. With every Porto, benfica and sporting game being shown live on tv, it is no wonder that in these difficult economic times, fans are staying at home. liga ZOn sagres has slipped out of the top ten leagues in europe, for crowds, with the swiss league taking their place. the failure of sporting in recent years has had a direct impact on attendances. according to the study 'european Football attendance report 2011', developed by iPam (Portuguese institute of marketing management), the alvalade club has lost, on average, 10,000 fans per game over the last five years. the study analysed the gates of the top twenty european leagues (322 teams). benfica crowds were down 12,000 per game compared to their 2009/10 championship winning season. in contrast, Fc Porto, with an average attendance of 36,986 spectators (still lower than benfica, with 38,146 spectators per game) had the highest occupancy rate of 75%. the figures are well below those registered across europe with barcelona in top spot averaging 80,000 per match. Olhanense’s average gate dropped from 4,132 in 2009/10 to 3,404 last term, slightly ahead of Portimonense who played half their games at the algarve stadium. bottom of the list were relegated naval who averaged 1,526. new initiatives such as ‘Kids for a euro’ need to be tried as the young people of to-day are our only next generation.

ife would be most uninteresting without music, which touches the whole human race. We need go no further than the words of st Paul “sing and make melody in your heart”, music is indeed a metaphor of life. “rhythm is life” rhythm and harmony of mind is one of the secrets of a happy life as well as of playing good golf. tension is the exact opposite of rhythm and is caused by worry which tightens up the muscles. in golf it is usually too much theory that starts it. do not clutter up your mind with imaginary faults. Golf is difficult enough without complicating and confusing the issue. if you get the rhythm your muscles will relax and the mechanism of the swing will co-ordinate and function properly. music can help you, men march better and farther to music, natives chant as they row canoes to keep their stroke together. the harlem Globetrotters world famous basketball players do part of their training to tmusic.here is no reason at all why anyone cannot play good golf after swinging to music. i remember many years ago watching a group of children being coached by a professional, swinging to music. there was a gramophone on the practise ground playing “the blue danube”, they certainly were enjoying it. in one lesson they developed the rhythm, after a few minutes they began to achieve the pivot and swing which, without music, would have taken them several weeks. the perfect rhythmic swing can be obtained by swinging to and fro to the accompaniment of an old fashioned waltz. any strauss will do, so will lehar’s “count of luxembourg”. modern waltz are too slow, 56 bars to the minute is the right tempo. it is just a matter of swinging to music until it becomes a habit. You may get it in less than a month it might take you a little longer. When you play a round, forget all about your swing just concentrate on hitting through the ball. so all you golfers get out there and practise the “Waltz swing”, put the gramophone on at home and swing to music, or even better go to the practise ground with a cd player and ear phones, and start swinging to music. the “blue danube” is perfect to practise your “rhythm swing”.
