News Archaeologists return to Cacela Velha to reveal medieval secrets

A

new round of archaeological digs are taking place in Cacela Velha in a bid to reveal the “medieval secrets” of Muslim and Christian occupation that are still hidden beneath the picturesque village. Around 30 researchers and university students are involved in the digs which will take place until July 12. “The initiative aims to reassess existing vestiges, delimit the occupation areas and identify new areas with archaeological remains,” says Vila Real de Santo António council, one of the driving forces behind the project which also involves the Algarve culture board (DRCA) and the University of the Algarve. Says the council, the digs will be carried out in the areas where archaeologists have already uncovered an Islamic neighbourhood that existed between the 12th and 13th centuries and the medieval Christian necropolis that is traced back to the 13th century all the way to the 16th century. During the digs, there will also be a series of events that will be open to everyone, including a conference about “funeral practices during medieval times” at Casa do Pároco on Thursday, June 27 and an Open Day on Tuesday, July 9 which will allow anyone to enjoy an up-close look at the findings between 10am and 2pm. Also planned is a guided tour led by the archaeologists in charge of the digs on Saturday, July 13 at 6pm. Says VRSA council, the main goal of this project is to learn more about Cacela Velha’s rich medieval history and obtain more information about the different groups of people who resided in the area during medieval times. michael.bruxo@algarveresident.com

Ambassador Chris Sainty and his wife Sarah welcomed hundreds of guests to the festivities where Titan the Robot was the star of the show. Chris Sainty spoke of the special bond of friendship that exists between Portugal and the UK who will be playing a major role in the 2019 Science Meeting being held in Lisbon from the 8th to 10th July. The light rain and cool evening could not dampen the celebrations where guests enjoyed a variety of foods and drinks including a selection of beers from the Algarve Rock microbrewery in Faro.

Fire destroys access to Tavira’s Pego do Inferno beauty spot

G

etting there was never easy but now it has become virtually impossible after a fire destroyed the remaining walkways to Pego do Inferno, a stunning waterfall found in Tavira and considered one of the eastern Algarve’s most popular attractions. The blaze broke out on Saturday June 22nd and consumed around three hectares of land, destroying the whole area around the waterfall. Although Pego do Inferno has not been officially open to visitors since a fire caused considerable damage to the area in 2012, the waterfall remained one of the main attractions of the municipality and was visited every day by hundreds of people. It became something of an ‘open secret’, motivating local residents and holidaymakers to venture into rural Tavira to find the stunning cascade, the largest of three waterfalls in the Asseca river valley, and swim in the lake. In 2011, Pego do Inferno made headlines over vandalism and safety issues. The council even closed the site to safeguard the area, but after the 2012 fire, Pego do Inferno was never the same. For some time, there were ‘no entry’ signs at the spot, but eventually they were removed. The waterfall even dried up occasionally and pictures of the neglect that the beauty spot had been subjected to were often posted on social media. Eventually in 2017, a clean-up was carried out and water started flowing consistently again, leading to a new wave of interest in the area. Tavira mayor Jorge Botelho had said in the past that he hoped to rebuild the paths to the waterfall, but the plans never materialised. Speaking to Correio da Manhã tabloid, he said that the council had recently carried out a “cleanup” at the site but that the fire has now “destroyed everything that was there”. So far, the cause of the fire has not been revealed

and PJ police are said to be investigating. Botelho says the council is looking into the possibility of renovating the area so that the waterfall can be opened to the public again. Why is it called Pego do Inferno? The most popular story is that a carriage fell into the lake and was never found. As divers were allegedly unable to find the bottom of the lake, it became known as ‘Pego do Inferno’ (Hell’s Pit). Locals also speak of underwater tunnels that connect to the Guadiana and Gilão rivers. michael.bruxo@algarveresident.com

EN125 renovations stalled again

D

rivers will have to continue dealing with the “miserable” state of the EN125 road section between Olhão and Vila Real de Santo António after the Court of Auditors rejected a request to revise the public-private partnership contract between the government and the concession company Rotas do Algarve Litoral. The roadworks have been in the pipeline for years but have been delayed by an array of bureaucratic issues. Mayors in the eastern Algarve are now calling on the government to take over the work and complete it. “The Court of Auditors defends the public treasury and it did not approve this publicprivate partnership in which a concession company wants all the rights and none of the duties,” recently re-elected Castro Marim mayor, Francisco Amaral, told Correio da Manhã tabloid. “The road is in a miserable state,” he warns, adding that there is a lack of roundabouts to make the eastern section of the EN125 safer. Tavira mayor Jorge Botelho, who is also president of the Algarve municipalities association (AMAL), says he has already requested a meeting with the government to discuss the next steps. “I am yet to receive feedback. Only at this meeting will we know what the government’s plans are,” he told regional news website Sulinformação. As the situation stands, the roadworks can only be carried out by Rotas do Algarve Litoral, the concession company which has already revealed it has no plans of actually moving forward with them. The alternative is terminating the concession contract and having Portugal’s infrastructure authority – Infraestruturas de Portugal – take over the works. michael.bruxo@algarveresident.com

Y

‘Yikes’ and ‘Ouch’ or words to that effect!!

ou know that pain when you take your first steps on a hot beach? Well that’s what it’s like for a dog walking on hot pavement. And if their nails are overgrown, the pain is even worse! Caring for the feet (paws) of our furry friends is an often-overlooked aspect of their healthcare, yet it is a crucial one. A dog’s pads provide cushioning to help protect bones and joints from shock. They also provide insulation against extreme weather, aid walking on rough ground, and help protect tissue within the paw. With all that work to do, it’s no wonder your furry friend’s paws take quite a beating. Your dog’s nails should not touch the ground nor should they click when they walk across the floor. If they become too long, it can become painful for them to walk and they may take on an altered posture, which can negatively affect their body over time. Many dogs have chronically long nails because trimming them regularly becomes too stressful for both dog and owner. If it's time for a trim and you don’t feel able to do yourself, either ask your vet or groomer to do it. At the Spotted Dog, nail trimming is included as part of our grooming service. One of the most common causes of paw injuries is hot pavement, a regular occurrence of course here in the Algarve! At a 25 degrees air temperature the pavement can be as hot as 52 degrees, which is hot enough to cause severe burns to your dog’s paws. Obviously, it’s best to avoid walking your dog between the hours of 10 AM and 4 PM. When it’s hot, stick to shady areas. Always check the temperature of the pavement by placing the back of your hand against it. If it feels hot to you, it’s going to be too hot for your dog.

