Vila Real de Santo António boosts the Triathlon

T

he municipalities of the Guadiana Eurocity project (Vila Real de Santo António, Castro Marim and Ayamonte) presented a competition calendar which aims to turn these cities into an international “Capital of the Triathlon.” The events are part of a partnership between various entities, such as the Clube Desportivo Iberman, from Huelva, who, in the last few years, has been promoting the spread of this sport activity in the South of the Iberian Peninsula. The first competition of the Iberian calendar, the «Iberman Eurocidade do Guadinada», will take place on June 14th, in Vila Real de Santo António, starting on the Monte Gordo beach. The challenge includes 3,8 km swimming, 180 km cycling and a 41,1 km marathon.

What future for Pego do Inferno?

T

he Centro de Ciência Viva do Algarve will be organizing on Saturday, June the 7th, at 2.30pm, at the Álvaro de Campos library, in Tavira, another collaborative workshop about the Pego do Inferno waterfall. The population is invited to participate and express opinions on what measures should be taken regarding the future management of this site. The initiative arises under the European project PLACES - Cities of Scientific Culture, which aims to promote the participation of the citizens in the discussion of scientific issues. Tavira is one of the 68 participating cities. The Pego do Inferno, is considered to be one of the most emblematic sites of this municipality because of the waterfall, attracting hundreds of tourists. It was completely destroyed by the great fire of 2012.

Easier access to Praia Verde

C

astro Marim council is currently carrying out the repaving of the access route to Praia Verde. The main goal, says the municipality, is to make it easier and safer for residents and tourists to access the beach. The work is expected to be completed next month and represents a total investment of €90,000. Praia Verde is one of the 82 Algarve beaches recently awarded a Blue Flag.

Health

Health advice from Duarte Arrais, Fisioclube Fuzeta.

Sun, Sea & Therapy

T

he Fisioclube Center for holistic therapies is pleased to invite all readers and anyone interested to visit our space of massage therapy, on the island of Fuzeta on the Ria Formosa area in Fuzeta, from 1 June until the end of September. Simply take the boat to the island for only 1 € adults (roundtrip) or 0.50 cents for children. One of the immediate benefits of massage is a feeling of deep relaxation and calm. This occurs because massage prompts the release of endorphins, the brain chemicals (neurotransmitters) that produce feelings of wellbeing. Levels of stress hormones, such as adrenalin, cortisol and norepinephrine, are also reduced. Studies indicate that high levels of stress hormones impair the immune system. Some of the physical benefits of massage include reduced muscle tension, improved circulation, stimulation of the lymphatic system, reduction of stress hormones, increased joint mobility and flexibility, improved skin tone, speedier healing of soft tissue injuries, heightened mental alertness, reduced anxiety and depression. 11 Benefit of sunlight 1 Sunlight and whole foods send breast cancer into remission. 2 The sun's light kills bad bacteria. 3 Sunlight has a beneficial effect on

8

skin disorders, such as psoriasis, acne, eczema and fungal infections of the skin. 4 Sunlight lowers cholesterol. 5 The sun's rays lower blood pressure. 6 Sunlight penetrates deep into the skin to cleanse the blood and blood vessels. 7 Sunlight increases oxygen content in human blood. 8 Sunlight builds the immune system. 9 Regular sunlight exposure increases the growth and height of children, especially babies. 10 Vitamin D is different from other essential vitamins because our own bodies can manufacture it with sunlight exposure. (The main function of vitamin D is to regulate the absorption of calcium and phosphorus in our bones and aid in cell to cell communication throughout the body) 11 Sunlight can cure depression. FOUR good habits to take proper care of your skin in the sun. To prevent the sun from damaging your health, protect your skin before any sun exposure. Avoid exposure during hours of peak sunlight. Do not expose children under the age of three to direct sunlight. Protect yourself with clothing, a hat and UV-filtering sunglasses. Apply a sufficient amount of sun

cream. Visit us at Fisioclube Fuzeta between 10:00 am and 7:00pm!

