Official traffic figures for the Via do Infante
raffic volume on the Via do Infante (A22) in the Algarve decreased by 57% between January and March 2012. This period is the first full accounting period for the Institute of Road Infrastructure (InIR), since the introduction of tolls on December 8th, 2011. According to the latest report from the Institute of Road Infrastructure (InIR), the A22 had an Average Daily Traffic (ADT) in the first quarter of 2012 of 5,588 vehicles. In the first quarter of 2011, without
and fatalities are higher on the EN125 and other secondary roads, than the same period last year." "The situation will deteriorate dramatically on the EN125 with the arrival of summer and the end of the toll exemptions - the EN125 road queues and chaos will be unbearable." The commission also voiced criticism for MPs elected by the PS, PSD and CDS that "have systematically voted in Parliament against the suspension of tolls on the Via do Infante" despite opposing them face to face.

tolls, the traffic rate was of 12,889 vehicles daily. The government still has not made available any figures for the amount of free journeys taken by residents with transponders. Supporters of anti-toll group Cuvi gathered in Armação de Pêra, Silves, to analyse the impact that the introduction of tolls is having on the Algarve and the regional economy. The committee reported that in the first quarter, traffic accidents and serious injuries "more than doubled
otel guests in Vila Real de Santo António (VRSA) are to be charged a tourist tax to help towards the upkeep of the city’s sports complex, an infrastructure the council says is vital to the competitiveness of the area as a tourist destination. The Câmara says the Complexo Desportivo, through sporting and cultural events held there, is a tourist magnet and contributes towards increased hotel occupancy levels in the area. However, the €3 million the council spends annually to maintain the infrastructure is proving too much and the creation of a taxa turística applicable to hotel guests in the area will help relieve the financial burden. VRSA Câmara says those levels of investment, made solely by the council, were responsible for the rising number of athletes and sporting organisations
choosing the destination for training camps and competitions, such as the ‘Mundialito de Futebol’, the ‘Copa Foot 21’ or the European Champion Clubs Cup (Athletics). These events are said to result in each user of the sports complex spending an average of a week’s accommodation in hotels units in VRSA. “Not only do we invest in an appealing sports calendar, but municipal funds are also spent on developing a programme of regular cultural events that have continuously attracted interest from visitors particularly in the low season,” stated a spokesman for the Câmara. For this reason, the council felt it was important to share the financial responsibility of promoting the city’s main attraction, which has played “the biggest role in raising tourist occupancy in the area”.
So from the end of this summer, all tourist accommodation units in the VRSA council will include an additional fee to guests bills, which will average €1 per overnight stay per person, except children under the age of 10. Part of the funds collected from the ‘tourist tax’ are to be used in promotional campaigns both nationally and internationally. VRSA Mayor Luís Gomes said: “The payment of this symbolic amount, a measure already in place in other European cities, is crucial under the current economic climate.” The mayor also added that any hotel bookings made prior to the announcement of the tourist tax would not incur the charge. A public discussion on this measure is currently taking place. Those wishing to take part in the debate should contact the Câmara on 281 510 005

