Keeping with the theme of change, this month we re-introduce the Pink Flamingo bar Tavira, which has now become 'Ferry Point Bar'. We attended the launch of a new lifestyle and cookery book in Santa Barabara de Nexe 'The Purple Carrot', and also visit a brand new Crazy Golf course just outside Tavira to meet Mike and Julie. As we are in the height of summer we thought we'd show you some of the changes happening in Manta Rota... look out for the new one way system if you're driving!

News Vila Real de Santo António row over parking meters continues

he normal business of the Municipal Assembly of Vila Real de Santo António had to be postponed due to the number of locals who turned up to protest against the city’s new parking meter scheme.

The meeting, which was scheduled to start at 21:30 on 26th June was delayed for 15 minutes to see if the angry crowd would calm down, which it did not.

The prospect of extending the parking meter zone to a total of 1,800 spaces in the city centre has enraged many locals and traders and yesterday’s 200 or so protesters shouted phrases like "we do not pay!" and the Algarve’s current favourite, "the people united, will never be defeated!"

The protesters included city residents and shopkeepers, and some to the many commuters who come to VRSA and work in the centre of the city.

"I live in the area just outside the pay zone. It’s already difficult to park now, imagine going forward. I am not a second class citizen and I too want to park," said one resident who would not qualify for the 'three free parking passes' exemption and who feared cars filling up the zone just outside the paid and display city centre.

Many traders fear that the paid parking will deter customers from VRSA's city centre and hence from leisurely browsing in their shops.

"Before, people parked, walked around, had lunch, shopped... now, with parking meters we don’t know how it will go. Certainly people will not shop for so long," said one storekeeper.

The assembly was postponed to decide on a new location, one that will accommodate several hundred people, according to council president, José Carlos Barros.

The council wants to ratify the 30 year parking meter deal with Estacionamentos à Superfície e Subterrâneos whereby the company pays €400,000 up front to the council and ‘never less’ than €15,000 a month.

First Aid posts for 32 of the Algarve's top beaches

he setting up of summer first aid posts was such a success last year that the Regional Health Administration is running the scheme again.

32 of the Algarve region’s beaches will have first aid posts from this Monday June 29th to the end of August, from 10:30 to 19:30, although at seven very popular beaches the service will run until 13 September.

Injuries from falls, bruises, fish and spider bites, heat stroke, sunburn and other problems resulting from overdoing it in the sun were some of the problems last year that were dealt with on site in the special first aid posts which again will operate in cooperation with the Portuguese Red Cross.

These beach-based posts offer nursing care where trained staff can sort out a range of basic clinical situations on site. If further care

is needed the user is taken to the nearest clinic or hospital.

Since 2010, each of these first aid posts have had a phone link to the Emergency Patients Guidance Center at the National Institute of Medical Emergencies so that additional professional advice can be given and hospitalisation arranged, if need be.

The seven beaches where the service will be extended to September 13 are Rocha Baixinha Nascente (Albufeira), Quarteira (Loulé), Ilhas do Farol (Faro) and of Tavira (Tavira), Praia da Rocha (Portimão), Armação de Pêra (Silves) and Monte Gordo (Vila Real de Santo António).

This is a welcome scheme which assures beach goers that help is at hand should they need it, while reducing the pressure on hospital emergency services during the peak summer season.

anta Rota is a small village which is very popular with the Portuguese in high season and longer-term renters in the winter months. Part of its attraction is the huge long beach that can be reached on foot, and its charming selection of Portuguese restaurants and café bars. In the summer months there are activities at the beach as well as market stalls and open air entertainments in the evening, but out of season, Manta Rota is a sleepy hollow! There is a good

choice of restaurants, all of which can be recommended, and which vary in style of cuisine and price. The village is compact and has within easy reach a supermarket, butchers, bakers and newsagent. Overall, it’s fair to say that there is not much else in Manta Rota – which is probably the reason why people who holiday there love it – ‘simplicity is divinity’! – Manta Rota is the ideal place to experience a typical Portuguese holiday, with only the beach for company during the day.