Beauty BEFORE

Once again we welcome George Allen from the Hair Studio in Conceção Cabanas and this month’s hair model, Anne.

Makeover of the month

W

e welcome back George from The Hair Studio in Conceiçao De Tavira and his hair model Anne Cunningham from Glengormley, Co. Antrim Northern Ireland. Anne felt her hair was 'a mess'! She had been trying to grow it out from a shorter style, and wanted a change. She was looking for a feel good sunkissed new look, after her holiday here in the East Algarve. After the cut Anne said she felt

fabulous. She loves the cut and highlights, and the fact that it wasn't too difficult to re-create. 'George made me feel at ease, we had a real laugh and Claire was amazing too, I wish they lived closer to me!' George said that this was a typical client problem; Trying to grow hair, in an between stage. The problem was the natural wave in Anne's hair, which was making it frustrating as the 'wavy bits' are uncontrollable.

George chose a versitile cut, easy to dry free-hand or with a brush. Colours were a high lift blonde with mid blond foils on a ratio of 3:1 with the lightest colour more promenent. The development process was 40 minutes and the total cost including 2 colours was €50. Anne's make-up was done by mobile make-up and Nail artist Claire Dennett, (tel 916 830 020) You can contact George on 916 765 082.

Focus on

T

his month’s 'focus on' found us in the parish of Loulé in the delightful village of Alte. Although not strictly the east Algarve, it's only a short drive away and well worth a visit. Alte is a typical Algarvian village featuring white washed houses and hand crafted chimneys which contrast with the colourful flower pots, enticing visitors to take a stroll along the narrow streets. Nestling in the foothills of the Serra do Caldeirao, Alte’s population is a mere 2,350 inhabitants. The scenery is stunning, hilly and mountainous. Today the economy is based largely on dry land farming and still relies on practises handed down through the ages, in addition

14

to the production of arbutus-berry brandy, honey, cheese and sweets. The church lies at the centre of the village, and there are numerous little cafes in the surrounding area for you to relax and soak up the tranquillity. At the eastern end of Alte, past the school are the springs (fontes) for which Alte is well known, and should not be missed. The area around Fonte Peguena (little spring) is quite breathtaking. Tribute is paid here to the local poet, Candido Guerreiro, and you can see some of his work around the village on the tiled plaques and the house he once lived in. This really is a harmonious setting where the greenery and coolness of the water invites you to enjoy some leisure time or even

take a swim; quite breathtaking. Here you’ll find the outdoor amphitheatre too, set into the hillside which overlooks the whole area and hosts concerts during the year. This is the beginning of a series of waterfalls as the water flows down the hillside. We followed the river down through the lovely village. A sight not to miss is the Vicar's waterfall. Follow signs to the cemetery, then take the walk down the hill enjoying the peaceful coutryside. Once there you can admire the falls, it is also a great place to take a picnic with family or friends.

www.eastalgarvemag.com www.eastalgarvemag.com

Alte is a true hidden gem! There are a number of trails and tracks which can be followed by the keen walkers out there. As well as being known for producing honey, pottery, wooden handicrafts and having its own goat’s cheese produce, worth noting are the handcrafts made in Alte from the esparto grass, which flags the whole river’s edge. These are sold throughout the Algarve. We hope you get a chance to visit Alte, it is one of the prettiest villages in the Algarve, the perfect place to go for a wonderful day trip.

ntroducing local artist and self sonfessed animal lover William Wagstaff, known by friends as Bill. Originally from Stoke on Trent, Bill worked in London for 10 years as display manager for the famous William Whiteleys of baywater, said to by the UK's first ever department store. He then went on to work in Bath during the 80's as an antique dealer, eventually settling in Santa Catarina, Tavira in 1987. Bill's artwork initially consisted of mainly Portuguese scenes and sometimes pieces for local Portuguese religious festivals. More recently he has favoured still life paintings and a particular favourite; historical figures. He explained how he loves the vibrant colours in military uniforms, especially the Napoleonic period. His work has only ever been for pleasure, with the odd piece given to friends and local establishments as gifts. He has now (with some prompting from family members) decided to show his work. This month Bill opens his first ever exhibition, in Santa Catarina's Casa do Povo, from the 7th June until the 10th June, open between 5pm and 8pm. We wish him every success with the exhibition, it was a real pleasure to meet him and see his work. For further information, call Bill on 281 971 269.

