At a meeting held on February 22, the PROBAAL group was officially reformed with António Dário de Sousa Viegas taking the position of Memberspresident. stated that they would “move forward using new tools and the experience of the past” in their fight against the quarry. The first protest against the quarry by members is due to take place on March 5 outside Tavira Câmara. “We are hoping for between 20 and 30 people to turn up. The protest will be a part of a sustained presence outside the Câmara every week, so nobody will be able to forget that the problem is ongoing and will not go away,” said Amanda McGregor, assistant to the PROBAAL board.

I t was confirmed this week by the State Secretary for Territorial Ordaining and Cities, Fernanda do Carmo, that the demolition of the buildings on Fuzeta Island will begin. Many homes have already been rendered uninhabitable by rising sea levels. Some houses are still intact but are also being demolished due to the fact that they will deteriorate in a few years. The work is part of the Plan for Coastal Ordaining (POOC), which also includes improving dunes along the coastline. The work should be completed by April to, “guarantee that there is as little interference as possible with beach activities and tourists, who are very important to the region”. Surprised medical staff are now documenting his recovery from the coma, during which he suffered several lifethreatening complications. Faro Hospital director, Helena Gomes, said, “he has been though very complex situations, from cardio-respiratory failure, to multiple organ failure”; situations that have now been overcome. So far the patient is responding to orders, can read and understand, but has no active movement in his limbs. The man has yet to be assessed for brain Nevertheless, damage. Faro medical staff are hoping his recovery will endure, and have said they will be “communicating their findings to collegues in other countries”. “We are all working to get his movement back, so that he will once again be able to eat, swallow, talk, move, and voluntarily control his gestures” Helena Gomes said, claiming she was “confident of a progressive recovery”. Hopefully the findings of this “miracle” recovery will be helpful in treating others with the virus.

Club captain Les Emery explains; Each year the captain of Benamor, has the opportunity to choose a charity for his year. If we were going to raise money, I wanted to make sure that the charity benefitted by a decent amount, so I asked the owner of Benamor, Goncalo Dias, if he would donate a year’s free golf membership for one person, in return for being responsible for naming his choice of charity. He readily agreed and chose Uma Porta Amiga in Fonte Salgada. When my wife Carol and I visited this children’s home we were pleased that we could help these children who needed our support and we would do all we could to raise money for them by holding raffles, through members’ kind donations of raffle prizes, too numerous to name individually. I do, however, thank you all from the bottom of my heart for your support. The total amount raised from all of our efforts and including the free membership draw donated by the owner Goncalo Dias, came to €3,500. I hope that we have helped this needy charity to some extent by making life just a little bit easier and to give those children a chance in Leslife.

A special place with stunning views. Meet the young family behind Senna’s Bar and Bistro.

Senna’s bar-bistro in Santa Barbara is the creation of Dutch couple, Bart and Maaike. Maaike was born into a family of caterers in the village of Wijk aan Zee, 15 minutes from Amsterdam, on the coast. She grew up and worked there until she was 21. Bart comes from a family who grow and export flowers and bulbs in Beverwijk, close to Maaike’s home village. At 17, Barts first job was in a bar in Castricum. After that, he went to work in Amsterdam and continued to work in bars and restaurants. In 1995, he started his own bar, and in 1997, a beach pavilion in the village Wijk aan Zee. The bar was opposite Maaike’s house, and eventually their paths crossed. Many years later they fell in love and the rest as they say, is history. In 2001 they decided to leave Holland and, build a new life in Portugal. They opened a bar in Almancil, and Maaike worked in the restaurant Florian in Quinta do Lago. After all these years of experience, they decided it was time for a new challenge. They found the location for the project in Santa Barbara de Nexe, Sítio do Canal. A nice Bar Bistro with a stunning view over land and sea from Olhão to Almancil. The bistro is named after their adorable one year old son ‘Senna’ and has been decorated in a classy, modern style, but it has got a very warm and friendly feeling. There is also a special children’s corner, ideal for young families. You can have a drink at the bar, take in the views on the sunny terrace or, in the winter, sit by the cosy fireplace. There is also a separate smoking area. Everybody is welcome for just a drink, some tapas and /or a meal. the average for a 3 course meal is €23,50. On the menu you’ll see the famous (Dutch) saté, a fantastic entrecote of Angus, and a picanha of wagyu (Kobe-style) beef and much

