...to your June issue. This month we meet the owners of Beira Rio, a fabulous restaurant in the centre of Tavira, and hear from the owners of Quinta Fonte do Bispo and how they came to move to Portugal, to take over a new business, and to set up a brand new magazine for the East Algarve!!

Photographer Gordon and I were treated to a stunning lunch at 4 Aguas. Turn to page 42 to see what we had. The owner, Amilcar, and his staff, could not have been friendlier, and the food was simply spectacular! Help please? I have lived here for 8 years since I retired. I wondered if anyone can give me some information about Portuguese schools, as this is a subject I know nothing about, and I have a relative in England wishing to come out to live here but, with 2 young children, she is quite apprehensive about their education.

Your chance to let us and our readers know your concerns and an opportunity to help.

Dear East Algarve Magazine

I am in the process of buying a property in Eiras Altas. On a recent trip to finalise the paperwork, I picked up your splendid magazine. I have tell you what a magnificent help it was. I visited the bookshop in Tavira, I am buying my electrical goods from Confort, and once we’ve moved into our new house, I shall also be trying out the recipe from Vila Monte, all excellent contacts made through your magazine! Thank you very much.

The number of British people living in Portugal, either with a temporary or permanent residence, is expected to increase. It has been found that the experience of integration by foreign elderly people in a host country is generally positive, and does highlight weaknesses in social services, like access to health care. This benefits the population/country as a whole, as improvements are identified and action taken. This does not only benefit the estrangeiros.

According to the former detectives, Dave Edgar and Arthur Cowley, who are leading the search for information about the disappearance of Madeleine, they believe the Algarve is awash with child molesters. The recent suspect, Raymond Hewlett, whom they failed to interview in Germany, has given DNA to police. The investigation is also focusing on 4 or 5 predatory paedophiles most of them British. Two of them are still living in the Praia da Luz resort.

The “Changeling” actress is tired of the hectic pace of life in the US and looking for a more sedate lifestyle, reports femalefirst.co.uk. She loves Portugal and wants to raise her kids there. She wants to move there as soon as possible,” said a source. Jolie is said to be considering buying a property looking on to the beach in the village of Lagos in the southern Algarve area of Portugal. One of the few places in Europe where you can walk the breadth of a country, this 300-kilometre trail starts in Alcoutim on the Rio Guadiana, Portugal’s eastern border, and ends at Cabo de Sao Vicente, the country’s south-westerly tip. Along the way it passes through grasslands, protected areas and the forests of the Serras de Caldeirao and Monchique. Although more than 300 walkers have already used the route it is now officially open, following a recent inauguration ceremony. Accurate maps are a must. The stunning building that is Beira Rio is located on the edge of the River Gilão. Owner Joy Kennedy tells us their story. This month we met up with the owners of one of our favourite restaurants, Beira Rio, to find out what brought them to the Algarve. The restaurant, previously owned by Gert and Ulrick, was bought by two Irish families in 2006. Vin cent and Joy Kennedy had been frequent visitors to Tavira and the restaurant, along with his brother Sean and his wife Aileen, for over 10 years. Vincent and Sean, who previously worked together in the window industry for 25 years in Roscrea, Co. Tipperary, heard the restaurant was up for sale and did not hesitate in buying it. Sean and Aileen moved here first, shortly followed by Vincent and Joy with their 3 children, Allie 14, Cora 10 and Adam 6. They were in pursuit of a change in lifestyle and were up for the challenge of taking over the popular restaurant as they had always the loved the charming building. Joy and Vincent had been together for 15 years living in Ro screa, Co, Tipperary, although Joy was originally from Athlone, Co Westmeath. The resident Portu guese chef José, who had worked there for 20 years, remained when the business changed hands. Vin cent and Sean advertised for an Irish chef to work alongside him to provide a diversity of authentic Portuguese and Irish cuisine. They found Mark Murphy, who moved over from Ireland to take the role. Beira Rio can be found across the Roman bridge from the Republic Square. Take the first alley on your left and it is situated 100 yards along the river on your right. The restaurant was opened in April 2007 and in November 2007

The Black Anchor Irish bar was opened. Joy and Vincent also managed to find time to get mar ried at this point with a lovely wed ding reception at Quinta Fonte Bispo. The authentic bar furniture was made in Ireland and shipped over, to give a traditionally Irish feel about it. The aim was for the bar to compliment the restaurant and it proves popular in its own right with locals, tourists and golfers. The bar is well stocked, cosy, has Guiness on tap and even boasts Sky sports, Sport TV and Setanta sports. In June they will be show

ing the British Lions Tour of South Africa, World Cup Qualifiers, GAA hurling and Gaelic football. More recently, they have been putting on various live music in the bar which is immensely popular and in such demand that it will now be 3 nights a week, with Danny Maverick and Ged Sloan. It is rumoured that the stunning building used to be a girls’ school in times past with the boys’ school across the river. The banquet room can seat up to 100 people, and quite often is privately hired for wedding receptions or parties. Its display of artwork and subtle colours create a sophisticated environment. The top floor of the building is yet to be renovated but has huge potential, maybe even for accomodation or a B&B. The restaurant’s courtyard is also a great place for families to dine as is it a safe place for the children to play after dinner in a secure environment, with a pool table and a selection of toys. The recently improved area to the front of the restaurant is a great place to dine under the trees by the silent Gilão river, overlooking the ancient battlements. It proves to be an in viting, relaxed atmosphere. Although now a thriving business it is not without its difficulties. There were may legal aspects to conform to and some changes had to be made such as wheelchair access and a new fire alarm system. Joy and Vincent also had the children to settle into school which is no mean feat in itself when moving to a foreign country. All the children are happy and settled in their new life, with Allie at the International School in Almancil and Cora and Adam attending local Portuguese schools. They speak excellent Portuguese and have adapted well to the new surroundings. Joy ad mits it’s not always easy to juggle running a busy restaurant and bring up 3 children. They all love Tavira, and say it feels like home, they have made many new friends and met lots of interesting people. When they first arrived they lived in Moncarapacho, which was a great location but just a little too far to run the business in Tavira. The big gest problem at Beira Rio for most people is what to choose from the vast menu. Having spoken with