uropean household savings have continued to rise since the debt crisis started in 2008, underscoring the cautious attitude consumers have adopted in times of uncertainty. The question on everyone’s lips, from politicians to analysts, is what they are going to do with it? This was the question asked exactly one year ago. Now we know. A part of these savings have been put to work in Portuguese real estate as transaction volume has steadily increased over the past 12 months. In addition, programs like the Golden Visa and the NHR (Non-Habitual Resident) have also proved to be successful in attracting foreign buyers. In general property prices are 40% below their peak. With sales often conducted near or below replacement value, it makes good financial sense to purchase a property for the medium (3 – 5 years) to long term (10 years or more). There are many properties for sale that could generate a total return on investment (rental income + capital appreciation) of 10% 14% per annum. At Land & Houses Algarve we often address this question by assessing the opportunities available to investors and end users who are keen to invest capital. It may seem strange to talk about opportunities when the economy of Portugal is in recession, but there are bargains to be found in all type of property throughout the Algarve. The volume

Even during this period punters have been achieving good returns by buying low, renovate and sell properties. On a positive note, higher transaction volumes usually precede a recovery in property prices. Vendors of property have found it hard to sell their property the past couple of years, even with price reductions. The past 6 years was a buyers market but this may change rather sooner than later with the increase in sales volume. A recent study by the OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development) regarding house prices showed that in countries such as France, Britain and Norway the property market is overvalued and in contrast property prices are most undervalued in Portugal, Germany and Ireland. Moreover, the latest statistics of the INE (Instituto Nacional de Estatistica de Portugal) show an 11% increase in property prices for the Algarve in the 1st Quarter of 2014. Be that as it may, in our experience prices have been flat since the beginning of the year.

As with all predictions about the future, it remains difficult to put a date on when property prices will start to rise again especially in light of the weaker than anticipated economic recovery in Europe as a whole. However, we do not foresee further downside and expect to see price levels to stay flat possibly until the end of the year in a worst case scenario. We are living in uncertain times and it is unwise to predict the future. But the truth is that there are still good quality properties on the market at price levels not seen for a long time. With current interest rates on savings being historically low – with a negative yield after tax and inflation – property in the Algarve is a good alternative asset class to invest in. If the number of buyers continues to increase, this window of opportunity may not last forever. Language

Month 6, Half yearly review - Alternative Beginners Guide (ABG) Finale of ‘Portuguese from Scratch.’ David Holland's experiences learning Portuguese as an Expat.

P

hrase books invariably omit words which in some circles, (notably tasca or tavern regulars,) are used on a weekly if not daily basis. With this in mind, the following 4 topics are suggested as suitable material for inclusion in an ABG (see article heading.) 1 ‘Cara ou coroa?’ Its meaning not obvious but translates as ‘heads or tails?’ (literal translation ‘face or crown.’) ‘Lançar a moeda’ is ‘to toss the coin’ once the choice is made. Primary candidates for an ABG. 2 The suits of playing cards are used by many. Spades are ‘espadas,’ hearts are copas, diamonds are ouros and clubs are paus. These last three translations were a little unexpected as copas are crowns or cups, ouros is the plural of ouro (gold) and paus is the plural of pau a word meaning (amongst other things) stick. The pack of cards is ‘o baralho de cartas.’ To shuffle is ‘embaralhar’ and all importantly to deal is ‘dar as cartas’