5 health problems caused by computer use
D
Health expert Gareth Bullock explains highlights the dangers of working for long periods at a computer.
o you spend a long amount of time working, reading, playing and generally searching for things on the computer and internet? Do you ever stop and think your eyes are dry, your neck hurts, your child hasn’t moved all day and you yourself have been sat there for several hours without taking a break? Do your children spend all their free time playing and staring at the bright screens? Yes of course they do, we all do, that's the way it is these days! But what is that doing to our health? There are serious risks involved with prolonged computer use and here are the top 5. “Turn them off, get outside and play” is what I say...! Eye Disease Prolonged computer use could be linked to glaucoma, especially among those who are short-sighted. Our eyes are very badly affected by how long you stare at that bright screen. We stop blinking and start staring which makes our eyes strain and dry out. Make sure you look away from the screen and close them for a few seconds every few minutes. Bad Posture Check your posture regularly! You should be able to reach the keyboard and mouse whilst bending your elbows at 90 degrees, with your shoulders relaxed. If you
8
are stretching, this could cause problems. Your back should be straight and the top of the monitor should be just below eye level. If your monitor is to the left or right of your keyboard you are putting strain on your neck. Long periods of time at the computer while often leads to pain in the lumbar region of the back. Neck and shoulder problems also result from poor seating and the poor organization of equipment on the desk. Hurting Hands Your hand and wrist ache after working at the computer all day, and they sometimes start feeling numb. Research in recent years has found that things like typing and sewing rarely cause carpal tunnel. Wear splints while you work to keep your wrists from bending too high or low, and use a keyboard tray or adjust your chair so the keyboard and mouse are below your elbows and your wrists are level. It is really important to give your fingers, wrists and hands a break from resting on the keyboard all day. A tennis ball is a great way to do this. Every time you need to think you should grab the ball and give it a few quick squeezes. This will do wonders for your joints and muscles. Computer Stress Injuries Many people suffer from structural
problems related to the physical stress of sitting incorrectly, or for too long in front of their computers. So there are chances you’ve experienced a fair amount of computer stress, from minor frustrations here and there to a virtual visit to computer hell. High levels of stress can kill you! Highly stressful workers have a higher risk of developing heart diseases and even cancer. So make sure that you can manage your stress. Taking frequent breaks is an important step in preventing repetitive computer stress injuries. Cyberchondria This is a condition that people have when they continuously look up medical advice on the Web for every ache and pain. There is so much medical information available, and it is so easy to jump from one article to another that one can easily find a horrid disease for every symptom. Self diagnosing and treating can cause longer, more serious health issues, so it is always in your best interest to confirm what you suspect with a health professional. You would not gamble with your life earnings and buy a house over the internet without checking it 100%, so do not gamble with your health. Sun, sea and Massage 1
Massage reduces waste products such as lactic acid & carbonic acid that build up in muscles after activity and cause cramping, discomfort, and irritability. It also enhances the immune system and aids recovery from soft tissue injuries by increasing blood circulation to injured areas. Massage dilates or opens up blood vessels, improving the circulation and relieving congestion. Massage also increases the number of red blood cells, especially in cases of anemia. Massage acts as a “mechanical cleanser” pushing along the lymph and hastening the elimination of wastes & toxic debris. Massage helps to eliminate edema (or dropsy) of the extremities through lymphatic massage. Massage increases the blood supply and nutrition to the
2 3 4
muscles without adding to their load of toxic acid, produced through voluntary muscle contraction (such as exercise). Massage thus helps to overcome harmful “fatigue” products resulting from strenuous exercise or injury. Massage improves muscle tone and helps prevent or delay muscular atrophy resulting from forced inactivity. Massage relaxes muscle spasms and relieves muscle tension. Massage may have a sedative, stimulating, or even exhausting effect on the nervous system, depending on the type and length of massage treatment given. Transverse massage (a therapeutic massage technique) separates muscle fibers, undoing or preventing the formations of adhesions. Massage stretches connective tissue, improves its circulation and nutrition so that
5 6 7
it breaks down or prevents the formation of adhesions, and reduces the danger of fibroids. Massage can compensate, at least in part, for lack of exercise or muscular contraction in persons who because of injury, illness, or age are forced to remain inactive. In these cases, massage helps return venous blood to the heart and so eases the strain on this vital organ. Massage improves the circulation and nutrition of joints and hastens the elimination of harmful particles in the synovial fluid. It helps to lessen inflammation and swelling in joints, thereby alleviating pain. According to some authorities, massage may burst the fat capsule in the subcutaneous tissue so that the fat exudes and becomes absorbed. In this way massage, combined with proper nutrition and exercise, can aid in weight loss.