ver longed to lie on a bed of nails but thought — if it only came in Althoughorange?atfirst glance this looks painfully strange, once you understand the history behind ‘The Shakti Mat’, it makes a lot of sense and can be extremely effective. And someone once said, “no pain, no gain”! I have had great fun trying this and experiencing a totally different way to achieve deep relaxation and an enhanced meditative state, not to mention a back that looks like a pin cushion. Voted as Christmas present of the Year in Sweden 2009, let’s find out more about it. What is The Shakti Mat? This is the more modern, user friendly version of the Indian Bed of Nails. It contains a total of 230 plastic discs with 27 points on each. This gives a total of 6,210 points of stimulation. Where did it originate from? The bed of nails dates back thousands of years to Indian mysticism. It was used not as a macho toy, but as a tool for healing the body and releasing emotional, physical and mental blockages. What can you use this for? Many things including relaxation, chronic fatigue, aching backs, insomnia, meditation and yoga.

Because of the size and lightness of the mat, you can use it virtually anywhere, on holiday, at work and at home, to refresh and reenergize your daily life. How often should you use the mat? As with any therapy or exercise, regularity is the key to success. With regular use you can experience a longer sense of ease and wellbeing. So how do you use it?

What sensations do you feel when you lie on the mat. Initially you feel slightly uncomfortable lying on 6000 points, but within seconds your body relaxes and you feel your weight becomes evenly distributed over the mat and you forget it is there. You feel very warm and relaxed. It is from this relaxation that your body stimulates a healing process. Where can you buy the mats? Telephone 910 050 017 and speak to Margot Engström, André Baptista or Gunnel Levin. Email shaktiportugal@gmail.com

The mat can be used on the entire body. From the spine, nerves radiate out and reach all parts of the body, which means that the back treatment can affect the entire body. Initially laying on the mat on your back for 10 to 15 minutes may be enough, but gradually increase to 20 to 40 minutes. Placing your feet on the mat works on the reflexology zones, which in turn will have an effect on the entire body. Placing the mat over a rolled up towel and resting your neck on it can help relieve tension in the shoulders and neck. For more ideas on how to use this look at www.ShaktiMat.com

The colour orange imparts energy, satisfaction and warmth. It is the colour of our sexual chakra called Svadisthana and is thought to help correct imbalances in this chakra. The colour green imparts calmness and harmony. It is a healing colour and is the colour full of life, as around us in nature. It also promotes balance of the body and soul. What else do you do here in Fuzeta? André and Margot are based in the heart of Fuzeta, and run a clinic called ‘From Feet to Head’. Here you can enjoy Swedish therapeutic massage, acupressure, trigger point and deep tissue massage, Thai massage and many other therapeutic treatments for the whole body.

Welcome to Caliço Parks first newsletter in the East Algarve magazine. We are delighted to be working with the park, and welcome the residents as readers.

More observant residents will have noticed the new barriers in place at the entrance, this is both for esthetics and improved security. We also have the new security code entry system up and running. Road improvements Trials are underway to find a new road surface to improve the roads within the park. A sample of the proposed surface can be viewed on the drive at Mr and Mrs Denton’s property. Mazda for maintenance You will notice a new Mazda truck out and around the park. This has been purchased in order to help maintenance within the park.

A fond farewell to Denise Denise has decided to pursue her own project, and it is with regret that we see her leave us. We would like to thank her for her dedication and commitment she has shown the park during the time she has been with us. Denise says “My leaving Caliço is the turning of a page in my life, and I am looking forward to a new project. I would like to thank all the residents and staff for their support and kindness over the years. I will however not be moving far so will be sure you in the village!” We wish her all the best in her new ventures.