It’s normal for your dog’s paws to feel dry to the touch. If they are too soft and conditioned, they will not be well suited to protecting your dog from rough terrain. However, if your dog’s paws are too dry, they can become cracked and bleed. If your dog’s paws are slightly cracked, but not bleeding, ask your vet for a good moisturizer and use as directed. Avoid human hand moisturizer, as this can oversoften the pads and lead to problems. Foreign objects can become lodged in your dog’s pads. Check regularly between toes for grass seed, pebbles, and other debris. These pesky items can usually be removed with a pair of tweezers but if they’re embedded, take your dog to the vets. Similar to giving a human a hand massage, a paw massage will relax your dog and promote better circulation. Start by rubbing between the pads on the bottom of the paw, and then rub between each toe. Your dog will be forever grateful for the extra care and it’s a great way of getting them used to their paws being handled, making it easier to clip their nails and inspect their paws. When your dog’s paws are itchy, they’ll typically lick them, and you may see reddish brown discolouration on the fur between their toes. Itching can often be caused by food or environmental allergies. If the cause of the allergy is obvious, symptoms should cease within a few days of minimizing your dog’s exposure. When you are unsure of why your dog is itchy, you should see your vet. More information on caring for your dog and the benefits of professional dog grooming is available on our website at https://www. thespotteddog.net/. We provide professional dog grooming and pet care services throughout the eastern and central Algarve. Vaughan Willmore

ARTESIS Galeria

The brand new 'peoples' art gallery is located in the historic centre of the beautiful town of Tavira, just a few minutes from the main Rua da Liberdade and is the innovative creation of Ian and Sushma McIntosh.

I

an, from Scotland and French born Sushma moved from Marrakech to Tavira in late 2017, having decided to set up home here following a few trips around Andalucia and southern Portugal to find the right place. They rented houses in VRSA, Moncarapacho and Tavira but have now bought a small house here in the historic quarter. Appreciating how difficult it is for local artists to get access to good space to show their portofolio of work, Ian and Sushma decided to invest their time and money and create the Gallery with a new and fresh, yet traditional space. The gallery shows contemporary

10

work from artists living and working in the East Algarve. Current work includes ceramic sculpture, painting, mono prints, graphite drawing, jewelry and engraved stone. A selection of the work can be seen in photo albums on Facebook, which includes Ian and Sushma's work too. The general aim of the Gallery is to provide an exhibition and social space, primarily for emerging and developing artists who reside and work in the East Algarve, as well as greater opportunity to share their work with art lovers and collectors. ARTESIS offers a relaxing, comfortable and inspiring surrounding to view art work and

to share information about the artists, their techniques and inspiration etc. Also it aims to stir consciousness and help support a broad artist community in and around Tavira and share information to help local artists develop their name beyond the Algarve, and give them national and international exposure. The gallery is privately owned by Ian and Sushma and is provided rent-free and currently operates without any sponsors or financial support. Believing in full transparency of its activity and dealings with artists ARTESIS operates on a (low) commission basis and maintains simple administration to keep prices of art work reasonable, whilst also providing the artists value for their work and operates on a non profit basis.

Staffed by the artists, ARTESIS will exhibit a variety of modern art and new artists will be added periodically. The gallery will include a variety of works, focussing on modern art and can accommodate and encourages workshops by artists as well encouraging the use of the space for proposals to feature community exhibitions. A warm, enthusiastic welcome awaits you. Beth Jackson catches up with scientist Deborah Power

ou may remember Deborah Power, the eminent scientist, Professor of Biotechnology at the University do Algarve, Faro, with whom it was my pleasure to chat a few months back. We promised to pick up on our conversation, so I’m returning to a couple of subjects I found particularly interesting: the way ethics have developed in the scientific world of late; and a current project which fascinates Deborah, that of using micro algae in cosmetics. When I asked how the dynamics have changed within science since she worked on Alzheimers disease in the 1980’s, she spoke about ethical issues related to the use of human tissue for research. Deb: This, to some extent stemmed from the events surrounding the collection of tissue from Henrietta Lacks, an African American, who died of cancer in October 1951, in the USA. Cervical cancer cells were collected before she died and were found to be robust and prolific in cell culture and this was the first cell line to be well established for cell culture and because they are immortal, they are still widely used for scientific studies, for example I use them for some of the studies we do in my lab. The cells were harvested without consulting or requesting permission of the family and they have been used widely and continue to contribute to important scientific advances. The cells are known as HeLa cells after the name of the patient and following the

www.eastalgarvemag.com

convention of using the first two letters of their first name and first two letters of the surname. The family were very shocked and disturbed when years later they realised their mothers’ cells were being used worldwide and have become a very valuable commodity (if you want to know more I recommend Rebecca Skloot, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks). The case was taken to court and it induced a shake-up in scientific ethics worldwide. Beth: And I take it the Lack's family now receive royalties. Deb: They did not become rich, as they consented to the cells being a medical gift. But finally they gained the right to have a say in the use of genetic data. Beth: Something else caught my attention the last time we talked, if I remember rightly, something about the 3 R’s? Deb: That is “Replacement, Reduction and Refinement”. This is the basis of modern legislation for animal experimentation that is aimed at more humane animal research. The basic idea is to replace the use of animals by using in vitro cell culture models or equivalent and in this way avoid manipulating animals, reduce the number of animals to the minimum number feasible in experiments and refinement, by developing and using methods that minimise animal suffering. We are following the replacement model in our work with the cosmetics company, APIVITA, from Athens, Greece. Beth: Those campaigners against vivisection

really did succeed! When we talked before you mentioned “Assay” as an alternative way to research. I googled “assay” and got this: “An assay is an investigative (analytic) procedure in laboratory medicine, pharmacology, environmental biology and molecular biology for qualitatively assessing or quantitatively measuring the presence, amount, or functional activity of a target entity”….So what are you looking for? Deb: We are looking for Marine based compounds that are beneficial for skin (eg. anti-aging, anti-wrinkle, pigmentation spots on skin, even skin tone etc) and APIVITA that uses products from bees and other natural compounds in their cosmetic products is testing them. We are identifying interesting compounds using in vitro cell culture with skin cells harvested from unwanted tissue after human operations or with immortal cell lines, that just keep dividing and don’t die. We have one exciting compound from fish in the pipeline that seems to have a beneficial effect on skin regeneration. Beth: What, you mean that when they are writing claims on cosmetic packaging, they are not making it up? (laugh) Deb: It depends! Some of what you read you can believe but there are other things that are nonsense. If you consider that we are talking about a 532.43 billion US dollar turnover in 2017 you can understand the financial incentive! Beth: It looks like ethics still have a long way to go…