An Algarve wonderland "I don’t think they play at all fairly," Alice began, in rather a complaining tone, "and they all quarrel so dreadfully one can’t hear oneself speak - and they don’t seem to have any rules in particular; at least, if there are, nobody attends to them ..."
Words Chris Wright
S
o wrote Lewis Carroll, an early croquet enthusiast, in Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland where a hedgehog was used as the ball and a flamingo as the mallet, while soldiers doubled over to make the hoops. The Algarve has flamingos, hedgehogs and soldiers but it also has a wonderful new venture on its doorstep, the Bela Romão Croquet & Country Club just off the EN125 near Fuseta. Where and when croquet had its origins no one knows, but it first evolved as a society recreation in Ireland during the first half of the nineteenth century, then trickled quietly into England in the 1850s and took the country by storm in the early 1860s. Historians are generally agreed that the game’s phenomenal success was that it provided the first opportunity for men and women, young and old, to compete outdoors on equal terms. And the timing was right. The mechanical lawn mower, invented by Edwin Beard Budding in 1830, was now widely available, allowing the maintenance of fine turf. Some 150 years later the Bela Romão Country Club Croquet Lawn has become the first official lawn in the Algarve. With its stunning aspect, looking down over the sun kissed golden beaches of Fuseta and Armona Island, the surroundings form an oasis where people can relax and enjoy a very special experience. Sarah Byrne, an Institute of America Chef and Maitre D’instructor, oversees the venture and the Baltizaar Clubhouse offers a wide range of international snacks and tapas. The swimming pool and petanque court are surrounded by lush gardens and shady arbours. Quinta Mariala is owned by London based Portuguese solicitor Lita Gale who became hooked on croquet while in Florida and California. She and Sarah have created the Bela Romão

Myths Regular contributor Chris Wright elaborates on Myths and legends pertaining to local land marks in and around Tavira.
I
s the young woman standing on the roundabout outside Tavira railway station waving her soldier off to war or greeting him on his return? Neither is true. The statues, erected in 2001, are a memorial to Tavira’s long military history. They also symbolise the many thousands of young men from all over Portugal who did their basic military training in the town particularly during the Africa Wars (1961-74). Liaisons were quite common with the local girls who bade their soldiers farewell as they started their journeys back home. Many young men emigrated during this period and the population of Portugal actually decreased!

Country Club as a non-profit member-only club with the objective of promoting Croquet in Portugal. Lita said, “We welcome everyone and would urge people, young and old, who have never played the game to come and have a go.” David Denman, an enthusiastic and accomplished player, is regularly on hand to provide advice and coaching: “We need more players so that we can challenge groups from overseas to do battle with us here at Bela Romão. Despite what Alice in Wonderland said, we do have rules and it is a very sociable and exciting sport.” For further information on membership of Bela Romão, go to: www. belaromaocroquet.com or contact Sarah Byrne: 289 798 254 or email: Portugalcroquet@yahoo.com The Portuguese Croquet Federation website is: www. portugalcroquetfederation.com
Croquet facts As one of the few sports where men and women play on equal terms, croquet afforded young Victorian men and women opportunity to mingle out of the shadow of chaperones. Croquet reached the South Pole in 2005 when American scientists became the first to play a game there, in the snow, outside the South Pole Observatory. Rapper P Diddy held a croquet party in May to celebrate becoming the first rap performer to be given a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Croquet was a one-off Olympic sport in 1900 – although it was so poorly organised that one competitor went to his death without ever having known he was an Olympian. Pictures of then Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott playing at his official residence, Dorneywood, in 2006 while supposedly running the country, prompted a 300 per cent surge in sales of croquet sets at Asda. The game of Croquet invented by John Jaques II in 1851 has spawned many variations, including ‘extreme croquet’, where the smooth lawns of the 19th century are replaced by a rugged landscape of streams and potholes whilst two million people play Japanese 'gateball’, a sort of five-a-side speed croquet.

After informing Buckingham palace about the event, Lady Susan Hussey replied on behalf of her Majesty to wish us a good day and to thank us for our wishes to THE QUEEN. his month I was fortunate enough to be invited out on a kayak tour of the Ria Formosa. It sounded great, but I didn't fancy paddling in the hot sun to be honest. So hurray, the good news was that I didn't need to! All you have to do is just sit back and pedal and enjoy the sights of the Ria Formosa nature reserve, including a lot of bird and marine life, fish incredibly jump out right in front of you! Just to explain a little, Hobie kayaks are pedal-powered craft, imported especially into the Algarve for your enjoyment. The pedals work some simple, but effective, underwater flippers - and that's what propels you along on your Algarve