C ali ç o Pa r k AL G A R V E PORTUGAL This month I wanted to explain a little bit about hearing loss, and how it can be categorized by where or what part of the auditory system is damaged. There are three basic types of hearing loss: Conductive Hearing Loss: This type of loss is the result of disorders in either the outer or middle ear, which prevent sound from getting to the inner ear. Voices and sounds may sound faint or distorted. Some of the common causes of a conductive hearing loss are infections in ear canal or middle ear, wax build-up, foreign objects in the ear and otosclorosis. Sensorineural Hearing Loss: This occurs when inner ear nerves become damaged and do not properly transmit their signals to the brain. The most common complaint is that people seem to mumble and that they can hear but not understand what is being said. Ageing is the most common cause of this type of hearing loss. In addition to advancing age, sensorineural hearing loss can also be caused by excessive noise exposure, viral infections, ototoxic drugs, diabetes and can also be hereditary. Mixed Hearing Loss: This loss is a combination of both conductive and sensorineural hearing loss at the same time. Both the middle and inner ear are involved. This hearing disorder can also occur when a person first has a permanent sensorineural hearing loss, and then also develops a conductive loss (For example, a person who already had a permanent sensorineural loss gets a middle ear infection creating a greater hearing Throughoutloss).the month of March we are offering free hearing screenings – a simple 5 minute test that will confirm if you have a hearing loss and what type it is, for more information call me at CAT-Centro Auditivo de Tavira on 289 090 663.

Residents will have noticed that the restaurant is currently being refurbished. Works include redecoration and addition of a new bar which, hopefully, will be completed by the end of this month.

people, living in huts made of wood, reeds and straw on the beach. The museum in Olhão recently had an exhibition showing the restoration of Olhão during the 200 years following the French invasion. It currently displays original documents and artifacts from the opening of the market buildings. Olhão is a town of many ‘faces’ - if you approach from the fishing port side it looks, and is, very industrial and, unless you are particularly interested in fishing boats and warehousing it doesn’t look very attractive.

However, around the corner from the dock, the road runs along the water front. If you are driving into Olhão, there is plenty of parking along this water front road - the stretch in front of the town is pay and display, but go a little further, and just before the road splits into a dual carriageway, there is a free carpark on the water front side. On the opposite side is the Olhão marina village which is now near completion. The five star hotel is due for completion in May, and we have heard, from a council spokesperson, of plans to build a new

I t has been one year since our “focus on” Olhão, so we thought we’d see what was new and upcoming for this charming fishing town. For those of you who don’t know, Olhão is a major port and actually the largest fishing port in the Algarve. It is full of character with Moorish-style houses, an influence from the commercial links with Africa. Although Olhão only really became a town of note in the 19th century, it was first mentioned in 1378. At this time it would have been a very small fishing settlement of a handful of

aquarium next to the site, which will display the flora and fauna of the Ria Formosa. More plans for this year include a skate park and a public garden with picnic area. There are two more purpose built warehouses planned for the docks, one solely for the canned fish industry and the other for the processing of fresh fish and seafood, both creating much needed employment opportunites for the locals. If you head into the centre of Olhão you may have seen the newly opened Ria shopping centre, complete with shops, food court, cinema and ample parking. There are two market buildings side by side along the water front, which are a ‘must visit’ for the huge variety of extremely fresh fish and seafood straight from the port and the vast array of locally grown, fresh fruit and vegetables. If you arrive at 5 or 6 in the morning, the fish are still alive, they don’t get fresher than that! During August, Olhão hosts a seafood festival which is extremely popular and was attended by 60,000 people last year, and celebrates its silver anniversary this year.

P eople buy properties 365 days a year, but especially in springtime when the Algarve is looking its best. The sunny, though mild climate to view properties and the wish to have the “new home” ready for use by summer time is only one of the reasons for an increased number of buyers during this period. If you are selling your property or considering putting it on the market, to benefit from the upcoming season to sell your house it is important – now more than ever, to get the asking price right. In general, the average time to sell a property has increased due to the economic slowdown. If you have your property on the market, this is the time to take a hard look at the asking price and, if needed, to make adjustments. The larger number of properties for sale has also led to more competition and a prospective buyer has a lot more alternatives to compare in spring 2010 than in any of the previous two years. This especially affects re-sales that have to compete with many brand-new properties throughout the Algarve.