The Making of Mondo His name means 'world' in Spanish and he hopes his recycled sculptures will be a global success

W

hile others look at a discarded copper water cylinder or float waste pipes as things to throw out, sculptor Monda Pena sees huge possibilities. For Mondo old is beautiful and In the age of recycling, he is in keeping with the zeitgeist as the master of reinvention. In his hands a broken boiler is a giant ant with tree-like antenna. Pipes that once flowed with water are the strapping haunches of a life-size giraffe complete with lashes. Creating the extraordinary from the ordinary is his self-taught talent and that is what he has brought to Portugal along with his sculptures which have stood in his home

14

– Casa De Mondo in Bouliqueme until today. Born in San Francisco to a Czeck mother and father from San Salvador after whom he was named, Mondo first came to Portugal in 2001 with his wife Harriett and two children Dylan and Gia and was immediately smitten with the beaches, food and people. As a Californian boy he was always a surfer and when he left the States to live in London, there was always a part of him that longed for the rush of the tide. That absence was quelled in the Algarve where he found the surf and an old farm house that they have since converted into an idyllic haven filled with bi-coastal memorabilia and his menagerie of copper animals. “In Boliquieme, which we love, we feel close

enough to life but also far away enough to have space and quiet. Combined with the daily sheep who visit us!” says Mondo who is a trained plumber, thanks to his grandfather who taught him when he was just nine. The art, which came later in life, was born out of tragedy when Mondo was involved in a traumatic car accident which put him in a coma for four weeks “As I recovered I began to see things in a three dimensional way, he explains. It became a passion very quickly and I loved to create wonderful creatures.” In downtown San Francisco, otherwise known as The Mission, Mondo Pena was somewhat of a legend as the warehouse in which he and Harriett lived doubled as

www.eastalgarvemag.com

a welding studio. Surrounded by bars and clubs, those who frequented them preferred to watch Mondo work as he turned castoff copper parts into animals or bridges. “It all sparked from a point in my recovery when the lawyer working on my behalf inspired me to draw on that old cliché – lawyer as a shark – and make a set of shark teeth. But the case dragged on and so did the shark which grew into a fully anatomically correct life size Threasher.” At 17 ft the aforementioned giraffe is the largest piece Mondo has produced, but size is not an issue as he found the father embracing his family of four an emotive piece to make. “I love them all for different reasons and

www.eastaalgarvemag.com

actually struggle with the idea of giving them up, but my favourite sculpture to date was the one I sold in 2016 on a Channel 4 TV show in the UK. I would like to have brought that life size octopus here today.” The copper octopus which shone like a mirror caused a bidding war between the expert buyers on the show and the winner displayed his prize in Selfridges. Having sold other pieces in the USA and Europe –Mondo’s dream commission would now be to “design and create a play area for children with interactive art to inspire their imaginations or to put a piece of my art in a place that would make people pause in this hectic world we live in and put a smile on their faces.”

With materials sourced through plumbing scraps that he salvages from homes he has refurbished, Mondo is an enthusiastic recycler and he begins each art project with the image in his head and just keeps going. Currently welding outdoors “under the most glorious tree in my home in Boliquieme” Mondo is thrilled Art Catto has given him the chance to show his work in the Sculpture Garden. “As hosts at Casa de Mondo, we like to give others the chance to get creative and be inspired and in turn I hope to reciprocate by making something special for the Algarve which has welcomed me.” Contact: info@casademondo.com Facebook: 'Casa do Mondo'

Water in our hot tubs, swim trainers & pools

P

Ensure the water in your hot tub or pool has the correct pH levels.

ure water has a pH of 7.0 (neutral); however, natural unpolluted rainwater actually has a pH of about 5.6 (acidic). The acidity of rainwater comes from the natural presence of three substances in the air that the rain is in contact with on its way to the earth, carbon dioxide, nitrogen and sulphur dioxide, causing the acidity of rainwater! However by the time the rainwater has been in the aquifer or storage reservoir its pH will have changed depending upon the chemical makeup of the land, so here in Southern Portugal where the land is largely Limestone or Alkaline the water has a pH above neutral

The ideal pH for hot tubs, swim trainers and swimming pools is between 7.2 to 7.8 which is kind to our skin and the equipment too! So, why is it so important that we ensure that the water has the correct pH and is kept in balance? It’s healthy for our skin which is naturally designed to fight infection and environmental stresses and its ability to do so is affected by its pH level. The pH level of the skin refers to how acidic or alkaline it is on a scale of 1-14, with 1 being the most acidic to 14 being the most alkaline, 7 is considered a neutral reading for your skin’s pH. Our skin has a thin, protective layer on its surface, referred to as the acid mantle, this mantle is made up of sebum (free fatty acids) excreted from the skin’s sebaceous glands, which mixes with

lactic and amino acids from sweat to create the skin’s pH. Many factors can interfere with the delicate balance of the skin’s acid mantle but we are just talking about water, that innocuous substance that we relax, swim or play in and its ability to reduce the skin’s ability to protect itself. Therefore, it is absolutely vital that we check the pH of the water weekly or more often if used a lot and, as necessary, treat it to ensure that the pH is within the “ideal” range, this should be done in stages or a swing in the wrong direction can easily result, so when the pH is lower than 7.2 add pH plus and if the pH is higher than 7.8 then add pH minus. Then lie back and enjoy the result! Gavin at Algarve Hot Tubs

MY INVISIBLE

“W

e are the sum total of our experiences. Those experiences – be they positive or negative – make us the person we are, at any given point in our lives. And, like a flowing river, those same experiences, and those yet to come, continue to influence and reshape the person we are, and the person we become. None of us are the same as we were yesterday, nor will be tomorrow.” B.J. Neblett We, as individuals are created, formed, made, of two distinct mechanisms, that come our way, from the breaths we take during our lives. These mechanisms are; Memories and Experiences. Our personalities are then developed from these accumulated effective breaths we take and molecularly store, during these Memories and Experiences, offered to us, as we participate in the moments of our personal years, days, hours, minutes and seconds, of what we reference as, “Our Lives”. In the words of Daniel Kahneman, he explains that these moments are constantly being processed, stored, updated, within either, our REMEMBERING SELVES, or our EXPERIENTIAL SELVES. The Remembering Self or the Experiential Self, is the absolute foundation, that we