Page 9

info@eastalgarvemag.comPage 10 many friends and family that have eaten there, they often remark on being spoilt for choice. Beiro Rio caters for everyone, meat lovers, fish lovers, vegetarians and has a great childrens’ menu. Sunday lunch is also available with a varied choice of main courses or tradi tional roast. As if Joy and Vincent are not busy enough with the bar, restaurant and family life, they have also bought Patrick’s bar in Tavira which will be run by Sean and Aileen. The bar needs total reconsrtuction and renovation, which is underway, and they hope to be open for next season. I am sure it will prove to be as popular as Beira Rio. There is always a great buzz about the place and the staff are welcom ing and friendly. The restaurant gets very busy in the summer so it is advisable to book, and even in the cooler months large groups of golfers can be found inside cel ebrating their triumphs. The Black Anchor bar is open all year round, but the restaurant has closed in the past for the winter months. New border crossing

A fascinating outing, easily accessible from the Eastern Algarve, crosses the River Guadiana on a new bridge between Pomarão in Portugal and La Granado in Spain. S etting off along the Portu guese side of the river, the journey passes through the historic village of Alcoutim and the walled city of Mértola before reaching Pomarão. Nowadays this is a tranquil place, suitable for stop ping off to absorb the stillness of the countryside and the riverside views. It is hard to believe that a hundred years ago it was a bustling port where copper ore and sulphur from Minas São Domingos were loaded onto ships. Along the wharf, ma chinery from that time is a reminder of the town’s industrial heritage and the British firm Mason and Barry that ran the mine and docks. In contrast, the latest technology is the modern bridge, crossing the border, built at a cost of 2.5 million Euros. Seventy five per cent was paid for by the EU and the remain der shared equally between Portu gal and Spain. At the bridge’s inauguration in Feb ruary 2009, Mértola´s mayor, Jorge Rosa, expressed the hopes of both “Thecountries.bridge will revive and boost commercial, social and cultural ties,” he Additionally, said. it is predicted that it will bring visitors and prosperity back to the sleepy hamlet of Pomarão. Several kilometres of new road have been constructed from the Spanish end of the bridge into the tidy town of La Granado and onwards to the river port of Sanlucar de Guadiana. Dur ing the 17th century, the castle on the hillside fired its cannons across the river attacking Alcoutim. Built by the Spanish Count Jerónimo de Ro during the War of Restoration, views from its imposing walls are massive ly Continuingimpressive.south to San Silvestre de Guzman there is a quaint old centre with buildings clustered around the parish church and Plaza de España.

This Bistro in Cabanas has simply stunning views over the Ria Formosa. A fter meeting owner Paulo Runa, it was clear that he really has a passion for his Bistro. A former gas and solar installer, Paulo decided 14 months ago to follow his dream and run his own restaurant. The decision to take on Sabores da Ria was really quite simple. “Because we are on the second floor the view from here is unbeatable. I felt that with the right menu people would find this place irresistible. For now we will concentrate on our specialities of fresh local fish, and our own Shark with courgettes in tomato sauce, salmon pasta with fresh mushrooms, and curried Previouslyprawns”. only a bar, Paulo hopes to keep the restaurant where it is and move the pool table area upstairs into the third floor to create a sports bar. The restaurant will then occupy the whole of the second floor and work independently. Exciting times are ahead for Sabores da Ria. We wish him and his team all the best. to the nature Embalse del

THREE THINGS THAT CAN AFFECT YOUR WEIGHT:

To diet or NOT to diet?

1 When and how often you eat. Skipping meals is probably the most damaging approach, as the body lowers metabolism (the speed at which your body uses energy) when it is starved. Then when you do eat, it uses the calories much more Breakfastslowly.is particularly important, as your body has been without food for some time. Skipping breakfast also has a noticeable impact on mental ability. Some people eat 3 times a day and are happy, others feel better eating several times a day. Grazers, who eat several times a day, are better continuing to do this as attempts to change the pattern will result in

If you are trying to lose weight for summer, ask yourself; Do you really need to diet? We are all assaulted on a regular basis by this diet, that diet, miracle cures and the need to be waif like thin. As a point of inter est, many models suffer from eat ing disorders due to pressure to be well below normal weight. Clothes are easier to design to look good on a stick with no shape. Research has shown that men, and even schoolboys, will se lect women/girls with a curvy fig ure rather than no figure. Modern Western media culture idolises thinness whereas many other cul tures idolise voluptuous figures. The ‘slimming business’ is worth billions so the pressure isn’t going to disappear and there will always be yet another product coming on the market. Promotion of thinness is in their best interests and, whilst some may be helpful, some can be harmful. The first thing to do is check your weight on the BMI (Body Mass In dex) chart (See below)

info@eastalgarvemag.comPage 14 Health

NORMAL RANGE If you fall within the normal range then you should not diet. Maybe you feel you should but two things affect the desire to slim. Firstly the constant pressure via media/advertising and secondly being a little unfit. Muscle tone affects the way we feel and look, not just weight. It’s no good joining a gym or buying endless fitness videos unless you really enjoy this type of exercise. Find an activity you enjoy doing – it may not produce instant re sults but will be far more effective in the long run. Even a few gentle exercises targeting the parts you’re worried about will help, providing you are consistent. Whatever you do, remember, if you don’t enjoy it, you won’t keep it up. Some people are built to be skinny and some are built to be bigger – it’s the luck of the draw. If your body is set for you to be at the top end of the normal range, then it will always strive to keep it there, and attempts to reduce weight inevitably lead to a bigger problem. By all means, take a look at what you eat – the best way is to keep a diary for a few days – but only make changes you can live with permanently. Best advice is to learn to love your self, make the best of what you are and enjoy life.