Page 21 as it is most likely you have purchased your property at a more favourable exchange rate. In addition, you should invite a couple of agents to give you an indication of the current market value. Their knowledge about the market and actual achieved sales prices allows them a better insight than you can ever achieve yourself, by purely looking at the asking prices of properties. Most agents are willing to make an evaluation free of charge, as long as you decide to list your property with them. It will either reassure you, or introduce a new point of view. Should you decide to lower the asking price, do not make a common mistake by lowering it in small increments. One large reduction makes a bigger impact. Regardless of your situation, leave a fairly broad margin for negotiation. The past 12 months have demonstrated that buyers try to negotiate more than ever but keep in mind that your asking price should not be too far away from an offer you would accept. If priced right, a buyer will be aware the asking price is realistic. While still trying to get a good deal, they already know a low offer has little chance of success. An additional advantage is more viewings from buyers who previously may have considered your property to be outside of their budget. Moreover, in the Spring of 2010, there are signs that the market is picking up gradually. There are a many good reasons to buy a property that is under construction. One is that the property is sold at a discounted rate to the finished market price. Also the buyer often gets the opportunity to make decisions on layouts and finishes during the remaining construction phase.

• The areas of Portugal constructing for tourism are far smaller, and more restricted, than in other European countries. This helps to keep property prices and resale values much more stable.

Buying off-plan or under constuction

In most cases, properties that are sold whilst still under construction are bought as turnkey developments. This means that the developer finishes the construction. However sometimes deals are made where the investor buys the development as it is, and finishes it himself.

The alternative way to buy. Portugal and the Algarve are both excellent places to invest in off-plan property for many reasons.

• The Algarve has the best weather in Europe, and miles of first class beaches and golf courses. In addition to the above, the Portuguese government has officially named ‘quality tourism’ as one of the new main incomes of future Portugal. This means the government will continue to invest heavily into improved infrastructures and facilities, to attract tourists from Europe and beyond About Off-Plan Properties: Off-plan property is bought based on drawings of the project/development. Purchasing off-plan property offers substantial financial benefits to the investor, with units sold at around 20-25% less than the turnkey price. In a buoyant market the property will then gain in value during the remaining construction. Throughout the property construction, investors will have the chance to buy any remaining units. The purchase price will increase as the properties near completion. Therefore buying off-plan, which is the earliest development stage, offers the best return on investment. Buying at this stage also gives investors the chance to snap up prime locations in the development. Under construction

• The political situation throughout the Algarve and Portugal is stable, and crime rates are very low compared to European neighbours.

Our hot tips for properties currently under construction in the East Algarve include the Algarve Wine Spa which is a breathtaking five star development in Tavira unlike anything else currently on the market due to it’s unique aparthotel and spa complex. Another stunning development which has been hard to miss, is the Village Marina in Olhão project with amazing town centre location with uninterrupted seaviews unlike anything else on the Algarve. To conclude, however, our biggest tip is to inform your local agent that you are interested in purchasing off-plan. This way, as soon as any new developments come on line, you will be first to know about it. Right now there are some great developments in planning that are due for launch this summer, and the only way you will be first to know about them is to register your interest.

Cultivation Most varieties will just sit there well after the last frost if the night temperature is less than 55 degrees. The more sun they get, the more robust the plant, the more they’ll flower, and of course those flowers are the source of the fruit. Water well and deeply. Aim for uniformly moist, but not soggy, soil. It makes all the difference in how well your plants will do. The following may help you with your plants: Tomatoes also like raised beds. The warmer soil is conducive to better growth. Unless there is a reason to not use them, they are definitely the way to go.

GROWING TOMATOES

Who would believe that it was the tax man who answered the age old question...Fruit or Vegetable?