18

identify and measure, the connective dots of comprehension, in understanding our own personal “Happiness” What is required of us to be consciously aware, during these moments and thoughtful in processing the effect(s) they have upon us, as they are happening, creates the ability to witness these choices as they appear for us in the moment, to then implement the actions we take from these offered choices and the courageous, committed acceptance, we apply to those chosen actions, from what has happened, to and for us. What follows, in this writing, is an insight into the story of what happened for me, as I stepped upon, the beaten spirit, the mutilated body, of one invisibly wounded man. This Mother’s son, who later became known to me as, Francisco Jose Azevedo Brito and the remembered or experienced, opportunity, he created within myself, on the streets of Tavira, that June 10th, 2019 morning. These words are a call to action. Francisco is no longer an invisible Portuguese child. For he was seen and action was placed upon him. The Story As I lift myself over the curb, my gaze lifted from my mind and there, before me, on a bench, 5 meters from the taxi rank, sat a deflated human form. This human form

had collapsed into itself, left arm cradled, torso bent forward, head hung low, as if the soul was being siphoned out of it directly, immediately, before me, aborted of it’s spirit, this human form seemed. This is the moment, my Molly’s being came from within me and I, she, stepped forward. Francisco’s feet where badly burned, swollen from heat and infection. Flies where hosting on his flesh, the smell of dead meat pummelling my nostrils. His left hand supported by his right, it was grossly swollen. His clothes well soiled. His stench. I stepped towards this human form and tears of empathy poured forth. How can this be so, my mind questioned. Yet it was. I immediately went to the taxi rank and asked if someone could translate from English to Portuguese and ask the human form, that I knew was a man, if I could approach him and help? It was done and this human form, lifted his head and nodded yes. Never once making eye contact. Averting contact. This man was drained. His animal nature, cowering, beaten, alienated from hope. I ran home, got clothes from a close friend and returned. Placing the bag of goods on the bench beside him, I then took photographs and immediately went to the Pharmacy, where I was instructed to wash his feet, apply antibiotic cream and bandage the feet.

www.eastalgarvemag.com

FRIEND The gauze was free, the tape on loan and the fee for antiseptic cream, paid for. Having received a bucket of water and cloth from a nearby business, I donned surgical gloves and proceeded to administer care. Because of his injured arm, he was unable to remove his garments, he called out, I stepped in and changed him, between alternating involuntarily from retching, due to the body odour and the appalling effect of human waste fumes of urine and human waste ammonia to the eyes. As Francisco retreated to change his clothing, he asked that we turn around, as he had no underwear and did not want to be exposed in front of strangers. Take a moment to think about this. Wounded, beaten, soiled, his mobility severely handicapped, this man still held his dignity within his being. From an external perspective, no one would have expected this utterance. This attitude remained intact throughout our days together. He removed his hat when meeting officials. He thanked everyone along the way, when help was offered. The taxi drivers and I turned around, formed a human wall, securing a shield of privacy for him. I felt like a Roman Centurion standing alongside my Portuguese compatriots. Because of his injured arm, he was unable to remove his garments, he called out, I stepped in and changed him between alternating involuntary retching, from the body odor, human waste fumes and holding my breath. Helping him back to the bench, water and pear juice was bought, given and consumed in gulps. Francisco was instructed to take care of himself and notified that I would return in the morning to figure out what I could do next for him. The taxi drivers would keep watch for the remainder of the day, in fact, until well past midnight, they did. He was not alone. He managed a smile. That’s when I activated the power of Facebook, uploading images, imparting the words, that recounted what had just transpired. My mission had begun. I had committed to the unknown, this very moment I offered help. I was in for the long haul. The dominoes had began their synchronised fall, into and towards my experience. Later that evening I went to check on him. His arm was severely damaged, he made this clear to me. I purchased a blue arm sling for him and fitted it to his battered appendage. The breath of relief he expelled could have launched a kite into flight. A blanket was given, a taxi driver conveyed that I would return in the morning and that he was to stay safe and more importantly, to be there in the morning, as I would return. This was communicated by an eye to eye Maori understanding between Francisco and me.

"Ask not what they can do for you – ask what you can do for them".

Thus began, our behavioural conversation. Our monkey talk progressed into our own communicative dialogue. For some reason, he choose to call me Johnny and I called him Dumbo. Why? Just wait till you have a look at those ears. By evening I had already been contacted by a woman, Manuela, on FB. She was the first of the team to reach out, stating that she would assist in any way needed, agreeing to meet me at Mira Cafe the next morning at 9am. She arrived, right on time. Francisco was nowhere to be seen. We searched the streets of Tavira, within the city centre. Manuela left, ready to return, when notified. 15 minutes later a taxi driver stopped me and stated that he had just seen Francisco in the Tavira Garden. I ran. He was there. I phoned Manuela. She immediately returned, with her partner Paulo. They spoke with Francisco, assured him we were there to help and then the four of us set off across the old bridge, carefully escorting him to their car. Immediately to Tavira, Centro Saude we went. Without their immediate participation, it would have been impossible for me to navigate, all the official departments that where necessary to traverse, explain and accept the interdepartmental red tape that was required to get Francisco into and helped by the system. Francisco was admitted to Faro hospital. He now had three committed allies, by his side. My secret weapon was the crew of Taxi Driver spies. One went straight into Mini Preço and demanded that he not be sold wine. The boys had taken him under their protection. The word was out. On Friday June 14, Manuela, Paulo and I, return to Faro hospital to check on Francisco. There is confusion as to his whereabouts. Social services explain to us what happened, give us specific details. This nameless employee of the social services went over and above their job requirements and responsibilities. Francisco had asked to be checked out and driven back to Tavira. They told him he could leave, but no transport was offered. He chose to leave. Manuela, Paulo and I drive around the hospital vicinity for 45 minutes, looking, asking citizens, if they have seen Francisco. No luck. The three of us drive home to Tavira, in absolute silence. And then came Ellis. With her posters in hand, we pounded the cobblestones of Faro. We felt he was there. He wasn’t. But the ticket Agent at the bus station, informed us he had bought a ticket to Tavira, that very morning. He was first in line. She remembered his nose. He now had his four amigos. Then came Trudie and the private charity shop opening. Amalia with the runners. Ellis for the backpack. Geoff with clothing. Celia

with sunscreen. Pedro for locating Francisco. Victoria with the care package. Annemie for delivering them, with a migraine. Rafael for Tweeting out your reach. Ana for bringing the crutches from V.A. Sara for introducing Samuel Rodrigues and his Legal Council. Ana, Maria, Valter, of the Red Cross. My cousin Andrea and the over 550 people, who commented with words of support, on FB. I apologise for any omissions. To save time and space, I will now present a step by step checklist of what we had to do, over the next 10 days. A checklist that resulted in Francisco being accepted into a rehab facility, in the Algarve, for the next 4 months. If he wants to stay that long. If he truly can handle the structure and discipline required by the facility. My money is on him succeeding. He knows it’s his final chance. This is the last train out of Dodge. We all have a personal low, that most often needs to be reached, before action is taken. It is usually fear that motivates this decision. I believe Francisco’s fear was the fact that he could no longer fend for or protect himself. The streets are unforgiving. It takes strength to function and survive, no matter the conditions. Most animals find a corner to die in. Francisco, in my opinion, was nearing that corner. The problem was, he looked as if he could not even drag himself towards that corner. A victory for and by all. But you say that it’s only day 2. Correct. But every victory needs to be acknowledged, as this is the fuel, for the march we are upon.