kayak trip. It is a very efficient mode of propulsion, as my non-aching legs bore witness! I was met by Steve and luis, who set us all up with life-jackets, showed us where to stow our belongings on the support craft and the kayaks we were to be using for the day. Steve addressed our group with an introductory talk about the workings of the kayaks: foot pedals and fins, rudder, and hand-held paddle/ oar, together with the procedure of landing the craft. Once we all headed out, we stayed close to the beach accustomizing ourselves to our kayaks. I followed Steve in the support boat, with the others in a line behind. It wasn't long before we were able
to test our skills over the shallows, taking the foot paddles out of action and paddling manually. After a short time, we stopped, beaching at the very end of Ilha de Faro, just before the channel opened out into the ocean. Drinks and melon were provided and all our questions were answered about the wildlife and marine life. We were encouraged to venture over the sand dunes to the Atlantic side to see the views back to Albufeira, Quarteira, Quinta do Lago with the impressive hills as the backdrop. After navigating past the entrance to the Ria Formosa, we glided along the water at a steady 4-5 knots to the beginning of Ilha Deserta which is now a natural lagoon. The lagoon was

crammed with birds, big and small. There were many sandbanks and rock pools in which to see the marine life. Just before we came ashore, a flock of pink flamingos swooped across the entrance to the Ria Formosa and did a fly-past some 100-200 metres away before heading away to their favourite gathering place near Quinta da Lago. Next stop was the main one... Lunch was provided, and we had plenty of time to explore the lagoon, try out a different craft, or go off on our own. Some of the more adventurous of the party tried the kayaks with sails. Steve then took us across to a sandbank, some hardy types wading up to their chests, others being ferried in a tandem kayak. Once

there, we were able to see sea slugs, hermit crabs of all sizes, oysters, limpets and sundry other marine creepy-crawlies. It was fascinating, the more so because Steve was so knowledgeable about many of the wild and marine life-forms we encountered. Shells were a must to collect; large, multicoloured and of tremendous variety. After a picnic lunch ,which was most welcome by this time, we got our second wind ready to explore the lagoon some more and then make our way home, accompanied by the local herons. We kept up a good pace, as Steve rounded up the stragglers and guided us across the entrance to the Ria Formosa. Those who were

feeling a little tired or needed help got a tow back. It was a great day out, just as Steve had promised, our legs did not ache at all. A real commendation for the comfort and ease of the pedal-propulsion. I would advise wearing a swimsuit under quick-drying stuff like shorts and tee-shirt. Take a towel, sun cream, lip protector, sunglasses and a hat. Binoculars are a bonus, camera a must. Keep a change of clothes in your car should you want to shower and change before you head home. Steve's Kayak Tours run half-day and full-day trips all year round. It's a great day out for The whole family. f you are reading this article you either own a property in the Algarve or could be interested in owning one in the future. In any case you are spending your summer holiday in Portugal which indicates you like being here, and who wouldn’t? The Algarve is still one of the best holiday destinations in the World, has some of the most beautiful beaches of Europe with over 3000 hours of sunshine per year and is only a short flight away from home. Much has been said about the ill thought-out introduction of toll system for the A22, the bailout programme, austerity measures and the subsequent deep recession in Portugal. Unemployment is still high - adjusted for seasonal demand during summer – and is expected to remain high well into 2013. But there are also glimmers of hope. From an economical point of view Q1 in 2012 saw an increase in exports and an improvement in the Balance of Payments (although still negative). Europe’s sovereign debt crisis is still in full swing and the magical word nowadays is growth - economic growth - to get out of the crisis. But with many countries

EmailPremier-painter @hotmail.co.uk and households deleveraging, end demand remains weak making exporting your way out of recession difficult and without additional measures, unlikely to succeed. Portugal is at least going in the right direction and is being hailed for staying the course of adjustment and reform. The deficit reduction targets are within reach after a year of tough austerity measures agreed as part of the bailout programme. Despite Portugal’s progress, it seems EU officials are planning for a 2nd bailout package for Portugal due to high borrowing cost. With yields on Portugal’s benchmark 10 year bonds remaining well above 10% it is unlikely Portugal will be able to return to the market for its financial needs in 2013. Another glimmer of hope is coming from the property market with transaction volume up since the beginning of 2012 although it still is very much a buyers market. Some areas that experienced a mini building boom in the past still suffer from an overhang of unsold newly built properties, which will remain so for the foreseeable future as it seems that neither builders nor banks are willing or able to adjust to current market prices.