An interesting aspect of tomato history is the classic debate: Is the Tomato a Fruit or Vegetable? I guess that depends on whom you are asking. By definition, a fruit is the edible plant structure of a mature ovary of a flowering plant, usually eaten raw; some are sweet like apples, but the ones that are not sweet such as tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, etc. are commonly called vegetables. Botanists claim that a fruit is any fleshy material that covers a seed, or seeds, whereas a horticulturist’s point of view would be that the tomato is a vegetable plant. Until the late 1800’s the tomato was classified as a fruit to avoid taxation, but this was changed after a Supreme Court ruling that the tomato is a vegetable and should be taxed accordingly. When all is said and done, the history of the tomato has classified it as a poisonous, beautiful, plant, a tax-avoiding fruit, and a taxable vegetable. Nonetheless, the tomato is the most popular vegetable in America and enjoyed by millions all over the Tomatoesworld.belong to the genus Lycopersicon (Solanaceae family). Evidence supports the theory that first domesticated tomato was a little yellow fruit, ancestor of L. cerasiforme, grown by the Aztecs of Central America who called it ‘xitomatl’ (pronounced zee-toemá-tel), meaning plump thing with a navel, and later called tomati by other Central American tribes. Aztec writings mention tomatoes were prepared with peppers and salt, likely to be the original salsa recipe. The tomato’s actual origin is thought to be Peru in South America where it grew wild (like a weed) several thousands of years before making its way north to Central America.

The basics of growing tomatoes are relatively simple. Tomatoes like warmth, sun, and plenty of water. They can be grown in the ground and take well to containers, so they can be grown just about anywhere. It may look like work, but once you pop the first ripe fruit into your mouth you’ll be hooked.

NEW TO THE EASTERN ALGARVE Our veggie boxes tend to change on a weekly basis to reflect what’s in season. We suggest that these boxes are suitable for the number of people shown below, based on a week’s use. If you are a vegetarian then we recommend that you go up a box size.

As with most things, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Buy disease-resistant plants if you can. Heirlooms may not indicate any disease resistance, but that most likely means they haven’t been lab tested for pathogens. Check some of the gardening message boards on the Web for tomato gardeners in your region; you may be able to determine which varieties are more resistant to prevalent diseases or problems in your area. Experience is also a good teacher, which is another reason for growing a several different types of tomatoes. You can prevent foliage disease by keeping the leaves dry, which means watering at the base of the plants, not overhead. Also, a southeastern exposure is ideal because it is both warm without being hot, and the early morning sun dries dew so leaves don’t remain damp for long. Also, but no less important, don’t water your tomato plants at night unless you are using a drip irrigation Spacesystem. plants so they are well ventilated and not too crowded.

For indeterminant varieties, build a trellis structure or use a tall bamboo teepee to which you can tie the growing vines. Tomato cages may not be big enough. Bushy varieties do fine with tomato cages. Transplant about two weeks after the last frost date, if at all possible. The earlier you can get your plants moved into the garden the better, however, cool or damp weather is not the tomato’s friend. Keep soil moist and avoid letting it dry out. Uneven watering can cause a host of problems including blossom end rot. If you intend to fertilize, use a 510-5 fertilizer and be sparing. Over fertilization is worse than no fertilization at all. Pinch off suckers that form at the joint between the stem and branch. No point in wasting valuable plant energy on pointless growth. Soil Tomatoes are pretty tough and will grow in just about any type of soil. However, the richer the soil the more likely you will be able to raise beautiful tomatoes organically. Washed dairy compost is nutrient rich and won’t burn young plants. It holds water well too, which is vital for tomato growth and happiness. Mulch to retain moisture with straw. Some folks like to add moisture granules to their soil and pots to retain moisture...especially when they might miss a day or two of watering. Disease and prevention Some tomato varieties are more susceptible to fungus, bacteria, and nematodes than others. And such vulnerability is usually compounded by your growing zone and soil type. Commercial varieties usually indicate on the tag, with a designation like VFN for example, if they are resistant to such systemic diseases as verticillium wilt, fusarium wilt, or Ifnematodes.yourtomato plants get sick and die quickly, the chances are good you have some type of systemic disease. If they lose all their leaves or leaves get curled, yellow, or just drop, it’s more likely to be one of the many foliage diseases. Only a professional can diagnose the problem for sure. You may be able to diagnose the problem by contacting your county extension service or through a reliable nursery.

