Brexit and pension transfers. A window of opportunity? Last year the UK began to impose a 25% tax on transfers to overseas pension schemes, including QROPS. This currently excludes individuals and QROPS where both are resident in a European Economic Area (including Gibraltar) country, but who knows what will happen after Brexit? If you wish to move your pension overseas, it may be better to do so now, under known rules, rather than wait and see what happens. Pension transfers can take months, so don’t risk leaving it too late.

SLOW FASHION_ Slow Fashion is a philosophy that encourages slowing down our consumption, owning fewer, but better, things that are purchased thoughtfully from brands that consciously manufacture clothing without threatening natural resources or damaging the social and ecological environment. At Kozii’s, we strongly believe that fashion, like food, is best when crafted “from scratch,” with intention — which means knitting a piece of our soul into everything we make. And because we’ve been honouring Slow Fashion since our very first steps, we are now proud to introduce our Spring-Summer Collection 2018 with a new line of organic fibers extracted from Banana Trees, Soya, Corn, Cotton, Milk and Lotus flower. Come, see and touch these amazing silky eco-friendly fibers at any of our shops in Tavira or in Milfontes 

GNR officers nab 2,799 speeding drivers in one week

ortugal’s national flag-carrier TAP Air Portugal is to become the first airline in the world to operate the new Airbus A330neo aircraft, which is due to come into service later this year. TAP world’s first airline to debut A330neo Airbus this week shared a photo of the new plane, accompanied by the caption: “Vejam, que bonito! – Look, what a beauty! @ tapairportugal’s first #A330neo has rolled out from our paint shop with a distinctive sticker celebrating our launch customer. The new A330neo comprises the new Airspace cabin and TAP made a point of involving national companies in its production to boost its image.

A total of 53 new, long and medium-haul aircraft were ordered back in 2015, among them 14 Airbus A330neo, although the total amount invested in the order was not released. Reports at the end of last year stated TAP would receive highly-efficient next generation planes during the latter half of 2018, and six would be in service by the end of the year. Fernando Pinto, former CEO of TAP, who stepped down from the role at the start of this year, had, at the time, described 2015’s fleet reinforcement as “the biggest leap forward in [the airline’s] recent history, or even in the history of the company.”

Health

Probiotics P robiotics are living microorganisms that help maintain the natural balance of organisms (microflora) in the intestines. The normal human digestive tube contains about 400 types of probiotic bacteria that reduce the growth of harmful bacteria and promote a healthy digestive system. The largest group of probiotic bacteria in the intestine are the lactic acid bacteria, Lactobacillus acidophilus which is likely the most widely used as a probiotic. It has been suggested that probiotics should be used to treat problems in the stomach and intestines. But it has only been shown that certain types of bacteria or fungi in the form of yeast (called strains) work in the digestive tract. It has not yet been proven which probiotics (alone or in combination) give results to treat diseases. At this time, even proven probiotic strains for a specific disease are not widely available. What are probiotics used for? There are scientific reports that prove the beneficial effects of probiotics, in several physical problems, including chronic inflammatory diseases, that is, a group of inflammatory diseases of long duration that cause damage to the tissues and organs, and may be of autoimmune origin or not, such as ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease, obesity, atherosclerosis and multiple sclerosis; in autoimmune diseases - diseases in which people have an immune reactivity to their own body components, generating inflammations, such as rheumatoid arthritis and multiple sclerosis; in degenerative diseases chronic diseases that lead to lesions