When looking abroad, there are also pockets of strength in Europe which seem unaffected by the crisis. Property prices for prime locations in London are higher than before the crisis started in 2008 and there are signs of a mini boom in the German property market too. Berlin is very popular at the moment and not to mention the lofty property prices in Sylt, a small island in front of the coast.
been viewing properties for years. I guess one can only postpone a lifestyle decision to own a property for a limited amount of time; after all we do not live for ever. At least with an investment in traditional brick and mortar you know what you own. Your ownership can not be diluted against your will, nor will you be confronted with a haircut. And if all else (financial system) fails, you can at least live in your property or have someone paying you for the Another glimmer of hope is coming privilege. If you are planning to purchase a from the property market with property and have been waiting for prices to come down, transaction volume up since you should best register your interest as soon as possible the beginning of 2012 with your estate agent instead The ultra wealthy are not much of waiting for asking prices to come affected by an economic downturn down further. The prices of real which explains why property prices bargains are often not advertised for for prime locations such as in various reasons, and you could be London are buoyant. But now foreign losing out on some of the best deals buyers are returning to the Algarve on offer. too. Annuals add splashes of colour to your garden all year long, but you must choose plants that are suited to your climate in order to have lush, thriving flowers.
M
any gardeners that have a hot and dry climate to deal with often shy away from colourful annuals as they think they will not do well without constant watering and will require too much maintenance. There are, however, many annals that love just such a climate. The list below is a sample of annuals that can take the heat. The list below shows annuals best suited for hot and dry climates and when they have established a rooting system they are quite tolerant to dry conditions. African Daisy (Dimorphotheca) Annual Vinca (Cataranthus roseus) Calliopsis (Coreopsis tinctoria) Cosmos (Cosmos species) Creeping Zinnia (Sanvitalia procumbens) Dusty Miller (Senecio cineraria) Gaillardia (Gaillardia pulchella) Globe Amaranth (Gomphrena globosa) Gloriosa Daisy (Rudbeckia hirta) Gold Medallion (Melampoddium paludosum) Moss Rose (Portulaca grandiflora) Snow-on-the-Mountain (Euphorbia marginata) Spider Flower (Cleome hasslerana) Verbena (Verbena species) Zinnia (Zinnia species)

Heat seeking varieties of annuals Annuals in the list below are generally able to tolerate very hot conditions, but they do usually require additional moisture. Blue Daze (Evolvulus glomerata) Castor Bean (Ricinus communis) Cockscomb (Celosia argentea) Cypress Vine (Ipomoea quamoclit) Dahlia (Dahlia species and hybrids) Fan Flower (Scaevola aemula) Flowering Tobacco (Nicotiana species) Four o’clock (Mirabilis jalapa) Hyacinth Bean Vine (Dolichos lablab) Joseph’s Coat (Amaranthustricolor) Mexican Bush Sage (Salvia leucantha) Mexican Heather (Cuphea hyssopifolia) Mexican Sunflower (Tithonia rotundifolia) Moon Vine (Ipomoea alba) Morning Glory (Ipomoea species) Salvia (Salvia species) Silk Flower (Abelmoschus manihot) Starflower (Pentas lanceolata) Sunflower (Helianthus annuus) A combination of the varieties of annuals listed above can be great choices for those people living in hot, dry climates. These heat and drought tolerant annuals provide a
wide variety of colours, sizes, shapes and textures, enough to meet the needs of any gardener. Even with annuals that like a hot, dry climate, gardening in such conditions can be challenging. Water restrictions can thwart the efforts to provide adequate moisture to your plants so you need to be cognitive of the usual restrictions in your area. No matter what your climate, matching the types of flowers you plant to the climate in which they will be growing is one of the best ways to ensure a healthy garden and a healthy environment. Annuals provide season long colour to your garden and can be started from seed or purchased pre-grown from your local garden centre. Most types of annuals can be started right from seed by using seed boxes. Start your seeds indoors in well drained soil and make sure they have plenty of light as well as enough water. After the seedlings have gotten a good start indoors, they are then replanted outside in the garden. For those who do not want to grow their annuals from seed, seedlings can be bought directly and transplanted immediately. This approach is generally more expensive, but it provides a quicker
33
Gardens time between planting your flowers and enjoying them. When it comes to putting our annuals in the garden, make sure they are planted with the tops of the roots just below the soil surface. If you have bought pre grown plants, make sure that the entire container is removed along with any paper or plastic. If our seedlings are in peat pots, then remove the top edge of the pot before planting. If the seedlings have any buds or flowers on them, they should be pinched off when the seedlings are planted. This will promote greater branching and help the plant grow stronger. After the seedlings have been transplanted, the plants should be given a good watering. It is particularly important to provide lots of water in the first few weeks, since the plants are still developing their root structure during this time. It is essential to provide adequate moisture to get the plants off to a good start. Even after planting, most annuals require from 2.5 to 4 cm
of water every week to thrive. With even more water may be needed in very hot climates. Annuals need to establish a deep root system and they can only do this if they receive sufficient amounts of water. Deep root growth comes from thorough and deep watering and will produce lush thriving plants. The best methods for achieving this deep and thorough watering are soaker hoses and drip irrigation. In addition, these methods of watering avoid water splashes on the foliage, which can serve as pathways to fungal infections. Another important aspect to healthy annuals is proper mulching. Mulch the bed before you put the plants in with 5 to 7.5 cm of pine bark or pine straw. Mulching serves to conserve the moisture contained in the soil and to reduce the growth of weeds. A good layer of mulch will shade the seeds of weeds and prevent them from sprouting. Mulch provides a natural form of weed control and thereby eliminates the need for
hand weeding or harsh chemicals to control the growth of weeds. Different annuals have different fertilization needs. When you buy your seeds or plants, find out what those are and make note. Then during the growing season make sure you provide the fertilization that is necessary for each type of plant. One of my favourite plants to grow in a hot climate is the African daisy which is the name commonly used to describe a group of different bedding plants. All of which come from South Africa, sport a mass of daisy-like flowers (unsurprisingly!), and require similar conditions to grow successfully. Daisy flowers, typical of the Asteraceae botanical family, create a clear mood and design direction. They appear out of place in lush, tropical settings, typified by plants with massive leaves and large garish flowers. They are more suited in my view to the sparser, restrained style of a Mediterranean, dry climate garden. At least three genera answer to

