Dear East Algarve Magazine I am looking for someone who loves a challenging game of chess - a proper game not one of those computer games. I received a new chess set and board as a xmas gift and haven’t played on it yet, but be warned I also received three books on opening moves. I am based in the Sao Bras area but could meet up anywhere. I would quite like a portuguese challenger, as it would improve my language skills as well as my chess.

friends, and aquaintances, have a bite to eat, pick up a bargain and generally have a good day out. I think my favorite market is Estoi, then Sao Bras flea market and finally Santa Catarina. I found your little piece on the market dates in the first edition very useful. Thanks for that. Good luck with the magazine. Margaret garage across the road, who must have lost some business. I think that we do need a modern shopping centre in Tavira. I don’t think it will be good news for Faro centre though. It will be the first shopping centre in the Algarve for people from across the border in Spain. In my opinion it is good to support the local shops in Tavira town as they add a certain charm. The type of shops which are normally in one of these centres are better kept out of our lovely town but I will definitely shop there, as well as in Tavira town in my favorite shops.

After reading Marianne’s letter in your last issue, I think it would be a great idea to have a group for single people to meet. I’m not thinking a singles’ club, more just a place to meet people socially Margaret, Tavira Dear Margaret, Great minds think alike! We have had a few people contacting us with the same suggestion and in response we are setting up a group called ‘Algarve buddies’. We hope to have meetings at various places across the East Algarve and have arranged our 1st meeting for the 20th March in Vila Real at LJ’s bar. Over the past 2 years whilst working outside I have been ‘infected’ by the Processionary Caterpillar. It seems many of my friends in the Algarve were not aware of the risks and discomforts until seeing my allergic reactions. I know the Tavira Camara is educating the local school children to alert them to the dangers so how about we do the same for us adults!

Estate Agents close their doors Real Estate Business License applications dropped significantly in the last year, despite estate agents chalking up an average increase of €10,000 on houses sold in the Algarve region. It adds that difficulties in obtaining mortgages increased and properties started to take longer to Contrarily, sell.according to estate agents, the average price of a sale has gone up by €10,000, from €130,000 to €140,000.

Illegal immigrantsarrestedinEasternAlgarve

It is reported that GNR and Immigration officers arrested seven illegal immigrants in the Eastern Algarve this week and officially warned a further five to leave the country immediately. SEF (Immigration Offices) carried out checks, in conjunction with the GNR, in the Vilamoura, Quarteira, Almancil and Loulé areas last Monday, verifying immigrants’ legal status in the country. Another ten people were told to leave the country voluntarily, and if they do not comply, they will receive official warnings of expulsion. Selling the Algarve as a Health Resort It has been predicted that the number of beds in private clinics offering specialised spa treatments and medical assistance that is cheaper than in tourists’ home countries will triple over the next five years. Treatments such as massages, thalassic therapy, shiatsu, acupuncture and Vichy baths are just a few of the most popular treatments currently available in the Algarve. These are aimed at tourists who are not in ill health, but are looking to improve their well-being. Experts say around 30 per cent of clients using five-star spa treatments are Portuguese, the remaining 70 per cent being mainly German, American, English, Scottish, Dutch and IndianSpanish.Ayurvedic massages, Hawaiian Lomi-lomi and Japanese Shiatsu treatments are also growing in popularity, but there is a future in traditional health tourism, because the Algarve is a perfect destination for convalescing. “With our climate, we have all conditions necessary to attract this type of tourist”, said, António Pina, President of the Algarve ERTA Tourism Board, explaining that the aim is to tie in conventional medical treatments with hotel accommodation for the patient/tourist and their family.

Caravan fire kills elderly Dutch couple Campers were woken by an explosion at around 6.30 am but by then the temperature prevented them from approaching close enough to attempt to control the fire. It is believed that the fire was gas bottle related, though the gas bottles were reported to be intact. The “well liked” couple have been regular visitors to the Algarve and were experienced caravanners and tended to spend up to four months at a time in the Theregion.caravan was totally destroyed in the blaze but there was minimal damage to other property and noone else on the site was injured by the fire. The incident is still under investigation at this time.

T he 24th and 25th of January saw the 3rd off-road rally organised by the Bombeiros of São Brás. This is an annual event that takes place in and around the hills behind São Brás and exploits the Bombeiros’ unrivalled knowledge of the tracks and trails that form this beautiful part of the eastern Algarve. As usual, the event took place over 2 challenging days. The first on Saturday was spent in the Fonte Feriea and at Arimbo and is not for the faint hearted! Extreme inclines, boulder strewn rivers running full with the recent rains and complex paths marked out on the valley sides provide a number of serious challenges to man and vehicle alike. This year around 25 vehicles braved this part of the event. They included cars, specialised off-road vehicles and for the first time, 4x4 buggies. We counted them out and we counted them back and although none were lost it wasn’t for the want of trying! Sunday was a full day spent in the countryside around São Brás Starting around 09:00 each car was provided with a rally style route guide that, in theory, should have enabled them to get from start to finish taking in along the way a number of local sites. This year the route included the Roman Road at Corte, where there was also the first of a number of special stage skill tests, Bolça, for a serious climbing challenge, Pero Sancho for the 2nd special skill test, the very swollen Ribeira de Odeleite, where one of the participants was almost swept away, Alto da Ameixeira and Monte Grande. A BBQ lunch was provided at about the half way stage by the Hunting Club de Pero de Amigos allowing the drivers to rest, relax and share their first Red Bull, before completing the final stages back to the Bombeiros station at around 17:00 where an evening dinner was provided.