8

in the tissues and organs and loss of function, and may be inflammatory or not, such as Alzheimer's disease, arthrosis, glaucoma, etc.. Today, they are treated with immunosuppressants and other medications that are costly or have serious side effects; and also as a boost for the serotonina production in the intestines, which is related to our emotional and neurological balance. A decrease in beneficial bacteria can also cause other infections, such as vaginal candidiasis and urinary tract infections, and symptoms such as diarrhea caused by intestinal diseases. Many people also use probiotics to prevent diarrhea and constipation, gas and colic caused by antibiotics. Antibiotics kill "good" (beneficial) bacteria along with bacteria that cause disease. A decrease in beneficial bacteria can cause digestive problems. Taking probiotics can help replace the beneficial bacteria lost. It is also possible that probiotics are used to: help with other causes of diarrhea; help prevent infections in the digestive tract; help control the immune response (inflammation), such as that which occurs in inflammatory bowel disease. Probiotics are being studied to determine their benefits for colon cancer, skin infections, and irritable bowel syndrome. Most probiotics are the same as what already exists in a person's digestive system. Some probiotics have been used for a long time throughout history, such as those found in fermented foods and cultured dairy products, and as a supplement. As with any dietary supplement, keep in mind that probiotic

team of Algarve graffiti artists have brought new life into an old area of Olhão by turning the dilapidated walls of a former factory into works of art. Olhão council hired Loulébased art association Satori to turn the rundown walls on Largo da Fábrica Velha into murals depicting the history and traditions of Olhão. The artists, who worked hard for several weeks, were Pedro ‘Mistik’, ‘Gnose’ and ‘Kaset’ from Quarteira, as well as a special guest from Albufeira, ‘Dgiphi’. The town’s old canning and fishing industry and markets are all represented with an accuracy that has left citizens feeling proud. Inspiration came mostly from old photos, and the artists even say some locals have either

identified themselves or other family members in the paintings. Over 500 spray cans were used to bring the project to life on Rua da Fábrica Velha. Many towns in the Algarve have tapped into the potential of urban art when it comes to renovating old buildings. Similar projects include Portimão’s “sardine mural”, led by local art gallery Galeria XXI. It involved turning an old fish cannery into an impressive mural promoting the sardine as the town’s flagship symbol. Lagoa and Carvoeiro have also requested the services of urban artists to turn electricity boxes into urban art and “forgotten” walls into stunning murals.

French Bred La Baguette Artisan Boulanger Français, the latest chic addition to Tavira.

L

e Baguette is the stylish and modern French patisserie that has just opened in the enchanting and historical town of Tavira. The owners Céline and her husband Jean Luis are the entrepreneurs behind the idea and their passion and patience to succeed has brought the first French patisserie in Portugal that uses only the finest soft wheat flour used in French bread making. A short stroll from the center and along the Main Street of Rua de Liberdade will find you in the small square of Rua Dos Mouros and once there the alluring aroma from Le Baguette with welcome you together with the charisma of both Céline and Master Baker, Jean. Céline and Jean’s home town was Capbreton, in France just 25 kilometers from Biarritz and where Jean spent six years in the industry. They had originally planned to re-locate to Olhão to settle and start a business and after spending 4 years with the idea of a French patisserie, it was key that they were able to have the exact wheat flour imported from France which at that time, in 2014 was four times the price of locally available flour and not possible to be imported. They visited Tavira many times and decided it was the beauty and peace, as well as the possible opportunities that were ideal for their family and the decision was made to stay. By chance, since 2014 the perfect location had become available, and, incredibly the international and local client base had emerged. The absolute key is the authentic French ingredients and of course the location. Soft wheat flour is used in the bread making and unlike durum wheat, soft wheat flour contains less protein and absorbs less water than flour made with durum wheat.

A perfect spot to grab your freshly baked bread, or indulge in a pastry, pain au raisin or chocolat, brioche, almond croissant or apple or strawberry tart; new delicious pastries are baked throughout the day and change daily. The former Paladar restaurant had been closed for many years but after refurbishment and new state of the art equipment as well as their twist on the traditional décor, it is now a stylish, modern inviting place to also stop for a quality French fusion tea, coffee, or non alcoholic drink. The tea menu consists of the highest quality French teas, including a fine selection of black teas flavored with orange, almonds and peach with rose petals, or gunpowder green tea from China with sweet mint leaves, drunk very hot and very sweet, an amazing choice that can also be purchased to take home. Lots of local character mixes perfectly with the divine French influence and attracts regular clients who spend time chatting with friends and locals whilst watching the bread emerging from the four large ovens. Local restauranteurs pick up their produce and any bread can be baked to order in 20 minutes or pre ordered. Freshly filled baguettes, of ham, cheese, chorizo and tuna are also available as well as a chat with the charming and professional Céline. A very welcome addition to Tavira; we wish them much well earned success, it was a pleasure to meet them. Located in the center of Tavira, enjoy a relaxing massage or healing massage from Vorakorn or wife Chuttchanok