Gardens the name of African daisy, with a number of species and varieties belonging to each genus. These are Arctotis, Osteospernum, and Dimorphotheca. All are hardy to light frosts, are fairly pest resistant, and must be grown in well-drained soil. While requiring regular water through the long hot summer, they do best, especially in heavy soils, with deep, occasional irrigation. Therefore, in their cultural needs, as well as in design terms, they associate better with Mediterranean type plants, than with tropical or sub tropical ones. All need full sun to flower. Arctotis hybrids The most common Arctotis found in gardens are hybrids that grow 30cm (1ft) high and wide. The foliage varies according to the variety from a dull green, to bluish-grey. The leaves are slightly rough and hairy. The symmetrical flowers are some 7cm (3in) wide, in shades of white, pink, yellow, orange, and red. Arctotis is most effective when massed as a ground cover, but is not to be relied
on in cold-winter areas or boggy soil. The plants tend to become bare and leggy, so regular clipping is essential. My suggestion is to prune away the flowers even when about 25% remain on the plant. Osteospernum fruticosum This is a trailing plant to about 25cm (10 in) tall, covering about a meter in width. It is somewhat course and untidy in appearance, and so is unsuitable for small, intimate niches. It can be excellent though in spaces where a sprawling look is in order. The flowers are very similar in shape and size as those of Arctotis, coming in purple or white. To maintain bushiness, regular clipping is important, as is the occasional cutting-back to growing points towards the woody base of the plant. This should only be carried out during the growing season. A taller version of this African daisy is Osteospernum ecklonis. There are a number of varieties of this species available, most notably the relatively compact “Passion”. This variety has
pink, purple, or white flowers, with sky blue centres. Dimorphotheca sinuata This African daisy, sometimes known as cape marigold, is a fine annual for warm summer, and mild winter climates, creating a lovely floral display in white, pink or purple at the end of the winter and the spring. It could however, become invasive in certain areas. African daisy plants associate best in the flowerbed with plants belonging to the same botanical family; the similar flower shapes creating unity in the garden composition. Excellent companions for them amongst others are Felicia, Bidens, Chrysanthemums, Gazania, and Brachycome. Now I hope this helps with some ideas for you to create that extra piece of colour in your garden, and remember don’t be afraid to try any of these annuals in your flower beds, because with the right plants your garden will have a bright vibrant feel all summer long.