The São Brás Bombeiros spent a weekend with 25 off-road vehicles testing their mettle! Written by Ian Lowe

The main route included muddy ascents and descents, steep shale inclines along many of the forgotten, (except to the Bomberios !) old cart tracks, where you have to marvel at the fortitude of the Portuguese farmers who would have created these routes many years ago as they passed on their way to market

Eastalgarve_Issue3.indd 8 3/3/09 15:37:36

info@eastalgarvemag.com Page 9 in their donkey carts. The route on Sunday was predominantly designed to offer the excitement of off-roading for the usual types of 4X4 cars and drivers. The Bombeiros, however, also include along the route a number of climbing and water based special stages that provide that extra adrenalin generating challenge for the more specialist vehicles as well as great viewing opportunities for the other participants and spectators alike. No prizes are awarded since everyone who participates is a winner simply through the Eventexperience.organiser since its conception, Daniel Pereira, one of the few full time Bombeiros in São Brás, commented that the main objectives of the event were:

Events Eastalgarve_Issue3.indd 9 3/3/09 15:37:50

•To get people from the community out into the local environment and into areas that, under normal circumstances, many would never •see.To provide an opportunity for normal people to have some fun whilst still getting the buzz from the challenging conditions.

•To create a fund-raising opportunity for some of the Bomberios’ sports related projects. “We really enjoy this event and plan to continue organising it for some time to come. We can only do it at this time of year because January is our quietest time; however it is still a formidable logistical challenge because it requires so many of the Bombeiros to get involved. We need to provide people to plan and design the route maps, man the key points on the day, provide mobile first-aid facilities, operate recovery facilities for the vehicles that get stuck and people to organise and cook the food. Without a great team we couldn’t do this and I want to thank everyone from the Sports Section for their help and Ifcommitment”youwantto look at more of the pictures from this event then go to Thesewww.bvsbras.com.sapo.ptphotosarereduced in size but if you would like a full sized version then please call Daniel on 961 769 441 to order.

Both mainstream and alternative medicine now agree that our bodies require essential nutrients from the things we eat and drink for normal metabolic function. To be truly healthy; not just disease free but vibrantly healthy, we need to consume foods that balance our body chemistry. On a scale of pH the blood can only be between 7.35-7.45. There are chemical reactions taking place in the body constantly in an attempt to keep blood pH in the safe zone to keep us alive. These are known as the pH buffering systems. These buffering systems need a good balance of alkaline minerals to neutralize acids. If we are not getting adequate mineral intake from the foods we eat, we are going to start having problems with these balancing systems. Eventually, our health will begin to suffer in many ways depending on our particular environment and genetic predisposition. It is important that we consume a diet that is approximately 70% alkaline and no more that 30% acidic. The process of life is, in general, acid producing. The body produces acid via by-products of the chemical reactions that support life. This normal acid in the body is eliminated via the lungs. This is a weak acid and is easily handled if you are relatively healthy. There is another form of acid stronger and cannot be eliminated by the lungs; it must leave via the kidneys. When we eat and our food travels through the digestive tract, it goes through several different processes until it is broken down and assimilated. At the end of this process there is left the mineral residue or “ash” of the food. The ash of animal protein, grains, and dairy is harmful and must first be buffered so it can be eliminated by the kidneys. These acid ash producers contain phosphorus and sulfur leaving behind phosphoric acid and sulfuric acid which are strong acids. On the other hand, the ash of vegetables and most fruits leave an alkaline ash that can be absorbed and stored by the body to aid in buffering in the future. The minerals left behind here are calcium, magnesium, potassium, and sodium which all add to the alkaline reserve instead of depleting it. Fruits and vegetables are the best way to alkalize your body. Green vegetables in particular are very alkalizing and healing to the body. You may have heard of wheatgrass juices and other similar things for healing any disease under the sun. Green leafy vegetables including wheatgrass contain chlorophyll which is a blood builder and strengthener. If you don’t have the time or inclination to grow wheatgrass and sprouts there are many powdered forms that are very please check our website www. drbethslater.com. Remember to add new foods to your diet slowly. Changing too much too soon can cause your body to react by detoxing quickly and causing uncomfortable symptoms. It’s best to start slowly and strive for the ideal balance.

March 28th sees Jouk’s 3rd Fashion show, Dinner & Dance in Sta Catarina.

Jouk needs no introduction from us to our resident expats, her fashion shows of contemporary clothing are a key attraction in the Algarve as was proved last year when we packed out our event hall leaving standing room only. These pictures show Jouk ́s gorgeous models at last year’s 2nd show; a fabulous poolside parade in the sunshine. Her friends happily volunteer to model her eclectic styles and accessories.