ou may be reading this magazine sat down having a coffee somewhere and the chances are, the way you are reading it will cause you strain and discomfort in your neck due to poor posture, or perhaps you already have a build up of tension in your shoulders from work or “slept in a funny position”. Well, we have the solution for you! Vorakorn Khanprakob and wife Chuttchanok are masseuses trained in Thailand with the sole goal of helping people, whether it be for pain relief or just to relax you and take away the stresses of daily life. Originally from Bangkok, Thailand, the couple previously had a typical busy, stressful life taking hours to travel to and from work, for Vorakorn that was in the banking sector and for Chuttchanok, insurance. Being Bhudists, they didn’t feel like the jobs they had were very fulfilling as they knew in their hearts that they just wanted to help people. If you didn’t know, massage parlours are everywhere in Thailand. Some amazing, some not so good, but either way the couple decided they were going to learn the art of

18

Traditional Thai massage and take their new found skills to another place to practice. However, they didn’t just learn traditional Thai massage! They also learned a range of different techniques and treatments such as Reflexology, Deep tissue massage, Oil massages and more. Vorakorn explained that as they are dealing with the body, it is very important to learn anatomy, so in total they spent 2 years learning the massage techniques and Anatomy from the Taralai massage school in Bangkok. After their training was done, they set out to find their new destination and in searching they found the Algarve. In 2014 they arrived and started doing Thai massages on the beaches of Albufeira, Quarteira and Monte Gordo. In 2015 they found Tavira and loved the pace of life, the history of the city and being close to the wonderful beach. They decided it was the perfect place to settle down and open their own practice. “Thai massage Experts” opened in 2017 and already have many loyal and satisfied customers. The couples dream of living in a peacful place with a great pace of life and helping people has finally become reality.

HERBAL BALL

The healing practice of Thai herbal compress therapy dates back nearly 5,000 years, to an era when the knowledge of plants, including their effects through ingestion or application on the body, were painstakingly researched and then passed down from one generation to the next. This herbal therapy was designed to relieve pain and inflammation. A selection of therapeutic herbs, including prai, ginger, turmeric and lemongrass, are wrapped in a muslin compress, steamed and then applied to the body in gentle pressing, circular and rolling movements. In Thailand, the herbal compress is called luk pra kob, translated as “herbal pressing sphere. To make the compress, a combination of healing herbs is bundled together in accordance with ancient recipes.

DEEP TISSUE MASSAGE

Deep tissue massage uses many of the same movements and techniques as Swedish massage, but the pressure will generally be more intense. It is also a more focused type of massage, as the therapist works to release chronic muscle tension or “knots". The focus is on the deepest layers of muscle tissue, tendons and fascia (the protective layer surrounding muscles, bones and joints). A study in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine found that people's blood pressure fell after a single 45 to 60 minute deep tissue massage.

REFLEXOLOGY

Reflexology is the application of appropriate pressure to specific points and areas on the feet, hands, or ears. Reflexologists believe that these reflex points correspond to different body organs and systems, and that pressing them creates real benefits for the person's health. For example, reflexology holds that a specific spot in the arch of the foot corresponds to the bladder. When a reflexologist uses thumbs or fingers to apply appropriate pressure to this area, it may affect bladder functioning. Millions of people around the world use it to complement other treatments when addressing conditions like anxiety, asthma, cancer treatment, cardiovascular issues, diabetes, headaches, kidney function, PMS, and sinusitis.