Keeping track of local pond life in the regions unhospitable dry and hot climate
Studying the Algarve's amphibians
A
mphibians (frogs and toads, newts and salamanders) require moist conditions and freshwater to breed in. Consequently, Mediterranean climates, with their long hot and dry seasons, present them with a great challenge. Nevertheless, amphibians do occur in these areas where damp places with freshwater exist such as around ponds, lakes or streams. This localised existence means, however, that they are very vulnerable and entire populations or even linked populations can be easily wiped out by development or by water pollution (for example by agricultural chemicals). Amphibians are made more susceptible to environmental threats by the fact that they are all too easy to overlook; they are often inconspicuous and generally nocturnal. Torchlight surveys The Alvor Estuary area of Portugal, where A Rocha has its field centre at Cruzinha, is rich in amphibians and over the years, twelve species have been recorded: two species of salamander, two species of newt, four
36
toad species and four species of frog. Yet regular systematic surveys of amphibians have not been undertaken so far. In March 2003, Alan Preece carried out the first amphibian surveys in the area, partly to see how any such regular systematic surveys might be undertaken in future. Amphibians were surveyed using the "torchlight technique," checking potentially suitable water bodies with a high-powered torch shortly after sunset. Nine water bodies, including ponds, ditches and large puddles, were surveyed. The amphibians found were recorded and the salinity and temperature of the water measured at each locality. The three species which were found during these surveys were Perezi's Frog (Rana perezi), the Natterjack Toad (Bufo calamita) and Bosca's Newt (Triturus boscai). Perezi's frog (formerly classified as the Marsh Frog) occurs across the Iberian peninsula and into the south of France. On the survey, it was seen in four of the ten water bodies, often in some numbers. It appears to be common in the Alvor area and even when
it could not be seen, its calls could be heard. This species can apparently utilise most types of water available, and was even present in water that was brackish. The survey period (1418th March) appeared to be part of the breeding period for this species as a pair were found clasped together ("in amplexus") indicating imminent spawning. The Natterjack Toad has a distribution across western and central Europe, occurring throughout Portugal. It was widely heard calling and was found in shallow puddles on a night following rainfall where it too was seen breeding. The Natterjack Toad has a specialised reproductive strategy that relies on such short-lived pools. Bosca's Newt is similarly widespread across Portugal, but is otherwise found only in western Spain, being endemic to the western Iberian Peninsula. A single specimen was found in a ditch. Future work Surveying amphibians effectively is difficult. Amphibians are most easily found in the breeding season when

they tend to be more visible and are present in suitable water bodies in higher concentrations than at other times. The "torchlight technique" is fairly effective but suffers from two problems: torchlight surveys of heavily vegetated sites are relatively unproductive, and the charge on the high output torches that are used has a limited life which reduces survey time. Studying the calls that frogs and toads make, particularly during the breeding season, can help in defining their abundance and location. Each frog and toad species has a specific call and can be identified on this basis. During this study, Natterjack Toads were successfully identified and located at a distance of at least 500 m. Unfortunately, newts and salamanders are silent and cannot be located this way. One other way of determining what species of amphibians are present, and one that works outside the breeding season, is to identify their refugia.
38
Refugia are those protected sites, often under the cover of rocks and logs in shaded and damp areas, where amphibians can survive the hot, dry summer of the Algarve. Searches of refugia do however pose problems; at best, valuable microhabitats are disturbed and at worst they, or the animals they contain, are destroyed. Good environmental practice dictates that if refugia are disturbed by their covering rock or log being lifted up, this should be done in such a way that the cover can be restored to exactly where it was. Any animals found underneath the cover should be removed before it is replaced to avoid being crushed and should then be released next to the refugia so that they can rebury themselves safely. Care should also be taken during refugia searches as they may also contain venomous animals such as snakes or scorpions. The next step in any systematic study of amphibians in the Alvor Estuary area will be to prioritise those water bodies that are amphibian rich so that they can be regularly studied. This will be done by eliminating the higher salinity water bodies and highlighting preferred breeding sites by mapping frog and toad calls and noting the presence of egg chains and clumps ("spawn"). Studying amphibians poses particular problems; yet, if a case is to be made for the preservation of these creatures in an area, then as much as possible
about their abundance and diversity needs to be known. **** Alan Preece can be contacted at adpreece@lineone.net More details on the amphibians of the Alvor area can be had from A Rocha Portugal: portugal@arocha.org