Don’t panic, this range is common. Providing you approach the prob lem sensibly you can get back in the normal range without too much pain. Do remember – make small changes which you can live with. You don’t ‘’go on a diet’’, only long term changes are effective for long term results.

OVERWEIGHT RANGE

2 What you eat . Obviously what you eat affects your weight. However, there are no bad foods, only too much of them. To remain healthy you need a good variety of food to obtain the pro tein, fat, carbohydrate, vitamins, minerals and trace elements your body needs. However, if you are going to make changes there also has to be the things you enjoy in your diet – if you are a chocoholic it’s no good giving up chocolate al together, you’ll just end up binging on it. Eating has social, emotional and pleasure functions as well as Fatnutrition.isthe most concentrated form of energy at 9 calories per gram but we require some fat in our diet to provide essential fatty acids and fat soluble vitamins. Also, fat is more slowly digested, so reduces early return of hunger pangs. You can easily reduce fat without harm by changing to semi skimmed milk, grilling rather than frying and using a little less butter on bread. In round figures, protein and car bohydrate provide 4 calories per gram. Protein provides amino ac ids which are the building blocks of the body and carbohydrate pro vides sugars which are essential for muscle and brain function. Cutting out sugar in drinks doesn’t hurt but you should not cut down too much on cereal foods, potatoes etc. Eat ing carbohydrates with a high fibre content slows down the rate of absorption and stops you feeling hungry as quickly e.g. wholemeal/ granary bread, brown rice, who legrain breakfast cereal. Alcohol at 7 calories per gram is rapidly absorbed and too much can lead to overweight. If you en joy a drink then don’t cut it out, just be a little more careful on quantity. As we said earlier, keep a diary of what you eat over a few days – BUT do eat normally and do be honest with yourself. Make small changes you can live with on a permanent basis. Losing weight and keep ing the weight off has no quick fix. Many diets, particularly very low calorie diets, frequently result in a vicious cycle of ever increasing weight and ever increasing diffi culty losing it. Cutting out a particular food group e.g. carbohydrates can be harmful as your body has no ready supply of glucose to feed the muscles, including heart muscle, also the extra protein you eat puts a strain on the kidneys. Unless you have a very good knowledge of nutrition you will become deficient in sev eral vitamins and minerals – multi vitamin tablets are not a cure all.

Try to be active but in a way you enjoy and that you are happy to make a part of your normal rou tine. OBESE RANGE Our research showed that many obese people scored high on body dissatisfaction but low on drive for thinness. In other words many people would like to be slimmer but only if an overnight miracle oc curred. Most had been through the mill of every advertised diet, pills or other miracle cure. Many of the ac claimed ‘slimmer of the year’ win ners when reviewed had regained all the weight they had lost. Sadly many people find them selves in this range from incorrect slimming diets in the past. Some times it is the result of physical injury/problems which can affect mobility. Other times it is overeat ing, often due to unhappiness in some area of their lives. It is a more complex problem, and we will go into this in more depth next time. In the meantime, fol lowing the advice for overweight people will provide a good starting Remember, point. please do not starve, for some it has fatal consequences and at best you will have a bigger weight problem in the future.

Book lovers’corner T his month at A Lura dos Liv ros there are lots of good things on offer. Maybe I shouldn’t put it that way... makes it sound like most months I don’t have anything to tempt the reader, and that’s not true. This month just seems particularly bountiful in the variety of things that have come through my door, both new and second-hand. Four of the five titles shortlisted for the Man Booker 2008 are now avail able in paperback and you can find them here: “The Secret Scripture”, by Sebastian Barry, “The Clothes on Their Backs”, Linda Grant, “Sea of Poppies”, Amitav Ghosh, and Philip Hensher’s “The North ern IrèneClemency”.Némirovsky, the Russian nov elist, who emigrated to France as a girl in 1919, and who was killed at Auschwitz in 1942, left behind with her young daughters, a single suit case, that was stored, unopened, for five decades. When it was given to a French archive in the mid 1990’s, it was found to con tain manuscripts for unpublished novels, several notebooks and reworkings of previously published books. “Fire in the Blood” is the second of the novels to come out of that suitcase. Published post humously in 2007, it was written during the last two years of Ms. Némirovsky’s life, and is set in the village of Issy-l’Evêque, where the family lived, after fleeing Paris at the onset of Nazi occupation. Second-hand goodies this month include “Starter for Ten”, David Nicholls, “The Queen’s Sorrow”, Suzannah Dunn, “A Quiet Belief in Angels”, by R.J. Ellory, and “Frac ter.Karintured”,SlaughAlso,Eric Jacob’s biography of Kingsley Amis, and the memoir “Little Girl Lost”, written by Barbie Probert-Wright. The book recounts the experiences of a seven year old girl, in war rav aged Germany, who with an older sister covered over 300 miles, by foot, to search for their mother. And as always, if you don’t see it on the shelf I’m happy to order it for you. Have a good month... Liz Beaupied A Lura do Livros, Tavira 17

T he plane landed in Faro Airport on the evening of 17th December 2006. My Son Richie and I stood at the top of the steps and looked at each other: It was the first of two major “This is it” moments for us, the repercussions of which are still reverberating through our lives. We and our wives had been glued to our internet screens for several months, scouring the world for a place that offered us a better qual ity of life, and this place seemed to fit the bill. None of us had ever holidayed in Portugal before, so our introduction to Portugal was (excuse the clichés) awesome; it ticked so many of our boxes.