This Spring showing is strictly an all-ticket Dine and Dance, with a 3-course meal and live music for dancing until late. Put it in the diary: 28th March at 7.30pm, or better still, order your tickets now by phoning the Quinta da Fonte do Bispo on 281 971 484 and pick them up when you are passing. Please note, tickets must be purchased in advance. Location: Quinta da Fonte do Bispo on the EN270 midway between Tavira and Sta Catarina.

W hat is a wet room? It’s a totally water-proofed room enabling you to have a walk-in shower without an enclosure or shower tray. What drainage do I need? A wet room floor slopes towards an inset drain where water will run away. To create this gradient, a plywood sub-floor or a sloping shower tray former is installed and then tiled. Your floor will need to be strengthened to take the extra weight and must also be raised by about 5cm to allow for the waste fittings. How is the room waterproofed? A waterproof membrane is applied under the wall and floor tiles, similar to that used for swimming pools known as tanking. It’s critical to get a good seal between the walls and floors, as any leaks will be very expensive to put right later on. What type of tiles should I use? Ceramic or porcelain tiles are perfect as they’re hard wearing and water resistant. If you prefer stone, limestone and granite tiles are good options, though they’ll need regular sealing. Whichever you choose, opt for textured nonslip tiles. For a luxury option, solidsurface materials such as Corian are non-porous and seamless, so won’t need grouting. Who should install it? It’s best to employ a specialist company rather than a separate builder, plumber and tiler. Before choosing a company, ask to see examples of their work. The cost of installing a wet room is usually between €6,000 and €12,000. Enjoy a luxury bathroom with a stylish wet room

In 1994 my husband, our two young children and I spent an experimental year in Tavira. We already owned our home here and figured to retire to this quiet and sunny part of the world one day. The experiment, begun in June, consisted of morning Portuguese lessons for the kids followed by long afternoons at the beach. We’d eat a late dinner each night, then spend an hour or two at the café Anazu where Earl and I would sit outside in the warm night air, drinking wine and getting to know our neighbors, while the kids ate icecream and played with another little boy whose parents were also regulars of the café. The middle of September the weather cooled noticeably and Ann and Charlie started school in the Porta Nova neighborhood. They were ten and nine years old and were placed together in a 4th grade class, morning period. Sonia, their tutor from the summer, was an elementary school teacher without a position that year, and so each weekday afternoon she held homework sessions at her place. There were usually a few other youngsters receiving her help, so our two benefitted in many ways from that experience. They learned the language, made friends

Earl and I made a good start on learning the language that year, and we met and got to know lots of folks. I learned how to shop for groceries on a daily basis and how to keep house with much less electricity than I was used to having at my disposal. Earl enjoyed exploring the surrounding hills on his bicycle. In 12 months we’d made Tavira home. We left in June 1995, returning to our home in Washington State, and quickly resuming life as we’d left it. Within a year, though, we were talking about not waiting for the golden years of retirement to move to Tavira permanently. We decided instead to move here while the kids were still at home (13 and 12 by that time) and while Earl still had years of work ahead of him. He was able to arrange his schedule to give him three weeks each month with us here in Portugal, and that time together as a family really helped smooth the transition. Somewhere along the way I had the idea to open a bookshop. It’s almost 11 years later and everyone’s survived. Earl’s still commuting to work each month, still at the same place, and the kids, now 24 and 23, have both gone back to the states for university. They’ll be the first to tell you what fun it was to be a teenager in Tavira, and their schooling here equipped them well enough to be accepted at fine schools back in the US. Terry and Andy, both originally from Scunthorpe in north Lincolnshire run a successful charity shop in Sao Bras and also organise a weekly fun quiz and raffle at Quinta Fonte do Bispo, every Wednesday from 9pm. Terry previously worked at an oil refinery for 24 years and Andy has had many jobs both in shopkeeping and catering. They have lived here for 12 years, starting off in Arquevinho and now residing in Foupana near Moncarapacho. Terry brought with him his pet dog “Spot”, a Jack Russell. Whilst out walking him one day, Spot put his nose in the air and moved towards a stone wall. Terry moved a stone and behind it was a pure white kitten with one blue eye and one gold eye! She was named Topsy and turned out to be the first of many cats Terry and Andy have accumulated which now amounts to a grand total of 28! It was last year that Terry and Andy took over the running of the charity shop in Sao Bras and since its relocation it has been a great success. Terry told me that he cannot thank his voluntary helpers enough for their constant hard work, he could not do all this without them. He has a lot of support at the quiz with people selling the raffle tickets etc. and many bottles of wine have been given away as prizes! Proceeds from the shop and the quiz all go to the abandoned animals, of which there are so many as we all know. The kennel is based at Quintinha in Goldra, Almancil, and currently provides a home for several hundred cats and dogs. It is run by Snr Maria Lourdes Ingle and is a non-profit making welfare organization. Her main goal is helping mistreated and abandoned animals. The charity has operated for more than 8 years. Today Maria Lourdes gave me a brief statement