Breakingthemould Tackle mould in an environmentally friendly way.

Page 36 info@eastalgarvemag.com Homes Rain, rain and more rain. The endless downpours are starting to produce a variety of different coloured mould and mildew like substances on my walls, ceilings, ornaments, wardrobes, even my shoes! My shoes were covered in green fur and my bedroom walls covered in black spots. I was concerned for my family’s health, I’ve heard this kind of problem can irritate the lungs for asthmatics, but I’ve also read that it can cause depression and tiredness. After speaking, or should I say ranting, about the problem to everyone I meet, a number of solutions have been put my way, for example, a humidifier, very good for drying out the damp but want I needed to do was to effectively remove this stuff. Most of the advice given involved spraying and dabbing the mould with cheap bleach and eventually painting over the areas with anti mould paint. I toyed with the idea for sometime, but could

Furniture packages a speciality from €4,599 not endure sleeping in a bedroom stinking of bleach and, with no break in the weather, there is no sign of the problem fixing itself, so I decided to look into other environmentally friendly, non chemical ways of tackling the dreaded black stuff. I researched on the internet and found that there are several products you can use to kill mould and mildew. The first is tea tree oil, widely available, and a little goes a long way, grapefruit seed extract, which I had never heard of, and lastly, vinegar, which we all have in the cupboard. All these ingredients are reported to work effectively but the tea tree oil has a strong smell, not ideal, the grapefruit seed extract is expensive and I wouldn’t know where to find some, so vinegar being cheap was the obvious choice, especially as I like the smell of it, how weird is that? For those of you who’d like to try any of the methods I mentioned, here’s how. Alternatively, if you know a better way, please let me know. Tea tree oil wonder 2 teaspoons tea tree oil 2 cups Combinewaterina spray bottle, shake to blend, and spray on problem areas. Do not rinse. Makes about 2 cups, lasts indefinitely.

Grapefruit Seed Extract The advantage of using grapefruit seed extract instead of tea tree oil for killing mould is that it is odourless. 20 drops grapefruit seed extract 2 cups Combinewaterina spray bottle, shake to blend, and spray on problem areas. Do not rinse. Makes about 2 cups, lasts indefinitely.

Vinegar Spray Straight vinegar reportedly kills 82 percent of mould. Pour some white distilled vinegar straight into a spray bottle, spray on the mouldy area, and let set without rinsing if you can put up with the smell. It will dissipate in a few hours.

Unlock yourUK pension

Fiduciary Wealth Management offer sound pension advice!

UK pensions continue to suffer from complicated legislation, poor returns, and the issues surrounding the uncertainty of annuity purchase and the difficulties, on death, of passing on any remaining pension fund to future generations. For those leaving or planning to leave the UK there is an alternative option, namely a QROPS (Qualified Recognized Overseas Pension Scheme), which whilst not suitable for everyone, does offer eligible clients the opportunity to switch to a more flexible and tax efficient arrangement with a number of potential advantages.