TRADITIONAL THAI MASSAGE

Traditional Thai massage is an ancient healing system that combines broad and targeted acupressure, stimulation and manipulation of energy lines called sen, and assisted yoga postures. Treatment effects are enhanced when the patient is fully relaxed and breathing deeply. This traditional healing practice, called nuad or nuad boran in the Thai language, stands in sharp contrast to western massage therapies. Traditional Thai massage rarely uses oils or lotions, and the recipient remains clothed during a treatment. There is constant body contact between the practitioner and client, but rather than rubbing on muscles, the body is compressed, pulled, stretched and rocked in order to clear energy blockages and relieve tension. The practitioner uses thumbs, palms, forearms, elbows, knees and feet to create a dance of movement on the body of the recipient. In this process, joints are opened, muscles and tendons are stretched, internal organs are toned, and energy is balanced. The overall effect is one of deep relaxation, rejuvenation, and physical and mental well being.

W

ith the Dow Jones Industrial Average suffering its biggest one day points loss in its 122-year history on Monday 5th February 2018 and stocks in Asia and Europe also taking huge hits in February – the volatility of the world stock market is exposed once again. With bank interest rates still offering pitifully low returns, investors are continually looking at property as the favoured method for investments. The question of course is where should one invest? As reported in the "Illustrative Insights" newsletter, the credit rating agency DBRS states that "most European real estate markets have trended positively, posting a strong recovery following the dramatic collapse of the last ten years”. In its report its points to notable improvements in Ireland (12 %), Portugal (10 %), the Netherlands (10%) and Spain (7%) with Italy being the only European country where the property sector continues to decline (- 1 %). In the United Kingdom, the DBRS highlights the challenges that are beginning to present themselves to the real estate industry due to Brexit and at a time when London is also showing the first signs of a slowdown. With the capital usually leading the property market trends within the country, things are not looking good for the rest of the UK. As has been reported in the Association of Estate Agents in Portugal (APEMIP), the Portuguese property market is continuing to improve with 2017

demonstrating that average property prices had climbed yet again. With an average of 400 properties per day being sold nationally, buyers are reacting in much greater numbers as confidence continues to grow. In 2017, the municipal tax on property purchases (IMT) earned the municipalities 851.2 million euros nationwide with this figure already surpassing the previous record of 839 million euros, collected in 2007. WE designer outlet Algarve Go to Designer Outlet at the Mar Shopping Centre in Loulé, and there is no question about it, you will leave laden with bags full of wonderful bargains. Susi Rogol Goodkind sets out to spend.

N

ot all the shops have opened their doors yet at the long-awaited Designer Outlet complex and that’s possibly a good thing – especially to those who cannot resist a special find and the opportunity to save as much as 70 per cent on an item they would happily have paid full price for had they seen it elsewhere. Fancy a fancy bag? Spanish high-fashion house Bimba Y Lola has divine dress-up clutches at €92, reduced from €295 and a great selection of cute little zip-up wallets for around €20. Their separates collection is young, fresh and adventurous and there’s plenty to choose from at what seems like crazy prices. More fab bags are part of the offering at Purificacion Garcia, (Puri to its legion of fans) another Spanish label and one that is known for delivering a twist on the classics. Reckon on saving a highly-attractive 50% – minimum! In the store right now are cropped Chanel-style jackets in soft checkered tweed, tunic tops in brilliant colours and striking prints, and perfectly-cut palazzo pants that are great for on-the-terrace entertaining. Amanda Holden (not that Amanda Holden), of Vale d’Eguas, went to look and came out beaming – and with more than a