info@eastalgarvemag.com Page 17 about how the charity began. “In 2000, using proceeds from the sale of a villa I owned, I purchased about 3500 sq. metres of vacant land in the mountains of Goldra, near Almancil. After a good working life I decided I would fulfil my childhood dream of providing essential basic care for abused and neglected animals. For far too long these animals have been denied even the most minimal humane care. What does this say about us as human beings? I am now determined to improve animal welfare in the Algarve and to educate people that we are all responsible for the well-being of animals. I believe that animals have the right to live free from fear and free from cruelty. Firstly, we cleared the land of debris, then we built kennels for dogs and a sanctuary for cats. There are improvements to be made at the centre now. There is such an influx of abandoned and suffering animals that we need to enlarge the kennels. We have progressed already by establishing a hospital at the kennel, where sick animals can get the care and attention they need. The cats, dogs and even now other animals such as donkeys can roam freely and get the exercise they require. The animals are not confined to cages during the day. This helps with their social well being and allows a therapeutic freedom in a safe, semi-natural environment. As we all know, the Algarve can suffer from some icy temperatures, scorching heat and heavy bouts of rain, so a comfortable seasonal shelter is Iimperitive.havealso opened 2 charity shops, one in Quateira and the other in Sao Bras de Alportel. We are so proud of our all-volunteer workforce. As with any charity we are chronically short of revenue to carry out our mission. The shelter hosts 400 dogs and 250 cats, with daily enquiries to re-home more. Sadly the supply far outways the demand for these animals. We desperately need secure homes for them. We currently have 2 donkeys called Pepe and Renato. These donkeys had been abused in a circus. The usual fate for these donkeys are to be killed when they get too old and fed to the lions! They now have their own stalls and a safe range. They have never enjoyed such peace and freedom before. We also have a donkey named Salazar, abandoned on a field, a pony called Estrelihna and a mule called Boneca which I bought from her owners as they were badly mistreating her. All these animals are now receiving the best professional care and are responding beautifully. If you can help us in any way, the thank you will be like none you’ve ever Yoursheard. faithfully. Page 18 T avira is the capital city of a municipality with a 607,17 Km2 area and with about 25 thousand inhabitants. This municipality is divided into 9 Thereboroughs.isplenty of history in this municipality, both in the areas of archaeology and architecture (religious and military) as well as in culture and art. Being a borough of this municipality, Cabanas, a quiet fishing village, is also a piece of this historical and cultural Cabanascontext.wasrecently promoted to borough status on the 20th June 1997. Besides the village of Cabanas, located in the Natural Park of Ria Formosa, other little towns make up the total area of this borough. They are: Arrancada, Barroquinha, Barroca, Baleeira, Canada, Canadinha, Gameira, Gorgulho, Lacem, Morgadinho, Morgado e Pocinho de Oliveira. Its history is the same as the history of the fishing activities of the area. Its foundation dates from the year 1734, the same year as the setting up of the company “Armação dos Mares de Tavira”, whose main activity was tuna fishing. As a consequence of this fishing activity many huts were built in the East, at the entrance of the “Ria”, as a back-up for the local fishermen, for their nets and to lodge the Forworkers.about twenty years Cabanas was mentioned only as a seasonal lodging area. After the year 1757, when the first child ever born outside the fishing season was registered, the town received from the Council of Tavira the official name of “Cabanas de Armação”. From 1758 onwards, the first permanent inhabitants settled in the area and the first houses were Besidesbuilt. its natural heritage, Cabanas boasts an important example of Portuguese military architecture. São João da Barra Fortress was built under the order of Count Val de Reis, while D. João IV was the king of Portugal, a century before the setting up of the tuna fishing company, in 1656 or 1657. Its main purpose was to defend the seafront of the city of Tavira, as long as the “Guerras da Restauração” The local history of Cabanas Focus on... Nowadays, this fortress is used for nature and hosting tourism, showing a part of Portuguese military history and, surely, it is worth a visit. Another place of interest that deserves a visit is the Church of Our Lady of the Sea (Nossa Senhora do Mar), built in1994. This Madonna is the patron saint of the borough, and it reflects not only the connection of the village with the sea but also the fishermen and their families’ devotion. At present, most of the local population still depends on traditional fishing activities. However, in the seventies, when the first tourist resort, Pedras da Rainha, was built, this village turned itself to developing tourism, offering visitors a wide and rich variety of activities: wildlife (Ria Formosa); history; gastronomy; sports (golf-Quinta da Ria) and high quality lodgings.

Next month we will be Focusing on Manta Rota.

photovoltaic’s (PV). “Photo” refers to light and “voltaic” to electricity. Photons are converted to electrons, even on cloudy days. There are three main types of PV Monocrystalline:cells: made from thin slices cut from a single crystal of silicon. This has a typical efficiency of 15 per cent. Polycrystalline: made from thin slices cut from a block of silicon crystals. This has a typical efficiency of around 12 per cent. Thin Film: made from a very thin layer of semiconductor atoms deposited on a glass or metal base. This has a typical efficiency of 7 per cent. PV Systems can be retro fitted on existing roofs or easily incorporated into new builds and can be configured in many different ways. If roof space is an issue, another option is to ground mount them on a frame within your garden. It´s worth knowing that PV Systems installed in the 60´s are still working.