Page 18

Of course it did not all start there; Gillian and I had been searching for a place to build a Craft Studio based on a “Quilter’s Retreat”, Gil lian having been captivated by the Quilting Bug (much worse than swine fever) during our stay in the USA. We travelled extensively throughout the USA, Canada, Bra zil, Scotland, Germany and France, but found nothing that really suited Thenus. our family was struck by trag edy; my younger son Christopher died whilst on holiday in Sri Lanka. I had encouraged him to visit India to gain an insight into our ancestry, so it hit us very badly. Chrissy had previously holidayed in France with

Page 19 major Pharmaceutical Manufactur ers. We all loved our work, and it was quite a wrench to leave what we had become so proficient at, for a career in a new field. But leav ing the crush-hour, the noise, the pollution, the high cost of living, the constant fear of hyper-taxation and the search for a better place to bring up 3 young boys were over riding factors. So that’s what brought us to Faro Airport and where the adventure really started. We had a list of properties to view, and we set off to talk to agents to expand this list.

more than thirty different proper ties ranging from ruins to restau rants and B&B’s to Quintas. Then in February 2007, Katie, Gillian and I were in Villamoura and Richy called us from work in London and was very excited. “Dad, you must see these two properties”. One was close to Silves and the other was out in the East Algarve. It was at the second of these when we had our second “This is it” mo ment; when we drove through the gates of the Quinta da Fonte do Bispo. We were awe-struck by the beauty of the gardens and with the facilities: six rental cottages, a two hundred seat event hall/restaurant, a Bistro, four bedroom owner’s apartment, swimming pool, games room, sauna, tennis court – it went on and on. Best of all, it was fully staffed and was up and running. Back home, terribly excited, a fam ily discussion threw up the fact that we had no experience of run ning a place like the Quinta. Katie had done some temporary work in a restaurant and that was it. What did we have to offer? Marketing, hard work and our personalities, that’s all. We would work to bring in the clientele and we would al low the staff to continue running the place as they had done before. Great plan!!! So we bought the Weplace.put down a ten percent deposit

Many of you will know that we launched the East Algarve Maga zine in November 2008 as an ad vertising platform for the entre preneurs in the area. T avira was already established as an important fishing and fish salting town, during the occupation of the Algarve by the Moors, around 2000 B.C., and it retains significant features from its Phoenician and Roman past. Called ‘the prettiest town’ in Portugal by the Portuguese, Tavira is located 25kms from Faro and 20kms from the Spanish border, and in recent years it has become a firm favourite for discerning visi tors. Tavira has a castle, many fine churches and a superb seven arch Roman bridge, on both sides of which you can find fascinating cobbled side streets with good shops selling local produce, includ ing fresh fish, fruit and vegetables, basket-ware, pottery, ceramic tiles, wrought iron work, and cork and shell handicrafts. Friendly locals welcome you to the many bars and restaurants on the river front and in the City’s small squares. A short ferry trip takes you to the Ilha de Tavira to one of the best beaches along the entire coast which offers clean, safe bathing protected by the offshore sand bars, served by a few cafes and bars. Some 7kms of soft sand eas ily accommodates all the sun bath ers, swimmers, windsurfers and sailors, even in peak season A short drive from the city centre you’ll find the natural lagoon which offers tranquillity and the opportu nity to observe nature and birdlife at its best and, within a few kilo meters, are some of the best golf ing facilities in the Algarve, good eating in the nearby fishing village of Cabanas and a weekly market shopping treat in Olhão. Nearby Cacela Velha offers spectacular views over the Ria Formosa. Back in Tavira the town is trans formed at night, with its illuminated white buildings and Moorish roof tops providing an attractive back drop to the variety of restaurants and bars with their tempting Portu guese Menus. June 24th is St John’s Day “São João”, the highlight of Tavira’s Cal endar. The fun spills out into the streets, which are decorated with balloons and paper arches, where people dance around the City’s small squares and the homemade altars that are dedicated to the Saints asking for “Good Fortune”. A fun way to get an overview of the town is to take the mini train tour which runs hourly from 10-7pm from the Roman Bridge; the trip lasts 40 mins, and covers all the main attractions. During June the train runs until 8pm and in July and August until midnight. Across the river within walking distance of the Town Centre is a skate park for skateboards and rollerblades and you can also rent small bikes and go-karts which children can ride on the play cen tre roadway complete with traffic lights, stop signs junctions and roundabouts. So if you have kids with you this could be the place for them to have fun. There is a cafe, so you could enjoy a drink while keeping an eye on them. Some of the finest churches in the Algarve are located in Tavira: the 16th century Igreja da Misericórdia is often cited as one of the finest churches in Tavira, with its blue and white azuejos, magnificent carvings and scenes from the life of Christ. It is located up the hill just past the Tourist Office.

The 13th century Igreja de Santa Maria do Castelo is next to the castle and is famed for holding the tombs of the seven Christian knights of the Order of St. James, who were killed by the Moors. There is also a plaque marking the tomb of Paio Peres Correia (a Mas ter of the Order).