30

few bags: “I love to shop at Purificacion Garcia. I bought a fabulous fringed long waistcoat that goes over dresses and jeans. And a fab stripy shirt for Mr H. They were under half price!” Narrow jackets, sweaters cut close to the body, and great-looking slim-line shirts what this iconic house has ready and waiting for the fashion-forward fella. There’s nowhere to stop for a coffee or glass of vinho or a snack in the Designer Outlets which leaves more time to cruise the shops. (Though there are plenty of eateries in Mar itself, including the four chefs designer foodie section that is certainly worth a lunchtime trip – divine home made pasta in particular). Pick up a bright-coloured wheelie at Samonsite – or black if you don’t want to get noticed – there’s 20%-40% savings across every range. Now you can shop more, and have less to carry! The choice is huge Of course, no shopping centre, bargain priced or otherwise, could do without the big names in sportswear, and here they are huge (the floor space as well as the labels!). A vast Adidas is packed with rails of the latest kit, while Pepe Jeans, Puma and Ericeira Surf and Skate compete for attention from those

in search of the fashion-led must-have trainers and track suits. The high street chains are here, too, like Calzedonia and Intimissimi, Springfield and Desigual all set to capture a slice of your fashion spend. In all, there are more than 50 outlet stores – all leading brands with their own sense of style and brand personality. Decenio men’s section has sweaters in more than a dozen colours and every conceivable variation on the classic shirt (okay, so that shop alone had me waving my credit card for a purchase designed to placate the other half when he saw my mounting number of receipts!). My friend Jennifer bought her bloke not one but two sweaters, and got taken out for a very smart dinner as the result. (Bloke did not realise she’d paid less for each than the price of a main course in the restaurant of his choice.) And then there is Timberland. And Lion of Porches. And Rockport, where Jonathan Gee bought virtually the same shoes as the pair he had bought full price in Algarve Shopping just a few months earlier. But it is not just fashion that is pulling in an appreciate audience.

32

There is much for the home. And Home is the very appropriate name for a store lined with gleaming frying pans of every shape and size and finish, shiny cutlery and kitchen gadgets, wonderful electrical things, and Rowenta (a key brand in the shop) with its own, well-priced answer to Mr Dyson’s stick vacuum. Prato do dia The big Vista Alegre outlet is where to stock up not only on essentials like frosted glass platters and china of every description, but also on over-sized pots and pans (back to Samsonite for another wheelie); oversize really means what it says on the label here, so just think of all that room inside for those irresistible little gift items (buy now and keep for Christmas gift-giving?) that will not make a dent on your shopping budget. Need sunglasses? A new watch? How about a fine cotton duvet cover, and a pair of cosy warm pyjamas? It’s all here. At crazy prices. And not just for the occasional Black Friday or Miserable Monday clear-it-out sale, but every day, all year round. Open till late.

The Designer Outlet Algarve is the first in Europe to be integrated with a store (IKEA), a shopping mall and an outdoor leisure area. A joint venture between IKEA and Mutschler Outlet Holding, it is under the managementof Vienna-based ROS Retail Outlet Shopping, whose founders, Thomas Reichenauer and Gerhard Graf, boast a portfolio that includes designer outlets across eastern Europe and new developments in Germany, France, Poland, Italy, Spain and Croatia.

After only 2 months into becoming a charity the association 'Animals Lost Paradise Found' were invited to help with a rescue of some cats and dogs at an illegal kennel in the East Algarve

I

t was only on arriving did the size of the operation become relevant. The conditions of the kennels were appalling. Excrement and rotten food everywhere and water containers either empty or with green water in. In total 32 cats were rescued and taken to the shelter at Animals Lost Paradise Found along with 2 horses and the 16 dogs that were rescued and relocated to better conditions. The efforts of these people and dedication to animal welfare are outstanding, but they still need help with the tasks ahead with regards to sterilisation and treatments, not forgetting food. These associations are run entirely on the support of generous donations, so if you want to help with either supplying food or donating, you can find out ways to help by visiting the website www. associationanimalslostparadisefound.com The goal of this association is to find new homes for as many cats and dogs as possible, so, again if you are interested in adopting an animal or even if you just want to sponsor, then you can contact them through the website. Remember every little helps.