(literally to give the cards). 3 ‘Uma aposta’, a bet and ‘apostar’ to bet; frequently used, but are notably absent from beginners’ guides! 4 Although ‘dados’ meaning data was familiar its other meaning of dice was not. Many variations of the game of dice exist in Portugal but in all forms it starts with the shaking of the dice followed by the throw (abalar to shake and atirar to throw).’ An observation on computers (computadores). The familiar symbol @ on computer keyboards is known in English as the At sign. Unable to access @ on an unfamiliar Portuguese keyboard I asked for assistance and learned that the Portuguese exotically call it an ‘arroba.’ Coming from the Arabic word pronounced ar-ruba, a unit of weight, the term is still used in the Portuguese cork (cortiça) industry. The @ symbol had long been used as an abbreviation of an arroba. It should be pointed out that other languages have also named

it with imagination; the Dutch for example label it ‘apenstaartje,’(little monkey tail!). The latest addition to my vocabulary is ‘leilão’ meaning auction, picked up from adverts on the internet. This was bizarrely similar to the first word I learned in Portugal, ‘leitão,’ a suckling-pig. Naturally words fall by the wayside or are lost through a failing memory but this first word became imprinted unlike many which followed. Following a break for the summer, após pausa de verão, julho/ setembro, it is hoped to continue reflections on learning Portuguese although the current titular defence of ‘from scratch’ should by then be a thing of the past.

Climbers

Your essential guide to growing and maintaining climbers

A

nnual and perennial climbing plants never fail to draw the eye or command attention as they rise through and above a tapestry of surrounding plants. They are invaluable for creating rhythm or repetition within the garden and for providing vertical accents, as well as prolonging or enhancing small and large-scale planting schemes. Using climbing plants in a variety of ways can bring exciting results. Nature can sometimes show us how we should grow climbers more effectively and perhaps encourage us to think more laterally at the same time. In the wild, climbing plants curl, twist or twine around their hosts for support as they reach towards the light. The leaf stems of Clematis vitalba (old man’s beard) reach out and wrap around other plants, as do the strongly twining stems of Ipomoea. In the garden, climbing plants can be allowed to trail as ground cover, weave among foliage or scramble through a host shrub or tree, as nature originally intended. Think of the endless plant combinations you can achieve by growing climbers through shrubs, herbaceous perennials and grasses, lengthening the period of display or season of interest. This maximises the use of garden space and at the same time enlivens those evergreen or deciduous shrubs that can look rather sombre before or after flowering. Essential as they are in providing structure to schemes some shrubs can take up a lot of space, and can be better employed as ‘natural’ supports for climbing plants.

www.eastalgarvemag.com

33

Maintenance of climbers Some basic maintenance is required to get the best from climbing plants, and encourage them to weave through their host. Remember to tie in climbers on a regular basis with garden string or twine to the host shrub or perennial as they are growing. Groundcover climbers need to be trained along the ground and held in place using wire pegs as they grow. Ensure evergreen grasses are raked out in spring before climbing plants start to grow. Prune out old wood on summer-flowering shrubs in the spring prior to training climbers onto the

34

current-year’s canopy. Trim shrubs to assist the climber if necessary. Strongly growing climbers should be planted outside the edge of the host-shrub’s canopy.

Feed climbers with a nitrogenrich fertiliser in spring and switch to a high-potash formula in early summer, following the recommended application rate. Sprinkle fertiliser around the base of the plant and lightly fork into the soil. Prune clematis in spring according to their group type and tie in. Springprune shrubs grown as coppices such as Sambucus or Buddleja before climbers begin to grow. Deadhead regularly through the season. Cut herbaceous climbers to ground level in autumn and give winter protection to the rootstock if required. Mark

What I would like to say to you is don’t worry there is always a solution. At Premier FX what we can do is listen to your needs. We can then go through the options to secure the best rates for you, as we know its all well and good while the rate is in your favour, but what happens if you have a large sum or regular payments you need to transfer and the rate is against you? When this happens there are solutions for you; Premier FX can offer fixed rates for up to 2 years and we can look at fixing rates for regular payments on a monthly basis, this can protect you against the fluctuating exchange rate and give you piece of mind. Of course we can still offer the spot rate - which is the rate on the day, our online system gives you access