Much has been written about the benefits of QROPS. For many, the principle attraction over UK pension schemes is that you never have to purchase an annuity. Furthermore, QROPS offer the ability to hold your pension fund in Euros thus avoiding currency exchange problems. Add to this the ability with careful planning to pass your pension intact, on death, to your spouse or next generation –compared to taxation and charges of up to 82% with UK schemes - and it is no wonder that QROPS have become so popular. But beware... Some QROPS providers continue to advertise the ability to take 100% of your pension as cash. Beware, as this is in breach of the rules and the UK Revenue has the ability to reverse the qualifying status of any scheme or jurisdictionas happened with all Singapore based QROPS. Pension funds can be frozen and taxation penalties applied. Not all types of UK pension, including UK State Scheme benefits, can be transferred to a QROPS. Also, great care should be taken before transferring some types of pension as you may lose valuable guarantees. There are many aspects to consider and you should seek professional advice. Fiduciary Wealth Management is able to offer the complete solution through The Rainbow Overseas Retirement Pension Plan, an HMRC approved QROPS combining tax and estate planning advantages with secure management of your pension Forfunds.those clients not able to take advantage of QROPS, Fiduciary Wealth Management are able to advise and make recommendations on existing UK pension arrangements. P ine Caterpillars (Latin name thaumetopoea pityocampa) are probably one of the most unpleasant creatures you will find in Spain and Portugal, certainly in areas where pine trees grow in abundance. They are found throughout the warmer regions of Southern Europe, the Near East and North Africa. As well as causing much damage to pine forests, they are a major danger to animals and, to a lesser degree, human beings. Do not touch them. Warn your children that they are not like the friendly English caterpillars. The very fine hairs on these creatures are poisonous and most dangerous. They can be seen living in silk cocoon style nests hanging in the pine trees to which they are most harmful, stripping them of their pine needles. When hungry, they leave their cocoon to seek another uninfested tree on which to feed. They travel nose to tail in a line, hence the name Processional. They are most noticeable from January to mid April and are at their most dangerous in February and March.

Treatment: If a person or animal shows signs of shock, get them to a doctor, hospital or vet immediately.

The caterpillars are often seen in the evenings, walking in procession from tree to tree. If they drop onto you or your pet, don’t brush them off with your hands because the effect is most unpleasant, causing great irritation, rash and pain. Dogs, cats and people can suffer from shock. The hairs of the caterpillars are still virulent even when the creatures are dead. Do not hit them with sticks because hairs flying in the air are just as dangerous. Burn them, but be careful of floating Ifhairs.you live near pine trees, it is recommended that you keep Anti Histamine tablets handy as an early treatment. In particular, avoid ingesting the hairs. Dogs are most at risk by sniffing the ground where the caterpillars have marched. Take particular care with your eyes. If affected, the result is serious, causing pain and swelling similar to a bad case of conjunctivitis.

Benamor Golf, 10th hole

D epending on the wind, this hole can vary between a driver and a 7 iron. What makes this such a good hole is that you have so many obstacles, ie out of bounds, just off the green left, out of bounds right side, a large lake 30 metres in front of the green, large tree overhanging right side of green and a menacing bunker on the front edge of the green. So how do you hit the target? Remember, be Goodmindful!players have the power to think while they are competing, most golfers are not thinking even when they believe they are, they are only worrying. Worrying is a misuse of your mind on the golf course, whatever your obstacle, worry will only make it more difficult, furthermore it is impossible to make a good golf swing if your muscles are too tense. Rather than worrying be mindful of the shot in hand and go ahead and play it as if you are going to hit the best shot of your life, you really might do it. Good luck, Keith. Keith Ashdown, P.G.A. Next up was a visit to the famous university city of Coimbra to take on fellow strugglers Académica. The magnificent stadium had been rebuilt for Euro 2004 and inaugurated in 2003 with a Rolling Stones concert that attracted 50,000. An enthralling match disappointingly attracted a crowd of only 3,152 considering that Académica had beaten Sporting 21 in Lisbon the previous weekend. Olhanense were forced to make several changes, Anselmo, Stephane and skipper Rui Duarte were absent through injury, whilst central defender Tengarrinha was suspended having amassed five yellow cards. Delson was drafted into midfield and Sandro slotted into the back four. In the 20th minute a quickly taken free-kick saw Ukra’s superb cross find the head of the unmarked Djalmir to give Olhanense a deserved lead. Ten minutes later and all the good work was undone when a sloppy challenge by Paulo Sérgio handed the home side a penalty. The resulting spot kick was duly despatched by Tiero despite a valiant effort by keeper Ventura. Final score 1-1 and a valuable point Thegained.much awaited match against Sporting was marked by a minute’s silence in memory of those who had lost their lives in the disaster in Madeira. This was a particularly poignant moment for those supporters who had enjoyed the wonderful hospitality of their Madeiran hosts when they visited the island to play Marítimo last Sporting,December.fresh from the visit to Liverpool where they lost 2-1 to Everton in the first leg of their Europa League tie, were hoping to return to winning ways. The atrocious weather conditions did not help but both sides endeavoured to play good football, and the home side should have been in the lead on 26 minutes but Djalmir blazed his shot wide. Sporting also had chances but failed to capitalise on their aerial advantage. The second half started with ‘man-of-the-match’ Sporting keeper Rui Patricio making a superb save from Castro. With conditions deteriorating everyone was happy to hear the final whistle none more so than Sporting. Final score 0-0.