Grow your own Citrus trees O

Every garden no matter what the size should have at least one citrus tree

ranges, lemons, limes, grapefruit, tangerines and kumquats can be grown in almost any frost-free environment. Though these trees are often grown for their ornamental value, many varieties can be grown for their delicious fruit. These trees are ideal for growing in sheltered containers in cooler climates and it is very possible in our warmer climate for these trees to present flowers and fruit any time of the year due to a four to six week growth cycles. GROWING FROM SEED Choose what kind of citrus fruit you would like to grow. This may be a simple choice if you have a favorite but you may want to consider planting a variety of citrus to see what grows best in your climate. Tangerines, mandarins and satsumas are more cold-tolerant than sweet oranges and are also more tolerant of drought. Kumquats make good container plants but any citrus can be grown virtually anywhere. Seeds can be ordered or you can use them from fruit already fallen or purchased for food. Start the seedlings by planting them in small or medium growing pots that are well drained in the bottoms. Fill the pots with rich soil that has a good amount of humus content and also add a handful of clean sand to each pot. Water the loosely packed soil before planting your seeds. Plant your seeds at least 1-inch below the surface of the soil. You can plant up to five or six seeds per 10-inch pot if you like. These will need to be transplanted into singular pots later. Make sure that the temperature is not below 40 degrees for the seedlings. Place them in a sunny part of a garden or on a sunny window sill if it is still cold outside. Citruses prefer a temperature of at least 50 degrees or higher. Keep the soil moist while seeds are germinating with a water-filled spray bottle. They should sprout within 3 to 4 weeks. Let them grow for at least 6 months before transplanting them into the ground or into bigger pots if you wish to keep them indoors. Water them but do not let the roots sit in standing water. Orange trees can grow from 8 to 25 feet in height depending on the variety and growing conditions. Once trees are established, they grow best in the ground or in large tubs. Prune mature trees as lightly as possible. Citrus do not need heavy pruning. Most of the time they are

34

pruned for shape and looks more than anything. BUYING YOUR CITRUS TREE Citrus trees are the misunderstood trees of landscaping. Citrus trees aren't really trees, they're shrubs. Reaching a height of 25 feet, they may be the ideal plants for your yard. But there are tricks to purchasing a good citrus tree. Buy field-grown citrus trees whenever possible, identifiable by its burlap-wrapped rootball. Such trees are more costly, but healthier. Consider container citrus trees that are not overgrown. This puts the health of the plant into question. Purchase small citrus trees that take to the ground faster. A big tree takes as long as a small tree to produce fruit. Look for consistently dark-colored leaves. The uniform color is an indication of a healthy, diseasefree plant. Ensure that the graft union is approximately 2 inches above the ground. Many citrus trees are grafted. A graft union is a dog-legged bend in the trunk. If the bend is too close to or below the soil it can rot or grow fungus. Investigate the trunk for mars. Marring leaves a citrus tree trunk damaged and might indicate a weak or injured tree. You want to buy the healthiest citrus tree possible. Assess the variety of citrus trees available before you buy. Citrus trees are available in many varieties of orange, mandarin, tangerine, tangelo, kumquat, lemon, lime, grapefruit and other exotics. You can find dwarf citrus trees to buy that are great for container gardening as well. Find out if the variety desired is available in your area. Some plants are restricted to control disease. HERE'S HOW TO PLANT A CITRUS TREE SO YOU CAN GROW YOUR OWN FRESH FRUIT. Select a sunny spot with well-drained soil. Dig a hole slightly less deep (about an inch) than the depth of the root ball and twice as wide. Make the bottom flat and the sides rough, not smooth. Remove the tree from the container by setting it on its side and gently pulling on the lower trunk. If the root ball doesn't slide out easily, cut the pot off with shears. Set the tree in the bottom of the hole, making sure the top of the root ball sits slightly above the surrounding soil level.