19

People Tomorrow is a new day. We rise and meet it head on. With fire in our hearts and gentleness in our intentions. When you give someone or something value, then worthiness attaches itself. And when empathy and strength are applied to the mix, then physical miracles can happen. We all require support and validation. To reach for another has but a cost. My (the Author's) intention, in writing this essay, story, is to create a dialogue within the community, that workshops the theme of putting your attention on the other. Being present in a moment to moment timeline. Acknowledging the choices that are offered to you, by what has happened. To make conscious decisions. To Accept and Commit to those conscious decisions. To take action, propagates energy and force. For when you apply these mechanisms, you are now engaging in the Algorithm of Life. You have a system that allows you to take, no matter what happens to and for you, and therefore create an opportunity to form an experience out and from it. This is personal control of your life. YOU. So the question is this? What action do we take next? What do we do as a community do for the next Francisco. My idea is to create an Alert App. I would call

it MOLLY’S PLACE. Made available to all citizens of the Algarve, to start with. Do we have any programmers, developers, amongst us? Do we start a crowdfund to accomplish this? (https://www.gofundme.com/) An app, where we can instantly send out alerts, for the community to join forces in solving, assisting, locating, supporting those fellows beings that are not as fortunate as others. Similar to an AMBER ALERT. This discussion can take place within this blog application (https://53ninefilms0.wixsite. com/mollysplace), we have made available, to format and explore this discussion. Simply subscribe and begin expressing your thoughts. I thank you all in advance, for the time taken, in reading these words. The coming days will show what we have done to transform this happening, into an experience of our collective choosing. In words, similar to what Bob Marley stated; Every Woman, Man, Child, thinks their burden is the heaviest. Therefore! She who Knows it, Feels it. And he who Feels it. Knows it. Then we too, Know and Feel it. James Christie Walker Tavira, Algarve

ou are interested in buying a property but not sure about the condition of the property? Then it might be the right time to hire a surveyor. A house survey is a health inspection of a property that is carried out by an independent chartered surveyor. If you have an offer accepted on a property, it is recommended to obtain a survey report before purchasing the property. The surveyor is a person who examines the condition of land and buildings in a professional manner and provides a detailed report which includes information about visible problems and those that may be under the surface. The survey report provides an in-depth analysis of the property's condition and includes advice on defects, repairs and maintenance options. Most property surveys begin with a research into legal descriptions about the land they'll be surveying and its history. Then, the surveyor will actually visit the property and describe the land, its boundaries and all buildings on it. A detailed survey will tell you any problems or defects, like obvious rot, subsidence, a leaking roof or serious structural problems. The surveyor alerts of existing bugs in cane or wooden ceilings/floors, gives advice on the functionality and legality of existing boreholes and is testing the condition of any damp-proofing, insulation and drainage. He is providing results of tests for eventual damp in the walls. The surveyor also confirms whether all buildings match with the approved stamped building plans of the respective townhall. He normally also makes a valuation of the property and an insurance reinstatement value. So overall, he gives an expert opinion of the property, e.g. from the method of building, types of walls to the type of glazing and he gives recommendations for any further special inspection, if necessary. A property survey also includes to check out servitudes mentioned in the land registry document like right-of-way’s and easements. These are elements that detail what to do with shared driveways, shared boreholes or if a neighbour has a right of way to the road leading to your property. In the event that one or more of the abovementioned deficiencies exist and stay undetected, this could become a real nightmare and can become a drain on your financial health. If you choose to have a survey conducted before completing the sale, all issues will be listed in your report and you are able to raise questions, but you can

www.eastalgarvemag.com

also decide to maybe adjust your offer and undertake the work, or if there is a serious problem, even pull out. Alternatively, you might ask the seller to fix certain problems before you buy. As such, the report will give you peace of mind and may reassure you that small hairline cracks don’t mean the house is falling down. This is actually a common issue in the Algarve and is mainly caused by variations in temperature, humidity levels and small tremors. For new built properties, we recommend, as well, a professional snagging survey to be carried out. A snagging survey will identify defects or problems which need fixing before you move in. This survey will for example point out things that haven’t been finished properly. If the property is off-plan, try to get a survey done before completing the purchase. This way you will have more negotiating power to get any problems fixed and in a timely manner. In case the developer does not allow access to the property before completion get a snagging survey carried out as soon as possible after moving in. Please note: A mortgage valuation is not a proper survey – it is just a superficial look at a property to assess how much the property is worth in relation to the loan. It is required by your mortgage lender to ensure the property has sufficient value to secure the loan. Property surveys should be carried out by qualified surveyors. Most qualified surveyors are members of the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS). Survey costs can vary from company to company depending of the size and location of the property, but are normally between 400 and 600 Euros. Surveyors do often reduce their fee by carrying out a detailed inspection, but merely providing a short letter style summary, rather than a full report. Summary: The purpose of a survey carried out on your behalf is to enable you to make a reasoned and well-informed decision before proceeding to buy a property and to also take into account any repairs or replacements the property needs. For most people buying a property is the largest financial transaction they will make in their lifetime. Spending a few hundred euros on a survey to have the reassurance of an independent expert who is not involved in the transaction seems like a really good investment. If you need any further advice about buying or selling a property, contact us. Our friendly conveyancing team is here to help. The plot is full of fruit trees, such as orange and fig, and has stunning views of Fuseta and the Ria Formosa. The sea and Fuseta are both within a short walk. This would be an ideal holiday or rental property. A fantastic opportunity.