Tavira castle was originally built by the Moors, who occupied the area in the 8th century. It was largely rebuilt after the Christians re conquered the city in 1242 by Dom. Paio Peres Correia, who took it in anger after seven of his principle knights were killed during a period of truce. Tavira was governed at that time by Mouro Aben-Fabilla, who had a young daughter of enormous beauty. It is said that when the governor saw the town being conquered, he magically disappeared, put a spell on his daughter, and promised to return to reclaim the town again, but he never returned. The spell could only be broken by her father or by a brave knight on São João night, (24th June) As her father never returned to reconquer the city, the beautiful Princess was imprisoned in the castle. People believe that on the night of São João, she appears in the walls of the castle and cries for the spell to be broken. Legend has it that, in times gone by, a nobleman and a brave knight have tried to break the spell for the Princess. The brave knight fell in love with her, and tried, on the night of São João, to scale the walls of the castle and to break the spell for his love, but the task proved difficult and day started to dawn... the Knight, D.Ramiro, was not able to break the spell cast upon the beautiful Princess, and she disappeared up into the Theheavens.Knight’s life had changed for ever, and he dedicated his life to fight the Mouros. He eventually obtained the castle but not its beautiful princess... don’t forget to look at the castle walls of Tavira the night before São João’s day, the magic princess may appear to be cryng or to have her spell broken by a noble knight... With thanks Veronica

At Barril Beach, you can still find traces of the old traditional Algarve Tuna Fishery, such as the anchors that extend throughout the dunes.

Over the years the old houses of the fishermen have maintained their characteristics, having given way at the same time, to modern beach infrastructures and to beautiful spaces.

This beach annually winning the Blue Flag prize, is another paradise retreat in the Algarve, due to its natural beauty, enjoying the limpid waters of the Atlantic Ocean and extensive golden sand dunes.Another of its attractions is its easy access by tourist mini-train, from which everyone can appreciate the fauna and flora of the Ria Formosa Natural Park and the wonderful surrounding landscape; or simply walk there, taking in the indigenous species that compose the flora of this Natural Park.

The restaurants, bars, boutiques and a variety of nautical sports and services, complement this beach and ensure that their visitors have an unforgettable experience.

P ollution in the ocean is a major problem that is affecting the ocean and the rest of the Earth, too. Pollution in the ocean directly affects ocean organisms and indirectly affects human health and resources. Oil spills, toxic wastes, and dumping of other harmful materials are all major sources of pollution in the ocean. People should learn more about these because if people know more about pollution in the ocean, then they will know more about how to stop pollution.

What are toxic wastes? Toxic wastes are poisonous materials that are being dumped into the ocean. They harm many plants and animals in the ocean and have a huge impact on our health. Toxic waste is the most harmful form of pollution to sea life and humans. When toxic waste harms an organism, it can quickly be passed along the food chain, where one toxic organism gets eaten by another, larger animal, which then gets eaten by another animal, and can end up being our seafood. Toxic waste gets into seas and oceans through the leaking of landfills, dumps, mines, and farms. Farm chemicals and heavy metals from factories can have a very harmful effect on marine life and humans. Many fishermen believe that the toxic chemicals in the ocean are killing much of the fish population. One of the most harmful chemicals in the ocean is lead. Lead can cause many health problems. It can damage the brain, kidneys, and reproductive system. Lead can also cause birth defects for people. It has been shown to cause low IQ scores, slow growth, and hearing problems for small children. House and car paint and manufacturing lead batteries, fishing lures, certain parts of bullets, some ceramic ware, water pipes, and fixtures all give off lead.

Toxic Rubbish Dumps

Garbage Dumping Garbage dumping is the dumping of harmful materials into the ocean like human waste, ground-up garbage, water from bathing, and plastics. Most of the waste that has been dumped into the ocean in the early 1990’s is still there today. One main cause of garbage dumping occurs when sewage pipes share their space with storm water drains. Rainfall causes the sewage pipes to overflow and the sewage waste mixes with the storm water, which flows into another water source such as a lake or river. After that, the garbage pollutes the ocean, kills plants and animals in the water (for example, the plastic rings that are around pop cans can get around an animal’s neck, causing it to suffocate), and makes the water dirty. Extracted from an article http://library.thinkquest.orgfrom

Most of the waste dumped into the ocean in the early 1990’s is still there today! Here’s what we can do to reduce this pollution

info@eastalgarvemag.comPage 28 Environment

Many things found in the ocean may cause seafood to be dangerous to human health. The effect on humans from contaminated seafood may include birth defects and nervous system damage. Medical waste found in the ocean is being tested to see if swimmers have a chance of developing Hepatitis or AIDS. Other waste has been known to cause viral and bacterial diseases. This type of pollution can be stopped by watching what pollution we are letting into the ocean. People are trying to reduce the amount of waste in the oceans by recycling as much garbage as they can so there is a smaller amount of very harmful materials in the ocean.

The British Seahorse Survey would not be possible without the community involvement we receive through the hundreds of sightings per annum from divers, fishermen and the general public. It’s this very community involvement that made it possible to get the two species; the Short Snouted Seahorse (Hippocampus hippocampus) and the Spiny Seahorse (H.guttulatus) protected under the wildlife and Countryside Act as named species. Hundreds of people have given up their time and energy to go out looking for Seahorses and reporting them into us. Studland Bay - Highest density of Seahorses in the world! Since the discovery of Seahorses at Studland Bay, the site has proven to be internationally important and has thrown up some amazing surprises. The bay has a surprising concentration of Seahorses; with more than 40 recorded in 2008. This density has made it a site of international importance. Nowhere else in the British Isles, or indeed for that matter in the world, except the Rio Formosa in Portugal, is there this concentration of Seahorses.