MANTA ROTA BEACH Access to the beach has just undergone a total transformation. The road down to the main carparks has been pedestrianised, creating a 'boulevard'. can be reached easily on foot or by car. There is no need to take a boat ride as it is here that the lagoon of the Ria Formosa finally comes to an end! The car park can get quite busy in high season though. The beach offers amenities including sun beds, shade and some water sports in high season. There are also a couple of excellent fish restaurants to try. For those who enjoy walking, the coastline is long and easy to navigate with the neighbouring resorts of Praia Verde and Monte Gordo all within around 30 minutes walk.

Leonardo Leopoldo

n June 9, 2015 our dear friend Leonardo passed away aged 86. We were truly privileged to know such a positive and inspirational man, and honoured to have been regarded as his true friend.

Born in San Francisco on 29th July 1929 Leonardo worked and lived in over 40 counties spending 29 years in 13 Islamic countries as an International Freelance Photo Journalist. He spent 12 years in The Oasis, Amun Siwa, Egypt from 1989 to 1997 with his partner Social Ethnologist Bettina, as well as 9 years working in Israel. He settled in “magical Tavira” in 1999

where he happily grew “too old”, but so very happy. His life had been a “fantastic journey”. Leonardo practised daily love, tolerance respect and forgiveness. His faith in Tantras meditations overflowed and he inspirationally encouraged enjoyment, fulfilment and to be yourself; the biggest, most powerful, unique and beautifully happy person that you can be.

His great wisdom and guidance was a gift and his positivity and young and fun outlook to life left everyone he met quite elevated and driven.

He loved music and life, a wonderful man whom we miss very much.

One of Leo’s favourite quotes:

"All major religious traditions carry basically the same message, that is love, compassion and forgiveness.

The important thing is they should be part of our daily life" His Holiness the Dalai Lama.

So as we say farewell, I can't help the tears from falling. In my head I've had many conversations with Leonardo since he passed. Each time I've cried, and each time he's smiled in the way only he could, and asked why I was crying. I tell him I miss him, to which he replies "OK, but if you're gonna cry, cry for yourself don't cry for me. I'm so lucky, I've had a wonderful life!"

We were delighted to be invited by Mike and Julie who came up with idea to create something new and

fun last April. On the 1st June after lots of hard work and planning they opened the course. Mike and Julie originally from the UK have lived in the East Algarve for 25 years and have now created a space that both the local community as well as visitors can enjoy together.

Julie and Mike explained that for some time the large site had been empty. After much hands on work and determination you will now find a challenging fun area to play, complete with all you need, clubs,

balls and score card. Together with a cool and stylish area to relax in (the 19th hole), non players can watch in comfort and competitors can rest after playing. Enjoy a soft drink, ice cream, glass of wine or an ice cold beer, all available as you compare your score cards. Soon light snacks will be available too.

avira’s stunning brand new promenade is now open and provides a beautifully scenic walk along the River Gilao.

From the old market in the town centre to the high bridge over the river, a gentle stroll will allow you to take in the fabulous views of the historic city and the marina home to the brightly coloured, traditional working fishing boats. Works began in February 2015 and after some inevitable delays (this is after all Portugal) approximately 250.000 euros has been invested in this project.

Ferry Point Bar (formerly the Pink Flamingo) is still under the same ownership; Rich and Ange, and after hesitating for some time they decided to change the name and sign writing of the bar to keep it in harmony with the new stylish look of the area.

Now together with Luis, Jake and Sophia, Ferry Point Bar is open during the Summer months all day from 10am. The Bar serves ice cold beers, coffee, soft drinks, wines, international liquer and the speciality, mouth watering, handmade cocktails to order. know we are biased but there is nowhere better in Europe than the Algarve in summer! Miles of golden beaches and a warm inviting sea, empty golf courses, beautiful nature walks, bustling restaurants serving the very best and freshest fish, washed down with a chilled glass of local white wine and of course the glorious daily sunshine. By investing in a property in the Algarve, this could be your routine.....but is it the right time to be buying a property?