vone Ramos Domingues is the entrepreneur from Tavira whose family of retailers have travelled and lived in many countries such as France, Spain and Angola. Born in the majestic town of Tavira, from a young age Ivone learnt how to deal with all sorts of goods and importantly, the public. Her endearing personality and enthusiasm for travelling brought about the birth of her own company in 1992, with 5 shops in Tavira, 19 stores in the Alentejo and main warehouse located in Sines. Always in search of good quality and prices the Aroma brand brings 2 stores in Tavira which sell artisan crockery by the kilo. Aroma houses a diversified product of earthenware, terracotta and stoneware, with decorative pieces too, from table to oven in a wonderful array of colours, and available in contemporary, casual and traditional styles. The best factories are chosen and Ivone insists quality in all products, which are all made in Portugal, passing rigorous checks before export around the world. This maintains the highest of standards but prices ranging from only €1.99 to €7.50 per kilogram. There’s a superb range of articles low in weight, making it easy to bring home that special gift, to larger items which are beautifully functional to decorate your home. Ivone’s motto is “buy well to sell better”, and her company is “much more than just one person; it’s a whole chain of people from the suppliers to the people who work with me, I am very grateful to them all, choose a job you like and you will not have to work a day in your life”. Expect a warm welcome and a superb choice from Aroma. The business is a lifetime dedicated to buying and selling artisan goods and has pieces with details that will make a difference to any table. Gardens

Water conservation for the Garden With our increasingly hot climate it has become more and more important to keep an eye on the water that gets used in the garden.

T

here are many ways to save water in the garden, which will both help the environment and save on the increasing water bills. You can improve your soil by digging in lots of well-rotted manure or home-made compost every spring. The more organic matter it contains, the better it will retain moisture. If that sounds like hard work, simply spread a thick layer of compost across your borders in spring (while the ground is moist), and let the worms pull it into the soil for you. Help out individual plants by creating a wide planting hole and lining it with perforated polythene. Mix the excavated soil with plenty of compost or well rotted manure before backfilling it. The polythene liner will prevent water from draining away so quickly, and help retain more moisture at the plants roots. Don’t battle with planting moisture-loving

www.eastalgarvemag.com

plants on dry, stony soils. Instead, choose plants that enjoy dry conditions. Drought resistant plants often have specially adapted foliage that helps them to cope with water shortages. Look out for silver, furry, waxy or glossy leaves. Fleshy succulent plants and those with aromatic foliage are also telltale signs that a plant will cope well with water shortages. Mulches reduce water evaporation by covering the surface of your soil. Better still, they keep the weeds down and can look really attractive too. Always apply a thick layer of mulch between autumn and spring while the soil is still moist. Gravel, pebbles, bark chips make an attractive covering, while a layer of well rotted compost will help to feed your plants too. If aesthetics are not a concern, try planting through a sheet of polythene or landscape fabric. We all know about the environmental benefits of collecting rainwater, and of

course it’s completely free! Position water butts where they will be the most helpful. Site them behind the greenhouse, on the patio, or close to the vegetable patch, so that water is easily at hand whenever you need it. You can also collect grey water from the bath or shower to water your plants. Water in the morning before the heat of the day. An early watering routine will reduce water loss through evaporation, so your plants will get the full benefit of the water that you apply. Morning watering will also give your plants plenty of time to dry off before night fall, reducing the likelihood of slug damage and fungal disease. Don’t waste water wetting the foliage - always aim for the base of the plant. Add water retaining gel to the compost when you plant up your hanging baskets and containers. Another tip and can be cheaper is to line hanging baskets with disposable nappies, these have the same

39

Gardens

Patio containers always dry out quickly, but you can make your watering more efficient by choosing plastic or glazed pots instead of unglazed terracotta which is very porous. water retention crystals in them. These little crystals swell to create reservoirs of moisture that help to keep plant roots well watered all day long. Not all plants will need the same amount of water every day so you can afford to be selective. Your fruit and vegetable crops are worth the effort. You can keep those cool blades under your feet and save water by planting drought-resistant varieties. Bermuda and buffalo grass, for instance, require 20% less water than fescue or bluegrass. Keep grass long to shade roots and retard evaporation. Mow less often; and when you do, raise the height of your mower blade. Prioritise containers, hanging baskets and anything newly planted. Try setting up an automated irrigation system to help you target vulnerable plants. A really good soaking every few days (or when the soil becomes dry) will help plants to develop a deep healthy root system. Avoid watering lightly every day as this encourages the plant roots to grow near the surface of the soil making them much more vulnerable to drought. Patio containers always dry out quickly, but you can make your watering more efficient by choosing plastic or glazed pots instead of unglazed terracotta which is very porous. Group pots together

40

so that they can benefit from the shade created by one another’s foliage. Check that plants have not become root bound - large root systems require extra water. Transplant them into larger pots if

necessary to help the soil stay moist for longer. Keep on top of weeds in the garden as these will grow quickly and compete with your plants for valuable moisture. If we are water efficient we can cut the bills and save water you could use a rake, broom or outdoor blower to clean paths and driveways rather than a hose. Make sure all taps are leak free. One leaking tap can waste more than 2,000 litres a month. Use good quality hose fittings that won’t leak or break and waste water. In your pool and hot tub. We all love a dip in the pool in the barmy summer but this can lead to huge water bills if we are not careful. Use a pool cover or blanket to save water and money. It will keep your pool warmer, cleaner and cut down the water lost through evaporation. More than your pool’s entire volume of water can be lost each year through evaporation. Cover your pool with a shade cloth or sail to reduce evaporation Position walls, hedges and plants around your pool when landscaping, to create shelter and reduce evaporation from wind. Regularly check that the pool filter is working properly and the pool has no leaks, which waste water, no matter how small.

Readers Q&A

ver the last months we have received many questions from our readers, although some of these questions are related to specific situations, sometimes the answer may help you to better understand the tax system in Portugal and answer the queries from other readers. If you also have some questions regarding tax in Portugal, please feel free to send it to us. I have a small touristic business and would like to buy some bicycles for the use of my clients. Some of these will be electric and expensive and I would like to know if the VAT is deductible in these bicycles or not. The first condition for the VAT to be deductible is that you are not VAT exempt. Of course, that you can only deduct VAT on your purchases, if you are also paying VAT on the rentals to your guests. The bikes can be deductible if they are part of the package that you sell to your clients. If they can generate income, either directly or indirectly, then the VAT is deductible. This would also apply to the electric bicycles, for the same reason and also because there is no restrictions on the deduction of the VAT on electric bicycles. So even if you were just purchasing one electric bicycle for you to use either meeting business partners, suppliers, etc, the VAT would also be deductible. The only limitation to the VAT deduction has to do with the use and indispensability of this to the business activity, and this applies not only to the bicycle but to many other investment assets, including an electric car or an hybrid (plug in) car. Please note that although the VAT exemption is available for those businesses below the turnover of 10.000€ per year, it’s possible