www.eastalgarvemag.com

Gardens

www.eastalgarvemag.com

35

Gardens

Fill in around the root ball with the original soil, tamping gently as you fill in. If your soil is mostly sand or clay, amend it by blending in organic matter such as compost (add about a third by volume) before filling the hole. Build a 4- to 6-inch-high soil berm around the tree. This is your watering basin, and it should be just a bit wider than the hole. Fill the basin with water and let it drain. Repeat the process at least twice. CITRUS TREE PROBLEMS Citrus trees planted in the home landscape need observation to detect sucker growth and diseases. Sweetflavored citrus is grafted to a hardy sour-orange rootstock, which produces stems known as suckers. Suckers originate from below the graft of the tree and grow tall, straight and may have thorns. Suckers are best pruned when they are small in diameter to lessen disease and shock to the tree when removed. Cut sucker branches close to the main trunk. Citrus trees have an attractive shape, fragrant blossoms and delicious edible fruit. With the proper care, a citrus tree can be a sweet and/or sour addition to many lawns. Citrus trees like abundant sunlight. When too little sunlight is provided, a citrus

36

tree will not fully develop, bloom or produce fruit. Citrus trees do not tolerate cold. Even a moderate freeze may kill a citrus tree. Citrus trees require deep soil with

good drainage both on the surface and underground. If they do not have adequate drainage, the standing water can damage the trees. Also, citrus trees will not survive in salty soil. Citrus canker is a very contagious citrus bacteria that can cause leaf loss, damaged fruit, fruit drop and dieback. It is spread through the air or by insects, birds or humans. Yellow halo lesions or scabs will appear on the leaves, fruit, bark and trunk. Melanose is a fungal infection that does not affect the fruit of a citrus tree, but it does make the fruit rind scabbedlike and unsightly. It does not affect grapefruit trees. Citrus trees can be damaged by insects, including aphids, citrus whitefly, orange dog caterpillars, citrus thrips, citrus bud mites, citrus red mites and snails. Many infestations can be avoided, however, by treating trees with the appropriate sprays and proper sanitation program. Don’t let any of these problems put you off planting and growing citrus tree in your garden, because the benefits of having fresh fruit to hand which taste so much better than fruit you often buy and you will always have that slice of lemon for your gin and tonic.

Energy sufficient in multiple ways

O

ne of the world's most famous museums is the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg Russia, admired by millions of visitors each year, it needs lots of attention to keep the museum, its beautiful paintings and its structure, up to date. Although from the outside it looks perfect, for more than 200 years the museum suffered from a severe rising damp problem, resulting in the need for replastering and repainting most of the walls each year, which doesn’t solve the problem. Also, because of all that humidity in the museum, the old paintings needed a lot of attention and treatment throughout the year to avoid the devastating effect humidity has on them. Around 18 years ago a German electrical engineer and 3 professors finished a 10 year long study and experimental phase, resulting in the development of a unit which is built specificly to eliminate rising damp in old and even new buildings. The unit gives magnetic pulses which change the polarity of the water molecules in the walls and floors, so that together with the negative loaded earth, the water molecules are pushed down slowly until they sit underneath the foundation of the houses. Between 1 and 2,5 years this is achieved and while the unit keeps on giving the magnetic pulses

www.eastalgarvemag.com

Eliminate rising damp in old and even new buildings to help save money and stay healthier

the water molecules stay underneath the foundation and never come up again. So after a very satisfied test installation in the Hermitage (see picture) 191 units are installed now, humidity is gone, no more dehumidifiers needed, no more yearly repairs on paint and plaster and all paintings now stay in a good shape because humidity (which is gone now) does not effect them anymore. A side effect of the installed unit (the size is only 20cm x 20cm and for houses up to 250m2 and usualy 1 unit is sufficient) is that it not only eliminates the existing rising damp but it also will prevent rising damp occurring in the future, this is why especially in the Algarve, where many old and new houses suffer from rising damp, we are being asked more and more to install the system in houses just being built to avoid humidity problems in the future. How the unit becomes a money saver • When the floors and the walls are dry, heating your house will be 25% to 65% less on your heating costs (dry walls and floors need much less energy to heat up). • Many people try to tackle the rising damp by using dehumidifiers. They are in fact counter productive as they extract humidity from the air as well as from the walls and the floors causing both to get a bit dryer but only for them to suck up more humidity from the wet earth underneath the house, a vicious