• Get tradeable 'Renewable Obligation Certificates' (ROCs)

• Grid connected PV solar panels can be used for homes, offices, and public buildings. As part of a grid connected system, you can save energy in combination with basic energy saving measures.

• No maintenance, with a long functional lifetime of 30+ years (no moving parts to wear out) because it is a solid state energy conversion process

L ast month we explained that Solar Hot Water is usually the best option for domestic installations; however, we should really consider the primary options that are available, just in case there are limiting factors in your application that we are not considering. The major alternatives would be Photovoltaic (PV) Solar Panels and Heat Pumps. This month we discuss PV Solar Panels. PV solar panels and solar hot water systems are commonly confused with each other, which is perhaps understandable given that both can be described as ‘solar power’. Last month we explained how water is heated as it flows through the Warm Water Solar Panels. This month we discuss the PV System, which includes the Solar Panels and the Electrical Components required to convert the electricity for domestic use (and possibly for future selling to the grid). These are micro-generators in that they produce electricity from daylight through a process called

Conclusion In our opinion, Warm Water Solar is far more cost effective as the ROI of a PV Solar System is far too long for the average household. It is suitable for cabins and caravans that do not have electrical supplies, but even then, the number of panels required for normal daily use is large and requires a five figure investment, making it unsuitable for most applications.

Should you invest in PV solar? That depends on how much electricity you consume on an annual basis in kWh. The Return on Investment (ROI) is often in the region of 30 years for a standard domestic system, using current energy prices, though we expect these prices to be raised significantly every year for the next decade at least. (Warm Water Solar Panel ROI is often less than five years). A PV system would generate approximately 750 kWh/ year per kW installed. So our basic 1 kW system would generate around 750 kWh per year, and a 5kW system will produce around 4500 kWh. The average household consumption is 3000 kWh per year. Thus on average, a 1kW system could supply nearly 25% of your electricity over the course of the year, depending on your consumption rates and it may be possible to do more, by carefully reducing your energy use.

The Bank of England Follows the Example of the USA and Japan u

Quantitative Easing in the pipeline

The mechanism for doing this is simple; the High Street Banks will “sell” their dubious assets to the Bank of England who will then pay the banks for these assets with money that currently doesn’t exist. It won’t be hard cash — it will be computer entries that merely increase the size of commercial banks’ accounts held there. All banks must keep reserves of cash at the Bank of England. The idea is that commercial banks will have more money to lend; banks will be more likely to lend to each other and to give credit to firms and individuals who will start spending money.

Eastalgarve_Issue3.indd 22 3/3/09 15:39:58

T he Central Banks (in our case the Bank of England) are gearing up to inject £100 Billion of cash into the economy. How can this be when there is only £50billion in cash in the entire system? True, the total money supply which includes savings and investments is nearly £2trillion, but the value of bank notes currently in circulation amounts to only £850 per person in the UK. So where do they get this money from? It ́s simple, they print it. You and I have to work for money, but they can just run the printing presses. In truth, it ́s even easier than that, they don ́t have to print any money, they simply make a keystroke on a computer and the money appears in the receiving bank ́s account. If you think that ́s a racket, they charge interest on the money they just magicked up, and they can vary the interest rate at OK,will!so they can do it, so they will. But why do they have to do this now? The Governor of the Bank of England fears that the country is sliding into a slump that may lead to a depression (like in the 30 ́s) and their main weapon, cutting interest rates, has not worked. Interest rates are down to 1% and to cut them to 0% would leave the Central Bank apparently toothless. So they have to take the drastic measure of flooding the economy with more money than currently exists i.e., Quantitative Easing.

Portugal to benefit from financial exodus from troubled economies.

Euro Watch Bank threatenproblemsstability

Last month s East Algarve Magazine put forward the argument that readers who hold mortgages when hyperinflation takes off are liable to benefit greatly as their debts get inflated away. Some readers have queried this statement, but the mechanism is too complex to be printed here, so we suggest that you check out pages 1 to 11 of this tutorial: http://tinyurl.com/bpdfl7

W hile Ireland, Italy and Greece are in danger of defaulting on their sovereign debts and/ or may be forced out of the Euro, rocketing debt costs are taking on a life of their own. Italy has just announced a frightening forecast jump of 10% in its debt. This is getting serious. Gabriel Stein from Lombard Street Research says a country like Italy could pass a law re-denominating debt into the new Lira, or whatever, but there would be a pre-emptive run on bank deposits long before then. “Anyone not desirous of losing money would presumably see the writing on the wall and transfer any funds beyond the reach of the state”. We here at the East Algarve Magazine believe that Portugal, and particularly the Algarve, will benefit from this exodus of money leaving collapsing economies (here read Italy, Greece or Ireland) and buying up property for long term investment. Portugal, not having experienced a significant asset price bubble, has less deflation to face than other West European economies.

A trillion dollars = $1,000,000,000,000. That’s 12 zeroes to the left of the decimal point. A trillion is a million million dollars. It would take a military jet flying at the speed of sound, reeling out a roll of dollar bills behind it, 14 years before it reeled out one trillion dollar bills. The adjacent chart illustrates the current U.S. Bailout plan versus the cost of other significant schemes and ventures.