Q

to renounce to this. In certain cases, this could be beneficial because the VAT on the accommodation and breakfast is just 6%, but most of the purchases have VAT at 23% (electricity, water, internet, management fees, accountancy fees, furniture, laundry, etc.). In many cases, this may result in a VAT refund. I just moved to Portugal from Switzerland in June last year. Do I have to file a tax declaration? Do I get any exemption on my pension? Yes, as you became resident in June 2018, you need to submit an IRS tax declaration with your worldwide income in the period June to 31st December 2018. In terms of exemption, there is a special tax regime called Non Habitual Residency. As a NHR, you can be exempt on several income streams from foreign source, such as pension or dividends. If you are still working as a sole trader, you can benefit of flat tax rate of 20% on your income. This is particularly attractive for taxpayers with high levels of income and also for retired people with private pensions. But please note that one of the criteria to be eligible for the NHR, is that you were not resident in Portugal, in the previous 5 years. In your case, although you met the criteria, you should have applied to the scheme no later than March 2019, as the application needs to be submitted after you become resident and no later than the end of March, of the year following your residency. We sold our property for 250.000€ in 2018. This was our primary residency and costed us 150.000€ in 2004. How much do I need to reinvest, in order to avoid paying capital gain tax? You have up to 3 years after the sale to make the reinvestment in another property that you chose as your new primary habitation. Or you

Q

Q

tlm:+351 281 029 059 email: info@allfinancematters.com

44

can reinvest in a property purchased up to 2 years, prior to this sale. This property can be located anywhere within the EU. If the new house you purchased has a price of 250.000€, the same as the selling price of the previous one, then you avoid the payment of capital gain tax. Please note that to avoid paying capital gains, you don’t reinvest the gain, you need to reinvest the full proceedings of the sale. If for instance you reinvest half, then you will pay half of the capital gain tax. This means that the tax will be due, in the proportion of the reinvestment you make. Me and my wife own an apartment in Olhão, which we rent out to tourists. The license is in my name and I am VAT exempt. In 2018 we were very close to achieve 10k in rentals and as we estimate that in 2019 rentals will continue to increase, can we meet to find a solution so that I continue with my VAT exemption? As mentioned previously, the VAT on the local lodging activity can be beneficial in most cases, because of the diferencial between the VAT on the income (6%) and the VAT on the exepenses (23%). However if you prefer to continue with this exemption, then our suggestion is simply to register the activity of Local Lodging in the name of your partner as well and had her name to the rental license (AL). This means that with immediate effect the rental income will be split between yourselves and the VAT threshold will be 20.000€ instead of 10.000€. This happens due to the fact that the VAT threshold is per person and not per property or rental license. Please feel free to send us the questions you may have to ricardo@allfinance.pt. We will select some of these to be published.

Expert financial advice By Andy Oliver, deVere, Portugal.

The Boris effect: what would a no-deal Brexit mean for the economy?

W

ith Boris Johnson looking like the next PM for Britain, it would seem a no-deal Brexit is imminent. But what would a no-deal Brexit mean for the economy and financial markets? The impact would show up almost instantly in the financial markets and a little more slowly in the wider economy. There would be three big things to watch with regard to markets: government-bond yields, share prices and the value of the currency. British government bonds are a safe-haven asset for traders and are also in constant demand from pension funds. Their prices should initially rally in the event of no deal, both because of a flight to safety by investors but also because the Bank of England could well be forced to delay increases in interest rates. The stockmarket could also rally. More than 70% of the earnings of the firms which make up the FTSE 100 index come from abroad. A big decline in the exchange rate, which is likely, would push up the sterling value of those foreign earnings. The share prices of British companies whose principal market is domestic (banks, for example) would sell off a bit, but they are already pricing in quite a lot of bad news. So, the impact would probably be fairly limited. Sterling is likely to be a different story. The day after the Brexit referendum in 2016, the pound dropped by nearly 10% against the dollar. Currently it hovers at around $1.27. Traders are banking on it falling to below $1.20 in the event of a no-deal Brexit. Some worry that it would drop further. Britain has a current-account deficit worth more than 3% of GDP, meaning that

the country as a whole borrows a lot more than it saves. Since the referendum Britain has largely financed its deficit not with longterm foreign direct investment, but with shortterm financial flows. That money can vanish in a trice, pushing down the pound’s value. A big decline in the pound would, over time, hit the economy. For one thing it would raise the cost of imported goods. A rule of thumb among economists says that a 10% fall in sterling eventually translates into a 2% rise in the consumer-price index. Were the pound to approach parity with the dollar, as some fear, inflation might rise above 5%. Inflation could rise for another reason, too. The erection of trade barriers between Britain and the EU might force consumers and companies to source more goods and services from domestic suppliers, instead of foreign ones. Suppliers of those goods and services would be unable to ramp up production quickly, so would instead raise prices. Higher inflation would cause immediate pain for those in receipt of working-age welfare payments, most of which are frozen in cash terms from 2016 to 2020. It would also trim the purchasing power of salaries. That would be a bitter pill for Britons, whose wages are already worth less in real terms than they were before the financial crisis of 2007-08. With consumer spending accounting for two-thirds of British GDP, shrinking real wages would probably damage overall economic growth. The offsetting hope would be that the fall in the value of the pound spurs exporters. Yet the evidence from the aftermath of the referendum suggests this would be unlikely: exports have grown more slowly than in any other G7 country. And in the event of a no-deal Brexit,

ADVERTISE YOUR BUSINESS HERE! 46

the EU would impose tariffs on British exports: cars would face a 10% tariff, for example, rising to 40-45% for lamb. Some industries could be killed off. Whether the economy would fall into recession, defined as two consecutive quarters of negative economic growth, is unknowable. About a quarter of Britons actively desire no deal, according to polls; these people might actually boost their spending. As British companies scramble to rewire their supply chains, there might also be a short-term boost to investment spending. A downturn however cannot be ruled out. If that looked likely, both the Bank of England and the government would be forced to intervene, but neither could do very much. Interest rates are already near an all-time low of 0.75%, and the inflation rate is already near the central bank’s 2% target. The government, meanwhile, could in theory decide not to pay its £39bn “divorce bill” with the EU, and use the savings to boost public spending. But Britain’s ratio of public debt to GDP is already around 85%, a level which might be expected to rise if economic growth slows. It cannot go much higher without investors starting to worry about Britain’s fiscal sustainability. The British economy, in sum, would need to weather a no-deal exit without much help. With the potential cliff-edge that is Brexit, it is a good idea for international expats to review how their investments, assets and pensions are structured. For the best results, explore your options with a deVere Portugal financial adviser who specialise in cross border cases. They can help you establish the most suitable approach for your personal situation and objectives.