circle. Dehumidifiers are big energy consumers and only increase the rising damp problem. With the unit fabricated in Germany, installed dehumidifiers become totally unnecessary. • Instead of sometimes yearly repairs on the plaster and paint, after the house is dry, it is only needed once and then the house will stay dry for at least the next 35 years, so a new layer of paint every 15 years will be sufficient. Other benefits The unit itself does not need any maintenace and represents a €10 yearly energy cost. There is a 20 year guarantee on the unit, however, proved by tests we know it will work at least 35 years (after this test in a time accelerating machine the unit still worked 100 percent). Also we have a moneyback guarantee if 3 years after installation humidity levels on the groundfloor exceeds the 3 percent level or the basement exceeds the 6,5 percent level. Many references are available from people who installed the system years ago, free control measurements are taken on a regular basis and people who want to find out more about the system can contact us for a free humidity survey. Last but not least, living in a house without all that humidity is much better for our health and will avoid humidity related illnesses in the future.

IRS Tax Return 2018: frequently asked questions

T

he IRS delivery time will begin on the 1st of April and will run until the end of May. So now it’s that time of the year, when we need to clarify some of the questions you may have concerning this important task. In which form can I submit my IRS tax return in Portugal? From 2018, all IRS tax returns are exclusively submitted on-line, so if you don’t have yet a password to access the tax portal, it’s important to request one per each tax payer. As the tax website is only in Portuguese this may be a difficult task if you don’t understand the language, ask your accountant to get this for you. When do I need to submit my IRS tax return in Portugal? All IRS tax returns, independent of the type of income earned, need to be submitted from the 1st of April until the 31st of May. What is the period covered in my Portuguese IRS tax return? The tax year in Portugal is the same as the civil year, so you declare the income from 1st of January 2017, until 31st of December 2017. Who needs to fill an IRS tax return in Portugal? All the tax residents and or the nonresidents that earned income from Portuguese source need to submit the IRS tax return. The exceptions are for

residents that have earned only salaries or pensions, from Portuguese source, lower than 8.500€ per year, and when there wasn’t any tax deducted on source, and or in case they received alimony income up to 4.104€. Do I fill a joint return with my partner or a single one each? You may choose to do it either way, so it’s important to ask your accountant to simulate the two scenarios and see what is more advantageous to you. What happens if I forget to file a return or do it incorrectly? It’s important to be aware that the fines for non-compliance with the dates, can be very high. Fines can go from 37.50€ to 112,50€ for a delay of 30 days. However depending on the type of missconduct, mainly fraud, fines go from 375€ to 22.500€. I’m non-resident, do I need to submit a return? First of all, are you sure that you are non-resident? Do you have a fiscal representative? If not, where do you receive your IMI council tax bills? If you receive them at your property in Portugal, then most likely you are resident for tax purposes in Portugal. If you are nonresident, then you will only submit a IRS return in Portugal, if you have income from Portuguese source (this includes property rental or property sale even if you haven’t made a capital gain). I arrived in Portugal last year, do I

need to submit a return? In the first year of residency, you need to submit a tax return for the period you were in Portugal (from … to 31-12-2017). The same happens to all those that stopped being Portuguese residents in 2017, they need to submit a tax return from 01-01-2017 until the date they left. What happens if I have to submit tax returns in more than one country and the information is not ready before the end of May? If for any reason you don’t have all the information required to submit the tax return in Portugal by the end of May, you may submit a request in the tax portal, to allow you to submit the tax return until the end of December of the current year. When do I need to pay my IRS? After submitting your tax return the tax authorities will validate your declaration and you will receive a tax bill in the post, giving you 30 days to pay. Please note that if you intend to be away during the warmer months and don’t have a fiscal representative to receive your bills, you will incur in monthly interest charges and penalties, if paying out of date. Some suggestions to make your IRS this year a stress-free task We strongly advise our customers to prepare everything ahead of time, in order to complete this process smoothly: PASSWORD: Make sure you and your partner have a password to access the Tax Portal.