Eastalgarve_Issue3.indd 23 3/3/09 15:40:02

Let ́s put these figures into perspective Our opinion? This is the fasttrack to hyper-inflation as being experienced by Zimbabwe under Robert Mugabe and in pre-Second World War Germany. Both actions led to the economies’ collapse as banknotes became worthless. In summary, the Bank of England is afraid of falling prices, which helps us, the little people, but severely harms the banking industry. So they are flirting with hyperinflation which could collapse our entire economy. Question: who is serving whom?

• A billion dollars ago was only 8 hours and 20 minutes, at the rate the U.S. Government spends.

WHAT’S A TRILLION DOLLARS?

t’s a tough call. When business is quiet and your mind is on paying next month’s bills, it’s easy to put advertising to the back of your mind and hope that next month things get better all on their own. This week I stopped by at a local car dealer and mentioned that I worked for this magazine. I offered him a small space for 50 Euros to advertise 3 cars which would include a picture of each and text of up to 30 words. His reply was “No thank you, nothing is selling at the moment”. So was he wrong not to advertise? Well, yes and no. Yes because every business, whether trading well or not, should advertise. It’s imperitive to maintain a high profile and ensure your company is at the top of your customers’ list when they come to need your service. Regular advertising will place your company into the public’s subconscious; the next time they need a mortgage, it’s Halifax they’ll think of and not you, thanks to the very annoying smiley chap in their TV advertising campaign. Ok, so why was he right to say “No”. Well, he wasn’t necessarily right. For all he knew, this magazine could be distributed to junior schools and old peoples’ homes in Lisbon, none of which are in the market to buy a new car, let alone one from the Algarve. On the other hand it could be placed in the waiting rooms of the garage down the road for people to read as they await to hear that their beloved Moggie has just failed its MOT. The answer is that the dealer should have asked a few more questions. Does this magazine reach my target audience and is the price Yourreasonable?choice of media needs to be the magazine, newspaper or website that your potential customers use, and one which is distributed within your area. Create a customer profile and think about where this person shops, socialises and frequents. A common mistake is for someone to place an ad, and after one month if there have been few or no enquiries, to suppose that their ad. has been a failure. Try to think of advertising as a campaign, a longer term project.

Another important aspect of your advertising is your logo. This gives potential customers an insight to the type of company they are dealing with. A professionally designed logo will not only be eye catching but says that you are serious and professional about your business. For further information about advertising in this publication, please see our details on the right hand page.

A window on the Guadiana T he trail begins in the Largo do Mercado in Azinhal, where you can park your car. It’s a very interesting walk with stunning uninterrupted views over the countryside, especially to the east, from where the Rio Guadiana can be seen as well as the adjacent hills and Thevalleys.landscape consists of cistus, dry land orchards and the scattered trees (wild olives, carob and almond trees). The fauna is varied and in the areas of scrub and orchards you can see species such as the European rabbit, the red legged partridge, the Iberian hare, the Dartford warbler, the azure-winged magpie, the blackbird, the Thekla lark, the turtle dove, the golden oriole and the redbacked shrike. At the end of the descent to Várzea das Almas, you continue to the right. In this area, to the south of the gully, the riverside vegetation is welldeveloped and includes some ash-groves. When you reach Carepa, a climb starts to the right which leads back to the starting point. On this path, the scenery consists of vineyard, fig trees and carob trees Do not forget to take water, your camera and binoculars if you have them. PINOCCHIO’S NOSE Unbelievably long and slender fruits with a strong pungency and excellent for hot sauces or for drying to make powders. Fruits ripen dark bottle green to red and are high yielding bushy plants.

The first records of peppers grown in Europe date from around AD1500, and soon they were widely grown. The hot varieties were dried, powered and then used as a substitute for true pepper, the tropical climber Piper nigram, then a very expensive import from the East Indies. Peppers also became widely grown in Eastern Asia where they play an important role in the cuisine of India, Malaysia and the southern parts of HotChina.peppers, Chillis, and cayenne peppers are usually rather small and red when ripe. The degree of hotness depends on the presence of capsaicin, which varies according to the variety and is affected by the climate. Hot weather conditions produce hotter peppers becoming hotter and sweeter as they ripen with the seeds being hotter than the flesh. The large, hot varieties may be elongated as in the ‘Anaheim’, bell shaped as in ‘Poblano’ or yellow when ripe as in the ‘Hungarian wax’. Sweet pepper, Pimento, and Bell peppers are the type of peppers most popular in temperate countries and are widely grown in greenhouses in Northern Europe, and in the open in Southern Europe, the Middle East and in North America. The large, hollow fruits are generally red when ripe, but may be yellow, and there are even some varieties which are blackish-purple when Peppersmature.arefast growing annuals, and best grow in drier parts of the tropics and in warm summer weather. In temperate climates seed should be sown under glass in March or early April, the young plants can be put into pots when they are about 8cm tall and kept as warm as possible until the hot weather has arrived, Stuff

Native to Mexico and Central America, both hot and mild peppers are derived from the species Capsicum annuum. Seeds of peppers have been found in archaeological deposits in Tehuacan, in Mexico, dating from around 7000 BC, but these may well have been of fruits collected from the wild. The earliest records of the cultivation of peppers date from about 2000 years later, and peppers are illustrated on pre-Columbian ceramics.