Algarve property prices since the end of 2008 had been continually realigning themselves but since early 2014 they settled at what is deemed to be much more accurate and realistic values. It is no secret that the prices reduced by approximately 30 - 40 % compared to the listing prices of 2008. The panic sales and the undervalued property sales that were prevalent up to about 18 months ago have, for the most part, been sold and as such the foundations for growth are now firmly re-established.

The Algarve´s appeal as a solid investment for property purchases has most certainly gathered pace once more. Safety in the garden A Keeping children and pets safe in the garden

s families enjoy their garden together this summer, it’s important to recognize that our families are more than just parents or guardians and children. For most of us, those families include pets, we own at least one dog or cat. There are many other homes that have outdoor rabbits, guinea pigs, chickens, or even larger animals like sheep, goats, or horses.

Keeping these furry (or feathered) family members safe in or outside of

the home is always a priority. While gardens are lovely for relaxing, they can pose risks for our animal companions if proper precautions are not taken.

Here are a few summer reminders to keep everyone happy and healthy: POISONOUS PLANTS Take a look at your plant list and use care when selecting new plants for your garden or yard. Many popular and easy-to-care for outdoor plants can be harmful for animals; several of

them may be common in your area.

Rhododendron, azalea, lily of the valley, and foxglove are toxic for cats and dogs and affect their heart.

Here are just a few that can affect animals and children.

Small amounts of cooked vegetables such as pumpkin, carrots, broccoli stems, and green beans add healthy antioxidants to your dog’s diet. Families that raise chickens for meat or eggs will find that these birds are an excellent help when you don’t know what to do with leftover or overripe produce. Chickens are voracious eaters of cabbage, tomatoes, zucchini - and well, almost

anything! Make sure to check with your veterinarian before making changes to your pet’s diet.

MULCH AND COMPOST Providing a safe outdoor space for kids and animals is a top priority when gardening. Compost piles can be full of exciting and interesting smells for our pets. Remaining food scraps, rotting fruits and vegetables, and coffee grinds are great for decomposition, but can be poisonous for animals. Keep your compost in a secure container

Gardening or fence off the pile to prevent it from being an attractive “snack” source. Cocoa mulch, a by-product of chocolate production, can be a problem for dogs. It’s widely used by landscapers for the familiar smell and color. Unfortunately, dogs also love it for the same reasons. Depending upon the amount, if ingested, cocoa mulch can cause a range of digestive problems, even seizures. If you have pets, stick to shredded pine or cedar mulch—even hemlock bark is a safer alternative. These alternatives aren’t entirely “non-toxic”, so if you’re using mulch in your yard supervise your animals to ensure their safety.

FERTILIZER AND INSECTICIDE Using fertilizers, insecticides, herbicides, ant, snail, and rodent baits are always a challenge in the family garden. Baits for snails and rodents are the most dangerous for pets, although even allowing animals onto a freshly fertilized lawn can cause burns on sensitive paws and skin. Following the recommended guidelines is absolutely necessary, take the time to read the manufacturers label.

Always store these items in a locked, inaccessible area.

Consider ways to reduce the amount of chemicals used in your garden. This

will have an environmental benefit, as well as contribute to the health and safety of your family and pets.

GARDEN TOOLS AND ORNAMENTS You may have never imagined that your garden ornaments would look like a great toy or attractive food source, but occasionally animals will ingest just about anything. From garden gloves to gnomes, give your garden an inspection for items that could be eaten, or even broken causing a danger to animals and children. Paws, noses and eyes that are close to the ground can be injured by unseen garden tools like rakes, hoes, and trowels—even

short, decorative fencing can be very dangerous if an animal may become impaled on the object. Animals are also susceptible to tetanus so clean up and store those garden tools and check with your veterinarian to see if a vaccination is available for your pet.

LAST, BUT NOT LEAST Remember to keep your pets out of other people’s gardens. Not only will this make your neighbour happy, but it will keep your pet safe from unknown dangers. Also, put your pets in the house when mowing the lawn or trimming edges or shrubs. This will keep your animals calm and safe from objects which may become a projectile when combined with power tools.

Taking care of children and pets and keeping them safe is a daily consideration.