The British Seahorse Survey was set up in 1994, and is the longest running continuous survey of its kind in the world. It’s this longevity that has allowed us to gain a greater insight into the world of two of the British Isles most enigmatic fish species.

Firstly, the Portuguese market is more mature, certainly The Algarve. It has long-standing and prestigious developments in first class locations, with the infrastructure in place. The banks involved in these developments have tried and tested methods for financing and the staff able to deal with your queries. At a recent UK property exhibition attended by a colleague, enquiries for properties in The Algarve outnumbered those of the Spanish Costas by two to one. Secondly, the Portuguese banks have not over-committed themselves to the extent of their Spanish and UK counterparts. Some very loose lending on poor quality developments and to some pretty poor developers, creditwise, has lead to widespread problems in the Spanish market – some of this now resulting in fire sales of properties – perhaps a great time to buy if you believe in the long-term viability of the Spanish market. Take my advice, choose your location carefully! Leading on from the above point, the Portuguese banks, by and large, still have the same lending terms of 12 months or even 2 years ago. This is dramatically opposed to other areas of Europe, where the banks have all but closed for business. In Spain for example, with the majority of banks, maximum lending is now down to 50% or 60% of the value of the property, plus they will demand far more extensive documentation, proof of affordability and verification. Whilst the Portuguese banks have tightened their lending criteria to a degree, it is in sympathy with the current global credit crisis – not a knee jerk reaction to it. So, for non-residents, loans of up to 80% of property value are still readily available and for residents - up to 100%. Interest only loans are also freely available – which can assist in some circumstances where purchasers are looking to keep costs down in the early years – perhaps pending the sale of a property in the UK or pending Ifretirement.youmeet this lending criteria, then the rates are at all time lows. Even with “spreads” (the rate above Euribor – the main benchmark lending rate in Europe) of between 0.75% and 1.5%, depending on the lender, your mortgage rate could be less than 2%, if it is linked to 3 month Euribor. This rate stood at 1.237% on 19th May – an all time low and probably signals the low point in this cycle. The rate has 18 18

started to creep up over the last few trading days. With property prices as they are – and rates at the low point in the cycle - now is definitely a great time to buy! Look to the future Beware of the spectre of rising interest rates predicted for later in the year (particularly in the UK which may recover quicker than mainland Europe) as economies recover and governments step in to tackle inflation. Both the UK Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) and the European Central Bank (ECB) have been quick to act to reduce rates to stimulate growth and they will react with equal vigour when the markets show sustained Borrowersrecovery. should always build in a “buffer” for rising interest rates. You must be confident in the affordability of any borrowings should rates rise, to avoid a repeat of the pattern of past borrowers over the last 2-3 years - where

rates in Europe rose and the value of Sterling plummeted against the Euro. As always, seek qualified professional independent financial advice. Ajump in new sellers’ average asking prices more reminiscent of a boom market, and, at only 61,000 new sellers this month compared to 135,000 in May last year, a dearth of sellers is appearing; so says Miles Shipside, commercial director at Rightmove. Miles infers that this could be the effect of reduced equity in current owners’ homes, forcing them to either increase their selling price or stay where they are. This makes sense due to lenders’ stricter loan-tovalue ratios and premium rates on mortgages based on lower deposit percentages – if they can be found!

Conclusion: Many prospective sellers have become effectively immobile and are stuck in the equity immobility trap and unable to reduce their prices further, without compromising their ability to Wemove.would add a couple of observations of our own: The jump in new seller’s asking price could be attributable to the balance shifting towards selling the more expensive homes and keeping the less expensive. Wealthier people are generally more sophisticated investors and are more likely to be trapped in leveraged investments that are under water and need to sell their holiday home. Lenders are short of funds and more sensitive to risk, and therefore denying movers access to their better mortgage deals unless there is a substantial deposit, often 25% plus. Our recent Consumer Confidence Survey, which canvassed the views of over 22,000 potential home movers reveals that “The outlook for house prices has turned positive with six in ten potential home movers now expecting prices to remain the same or increase over the next twelve months”. Just three months ago, 69% of respondents were expecting prices to fall further over the next twelve months. This has now turned around dramatically to only 35%. As well as first-time buyers, there are three groups of existing property owners who are also affected by this squeeze on credit and thus are unable to sell in order to trade up or down. These are:

• ‘Recent buyers’ with no or low deposit, and now in or close to negative equity, Some would now be prospective trader uppers having outgrown their property, but they face a very difficult task to raise a higher deposit than they did when they last bought.

• ‘Equity releasers’ who habitually withdrew cash during the 2001-2008 re-mortgage spree. Encouraged by cheap and easy credit and rising property values they funded their lifestyles by regular re-mortgaging and equity release. Figures from the Council of Mortgage Lenders show that in the eight years from 2001 to 2008, the total value of remortgages increased by 460% compared with the period from 1993 to 2000.