Get fit for golf! Hit the Gym?

N

Of course fitness is important in golf, however 'fitting' is as crucial, gym not so!

o, I’m not a Personal Trainer nor do I sell gym memberships. In fact I hate the gym and if I needed to do regular circuit training to be good at this game I probably wouldn’t play. I’m talking about getting your clubs fitted to your swing. There’s a famous quote from Winston Churchill that goes something like “golf is a game that involves hitting a small ball into a very small hole with weapons that are illdesigned for the purpose”.....we can all relate to that as we fail yet again to get our 4 iron off the ground, stripe our drive into the trees or flub a simple wedge shot. As for Mr Churchill it would seem even our great savior would have benefited from a fitting session. He might then have said “ golf is a game, that if you’re using clubs that are built and adjusted to suit your own individual swing, becomes a whole lot easier and much more fun”. So here’s the question. How much of a

difference to your game can a session with me at Clubtec Golf make? I can tell you....it can make an enormous difference, and the difference can often be immediate! Every month I work with clients, adapting, changing and adjusting their clubs. I see them shooting lower scores, improving their skills, and gaining much more enjoyment from playing this great game. So what is it that Clubtec does to help clients play better golf? Well of course there are many things that we do at Clubtec. Fit grips, replace broken shafts, refurbish tired looking clubs and sell additional equipment. I do everything that you’d normally expect, but where I can make a real difference is helping you play better golf by adapting your clubs (often your existing set) to YOU. I determine the changes after meeting and taking a look at your current clubs. There’s the opportunity to spend time with me on the range to study how your equipment

performs, and then your clubs are tested, measured and analyzed, to determine exactly what it is you’re using, where they suit you, where they don’t. We try different options, shafts, weights, lofts, different lie angles, shaft lengths, grip sizes, all the time looking for things that help you get more out of your game...and I find them. Customers always tell me they come to realise that there’s so much more to a golf club than a grip, a shaft, and a club-head, and how amazed they are that a number of small changes can make such a big difference. From this testing I very often make up a small number of test clubs for you to take away and try....on the course, in competition, wherever you want, where it really matters. Once, after a few days and you’re sure that you see real improvement, then I get down to the business of building those changes into your equipment. Simple, straightforward, effective.....and no sweat!

ENGLAND INTERNATIONAL WALKS TALL! All the latest sports news from Chris Wright.

undreds of senior citizens have benefited both physically and socially by participating in Walking Football since it started in the Algarve almost five years ago. Girding loins and strapping up creaking joints has become a weekly feature in Tavira (Mondays) and Olhão (Tuesdays age 60+: Thursdays). Many teams from the UK have flown in, to challenge the all conquering East Algarve Walking Footballers, including Tommy Charlton, younger brother of England legends Jack and Sir Bobby and more recently comedian Jason Manford, given special dispensation due to his young age! A regular player is former FA Cup Final winning captain Brian Kilcline who led Coventry to victory against Spurs in 1987. Another first for EAWF was the recent appearance of Newcastle United’s international star Jonjo Shelvey at the José Arcanjo Stadium in Olhão. Many of the elderly players could never imagine performing with a Cup Final winning captain let alone an England international and current Premier League player. Jonjo began his career at Charlton Athletic, becoming their youngest-ever player at 16 years and 59 days old. In 2010 he moved to Liverpool for £1.7 million where he was part of a Liverpool squad which won the League Cup and lost the FA Cup final in 2012. Three year ago he was transferred from Swansea to Newcastle for £12m where he has made over a hundred league appearances. A busy autumn EAWF programme will include visits from the Bicester Fossils (Oxfordshire) and the Danish Prostate Survivors team, who will be enjoying the EAWF hospitality for a second year.

Booming the Draw Chris Truter, resident professional at Quinta do Vale

H

i and welcome to the Pro Tip with Chris Truter. For this Pro tip we are going to look at everyone’s favourite topic, POWER! While increasing clubhead speed is often a difficult and gym bound task, learning to maximise your distance from the tee by hitting a power draw is far simpler. You can appreciably increase your driving distance just by getting the right shape on the shot. Most importantly, with a power draw the ball always has a bit of topspin, meaning that the first bounce is powerful, shooting forward off the deck and rolling out further than ever. Firstly it is important to understand how we impart the correct spin to the ball. Simply put, if the face of the club is closed relative to the path of the swing, the ball will have draw spin on it. In other words, if the face of the club is looking straight down the fairway and the path of the swing is heading towards the right side of the fairway, the face is closed relative to the path. Simple right? As an easy to imagine example, watch Rafa Nadal play one of his banana special forehands down the line. He swings the racket out towards the crowd, but rolls his hand and wrist over to put the sidespin/topspin on the

52

ball. The ball starts out wide and then curves back into the court. We can then understand that the shot we are looking for will start down the right side of the fairway, and then draw back towards the center with plenty of topsin and roll. So, you ask, how we do achieve this magical shot? Well, follow these simple instructions and the power draw is yours for the taking. With plenty of practice of course! Alignment and stance are absolutely fundamental for the boom. We have to get set up correctly for this shot. Without the right foundation and aim you’re more likely to end up playing a provisional instead of a wedge into the green. First set up square to the target, with the clubface and body aimed down the center of the fairway. Then you want to move your left foot a couple of centimetres forward, and your right foot the same amount backwards. At the same time narrow your stance by a couple of centimetres. This will align your body down the right side of the fairway. Make sure to keep the clubface aimed down the center of the fairway! Now the real trick here is the position of the right foot. The right foot? Yes, the right foot! It’s that simple. Normally you’ll have your

right foot perpendicular to the target line, but on the booming draw you want to have your right foot turned open around 20 or 30 degrees. This allows for two things, firstly you will be able to rotate your body further on the backswing, letting your shoulders aim to the right at the top of the backswing. Secondly the right foot being open will slow down your rate of rotation on the downswing, keeping the slice monkey in check and making it easier to release the arms and wrists through impact. Also, the right foot being open gives you an invaluable visual aid to help swing to the right. Swing where the foot is aiming is a simple swing thought. It allows you to swing inside out, booming the big draw down the fairway for more distance than ever! So there it is; aim straight then shuffle slightly to the right keeping the clubface aimed down the center, open your right foot so that it aims further to the right, then swing down the line of your right foot. The ball will start out right, then curve back in towards the center with plenty of pace and power for drives like never before.... Good luck!