The garden should be a place of enjoyment and relaxation, not a spot for apprehension and worry. By following a few simple guidelines, you can establish a safe place in your yard. Spending time with your family, including a healthy, happy pet, is one of the best summertime activities.

If in any doubt your child or pet has injured or ingested anything that you feel is of danger, take them straight to the vets or hospital..

Long Term Rentals: new rules to landlords

015 has been a year of many changes for those who have properties for rent. One of the main changes involves the obligation of landlords to have to issue electronic receipts for monthly income tax through the Tax Portal (Portal das Finanças).

This law came into force on May 1st, however the tax office has given more time to landlords to adapt to these new requirements. Thus, landlords may continue to issue receipts for income on paper and will not be fined, providing they re-issue all these receipts on the tax portal, before the 1st of November.

But this is not the only change that landlords face in 2015. Landlords are, from this year, obliged to notify the Tax Authorities of leases and subleases, as well as any changes to these contracts or when they finish.

This possibility is also already available on the Tax Portal and if you just rented your property for long term and plan to register the contract as normal at the local tax office, please note that this is no longer available and the registration of the contract needs to be done electronically. Also landlords will

have to check at the Tax Portal if their current rental contracts are registered and if not, they should do so by November, to avoid any fines.

Electronic receipts required for incomes above the 69.87 euros Landlords who opt for category F (long term rents) and have an annual incomes higher than 838.44 euros (ie 69.87 euros per month) are required to issue monthly income electronic receipt by the amounts received.

Exemptions to the new obligation Landlords who have received less than 838.44 euros from rent in the previous year and have no electronic mailbox are exempted from this obligation. December 31st of last year, were over 65 years. Although older than 65 are exempt, they may opt to issue electronic receipts and if so, shall be subject to the general rules issued by this route.

Electronic receipts The completion of this e-receipt is done at the Tax Portal, following the procedures that are listed on the portal. Income receipts are issued in duplicate, and the original is with the tenant and the duplicate with the issuer. The electronic receipts are available on the Tax Portal for four

years, so if you want to refer to them, simply go to 'site' and can see the history of the last two years.

You can also cancel an electronic receipt income, but to do so, the issuer must submit the cancelation prior to the deadline for the submission of the yearly tax declaration.

Paper receipts until November The electronic receipts have been available on the website since May, however landlords can continue to use paper receipts until November without having to pay a fine. Once arrived in the month of November, landlords must pass the electronic receipts of the months between January and October, together with the receipt of November. Our suggestion is that you don’t leave it until November to start issuing electronic receipts.

Annual reporting of revenues Those Landlords exempt from issuing electronic receipts are however required to submit to the Tax Authorities by the end of January of each year, a statement with the breakdown of category F income of the previous year.

This should be done by the end of the month following the start of the lease, sublease, change, termination, etc. Where there is more than one landlord, the statement may be submitted by only one of them, with proper identification of the remaining owners. If there is room for settlement of stamp duty, this will be made following the submission of the contract. When this is finished, you issue a single billing document that proves the payment of the tax.

Good times for Portuguese football

or such a small nation Portugal has consistently produced good, young footballers who are much in demand by top teams throughout Europe. Lionel Messi and Barcelona may have won the Champions League and Jack Wilshere may have scored two stunning goals as England beat Slovenia but it was that goal scoring machine Cristiano Ronaldo who grabbed the headlines with yet another hat-trick as Portugal beat Armenia 3-2 in Yerevan to maintain top spot in their Euro 2016 qualifying group. After slotting home a first-half penalty Ronaldo then nipped in front of Arzumanyan to chip the ball over the top of the advancing Armenian keeper Berezovsky for number two and then hammered home a rocket of a shot from some thirty metres for his hat-trick. The ferocity of the strike stunned the home crowd in a way that only Ronaldo can do, a masterpiece of a goal from the maestro. Cristiano Ronaldo, with twenty-six goals to his name, is the all time leading goal scorer in European Championship games.