HOT TEPIN A native Mexican shrub, tepin is one of the world’s hottest chilli peppers. Maturity is slightly later than other peppers, as the fruits concentrate their power and spice.

RED CHILLI

The Piri Piri chilli is the name given to the African birdseye or African devil. It is a small and extremely spicy variety with the plant growing bushy and up to 120cm in height. The fruits are generally tapered to a blunt point and measure up to 2.5cm long. The immature fruit is green turning to bright red or sometimes purple when ripe.

NAGA JOLOKIA

SERRANO A Mexican chilli, generally eaten green or canned. Easy to grow in greenhouses in a cold climate and produces a prolific crop on tall, much branched and hairy plants.

CAYENNE With long, Slender and curved pods, ripening bright red and very hot. When dried and powdered this & similar cultivars produce the well known Cayenne pepper.

HEATWAVE A cayenne pepper which is a mixture of fruits containing reds, yellows and oranges. Beautifully ornamental with a mind-blowing flavour experience. PRAIRIE FIRE Called the windowsill pepper. The fruits may be small but are very hot. Bushy plants give a non stop summer crop of hundreds of small, conical, creamy green fruits turning red when ripe.

Alternatively the young plants can be kept in pots until 12cm tall and then hardened off and planted into frames in late June. Feeding is beneficial for building up a good sized plant, but can be reduced when fruiting. Poor growth outdoors is usually a result of cold weather, but plants grown in greenhouses can suffer from grey mould such as botrytis which will kill the stems so good air circulation is needed to prevent Althoughthis. there are a multitude of varieties of chillis and peppers, we are familiar with just the few that have readily available seeds. Mother’s day

at the

Mother’s day is fast approaching us this month. We thought we might give you some history about mothering Sunday and how it is celebrated around the world. This year Mother’s day is celebrated on 22nd March, but in other countries such as the US it is the 10th May. Mother’s day is always celebrated in the middle of lent which begins from ash Wednesday and lasts until Easter Sunday. Mothering Sunday falls on a different day each year and sometimes even a different month. No-one is absolutly certain exactly how the idea of Mothering Sunday began, but we know that on this day about 400 years ago, people who lived in small villages made a point of going, not to their local church but to the nearest big church to what was called the Mother Church. Some would go to worship in their nearest cathedral. These days most young children pay respect to their mothers by making a card and giving a gift of flowers for example. It is quite popular for adults to take their mum out for Sunday lunch. Mothering Sunday also used to be known as Simnel Sunday or refreshment Sunday, because of the tradition of baking Simnel cakes. These were baked in honour of the mothers. It is basically a fruit cake, with a layer of marzipan on top and decorated with marzipan Theballs.sprit of Mother’s day is the same the world over. People take the opportunity to appreciate the loving care and upbringing that they had from their mother. In Portugal this year Mother’s day is celebrated on the 3rd may. Many other countries follow the day that falls in the US and copy its traditions. It is quite usual for children to give flowers, in the UK the most popular are roses, carnations and chrysanthiums. For gift ideas you could try www. find/me/a/gift.co.uk with an easy site to navigate and a box to click on with an option of young or mature mother. Back in England I would take every opportunity to get out to a nice lake or river for peace, quiet and quality fishing, my main target species being carp. This passion has taken me the length & breadth of England & occasionally further afield. As a young boy, nothing was more exciting than getting my first rod and going to a small lake fishing for roach and perch with my uncle. I loved the sport instantly and have never looked back. Almost 25 years later I’ve collected many rods and travelled many miles looking for the next place to enjoy my favourite past time, I even still own that first rod I was bought all those years ago. I’ve learned many new techniques along the way and have taken part in small matches and even national competitions. My passion never dwindled and for years I have dreamed of owning my own fishery. After all, what better way to enjoy your favourite sport than to do it for a living? When first coming to Portugal on holiday, I was immediately intrigued to find out if there was any good fishing here. I was shocked to find that there was virtually nobody who could tell me about carp fishing. I managed to find a couple of people in the north of Portugal who told me that once you explore and find the lakes here there is some fantastic fishing to be had. The carp in Portugal thrive in the crystal clear waters and the warm climate. There are reports of carp growing to over 70lb, quite a remarkable size. As fishing for carp is very new here, most of these fish have never seen a bait and hook. They fight like tigers, even the small ones. Another of my favourite species is barbel, a remarkable river fish that can grow to 40lb here. These too fight like nothing you have ever seen before and make for a truly incredible catch. Early in 2008, my family and I made the decision to move to the Algarve. We now live in Tavira with our 2 young daughters and I decided to continue my search for great fishing. I found that there are many here who love to fish but had the same problems as myself, getting information. This gave me the idea to set up a guided fishing company, and we embarked on what proved to be a very eventful journey. Even though my wife has never so much as held a rod never mind used one, she has supported and helped me all the way. Trying to negotiate the Portuguese bureaucracy to obtain licenses, and find out about permissions was not easy, but we continued to work, driven by my desire to be sitting at the side of a beautiful lake, rod in hand, with not a care in the world. Now, 3 months later and thanks to a lot of help from the people we have met since moving here, we have finally got the business I have always Carp and Barbel fishing in the East Algarveinfo@eastalgarvemag.com Eastalgarve_Issue3.indd 34 3/3/09 15:41:29