Whether you are an existing Premier FX client or would like to register for this free service call us today for your password and further information or log onto www. premfx.com Over the past month the STG/ EUR interbank rate has stayed above the 1.21 and even got to the 1.23 mark, so for those of you who are transferring from Pound to Euro it has been in your favour. However for those moving money back to the UK it hasn’t been the best month to do, so this is when it is key to talk to your currency broker to take advice. So where do we predict the STG/EUR to be over the next month, as the UK

announced reasonably positive retail figures and the Bank of England has still not raised interest rates we don’t predict it moving too much, so for moving your Pounds to Euros you should be looking around the 1.21 - 1.22 mark. Keep up to date with our Finance expert, chartered accountant Ricardo Chaves from All Finance Matters.

Structuring a rental property investment in Portugal

T

he Portuguese real estate marketing is currently attracting many foreign investors, this has already had an impact on real estate sales in Portugal, which were 2% higher on the first quarter of 2014, when compared to the same quarter in 2013. Many of these investors are looking for good rental yields, but before investing in your rental property or renting out your property in Portugal, you should plan ahead and find out the best way to structure your real estate investment, in order to be as tax efficient as possible and also to minimise any future capital gain tax. Individual ownership of Portuguese rental real estate is taxed at 28%. If you rented out your property in 2013, your accountant may have just submitted your tax return and if your rental income falls under annex F, you will find that the tax you will pay on your rentals for last year is 28% and the only tax deductible costs were: • Documented maintenance, refurbishment or repairs to the property.

• Annual tax (IMI – council tax). • Buildings insurance. • Condominium expenses. For 2014 you can structure your investment and plan ahead, adopting a fully compliant strategy that can dramatically reduce tax assessment on short-term lets (holliday rentals) and also mitigate the tax you currently pay. In fact if you let out furnished accommodation to holidaymakers on a short term basis, you are engaged in tourist related services and should already be declaring your rental income under category B and also should have already applied for a Local Lodging License. This type of activity receives a special treatment under the ‘IRS - Simplified Regime’ and tax is calculated on sales, in other words you are only taxable on 15% of your invoiced income. How can you find out whether you may benefit from this tax regime? In first place, when applying for new local lodging licences (touristic licenses) all city councils are demanding that you register under category B, prior to application.

Secondly if you send us an email with the details of your rentals, we can show you how much tax you can save by switching regime. To be able to follow under category B, you need to register your independent business activity in Portugal. This can be done at the local tax office or your accountant can do it over the internet for you. Registration at the Social Security is also needed but contributions only begin in the first month of the second year of your activity and in some cases exemption can be applied for. Just like any other business, you will register for VAT and if your business exceeds €10,000 you must collect VAT from your customers. Tourist related activities currently charge 6% VAT (the lowest rate). Quarterly VAT declarations must be done over the internet, however as most of the business expenses include VAT at 23% is possible that the tax may have a VAT credit. Any related business costs can be used on your VAT declaration to reduce your VAT bill or make it a credit, such as:

Olhanense beat Porto but are relegated!

N

All the latest local sports news from Chris Wright.

ext season will see an absence of Premiera Liga football in the Algarve. In the penultimate game of the season Olhanense recorded their first victory for forty years over mighty FC Porto thanks to goals from former Danish international Koldrup and centre-forward Dionisi. The 2-1 win gave them hope of avoiding the drop and meant they needed at least a point from the final game at V.Setú bal. Sadly a 3-1 defeat consigned them to 2nd

Division football in September. Although they finished level with P.Ferreira, who lost 4-2 at home to Acadé mica, and had a better goal difference it is the ‘head-tohead’ results between the two teams that is used in the final analysis, unlike the English Premier League where goal difference counts. A last gasp goal in the final minute of stoppage time by Del Valle for P.Ferreira against Olhanense back in February made all the difference. The Algarve side won the home fixture 1-0 at the Algarve Stadium in August