Inflation, Deflation

The UK economy is falling further and further under the spell of deflation as prices begin to come under more pressure and businesses struggle to survive. The Consumer Prices Index (the CPI excludes housing costs) fell from 2.9% to 2.3% between March and April, and the Retail Price Index (RPI) dropped sharply from -0.4% to -1.2%. The RPI, which includes housing costs as well as everyday living costs, has now fallen to its lowest level since records began back in 1948. Deflation has a reputation for destroying economies and destroying businesses. In effect deflationary pressure will see prices for consumer goods and services fall on an ongoing basis which would place more pressure on business profit margins, lead to cost cuts and eventually lead to a rise in unemployment. The risks are there and they are starting to become ever clearer! How would we perceive this from here in Portugal? Friends from Ireland visited last week and told us that the cost of a dressed hamburger and chips in a Naas hotel nightclub was €10.00, and their father would feel aggrieved if he could not go out every evening and have three pints of Guinness at €5 a pint. Here in Portugal, you can get a Ribeye

The next phase is the reduction in discretional spending power, which has forced the UK and the Algarve region of Portugal into a deflationary episode, but has not really bitten in Ireland. Housing prices had never fallen before in Ireland, so it has come as a major shock; now they are being asked to take voluntary pay cuts to bring their earnings into line with Europe and the UK. Unfortunately, they have a long way to fall. How many family men in the UK or Portugal do you know who can afford to spend €105 a week on beer? Here in Portugal, the housing bubble didn’t really take off and financial services are still only a minor industry, so the downside is fairly limited. That does not mean that prices won’t fall and wages won’t stagnate! Many people in the Algarve region are sophisticated investors and were caught leveraged up to their eyeballs. Leveraged is another way of saying that they bought things on credit, with a small deposit; now they have to pay the rest and have lost (some of) their income. So the result is that they have to sell something quickly (usually the luxuries) and many of the higher priced properties may come down significantly, but we believe that the median (home) prices will hold up fairly well. But take heart, if you have to sell now, the property you are buying will most likely have dropped the same amount as yours. You could sell your house and rent for a while, hoping that prices will drop further and you can grab a bargain later on. If you are happy where you are, just remember how stressful moving home can be and hang on, property prices will come back over time. But we encourage you to look out for that fixed rate mortgage deal, it could save you a fortune if this deflationary episode flips and roars into raging inflation. Consider it insurance against an implosion of the unstable financial system! 21

Global Money supply Is it real or is it illusary: is it backed by Gold or Toxic Derivatives? Below we look at the notional value of the Global Money Supply and it looks to us like the entire financial system is now a Troubled Asset. The Great Credit Contraction “The system does not collapse but evaporate.” race Mayer, J.D. Is it old age that makes us more cynical, or is it the world we live in? Each week we will present a cynic’s view of a subject that’s bugging us. This is your platform for voicing your opinion, so send your diatribe to rebasse@aol.com for inclusion in this section. I’ll kick off with my favourite subject: Gold’s relationship with global currencies.

T he first picture illustrates the total global supply of Real Money; that is money that actually exists. The total is equivalent to US$4.03 Trillion. This is also known as Power Currency, that is currency that is issued by Central Banks, supported by the country’s reserves, which were historically made up of Gold, but may be composed of those “troubled assets” that we hear so much of.

BROAD CURRENCY ILLUSIONS: $65T World treasury bills/Govt’ Bonds $15.5T U.S. Debt/Treasury bills $11T POWER CURRENCY ILLUSIONS: $4T Physical notes (£,€,$,¥,C$,A$,etc.) $2T FRN$ (physical paper notes) $800B POWER MONEY (In Tons): 150,000T Gold & Silver $2-4T WORLD GDP (Gross domestic product): $55T Exter’s pyramid updated and adapted. All amounts estimated approximations

•There is not enough money in the world to pay this commission! If we want to get the notional value of the world’s 150,000 Ton Gold reserves we must divide the total notional value of the assets ($1894Trillion) by the current value of the Gold (US$4Trillion) and we conclude that Gold must increase by 473 times its current value to support this financial asset bubble price. Gold should be US$449,350 an Ounce.

ABOVE: The total money supply that countries have issued and that is either in banks or currently in circulation.

Now most of you will have heard of Pyramid Schemes and Ponzi Schemes – here we have the biggest of all that puts Mr Madoff to shame. The countries borrow money by issuing bonds that pay a fixed dividend, and the people accept them as super-safe “Money”, but just like the note, it’s just a government promise or an IOU for $65Trillion. Then we have a Bond and Stock Market currently valued at $100Trillion, which as we know is priced on emotion and can become worth much less overnight. Above that we have Miscellaneous Assets such as real estate and commodities worth a notional $125T, but again, only worth what someone is willing to pay for it. If the market collapses, so does this value. At the top of this pyramid we have the infamous DERIVATIVES. Things that don’t exist that were paid for with money that did not exist, but are valued by their owners at $1,600 Trillion, which happens to be only 400 times the real money that exists. Points to think about: • If the people who negotiated those derivatives got just 1% commission, they would receive $16Trillion.

P elargoniums are tough, waterwise plants that can provide a big splash of colour for minimal effort. You’ll probably know them as geraniums, and for a long time, they’ve been taken for granted, tucked away in neglected corners of the garden.

4 Dwarf and miniature zonal pelargoniums are 13-20cm tall measured from soil to the top of the plant, excluding stem length and flower, making them excellent plants for pots and window boxes. The miniature zonal plants are floriferous with double and single blooms in a wide range of colours and having green to greenish-black leaves.

Pelargoniums are one of the easiest garden plants to propagate, and the propagation method is the same for all varieties. Taking cuttings is an inexpensive way of producing new plants whilst maintaining older plants shape and size. Selecting the cuttings Although it is possible to take cuttings from spring onwards it is best to take your cuttings in the summer months when the light conditions are good and the weather is warm. Select strong healthy shoots (non-flowering ones from regal or scented leaves varieties). Cutting just above the 3rd joint below the growing tip, trim each cutting just below the lowest joint and remove the leaves.

Hot Coloursfora climatewarm

2 Zonal pelargoniums have cute flowers but for these plants it’s really all about the foliage. They derive their name from the zones or bands of colour in the leaves. Zonal pelargoniums produce so much foliage that a collection of dead leaves builds underneath. It’s a great idea just to remove those to stop the build up of fungal diseases such as botrytis.