Portugal then played a friendly against Italy in Geneva and won 1-0, without Ronaldo, to record

their first victory against the Italians for 39 years. Southampton captain José Fonte earned his fourth cap and was the pick of a very solid defence. All eyes were on the European Under21 Championship finals in the Czech Republic when Portugal and England met in their first group game. Portugal included the much fancied 23 year-old William Carvalho. Players can be 23 years old by the time the finals tournament takes place; however, when the qualification process began (late 2013) all players would have been 21 or under. Carvalho is an Arsenal fan, but it was a call from Manchester United’s Nani

that persuaded him to sign for Sporting Lisbon a decade ago.

Both teams want Carvalho - he was most impressive in the game against England - in their ranks but will have to cough up in the region of €50m to secure his services.

Carvalho, older than most of his team-mates, tormented England’s midfield, but that was a role reversal for the player who has been used to mixing it with those far older than him from a young age. Filling in the missing pieces

everal years ago I became aware of the untimely death of Benfica player Luciano Jorge Fernandes back in 1966. The story starts in 1964 when the young defender had an outstanding game playing for Olhanense against Benfica in Olhão on a dirt pitch which is where the shopping centre now stands. His efforts had helped to keep the score to 1-0 in favour of the Eagles. A remarkable achievement given that the forward line of José Torres, José Augusto and the greatest player of his era Eusébio, scored 103 goals in just 26 league matches that season.

club but on the 5th December 1966 tragedy was to strike as he and six other players were using the club’s hydro-massage bath. An electrical fault resulted in Luciano being killed instantly whilst the other players, including Eusébio, survived thanks to the action of Malta da Silva who managed to get to the power supply and switch it off. The front page of ‘The Times’ next day quoted one of the survivors Domiciano Cavém, who was born in Vila Real de Santo Antonio, “we were in the bath when we felt a paralysing electric shock which appeared to come from an underwater massage apparatus.”

levins Franks recently staged their first FootGolf Challenge at the Colina Verde Golf and Sports Resort at Maragota near Moncarapacho. The majority of invited guests were playing for the first time and notched up some surprisingly good scores on the twelve hole course. The premise of FootGolf is simple, instead of using clubs and a golf ball, players use their feet and a football. A special hole, to take a football, is located on the fairway adjoining each green. Former Liverpool and Blackburn Rovers footballer John Waddington lead the way as his team of Viv Donoghue, Sue Whitaker, Roy McCrudden and Mark Quinn took the team trophy.

She proceeded to show me photos of her uncle and I was able to give her a facsimile of the front page of ‘The Times’ from nearly fifty years ago. So it was that my broken tooth lead me to fill in another piece of the jigsaw as I research the impact that the Algarve has had on Portuguese football.

Cup final star joins walking football group

rian Kilcline who was captain of Coventry City when they won the FA Cup at Wembley in 1987 is the latest recruit to join the Over 50s Walking Football group at the José Arcanjo Stadium (behind McDonalds on the EN125), Olhão. Coventry shocked the football world by beating favourites Tottenham Hotspur 3-2 after extra-time. Every Thursday between 20 and 30 mature figures, some who had never played football before joining the group, don their kit for action on the 5-a-side astro-turf pitch. New players are always welcome even if it is only for one or two games whilst visiting the Algarve.

high lob shot is a high risk shot to be used as a last resort when all other options are not available such as chipping and pitching. When executed properly the shot can be used to access tight pins flying over obstacles with the aim to stop the ball close to the hole as quickly as possible by increasing trajectory not spin.

The shot is played from a distance shorter than a pitch shot with no curvature and also a higher trajectory than a standard pitch shot. Use the most lofted club in your bag such as lob wedge or sand wedge to assist in maximising the trajectory. Aim the clubface slightly to the right of the target to increase the loft of the club therefore increasing trajectory, take your normal grip (grip will now be 'weak' in relation to the new clubface aim) thus delivering the club to impact with an open clubface. Align your shoulders parallel to the ball to target line with your stance and hips slightly open (aimed to left for right handed golfer). By adopting a wider stance, distributing your weight 50/50 and having the ball positioned forward of centre creates a shallower angle of attack through impact increasing the trajectory of the shot. Distance is controlled by the length of back swing, however ensure to accelerate through impact to a position mirroring the backswing.