Ronaldo tips his top two

C

ristiano Ronaldo, rumoured to be having a villa built in the east Algarve, believes host nation Brazil and world champions will be the top teams in this summer’s World Cup. The Portugal captain will lead his country to Brazil after beating Sweden in the play-offs, with Ronaldo scoring four goals over the two legs, including a crucial hattrick in the second-leg. He expects the hosts and current holders to put up the biggest fight for the trophy alongside the likes of France, Italy and Argentina. However, the former Manchester United star, who has scored forty-nine goals in a hundred and ten international appearances, does not believe Portugal or England will be among the teams who will be battling it out in the later stages of the tournament. The Portuguese nation is hoping that Ronaldo can recover from the injury that clearly impeded him in the Champions League final against Atletico Madrid. At Euro 2008, Ronaldo played through the pain barrier for his country, but it was patently obvious he was not fully fit. At the end of the tournament it emerged he had been carrying a foot injury that required surgery, forcing him out of the start of the following season at Manchester United. Portugal have now qualified for eight consecutive major tournaments.

last year but P.Ferreira turned the tables with a 3-1 home in February and that all important late, late goal. There will still be plenty of football interest in the Algarve come the autumn with Portimonense, Farense and Olhanense serving up some potentially tasty local derbies whilst the more adventurous will be able to follow their team to the Azores for the fixture against Santa Clara. Twenty-four teams will compete in the 2nd Division including the ‘B’ teams of Benfica, Sporting Lisbon, FC Porto and SC Braga.

Mourinho returns home

J

osé Mourinho, who regularly holidays in the Algarve, is returning to management in Portugal…….but only for one game! The Chelsea supremo will take charge of the FC Porto team that will play Barcelona in a testimonial match for Deco is one of the few players to have won two UEFA Champions League titles with different clubs - FC Porto in 2004 and FC Barcelona in 2006. Dutch coach Frank Rijkaard will take charge of the Barcelona team which will include Lionel Messi, Ronaldinho, Samuel Eto'o and Henrik Larsson while Xavi and Andres Iniesta's participation depends on their fitness after the World Cup. Ricardo Carvalho and Paolo Ferreira will be in the FC Porto team. The Brazilian born Deco qualified for Portugal in 2002 and made seventyfive appearances including two World Cups. The game is scheduled for the 25th July at 7.45pm at Porto’s Dragã o Stadium.

Chocking up for control This months tip from Keith Ashdown, Benamor professional.

Chipping from just off the green, NOTE: Right hand fingers on shaft, using a 7 iron

O Pro stats

Name: Keith Ashdown Title: P.G.A. Resident professional Pro since: 1964 Born: Crowborough, Sussex, U.K. Tournament History: •Winner of more than 100 professional golf tournaments in Europe. •Represented G.B. and Ireland in the P.G.A. Cup against the U.S.A. •16 Hole in ones (4 on par 4’s) •Course record holder at Benamor, 65 (6 under par), although has scored 60 strokes on 3 occasions (Not counted as a course record as they were not scored in a professional competition) •European tour player member 1968 - 82 •European seniors tour player/member 2003;2004;2005

n many shots you can get better results if you choke up on the club. That is: slide your hands down the grip towards the club head. You will find that a chocked grip will help you to force the club head through the ball. It will also improve your accuracy on delicate shots around the green. In shortening your grip it may be necessary to place some of your fingers on the actual metal part of the club. There is no set pattern for down-the-grip shots, they may be pushed, flicked or squeezed. For example when the situation calls for getting the ball up in the air quickly you will get greater success if you use a light grip and more wrist action at impact. But when you have an unobstructed chip shot keep the wrists fairly stiff as you would in putting (see picture). You will find that it is quite easy to “scoop up” the ball from a down the grip position and such shots feel as if the ball were thrown underhand. My advice is: Be original and change your ways. Practise using every club with a choke grip. There’s more than just one way to manoeuvre a golf ball around and through the green. On many occasions the ball will lie tightly or on a slope so a top-of- the shaft grip will feel awkward and be risky. Practice from tough spots - do not always practise the easy ones. Good golfing, Keith