Alberto contador wins Volta do Algarve

The first major cycle event of the year was plagued by some of the worst weather in the event’s history. Even so the crowds turned out to cheer home Spaniard Alberto Contador, overall winner of the five day 740 kms tour. The 4th stage, Cacela to Tavira, included forays into the hills, and covering a distance of 169 kms, was won by Belgian Sebastien Rosseler for the newly formed RadioShack team. Highest placed Portuguese rider was Tiago Machado who finished third, 32 seconds behind Contador.

The latest news from dedicated follower Chris Wright. Olhanense ended January in the bottom three of Portugal’s Premier Football League, but February was to prove to be a good month for the Algarveans. Last season’s fourth placed Nacional, who qualified for the UEFA Europa League, arrived in Olhão, hoping to cement their position in the top six. But it was the home side who were to take all three points, when substitute Toy headed home the only goal of the game in the 90th minute. A number of English clubs, including Newcastle United & QPR, were present to watch the industrious Castro and his fellow Portugal Under 21 team mate Ukra.

Richard Bassett Official review; The C-Word is an unflinchingly honest and darkly humorous account of Lisa’s battle with The Bullshit, as she came to call it. From the good days when she could almost pretend it wasn’t happening, to the bad days, when she couldn’t bear to wake up, Lisa’s story is emotional, heartbreaking and often hilarious. The C-Word will make you laugh and cry, and ultimately reaffirm your faith in life. ‘Carrie Bradshaw fell in Dior, I fell in Debenhams. It was May 2008, and it was spectacular. Uncomfortable heels + slippy floor + head turned by a cocktail dress = thwack. Arms stretched overhead, teeth cracking on floor tiles, chest and knees breaking the fall. It was theatrical, exaggerated, a perfect 6.0. And it was Significant Moment No.1 in discovering that I had grade-three breast cancer.’ The last thing Lisa Lynch had expected to put on her ‘things to do before you’re 30’ list was beating breast cancer, but them’s the breaks. So with her life on hold, and her mind close to capacity with unspoken fears, questions and emotions, she turned to her Mac and started blogging about the frustrating, life-altering, sheer pain-in-thearse inconvenience of getting breast cancer at the age of 28. About the Author Lisa Lynch is a journalist and magazine editor. At the age of 28, while editing her second interiors title, Lisa discovered a lump in her breast - a lump that spawned not just cancer, but a blog (www. alrighttit.com), this book and a writing career. Talk about milking it. Follow the blog at www.lisalynch.co.ukwww.alrighttit.com wide and eclectic range of new and used books English language, as well as a generous helping of used and collectable books in Portuguese and French. Also a wonderful selection of children’s books. Special orders and book finding service available. Gift certificates.

This month’s book review is something special; The C Word by Lisa Lynch. My last job in the UK was as an Art director on a homes’ magazine. My editor Lisa, was not only my boss, but someone I considered a true friend. Soon after I moved to Portugal, Lisa, in her own unique way, emailed all her friends with the devastating news that she had breast cancer. She started a blog online, which was a great way for friends to keep up to date with her progress, and also avoided Lisa having to answer the same questions and tell the same stories over and over. After praise from the likes of Stephen Fry, Lisa turned her blog into a book. Available from the 15th April, to order your copy speak to Elisabeth at A Lura dos Livros bookshop in Tavira, or pre order from www.amazon.co.uk.