Journey To The Economic Center Of The World Pictures speak louder than words – economic activity shifts towards the East (ZeroHedge.com on 06/29/2012)

he most recent decade of 2000 to 2010 has seen the fastest rate of change in the global economic balance in history. During this period, a recent McKinsey research article notes, the world's economic center of gravity has shifted by about 140km per year - about 30% faster than in the period after World War II when global GDP shifted from Europe to North America. The world’s center of economic gravity has changed over past centuries. But since the mid-1980s, the pace of that shift— from the United States and Europe toward Asia— has been increasing dramatically as China is urbanizing on 100 times the scale of Britain in the 18th century and at more than 10 times the speed. One has to wonder what the difference would be were it not for the flawed economic model adopted since the 1980s that relied

The center of economic gravity is calculated by weighting national GDP by each nation's geographic center of gravity. They then draw a line from the center of the earth through this center of gravity to the surface. Ed’s Note: We are trying to put a perspective on the scale of the problem that we are facing here in the Western world. Every day we read about more corruption in the monetary system and more money being printed to keep intact the power structure behind those responsible for the corruption. We, as a family learned that when you lose a loved one, you have to let them go before you can begin to heal. Now, our banking system is dead, their debt-based reserves have dissolved as house prices collapse and the derivatives constructed around them implode. Let them go! fter a highly successful eighth place finish in Portugal's Premier Football League, the Olhão based club are looking forward to more of the same. A mixture of experience and new, young signings augers well for an exciting season under Sérgio Conceição stewardship. 33 year-old Olhanense captain Rui Duarte has put pen-to-paper and signed a contract that will keep him at the club until 2014 while 35 yearold centre-back Mauricio has also signed a new twelve month contract. Midfielder Nuno Piloto has signed a twelve month extension to his contract. Piloto was seriously injured in November last year but is now fully fit and could be an influential member of the squad. Leaving is the fans favourite Djalmir who has been a great servant to the club including a hat full of goals in the promotion season of 2008-9. Ismaily has gone to SC Braga and centre-back Mexer to Madeira side Nacional. NEW BOYS ON THE BLOCK Promising central-midfield player Elvis Macedo Babanco has signed a two year deal. The 26 year-old Cape Verde international was with 2nd Division side Arouca last season. President Isidoro Sousa has been in discussions with FC Porto, Sporting Lisbon & SC Braga regarding the possibility of
extending the loan of André Pinto, Wilson Eduardo and Fernando Alexandre. José Mourniho was on vacation in the Algarve at Ferragudo recently and contemplating making an approach for the 40millon euros rated Manchester City and Spanish international striker David Silva but it was Portuguese Premier Liga side Olhanense who actually signed David Silva. But this David Silva comes on a free transfer from Scottish Premier League side Kilmarnock where he made 45 appearances over the last two seasons scoring four times. The 25 year-old winger started his career at FC Porto and has also plied his trade in Bulgaria and Spain. The accomplished midfielder Cauê could be on his way to SC Braga whilst Vinicius may be moving in the opposite direction. Olhanense own 30% of Cauê’s contract. ALENTEJO TRIP PROVES A BIG HIT Over a hundred Olhanense members and friends had a wonderful day-out at Monsaraz high in the Alentejo as guests of CARMIN Monsaraz. The Back-swing
Another top tip from resident professional at Benamor Golf, Keith Ashdown.
In this picture you see me with the club in the 9 o'clock position in my back-swing, notice that the grip end of the club is fairly low to the ground. This shows that the hands are following the movement of the club-head, rather than the hands and arms taking the club away. At this point in my backswing you can see that there is not much hip turn, my legs are relaxed and there is only a slight shoulder turn. This all happens because my body is following the movement of the club-head and not leading it.

At the top of my back-swing notice that my left hip has not moved across to the right, my body has stayed centred and I have rotated around that central position. From this position I will be trying to feel that I am throwing the club-head down towards the ball making sure that I release the energy created in the back-swing in order to generate the maximum club-head speed at impact. My follow through will be an unconcious reaction to that energy being released before, rather than after impact.