More and more countries are realizing the benefits of holding their midwinter training camps in the Algarve and the East Algarve is certainly reaping the benefits of improved venues. The international between Portugal & Finland at the Algarve Stadium on the 11th February gave the crowd of 20,000 an opportunity to salute FIFA World Player of the Year 2008, Cristiano Ronaldo. It was fitting that Ronaldo scored the only goal of the game from the penalty spot late in the game. On the same day Wales lost narrowly to Poland by the same margin at Vila Real S. Antonio. The 16th Annual Algarve Women’s Football Cup takes place at venues throughout the Algarve including Olhão, Vila Real S. Antonio and the Algarve Stadium from the 4th to 11th March. World Champions USA will be defending the title they have won on four occasions in the past five years. Other countries competing include last year’s runners-up Denmark, Germany, Sweden, China, Finland, Norway, Iceland, Portugal, Poland, Wales and Austria. The standard of football is extremely high and competitive. If you have never been then give it a try and we are sure you will not be Sportingdisappointed.Clube Olhanense strengthened their squad with three new signings during the transfer window and, despite losing three consecutive games during February, remain in 2nd place in Liga Vitalis behind Santa Clara from the Azores. There is a feeling in the south that match officials seem to ‘favour’ teams from the north and with three dubious red cards in three matches the Olhanense fans certainly would not argue. The standard of refereeing is inconsistent and at the halfway mark (120 games) this season 646 yellow cards and 56 reds had been brandished. Several of Olhanenses recent matches were televised which highlighted the problem

MONTHLY COMPETITION

Forthcoming Events

Each month I will be running a competition with a golf related question. This month’s question: Arnold Palmer, one of the greatest golfers of all time, won every major but one. Can you name it? Email me with your answer: karl@linksgolfeurope.com Golf cap for the winner. info@eastalgarvemag.com

By the time you read this February will be over & the run up to the real stuff will have begun in earnest. Not too long before the first of the Majors, the Masters at Augusta Georgia, where you will witness the boys will battle it out on some of the most difficult putting surfaces on the planet. Before that we have the Open de Andalucia in Seville on March 29th, a PGA European tour event with former winners including the likes of Sñr Lee Westwood. The first prize of approximately 1,000,000€ ensures the event attracts some of the finest golfing talent around. To eclipse all of these however, is the LinksGolf 3rd Am-Am tournament held over 4 different courses in Spain & Portugal from 26th – 30th March. The prize fund is slightly lower but you can bet you’ll have more fun! For further details check out www.linksgolfeurope. com Enjoy your golf & see you again in April, Karl.

A lighter look at golf Glory for Rory So how was your golf in the month of February? A few birdies, or perhaps even an eagle, or was it more of a case of bogies & doubles. For one young Irishman it all came good on February 1st in Dubai...

Big Daddy Driver There can be few industries other than golf where a new product seems to appear daily claiming to dramatically improve your game, all endorsed by a big name. You’ve heard it all before “By the time you have watched this 30 second commercial you too will have reduced your handicap to single figures”…GIVE ME A BREAK!!! So just when you thought the game was beginning to take itself a little too seriously along comes a guy called John Buell with the “Big Daddy Driver”. This is hilarious - It’s a driver with a built in lawn strimmer! Totally illegal to use in tournaments but will have your playing partners in bits laughing. All for a princely sum of $49. Check it out on www. bigdaddydriver.com And just for the record I would like to state I have NO connection to these guys whatsoever, I just thought it was worthy of note, good luck to ‘em!

Playing in the 20th Dubai Desert Classic, Ireland’s Rory Mc Ilroy finished one shot ahead of England’s Justin Rose on a superb 19 under par – a score which incidentally matches his age! For his efforts he picked up a whopping $419,000 some of which I hope he uses to pay off his Mum & Dad’s mortgage. For those of you who aren’t familiar with the name, take note, you are almost certainly seeing the rise of a new star. Tiger’s Comeback Out since June 16th last year, Tiger Woods has announced to the world his intention to return to competitive play after reconstructive knee surgery. Veteran golfer Lee Trevino was recently asked on U.S. TV what a “solidly repaired knee might mean for his game” his reply “ The rest of you guys out there are in more trouble”. That kind of sums it up for me. Whilst he is not my favourite character in golf you simply cannot deny how good this guy is. If I was to question whether he would return as good a player as before it would have nothing to do with his knee, it would be that he became a father for the second time in February when his wife gave him his first son, Charlie. Now as a father myself I have experienced the joys & also the amount of sleep you can expect with a newborn so let’s see shall we?