Pelargoniums produce flower buds all year. To keep them coming, just pinch out the old flower stems as they finish, and the plant will look after itself. Pelargoniums can be grown in all types of well drained compost providing it is fresh and has been kept out of direct sunlight. Care needs to be taken with watering, however as some composts can drain more freely than others and pelargoniums need to be kept on the dry side until well established. They then may need plenty of watering during the growing season. Give pelargoniums a weekly application of a high potash fertilizer. Start these feeds three weeks from potting up, and throughout the summer. This helps the plants to continue producing a mass of good-quality blooms without becoming too leafy.

Small or large there is a Pelargonium to suit your garden

There are five major types; 1 The ivy leaf pelargoniums, which derive form a single distinctive species Pelargonium peltatum. It has a leaf that looks like English ivy and has a wonderful trailing habit, which makes the plant a useful groundcover, for spilling over embankments and the tops of big pots. They also have lovely, delicate flowers, often with intricate patterning, and like all pelargoniums, benefit from a regular, light, trimming every few months to keep them looking their best.

But the need to conserve water has led to a resurgence of interest in this beautiful group of plants. Early botanists lumped pelargoniums together with a group of` similar plants already known as geraniums, and the name has stuck with gardeners ever since.

3 Regal pelargoniums develop a shrubby habit in the garden and are more upright growing. With rounded, deeply serrated leaves and wide, trumpet shaped flowers often exotic in colour, it is the spectacular flower which makes them great in pots, courtyards and garden beds.

5 Scented-leaved pelargoniums have small, delicate flowers with five petals, and fragrant foliage for which they are chiefly grown. They make excellent house plants and in warmer climates can be grown outside as bedding plants.

Other methods to make further plants are from seeds and division. From seed you first need to remove the parachutes from the small seed to sow. Germination occurs in 525 days. In hot weather, seeds of many succulents lie dormant, so are best sown after summer. Seedlings may damp off if chilled or in poor light. Division is done on plants that are over 2 years old. Firstly lift the parent plant, and cut or break off one or more of the tubers from the roots. Half fill a small pot with cactus compost and add a shallow layer of fine grit. Lay the tuber on top and cover with more grit. Place in a bright, airy spot at 19°C. Keep the compost slightly moist. A new shoot should be produced from each tuber after 2-3 weeks.

Place the pot in a light, warm position, but not in full sun. One week after, water the cuttings again from below by putting the pots back in water. Water again in another week to 10 days, by which time, the cuttings should be rooting. Remember never water the cuttings from above or cover with plastic as this could cause grey mould/botrytis or other damping off diseases. Always allow free circulation of air around them. When the cuttings have rooted and fresh leaves start to appear, pot them up singly into 7cm pots.

For the sauce: In a frying pan, mix good quality oil with some red chilli “piri piri” and salt. When the oil is warm add lemon juice. Once the lemon has evaporated, add more brandy to “flambée”. To cook: Place on a hot charcoal grill for sufficient time to get a good grilling colour and while turning it brush it with a generous quantity of sauce. To Serve: Serve with butter rice or garlic rice (to your taste) and garnish with strips of red pepper. Quatro Tavira,Aguas 281 325 329 Tlm 918 144 4.aguas@mail.341telepac.pt

The month of May had started on a very different note when 2000 fans travelled to Fatima for a top-of-thetable clash with U.Leiria where Olhanense were totally outplayed losing 5-1. Jorge Costa needed to rally his troops for the next game against Santa Clara (Azores) who were level with Olhanense at the top. The club slashed the price of admission to €5 and gave local schools thousands of free tickets. Would this ever happen in the UK for such an important match? With five minutes of the match remaining, and the score still 0-0, many in the near capacity crowd of 7,000 could not bear to watch as Djalmir stepped up to take a penalty. His low shot to the right flew into the back of the net to give the home side a three point lead at the top with two games to play.

Chris Wright keeps us up to date with latest Sporting Clube Olhanense news and their tremendously dedicated and growing fan club.

arly on Sunday evening 17th May the news filtered through that Sporting Clube Olhanense had won their vital match at Gondomar 1-0 and had achieved the almost impossible dream of promotion to the Premier League. Olhão went wild. Pam Pardo heard the crescendo of sound three miles away at her family run restaurant in Pechão. “My father was a Director of Manchester City so I know how passionate fans can get, but this was something very special.” said Pam, now an avid Olhanense supporter along with her two grandsons. The mouth watering prospect of welcoming FC Porto, Sporting & Benfica to Olhão will be a tremendous boast to the economy and tourist industry in the area.

A tense match, the home side had to win to keep alive the hope of avoiding relegation, was decided in the 76th minute when Toy headed home the all important goal for the Algarveans. Following the game Francisco Leal, President of the Câmara Municipal de Olhão, and Isidoro Sousa, President of Sporting Clube Olhanense, joined the players on the pitch as they received a rapturous reception from their fans. Francisco Leal said at the club’s recent 97th Anniversary Dinner that, should the club achieve promotion, work would start immediately to upgrade the facilities at the José Arcanjo Stadium. For the first time in seven years, Farense (Faro) was the last team from the Algarve to grace the Premier League, southern Portugal will be represented in Liga InSagres.theearly hours of Monday morning the people of Olhão flocked to the ground to welcome back their conquering heroes. It is 34 years since SC Olhanense were last in the top flight. The British expats, who now number over 50, have created a true bond with the local Portuguese fans and in appreciation hosted a party for their new friends in Manta Rota at the end of the month.
